The shrinkage method of stoping with pillar support has been used at Agnes Gold Mine since mining commenced. Until recently, rock instability did not have any detrimental effect on safety or production. Presently sill pillars are failing not only on the current production levels, but also in shallower old worked-out areas. The incidence of failure raises the question as to whether the pillar dimensions are adequate at the current working depths and what their size should be at greater depths. The effect of pillar dimensions on the economics of the mining operation is of paramount importance because of the amount of ore that can be left unmined.

With the world’s ever-expanding push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source found in the USA is bastnaesite, a rare earth bearing fluorocarbonate mineral, currently mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it is essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to better utilize current resources. Therefore, a US Department of Energy Critical Materials Institute sponsored research program was carried out at the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy to expand the fundamental understanding of the industrial bastnaesite concentrate leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge, thermodynamic calculations and design of experimentation based lab testing, a novel single-stage hydrochloric leach system was created to optimize the rare earth extraction from bastnaesite. Historically, the existing industrial process has utilized a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach with liquid solid separations followed by a caustic crack stage of the leach residues. A series of single-stage leach experiments were run by reacting locked cycle flotation concentrates with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these patent pending single-stage tests have shown rare earth recoveries significantly higher than reported recoveries of historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the equipment required and the type and amount of reagents needed.

A unique machine has been designed for mining narrow veins. The machine, called the NONN, walks on the walls of the stope and carries a boom-mounted hydraulic impact breaker. The concept of walking on the walls allows an existing muck handling system such as LHDs to operate beneath the NOMN. The NOMM has four sets of legs which can be manipulated independently or concurrently to cause the carrier to walk in any direction and to turn sharp corners. The mining rate using the breasting method is targeted to be 25 t/hr.

"Water is a primary commodity for most industrial processes. It has become a global focus in light of climate change and population growth. Reuse of process water has two major benefits - minimize the amount of fresh water added now and minimize the amount of discharge water that requires treatment later.Mining and mine product processing has its share of reused water. For example, reclaim water from a tailings impoundment, overflow from thickeners and leach solution to raffinate and back again all demonstrate the use and reuse of water in mining circuits. Eventually, a mine reduces production or ceases operations completely, eliminating the option to reuse the impacted water and, thus, requires treatment of the remaining water.Current methods of water treatment remove the impacts, providing clean water for discharge, but leaves behind a concentrated waste that requires further treatment or disposal of a hazardous waste. Freeport- McMoRan is currently testing three water treatment technologies specific for sulfate and/or metal removal from mine impacted water with the approach of transformation not concentration. These technologies provide clean water for alternative use while creating byproducts that could be marketable, or disposed as a nonhazardous material, thereby reducing the cost and longterm liability of disposal.The selection of a water treatment process is site-specific. The volume of water, contaminant to be removed, disposal options, length of time for treatment, location of plant and reagents and discharge requirements are some of the factors that need to be considered when selecting a water treatment process. Common water treatment technologies for mine impacted water consist of low- or high-density sludge (LDS/ HDS), reverse osmosis (RO) and evaporative technologies. In addition to operating costs, these processes require additional handling of the concentrated sludge or brine. Advanced water treatment technologies include ion exchange, solvent extraction and metals precipitation with or without the aid of a biological system. Some of the more complex systems have a series of unit operations to achieve required discharge regulations."

Laboratory and pilot plant investigations have indicated that copper recoveries of 50% can be achieved with fine grinding and flotation of a copper reverberatory furnace slag, Microscopic and microprobe studies indicate that the recoverable copper is in the form of matte, chalcocite, and metallic copper; the percentage of copper in particles appearing to be copper-free was from 0.23 - 0.54%.

This paper is concerned with applied platinum resistance thermometry which involves many considerations absent in precision thermometry. The historical development of the Callendar-Van Dusen Equation which describes the resistance- temperature relation of pure platinum is discussed. The advantage of using platinum resistance temperature sensors over thermocouples is described, and the improvements in design and construction of these sensors that have come about in the past few years are discussed. Integral and remote bridges that convert resistance changes into voltage together with signal conditioning techniques and equipment for voltage or current signals are described. Errors encountered in temperature measuring schemes and methods to reduce these errors are summarized.

