The Chino concentrator commenced operation in 1982 as a SAG-ball mill circuit which could process 37,500 stpd of ore. Since 1982, a series of process improvements such as the addition of two stages of SAG recycle crushing, allowed throughputs to increase to more than 48,000 stpd, at the expense of significantly coarser flotation feed sizing and reduced recovery. To compensate a third (tertiary) stage of grinding consisting of four 1250 hp Vertimills was installed which has allowed the flotation feed size and recovery to return to historical levels. The design and operational characteristics of the Tertiary Grinding Circuit are described.

Safety management must be the number one priority of all management's production and profit objectives. A cooperative study was undertaken by representatives of the environmental community, the mining industry, and state government to identify and resolve environmental issues associated with base and precious metal mining in a neutral atmosphere before a commercial mining development is announced. The study included testing Minnesota's as-yet-untried non-ferrous mining regulatory program using three hypothetical mining developments sited in environ-mentally sensitive areas where future mining could occur. Results include identification of critical paths for regulatory decision making, identification of particularly sensitive environ-mental issues that will need continued deliberation before resolution, and characterization of data necessary for environmental review and permitting decisions.

An alternate development drilling strategy to the one currently in use at the nine was investigated using geostatistics for a portion of the pit. The study area consisted of 4,000' x 5,000' in plan and 1,080' in elevation. The massive orebody, the three-dimensional nature of the problem, and the location of ultimate pit limit in the study area all created some unique problems in devising the development drilling strategy, as compared to the two-dimensional tabular deposits such as coal deposits. Rather than using the confidence interval of the global reserve estimate as the main criterion for development drilling, the confidence interval of short and medium range mine planning blocks was used as the objective. Based on somewhat arbitrarily selected level of confidence, the results from this study showed that a total of 50 DDHs rather than the planned 62 DDHs is sufficient in the study area, if the selected confidence levels are acceptable to the management. This paper also emphasizes the importance of the particular objectives being used in development drilling and how they influence the "optimai" place- ment of the development drill holes.

Its mission is to promote responsible and sustainable mining among new generations while fostering a culture of equality and respect. This comprehensive educational program integrates sustainable development goals and includes workshops led professionals and external experts who share their personal stories to inspire students from rural and urban educational institutions to follow their dreams. Additionally, for this year 2024, the project development and implemented an interactive mobile application that educates users about the use of minerals in everyday life through four levels: Minerals in the Home, Minerals in Medicine, Minerals in Transportation, and Minerals in Agriculture. This multi-faceted approach seeks to raise awareness about the importance of mining in Peru’s economic, environmental, and social development, ultimately fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens who understand the vital role of mining in a sustainable future.

Financial analysts have often called National Mine Service Co. the only "pure play" company to the mining industry, meaning that an investment in NMS is an investment in the mining industry. As a leading manufacturer and supplier to the industry, National Mine Service does enjoy a close and direct relationship with mining. It is the only independent company that offers products and services that include mining machinery, health, safety, instrumentation, mine supplies, and reconditioning services for hydraulics, electronics, and machinery. But what is a positive relationship in periods of economic upturn can be eauallv as negative during the downturns. In fact, National Mine Service has felt the resounding blows of the current recession in the mining industry. Two-Fold Strategy Rising unemployment, corporate losses, bankruptcies, and mine closings in particular have directly affected NMS. But the company embarked on a strategy several years ago that included a two-fold approach to becoming less dependent upon the vagaries of the US coal industry. One strategy was to develop additional products and services for other mineral industries such as potash, trona, and salt and, where possible, apply the technology developed for the mining industry to industrial markets. The other strategy was to become a more international company. The objective was to make export sales a minimum of 10% of total corporate sales. Even today, NMS believes this is a good strategy as opposed to diversifying because its expertise is in mining, not in other areas. Artisanal and small-scale underground gold mining in Colombia plays a significant role in the country’s economy, but it faces persistent occupational hazards that threaten worker safety. Despite mining economic contributions, outdated technologies, limited risk management practices, and insufficient regulatory enforcement have led to recurring workplace accidents, many of which have been fatal. This study presents a systematic review of mining-related accidents over the last decade. Through geo-referenced analysis, high-risk municipalities were identified, and the frequency of accidents was correlated with the mining legal status and operational practices of these municipalities. The findings underscore the urgent need for evidencebased interventions that are tailored to the country’s unique mining context. Ultimately, this research contributes to the global discourse on mining safety by highlighting practical pathways to reduce occupational risks and promote safer, healthier workplaces in resource-constrained environments.

