The treatment of ores in preparation for fatty acid flotation is characterized by a wide divergence in methods, and attempts to define "common practice", even for the same type of mineral, are usually of little value because of the numerous exceptions. Such factors as desliming, pulp density, pulp temperatures, and reagents for conditioning are successfully employed under conditions representing almost extreme opposites. More precise control of variables is necessary than with sulphydric flotation processes It appears likely that variations result from independent development of a process from the multitude of variables that characterize fatty acid flotation and the ores of non-metallic minerals. Consequently, a symposium is a suitable way of presenting a summary of pretreatment methods for fatty acid flotation processes, together with froth control practices, as they exist today.

A novel methodology to estimate gold recovery by gravity is presented. The methodology makes use of a population balance model which represents gold liberation, breakage and classification behaviour and applies pre-concentration and recovery performance curves to gravity-recoverable gold to predict overall recovery. Derivation of the necessary parameters is explained and demonstrated using data from an actual gravity circuit and one projected application. The methodology makes it possible to estimate the performance of circuits with large gold circulating loads and relatively low unit recoveries (e.g. jigs), or with high recoveries on a bleed of the circulating load (e.g. Knelson concentrators).

The Chinese energy and mineral industries are readying themselves for a period of dynamic transition, unprecedented in the country's long and sometimes turbulent history. The transition comes as a result of the government's new program of "Four Modernizations" in its agricultural, defense, industry, and science and technology sectors. The announced program is generally considered by Western observers to be a moderate, pragmatic approach to get China on the road to industrial parity with Western nations by the year 2000. The game plan calls for integration with the West to beef up Chinese know-how and the purchase of foreign technology to supplement areas where China lacks the ability to do so itself. While the role of energy and minerals is not specifically mentioned in the program, it was made clear to ME that China realizes the basis of any sustained modernization program is tied closely to the health of its minerals sector. Various published reports have indicated the existence of an already vibrant energy and minerals sector with world rank production in coal, iron ore, tin, antimony, cement, pyrite, asbestos and tungsten to name just a few. For the most part, except for the export metals, the primary focus of China's production has been on fulfilling domestic needs. Now the new initiatives are aimed not only at self-sufficiency, but also on propelling the country's natural resource clout into international prominence. With a mineral resource base that is considered by many westerners a potential bonanza, China's new long march toward modernization will be an exciting adventure, well worth watching. Big Projects Spark Excitement China's renewed commitment to a more liberal program is as much a desire to "walk on its own two legs" as it is a backlash from the frustrating years that followed the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and early 1970s. Much of the early excitement was initiated by China's Premier and Party Chairman Hua Guo-feng in speaking to the fifth National People's Congress (NPC) in 1978. Here, Chairman Hua presented the Communist Party's 10-year blueprint for economic development. Specifically, the Party's plans called for completion of 120 large-scale industrial projects by 1985. Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification (nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte, ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion), and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stems from the 1970s and 1980s and is not always easily accessible. This paper will detail the series of tests conducted and provide updated results obtained (high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited Mn/Fe), as well as comment on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

Three-point bending (TPB) tests were conducted on prismatic Nestos marble (Greece) specimens. The specimens were instrumented with piezoelectric sensors, and comprehensive recordings of acoustic emission (AE) signals were obtained. Machine learning in the form of artificial neural networks (ANNs) was then applied in an effort to investigate whether specimen load evolution can be predicted as a function of AE signals. A number of ANN models were developed, and the optimum model was selected based on the highest coefficient of determination (CoD) value as well as the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) value that was calculated for each model. The best performing ANN model exhibits accuracy above 99% with an RMSE value below 4%. It can be concluded that ANNs can potentially be applied to predict rock behavior under load especially when such loads lead to failure.