An immersed tube tunnel is one which is composed of elements that are prefabricated in a dry dock or on shipways, usually away from the actual tunnel site, floated into position and then lowered into a preexcavated and graded trench below a body of water. The elements or segments are then connected to each other under water, and the entire immersed tube tunnel covered with a protective blanket. Because water is essential, this method of construction offers advantages in a relatively limited field. By the very nature of the method, lowering elements to the bottom of an underwater trench, immersed tube tunnels are primarily used for crossing bodies of water, such as rivers, bays, straits, canals, etc. Although this method of construction was first used for a subaqueous railway crossing under the Detroit River in 1906-1910 and again in 1912-1915, for a four track subway tunnel under the Harlem River in New York, the reason immersed tube tunnels construction has not been used more extensively is simply a matter of economics. Bridges, compressed air tunnels and similar structures could be constructed at a lower cost.

The Eufaula bauxite-kaolin district in southeastern Alabama is an important source of raw material for the refractory industries in the United States. At the present time, five companies are mining and processing bauxite and kaolin from this district and a sixth company is holding substantial reserves. Mining operations are expanding, but finding new ore reserves is a major problem. The Geological Survey of Alabama sponsored geologic research in the Eufaula district to: 1) investigate the utilization of sandy kaolinS and other clays associated with bauxite-kaolin deposits; 2) find limits of the bauxite district, looking for possible extensions; and 3) study the geology of the district, looking for patterns or trends that may aid in finding new ore reserves. This work was done with the full cooperation of mining companies operating in the district and property owners. Research was aided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama. The investigation included detailed geologic mapping of mines, drilling in selected areas, and making mineral analyses of bauxite and clays. The mapping was performed primarily by pace and compass because of the complexity of the deposits studied, but aerial photographs were used to a limited extent. Drilling included both auger and core drilling. The auger drilling was limited to 100 feet, but core holes were drilled as deep as 200 feet. The term 'bauxite,' as used here, indicates a mixture of minerals containing more than 50 percent gibbsite. Bauxitic clay is a mixture of gibbsite and kaolinite that contains more kaolinite than gibbsite. The term "kaolin" indicates a clay composed of predominantly kaolinite. Other clays in the Eufaula district are composed of kaolinite, illite, quartz, mica, and goethite or hematite.

Companies are based in the developed world where a profoundly environmental ethic prevails with an emphasis on inter-generational equity – preserve now for the future. Increasingly, their operations are in the developing world where the emphasis is on intra-generational equity, and the distribution of wealth – providing opportunity for improvement today. The paper discusses the further implications of these realities and the factors facilitating or hindering the ability of mining companies to meet social expectation in these two distinct global cultures.

Direct force measurements were conducted using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the mechanism of copper-activation of sphalerite. The force measurements were conducted between a sphalerite plate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in xanthate solutions of various pHs. The glass sphere may represent the hydrophobic air bubbles interacting with minerals during flotation. The force measurements conducted with unactivated sphalerite in 10') M KEX solutions did not show the presence of hydrophobic force. On the other hand, the results obtained with copper-activated sphalerite at pH 9.2 and 4.6 showed strong hydrophobic forces. However, the results obtained at pH 6.8 showed no evidence of hydrophobic force, which provides an explanation for the difficulty in floating sphalerite at neutral pH.

