Deep Well turbine pumps receive constantly increasing application to the problem of mining water and other fluids from great depths. Many installations of medium settings are presently operating successfully and it is felt that mach greater depths are immediately within reach. Settings and lifts in excess of 2000 feet: are not at all out of reason with present knowledge experience, and materiels; however, conditions of individual applications will govern in each case and dictate methods and possibilities to the designer. Design and operating problems of deep set -turbine pumps ire discussed together with a description of various types of equipment falling within this category. Although the deep well turbine pump has been produced In the vertical turbine pump industry for many years, the connotation of the word "deep" still remains questionable. Among the manufacturers of this type of machinery, answers to the question implying the practical limitation of setting for a deep well pump will vary to an extreme. Most pump designers are in accord that this type of equipment has not yet been exploited to its fullest degree; however, the subject is admittedly fraught with unsolved problems and un¬tried solutions so that such a discussion must necessarily derive from personal opinion and, belief., even though based on substantial experience and background. For this reason, it will be stipulated that the present writing will deal with what may be termed euphemistically ?a highly controversial subject.? During the nineteenth century, a paper was published under proper authority proving beyond question that the human body could not withstand speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour. As a limitation, this looks ' pretty ridiculous to us today. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was not a single machine in operation that could be described as mullti-stage deep well centrifugal pump. Excessive noise has long been a hazard in the coal-mining industry. Studies conducted during both the mid-1970s and the mid-1990s consistently show that hearing hearing loss within the mining industry persists, in spite of regulatory requirements and sampling technology advances. When MSHA’s new health standards to protect miners from hearing loss took effect in September 2000, the potential developed to re-evaluate sampling approaches with regard to noise-source hazards, such as task-based methods. This paper describes results from a Penn State research project currently being conducted at an underground coal mine. Each occupation was reviewed, and a list of tasks or processes performed by each was generated. Traditional personal noise dosimetry, static sound pressure levels, and equipment sound mappings have been performed. Job tasks indicating the greatest levels of daily noise exposure and contributions to noise dose have been identified and will be discussed.

There are 3 steps in the process of forming a mine ventilation system, (1) selecting a reasonable ventilation pattern (included pit shaft arrangement); (2) optimizing of the ventilation network and (3) computing and outputting the flow splitting results of the network with the optimal ventilating equipments selected. In the past, the first step was relied on artificial decision-making. In order to design a common ventilation system, some ventilation experts were needed to participate or do some examinations. Even so, the design made was reasonable only for those experts. If there is a mistake in the first step, then even the followed 2 steps are best done, the losses are very difficult to retrieve. So that, the first step is very important. The development of expert systems provided an efficient means and tool for all engineering fields. This paper presents an expert system of selecting mine ventilation pattern and pit shaft arrangement. After testing many times, it is shown that the system can perform the first step of designing a mine ventilation system, and can help the experts doing their study works more efficiently.

"The mining of tabular deposits accounts for a significant portion of modern production in both underground hard rock and especially, soft rock mining. There is a large discrepancy between the availability of tabular reserves and the amount of development of these deposits, particularly when the deposit has a dip of around 25-50 degrees. This project studied the technical and practical barriers to the mining of these deposits through modern and historical case studies. The primary technical barriers to the development of these deposits are material movement and roof support. The study of historical attempts overcome these barriers and why they failed allowed us to research the possibility of implementing modern technology on previously unsuccessful methods. By modifying some common mining methods, some of these deposits can be mined at only a marginal increase in cost and using readily available equipment. These modified mining methods could make previously underdeveloped deposits to become viable. INTRODUCTION Tabular deposits are defined as orebodies that extend at least hundreds of meters along two dimensions, and a substantially smaller amount along another [1]. Moderately bedded tabular deposits are mined less often than their more horizontal counterparts due to the technical issues they present. These issues often cause lower productivity, higher cost, and more frequent accidents. Moderate dip is a less well defined term; but in this case, it will refer to any deposit which has a dip of at least 20°. This paper will focus on deposits that dip around 25°-50° and are deep enough to require underground excavation methods. These deposits are too steep for most conventional methods yet not steep enough for gravity fed methods to work efficiently. In some cases, this dip range is also referred to as intermediate or steeply dipping. The types of deposits most likely to fall into this category are sedimentary bedded deposits such as coal, trona, evaporates, placers, and other alluvial deposits. Some other types of deposits can fall into this category as well. These include some of the metal reefs such as the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, which was deposited by lava flows, but is tabular. Some areas have dips that fall into the moderately inclined category. There are also some metamorphic deposits such as slate or marble that can have dips of more than 20°. The dip angle of these deposits can cause several challenges. Ore movement becomes more difficult as the exceeds the limits of conventional conveyors, rubber-tired, or tracked vehicles. At the same time the dip is below the angle of repose of the material. This prevents gravity assisted haulage, as the ore and waste will not run downhill by itself. Another common problem in moderately inclined underground mines is roof support. The dip angle can increase the risk of pillar and support failure. This is due to slippage between rock layers, non-perpendicular support of the vertical stresses, and slippage of standing supports. The inclination leads to stresses that are not usually found in typical horizontally bedded deposits. These stresses may require larger pillars that may reduce ore recovery below profitable levels."

