The New Celebration Gold Mine is located 32 km south of the regional mining centre of Kalgoorlie. The current mill throughput is 1.7 million tonnes per annum with a gold production of around 120,000 ounces per year. The main source of ore for the mill comes from the Hampton Boulder and Pernatty pits. Over the last two years the oxide reserves from these pits have been depleted and the harder primary sulphide ores are now being processed. This change has led to a decrease in cyanide extractable gold.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, for instance the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well-established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Centre, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter susceptible of application in this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer, is be-lieved to be novel*.

Introduction Despite perennial economic turbulence, Argentina continues to push ahead with efforts to develop its fledgling hardrock mining industry. The country lacks the infrastructure and mining history of neighboring Chile, but contains vast areas of great resource potential. The eastern slope of the Andean Cordillera in west-northwest Argentina is a relatively little-explored region offering geology highly conducive to the occurrence of base and precious metals deposits. Past exploration has concentrated on locating and evaluating porphyry copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) type occurrences. Comparatively little attention has been given to precious metals potential. An interesting and important group of base and precious metals prospects in northwestern Argentina occurs within and adjacent to the Upper Miocene Farallon Negro volcanic complex in Catamarca province. The volcanic complex contains numerous base and precious metals vein occurrences, high gold porphyry copper prospects, and possible disseminated gold targets that have attracted relatively minor attention in the past. Various geologic aspects of the region have been reported by several workers (Llambias, 1970, 1972; Caelles et al, 1971; and Sillitoe, 1973). Regional geology The Farallon Negro volcanic complex is located within the Sierras Pampeanas morphostructural province about 200 km (125 miles) east of the main Andean Cordillera (Fig. 1). The Sierras Pampeanas is characterized by north-south-trending basin and range topography that developed during the Miocene and Pliocene. Uplifted blocks are composed mainly of lower Paleozoic metasediments and granitoid plutonic rocks unconformably overlain by Tertiary redbeds and minor carbonates. A consistent landward migration of volcanic and intrusive ac¬tivity occurred in this region of the Andes from the early Mesozoic through the mid-Tertiary. There are multiple stages in a mining operation that a mining engineer has to draw polygons to be used as operation guidelines. These polygons are drawn by hand and based on engineer?s experience. However, having automatic procedures for forming the shapes can increase the quality and decrease the efforts required. These shapes need to be homogenous in grades and rock types so that the quality and dilution of material sent to the plant can be estimated with the good approximation. In this paper, a clustering algorithm with shape control is introduced which can provide reasonable guidelines for all the aforementioned shapes by manipulating its parameters. At the end, implementations of the algorithm on a small part of a gold deposit with different mining strategies is presented and evaluated based on homogeneity of grade, rock types and determined destinations as well as the shape.

Dressed in black tie and Victorian attire, some 200 people came to Leadville, CO, for a September weekend featuring a National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) induction banquet and a scenic mountain train trip to Fremont Pass and the Climax Mine. The 18th annual induction banquet on Sept. 17 began with cocktails and a open house. It was a chance for visitors to tour the National Mining Museum including the new Hennebach Wing, opened in February. The new wing is named in honor of Ralph Hennebach, retired chairman of Asarco. Formerly Leadville Junior High School, the Hennebach Wing encompasses more than1,440 m2 (15,500 sq ft) of floor space in two stories. One prominent feature is a 1923 Wills Sainte Claire touring sedan. Climax Molybdenum donated this first all-molybdenum steel motorcar. Docents were available throughout the museum to give banquet attendees directions and answer questions.

Investigations have been carried out to evolve a grinding aid useful in grinding a 40% iron-bearing magnetite containing quartz as the major gangue, based on studies conducted with pure magnetite, pure quartz and its synthetic mixture. These investigations established that an addition of 200 g of CaO per metric ton of ore was the most effective in grinding quartz preferentially over magnetite at 75% solids concentration by weight. The limited rheological studies conducted suggest that the effect could either be due to dispersion or the structural modification of quartz. More importantly, a new concept, that of Critical Solids Concentration, where two different minerals behave like one with respect to response to communication in a tumbling mill, has been introduced for the, first time. Above this concentration, one of the minerals is ground at a faster rate than the other, whereas the reverse is the case below this concentration.

