In a mine operation, the proper strategy to handle residues is one of the main concerns, in particular when dealing with mine/plant liquid effluents. Most active water treatment systems at metal mines rely on standard alkali-addition procedures. However, the increase of mineral prices, stricter environmental standards and high metal content in some effluents, has led to the development of alternative treatment techniques for their removal and/or recovery. This article presents a roadmap to face mine wastewater treatment requirement, with focus on two active treatment strategies: 1) conventional lime-based technology and 2) the use of NaSH or Fe(OH)3 for metal precipitation and separation, including possible valuable elements recovery. The Roadmap consists of 1) Approach to effluent treatment 2) Characterization 3) Precipitation tests 4) Solid/liquid separation tests and 5) Economic analysis.

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. A classification of flotation processes carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions, e.g., seawater, is proposed using the most obvious features of these processes: low or high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, pulp ionic strength, and pH. The first distinguishable group is the processes carried out in NaCl/KCl solutions, about 0.5 M in the case of salt flotation of inherently hydrophobic minerals, and at concentrations about 10 times higher in the flotation of potash ores. In the flotation of sulfide ores, such as nickel or copper ores, with xanthate-like collectors, the xanthate collector is apparently not affected by pulp ionic strength and only adjustment of frother may be required. Content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in seawater is the main difference between such systems and fresh water. The presence of these metallic ions can adversely affect flotation in the pH ranges over which these ions hydrolyse. The successful flotation of Cu-Mo ores typically requires depression of pyrite at high pH values achieved with the use of lime. However, in seawater, flotation of Cu-Mo ores requires removal of the hydrolysis products of the Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions or the use of a pyrite depressant that can be effective over the pH ranges that are much below the pH of hydrolysis. Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions also affect flotation of phosphate ores with fatty acids. In this case, the depression mechanism is not caused by precipitating magnesium hydroxides on the mineral surface but by precipitation of collector insoluble salts, and the same ions are responsible for depression in both cases. In the seawater flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores and phosphate ores, the practical solution involves either removal of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions prior to the flotation or complexation with other reagents.

Lack of understanding the major process parameters and inadequate scale-up factors have led to the belief that fundamental knowledge is not important for successful flotation plant operations. Flotation of simple and easy to process ores may not require a strong fundamental knowledge base for day to day operations. However, as low grade complex ores are mined and process control is integrated into flotation schemes, it is imperative for a plant operator to acquire a strong background in the basics of the flotation process at hand and/or have access to such a knowledge base at short notice. In order to meet the challenges of unexpected changes in the feed, reagent quality, water chemistry, physical, mechanical and hydrodynamic conditions, the flotation plant superintendent/chief metallurgist must have a strong background in the flotation fundamentals.

Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind-backfilling process has been particularly successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. Using this newer technology, vast quantities of backfill material can be distributed over wide areas in underground openings from a small number of injection boreholes. The rapid and successful development of this backfilling method, however, has outstripped technology for monitoring and controlling backfill placement. Surface or borehole remote sensing methods are needed to determine where fill material is being distributed underground and how effectively the material is packed in the voids. In search for improvements in backfill monitoring and control technology, potential remote geophysical sensing, process monitoring, and tracer methods were evaluated to select candidate systems for monitoring backfill placement under the constraints imposed by the injection process and the surface and subsurface conditions. ' A multiple objective ranking matrix, based on theoretical considerations as well as pragmatic experience with systems working in related or similar conditions, was used to narrow down potential methods to several most-favored candidates. Two of the candidates were field tested under actual operating conditions at a backfilling site in the Wilkes-Barre-Scranton region of northeastern Pennsylvania. Although process and acoustic emission monitoring indicated promise for improving existing backfill monitoring technology, more extensive testing under different conditions at various sites is required to establish the validity and utility of these methods. Results indicate that no single method is adequate in itself for backfill monitoring, and that a successful system will require the Integration of several methodologies.

One of the most important applications of material handling engineering technology occurs in iron ore pelletizing plants. Although the total installed value of material handling systems in such plants, as well as in many other modern process plants, is a relatively small percentage of the value of the plants (5 to 10% perhaps), their significance is considerable. Indeed this significance equals that of the more expensive process equipment in the plant, since the failure of any component of any system causes, shutdown of the entire plant. It is because of this increased consequence of failure that design criteria for process plants are more conservative than for conventional material handling applications. A second unique characteristic of material handling technology applied to process plants in general is the variety of materials being handled and the wide range of problems this variety presents. One extreme encountered is the stickiness of filter cake. Here the entire design effort is aimed at keeping the material flowing through transfer points and preventing it from building up on components. Another extreme is the conveying of fired pellets - hard spheres with a very flat angle of repose and abrasive characteristics severe enough to make conventional wear plate materials impractical.