The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents.

Powerful, easy to manipulate, ventilation modeling software is readily available to most mining engineers. Too often when preparing an initial ventilation model, engineers will go overboard in their design, creating a complex model with hundreds of branches. When, in practice, the creation of a less complicated ?to the point? model, containing a few well-constructed branches, would have delivered the same results. In this paper the author will demonstrate, by using actual feasibility report examples, that when designing a ventilation model, engineers should make more use of the K.I.S.S. (?Keep It Simple, Stupid?) Principle. As mining industry consultants we must continue to improve on, and deliver timely and cost-effective results to our customers.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the sensitivity of three selected input parameters in the operational control of continuous bottom-fed thickeners used for the treatment of coal refuse slurries. The three variable parameters were "Feed Flow Rate," "Feed pH," and "Feed Solids Concentration." These three input parameters were studied under three polymeric conditions which were cationic polymer, anionic polymer, and a combination of cationic-anionic polymer. For each polymeric condition, two mathematical models were developed: one for overflow response, the other for underflow response. The combination polymers produced the best desired quality of overflow and underflow. For this polymeric condition, changes in the feed solids concentration was the most sensitive factor in the maintenance of the overflow quality, and the feed pH was the most sensitive factor for the maintenance of the underflow quality. The mathematical models generated a set of plots which would allow an operator to control and/or adjust any of the three variables to achieve optimum conditions.

The tunneling construction industry faces a new challenge in endeavoring to comply with the multitude of regulations and standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and to work following accepted and experienced tunneling practices. Tunnel inspections appear to be gaining in priority. The national OSHA inspection activities reported for the year 1976 in the construction industry are as follows: 989 Inspections 45 As result of Accidents 186 As result of Complaints 605 General 153 Follow Up 34% Were found to be in compliance 714 Citations were Issued 1,825 Violations were found (201 of which were serious; 1573 were non-serious; 51 were imminent danger. There were no recorded failures to abate a violation in our industry.) The five general priorities by which a company would be scheduled for an inspection in descending order are: imminent danger situations, reports of fatal accidents or catastrophies, inspections in response to valid employee C( taints, inspections of work places covered by National Emphasis Program NEP, (OSHA's NEP has been designed to impact on any industry having a very high injury or illness rate) and finally random inspections of work places covered by OSHA. The following criteria in selecting companies for random inspections is used by OSHA.

Earlier work at Mintek on the development of gold-selective resins culminated in a plant-manufactured batch of the first generation of Minix resin. A subsequent pilot-plant campaign at a South African gold mine identified some problems with that resin. These included lower capacity and selectivity for gold compared with the laboratory prototype, and a slow but progressive loss in capacity as the resin was eluted and reloaded cyclically. These problems were overcome by chemical modification of the resin structure. Examples of these improvements are presented. The commercialization of a new resin for a new metallurgical application presents problems, which are exacerbated by the initial lack of demand for the resin because the process is unfamiliar to the mining industry. Progress in the commercial development of Minix is discussed in this context.

Our interest in metallurgical applications for activated carbon was thoroughly aroused when laboratory studies indicated that each dollars worth of carbon could retain as much as four dollars worth of tin. Since then other data was developed suggesting many Potential uses in the metallurgical field it is hoped that, the information presented in this paper may encourage studies by knowledgeable individuals in metallurgical operations. Activated Carbon accomplishes its results by adsorption which involves selective removal of materials from solution by holding the compounds on the carbon surface at the active areas. An example of adsorption is the dyeing of cloth where the dye is selectively held on the cloth surface and the concentration in the dye solution is thereby reduced. Many theories exist on, adsorption, but the predominant factors involved in metallic ion adsorption probably are that adsorption is indirectly proportional to solubility and is benefited by high concentrations acting to squeeze out molecules in smaller amounts.