"INTRODUCTIONThe South Napa Earthquake of 2014 caused ground motion at numerous reinforced concrete-lined (shotcrete-lined) winery tunnels in Napa County and Sonoma County, California. The occurrence of seismic ground motion at these tunnel complexes, known as wine caves, presented an opportunity to reevaluate seismic performance of reinforced concrete and reinforced shotcrete lined tunnels. The authors of this paper updated the most recent comprehensive compilation and evaluation of case studies by Power and others (1998), which correlates peak ground acceleration (PGA) at tunnel sites to damage. For this update, the authors evaluated the seismic performance of 31 wine caves near the South Napa Earthquake epicenter; including some of the 90 wine caves they designed since 1991, some caves designed by others, and additional caves constructed by contractors that they frequently work with. Tunnel designers can use the new data presented in this paper to help evaluate the usefulness of detailed seismic design analyses. THE SOUTH NAPA EARTHQUAKE The South Napa Earthquake occurred at 3:20 AM Pacific Daylight Time on August 24, 2014. Figure 1 shows the approximate location of the epicenter, the measured/estimated PGA contours, and the location of wineries with wine caves added to the database where the PGA was at least 0.2 g. The epicenter was along the West Napa fault, about 5 miles south-southwest of downtown Napa, California. The earthquake moment magnitude was 6.0, and measured/estimated PGAs were up to about 0.7 g. The duration of strong shaking was about 10 seconds. This earthquake was characterized by right lateral strike-slip fault movement, ground surface rupture, and after slip at the ruptures. Increased surface water flows were observed at seven creeks after the earthquake. Groundwater level rises of up to 5 feet were observed in Sonoma County wells after the earthquake. The earthquake was the largest seismic event in the San Francisco Bay Area, which includes Napa and Sonoma Counties, since the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. The Napa event caused an estimated $400 million in damage. This damage included moderate to extensive structural damage to older commercial buildings and to some newer buildings in downtown Napa. This damage resulted from ground motions, subsequent fires, and failed underground utility systems."

This study focused on joint interpretation of the aeromagnetic and radiometric data to allocate and describe the structural elements and mineralization zones such as uranium, gold, and sulfide in the Gebel Umm Tineidba and its surroundings, Eastern Desert, Egypt. The study region is covered by exposures of Precambrian rocks such as gneisses, migmatites, ophiolitic mélange, metavolcanics, younger granites, and Quaternary sedimentary covers. The application of the total intensity magnetic and reduced-to-pole maps, power spectrum, analytic signal, tilt-angle, and local wavenumber maps helps in recognizing magnetic sources distribution, lineament features, and mineral zones delineation. The obtained results indicate that the depths of the deeper NE–SW, NNE–SSW, and N–S trending structures extend from 400 to 1750 m and shallower ones range from 100 to 400 m. Finally, the main trends of these structures affect the probable mineralization zones.

Continental Oil Company has spent over four years of research on the fundamentals of potash solution mining. This work included laboratory investigations of salt solution, brine flow, selective extraction of KC1 from sylvinite, and control of cavity geometry. Laboratory results were expanded by means of a series of field tests, and subjects such as well completion and hydraulic fracturing were added to the investigation. Both single-well and multi-well mining systems were studied in the field work. The current paper discusses one field test in which potash was solution mined from a thin sylvinite ore zone in the Carlsbad Potash Basin. A two-well mining system was used for this test. The potential economic value of solution mining has been recognized for many years, and applicable United States patents date back into the past century. Principal advantages of the process over conventional mining include (1) the use of drilled holes and solution techniques in- stead of excavated shafts and caverns and (2) the ability to mine both land and marine deposits through any type of overburden geology and below conventional mining depths.

The objective of this paper is, firstly, to summarize several field developments utilizing the art of hydraulic fracturing as it has been extended into various mining applications. Secondly, to summarize the understanding of the hydraulic fracturing processes; and lastly to discuss researchable areas and possible future applications. Hydraulic fracturing was developed as a method of stimulating production of oil from oil producing formations. The primary paper by Clark (1) in 1949, describes the process of placing a hydrostatic pressure of sufficient strength on the producing formation of an oil well that the rock apparently cracked, and then, on allowing the well to flow back, a higher rate of recovery of oil was enjoyed. The interpretation of the process mechanism was that the formation rock was cracked to a considerable distance from the well bore, increasing the drainage area; thus, the productivity of the well was measurably improved. Figure 1 is illustrative of this process. This development was of major significance to the oil producing community and considerable research and development ensued. Improvements in method, engineering development of equipment, and research to ascertain the optimum application of fracturing practice led to a highly sophisticated, but specialized technology. The Production Research Division, Continental Oil Company, vigorously pursued research in this area in the 1950's with a resulting number of process improve¬ments. The research group, published a significant number of technical papers on these various researches. One of the developments was the process aimed at controlled orientation of the fractures, either in the vertical (2) or horizontal (3) orientation.