Introduction An integrated oil company has two options in approaching strategic planning. It has to decide whether it is in business for the long-term. I state this in all seriousness. Those who help manage public companies have the responsibility of good stewardship of other people's money. We must decide whether continued investment in our basic business will generate a reasonable rate of return. With a world surplus of petroleum production capacity, and continuing downward pressure on prices, this question should be addressed by all oil companies. And a positive answer is not necessarily a foregone conclusion in all cases. The decision should be made based on proven competence in finding and developing petroleum reserves on a cost-competitive basis with other producers, and on a frank analysis of future prospects. This should include a realistic assessment of the projected rate of return on specific investment projects. If a company did not pass these tests, its strategy could take one of four paths. Diversification First, it could diversify. But recent history suggests that oil companies are not good at managing other businesses. Second, it could seek a buyer for its business at the optimum return for its owners. Third, it could sell its assets on a piecemeal basis. And, fourth, it could adopt a longer-range plan of self-liquidation by living off current recoverable reserves. In other words, by not investing in exploration and development, it could maximize short-term profit and pass the money back to shareholders in the form of dividends. The Conoco component of DuPont has a below-average cost of finding petroleum, a good track record of efficient production, and a full plate of projects that pass the test of return-on-investment. In short, Conoco is in business for the long-term. That fact, in itself, determines at least one key element in strategy. This is to extend the life of the petroleum reserve base while at the same time maintaining maximum efficient rates of production to provide a strong cash flow. A company that is able to maintain a strong reserve base will ultimately see the value of those reserves escalate as world oil supplies tighten. Our planners expect this tightening to occur within the next decade as demand grows and production in non-OPEC areas of the world begins to decline. An exploration program tailored to meet the requirements of reserve replacement and current production should have two basic parts. "The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown Project builds a 19km LRT corridor that includes a 10km underground portion, between Keele Street and Laird Drive. The West Tunnel Contract (ECLC1-15) includes 6.5km of twin EPB TBM bored tunnels with a 5.75m internal diameter precast concrete segment lining (PCTL), between Keele Street and Yonge Street. This paper summarizes the overall scope of work, the technical challenges faced and innovative solutions developed by the contractor during the TBM move across an existing subway tunnel using state of the art high capacity strandjack gantry crane.1. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is Canada’s largest urban region, populated with over 6 million people, and is one of the most rapidly growing regions in North America. One forecast estimates that the population of this region will increase to 8.6 million by the year 2031. In September 2008, Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, launched a 25-year regional transportation plan named “The Big Move” to cope with the expected increase in transportation demand. The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, one of the projects included in “The Big Move”, is a light rail transit (LRT) that will run across Toronto in an east-west direction between Mount Dennis and Kennedy along Eglinton Avenue. In October 2012, the West Tunnel Contract of the Crosstown LRT (ECLC1-15) was awarded to Crosstown Transit Constructors (CTC), a joint venture between Obayashi Canada Ltd., Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Technicore Underground Inc. The project includes approximately 6.2 km long twin bored tunnels, 9 cross passages, 1 emergency exit building, 7 sets of station headwalls, and an intermediate pair of extraction and launch shafts. Each of 6.5 km long twin tunnels are divided by the existing subway station into two drives: the first half from the launch shaft LS-1 (west of Keele Station) to the extraction shaft ES-1 (west of Eglinton West Station), and the second half from the launch shaft LS-2 (east of Eglinton West Station) to Yonge Station, as shown in Figure-1. The TBMs are extracted at ES-1 and moved to LS-2 over the existing Yonge-University Subway Line at Eglinton West Station before resumption of tunneling at LS-2."

Significant effort has been expended and considerable success has been realized m the application of instrumentation and automatic control equipment in the mining and ore processing industries. This effort has been applied principally to process equipment with the objective of increasing throughput, minimizing labor requirements and/or improving grade or product quality. Less spectacular, but quite rewarding has been the successful application of instrumentation and automatic control equipment to a wide variety of material handling equipments. This paper describes some of this work including: (1) automatic weighment of load-haul-dump units and trams underground; (2) automation of skip loading; (3) instrumentation applied in feeders and conveyors; (4) level measurement in bins, silos, vessels and sumps; (5) automatic blending of sized materials; (6) automatic loading of ships, trains and trucks; (7) automatic control of tailings disposal facilities

Critical to successful dump and heap leaching for gold, silver, copper and uranium are factors such as permeability, solution delivery to the ore, and solution recovery. This paper deals with possible techniques for successful accomplishment of these three factors. New developments as well as older techniques are discussed, together with rationale for use of some techniques in reference to others. The authors hope to present a checklist so that the ideal application to individual mine situations can be achieved. This involves a discussion of the merits of each different method and the situations for most logical application. It is hoped that such discussion will broaden the geographic areas where dump and heap leaching can be applied to include greater winter cold and tropical regions of large amounts of rainfall.

