Titanium was discovered in 1791 and, four years later, was named after the Titans of Greek mythology. Titanium metal was first made in 1910, but was not used commercially until the 1950s when it was nick-named The Wonder Metal of the Age. The first titanium dioxide (TiO2) white pigments were produced commercially in 1915; more than 90% of the titanium minerals produced in the world today are used in the manufacture of white pigments. The remaining 10% are used to manufacture titanium metal and other uses such as welding rod fluxes. Titanium mineral mining began in the United States between 1880 and 1900 in Chester County, Pennyslvania. Rutile from a deposit near Roseland, VA, was mined in 1901. The use for the rutile was limited to production of a few titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics. Larger scale mining for ilmenite, rutile, and zircon began in Florida to provide chemical materials for use in World War I in 1918. This mining ended in 1928. Large scale mining of titanium minerals in Australia began when Benick, Anderson, and Porter (later called Tamco) started mining the beach sands at Yamba in New South Wales in 1935. Ilmenite production from beach sands in the State of Kerala in southwestern India also began in the 1930s. The 1940s saw many changes in titanium mineral mining. Extensive deposits of ilmenite and ilmenite-bearing iron ores were discovered in eastern Quebec. The Pigments Department of E.I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co. lost their high grade Indian ilmenite supply after World War II began, and they were forced to use lower grade ilmenite from National Lead's (now NL Industries) Sanford Lake Deposit, near Tahawus, NY, in the Adirondack Mountains. At the end of the war, Du Pont undertook an intense search for a domestic ilmenite source. With the cooperation of the US Bureau of Mines, Du Pont geologists found a very large deposit east of Starke, FL, in 1946. In 1948 Du Pont entered into a contract with Humphreys Gold Corp., who operated a heavy minerals mine near Jacksonville, FL, to construct a plant and operate it for a period of ten years. The plant started up in 1949 and operated under Humphreys' management until the contract expired in 1958. Du Pont has operated the plant since that time. In 1956, a second plant was designed and built by Du Pont a few kilometers northeast of the town of Lawtey. The 1960s saw titanium mineral production expand in the southeastern US with Humphreys' contract mining Du Pont's ore body at Folkston, GA. In the early 1970s. American Cyanamid and Union Camp Paper Co. formed a joint venture company, Titanium Enterprises (TE), to mine and separate titanium minerals from Union Camp's ore deposit southwest of Green Cove Springs, FL. In 1975 the TE plant was shutdown and later sold to Associated Minerals (USA), Inc. (AMC), a subsidiary of Renison Goldfields Consolidated Ltd., an Australian company. It now operates under the name RGC (USA). Mineral production grew in the 1970s with the development of extensive heavy mineral deposits at Eneabba in Western Australia and Richards Bay in the Republic of South Africa. The 1980s saw the construction of a very large ilmenite mine and synthetic rutile processing plant in the state of Orissa southwest of Calcutta, India. At the same time, concern for titanium mineral shortages expected by the end of this century, gave rise to a flurry of exploration activity during the mid 1980s. As a result, large deposits were found in Virginia and North Carolina. New deposits were also discovered in Australia. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of world titanium deposits and mines. The world TiO, production capacities are given in Table 1.

M.S. Azun I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author's conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey's lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author's paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, I may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [ ] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [ ] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. T ve B, in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semi-variogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. Past research showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture. Rock dust must disperse with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion. Non-treated rock dust readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while anti-caking treated rock dusts can remain dry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health contracted the Central Mining Institute in Poland to conduct large-scale testing in their Experimental Mine Barbara to determine if a treated rock dust can be as effective as non-treated rock dust in attenuating or quenching coal dust explosions under the same experimental conditions. INTRODUCTION One of the goals of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to conduct research to reduce the risk of mine disasters and provide workplace solutions to reduce the risks associated with accumulations of combustible and explosible materials; the most common form of which is the generation of coal dust during the mining process and its subsequent distribution downwind. Dispersible rock dust is a primary defense for preventing coal dust explosion propagation in underground coal mines, and its properties are defined in 30 CFR 75.2. “Pulverized limestone, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, shale, adobe, or other inert material, preferably light colored, 100 percent of which will pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and 70 percent or more of which will pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch; the particles of which when wetted and dried will not cohere to form a cake which will not be dispersed into separate particles by a light blast of air; and which does not contain more than 5 percent combustible matter or more than a total of 4 percent free and combined silica (SiO2), or, where the Secretary finds that such silica concentrations are not available, which does not contain more than 5 percent of free and combined silica.” An earlier NIOSH investigation of rock dust revealed two significant concerns with the supply of rock dust to U.S. coal mines: 1) insufficient particles <200 mesh (75 μm) and 2) all rock dusts when wetted and dried formed cakes and were not easily dispersed with a light blast of air (1). Past research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture (2). Rock dust must also be dispersible in concert with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion (3, 4, 5, 6). Non-treated rock dust, however, readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while a rock dust treated with long-chain fatty acids (such as stearic acid) can remain dry and dispersible. Stearin-treated rock dust has been used in British coal mines (7) and is commonly used in Polish coal mines.