Roller presses were first invented in the middle of the 19th century, for the economical size enlargement of coal fines as fuels. Coal briquettes became quickly accepted for industrial and domestic use giving rise to a large and sucessful industry, particularly in Europe, Japan, and North America. When, towards the middle of the 20th century, coal was more and more replaced by other energy sources, such as electricity, gas, and oil, roller press manufacturers searched for alternate applications of this equipment. In addition to contemporary coal briquetting, in fields such as smokeless fuel and form-coke, it was found that redesigned and modernized roller presses, which are now capable of exerting high forces, are versatile machines for many tasks in mineral processing. Today they are used for: - the "classic" pressure agglomeration and - the "new" high pressure comminution. In pressure agglomeration, the characteristics of fine minerals are improved by forming briquettes or granulated products from compacts. During size enlargement with roller presses briquettes are directly obtained while granular materials are produced by crushing and sizing of compacted sheets. The processes are carried-out essentially dry and often do not require binders other than those inherently contained in the feed and "activated" by the high forces and/or elevated feed temperatures (e.g. hot briquetting). Therefore, no foreign materials (impurities) are added. Another advantage of the technology is, that wide particle size distributions are acceptable or desirable as feed materials, including millimeter or even centimeter sized particles. Plastic particles deform and brittle materials are crushed during pressure agglomeration. A relatively new application of roller presses in mineral processing is the utilization of the crushing effect when brittle materials pass the nip area between the rollers. It was found that this crushing mechanism is very efficient thus saving energy, particularly in grinding circuits handling large capacities. The paper introduces the fundamentals of the process and describes the design as well as applications of modern roller presses in mineral processing.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (KO88) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron- and steelmaking and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

Respect for the people is one of the main values of S&B. Such respect needs to be manifested by actions ensuring the bodily and spiritual integrity of personnel in pursuing their work. The ultimate target is to achieve zero accidents by developing the culture and infrastructure required to support it. Within this framework, the following proactive safety practices were introduced in 2004 and are implemented at S&B Greek sites: (a.) Management Safety Visits (MSVs) of shop floor operations to address safety attributes of work guidelines, (b.) Monitoring compliance with critical work guidelines, using a ?safety barometer? tool. The proactive nature of both above systems, facilitates communication with employees on safety behaviors and their adoption in our facilities at Milos and Fokis, has been successful. Above all, these practices corroborate the management?s concern for the people and its commitment to continuously improve the working environment.

The iron ore slimes (d80 ~ 50 µm) generated at Noamundi iron ore washing plant (TISCO), assaying 57% Fe, 4% Si02 and 8.3% A1203, have been subjected to hydrocyclone studies. The effects of different design and operating parameters have been studied to get a product suitable for subsequent use in the sinter mix. The studies indicate that it is possible to obtain a product containing 64% Fe, 1.4% Si02 and 3.5% A1203 with a recovery of 49% iron. The process involves classification followed by separation in a hydrocyclone. By this method, the overall yield of iron ore production in the plant is expected to increase by 8%. Microscopic examinations and X-ray diffraction studies were conducted to elucidate the mineralogy and liberation characteristics of Noamundi iron ore slimes. The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined-out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a longwall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room-and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases, employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

A 14.6 cm (5.75 in.) diameter by 1.83 m (6 ft) tall laboratory-size column is used in flotation of Florida phosphates of different feed sizes. In this paper, the effects of different parameters on the flotation efficiency of coarse particles (belt feed, -1.4 + 0.5 mm, i.e., 14 x 35 mesh) under negative bias are discussed. Parameters included collector dosage, frother type and dosage, and conditioning water, which contained a residual concentration of collector. Flotation tests were performed using statistical designs. The results strongly suggest that flotation performance is dependent on the used combination of reagents. Interactions between frothers and the collector and, consequently, the flotation efficiency were found to be dependent on frother type and presence or absence of conditioning water. Under the negative bias, an excellent recovery of more than 98% of phosphate was achieved in concentrates of high grade (above 31% P205) from such feed of coarse particles.

Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces. This paper describes a dynamic short-nun mineral supply model that incorporates secondary processing, transportation, mineral market structure, and direct mining and milling costs. The method employed is network flow programming. Empirical tests utilizing domestic phosphate industry data have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior. In the model, nodes represent physical locations such as a mine or port. Arcs represent either a process, such as mining, or movement, such as rail or barge transport. Each arc is described by lower or minims allowable flow bounds, upper or maximum possible flow bands, and variable cost. Mines and previous period inventories represent potential supply. The model is optimized via a cost minimizing algorithm, which attempts to fulfill stated total demand at the minimum possible system cost given the arc constraints. An optimal solution of the model will predict production patterns by mineral property for each prespecified level of demand. A mineral property is defined as a separate accounting entity such as a mine. The results of serial optimizations are used to construct the short-run supply curve. Dynamic policy analysis can be conducted by altering the arc constraints.

Independent natural resource Valuers are an essential link between miners and mineral explorers on the one hand and the finance industry on the other. Investors (and regulators) expect the mining and financial industries to be vigilant against the use of inappropriate methodology or use of illogical steps within the chosen valuation method. The Australian Corporations Law generally requires an Independent Expert Report to support mergers and takeovers (as well as for capital raising activities). The introduction of the VALMIN Code (1998) by The Australasian Institute of Mining as Metallurgy, has meant that such Reports, when prepared in compliance with it, are now much more comprehensible and reliable than before. This is because the key requirements of the Code are for transparency and materiality in the Technical Assessment and Valuation Reports prepared in connection with the transaction involved. Transparency is particularly important because it allows the reader to identify and understand the assumptions made to derive a value and to then form a view as to the reasonableness of the result. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Where the reasoning is patently illogical or the inputs are chosen to achieve a particular result, the estimated value must be viewed as virtually worthless. Experience, qualifications, competence and repute are the hallmarks of a professional technical auditor and valuer.

Arizona copper mines produced nearly 67% of the nation?s copper in 2000, according to a report released by the Arizona Mining Association (AMA). This was a slightly larger share than in 2000 despite large reductions by one major copper producer and production cutbacks at several other facilities. In 1999, Arizona mines produced 64% of the nation?s copper. The report was prepared by economist George F. Leaming of the Western Economic Analysis Center in Marana, AZ. It also showed the copper industry had a $4.6-billion impact on the Arizona economy in 2000, a 26%decline from 1999. This is the lowest financial impact since 1973 and less than half the record reached in 1981of $9.6 billion. The decline is primarily due to a sustained low copper price and a slow-down in the US economy. The mining industry?s impact included combined direct and indirect contributions of $1.283 billion in personal income for Arizona residents, the equivalent of 43,000jobs. More than 5,000 of those jobs were in state and local government and more than 18,000 were in trade and ser-vice businesses. The copper industry directly employed fewer than 8,000 people statewide in 2000. This was down about 23% from 1999.

The purpose of this paper is to describe a data-acquisition system for mine ventilation surveys that was developed by the author. The system is composed of "off-the- shelf" components integrated through a custom- designed software package to form a user- friendly data acquisition system capable of operating as an unmanned base station or as an operator-triggered roving station. To demonstrate the applicability of the developed system, the author will present data collected during an experimental ventilation survey, which was performed in one of the underground coal mines of eastern Kentucky.

