"INTRODUCTION Ganntas Tunnel is part of the modernization project of the railway between Alger and Oran, in Algeria. In order to double and rectify the existing line between El Affroun and Khémis Miliana, the alignment foresees the excavation of a 7 km-long twin tunnel. The excavation works started in June 2011 with the contractor CCECC, under the supervision of SYSTRA. Excavation is driven in conventional method by hydraulic hammer simultaneously on 8 different faces since excavation was started also from a junction window towards the middle of the tunnel. The minimum longitudinal distance to be respected between two contiguous tunnel faces has been set to 30 m. The tunnel cross-section is a 70 m² oval shaped profile, temporary support consists of shotcrete, bolts and steel ribs. A 30 to 50 cm thick cast in situ concrete final lining has been provided as well. When the tunnel reached a fault zone in soft clayey marls extreme squeezing occurred, works were stopped and re-profiling operations were carried out along more than 100 m. To date, works proceed at slow rate since high convergences are still monitored and completion of works is not expected before December 2016.GEOLOGY The project is located within the Tellian Atlas mountain area, including in particular the Djebel Ganntas massif in between Mitidja and Chleff plains. Djebel Ganntas is characterized by an extensive massif aligned in East-West direction with smooth slopes made of soft clays that emerge in multiple cliffs and ravines. On the top of it, along the edge, a more recent sandstone formation is found. The existing data on the geology did not allow to establish an accurate geological model at tender stage. In-situ investigations allowed at design stage to identify a Quaternary alluvial cover of clays and gravel, followed by a Miocene stratum divided in a sandy top layer and a lower clayey layer. From a structural point of view, geological maps suggest a north direction dip of layers, but the in situ surveys showed that layers were highly folded. The lack of information at tender stage on the structure of the geological series should have triggered an extensive investigation campaign at detailed design stage which did not take place causing serious consequences on costs and time at construction stage."

INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is charged under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 with establishing effluent limitations which must be achieved by point sources of discharge into the navigable water of the United States. Section 301 (b) of the Act requires the achievement by not later than July 1, 1977, of effluent limitations for point sources, other than publicly owned treatment works, which are based on the application of the best practicable control technology currently available as defined by the Administrator pursuant to Section 304(b) of the Act. Section 301(b) also requires the achievement by not later than July 1, 1983, of effluent limitations for point sources, other than publicly owned treatment works which are based on the application of the best available technology economically achievable which will result in reasonable further progress toward the national goal of eliminating the discharge of all pollutants, as determined in accordance with regulations issued by the Administrator pursuant to Section 304(b) to the Act. Section 306 of the Act requires the achievement by new sources of a Federal standard of performance providing for the control of the discharge of pollutants which reflects the greatest degree of effluent reduction which the Administrator determines to be achievable through the application of the best available demonstrated control technology, processes, operating methods, or other alternatives, including, where practicable, a standard permitting no discharge of pollutants.

With the demand for higher grade feed by the American steel industry and the depletion of the direct shipping ores from the Marquette Iron Range and elsewhere, there was a need to develop the low-grade orebodies. The large reserve of fine grained oxidized iron-formation at the Tilden Mine has been the object of research and development efforts to concentrate the iron oxides as far back as 1949. Preceding the present mining-concentration-pelletizing complex, about 6,500,000 long tons of direct shipping siliceous ore were shipped from the Tilden Mine. Following development of the concentrating and pelletizing flowsheets, engineering and construction was initiated to develop the mine and construct concentrating and pelletizing facilities to produce 4,000,000 LTPY of pellets from this low grade crude ore. Operations started in late 1974 with Algoma Steel, J&L Steel Corp., The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, The Steel Company of Canada, Ltd., Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., and Sharon Steel Corp. as participants. Cleveland-Cliffs operates and manages the operation. Due to the non-magnetic nature of the ore and the fine grinding required to liberate the iron oxide minerals, this crude ore was not amenable to concentration by conventional methods. The iron oxides of the Tilden orebody have a grain size of less than 25 microns and recovery of the finer, well-liberated iron oxides is essential. Conventional methods of des liming employing cyclones or thickeners were not feasible because of the excessive loss of iron oxides in the finer fractions.