The closure of TSF represents a critical milestone in the life cycle of mining operations, requiring the integration of technical, environmental, and social dimensions to ensure long-term safety and sustainability. The GISTM introduces the concept of “safe closure” as a demonstrable technical condition in which there are no ongoing material risks to people or the environment. This status must be validated by an independent technical reviewer and formally approved by the Accountable Executive. This article presents a risk-based methodology to support the achievement of safe closure, aligned with the principles and requirements of the GISTM. The proposed approach emphasizes the need to identify, assess, and manage closure and post-closure risks progressively throughout all phases of the TSF life cycle: from site selection and design, through construction and operation, to closure implementation and long-term monitoring. The methodology integrates key elements of effective risk management, including comprehensive knowledge bases, consideration of climate change, credible failure modes, continuous monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and governance. The ALARP principle is applied to demonstrate that residual risks have been reduced to tolerable levels. By incorporating closure planning from the earliest stages and adopting a risk-based view throughout the entire life cycle, this methodology aims to support mining organizations in achieving a verifiable and responsible closure of tailings facilities, in line with international best practices such as those of ANCOLD and ICOLD. The proposed framework offers a practical contribution to strengthening the credibility, effectiveness, and sustainability of tailings closure processes.

Analytical and computer models are used to evaluate information obtained for the design and development of mine water control systems. Geologic, hydrologic, geophysical, biological, and chemical data must be gathered for use during all stages of mine development. Models allow the geohydrologist to use these data to predict the amount of ground-water inflow, the impact of dewatering and stream diversion on the hydrologic regime, equipment needs, and dewatering schedules. Stratigraphic and lithologic changes, faults, recharge and discharge areas, and aquifer parameters should be incorporated into the model to design and develop an effective mine water control system.

Draglines are dominant machines and the most electricity consumers in surface coal mines. With the growing price of energy, environmental concerns, and the high sensitivity of mine profitability to dragline productivity, any improvement in efficiency of draglines can be beneficial for mines. Research has shown that operator skills have a significant impact on energy efficiency of loading machines. This study suggests a method to identify the key parameters that lead to differences in operator energy efficiency (responsible parameters). First, correlation analysis is used to identify parameters that are correlated to energy efficiency. Second, linear regression of a difference matrix is used to determine responsible parameters. Since this method is based on pair-wise comparison of operators, equal number of cycle is required for pairs of operators. Complete case analysis (CCA) is used to handle missing data problems. The final conclusion is made after removing the effect of random sampling and by considering all pairs of operators. Identifying responsible parameters can improve operator training programs. The suggested method is illustrated with a case study using field data.

Oklahoma contains extensive resources of high-purity gypsum that were deposited in the Anadarko and Hollis basins during Permian time. The gypsum resources and reserves are estimated to be about 48 billion short tons and a; located in the western portion of the state. Oklahoma is the largest producer of gypsum products in the United States. The Blaine Formation and the Cloud Chief Gypsum contain several beds of minable thickness. Four stratigraphic units in the Blaine Formation are quarried in Oklahoma. The Shimer, Nescatunga, and Medicine Lodge Members are quarried in northwest Oklahoma. The Van Vacter Member, consisting of three gypsum beds, is quarried in southwest Oklahoma. The Cloud Chief Gypsum is quarried in the west-central part of the state. The gently dipping gypsum in the Blaine Formation generally crops out along low escarpments and is covered in the downdip direction by increasing overburden, consisting of sand, shale, and/or dolomite. Anhydrite occurs in the downdip direction under the thicker overburden. The Cloud Chief Gypsum crops out as hills, which are eroded remnants of a more widespread, massive sulfate unit. All of the gypsum produced in Oklahoma is extracted using quarrying methods. A variety of products are made from gypsum quarried in Oklahoma. The products are manufactured from uncalcined, calcined, and deadburned gypsum. Products vary from raw, ground gypsum used for agriculture, to high-value-added industrial plasters, cements, and fillers produced from calcined gypsum. A sampling of the many products manufactured from Oklahoma gypsumincludes: (1) agricultural-soil amendment; carrier for insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides; calcium supplement in animal feeds; (2) gypsum wallboard-common, fire-resistant, and water-resistant varieties; (3) industrialgypsum plasters-art and casting, pottery and ceramic, molding and tooling, crayons, wall patching; (4) industrial gypsum cements-oil-well cement, high-strength statuary, high-strength tooling, fiber-reinforced architectural, road and bridge repair; (5) food and pharmaceutical-filler and binder in aspirin and other medicines, yeast activator in brewing of beer, moisture absorbent in bread and pizza dough; and (6)portland-cement retarder-ground with clinker to control setting time.

