On the 2nd of June 2007 SELI S.p.A. started the excavation of Beles Tailrace Tunnel (Ethiopia). The new 8,07 m diameter DS Universal TBM utilized for the tunnel excavation was manufactured by SELI S.p.A. and allowed the installation of 30 cm thick concrete lining, contemporaneously with the excavation of 7,200 m of tunnel. The greatest part of the tunnel alignment was excavated in hard and sound basal-tic rocks. The paper describes the main steps of the tunnelling operations which led to a remarkably rapid excavation, with a peak production of 36 m / day and a final break-through achieved 46 days ahead of the contractual deadline. Furthermore the paper describes the work and logistic organization that was set up to efficiently perform the mechanized excavation in the very remote area of the project.

Mining lignite in the Gulf Coast often requires some interaction with shallow ground water system. Suggestions for determining ground water data and analysis requirements for regulatory compliance are given. Simple methods for estimating mine inflow seepage, ground water level declines, and changes in ground water chemistry, which may result from mining, are discussed. The mining of lignite often results in interaction with shallow ground water systems. An evaluation of the interaction is required as input to mine permitting and engineering. Your evaluation will proceed more smoothly and produce more meaningful results with some planning prior to performing your evaluation. The following are tips to consider in planning and carrying out a successful study.

The prime criteria in the design of underground openings with complicated geological structures is ground control. Stability of underground openings for deep mines is critical because incorrect orientation or geometry of shaft, stope, and accessways often results in the failure of openings due to high stress conditions. Current design procedures for complicated orientation and geometry of mines are rapidly becoming inadequate as mines are being developed. In this study, finite element method has been used with optimization criteria to design more stable and safe underground openings.

The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.

The dressing of Bolivian tin ores has been done up to the present by classical. gravity methods, taking advantage of the high specific gravity of cassiterite compared with that of the accompanying gangue. For this purpose, jigs and shaking tables are used in the treatment of the various size fractions in which the ore is classified. Bolivian ores are mainly of the vein type and, to obtain a reasonable separation, crushing and several stages of grinding are necessary during the process to substantially liberate the cassiterite from the gangue. Gravity processes for cassiterite are effective for sizes down to 200 mesh. Below this size the efficiency of the gravity methods falls off very rapidly with increasing fineness of the mineral grains. The conventional treatment for this material is desliming followed by tabling on shaking tables various other types of machines have been designed for the gravity treatment of these fine particles but they have had limited success. Bolivian ores contain an appreciable amount of minus 200 mesh material constituted by "primary fines" caning from the mine itself, and "secondary fines" originated during the crushing and grinding necessary for liberation of the difficulty in the treatment of these fine particles is one of the causes why the recovery of tin in concentrates is only of around 50% in the mines owned by Corporacidn Minera de Bolivia, the State owned enterprise. Dravo Corporation was founded in 1891 and has long been recognized as a major domestic engineering and construction firm headquartered in Pittsburgh. In 1977, Dravo had revenue of $852.2 million with international business activities contributing $248 million; quite a different picture than envisioned at the turn of the century. Engineering and construction activities still dominate Dravo's most recent history and will do so for the immediate future. However, fluctuations in capital spending by large industrial sectors of our economy during the late sixties were affecting Dravo's planning for continued growth along its traditional lines of business. Diversification was a possible solution to smooth out the upward trend in corporate earnings. One large result of these continuing efforts was the formation of Dravo Lime Company, a vertically integrated, proprietary chemical supplier for the air pollution control market. Briefly retracing the seventies, the passage of the Federal "Clean Air Act" in 1970 supplied the impetus for Dravo Lime Company. This law promulgated limits on the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from large stationary sources that would affect local air quality. The major industry that felt the brunt of this regulation was the electric utility industry, especially those generating electricity with coal-fired boilers. The law hastened the development of a new industry, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), and is composed of three major segments: (1) the electric utility, (2) the FGD equipment suppliers (the scrubbing modules), and (3) the scrubbing chemical suppliers. Dravo's experience suggested the equipment end of the business but market analysis indicated that our long range corporate goals could be better attained by investigating the chemical processes involved in the removal of the SO, gas. The result being Dravo Lime Company. This paper will briefly describe the Thiosorbic lime scrubbing process and review our innovative mine and calcining facility.