"Mathematical modeling in conjunction with mineral characterization is widely used as a method for design and optimization of comminution circuits, to simulate the processes of crushing, grinding and classification. An important input parameter to the simulation models is the Run-of-Mine Particle Size Distribution (ROM PSD). The run-of-mine size distributions due to blasting have a great influence on the performance of a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill. In this paper, a mine case study was conducted where there are four primary geologic units and the material properties between the four units vary considerably. Also, the mixture of the four unit that will be mined at any given time also vary considerably. This presents a challenge in terms of optimizing the blasting for mill production throughout the mine life. As part of the case study, field rock mass characterization, laboratory rock mechanics tests, and laboratory breakage tests were conducted. The field characterization and rock mechanics tests provide material properties used to simulate the effect of different blast designs on run of mine particle size distributions (ROM PSD). The JKSimBlast software was used for these simulations. The rock breakage tests provide material properties used to simulate crushing and grinding performance. The JKSimMet software was used for these simulations. The goal of the mine is a mill throughput of 95,000 tonnes (104,720 tons) per day (TPD). Based on this goal, run-of-mine fragmentation analysis was conducted for four blasting designs resulting in powder factors of 0.44, 0.54, 0.64, and 0.94 kg/t. The powder factor of 0.44 represents a standard blasting design, while the 0.54 and 0.64 kg/t designs are high-energy blasts specifically to assist with mill production. The 0.94 kg/t design was investigated for the one geologic unit with very high strength. The results of the run-of-mine fragmentation analysis was then input into a crushing and grinding simulation model to predict the mill throughput for the time periods of 1-5 years and 6-10 years. The results indicate that certain blast designs are able to achieve the 95,000 tonnes TPD (104,720 tons TPD) goal, while other blast designs were not. A standard blast design with a 0.44 kg/t powder factor, for example, was not able to achieve the throughput goal, while a design with a 0.64 kg/t powder factor was able to achieve the goal in both the 1-5 and 5-10 year time periods. Traditionally, design of the grinding treatment is estimated using only the F80 value instead of the full distribution of sizes in the feed, but the finer sizes have great influence on the treatment of a grinder, particularly in the SAG mill."

This paper describes the application of pressure foam to control respirable dust in a double-drum longwall mining section. The feasibility of passing an adequate quantity of pressure foam through the shearer drum was initially established in the laboratory. Thereafter, underground testing of the foam system to determine its effectiveness on an active operating longwall was conducted in a mine in West Virginia. The foam system proved superior to the water spray system. The de- tails of the laboratory and field investigations, the results obtained, and the degree of acceptance of this system by the mining company are discussed in this paper.

"Mining is an important part of the economy of Namibia. In 2016, 11.1 percent of the GDP was the result of mining activities with 22 active mines (The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, 2016). Only one of them consists of an underground mining operation.The global annual production of fluorspar is approximately 5.4 to 6.3 Mt (6 to 7 million st) (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). Okorusu has produced on average about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2015).The Okorusu Mine is Namibia’s only fluorspar mine. Fluorspar was mined in an openpit mine with four individual pits (A-D) since 1980. In 2014, the mine closed due to the increased stripping ratio and beneficiation problems. The mine assets were bought by Gecko Namibia. Currently, Gecko uses parts of the processing plant for beneficiation of graphite from a neighboring mine. Figure 1 shows a panoramic view with the four pits and the mine village.The intent is to develop a concept for the further underground development of the mine. There are still about 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of measured resources left in the deposit, with an average grade of 27.5 percent CaF2. This study focuses on the underground mine design. The above-ground plant and facilities are considered as remaining unchanged.For solving the task to design the mine, a site visit for data collecting was conducted. Resource estimations were calculated based on existing drill data, and consequently, block models were created. The development of the mine design included the selection of the most suitable mining method, mining technology and mine organization. Moreover, some economic considerations are pointed out, followed by a profitability assessment."

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22-m (4-ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that SMCRA sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. There has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analyses indicate that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope.