INTRODUCTION The problems involved with moving millions of tons of rock are being addressed by nationally recognized tunnel contractors who have converged in Chicago over the past 5 years. This wealth of expertise has been needed to meet the risk and challenge of constructing the world&apos;s largest network of underground tunnels which in turn has required a dramatic advance in the art and science of tunneling. These pioneers, through innovation, adaptation, and hard work, have eliminated the one major concern of The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago - how to move 8 million tons of rock. The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves 122 municipalities covering 866 square miles in Cook County, Illinois. Of these cities, towns, and villages, 53 have combined sewer systems. On an average of once every four days, these systems overflow about 4 million gallons of combined sewage and rainwater into the area&apos;s rivers and canals. The overflows occur at approximately 640 outfall locations of which 10% are owned by the MSDGC, with the remainder of the points belonging to various other municipal bodies. All those who own these "point" sources of pollution are in violation of Illinois State and Federal regulations. To enable its member municipalities to come into compliance with State and Federal law, the MSDGC is implementing its Tunnel And Reservoir Plan (TARP). TARP is a regional solution to the problem of combined sewer overflow in the metropolitan Chicago area. In June 1997, Mount Polley Mining Corp., a division of Imperial Metals Corp., completed an 18-kt/d (20,000 stpd) gold-copper mine in central British Columbia. Fast-track construction and extensive off-site construction were combined with an aggressive project schedule to build the mine in one year. This was three months ahead of schedule and 7% below the original budgeted cost of C$123.5 million (US$86 million). The Mount Polley Mine was the first of a crop of new open-pit mines in British Columbia. The Mount Polley deposit has been explored since the mid-1960s when it was known as the Cariboo Bell property. From 1988, Imperial Metals completed drilling and metallurgical testing on the deposit. This led to a positive feasibility study and the issuing of a Mine Development Certificate in 1991. The project was later shelved due to falling metals prices and the strength of the Canadian dollar. In late 1994, Imperial merged with Bethlehem Resources Corp., bringing a strong project team to the company. The deposit was then re-evaluated, ore reserves revised and additional metallurgical testing was performed. The result was a revised project plan. It indi¬cated that a financially feasible gold-copper mining op¬eration could be constructed at Mount Polley operat¬ing at 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). In May 1996, an agreement was reached with Sumitomo to jointly fund and develop the project. By early 1996, final plans and permits were being prepared for construction, scheduled to begin in June 1.996. On-site work commenced on May 28th, 1996 following lifting of the road restrictions. Mount Polley Mining acted as its own project manager. Construction was completed in June 1997. Plant runup took place in July and full production began in August. Through the use of off-site construction and the careful selection of contractors who cooperated to complete some 12 major contracts, it was possible to reduce the mine and mill construction time from 16 to 13 months. Off-site construction for all possible aspects of the work and the use of used milling equipment allowed significant savings in overall capital costs of construction. Total costs for the mine, mill and tailings dam equated to C$6,100/t/d of throughput. The mill design incorporates several innovative features that will aid maintenance and allow flexibility of operation. The operation is designed as a closed system and meets the latest environmental standards. Concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Vancouver. Revenues for the mine come from the mine&apos;s production of about 3.1 t/a (100,000 oz/year) of gold and 10.8 kt/a (24 million lbs/year) of copper during the first four years of the 12-year mine life.

