Development of cost effective technology for whole ore roasting of refractory gold ores is an important requirement to increase recovery rates as ore grades become more carbonaceous and sulfidic in nature. It is important that the industry focus on the further development of cost effective, environmentally sound technologies to roast this ore. Traditional technologies have centered around bubbling and circulating fluidized beds with and without oxygen enrichment. Fuller Company has developed a process to flash roast refractory ores in its pilot plant with the R&D results, commercial scale up issues, and indicative economics discussed herein.

Mineralogical analyses of carbonates in depyritized tailings and pyrite concentrate (from depyritization of the tailings) were completed as part of the tailings characterization for the Crandon Project, a massive sulfide deposit in northeastern Wisconsin. The mineralogical study was designed to determine the proportion of calcium and magnesium carbonates, and therefore the effective buffering capacity of carbonates in the tailings. The depyritized tailings are net acid consuming and will be stored in a surface tailings management area. The pyrite concentrate is net acid generating and will be used as backfill in the underground mine workings. The majority of carbonates in the depyritized tailings were ferroan dolomite containing 10 to 15% iron (by weight) and lesser amounts of siderite and magnesian siderite. The proportion of calcium and magnesium-rich carbonates corresponds to several independent tests of carbonate neutralization potential (CO3-NP) availability. The pyrite concentrate had less CO3-NP, indicating segregation of the carbonates during pyrite flotation. These carbonates reported higher iron contents, consistent with the relatively lower availability of CO3-NP in the pyrite concentrate.

INTRODUCTION In uranium miners, a causal relationship between exposure of the lung to high levels of alpha radiation and the consequential induction of bronchial carcinoma is now well-established (Wagoner, et al., 1965). Quantitation of this cause-effect association presents considerable difficulty, however, as the result of various confounding factors such as the contributing effects of smoking and/or arsenic exposure (Archer, Gillam, and Wagoner, 1976), normal metabolic variability and, perhaps most important of all, the absence of accurate radon/radon daughter exposure data. Estimates of cumulative lung exposures suffer from inaccuracy due to critical factors such as 1) unknown ventilation rates; 2) difficulties in obtaining representative mine air samples; 3) the variable character and magnitudes of the exposure sources; and 4) specific differences in metabolism and job histories that exist among miners. It was with considerable enthusiasm, therefore, that investigators readily embraced the idea of using skeletal burdens of the relatively longlived descendants of radon and its short-lived daughters, i.e., 210 Pb and 210Po (Archer, et al., 1968), to provide a measure of cumulative past exposure wherein the body acts as an integrating dosimeter. Early studies considered excretion rates of 210Pb and 210Po in urine, blood and hair (Sultzer and Hursh, 1954; Black, et al., 1968; Jaworowski, 1965; Bell and Gilliland, 1964) as well as their concentrations in bone samples, if and when they became available (Blanchard, Archer, and Saccomanno, 1969). These methods were ultimately complemented by in vivo, whole-body counting techniques using low background, NaI-Csl(T1) detectors (Eisenbud, et al., 1969). By this latter method, it would be possible to measure the skeletal burden of 210Pb directly, thereby avoiding the many difficulties associated with the relation between nuclide excretion rates and body burden. The rationale was simple; by knowing the skeletal burden of 210Pb it should be possible, by the judicious use of an applicable metabolic model, to estimate the cumulative lung exposure to alpha-emitting radon daughters (Fig. 1). Various models that were consequently constructed, however (Fisher, 1969), all suffered from the same limitation, i.e., the assumption that the source of 210 Pb in the skeleton and the source of lung exposure to the short-lived radon daughters were simply related and, if not, were at [ ] least not too variable (Raabe, 1970). By now, the difficulty with this assumption has been recognized and more sophisticated modeling techniques have been attempted which presumably present a more realistic picture of exposure conditions (Holtzman and Rundo, 1981). There is, nevertheless, the pessimistic view that due to the variety and variability (in time as well as in character) of sources that may exist for the origin of 210Pb in bone, it may [never] be possible to estimate past lung exposures accurately by an indirect, predictive model. For example, the origin of 210 Pb in the skeleton may include such sources as: 1) the decay of short-lived 222Rn daughters, inhaled and ingested; 2) the decay of 222Rn dissolved in body fluids and tissues; 3) directly from 210 Pb present in air, inhaled and ingested; and 4) 210Pb from non-occupational sources, e.g., food, water, smoking and endogenous 226Ra. The contribution of each of these sources may vary depending upon specific site conditions such as ventilation and mining operation. Electronic detonators have been in commercial use for a decade, with an excellent safety record. This paper lists known incidents involving electronic detonators. Typical standards required by regulatory bodies for static electricity and electromagnetic fields are reviewed. The performance of some detonators is compared to these standards; in general the minimum standards are easily exceeded. The general resistance of electronic detonators to extraneous electrical energy that can be derived from the body of test results is compared to danger levels for exposure of humans to these energies; it is shown that electronic detonators can safely tolerate higher electrical energies than people can. This comparison includes comparable data for electric detonators, which are shown to be more vulnerable to extraneous electrical energy than people are. Electronic detonators also bring significant safety benefits in blasting due to their testability, two-way communications, reliability, programmability and precision. The links between these attributes and enhanced safety are discussed with examples from actual blasting. Although electronic detonators are usually more vulnerable to extraneous electricity than non-electric initiation systems, the paper shows that the net safety benefit in handling and blasting is in favor of electronic detonators, which are the safest initiation system that has ever been offered to the mining industry.