The Spent Fuel Test-Climax (SFT-C) was con- ducted to evaluate the feasibility of retrievable deep geologic storage of commercially generated spent nuclear-reactor fuel assemblies. One of the primary aspects of the test was to measure the thermomechanical response of the rock mass to the extensive heating of a large volume of rock. Instrumentation was emplaced to measure stress changes, relative motion of the rock mass, and tunnel closures during three year of heating from thermally decaying heat sources, followed by a six month cooldown period. The calculations reported here were performed using the best available input parameters, thermal and mechanical properties, and power levels which were directly measured or inferred from measurements made during the test. This report documents the results of these calculations and compares the results with selected measurements made during heating and cooling of the SFT-C.

Meramec Mining Company, owned 50% by St. Joseph Lead Company and 50% by Bethlehem Steel Corporation,- is engaged in the mining, concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine which is located in the rugged, wooded Missouri Ozarks about 15 miles from the town of Sullivan or 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the middle 1950's by the St. Joseph Lead Company during the Company's intensive exploration program to discover new lead orebodies to replace the declining reserves of the famous Southeast Missouri Lead Belt. An airborne magnetometer survey was run by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Survey and several mining companies, (of which St. Joseph Lead Company was the principal supporter). The survey was published in 1950 and disclosed an anomaly in the vicinity of Pea Ridge. In 1950 test drill holes disclosed that under some 1300 feet of sediments there did exist an iron deposit of probable commercial significance. No further action was taken until 1956 when additional drill holes confirmed beyond reasonable-doubt-that this was a major iron ore discovery.

The first part of this article is a review of industry techniques and styles during the past 50 years. It is followed by my career history during the same period. The second part covers my ideas about what works in mineral exploration. These include estimates about discovery costs, thoughts about education of explorationists, organization of exploration groups and my opinions about the relative value of exploration techniques. Evolution of exploration techniques [Table 1] shows the evolution of mineral exploration techniques and styles from 1950 to 2000. During the first half of that period, there was a progressive increase in exploration drilling. During the second half, there was a decrease in prospecting and an increase in high technology, indirect exploration and a rapid increase in discovery cost.

Controlled and uniform distribution of the leach solution to a heap is of primary importance to achieving the desired rate of metal recovery and PLS grade from the heap. The step used to engineer the irrigation system are the same whether drips, wobblers or sprinklers are to be used. The mining rate, leach cycle time and heap height influence the heap cell size which along with the irrigation method selected controls the design of the irrigation system. The steps in the design procedure are explained as are the advantages and disadvantages of each irrigation method.

