The purpose of this talk is to report the answers to the-'two following questions: I. What unique services does the mining industry expect of mining and mineral processing engineers? II. What suggestions does industry offer to educators to help revamp curricula to meet the needs of a changing industry? As the result of many questionnaires filled out in person by presidents, managers, superintendents, chief engineers, metallurgists, and other responsible individuals in operations and management of large and small metal and nonmetallic mining companies in the U. S., and to some extent abroad, we now have some, specific answers to the above questions. Although answers to questionnaires continue to arrive at this writing (February 10) the volume already received is sufficient to clearly justify certain conclusions and observations. A copy of the tally of the first 117 questionnaires received accompanies this report, and I am certain that a compilation of additional questionnaire data will merely reinforce, the trends in thinking that have been' established thus far. "INTRODUCTION Successful management of megaprojects, meaning delivery within budget, on time and according to expectations, is a fundamental requirement. Many projects have been successful, some have not. This paper reviews megaprojects1, drawn from the author’s projects over the last 50 years, with “lessons-learned” and a summary of recommendations that, if implemented, would improve megaproject management and delivery. Characteristics of these projects are summarized – including outcomes related to key factors such as politics, management, organizational structure, contracting methods, cost estimates, risk and other elements. The projects include the Washington D.C. Metro, Boston Southwest Corridor, LA Metro, Toronto Rapid Transit Expansion Program, BART San Francisco, MARTA Atlanta, London Underground and the Washington State Highway megaprojects – including the SR520 Floating Bridge and the Alaskan Way tunnel. Other projects that illustrate successful, innovative management and contracting methods include the Madrid Metro (low-cost delivery), the Sydney Northside Storage tunnel (outturn cost, alliancing) and the Lake Mead tunnel (working in partnership, risk management). KEY ISSUES A characteristic of megaprojects is that their complexity increases exponentially with size (Reilly 2010, Galloway et al. 2012). These projects are very visible politically, have many stakeholders who must be satisfied and generally span many years and political election cycles. To be successful they must meet expectations, function efficiently, and be delivered under, at or close to budget and schedule. There is a widely-based perception that large, complex projects are always delivered late, over budget and with problems. Specific examples include projects such as Tren Urbano in Puerto Rico – $1.28 billion over initial budget (+133%), the Silver Line Transitway Project in Boston – $286 million over budget (+90%), the London Jubilee Line Transit Project – 2 years late and £1.4 billion (+67%) over budget, the Channel Tunnel Rail Project – £3.7 billion (+80%) over budget, Denmark’s Great Belt Link rail and road link (54% over budget), the 2003 Woodrow Wilson bridge tender in Virginia (72% over estimate) and Boston’s Central Artery Project – several billion (perhaps 100%) over what would have been a realistic initial budget and years late (Reilly 2001c, 2004a; Salvucci 2003)."

"Molybdenum, in the form of molybdenite, is a common byproduct of many copper mining and concentrating operations. Contrary to most copper sulfide minerals where recovery is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is much more complex with fully liberated particles commonly lost to tailings. It is this complexity that facilitated the necessity for a geometallurgical investigation of molybdenite from the Bingham Canyon deposit. The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect mineralogy and/or mineralogical attributes (i.e. morphology, angularity, liberation, size) have on the recovery of molybdenite in the processing circuit. A set of samples was collected from the ores and products produced by Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Copperton Concentrator. All samples were analyzed using normal polarized reflective light, Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and X-ray diffractometery (XRD) techniques. The results of this investigation revealed the presence of two distinctly different types of molybdenite, which have been identified as the two polytypes of molybdenite, i.e. hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins that are located in the core of the Bingham Canyon deposit. The 3R polytype occurs as disseminated, “ball”-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance along the margins of the mineralized intrusive body or central core. Concerning their metallurgical behavior each type exhibits unique metallurgical properties that are consistent with those reported in the published literature. For instance, the 2H polytype is easily ground and kinetically “faster” floating with surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This commonly results in the production of a high quality molybdenum concentrate under normal operating conditions common to most copper concentration operations. In contrast, the 3R polytype is difficult to grind and kinetically “slower” floating with surface attributes that less amenable to recovery under normal operating conditions. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R polytype, modifications to the normal operating parameters may be necessary to improve the recovery of molybdenum. Finally, a preliminary investigation into the metal budget of porphyry Cu and Mo deposits indicates that a positive correlation may exist between the total economic metal budget and the polytype content. For example, higher concentrations of the 3R polytype appear to be more prevalent in Au-enriched porphyries versus Mo-enriched porphyries. This observation may also serve to help explain why it is easier to obtain high rates of recovery in Mo ± W-rich deposits, which contain little to none of the 3R-polytype. Consequently, the potential for the metal budget of a porphyry deposit to be used as an indication of the molybdenite polytype present, as well as its impact on the economics (exploration) and/or on the processing circuit (plant design) could exist. In conclusion, this investigation highlights the necessity of understanding the mineralogical properties or characteristics of molybdenite and/or other economic mineral(s), as these can and will have a direct impact upon the performance and plant optimization."