INTRODUCTION Designers of major public works projects in the past have displayed varying degrees of environmental consciousness, and tunnel designers in particular have always had to deal with certain environmental considerations - ventilation, lighting, aesthetics - as matters of primary design. Today, however, with a widening sector of the public becoming environmentally aware, tunnels are treated as elements of whole transportation systems, and are subject to increasing environmental scrutiny. The Route H-3 tunnels in Hawaii are examples of the time, care, and detail involved in a major rock tunnel project. Project Description The Route. Interstate Route H-3 is a proposed 10-mile highway crossing the Koolau Mountain Range on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, providing a direct connection between the Pearl Harbor area and the windward part of the island in the vicinity of Kaneohe. It is designed as a dual highway with provision to accommodate mass transit. As shown on Figure 1, the project includes two sets of twin bore tunnels (through the Main Koolau Range and through Red Hill), three highway sections of which two are through largely undeveloped mountain valleys (South Halawa and Moanalua), a viaduct, and three interchanges. From the Halawa Interchange to the Kaneohe Interchange, the proposed highway consists of two 3-lane roadways separated by a median where the highway is at grade. One lane of each roadway will not be constructed initially but will be landscaped and reserved for mass

A recent study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) systemin a blowing face ventilation system, demonstrating its effectiveness and illustrating the CAC protection zones. This study evaluates the roof bolter machine CAC while operating in an exhausting face ventilation system. This study considers two similar locations to allow comparison with the previous blowing face ventilation (Zheng et al., Min Metal Explor 36(6):1115–1126, (2019)) study: (1) a roof bolter machine bolting the roof at 20 ft (6.1 m) from the face and (2) a roof bolting machine bolting at 4 ft (1.2 m) from the face. The environment introduces 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust to represent the roof boltingmachine operating downstreamof the continuous miner. However, the exhausting face ventilation uses an exhaust curtain with 9000 cfm (4.25 m3/s) of air. Two roof bolter machine working positions are simulated with the use of dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s) with dust reductions ranging from 39.5 to 82.8%. When the roof bolter machine operated close to the face, increasing CAC airflow was required for adequate protection since the dust reductions can be as low as 39.5%. Additional CAC airflows of 350 cfm(0.17 m3/s) and 450 cfm(0.21 m3/s) were evaluated and demonstrated that dust reductions increased to 59.7% (350 cfm) and 72.0% (450 cfm) for the worst location where the roof bolter operators located.

Mining geometrical graphic documentation is employed on a large scale in designing and planning of mining operations at all the stages of exploitation. Mining geometrical modelling of mineral grade distribution presents an independent type of mathematical (graphic) modelling. The idea of functional relationship between geological indices being observed, and spicier coordinates is the basis of traditional mining geometrical modelling. Graphic presentation of three independent variables P =f (x,y,z) is confined to obtaining the series of two independent variables functions. Independent variables are presented as topographic surfaces corresponding to plane cross-sections of a deposit. During exploitation of certain parts of a deposit the most reliable geological information is obtained, characterizing regularities of ore distribution in the entrails. This information is, though, not taken into account in goemetrization of the new areas. In this connection dynamic modelling of deposits in the process of exploitation is necessary, i.e. geometrization of the deposits should be dynamic.