The Robinson project is based on the porphyry copper and gold deposits in the Robinson Mining District, near Ely in Eastern Nevada. The district was mined from the late nineteenth century to 1978 by Kennecott Copper Corporation and its predecessors. Operations ceased when falling copper prices in the late 1970's made their outdated mill and smelter complex at McGill uneconomical. In October 1991, Magma Copper Company (Magma) acquired the many claims that cover the known porphyry copper deposits in the district These occupy a disturbed area about nine miles long and three miles wide between the towns of Ely and Ruth. Magma proposes to build a copper / gold mine and concentrator and expand the existing gold leaching facilities. Several pits, previously mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, will be enlarged; the use of larger, more modem equipment will result in higher productivity and lower operating costs in general. ICF Kaiser Engineers, of Oakland, California, were awarded the con-tract for detailed design of the process facilities, which was essentially complete by the end of 1993. The project at present is awaiting completion of the environmental permitting process; state air and water permits are in hand, and the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) current schedule indicates that the final obstacles to construction will be cleared by early fall of this year.

While a body of work exists on intelligent systems for guiding occupants out of buildings during an emergency, the problem of guiding miners out of a mine during an underground emergency has not been explored. Underground evacuation fundamentally differs from building evacuation because of differences in the regulatory regime and uncertainty regarding the number of occupants. The potential for implementing an intelligent miner guidance system is buttressed by the fact that miner tracking systems, along with communication and sensor networks, already exist in underground mines. This work presents a method based on a local positioning system, in the form of a network of “nodes” at major “intersections,” which can then be used to guide miners to safety. We have developed a path-planning algorithm, based on Dijkstra’s algorithm and the local positioning system that can provide miners with the optimal escape path in an emergency. The algorithm is validated with scenarios at the Missouri University of Science & Technology Experimental Mine demonstrating the potential to include smart technology in mine emergency management and response planning. INTRODUCTION Underground mines are hazardous environments with a higher than usual risk of safety emergencies where miners have to evacuate the mine to save their lives. Mines have always trained miners to evacuate or shelter-in-place in minimum time. Jalali and Norrozi (2009) opined that the three major components that help miners in case of emergency are pre-planned optimal escape routes, decreasing delays, and improving the education of miners. In fact, Goodman and Kissel (1990) suggested that fatalities arising from mine accidents could be reduced by 50% just by decreasing delays in finding the pathways in case of emergency. The proposed work can assist miners in finding escapeways quickly in case of emergency. It is very important to have a pre-planned evacuation strategy that is clearly communicated to miners to ensure the safety of all (Conti, Chasko & Wiehagen, 2005).

"Nucleation and growth of copper on 316L stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate was studied in the absence and presence of chloride ions and/or organic additives – HydroStar® 4208, DXG-F7® and Cyquest® N-900 – using a potentiostatic technique. The current–time data obtained at 0.16V versus the SHE were analyzed using nucleation and growth models. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of deposits produced at 300 A/m2 show that the addition of 20 mg/L chloride ions increased the size and reduced the number of copper nuclei. Potentiostatic current–time data from the electrolyte without organic additives, and confirmed by SEM images, indicate progressive nucleation with two-dimensional growth under diffusion control. None of the organic additives studied at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L with 20 mg/L chloride changed the nucleation and growth mechanism, but the additives increased the number and reduced the size of copper nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the stainless steel substrate.IntroductionElectrowinning of copper is an important process in the manufacture of high-purity copper metal. Approximately 20 percent of the world’s refined copper is produced from acidified copper sulfate solutions by electrowinning (Schlesinger, Sole and Davenport, 2011). In many plants, copper is electrodeposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrates for a period of 6-7 days, after which the copper is stripped from the blanks. Even though the deposition time for a commercial copper electrowinning circuit is around one week, it is critically important to control the nucleation, growth and nature of the initial deposit (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992).Deposit morphology and structure are influenced by the real current density at the electrode surface. The real current density across the cathode surface is made uniform by proper design of the electrowinning cell and electrodes and careful operational practice. Even with good design and control, some current maldistribution occurs. The outcome of severe current maldistribution is poor deposits that affect product quality and/or increase energy consumption. To combat current maldistribution and create a larger operating window in terms of current density, temperature and copper concentration, small amounts of organic smoothing agents – traditionally, guar products – are added to copper electrowinning electrolytes. Moreover, these additives inhibit the growth of copper nodules and lead to improved deposit quality by producing bright, smooth and dense cathodes.Recently, the use of polysaccharides, such as HydroStar 4208 and DXG-F7, and polyacrylamides, such as Cyquest N-900, has been reported in commercial electrowinning tankhouses as replacements for guar (Ashford, Clayton and Sandoval, 2012; Robinson et al., 2013; Sandoval, Morales and Bernu, 2010). However, little information has been published on the effect of these new organic additives, especially regarding the nucleation and growth mechanisms of copper electrodeposits in their presence."