As Edward E. Runyan, 1983 AIME President, in an interview excerpt in ME, June, p. 607, stated, "...the AIME Transition Committee has recom¬mended to the AIME Board that each Constituent Society be allowed the option of separate incorporation, whereby each could become its own separate legal entity." Background The American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) was formed in 1871 by 22 engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Although originally a mining organization, it became a home for metallurgists, iron and steel industry people, and for the individuals in the expanding petroleum engineering profession. There are now four Constituent Societies: Society of Mining Engineers, located in Littleton, CO, 29,000 members; Society of Petroleum Engineers, located in Dallas, TX, 47,500 members; The Metallurgical Society, located in Warrendale, PA, 10,000 members; and Iron and Steel Society, located in Warrendale, PA, 6,500 members. Each of the four groups has grown and continues to serve the specific and/or diverse needs of its membership. As the needs and requirements of their industries and professions change, each of the Societies has perceived and initiated programs that serve their constituency rather than AIME as a whole. Therefore, each Society has recognized an increasing need for autonomy to better augment their own programs. An AIME Ad Hoc Transition Committee, with Robert Merrill, AIME Past President, as chairman, made a number of recommendations pertaining to AIME operations that were approved in October 1982 by the AIME Board of Directors. One of the recommendations was to endorse separate incorporation of the Constituent Societies on an individual-society-option basis. The AIME Board commissioned a task force of Constituent Society representatives to develop specific revisions to the AIME Certificate of Incorporation and the AIME Constitution and Bylaws. This was done to allow separate incorporation and to reflect the decentralized structure of the Institute. The SME-AIME Board of Directors subsequently approved the recommendation of SME Working Party #69 that SME pursue separate incorporation. Meanwhile, Working Party #69 continues to work with the other Constituent Societies and with the AIME Task Force on Reorganization to determine the form and substance of the separate incorporation. Why Incorporate? George Webster in The Law of Associations quoted Chief Justice Marshall's (1819) definition of corporation as: "A corporation is an artificial being, invisible, intangible, and existing only in contemplation of law. Being the mere creature of law, it possesses only those properties which the charter of its creation confers upon it, either expressly or as incidental to its very existence. These are such as are supposed best calculated to effect the object for which it was created." SME-AIME attorneys, Davis, Graham & Stubbs, have pointed out that the status of an organization operating as an unincorporated association is always unclear. At present, SME-AIME administers assets of almost $3.5 million (mainly property and inventory) but technical ownership and ability to enter into contractual relationships resides with AIME. However, the operation appears to outsiders (particularly those with whom SME-AIME does business) to be an independent operation which would be expected to be a legal entity in its own right. Advantages of Incorporation Liability. Because of legal ownership by AIME of all assets of the Constituent Societies, those assets are subject to the claims of any of the creditors of AIME or any of its constituent parts (i.e., the other societies). Liabilities can be those usually encountered in business but also encompass special risks, which could develop if there were a careless and erroneous publication of material that might be used in practice or if standards are improperly established. Those of us who have directed our efforts toward the construction of tunnels have long maintained that tunnel construction is more closely an art than it is a science. We have spent time underground with hard-bitten, tobacco chewing shift bosses and superintendents who have made seat-of-the-pants decisions at the face which have been based upon their long experience underground coupled with uncanny intuition. The courage and skill of these men in the performance of their art is legendary. Without question, they have constituted the backbone of the tunnel construction industry. But just as John Henry, the steel driving man, despite his stout heart and dedication to his task, was supplanted by the steam drill, I fear that our tunnel stiff, at least as we have known him, will become an endangered if not extinct species. The reason for this is clearly that tunnel construction is slowly but inexorably making the transition from being an art into being a science, and more and more its performance is requiring the services of scientists as opposed to artists. The tunneling art has been undergoing change for many years, and yet until recently the changes have not been basic. We have improved the way we do the same old things. For example, John Henry would be flabbergasted if he saw the rock drills we use today. He would not have engaged in the legendary drilling contest with one of our modern drills, He would have simply conceded defeat.

Nevada Goldfields' Aurora Mine consists of a 270 mtpd (300 tpd) precious metals mining and milling facility located 28 miles southwest of Hawthorne, Mineral County, Nevada and lies within five kilometers of the Nevada-California border. (Figure 1) Ore production presently is derived 85% from an open pit source with the balance from underground. The Aurora Mill is a compact conventional cyanide plant utilizing a carbon-in-leach extraction process followed by stripping of loaded carbon and electrowinning at Nevada Goldfields Kingston Mine, located near Austin, Nevada. Production commenced in December 1987 and annual gold production is currently 20,000 troy ounces of gold and 22,000 troy ounces of silver per annum, produced at an average cash cost of $178 per ounce of gold. Tailings handling at, Aurora was originally accomplished using a belt filter press producing a solid cake that was then transported to a final storage area. Although overall operating costs at the mine were' in the lower percentile of producing gold mines, the tailings handling portion of the operating costs were inordinately high.

Volatility is a fact of life in the mining industry. Prices of and demand for mineral products are among the most volatile of those for any product. The volatility of these markets wreaks havoc on both corporate management and the personal lives of mining people. Yet, until recently, it has been difficult to assess the impact of volatility on business strategy. This paper discusses how mining firms can profit from market volatility through an operations strategy that stresses operating flexibility. The foundation for our strategy analysis is the observation that a mine is analogous to a stock option. Techniques based on those developed to value stock options have recently been extended to the field of mine valuation. The insights provided by option pricing are very valuable in the development of mine operating strategy.

Capital resource budgeting is the way managers of publicly held companies fulfill their fiduciary responsibility to maximize the wealth of stockholders. Managers maximize shareholder wealth by allocating investment capital to the most productive of competing alternative projects. Managers do this in a manner that maximizes the net present value of the firm's future cash flow. The techniques of cash flow analysis are the primary tools available for selecting a corporate portfolio of projects that meets or exceeds the rate of return expected by shareholders. The reliability of cash flow analysis hinges on the ability of managers to forecast the future values of individual components of cash flow. The accuracy and reliabil¬ity of forecasting determine the soundness of capital investment decisions and, ultimately, determine the value of the firm.