How best to grind? This article compares conventional crushing and grinding circuits to semiautogenous circuits, reviews recent installations of each circuit, and describes seven methods of using autogenous or semiautogenous techniques. In addition, steel and power consumption data are reported and benefits of a dedicated digital computer are discussed. Size reduction is the most expensive operation in most mills. Crushing and grinding are usually the greatest part of capital costs. They often make up 60-70% of total mill operating costs. Picking the proper crushing and grinding method must, therefore, be done with great care, so the best circuit is chosen. In the past 10 years, there has been a strong trend toward using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding in mills throughout the world. Autogenous grinding is favored when the ore is quite competent and a fine grind is needed. Semiautogenous grinding is applied when fine crushing could cause severe problems or when ore varies in hardness or competency. The taconite iron ores of northern Minnesota fit the description for an autogenously ground ore and many are successfully ground that way. Most im¬pressive are the nine lines of 11 x 4.9 m (36 x 16 ft) mills powered by 9 MW (12,000 hp) motors at Hibbing Taconite. Porphyry copper and molybdenum ores fit the description for semiautogenous grinding. Recent installations include Highmont in British Columbia, Canada, and Quintana in New Mexico. Sampling Many mills have been built based on inadequate sampling data or insufficient tests. With the cost of many mills exceeding several hundred million dollars, it is mandatory that geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists work together to prepare representative testing samples. Simple, repeatable work index tests are usually sufficient for rod and ball mill tests. However, pilot plant tests on 50-100 t (55-110 tons) of ore are frequently necessary for autogenous or semiautogenous mills. Preparation and selection of the test sample is of utmost importance. Procedures for autogenous and semiautogenous mill pilot plant tests are relatively simple for those experienced in running them. Reliable and repeatable results can be obtained if simple, fundamental procedures are followed. The accompanying figure shows a typical conventional crushing-grinding circuit with three stages of crushing followed by ball mills or a rod mill-ball mill combination. This flowsheet is typical of many mills that have been built throughout the world. Also shown is a typical semiautogenous (SAG) circuit with feed coming directly from a primary crusher, and the semiautogenous mill product going to the separation process. Many similar semiautogenous circuits are built today because they are simple and flexible, lend themselves readily to high tonnages, and usually cost less to build and operate. With some ores, it is possible to send mine-run ore directly to the semiautogenous mill, eliminating the need for a primary crusher, as at Benquet's Dizon mill in the Philippines. An autogenous or semiautogenous circuit, as the name implies, uses the ore itself to assist in the grinding process. Generally, for this type of circuit, the ore must be competent so large ore chunks can be used to grind smaller ones. If ore alone is used, then the circuit is autogenous; but if balls are added to supplement the charge, then the circuit is termed semiautogenous. Ore competency is not always a criterion, to break up large pieces and wash away cementing material. Autogenous and semiautogenous mills have been very successful on relatively soft uranium ores where the values are frequently found in the material that cements together the sandstone grains. It is generally accepted, that oxygen is a necessary reagent for the flotation of galena with xanthate. Recent measurements have shown (1) that under plant conditions oxygen may be in a short supply to the extent that it limits the rate of flotation. Thus, it becomes important to define the exact role of oxygen and establish a model for the rational design and control of flotation separations, involving oxygen as a reagent. All theories or, the flotation of galena assign oxygen the role of an oxidant. However, they disagree on a number of questions: 1) Is the galena or the xanthate being oxidized? 2) Is a lead dixanthate or dixanthogen the actual collector? 3) Is the oxidation process in which oxygen participates of a chemical or an electrochemical nature? The last question arises from the observation (2) that an anodic bias as well as oxygen will make a galena surface hydrophobic in the presence of xanthate. Theories which are based an the premise that the influence of oxygen is of an electrochemical nature offer elegant models of galena flotation. However, full advantage has not been taken of available electrochemical techniques to discriminate between theories and this is the area towards which this research has been directed (3).

"Dare-Zereshk deposit is one of the deposits supplies ore for Taft copper Complex in Iran Yazd province. This deposit is situated underneath a village the same name. This paper discusses about sustainability factors in this area including: Social and environmental effects of mining, dislocation and substitution of communities, created and lost jobs, financial and economic factors, quality of life index, infrastructures and post-mining land use. Studies have been performed by coupling Geographical Information System (GIS) with decision support tools such as Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM), Through these studies revealed that considering the infrastructures developed for mine and plants, earned incomes and changing the community, mining activity in this area not only increases the social and regional sustainability but also improves it to a higher level."