From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. Deep sewer tunnels are required to meet future growth demands of the City of Austin?s down-town redevelopment. The tunnel is 18,000 ft long and varies in finished diameter from 54 inches to 96 inches. The tunnel crosses under Austin?s Town Lake three times and there are four main work shaft sites. Geology, groundwater, foundations, downtown redevelopment, and an active, healthy community put significant constraints on the design. This paper discusses a major underground project for downtown Austin and discusses the risk considerations and the opportunities the design team took toward optimizing the project design for the construction phase.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the thermal environment and determine the contributing heat sources within the existing 153 Orebody of Coleman/McCreedy East Mine which would then enable the prediction of the climatic conditions in the mine?s future 170 Orebody. The study entailed continuously monitoring, for a 2-week period, the dry-bulb temperature, humidity and barometric pressure along the existing intake airways from surface down to the 4810 Level and throughout an active mining area on that level. Furthermore, the mining activities and associated equipment that could be responsible for any changes in the temperature and humidity conditions within this mining area were also monitored. These data were then used to develop and validate a climatic simulation of the mine?s mechanized cut and fill mining method. This climatic model was then transposed to the future 5700 Level in the deeper 170 Orebody, to determine the environmental conditions within its production workings and along the main haulage route ascending from that area. Based upon the simulations performed it was shown that the level of ventilation planned for the new orebody should be able to maintain adequate environmental conditions. However, this study did emphasize the importance of the appropriate distribution of airflow in workplaces that used auxiliary ventilation in order to sustain a suitable thermal environment.

The Alcan Smelter project at Lynemouth on the Northumbrian coast draws cooling water for the power station through shafts and tunnels from the North Sea. The sea at this part of the coast is frequently very rough and even in calm weather the coastal currents are strong. The adjacent coal mine makes use of these currents to disperse colliery waste and discharges into the sea some thirty thousand tons each week. In consequence the sea bed is continuously shifting and the sea is black and turbid. Construction of sea shafts under these conditions presents difficulties as drilling from a floating vessel is hazardous and sea bed activity of divers is greatly hindered by the entire absence of visibility. After considering several alternatives a method of construction was agreed with the Consultants in which the drilling and also the lining of the shaft would be completed in sequence from an eight legged work barge (GEM 126). Each shaft would be drilled to full depth and a steel cylinder, with its ends closed temporarily, would be lowered into the hole and grouted into the formation to form a full-length permanent lining. The bell mouth for each shaft would be constructed in advance to form part of the cylindrical casing. On interception of the shaft by its appropriate tunnel the lower end of the cylindrical casing would be cut away and the internal walling of the shaft installed from below. After completion of construction the shafts and tunnels would be flooded and the bell mouth sealing covers removed by divers.

Estimating the residual metal inventory of large heap leaching operations is desirable for many reasons. Several methods have been tried with limited success. Drilling data from the Valley Leach Facility at AngloGold Ashanti's Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine has been used to develop a robust inventory estimation technique. The technique is presented along with discussion of the particular inventory components and evaluation methodologies.

