Canada's gypsum industry began over two hundred years ago in the Maritime Provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's ten provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.38 million tonnes of crude gypsum and seventeen processing plants manufactured 2.49 million tonnes of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production, however, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum poses a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

"In a time that seems to be dominated with nothing but bad news coming from the mining industry, there is a success story that has been quietly happening in Southwestern Wyoming for more than 60 years, and it is one that is likely to continue for many decades to come.Beneath the wind swept high desert plains of Sweetwater County, WY, about 32 km (20 miles) west of Green River, lies the Green River Basin where five companies, including Tata Chemicals North America (TCNA), are mining the world’s largest known deposit of trona and, in turn, are collectively producing 15.3 Mt/a (17 million stpy) of soda ash.“We have a long-term growth story that has been, and will continue to be a steady earner for many years to come,” said J. Martin Keighley, managing director of TCNA who has been in charge of the mine, formerly known as General Chemical Industrial Products Inc., for Tata Chemicals for about three years.According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Keighley is safe with his prediction of future success. The BLM estimates that there are enough reserves in the Green River Basin to last another 2,000 years. Currently, four trona beds in the Green River Basin are being mined and in all, there are 25 major trona beds that occur within the Wilkins Peak Member of the Upper Eocene Age Green River Formation. The trona deposit as a whole covers about 2,500 km2 (1,000 sq miles) within the Green River Basin.And imagine, this economic mainstay in the region was discovered accidently.Prior to 1948, soda ash, the salable commodity that comes from trona and is used in a host of products including glass and detergent, was produced synthetically. In 1938, an oil and gas exploration team working in the Green River Basin came away with a find that would change the soda ash industry and the physical and employment landscape of southwestern Wyoming forever. Within 10 years, the communities of Green River and Rock Springs, which were built largely on the back of coal mining and railroads, had another commodity beneath their feet."

When discussing what Coal Mine Safety in the future will be, it is important to examine three areas which at present provide significant parameters to the industry. These three areas are: 1) Safety improvements in mining equipment; 2) Labor-management relations; and, 3) The politics of coal mine safety. EQUIPMENT Over the past several decades significant safety improvements have been made in the types of equipment now in use in most operations. Many of these improvements have evolved through mandates from either the U. S. Bureau of Nines, MESA, MSHA; and in some instances, the states. Cabs and canopies are examples of federal mandates while the use of ATRS initially was a state mandate.

There are two places in the world where potash, trade name for potassium chloride, is economically recovered from naturally occuring brines by solar evaporation. One is at the Dead Sea and the other at Wendover, Utah. American Potash and Chemical at Trona, California recovers potash from natural brines, but uses fuel to accomplish evaporation. Under proper meteorological conditions the use of solar evaporation might be desirable from the economical standpoint. Of course, this may not be true when, if by artificial evaporation, a group of very valuable salts are recovered. This is the case of the American Potash operation at Trona. Solar evaporation has its limits. The working temperature is low. We may say, just to cover most areas of the world where solar evaporation may be practical, that it will take place between 18°C and perhaps around 45°C. In most cases the average working temperature expected will be around 25°C.

The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. Snow storms lasting several days and leaving up to two meters of snow have been experienced, while fierce winds are corm=.

Nothing in Turkey is simple. Its his¬tory is long and convoluted, its culture fascinating, its metallogeny diverse, and its geology very complex. This article will focus on the geology of western Anatolia and the precious metals poten¬tial of this third of Turkey. Any gold produced by mines in Tur¬key since the early 1900s has been a by-product of the mining for other met¬als, such as copper from the massive sulfide deposits of the Pontics. Archaeological records, however, prove that gold was mined from the Pactolus (present day Gediz) River and refined by Croesus at Sardis in about 550 BC. Other records and legends make it possible that gold was mined before 1200 BC for the Homeric City of Troy (Priams treasure?) about 25 km (15 miles) east of Canakkale at Mad¬endag and Kartaldag. A final legend of antiquity suggesting gold in what is now Turkey relates to King Midas. And, indeed, the city-state belonging to a king of that name has been recognized near the city of Eskise¬hir. More recently, precious metals have been mined at Madendag-Kartaldag in the late 1800s. Arapdag, near Izmir, remains the only "authenticated" epith¬ermal precious metal deposit in Turkey (Mosier et al., 1985). With this spotty record, why the sud¬den interest shown by at least five Euro¬pean-based, three or four US-based, and several other international mining firms and their Turkish subsidiaries? Like other aspects of Turkey, the complete answer is not simple but, reduced to its basics, has three parts. Turkey, relative to many developing nations, has a stable, democratic form of government (although it also has a for¬midable bureaucracy) whose currency exchange rate is premised on the US dollar. New laws promulgated since 1983 have opened the country and welcomed foreign investment. Some have even provided investment incentives. The Mining Law of August 1985 made sweeping reforms of the old land tenure system. This law made it possible for a foreign-based company to have a wholly-owned Turkish subsidiary en¬gaged in mining. Equally important is the belated recognition that western Anatolia, while geologically compli¬cated, is today basically a province Neogene extensional tectonics having many of the geologic attributes of the leading gold producing province of the US - the Basin and the Range. Geologic rationale for precious metals exploration Tectonic/lithologic framework: Alle¬gorically and simplistically, Anatolia during early Neogene (middle Miocene) can be likened to a tube of toothpaste with the cap off. It is squeezed in the vise formed by the Arabian plate mi¬grating north toward the southwest end of a stable Asian platform. The "tube" was compressed. It could not expand to the east because it was sealed by what is now southern Russia and Iran. The filling of the tube escaped to the west, in the direction in which the cap was miss¬ing (Fig. 1). So developed during the middle to late Miocene the western-most struc¬tural province of Anatolia. This was done by a process aptly termed tectonic "escape" by Sengor et al (1985). This province is dominated by exten¬sional tectonics much like the Basin and Range of the western US and has an estimated extension of between 30% and 50%. The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. The lack of industry standardisadesign of consolidation programs, with a reliance on experience-based guidance for rockmass consolidation design. consolidation products. The program was designed to provide the industry with a set of geomechanical property index tests and a data set that can be utilised by rock mechanics engineers as baseline information for product evaluation and engineering design. The laboratory work undertaken is critical to understanding the exact small-scale mechanical properties of these products and testing was carried out at Monash University for various states of curing of each product. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.