Surface force measurements based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) are used to describe the wettability of surfaces, specifically kaolinite basal plane surfaces at a high resolution. The kaolinite particles (~500 nm) were ordered with either the silica tetrahedral face exposed or the alumina octahedral face exposed, and surface force measurements were made between a hydrophobic diamond-like-carbon (DLC) tip and the kaolinite faces at pH 4, which is around the isoelectric point of the DLC tip. Under these conditions, the effect of electrostatic interaction should be eliminated and only van der Waals interactions and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions are expected to contribute to the surface force. The wettabilities of the surfaces were determined from the magnitude of the surface force. Wettabilities of the kaolinite basal planes thus determined were compared with the corresponding wettabilities of talc and mica surfaces, which are well-known to be naturally hydrophobic, and hydrophilic surfaces, respectively. The results reveal that the silica tetrahedral face of kaolinte has a modest level of hydrophobicity, which may be due to the lack of hydrogen bonding sites. In contrast, the alumina octahedral face showed no hydrophobicity, since a layer of surface hydroxyl groups is present at the alumina face, resulting in a relatively strong interaction between this surface and water molecules. It is expected that, with a better understanding of the surface properties of kaolinite, further improvements in flotation separations and dewatering may be achieved.

PROLOGUE Nowadays, where production costs and energy costs are increasing and at the same time requirements in fineness and purity of industrial mineral products are getting higher and higher, industry has to look for more efficient grinding systems and developments to produce these products more economically. Therefore lots of new developments in high energy jet mill pulverizing have been made. In the main, however, these developments involved more or less just the new principle of fluidized bed jet pulverizers but not the older spiral jet mill principle. In some cases, especially in the filler industry where laminar minerals are used and higher aspect ratios are required, the spiral jet mill principle has advantages in a better delamination of these minerals. To comminute minerals down to products with a d97 < 3 µm, the specific energy consumption increases up to 2,000 kWh/t – 3,000 kWh/t or even more, depending on the grindability of the mineral. So the production of these fine materials is quite an expensive task. But jet mill grinding is and will be the most favorable method to produce micro-products and in the near future nano-products, despite the high energy consumption.

This chapter describes the nature and occurrence of the principal clay minerals that are used as ceramic raw materials, explains how these raw materials are used to produce finished goods, and summarizes positive and negative trends that will affect future demand for raw materials and products in the ceramic industry. The term ceramics was derived from the ancient Greek keramikos (a clay jar). A ceramic product is a material that has been fired to at least 468.3°C (Mitchell, 1983). In addition to being one of our earliest manufacturing and construction materials, ceramic products are among the earliest records of civilization. The enduring significance of ceramics is shown by the fact that, even today, the manufacture of whitewares, brick and related red-fired wares, refractories, and engineered ceramics continues to be a major sector of the US economy. A wide range of materials can be made into ceramic products, although relatively few earth materials make up most of the ceramics in today&apos;s markets (Table 1). Most ceramic products are made from clay or a related material. The long history of clay use in the ceramics industry stems from its variable and sometimes unique physical and chemical properties, as well as its ubiquitous occurrence and relatively low cost. Clay is important to ceramics because of its plasticity, moldability and filterability, chemical content, color. refractoriness, solubility. corrosion resistance, electrical properties, and other properties that result from the essentially two dimensional morphology of the individual clay mineral platelets. Because of their basic relationships to the chemical and physical properties of clays, the chemical and mineralogical content have been the subject of continuous studies over the past few decades. Advances in knowledge about the chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of clays are responsible for most of the advances in processing. The need to remove off-colored contaminants, minerals with low melting points, and soluble salts has resulted in beneficiation by wet processing methods such as water washing. Water washing is restricted to kaolins, although low cost methods of water washing have been extended more recently to ball clays in Europe. High intensity magnetic filtration and flotation technologies have noticeably improved the quality of kaolins and broadly expanded their use in the ceramics industry. In addition to products for construction (e.g., brick, tile, sewer pipe, field drain pipe, cement, fiberglass, roof granules, and paint) and manufacturing (e.g., refractories, kiln furniture, sanitary ware, pottery, and dinnerware), clays are used in calcined form as ceramic fillers, carriers, extenders, and grogs. Ceramics suppliers are under economic pressure in several of these product areas. Manufacture of refractories in America has declined as steel production has decreased.