Paper presents project results investigating current techniques for dragline wire rope removal and the development of less hazardous means of performing the task. The cannon is the most prevalent method used in American surface mines. A cannon test program was conducted that used 40-and 50-grain primer cord to establish force produced using a 56-pound projectile. Socketlwedges were separated to establish separation force data. Two alternative removal methods, pendulum ram and portable hydraulic pusher, were developed and tested. Both provide sufficient force to effect separations under normal conditions on draglines with up to 78- cubic yard buckets.

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

The Oakfield, New York Hine of the United States Gypsum Company is a shallow, room and pillar mine developed in the Camillus Formation of Silurian Age on the up-dip edge of the northern Appalachian Basin. The gypsum comes to subcrop beneath a variety of glacial materials and is subject to solution activity by groundwater. A geologic environment unfavorable to mining activity is thus created. Since 1978 seismic studies have been used to supplement core drilling to determine a conservative boundary between normal and questionable mining environments. A single channel seismograph, originally in use, is now replaced by a twelve-channel unit and is used to determine bulk material velocity which is the basis for defining the mining limit.

Sixty percent of the mines responding to the sixth annual Mining Cost Service labor survey reported increases in wages averaging 3.4% over the preceding 12 months. Only one mine reported a decrease in wages and this was accompanied by initiation of a substantial profit-sharing plan. Thirty-nine percent reported no change in wages. Thirty-seven percent reported using some form of incentive bonus plan. Mining Cost Service annually surveys coal, metal, and industrial mineral mines throughout the United States. Information about wages, benefits, and incentive bonus plans is part of an extensive data collection program to monitor cost areas of significance to the mining industry. This year, 131 mines responded to the survey. The data is collected by sending questionnaires to personnel managers at active mining operations. The information included in this article was taken from the returned forms, from labor contracts provided by some of the mines, and from followup telephone calls. This year's data was collected between November 1988 and February 1989.

According to the world bank1, the mining industry consumes up to 11 percent of global energy use. In comparison, 70 percent of mining projects from the six largest mining companies operate in water-stressed regions. To steer the direction of the process industries toward more sustainable practices, more than 40 governments have adopted a price on carbon. This measure includes additional taxes on the use of fossil fuels, trade programs, new standards for renewable energy, energy efficiency mandates, more stringent emissions regulation, carbon offsets, etc. This emphasis is also supported by investors shifting their priorities to reduce risk by focusing on long-term plans, including environmentally friendly operations. The metals and mining industry is at the core of the green energy mix and electrification of vehicles. This new trend creates an astronomical increase in demand for minerals. Under a 2-degree scenario, according to the latest analysis from the world bank, as new energy technologies continue to grow, it is expected that all minerals to double in demand, and the distribution of these materials will depend on their application. • Solar panels, will account for 87% of the aluminum demand, and more than 95% of silver • Wind turbines and geothermal plants will require 98% zinc and 64% titanium. • Solar and wind energy alone will demand more than 74% of the global supply of copper, and this is without considering wiring or other infrastructure to connect the grid • Battery storage accounts for 100% of the graphite and lithium demand. (Hund, 2020) • Other materials, such as nickel and steel, are also projected to more than double in demand as they are cross-technology minerals. These materials require a manufacturing process that is accountable for the emissions proper of the transformation process. It requires that these processes move from a hindsight mode focused on reporting to a forecasting mode based on run-time measurement of GHG emissions. This is a critical first step in companies realizing an economic return for doing the right thing for the environment and their communities.