The elimination of ultrafine (<10 µm) clay particles is essential to the treatment of abandoned coal-washing plant tailings for the recovery of the remaining coal fraction by enhanced gravity processing. Effective hydrocyclone classification is required to remove this fraction. The highly variable composition and particle size distribution of such wastes creates significant difficulties in the operation of hydrocyclones for such classifications. Hydrocyclone laboratory investigations and their plant setup require lengthy or time-consuming tests. The use of empirical models of such classifications frequently requires modification to correspond to actual operating conditions. Results of the evaluation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to predict hydrocyclone classification of coal-washing plant tailings are presented. Results of the standard k-epsilon turbulence, SSG turbulence and large eddy simulation CFD models are compared with the results obtained from analyzed hydrocyclone classifications. The CFD models tested are shown to be very effective in the simulation of hydrocyclone classifications for the determination of the classification particle size and adequate for determining the efficiency index values for many applications. The large eddy simulation model was identified as the most precise, but it is recommended that all three models be improved simulations of classifications above and below the classification particle size.

"The Rapid Excavation & Tunneling Conference (RETC) is a world-renowned event that attracts some of the best minds in the global underground construction and tunneling industry. These professionals represent all parts of the global tunneling and underground construction industries - contractors, engineers, owners, consultants and equipment suppliers.More than 110 technical papers in 21 sessions will be presented over two-and-a-half days. Paid attendees will receive a proceedings volume of the conference. The proceedings will also be available from SME. In addition to the technical programming, the accompanying exhibit will include 155 exhibitors occupying 175 booths, providing RETC attendees the opportunity to get a look at the latest in equipment and service technology. Three short courses will be held on the Sunday preceding the start of the show. And there will be plenty of opportunities for attendees to meet and chat during several social activities that are scheduled throughout the conference."

Since the turn of the century there has been a marked increase in population, industrial and economic growth, and in energy requirements in the United States. During this time our energy needs have been met largely by natural gas and petroleum, but as our reserves of these materials are depleted, we are going to depend more and more on our large reserves of coal. The mining of coal for electrical power production has increased at a rapid rate during the past decade. Over half the coal produced in the United States in 1971 came from mines utilizing surface mining operations (Paone, et al, 1974). Surface mining is expected to increase as the rising cost of oil places more demand on coal for energy. About 57 percent of the coal reserves in the United States lie in the area west of the 100th meridian. About one-quarter of this can be mined by current surface methods. This would involve the disturbance of approximately 1.5 million acres (600,000 hectares). By the year 2000, projections indicate disturbance of about 200,000 acres, or 300 square miles, in the West. Mined areas receiving more than 250 mm of annual precipitation can usually be revegetated without irrigation if the spoils are properly shaped, the surface layer consists of suitable plant growth media, and proven techniques in rehabilitating disturbed rangeland are applied. Areas receiving less than 250 mm of annual rainfall or with high evapotranspiration rates pose a more difficult problem. Revegetation of these areas can probably be accomplished only with major inputs of water and good management (National Academy of Science, 1974).

The understanding of public debates over mineral exploration and mining largely originates from exceptional situations such as mining accidents of conflicts. Less is known about how mining is portrayed and understood under more conventional settings. What storylines dominate the local day-to-day public debate? This article presents results from a comparative case study focusing on newspaper coverage of mineral exploration and mining in three European countries representing different geological and socio-economic contexts. Newspaper articles from the Geyer-Erzgebirge region in Germany, the Andalusia region in Spain, and Northern Finland are studied. The sample looks into the period between September 2018 and February 2020 and shows that regional newspapers report about mining issues relatively intensively even in the absence of major accidents or other media events causing peaks of attention. The tone of the articles is generally neutral to positive towards mining activities, reflecting the specific local settings, historical experiences, and future expectations. Despite the different contexts of the three countries, there were considerable similarities to the topics highlighted, including common themes of mining revival, mining events and social interaction, history of mining, and damages related to mining. Past, present, and future employment opportunities related directly or indirectly to the mining sector are key storylines. Another recurrent underlying theme is the need to balance environment and safety risks and socio-economic prosperity, typically covered through ordinary disputes among the mining sector, public authorities, regional non-governmental organizations, and local initiatives.