The oil and gas drilling industry is the largest user of "functional" industrial minerals for well drilling and completion. (Functional industrial minerals can be defined as those used for performance characteristics rather than composition.) This industry's use of industrial minerals involves complex mining, processing, and distribution of products. The cost of these products at the well site reflects the complexity of distribution to typically remote locations and the cost of service. Table 1 illustrates the use of functional industrial minerals by the drilling industry. The total tonnage shown is almost 2 1/2 times larger than the 3.3 Mt (3.6 million st) of kaolin used by the paper industry for filling and coating, another major use for functional industrial minerals. Drilling fluids are an indispensible part of a drilling operation. These fluids perform several functions simultaneously. They cool and lubricate the drill bit, remove formation cuttings, increase the specific gravity of the fluid to counteract formation fluid pressures, provide a filter cake on the wall of the drill hole to prevent drilling fluid loss to the formation, protect the porosity of producing zones, and prevent reaction of the formation or formation fluids with the drilling mud. When porosity of a formation exceeds the ability of the drilling fluid to form a wall cake, it is referred to as lost circulation. Because these fluids are being constantly formulated for changing formation conditions, they require a skilled technician or drilling mud engineer on the site at all times. Drilling fluids are composed of oil or water as the liquid phase, and industrial mineral products and chemicals to control chemical and physical properties. The basic function of viscosity and suspension result from the use of gelling clays and chemical and mineral dispersants; specific gravity of the mud is adjusted with mineral weighting agents; filtration control is maintained by clays and various natural and synthetic polymers; platey minerals and scrap products are used for controlling lost circulation in porous or fractured zones; salts are added to the mud to inhibit shale and clay swelling; chemicals are added for pH adjustment, prevention of corrosion, and as scavengers for formation fluid components. Because of the clay component, drilling muds have rheological properties different from conventional fluids, behaving as Bingham plastic fluids as opposed to the Newtonian behavior of water and oil. Newtonian fluids will begin to flow with the application of any force, however small. Bingham plastic fluids require a finite force or shear stress (yield value) before flow begins. Thixotropy is another property of clay-based drilling fluids. At rest they form a gel structure that suspends the weighting agents and rock cuttings. These gels break down when a finite force is applied and circulation is restored. At the bit where shear rates are the greatest, the viscosity or resistance to flow decreases, so hydraulic pressures and pumping costs are minimized. A drilling rig provides a means of rotating a hollow pipe attached to a cutting bit. A mud pit or tank is used for mixing the drilling mud and its components. There is an increasing requirement for mines to meet a certain minimum criteria for sustainability within the context of the physical environment, ecosystem and socio-economic system in which they are located. The mining industry has wrestled to develop methods for assessing the ‘sustainability’ value of a mining project and indicators of ‘sustainability success’. A methodology for the evaluation of sustainability of a mining project using the Multiple Accounts Analysis (MAA) system was developed. The MAA is a platform for engagement of stakeholders and for the assessment of site-specific alternatives based on both qualitative and quantitative indicators of success.

Laboratory and pilot scale tests have been made to deter- mine the utility of heavy media separation, particularly a cone type separator, as a means of recovering aluminum from shredded municipal solid waste. The effect of the method of shredding on the behavior of aluminum in a heavy media system was deter- mined. Two-stage pilot scale heavy media separations were made with size fractions of shredded refuse. Recoveries of aluminum, as well as other components of the refuse, were measured and medium losses were determined. The experimental results indicate that with certain reservations a heavy media cone system can be utilized for aluminum separation and recovery from shredded and air classified municipal solid waste. Observations made using two-stage heavy media separation in a drum unit are included. Qualitatively, the results from the two types of separators are similar.

Ground falls represent a significant hazard at underground mines in the stone, sand and gravel (SSG) sector in the United States. Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting detailed investigations into the complex loading conditions at underground stone mines operating in challenging conditions. This paper presents the application of numerical modeling to analyze pillar and roof stability at a dipping underground limestone mine.

The Metals Mining Sector of the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI-MMS) addresses technical drainage-quality issues related to metal mining and related metallurgical operations, for future and active mines, as well as, for historical mines and mining districts. One of the first projects of ADTI-MMS is to develop a handbook describing the best sampling, monitoring, predicting, mitigating, and modeling of drainage from metal mines, pit lakes and related metallurgical facilities based upon current scientific and engineering practices. One of the important aspects of planning a new mine in today’s regulatory environment is the philosophy of designing a new or existing mine or expansion of operations for ultimate closure. The holistic philosophy taken in the ADTI-MMS handbook maintains that sampling and monitoring programs should be designed to take into account all aspects of the mine-life cycle. Data required for the closure of the operation are obtained throughout the mine-life cycle, from exploration through post-closure.