High titania slag is produced from the smelting of ilmenite. These slags contain approximately 85 per cent TiO2 and consist mainly of a M3O5 solid-solution phase. During cooling the slag can decrepitate to a fine particulate material, which decreases the value of the product. Based on X-ray diffraction analyses of the decrepitated slag after cooling, it was found that the M3O5 phase had almost disappeared. The disappearance of the M3O5 phase was linked to oxidation of the slag. A M6O11 phase formed in the decrepitated slag. It is postulated that decrepitation of high titania slag is caused by volume changes due to the oxidation of the M3O5 phase in the slag.

Economic geologists faced with the task of evaluating phosphate rock deposits find it necessary to deal with a unique and a lengthy list of geologic, chemical, and economic factors before they can determine whether the deposit does, or does not, constitute "ore". The underlying fact is that phosphate rock concentrate sells at a price per ton that is among the lowest for all mineral commodities. A recent going price for a standard grade (i.e. 72% BPL) phosphate rock concentrate F.O.B. Tampa is $6.00 per long ton. This compares with sand and gravel's price of about $5.00 and $8.00, respectively, per ton. In the case of many, if not the great majority of mineral deposits, the evaluating geologist needs to concern himself principally with the fundamental and classic considerations of tonnage and grade. Barring some very unusual metallurgical problem any geologist that finds say 50 million tons of 1% copper rock, or substantial tonnages of 0.7% U308 sandstone, pretty well knows he has an ore body! Certainly the evaluation of phosphate rock starts with tonnage and grade. Any rock with less than about 10% P205 in the ground is generally ruled out as ore, on the basis of grade alone. Since nearly all phosphate rock operations must be of the large-tonnage, low-unit-value type, the tonnage of new reserves, to be considered as "ore", ought to be in the 100-million + class. The main problem in geochemical exploration for gold ore bodies in the 40 km2 hydrothermally altered area at Goldfield is to decide which of the many silicified ledges exposed are most likely to yield deposits with additional subsurface exploration. We conclude that the most efficient way to search for exploration targets is to collect rock samples from the ledges and analyze for the following elements in decreasing order of priority: gold, lead and silver, bismuth, and mercury. These elements form relict hypogene aureoles restricted to the ledges and are not appreciably redistributed during supergene leaching.

Through a unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT) Center, a video packed, dazzling CD-ROM training program was developed for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Why this product was developed, and why the aggregate industry, will be discussed along with the challenges faced throughout the project. Cooperation from every one involved including MSHA made this the product of which all other training materials in the mining industry will be measured against in the 21st Century. This product's versatility and wide application makes it a tool that is as critical to a mine's success as any earth moving machine. Developed with both state and federal grant moneys allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

Many remnants of gold exploitation in the Middle Ages were found in the Lower Silesia region. The oldest evidence of such activity was found in the neighborhood of Zloty Stok and comes from the 7th century. Mining of precious and non-precious metal ores has a great relevance in the late Middle Ages when advanced metallurgic technologies were mastered, that allowed to obtain gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc and arsenic from complex ores occurring in the oldest middle part of Sudetes. Historically it concerned the area of the Swidnica Principality and Klodzko County. Experience obtained in Freiberg, which is located close to the Lower Silesia, was used in the development of mining. A high level of mining and metallurgic technology was obtained in the 15th century that caused significant increase of production of the metals mentioned above. Unfortunately, the good time of Lower Silesian mining lasted only up to the 18th century; the notion of preservation of cultural heritage was unknown at that time. The Lower Silesian medieval mines were not in such a fortunate situation as the ?Wieliczka? and ?Bochnia? mines, which are operating to present-day, and which made preservation of the most interesting headings and objects possible. All these objects are now available for visitors. However, in the case of the middle Sudetes it seems that it is often sufficient to localize old shafts and headings on the basis of careful observations and old maps and carry out some earthwork to uncover medieval headings and objects of underground mining activity. They are often preserved in amazingly good state; this also pertains to mining devices. Another issue is of course the permanent preservation of that heritage and its possible availability for re-searchers and tourists. Some success has been achieved in that field (Zloty Stok Gold Mine is a good example), but also problems were encountered in many cases. The Lower Silesian Coal Basin, which has not been exploited for 10 years is an evidence that there is not a holistic conception of mining heritage renovation. Many attractive mining objects disappeared irrecoverably from the mountainous landscape of the Middle Sudetes despite common consciousness of their significance for cultural development of Silesia and other regions.