Solvent extraction as a method of purifying and concentrating metal values from solution has become a standard hydrometallurgical operation for recovery of both uranium and vanadium, and within the past two years it has been put into operation in a commercial plant for recovery of copper from leach solutions. In this first full scale solvent extraction plant for recovery of copper operated by Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation near Miami, Arizona, a kerosene solution of an organic compound, LIX-64® is used to selectively extract the copper from the dilute acidic copper sulfate leach liquor obtained from heap leach operations. The copper is back extracted from the solvent into a stripping solution which is fed to an electrolysis circuit producing cathode copper for sale.

During the past decade, researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University have worked to develop a novel flotation process for treating very fine particles. This process, which is now commonly known as [microbubble column flotation] (MCF), has been shown to be very effective in a number of applications related to fine coal processing. These applications include the retrofit of existing preparation plant circuits and the recovery of additional coal fines from refuse streams. In addition, work conducted under the sponsorship of the United States Department of Energy indicates that the MCF process is capable of producing superclean and ultraclean coals from many eastern U.S. coals. This paper describes some of the basic problems associated with fine particle flotation and the design and operational features of the MCF process used to minimize these problems. Also presented are the results of ongoing pilot- and field-testing programs.

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. This is an update of an original dissertation on this topic by Lavallee, McIvor and Stolovitch (1992). A step-by-step, technical procedure used to measure and improve the performance of plant grinding circuits was adapted into a training program. ?Systematic Design of Instruction? was applied to: ? Determine if training was a suitable way to deliver this new technology; ? Define the technical content of the program; ? Select program specifications based on learner and context characteristics; ? Design, create and test prototypes of the training modules; and, ? Establish a process for plant implementation. The training program covers numerous skills that are extremely valuable for plant personnel, not only in the grinding area, but also for many other parts of the plant. This paper describes how new skills are brought into the workplace through designed instruction can be an effective alternative to hiring during severe skilled labor shortages.

A form of column flotation cell is described in which the contact between the feed and the air stream is made in a mixing device at the top of a vertical downcomer. The air-liquid mixture flows downward to discharge into a shallow pool of pulp in the bottom of a short cylindrical column. The bubbles disengage and rise to the top of the column to overflow into a concentrate launder, while the tails are discharged from the bottom of the vessel. The main advantages of the device described are that the overall height of the column is reduced to about one metre (3 ft), and the column can be self-inducing with respect to the air supply. Experimental results are given from tests on a feed stream to a conventional zinc cleaner circuit. Using wash-water to reduce gangue entrainment, the column gave high concentrate grades and high recoveries.

A study on fauna distribution and abundance is being conducted in the Giona Mountain, in central Greece, area of bauxite mining. The specific aims of the study are: a) to estimate and map the distribution of mammals, and especially of the Balkan chamois, b) to estimate and map the distribution and abundance of breeding birds, c) to count the bird species using the area during spring and autumn migration and winter, d) to update the list of mammal and bird species of the mountain, with emphasis on rare and endangered ones, according to 79/409, 92/43 EU Directives and other relevant conventions, e) to compare the bauxite mining areas and species distribution and assess the possible overlap and compatibility of mining activities - species conservation, f) to assess the possible habitat loss due to planned mining activities. All estimations of mammal species distribution and abundance are being carried out by fieldwork using spotlight during the night along selected routes. Especially for chamois, line transects and vantage points with the aid of telescopes and binoculars are being used. Birds are being counted with the point count method in randomly selected plots distributed in all available habitat types and altitudes. The species distribution and mining areas will appear on thematic maps with the aid of a geographical information system (GIS). Finally, solutions for environmentally compatible mining activity in the area will be proposed.