The economic application of real time computer control can be broken down into 2 broad areas of concern. The first would be in gaining the most efficient utilization of energy. The second would be in improved product quality. This paper will be primarly concerned with the first area of efficient energy utilization as that area has the greatest effect on costs and thus net profits. Most process control strategy attempt to achieve the greatest comminution with the least amount of energy thus maximizing efficiency. A more direct approach to energy control involves a total mine and mill energy management system. In most cases these systems have an ability to achieve a very short payback period with the greatest return on investment.

In 1995 I was asked to participate in a litigation matter between a corporation and its insurance carriers concerning insurance coverage for remedial costs at a large, environmentally contaminated closed-down former industrial facility. One of the buildings on this site became known to the lawyers representing the company as “the infamous Building 8”. This building housed millions of documents retrieved from various locations at the facility while it was being shut down. It became apparent that the facility management had no document destruction policy, and thus Building 8 contained internal memoranda, notes, copies of correspondence, permits, operating records, inventory records, and the like from fifty years of operation. Needless to say, some of these documents, all of which were subject to discovery by the insurance companies in the litigation, contained material that was less than helpful to the company’s case. Of course, there were also a few helpful documents, but the overall usefulness of these records was outweighed by the negative impact they had on the conduct of the litigation. A second example involves e-mail. Several years ago, acting on an anonymous complaint that we later discovered was made by a disgruntled former employee who had been fired, a small army of federal environmental investigators descended on a client’s operating facility and, armed with a search warrant, literally commandeered the facility’s EH&S department. The investigators impounded the computers of the EH&S personnel and extracted all of the data from the hard drives of those PCs, as well as all EH&S related files from the hard drives of several servers used by the facility. These computers contained many years’ worth of stored e-mails, draft letters and memoranda, and other documents that provided grist for a four and one-half year criminal grand jury investigation of the facility and its EH&S staff. Both of these companies would have benefited from following a rigorous, enforceable, corporate records policy. Here is a third problem. My client had, during the 1960s, made a brief, and unprofitable foray into the nuclear fuel processing business. It ultimately sold the subsidiary, and was forced to give the purchasing company a broad indemnity against future liability. As might be expected, years later the facility was found to have considerable soil and ground water contamination both by chlorinated solvents and low-level radioactive material. Several years into the remediation program, my client discovered a tractor-trailer load of files, apparently removed from the subject facility, sitting in a parked trailer in a company-owned lot 300 miles away from the facility, where they had been for nearly thirty years. These documents were not helpful to the client, but had to be reviewed, at considerable cost, by paralegals. Moreover, several of the boxes turned out to have been mildly radioactive, setting off a chain of health and safety issues that consumed tens of thousands of dollars of legal expenses before they were resolved. Today, formal, enforceable corporate records management programs have become an extremely important element of overall corporate management. What was for most of the last century little more than a low level warehousing function is now a critical, actively managed, operating function that affects every level of corporate management. The rapid assimilation into corporate culture of electronic document management and the prevalence of e-email as the primary means of internal communication have created records management complexities the likes of which were not even conceived of fifteen years ago. Record preservation and destruction are no longer matters that can be handled on an ad-hoc decision making basis. Because of regulatory requirements affecting various classes of documents and the litigation consequences of ad hoc retention and destruction of corporate business records, and the need to have the ability to quickly retrieve documents in either a litigation or business negotiation context, a set of records management norms have evolved over time that have become the core elements of virtually every corporate records program. Microcomputer analysis has long been a technique for engineering professionals to improve the theoretical and practical design of continuous mining systems. Such work has been typically composed of modeling observed events and then introducing a variety of known elements with predicted results to compare against the results of the model. Programs written in BASIC, Cobol, Fortran, or other language dominated such efforts. These programs have taken years to develop and prove out. This paper explores a new management tool used at TMC on a daily basis to track and improve continuous mining systems through the use of microcomputers and Lotus 1-2-3 software. By analyzing data provided by section foreman, shift foreman, and maintenance personnel against predetermined goals, new production targets are developed, weaknesses in the current mining systems are identified, and the results of changes are measured. The results of this system on the productive output of TMC systems are on the order of ten percent improvement.