Column experiments were performed to determine the ability of Madison aquifer material to adsorb arsenic and other constituents in a heavily mined watershed of the Black Hills in western South Dakota. The Madison aquifer is a karstic dolomite and limestone reservoir that is exposed on the flanks of the Black Hills. Streams that cross the Madison in the eastern Black Hills typically lose all their flow to the aquifer at sinkholes. In this work, Madison aquifer material was obtained for loading of six-inch diameter columns, which were backfilled with Madison aquifer water. Stream water then was allowed to displace the aquifer water during column testing in order to simulate mixing of the two waters at sinkholes and to determined adsorption of arsenic and other dissolved constituents. Initial results show that some adsorption of arsenic occurred when compared to more conservative tracers such as nitrate.

The Kettle River Joint Venture is 70 percent owned by Echo Bay Minerals Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Echo Bay Mines Limited, and 30 percent owned by Crown Resources. Initial announced ore reserves were 700,000 troy ounces of gold contained in three deposits located east and north of Republic, WA., U.S.A. Additional reserves are being proven. Processing of finely ground ore by preaeration-carbon in leach (CIL) circuit was selected followed by cyanide destruction by the INCO Air/SO2 process.

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production, but the thermal state of pellets in the drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of the drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results indicate there is a coupling effect in the drying section of a traveling grate. Gas with higher temperature in down-draught drying (DDD) transfers heat to the up-draught drying (UDD) through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changes before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD are displayed in UDD in advance. To verify the model, a contrast experiment was conducted.

Introduction There has been much publicity of the boom and bust in oil and gas well drilling in the US, and many comments on oil and gas gluts. Despite this, the drilling industry remains the largest consumer of functional industrial minerals. The boom years of 1981 and 1982, compared with the bust year of 1983, show a sharp reduction in the consumption of industrial minerals-1981, 7.4Mt (8.2 million st); 1982, 6.3 Mt (7 million st); and 1983, 4.4 Mt (4.9 million st). Industrial mineral use rebounded in 1984 to 4.7 Mt (5.2 million st). This was the second highest year in history in terms of wells drilled and third highest in footage drilled. Table 1 shows the history of drilling activity and mineral consumption from 1971 to 1984. The uses of functional industrial minerals in oil and gas well drilling were detailed by Miles and Blair (ME, 1983, October, pp. 1397-1400). As an update, this article addresses only the changes that have occurred in the industry in the past two-and-a-half years. It will be directed to mineral use and new products introduced to the industry. Drilling practices A partial explanation of where wells are being drilled with lower quantities of minerals consumed is: • In the boom year of 1981, there was a proliferation of number of suppliers chasing the same business. This resulted in multiple sourcing, multiple warehousing, and a huge increase in inventory that became surplus in the following years. The bust year, 1983, caused a severe shakeout in the number of suppliers of minerals and associated drilling fluids. • In 1981 and 1982, the wild speculation in the oil and gas industry led to drilling of speculative deep gas wells. Oil wells were drilled on a wildcat basis - in areas of unproven productivity. • Presently, the oil and gas well drilling industry is very active. But drilling is directed toward proven areas of production and working over old wells for increased production. This means a large number of wells are being drilled with lower average foot-

This paper describes the Boroo Gold Company (BGC) ore processing plant which is the first CIL/CIP plant in Mongolia. BGC is the first foreign investment in Mongolia since 1990 and follows the highest safety and environmental standards. Commissioning of the plant commenced in October 2003 and commercial production began in March 2004. Gold recovery is by gravity and conventional leaching and carbon adsorption. Detoxification of the leach tails is by the SO2/Air method before discharging the tails to the tailings pond. Ore types treated at Boroo are predominantly oxide with some transition ore as mining reaches the lower sulphide zone. There are several interesting technological issues and projects ongoing at Boroo which will also be discussed.