Debate on an appropriate, acceptable method of regulating mine and mineral processing wastes has been ongoing since Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) on October 21. 1976. Final regulatory determination on which mineral processing wastes are excluded from the RCRA hazardous waste regulations under the Bevill amendment was made by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on June 13, 1991. Regardless of whether a mining or mineral processing facility?s waste stream(s) lost or maintained its exclusion status under the Bevill amendment, that facility can expect more stringent regulation of affected waste streams. These more stringent regulations will be added to an already complex regulatory maze, which includes the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), as well as state and municipal environmental regulations.

Block caving, unlike most other conventional forms of mining relies principally on the natural forces within the rock mass to fragment and transport the ore. Obviously, not every orebody can be satisfactorily mined by block caving. In the early stages of mine planning an attempt should be made to assess the benefits of the block caving system relative to others, and develop a reasonable mining concept that may be used to provide preliminary information to mine planners and financial specialists. It is the intention of this paper to outline some basic geotechnical parameters that are essential to: 1) Assessing the feasibility of block caving an orebody and 2) Providing semidetailed information relative to mine design based on drill hole and other data.

Sampling is used in all scientific, engineering, marketing, and financial disciplines. The scientific theory of probabilistic sampling is a well established field, providing a general framework for basic methods that can be applied in fields that would appear to have little in common. The revolution in sampling occurred, in part, as a response to the need for quality control in industry during the Second World War. Since this time probabilistic sampling methods have been replacing pre-scientific non-probabilistic methods of sampling. This has not been the case, however, in the mineral industries in the United States. No general agreement on a theory applicable to all sorts of particulate materials has been reached. As a result, non-probabilistic methods are still widely used and the measurement of sampling precision - the hallmark of scientific sampling - is unknown. Much of the research on particulate material sampling that has been carried out over the last 40 years can be characterized by a lack of theoretical reasoning and rigor, an unwillingness to acknowledge previous work, and a lack of integration with existing, established scientific sampling theory. Non-standard statistical terminology is used and often standard statistical terms are misused. The confusion that has resulted is reflected in ASTM and IS0 sampling standards and in the practice of particulate material sampling.

Three run-of-mine bituminous coals, which ranged in rank from low volatile to high volatile A, were floated at nominal -28 mesh (590 µ m), -100 mesh (150 µ m), and -400 mesh (37 µ m) feed particle sizes with selected pyrite depressants and a dispersant. For the coals tested, pyrite and ash-forming minerals were usually rejected best at a -100 mesh feed particle size. Depressant additions tended to improve flotation selectivity between pyrite and coal. When joint dispersant-depressant systems were used at -100 mesh (150 µ m) feed particle sizes, the total sulfur content of the clean coal decreased further. For a comparable coal yield, less fuel oil collector was required for the flotation of -100 mesh coal than was required for the flotation of either -28 or -400 mesh feed.

Four companies ? H.C. Spinks Clay Co., Inc., Imerys, Old Hickory Clay Co., and Unimin Corp. ? mined ball clay in four states in 2013. On the basis of preliminary data, production was 1 Mt (1.1 million st) with an estimated value of $47 million. Production increased by 3 percent in tonnage from 973 kt (1.1 million st) with a value of $45.1 million in 2012. Tennessee was the leading producer accounting for 64 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 67 percent of total ball clay production was airfloat, 22 percent was crude or shredded and 11 percent was water-slurried.