Greenbank Terotech is a member of the Halley & Mellowes Group of Companies and is accredited t AS3902. Greenbank has been involved within the wear resistant lining industry for over 20 years. Initially supplying cast Basalt piping systems through to the present day breakthroughs with SiTech cyclone linings. The challenge of finding the most cost effective cyclone lining has been a difficult process. Over the years many varieties of ceramics have come and gone. In particular within cyclone applications, many people have become disillusioned with the term "Ceramic." In practice, it was discovered that if a ceramic worked in one part of the plant, it did not necessarily work in the cyclone area. A good example of this is Alumina chute and pipe linings. An Alumina lined cyclone underflow bend would provide exceptional wear resistance, whereas an Alumina Spigot would have failed miserably. After Alumina's were tried, Silicon Carbides were experi­mented with. The results in many trials were mixed. What worked at one mine did not work at another. The results did not conclude decisively that ceramics were here to stay within the hard rock cyclone area. It was then that Greenbank Terotech started to look at the reason "Why do some linings work and others don't." We came to the conclusion that the matrix holding the particles together had to be the key to a successful cyclone material. At the time we looked at materials such as Alumina Bonded Silicon Carbides, Metallic (Aluminium) Bonded Silicon Carbide, 99% Alumina Ceramics and Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbides, but all these materials either suffered from chemical attack on the Aluminium matrix (via cyanide) or the matrix simply was not hard enough causing wear rates to be excessive. It was then we looked at SiTech. SiTech is a unique material in that the primary particles are Silicon Carbide, but the matrix is made up of a Secondary Silicon Carbide formed within the reaction bonding process.

Historically, there have been many occurrences ofmine fires and explosions recorded in the United States and other countries that have demonstrated the existence of explosivemethane–airmixtures, herein referred to as explosive gas zones (EGZs). The risk of mine explosions can increase if the EGZs migrate out from the gob into the surrounding mine entries. Fluctuating barometric pressure is the common cause for EGZs outflowing or outgassing from the gob. Numerical analysis using a 3D computational fluid dynamics method was developed to fully understand the outgassing phenomenon. A number of simulations using various magnitudes and periods of barometric pressure changes indicated that the EGZ outgassing potentially occurs due to lags in pressure, which are strongly influenced by mine conditions and ventilation systems. An early warning system with a real-time pressure monitoring and the application of gob ventilation boreholes are recommended to detect and mitigate explosion hazards from gob outgassing.

Production tests at Reserve Mining Company's iron ore pelletizing plant established that rubber-lined balling dm produce a green pellet equivalent in quality to those produced in conventional balling drums equipped with reciprocating cutter bars. The flexing action of the rubber liner prevents concentrate buildup in the drums, eliminating the need for a cutter bar. Advantages of the rubber-lined drum includes a reduction in maintenance and operating manpower, reduced bentonite consumption with less drum surging, reduced power consumption, and improved drum on time.

The relationship between hydrothermal ore deposits and hot spring systems has received intensive study in recent years, particularly as a consequence of interest in the energy potential of geothermal systems. Base and precious metal deposition in surface pools and at shallow depths in modern geothermal systems has been recorded in numerous publications (1, 2, 3) Theoretical studies of hydrothermal fluid flow at depth, connected to surficial hot springs systems, have been presented by White and others (1), Cathles (2) , Henley and McNabb (3). As a result of these and additional studies, numerous hydrothermal ore deposits are thought to have originated as genetic parts of larger geothermal systems. In particular, it appears that metal precipitation is greatly enhanced in zones of boiling where volatiles and steam are escaping (4). High grade, near surface concentrations of base and precious metals, deposited as a result of partial vaporization of rising fluids, are such a common aspect of modern not spring systems that ore deposition models are becoming based on what may be called a geothermal model. In its most general terms, this model requires an anomalously high thermal gradient which acts as the driving force behind a convecting hydrothermal system. The water may be entirely meteoric or may be In part at least of other origins. The water migrates towards the higher temperature area, becomes heated, and picks up alkalies and metals by dissolving minerals along the fluid path. As water exits to the surface above the heat source, a mass balance requires the incoming hot water to rise to replace the lost water. As the water rises past the elevation where the hydrostatic pressure is insufficient to prevent boiling, then boiling will occur. Depending on the salinity and the temperature of the water, boiling can occur anywhere from great depths to near surface. Boiling results in a loss of volatiles, a pH rise in the fluid phase, cooling of the remaining fluid, a rise in oxygen fugacity, a concentration of salts in the remaining liquid, and precipitation of ore and gangue minerals.