The nation is confronted with thousands of acres of abandoned coal lands. In Pennsylvania alone, these lands have been estimated to cost $15 billion to reclaim (Pennsylvania Bulletin, 1985). One way to deal with this problem is to provide a mechanism by which the active mining industry can undertake to remine certain of these abandoned mine areas. Remining is classified as reaffecting previously mined areas in order td extract the remaining coal reserves while improving the environmental quality of these lands through land restogation and abatement of pollutional discharges. However, there currently is a disincentive for operators to plan to extract reserves on these abandoned mine lands which have preexisting pollutional discharges. Therefore, they presently avoid them. This is because of the "potentially unlimited liability of post- mining treatment for any discharges that would remain after mining? (Pennsylvania Bulletin, 1985).

The following paper presents the results of geostatistical studies of the selected hard-coal deposits in Poland. Geostatistical methods were applied mainly to the characterization of variability structure of the coal seams thicknesses as well as sulphur and ash contents in the coals. Results imply that the accuracy of coal reserves estimations can be improved if kriging method is applied. Kriging allows predicting more precisely the values of such parameters as thickness and sulphuring content.

"AECOM completed a subsurface exploration program for an 18-foot diameter, approximately 4-mile long rock tunnel project in Hartford, CT. The tunnel crosses the regional geologic trend through the middle of a sedimentary basin, passing through four separate rock formations, including two volcanic flows. Faulting is prevalent, with at least 15 faults encountered during the site investigation. Severe artesian flows were also experienced in several of the borings, requiring highly specialized drilling equipment. Sixty-two borings and associated testing were performed to characterize the structural geology, hydrogeology, rock properties and ground conditions. A phased program was carefully planned and implemented with participation of geotechnical and geologic specialists, with thoughtful evaluation along the way to react to the ground conditions encountered, and make appropriate refinements. This paper will discuss the subsurface program details; the integrated efforts used to effectively characterize the ground; and will summarize the final characterization presented in the GBR. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The South Tunnel Conveyance and Storage Tunnel project is part of the Metropolitan District (MDC’s) Long Term Control Plan to address discharges to various water bodies throughout the greater Hartford area. This program includes a main conveyance and storage tunnel; a tunnel boring machine (TBM) launch shaft and retrieval shaft; adit tunnels with associated drop shafts and connection structures; consolidation conduits and manholes; and a tunnel pump station (TPS) at the downstream end of the main conveyance tunnel. AECOM is serving as prime designer for the MDC on this project. The main conveyance tunnel (hereinafter referred to as the “South Tunnel”) will be a deep rock tunnel with an invert depth of approximately 180 feet at its downstream end and approximately 218 feet at the TBM retrieval shaft. The tunnel will have a finished diameter of 18 feet. The tunnel will rise in grade at a slope of 0.1 percent to its upstream end. Total invert depth along the deep tunnel alignment ranges from about 180 ft. to as high as 320 feet. The total length of the tunnel will be 21,754 feet. The South Tunnel will be constructed using a shielded TBM and fully lined with pre-cast concrete segments."

Mechanical excavation methods can significantly improve excavation performance and labor safety compared to drill and blast operations. Herrenknecht has developed a mechanized shaft sinking method for soft and medium strength rock. This system combines innovative technologies which allow simultaneous excavation, removal of cut material and the installation of rock support. This Shaft Boring Roadheader ?SBR? is flexible in diameter and can be used in shafts with changing diameters and different shaft support requirements for depth up to 2,000 m. During regular excavation personnel are not required to access or work on the shaft bench. The boom used to cut the shaft profile is based on roadheader technology.