This paper will discuss the background information about rock cutting tools used for soft ground excavation, their history and evolution. A brief review of the current state of the art manufacturing technology will be presented and some parameters related to the material used in the drag and conical type pick cutters and their impact on their life and performance will be explained In addition, the selection procedures for choosing the right bit for excavation of a particular geological formation will be reviewed A set of guidelines will be provided for initial selection of the tools for various machines and rock formations. The methods for estimation of the tool life in various materials and the influencing parameters along with limitations of the rock cutting tools will be discussed as well.

America&apos;s bulk commodity transportation systems have taken on a new look in the 1970&apos;s and 1980&apos;s. Railroad systems, barge lines providing inland and intra- coastal waterway transportation, and Great Lakes carriers have undergone substantial changes through mergers and acquisitions, consolidations of ownership and control, and construction of modern intermodal transportation facilities linking railroads and water carriers. The new look has generated some concerns and opportunities with regard to producers and shippers of bulk commodities which are characterized by the necessity of moving large quantities of heavy materials long distances. Clearly such transportation requirements call for efficient railroad and water carrier services. Shippers of commodities like coal, grain, .chemicals, minerals, ores, forest products, petroleum products, and heavy manufactured goods find reductions in transportation competition lead to concerns that rates charged by carriers will not be sufficiently constrained by market forces. At the same time, new policies on contracting for railroad services can lead to greater efficiencies, a rewarding opportunity for carriers which should be shared with shippers and consumers of bulk commodities. Then, of course, there&apos;s a related problem that in the absence of effective competition, the benefits of increased carrier efficiency will not be passed on, in part, to shippers and consumers, causing losses in markets for producers.

Prolonged subzero climatic conditions impose some unique engineering problems for the developer and operator of open-pit mines in the Far North. The remoteness of the job site and the extremely cold, long, dark winters severely tax both man and machine in the quest for the Arctic&apos;s rich mineral wealth. Undoubtedly the singular most troublesome problem for the engineer is Permafrost which underlies about 201o of the land area of the world and about 85% of the state of Alaska. Permafrost has its impact on building construction and mine excavation, while posing a more pervasive threat to the-delicate ecologic balance within the Arctic wilderness. Yet the difficulties associated with mining up North may not be as overwhelming as has been previously supposed. For example, the lowest temperature recorded at Point Barrow is -560F, whereas Montana has recorded -69.7° F.. There are no specially designed machines for mining and construction in the Arctic, and efficient equipment utilization is maintained through proper operation and servicing techniques. However, neither equipment or people can be assumed to function normally at -40°F. Special techniques in drilling, blasting, and ripping are being used to yield economically competitive ores. Overall, a fundamental understanding of the nature of Permafrost will allow the engineer to deal expeditiously with an Arctic mining venture and at the same time to deal fairly with Arctic environment.

Maximum fan efficiency can only be obtained when the fan has the correct combination of size, speed, and blade setting to provide the required flow of air against the mine resistance. As the mine grows older, resistance decreases unless old workings flow is restricted, and new combinations of speed and blade setting or different fan sizes may provide greater economy.

A ground-support system for grizzly and haulage drifts was tested in Magma Copper Co.&apos;s San Manuel mine. Eight two-piece, wide- flange steel sets were erected in a ventilation drift on the 2315 grizzly level. The sets were lagged with three different materials and back- packed with pea gravel and sand. The pillar on either side of the drift support system was instrumented with stressmeters and rock-bolt load cells, the backfill with pressure cells, and the steel sets with load cells. Results indicate a better survival rate than with typical monolithic concrete.

Mineral properties and mineral firms often trade at a market value that is significantly greater than the value indicated by discounted cash flow (DCF) techniques. A possible explanation is that DCF analysis does not consider the value derived from managerial flexibility. Presumably, then, at least some of the difference between DCF value and market value is due to managerial flexibility. This paper surveys the recent attempts to empirically quantify the value of managerial flexibility using option pricing theory. The results indicate that managerial flexibility, at least as measured by the option pricing methodology, falls well short of explaining the gap between DCF value and market value.