Mining activity is important for the development of humanity. This development must be understood from the Academy where it allows showing alternatives for the industry performance. Likewise, these mining companies need to improve their results. Historically, a few years ago the application of the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criterion was verified, which is positioned as a factor/regulator in the design of the performance of industries in general. ESG as an integral part of the concept of sustainability serves as a tool to conceive mining without conflicts and with a reputation based on trust in the interrelation of the university, industry and society. Therefore, the academy must strive for new knowledge in a way that allows it to continue in the virtuous circle of constantly feeding it. In this context, the best mining practices are implemented in constant questioning of their activities. The scientific essence of the industry supported by the academy developed in an operational dynamic is addressed. Finally, the objective of this research work is to interrelate 3 variables: ESG, Academia, and the Mining Industry, where the transition of knowledge and the role of each variable in relation to each one can be understood. This allows for an additional understanding of mining in the future with new mental attention.

This study aims to provide industrial perspectives on the current U.S. metal mining engineering education and areas for improvement. An online survey was designed to seek opinions from the U.S. mining industry. Findings indicated a shortage of qualified graduates from the current U.S. metal mining engineering education system. The qualifications that need to be improved include engineering sciences underlying mining methods, mining design experience, mining feasibility study, the connection between theory and practice, and understanding of the overall mining operation. The survey also identified future desired qualifications, such as the ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed and sufficient field experience. Respondents recommended enhancing collaborations between industry and academia.

In the crushing and grinding of metallics for beneficiation, the sizing is normally done to liberate the metals or sulphides for further processing to improve recoveries of the basic metals or minerals. The objective is to reduce the ore in size through various closely controlled stages to that degree of fineness which gives an economic liberation of valuable mineral, but which avoids as much as possible the production of sliming fractions. A different philosophy applies to the crushing and grinding of Gypsum. Our requirements normally demand controlled grinding and/or crushing of the material not only to a fineness suitable for further processing of the mineral into end products, but to produce various sizes of material which are them- selves saleable products. The majority of our tonnage ultimately ends up in stucco for Wallboard. Therefore, our mineral reduction is normally designed toward this end, but it is done in a manner that permits drawing off inter- mediate products to meet various Customer requirements. This forces us into compromises at times in our equipment installations, and our equipment must sometimes be more versatile and complex than we would like it to be. We try to process our basic rock, Gypsum, for the most efficient size reduction. We market 5 to 6 different sizes intermediate to the end product, which generally is the fineness of material to be used for stucco for Wallboard, and we do this with controlled crushing, grinding and sizing cycles of the material. To summarize, we use a different philosophy of crushing and grinding than the metallic field which uses comminution or crushing and grinding to improve recovery, whereas we choose our equipment to crush and grind primarily for product performance.

Virtually all fluorine consumed by the aluminum industry is as the electrolyte of the Hall-Heroult process for producing primary aluminum. A small amount of fluorspar is used but most fluorine is consumed as either aluminum fluoride or cryolite. Some fluorine- containing materials are used in secondary aluminum production, but the amount is negligible compared with primary production requirements. Any analysis of the future of the primary aluminum industry must take into account two powerful and closely related driving forces which are shaping that future. These factors are increasingly stringent restrictions on the emission of pollutants and the continuing cost-price squeeze. Nowhere do these factors combine more forcefully than in the area of fluorine consumption. We can safely assume that industry efforts to reduce fluorine consumption will be intensified and that these efforts will be fruitful. This paper will attempt to identify and quantify the factors and trends of fluorine consumption during the next decade. We will be concerned primarily with the demand for new fluorine. Sources of new fluorine will not be treated.

Search and rescue operations in mining heavily rely on humans. In the context of emergency situations within underground tunnels, the potential to utilize sensory technology for navigation assistance holds the promise of saving human lives. Our research introduces a device configuration designed to enhance the performance of search and rescue teams. This setup integrates LIDAR and thermal cameras with the Microsoft Hololens, facilitated by the NUC computer and ROS Bridge. Performance assessment involves quantifying the extent to which a user is willing to venture into a light-deprived section of the mine prior to necessitating supplementary illumination. The preliminary outcomes highlight the significant potential of augmented reality assistance in offering indispensable aid to first responders, thereby greatly augmenting the efficiency of search and rescue missions conducted during critical circumstances.

Meridian Gold Company's Royal Mt. King mine (RMK), a subsidiary of FMC Gold Company, is located approximately 40 miles east of Stockton, California on the western edge of the historic mother lode belt. Gold ore at RMK is associated with a series of northwest trending fault zones hosted in either meta-volcanic or meta-sedimentary rock types commonly referred to as greenstone sulfide and carbonaceous phyllite. Mineralogy studies show gold in both ore types to occur primarily as electrum in the form of 1 -20 um inclusions in pyrite with varying amounts of free milling gold. In carbonaceous ores, gold was not found to be closely associated with carbon. At the start of the current mining operation, three major ore resources were identified. North Pit and Gold Knoll pits were the major greenstone reserves while Skyrocket Pit contained over 60% of the total reserves as carbonaceous ore. Since North Pit and Gold Knoll were to be the first areas mined, the mill began operation in February 1989 with a flowsheet designed for greenstone ores with a carbonaceous expansion anticipated after depletion of the greenstone reserves.