In mineral processing, poor froth-flotation performance translates into both an enormous loss of revenue and an unnecessary waste of the ore reserve. In this context, Bacís Mining Company developed a versatile new, high-performance flotation-cell design that can be incorporated into various flotation circuits. The main feature of this circular cell is that it is comprised of two separate sections, namely, a flotation cell that uses wash water to minimize the entrainment of fine gangue particles into the froth product and an external bubble generator that produces small bubbles of relatively uniform size at a specified aeration-rate. The air/water mixture is blended with the pulp by gentle agitation, so as to enhance particle-bubble aggregate-stability. Comparative metallurgical performance with conventional flotation cells show that the power requirements and operating costs for precious metal flotation are three times lower, while the concentrate grade is 7% higher and the recoveries of precious metals are 5% higher.

Mechanically suitable grinding mills became available to the mining industry in 1908. Since then, mill operators have been searching for the best material and design with which to line the mills. These liner systems had to fulfill several criteria. Most important, they had to last long enough in an operating mill to protect its structure from the abrasive wear of the ore and the grinding media. In addition, they had to be capable of efficiently transferring the energy from the mill to the mill charge in order to facilitate the grinding process. And these liners had to be easy to install and remove. The first liners used were generally made of cast white iron, Hadfield manganese, unalloyed high-carbon steel and composites of steel and concrete or cemented in flint blocks or natural stone. In the early 1920s, pieces of solid rubber truck tires were used as emergency repairs for broken cast metal liners. Thus was rubber first introduced as a mill liner material. The first patent for rubber mill liners was awarded in 1921 to James Denny and Rolla Watson, both of the Coniagas Mine in Cobalt, Ontario, and to Dale Barnum of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, NV. This original design was covered under US Patent No. 1470597. It had a fabric backed rubber that was bonded to the shell of the mill.

Flocculation is an important step in the treatment of coal preparation waste waters. The effects of polymer charge and molecular weight and solution pH and ionic strength on the adsorption and flocculation characteristics of a series of polymeric flocculants on some typical waste water constituents have been studied experimentally. The results indicate that the nature and extent of flocculation are strongly system-dependent. For the case of coal, both adsorption and flocculation behavior can be correlated with the polymer conformation in solution. For the mineral constituents, on the other hand, adsorption and flocculation depend also on the surface properties of the solid.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations), even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of possible explosion pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mine seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble, in combination with a conventional mine seal, so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed and attenuated, and the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a “passive mine blast attenuator” (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals.

"The underground coal mining industry in the United States has recently seen the occurrences of several high profile, multi-fatality events. The explosions that occurred at the Sago Mine in 2006, the Darby Mine in 2006, and the Upper Big Branch Mine in 2010 have caused a ripple in an otherwise steadily improving safety record. These events transpired in the midst of an unprecedented level of government regulations and modern safety technologies. The recent increase in fatal events in conjunction with a minimal decline of both fatal and non-fatal injuries over the past decade may signify that current safety practices have reached a level of diminishing returns. Risk management, a safety approach that has been successfully applied in various industries including mining across the world, may provide a means to surpass the safety plateau in the U.S. RISKGATE is an Australian risk management program for mines that shows great potential for application in the U.S. However, fundamental differences between the coal mining industries in Australia and in the U.S. prevent direct implementation. This paper discusses aspects of the RISKGATE body of knowledge that require some adaptation before this program may be applied to the U.S. mining industry. RISKGATE a risk management body of knowledge designed for the Australian mining industry that shows great potential for application in the U.S. This paper discusses aspects of the RISKGATE body of knowledge that require adaptation before implementation in the U.S. mining industry. These adaptations are based on differences in operating practices and governmental regulations. This discussion will focus on the three major U.S. risk areas of explosion prevention, ground control, and moving equipment."