This paper summarizes the results of the rock mechanics monitoring program performed as part of Old Ben Coal Company's longwall coal mining demonstration project conducted in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The work described herein included installation of instruments, collection of data and data analysis performed during mining of the first longwall panel in Mine No. 24. The rock mechanics monitoring program included both surface and underground instrumentation and was designed to achieve the following purposes: 1 -To provide the capability to observe unusual situations during mining so that remedial measures could be instituted quickly 2 -To formulate design guidelines for future longwall mining efforts; 3 -To evaluate surface subsidence, and its character, rate and potential effects on cultural features, and to develop criteria to assist in predicting subsidence for other mines having similar roof conditions. Six previous attempts with longwall methods in Old Ben Coal Company's Hine 21 had been unsuccessful due to roof control problems. A description of these attempts is given by Moroni (1973). All of the major raw materials (silica, soda ash, limestone, and feldspar) needed to manufacture most grades of glass are found in Wyoming. Additional advantages for the manufacture of glass include the state's geographic location, a well-developed transportation network, a favorable tax structure (no corporate or personal-income tax), and low energy costs. Inadequate local markets and prohibitive transportation costs to other markets have been the major obstacles to developing a glass industry in Wyoming, the least- populated state in the nation. The Rocky Mountain region only recently became a major market for glass, especially for the Colorado Front Range and Utah's Wasatch Front. Currently, changing costs of the production of glass, an increased market for con- tainer glass in the Colorado Front Range, and innovative production and transportation ideas (e.g., production of selected types of glass and bulk shipments of specification-glass pellets) favor developing a glass plant in Wyoming. Thus, the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) and other state agencies have been conducting studies and contacting investors in an effort to attract a glass-manufacturing plant to the state. Between 1987 and 1993, three locations of silica-sand and -rock deposits were studied in Wyoming (Cassa, Plumbago Creek, and John Blue). Funding was provided by the WSGS operating budget and local and state Department of Commerce economic- development grants. The reports on these areas were released between 1988 and 1993. In 1988-89, a California-based company conducted additional drilling and feasibility studies and prepared to construct a glass plant in Cheyenne, using the Cassa silica source. However, due to losses incurred by some of their other investments, the company did not proceed. In 1997, the Wyoming Science, Technology, and Energy Administration (STEA) contracted a market study for glass manufactured in Wyoming, using information provided by the WSGS. The STEA contacted several major glass producers, and a major glass-producing company began feasibility studies in January 1998, for the construction of a glass plant. In June 1998, bids to supply brown beer bottles to the Budweiser brewery northeast of Fort Collins, Colorado, were submitted by at least two companies that were considering glass-plant sites in Wyoming.

This study reports that routine mining activities could produce a high number of nanometer sized particles which have not been well characterized and may represent an unacknowledged exposure present in the mining environment. A preliminary survey of the particle emission from the feed-leg drilling activity was conducted in the excavations of an experimental mine. The level of particulate exposure was monitored by real time direct reading instruments include a NanoScan scanning mobility particle sizer (measurement range 10-420 nm) and an optical particle sizer (measurement range 0.3-10 μm). Particulate morphological and structural examination was conducted through transmission and scanning electron microscopy and x-ray dispersive analysis of samples collected by a thermophoretic sampler, and a novel nanoparticle sampler. The real time instrument data revealed high concentrations (> 3.5 x 106 particles/cm3) of ultrafine/nanoparticles generated from the drilling activity. Analysis of particle sampler specimens with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed a large amount of submicron silica, spherical primary particles and agglomerated soot particles rich in carbon. Exposure to particles in the nanometer size from various sources within the mining environment may be associated with the poorly understood rise in respiratory and systemic disease among miners. INTRODUCTION Exposures to mine dust have been measured and evaluated for decades. Exposures to aerosolized dust such as coal or silica particles can cause lung and other diseases (1-7). One way that The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) characterizes inhalation exposures within the mining environment is through measuring the respirable dust mass concentration within the breathing zone of workers (8). Respirable particulate matter (RPM) is of great concern due to its ability to deposit in the alveolar region of the lungs (9-10) where it can affect respiratory function. Interventions championed by MSHA have greatly reduced the prevalence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Although great progress has been made, the prevalence of CWP and PMF appears to be trending upwards and the measured increase in prevalence is not elucidated in RPM measurements (11-12). Though the presence and risk associated with ultrafine particles such as emission from diesel engine within the mining environment has been previously established (13-14). There is suspicion within the mining industry that this resurgence of lung disease may be due to very fine particulate matter from various source that is not properly characterized by current sampling methods. Nanometer sized particles, in the range of ultrafine particles, fall within the RPM size range and have been found to deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract (15). Nanoparticles are commonly accepted as particles that are greater than 1 nm in two or three dimensions but smaller than 100 nm (16). Once in the lungs, nanoparticles can enter the blood stream (17) and selectively affect other target organs such as the heart, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and brain (15,18-19). The size of nanoparticles has been shown to correlate with their translocation behavior on secondary target organs (20-21). There is strong evidence that the clearance mechanisms used to rid the lungs of particulate matter are not as effective on nanometer sized particles, leading to a greater fraction of never-cleared particles which may enhance disease development (20). Research has demonstrated that nanometer sized particles have unique properties (22) whose adverse health impact is greater than what has been found with micrometer sized particles of the same type (23-26). Coca Mines Inc. is a medium sized company exploring for and developing precious metal properties in the Western United States. They own interests in a number of properties which contain reserves of gold and silver. The Hog Heaven property presently is under development for a combination of open pit and underground mining, followed by recovery of the silver and gold by cyanidation.