Polymers of a wide variety of composition are used in coal and mineral beneficiation. Applications include flocculation and coagulation in thickeners, filtration enhancement, mill scale control, dust control, ore leaching improvement, and pond management. The proper chemistry of the polymer is determined by many factors, including the nature of the process, mineral type, and respective performance requirements. This paper provides an overview of the various current applications of polymers in mineral processing, and a description of the applicable polymer chemistries which find utility in these applications. Examples of structure/performance relationships are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Cross, et al. (1974), produced a retrospective study of standard setting for underground miners. This report had two distinct components; i) criteria of importance for the protection of the miners, and ii) economic considerations for standard setting. The methods for setting radiation safety standards reviewed were: dose calculations and consensus methods; epidemiology; pathology; bioassay; animal experiments; sputum cytology; chromosome aberrations; and, the Mantel-Bryan Model. By looking back, the authors intended to enable officials to look ahead in making future decisions based on reasonable conclusions. Now it may be time to consider underground miners' protection from another perspective: are there miners who may be especially susceptible to toxic environments?; and if so, are there any biomedical assays that might be indicative of exceptional sensitivities to toxic substances? The human population is genetically very heterogeneous. The data of Saccomanno, et al. (1973), reveal great variability in individual response to radon daughter exposure and only a small portion of the miner population subject to toxic inhalants develop squamous cell metaplasia (Saccomanno, et al., 1970). The majority of the miner population is either not susceptible or is resistant to the toxic agents. This information suggests the existence of a small subpopulation with increased sensitivity or reduced resistance and underscores the need for indicators from biomedical assays that might prove of value for the detection of such individuals. The heightened awareness of the contribution of pollutants in the environment for the potential induction of mutations and carcinogenesis lead to a profusion of short-term bioassays to circumvent the high cost and time-consuming large toxicity animal studies. Over 100 bioassays across taxa from microbes to man are at various stages of use or development (Hollstein, et al., 1979). Less than a dozen tests currently offer early promise for application to[ in vivo] effect studies of man. Many are still in early development, lack the sensitivity needed for a retrospective or prospective study at current permissible exposures, are impractical to conduct in the field, or are not cost effective. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the bioassays that may now, or in the near term, prove applicable for the detection of individual underground miners with increased susceptibility to toxic agents. Throughout this statement, it is assumed that any single test may give false negatives or false positives and, therefore, a tier of tests should be investigated. The possible tests are in various stages of development; some tests better proven than others with a firmer data base and, therefore, with greater probability of usefulness. Some of the less proven assays are not ruled out if they have practical or theoretical promise as indicators. Table I summarizes the assays critiqued for their potential to monitor the effects of [in vivo] exposure to genotoxic substances. POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF HIGHLY SENSITIVE MINERS Assays of Body Fluids It is desirable to have data on the agent(s) to which subjects are exposed when humans are monitored by biomedical effects. Obviously, to varying intensity, the underground mining environments are monitored for radon daughters and it is recognized that the miners are also exposed to other pollutants, most notably, uranium ore dust and diesel fumes. Further testing for the metabolites of the pollutants can be done on body fluid, urine. [High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)]: This is a very sensitive method for the detection of mutagenic metabolites in urine. The urine is treated with the enzyme sulfatase and beta-glucuronidase to permit identification of substances that are made nonmutagenic by conjugation as glucuronides. The sample is then passed through an XAD-2 resin column and the absorbed organic molecules eluted with acetone. The sample is then split and evaporated to 1 ml and used for direct chemical analysis using HPLC. One drawback to the test is the inability to measure cumulative exposure, but multiple samples can be obtained and comparison to baseline (control) and exposure samples can reveal qualitative differences as a consequence of exposure to mutagens. [The Ames/Salmonella Microbiological Assay]: The Ames/Salmonella microbiological mutagen test is the most extensively used short-term bioassay, with over 2,600 chemicals having undergone testing by this method (Hollstein, et al., 1979). The method, thoroughly worked out and tested for 10 years, consists of taking the second split urine sample from the HPLC preparation, evaporating to dryness and dissolving in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Murray mine was one of the first Mechanized cut and fill underground gold operations in Northern Nevada. At the end of 2002 mine production began to decline and Murray entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary, in previously condemned areas, and in highly challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering, and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed Murray to remain in operation today. History The Murray mine is located on the Jerritt Canyon property, which is located 45 miles north of Elko, NV in the Independence mountain range. Mining operations started at Jerritt Canyon in 1980 out of several open pits. In 1993 underground mining began in conjunction with a decline of surface mining operations. The transition from surface mining to underground mining moved the property into a new era. At the time there were limited examples of successful underground operations in the area from which to draw experience. Several mining methods were attempted with varying degrees of success and underhand cut and fill proved to be the most effective method. To date Murray has mined 1.2 million ounces at an average grade of .335 OPT utilizing this mining method.