Since the 1975 International Mine Ventilation Congress in Johannesburg there has been a trend in South Africa towards making the mine ventilation departments responsible for monitoring the total environment. This includes the taking of noise and illumination measurements and there is in fact a debate taking place as to whether the departmental title should be changed to 'Environmental Control Department'. The organisers of the 2nd international Mine Ventilation Congress have decided that noise and illumination will not be included as Congress subjects and 'Total Environment' includes only those facets which are open to debate at the Congress. The choice of mine is significant in that while most Congress papers from South Africa will be devoted either to coal mining or to the somewhat unique deep level gold mines, Prieska Copper Mine is a mine which can easily be identified with similar mines in many other parts of the world. The mine is situated some 750 km south west of Johannesburg and about 600 km north east of Cape Town. Current production (ore and waste) is about 340 000 tons per month and the total underground labour force is just over 2 000. The ore body is a massive sulphide, the main minerals being copper and zinc and the method of mining is sub-level open stoping. Daily average surface temperature conditions range from 85°F (29.5°C) dry bulb and 69.8°F (21°C) wet bulb in mid-summer to 42°F (5.5°C) dry bulb and 36.5°F (2.5°C) wet bulb in mid winter. The information presented in-this paper is limited to what can be gathered by mine ventilation staff as part of an on-going exercise and is obviously not as comprehensive as would be the case if a fully equipped research establishment were to become involved. The paper will be divided into three sections 1) Gases 2) Dust 3) Heat In each section statutory and/or other standards will be set down followed by a discussion of assessment and in some cases control methods.

The Tilden Mine is an iron ore mining, processing and pelletizing facility located on the Marquette Iron Range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It has a designed capacity to produce 8 million long tons of pellets annually from 21 million long tons of crude. It is a partnership owned by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, Algoma Steel Corporation, LTV Steel Corporation, the Steel Company of Canada, Wheeling Pitts- burgh Steel Corporation and the Sharon Steel Corporation. Cleveland- Cliffs manages and operates the Tilden. The crude ore averages 35% iron and is primarily non-magnetic iron oxide and silica. The major ore mineral is martite. Hematite, earthy hematite, goethite and magnetite are also present. The principal gangue mineral is chert. The ore grains are mostly in the 10 to 25 micron size range which necessitates very fine grinding for liberation. The concentrating process is the most complex one used in the iron ore industry. The unique technology for Tilden was developed in the mid and late 60's. The design and construction occurred in the early 70's and operation of the first phase which was of 4 MLTPY capacity began in October. 1974. Expansion of the facility to the current 8 MLTPY capacity was completed in 1979. Chemicals are the key to the beneficiation process at the Tilden Mine. The flowsheet utilizes selective flocculation - desliming, cationic silica flotation and concentrate dewatering by thickening and filtering. Nine different process chemcals are used. The control of the reagent feed systems is highly auto- mated. The entire concentrator is operated from a central control room. The concentrator flow diagram is presented in figure 1. The plant consists of 12 primary autogenous grinding lines, a common crushing circuit to handle an intermediate product within the primary grinding section, 24 pebble mill lines with cyclones and deslime thickeners, 12 flotation lines, 4 concentrate thickeners and slurry tanks, 8 lines of filters with six machines per line, and 2 tailings thickeners. A pumping system was installed in 1980 to permit the direct return of tailings thickener overflow water back to the reuse water pumphouse.

Mine operations are being squeezed to do more with less. This is not new. But, where do mine operators turn for the next stage of improvement? Many have waged strong wars on the cost reduction front and cut back staff to the bone, yet need more improvement to remain competitive. This paper will outline an approach which a few leading operators have taken. Following the footsteps of manufacturing's view of supply chain management and basic quality management they are reaping the benefits of taking a more holistic process view of their operation. This paper presents summaries of three companies' approaches and the impact which is being felt on the bottom line.