A collaborative research project is undertaken by Anglo American Coal and CSIRO to develop appropriate strategies for gas and spontaneous combustion management of longer panels. Extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling studies have been conducted and calibrated using operational longwall goaf gas data to obtain a fundamental understanding of goaf gas flow patterns in longwall panels of 1.0-km and 3.0-km lengths and a detailed investigation of the effect of various mining and operational parameters on goaf gas flow patterns. The modelling studies have also been used to investigate the performance of various gas drainage and proactive inertisation strategies during various stages of longwall panel extraction. Simulation results indicated that apart from tailgate (TG) side goaf holes, gas drainage from maingate (MG) goaf holes and the mid panel start-up goaf holes would be useful for flat seam field conditions. Operation of 8–10 goaf holes is recommended for field site conditions with high goaf gas emissions of 6000 L/s. The modelling results indicated that the traditional inert gas flow rate of 500 L/s currently used in some mines would be insufficient to achieve effective goaf inertisation in long panels. Results indicate that 3.0- km-long panels would require 1500 L/s of inert gas and there is a need for multi-point inert gas injection strategy for effective goaf inertisation. In this paper, details and results of modelling investigations and recommended strategies for gas and spontaneous combustion management in 1.0-km- and 3.0-km-long panels are presented.

The remarks that follow are based substan¬tially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which have been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more-difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in intermediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1 ½ . The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present.

Zinc concentrates received in La Oroya zinc refinery are marmatitic in nature, contain about 11% iron and traces of other metal values, Figure 1 shows the zinc circuit. The calcine from the roasted concentrates is leached in spent zinc electrolyte. Major part of the impurities is iron which has been oxidized to its trivalent form, This is the origin of the zinc leach residue for which the ZILERET process was developed and so named. The impure liquor from the leach is sent for purification and thence to electrolysis- zinc deposits on aluminum cathodes from which: it is stripped, melted and cast into slabs Typical assays of zinc calcine and leach residue are given in Table 1. Metal values contained in the leach residue, without counting any value of iron, amount to roughly $130 per short ton.

A column flotation system was designed to conduct release analyses of a very finely disseminated, stratiform, copper ore from the Denali Copper Prospect, Alaska. Chalcopyrite is finely disseminated in a carbonate matrix and pyrite is disseminated in both the chalcopyrite and gangue, requiring grinding to 20 microns for adequate liberation. A 25 mm x 2.4 m glass flotation column was designed. The ore and its flotation tailings were repeatedly floated to obtain a rougher concentrate, which was repeatedly floated to produce release fractions. These were analyzed for copper, iron calcium and magnesium. Release curves were plotted. The procedure was replicated at each of two grinds; 99% and 88% passing 37 microns (400 mesh), and should find application for flotation characterization and process selection. Bond grindability work was also conducted.

The basic goal of this investigation was to determine the degree of drying of high moisture lignite through the use of high temperature and pressure steam autoclaves. Specific items studied were: a) the effect of lignite particle size, b) steam temperature and pressure required, and c) the time of ahydration. Although removal of sodium, ash, sulfur and other ash-forming minerals was not the goal of this study, basic analysis of effluent water showed organic material and alkalai metal content. Removal of inherent moisture from run-of-mine lignite was tested by lock-feeding the lignite, which was previously sized by screening into 25 kg autoclaves. High pressure, up to 4.053 MPa (588 psi), saturated steam was then introduced into the pressure reactor. Reaction time, pressure, temperature, and depressurization rates were strictly controlled for each reactor test run. Results indicate that about 80% of lignite total moisture was removed, including some of the inherent moisture, yielding a non-oxidized, and thus stable, lignite product. As stated, a side benefit occurred as some reduction of non-combustible portions of the lignite also took place. The conclusion reached as a result of the tests is that the steam-drying process can be successfully applied to reducing moisture in lignite, and may be considered for additional studies on acceleration of the coalification process. On the basis of the data presented, the author believes that lignite can be economically upgraded in steam autoclaves by simultaneously reducing the moisture content by 80 percent and the sulfur content by at least 50 percent. Upgrading the lignite by this method will result in large energy and financial savings.

Douglas W. Fuerstenau (DWF) grew up on a farm and in several small communities in rural South Dakota during the depression years, where he learned the value of hard work. Working hard can produce results but being clever and hardworking will give you a bright future. In his later school years, Fuerstenau’s family moved to Rapid City where his intellectual curiosity and capacity helped him graduate with a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1949. His technical interests led to graduate studies and completion of a master’s degree from the Montana School of Mines in 1950 and Sc.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1953.

Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillars is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to pre-failure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25 to 40 percent higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Pre-failure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to improved designs as mines become deeper.

Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

Weak demand for metals and consequent low metal prices resulted in continuation of the depressed state of US mineral exploration activity through 1983. Data collected by Resources for the Future Inc. and The Pennsylvania State University for a cooperative study on mineral exploration activity indicate that US exploration in 1983 fell by as much as 25% from 1982 levels. Precious metals remained the focus of most exploration efforts, as gold and silver prices remained attractive compared to base metals. Reports of 1983 domestic exploration and development activities in several industry journals indicates that about 85% to 90% of those projects were directed primarily at gold and silver. Gold exploration included work by several companies on Carlin- type disseminated gold deposits in Nevada, geological prospecting and drilling in the Wenatchee Gold Belt in Washington, and interest in lode and placer gold properties in California, especially by several small Canadian firms. Precious metals exploration projects were also reported in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, and Utah. There was also tome precious metal exploration activity in the eastern US. Development continued at the Ropes gold mine near Ishpeming, MI, and companies explored historic gold-producing areas in the Southeast. Some exploration for nonprecious metals took place last year. Stratabound copper-silver deposits were examined in western Montana, and US Borax continued exploring molybdenum resources in the Misty Fjords area in Alaska. Work on these projects during 1983 may have been stimulated by time limits on the availability of certain federal lands for exploration more than by projected improvements in metal markets. During 1983, several papers were published on mineral exploration strategies and the future of US exploration. David Watson of Raymond Kaiser Engineers, in a paper presented at the 1983 AMC Mining Convention, forecast increased exploration activity for gold and silver because of world economic conditions. He added that antimony, manganese, chromium, graphite, mercury, tantalum, tin, and barite are also likely targets based on their limited domestic reserve availability. He cited concern over reported subsidized mineral production by foreign producers and US regulatory and land-planning policies as retarding mineral exploration activity. Douglas Cook of Freeport Exploration Co., at the same meeting, presented a paper that showed that a 1950-75 period of vigorous exploration has been followed by a period where acquisition has replaced exploration as the predominant means of acquiring new mineral properties. At a December IIASA conference on "The Economics of Mineral Exploration," in Vienna, Austria, A. Rose and R. Eggert of The Pennsylvania State University pointed out that recent exploration decisions tend to rely more on evaluating production costs and comparing them with existing deposits, rather than on return of

The paper presents an analysis and discussion of the underground ventilation system at the waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), with particular emphasis on specific repository-related requirements and the gradual evolution of engineering designs relative to the WIPP Project scope. The underground facility has been constructed with three shafts. Additional studies, coupled with actual site-specific experience, have established? the need for construction of a fourth ventilation shaft to double the under-ground airflow. As a research pilot project, and the first of its type in combining mining and nuclear technologies, the WIPP Project is accumulating data and experience that may be fruitfully applied in the future designs of ventilation systems for planned commercial nuclear waste repositories.

The current processes that aim to purify molybdenite concentrates are not able to dissolve some copper compounds, hence limiting the processes. Typically, the copper content results are from 2 up to 4 weight percent in the last concentrate. Such values are still too high for the molybdenite concentrate to be further processed to molybdenum trioxide by roasting. In order to achieve lower levels of copper — but also avoid excessive molybdenite losses — a continuous sulfation-leaching process is investigated and applied successfully on a pilot scale. Additionally, a reactor prototype and its process parameters are proposed for a commercial plant.

Central to Newmont Gold&apos;s Mine planning system is the ability to interactively perform cut and fill operations on topographic contours and to accurately evaluate grades and tonnages within contour outlines using polygon set manipulation routines. This paper develops the applied geometry concepts that underlie these routines. Included are representation of volumes with contours, point in polygon test, block proportion in polygon calculation, polygon area and centroid calculation, and intersection, union, and complement between polygon sets.

A low-grade copper-nickel deposit, with an estimated size of 4.6 billion tonnes and with average analyses of 0.6% copper, 0.2% nickel, occurs in northeastern Minnesota. In addition to copper, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals, the Duluth gabbro contains magnetite, ilmenite, olivine, plagioclase and biotite. It is estimated that the flotation tailings that would be produced by a concentrator of optimal size to sustain a smelter would amount to 20 million t per year. The flotation tailings, having already been ground, warrant a closer examination for the recovery and utilization of potential by-products. The residual sulfide minerals and fibrous minerals may also be isolated and treated separately for useful purposes or for disposal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Two flowsheets were developed; one involving preconcentration by low- and high-intensity magnetic separation and another involving preconcentration by gravity concentration. The concentration methods for recovering and purifying individual by-product minerals were investigated. From their chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics, the potential areas of application and marketabilities of each product fraction were surveyed.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron-and steel making and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.