In 2016, a 3.7-ML magnitude event caused by mining activity occurred at a longwall mine in southwestern Virginia which was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and felt by local residents. The event was the largest of its kind since a global mine design change by the operator was instituted in 2008 following three large events in 2005, 2006, and 2007 (3.4, 4.3, and 3.4 Moment Magnitude (Mw), respectively). Two of the three pre-2008 events (2005 and 2007) damaged ventilation controls in the mine which fueled a mine fire. In 2016, the mine’s management requested researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to access geological data and determine what parameters could possibly lead to events of a magnitude of 1.0 ML or greater. Evaluation of 2152 geological data points and modeling revealed three major geological factors in common with the majority of the 181 recorded +1.0 ML events from 2009 through 2016. Phosphate rock is a naturally occurring mineral which, in upgraded form, is important to both agriculture and industry. Phosphate rock normally must be upgraded before it can be assimilated and used. Most of this upgrading is now carried out by chemical means, largely through the reaction of a strong inorganic acid (primarily sulfuric acid) with the phosphate rock to remove major impurities and to produce soluble phosphate. A less important but yet still commercially significant conversion method involves the thermal reduction of phosphate rock at high temperature in an electric furnace to produce elemental phosphorus. The elemental phosphorus is then converted to usable end products. This conversion route is a more costly method than the chemical route, but it has the advantage of being able to produce chemically pure phosphorus derivatives. On the other hand, the use of phosphate rock for agricultural application-primarily for use as a plant nutrient ingredient for fertilizer -does not require the same level of purity. As a consequence, the chemical method of phosphate rock upgrading is the predominant technique for producing phosphatic fertilizers.

Initial reserves were proven and bulk ore samples sent to the U.S.A. for pilot plant testwork. Cliffs Western Australian Mining Company Pty. Mountain Pass, California is located 96 km southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has an exposed surface orebody within view of Interstate Highway 15. Mineral prospecting in this region dates back to about 1860 followed by the discovery and subsequent mining (1870-1895) of silver bearing veins on the north slope of nearby Clark Mountain. In contrast to the four lane divided interstate highway of today, all supplies needed for mining during this early history were transported by wagons from San Bernardino which is 320 km west. Many small lead mines were active in the area during 1917-20, and a small gold mine operated in 1941-42 within 100 m of the orebody presently being worked. In 1949 two prospectors searching for uranium with a Geiger counter discovered a radioactive vein outcrop at Mountain Pass. Further investigation revealed the presence of a large amount of a light-brown, heavy mineral to a depth of about 2 m. A sample of this unidentified mineral was submitted to the Boulder City, Nevada, U.S. Bureau of Mines where a spectroscope examination shoved high level rare earth oxides, carbon dioxide, and fluorine. These results indicated the mineral was bastnasite.

This paper describes the implementation of specialized software in mine planning at the Cleveland-Cliffs’ managed Empire Mine on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience on the eastern end of the Marquette Range beginning in the early 1960’s. The Empire Mine, in its thirty-fifth year of production, uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low grade magnetite orebody, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short and long range planning.

Meramec Mining Company, a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and St. Joe Minerals Corporation, is engaged in the mining, concentrating, and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during an exploration program to discover new lead orebodies. An airborne magnetometer survey which was run by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Geological Survey, and several min¬ing companies was published in 1950 and showed an anomaly in the Pea Ridge area. Test holes drilled in 1953 and 1954 revealed the presence of a large orebody of probable commercial significance; additional drilling in 1956 and 1957 provided confirmation of this. Meramec Mining Company was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began in the latter part of that year. The Pea Ridge orebody lies under about 1300 feet of sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick, and lies in an approximate east-west delineation. The orebody dips about 800S and is of unknown depth. The ore is primarily high grade magnetite with smaller zones of specular hematite, The Pre-cambrian wall rock is rhyolite porphyry. The mine is serviced through two concrete-lined shafts, 19 feet 1 inch in diameter and 2500 feet deep. No. 1 shaft, equipped with an "A" type head-

Both private industry and the Interior Department have become alarmed about the enormous amount of Federal land that has been withdrawn from appropriation either under the Mineral Leasing Laws or the Mining Law of 1872. According to a recent article by Gary Benethum and L. Courtland Lee, governmental actions have withdrawn nearly 400 million acres from the operation of the Mining Law of 1872 and over 500 million acres from the Leasing Laws. An addition al 100 million acres for the Mining Law of 1872 and 70 million acres for the Leasing Laws are either encumbered or being managed in such a way as to constitute a defacto withdrawal from mineral development. This means simply that mineral exploration end development under the Mining Law of 1872 is either prevented or discouraged in an area the size of the states of California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and one half of Colorado combined. Under the Mineral Leasing Laws, exploration and development is either prevented or discouraged in an area equal in size to all the states east the Mississippi River, except Maine.

The ultimate objectives and interest in removal of sulfur from high sulfur coal include: (a) reduction of the atmospheric load that con- tributes to the problem of acid precipitation; (b) reduction of ash which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers and the problem of ash disposal; and (c) alleviating the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. The cost of sulfur removal in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal-refining industry. The value of refined lower sulfur coal will be influenced by the national commitment to the environment as well as economic considerations.