The motion of the charge inside a grinding mill is of considerable practical importance. The dynamics of grinding mills have been the subject of study by a number of workers because it can accurately predict: i) the power drawn by the mill, ii) the distribution of forces inside the mill, and hence the wear rate of balls as well as the liners, and iii) mass transport of milled product through the porous ball charge. Some of the earlier analyses of the motion of a charge of particulate material in a tumbling mill were reported by White (1904), Davis (1919), and Dyer (1945) and have been reviewed by Rose and Sullivan (1958). In these works, frictional force at the wall of the mill and between the colliding balls, and the interaction of different ball trajectories, was not considered. Moreover, it was assumed that the profile of the tumbling charge is independent of the degree of filling, which is generally not true. However, all this work led to the identification of so-called "equilibrium surface" which is the plane that separates the rotating charge into two regions. The inner region is static; here there is no motion relative to the mill shell. The other region is a shear region where either the balls flow down the surface of the charge (cascading motion), or are projected out of the surface and follow approximately parabolic paths (cataracting motion).

Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 ~ 25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the `Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 165o cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of `orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

As a part of the Department of the Interior's rutile and titaniferous materials development program conducted under the Defense Production Act, the Bureau of Mines investigated the potential for producing national stockpile grade rutile from plant products of phosphate beneficiation plants operating in the central Florida pebble phosphate district. The potential for producing ilmenite, zircon, and monazite concentrates from the plant products was also investigated. Results of these studies indicated that 3,000 to 6,000 tons of rutile, 28,000 to 55,000 tons of ilmenite, 9,000 to 19,000 tons of zircon, and 400 to 800 tons of monazite passed through the plant circuits annually. All of these minerals are presently being sent to waste ponds. Beneficiation of a bulk heavy mineral concentrate separated from the amine flotation tailing (froth product) of numerous plants in the district showed that it was possible to produce a rutile concentrate containing over 94 percent Ti02. Additional studies showed that over 70 percent of the Ti02 in the rutile concentrate could be isolated in a product containing 98.0 percent Ti02. The studies also showed that it was possible to produce ilmenite concentrates containing 63 percent Ti02, zircon concen¬trates containing 65 percent Zr02, monazite concentrates containing over 85 percent monazite [(Ce,La,Y,Th) (P04)], and xenotime concentrates containing over 35 percent xenotime (YPO4).

In the mining industry and in new and expanding fields, such as electronics, nucleonics, and astronautics, a new type of manager has evolved. The name most generally used is project manager. His business is to create a product and the principal means through which he accomplishes this is project management. In this chapter, new information is the product of the project manager; as such the products, for which the computer methods described throughout this volume are designed, fall in the domain of project management. It has been the author's experience that project management is the management tool to effectively direct the information technology function within an organization. The purpose of this chapter is to describe project management and to identify and present a solution to the problems associated with project management in the development and application of computer methods in a minerals environment. Specifically, the problems to be addressed will center around: (1) recognition of the need for project management in terms of business-environmental factors and product characteristics, (2) formulation of a method of operation in terms of organization and implementation, and (3) application of project management to the minerals industry.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents (1) modified slipform system which was employed for simultaneous concrete placement for permanent lining and Instruction of a partition wall in the execution of a ventilation shaft 620m deep, and (2) current shaft sinking techniques which have been applicable and efficient for the subsurface conditions in Japan. MODIFIED SLIPFORM SYSTEM FOR PERMANENT LINING OF VERTICAL SHAFT General Information This paragraph deals with rapid construction by using modified slipform system for the permanent concrete lining and a partition wall of ventilation shaft, which has inside diameter of 620m and depth of 620m, of Enasan Highway Tunnel. The general feature of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 1 and standard section of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 2. The geological condition surrounding the shaft is mainly of ryolite and surface is of talus, but as a whole, they are rather weak and weathered rocks with faults, fissures and clay seams. 220mm borehole for the geological investigation was used as a drainage hole, predicting the amount of water inflow into the shaft to be 10t/min. The shaft was executed mainly by means of the conventional short step sinking method of 1.2m lift, employing temporary headframe and hoists.