Rail access to Ontario International Airport (ONT) has long been a goal of San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to increase public transit options to ONT and provide incoming ONT passengers improved access to San Bernardino County and the greater Southern California region. This paper describes the planning for the Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) delivery of an emerging technology tunnel connection between the Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station and ONT. The paper discusses key technical considerations, challenges, and opportunities; conceptual configuration development; and construction planning and establishment of the footprint for the underground connection.

Over the past 15 years, the tunneling industry has pushed towards a higher degree of mechanization in nearly every phase of construction. The overall objective of the mechanization was to increase production and the level of safety in tunnel operations. However, the overall complexity of some systems have been a hindrance to a seamless transition to the newer technologies as increased maintenance requirements and re-training of skilled workers has altered the benefit curve for some innovations.

The porphyry copper province of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, is the largest copper producing region in the world. Most of the deposits occur in Arizona which now produces over 54% of the newly mined copper in the United" States. As the many recent discoveries are brought into production, Arizona&apos;s share of the nation&apos;s copper production will increase. The term "porphyry copper" as used in this paper includes all deposits of generally low grade disseminated copper mineralization amenable to bulk mining techniques. Therefore, copper deposits such as Pima-Mission, Twin Buttes, and Vekol where the copper mineralization occurs principally in the intruded rocks will be considered as "porphyry copper" deposits. Most of the deposits have been discovered since World War II, consequently, the southwest, and particularly southern Arizona is perhaps the most intensively explored area for copper deposits on earth. Most of the major natural resource companies in the United States and Canada maintain exploration offices in southern Arizona. To illustrate the success of exploration efforts, the location of porphyry copper deposits either known or producing prior to World War II are shown on figure 1 and the deposits discovered since World War II which are either in production or in the exploration and development stage are shown on figure 2.

Energold specializes in mineral exploration in remote locations with limited infrastructure. Such locations require the smallest footprint possible going in, leaving as little or no evidence on their way out. Energold?s rigs can be transported by helicopter or manually on footpaths as narrow as 1 m (3.3 ft). They set up quickly and then are struck and packed out, with any sign of their presence quickly disappearing behind them. Energold has teamed up with Atlas Copco and its team of engineers in North Bay, Ontario to design small rigs capable of drilling to a variety of depths, as required for each project.

The trip from Denver southwest to Gunnison crosses seven main geologic and physiographic areas as shown on the accompanying map. These are: I Mesozoic and Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Denver Metro area from downtown Denver to the foothills near Morrison. II Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Front Range from near Morrison to the west side of Kenosha Pass. III Sedimentary and volcanic rocks of South Park (Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Tertiary) from the west side of Kenosha Pass to Trout Creek Pass. IV Precambrian granitic rocks (1,350-1,480 M.Y.) between Trout Creek Pass and the Arkansas River. V Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary rocks and sediments of the Arkansas River valley. VI Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks of the Sawatch uplift from Maysville to near Doyleville on the west side of Monarch Pass. VII Mostly sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous and Tertiary age from the Doyleville area west to beyond Gunnison. Each area will be elaborated in the following pages but no detailed road log is given since these are available elsewhere. An attempt has been made to point out some deposits and features of interest to economic geologists but it is by no means complete.

Southern Arizona has one of the world&apos;s principal concentrations of copper ore bodies. Twenty miles south of Tucson, close to the Mexican border at Sahuarita in Pima County, is the Twin Buttes mine. In mid-1973, the Anaconda Company and American Metals Climax Incorporated (AMAX) established a 50-50 partnership to operate and expand the Twin Buttes property. Anamax Mining Company was established as the operating company for this joint venture. The production from the Twin Buttes mine is shared between the two partners who market independently. A major expansion of the Twin Buttes operation has included an accelerated stripping programrne for the pit, an expansion of the sulphide concentrator, the construction of an oxide leach plant and a 57 MW diesel generating power station. Part of this major expansion, the large tonnage oxide processing plant was brought on stream in 1975 and is now close to design capacity. The "mine to market gap" has been closed by producing high-purity copper cathodes at the mine site from oxide ore reserves. By using a hydrometallurgical process route, copper production is possible with negligible effects on the environment.
