A stochastic model for evaluating the impact of the reliability and maintainability of shovels and trucks on the operational effectiveness of shovel-truck mining systems is presented. In the model, the Markov modeling technique is used to analyze the operating status of a shovel-truck mining system. Then, simulation is used to study the productivity of a shovel-truck system in a particular state. Finally, the relationship between the effectiveness of a shovel-truck system in terms of productivity and the reliability and maintainability of equipment is established. This relationship may be very useful to mine managers in making decisions in surface mining (e.g., regarding production process control, equipment replacement, and maintenance planning). A quantitative study is given to demonstrate how the reliability and maintainability of equipment affect the system effectiveness and how to pinpoint the parameter that has the most significant effect on the system effectiveness. The quantitative study indicated that in order to improve the system effectiveness significantly, the reliability and maintainability of the equipment need to be improved simultaneously.

Today many small diameter tunnels are being constructed in Metropolitan areas and towns as transmission holes for utilities such as water, electricity, natural gas and sewage, to name a few. These tunnels function as utilities beneath the streets, highways, railways, and other structures where open-cut techniques are impractical for any one of a number of reasons. Many such bores range in diameter from 15 to 72 inches and in lengths from 100 to 500 feet. Auger drills with auger type heads have long been used to bore these "road crossings" as they are usually termed; however, many such crossings must be bored in rock with rock-boring heads. Rock with a compressive strength of 15,000 p.s.i. and higher seems to present the greatest challenge for the contractor. These rocks include most igneous and metamorphic rocks and some sedimentary rocks. In general, this grasps most granites, basalts, gneisses, slates, schists, quartzites, limestones, and cherts. In the past ten years boring machines have been developed and used to excavate road crossings through hard rock. Many crossings have been successfully excavated using these machines, and the degree of success has increased substantially in the last few years. A variety of machines have been built and manufactured to bore most rock in a range of diameters up to 72 inches. The machines vary in capabilities, size ranges, and designs but all perform the same basic task and function of boring horizontally. One of the first activities after returning to the Moon will be finding sources of water and materials for the construction of human settlements and other infrastructure. There is evidence of the existence of deposits in the bottom of craters at the South Polar region and in flat areas around. Based on geological data from the Moon, a block model representing a deposit or icy regolith has been defined in the vicinities of Shackleton Crater, with unique characteristics of shape, thickness, and water contents. A mine plan utilizing surface mine modeling software for ore extraction from an open pit- type of excavation to a delivery point near a water processing facility is proposed, with monthly, quarterly, and yearly schedules. Production results, dashboard charts and progress of the topographic changes are also presented.

The US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines is developing a process to selectively extract manganese from oxide ores as part of its in situ mining research program. The Bureau is conducting site characterization studies of two manganiferous iron-formation deposits. These studies include: drill core, regional stratigraphic relationships from the existing geologic database, ore body geometry, geologic structure, hydrologic conditions, accessibility of ore minerals to leach fluid, surface subsidence potential and data collected from laboratory leaching experiments. This information is being used to evaluate the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of in situ mining of manganese for these two deposits. This paper will focus on the stratigraphy, mineralogy, ore textures, fractures, permeability and porosity as they relate to in situ mining.

Roadheader machines have a specific place in modern tunnelling, not simply as a compromise between drill and blast techniques and full face machines, but as an economic and versatile form of mechanised tunnelling where the method of excavation is easily integrated with tunnelling operations. In the past, roadheaders have been subjected to misuses by engineers who failed to realise that, as in all mechanised tunnelling, a planned and systematic approach is essential if the full potential of these machines is to be gained. An increasing awareness of this, together with the introduction of the more powerful roadheader carrying their cutting potential into the hard range of rock is changing this situation and now makes the prospect of using roadheaders particularly attractive (1). The advantages gained by employing these machines can be considerable and Table 1 lists some of them. This table illustrates that from both cost, and installation points of view, the roadheader has considerable benefits over the full face machine. However, the principal advantage gained is in broken ground where heavy supports can be installed immediately at the tunnel face. In addition, access for planned maintenance and repairs to most working parts of the machine is at a premium and average machine utilisations of 40 - 60% can be expected. In comparison to drill and blast methods, up to 40% better progress can be regularly achieved, and the subsequent savings in overbreak costs alone would more than pay for the cost of a roadheader used to drive a 3km long tunnel. Location The Meggen Mine and the concentrator plant of the "Sachtleben Bergbau G.m.b.H." are located in the southern part of the Ruhr-district of the Federal Republic of Germany. The mine has been in operation for more than 100 years, but the concentrator described in this paper was built in 1962 and started up in January 1963. Goelogy and Mining The Meggen ore-body is of sedimentary origin and occurs in a zone of limestones, graywacke and shales of Devonion age. The average thickness of the deposit is 3 meters and, due to an intense folding of the area, the mineralized zone dips very steeply at 800 toward the north. The ore consists of 85 percent of sulfides and 15 percent gangue that mainly contains silicates from the host rocks. The principal ore minerals are pyrite (67 percent), sphalerite (16 percent) and galena (2 percent) with minor amounts of marcasite and only traces of chalcopyrite. As shown in Fig. 1, the sphalerite and galena are very finely disseminated in the massive pyrite of the Meggen ore, and a very fine grinding combined with a special flotation technique are required to liberate the valuable sulfides and to produce separate concentrates of lead, zinc and pyrite. Mining is performed by the sub-level stoping method and employs trackless equipment. Present operations provide ore from the 600 meter level. Annual ore production is 870,000 metric tons.

Spiral separators are commonly used to upgrade sand-sized particles in both the coal and mineral processing industries. Many plants utilize multiple stages of cleaning and/or scavenging spirals to improve recovery and/or final product grade. Field studies suggest, however, that the layout of industrial spiral circuits is often less than optimal. This oversight can usually be attributed to a failure by plant designers to consider fundamental process engineering rules that govern the layout of complex separation circuits. This article reviews some of these important rules as specifically applied to multistage spiral circuit design. Two industrial case studies, one involving the upgrading of heavy mineral sands and a second involving the cleaning of fine coal, are presented to illustrate the impact of good design protocols on spiral circuit performance.

This paper outlines the chance constrained binary integer program developed by the author in his doctoral dissertation at Columbia University, New York, 1973. The optimum planning of a mining program involves the determination of a production schedule which maximizes the net present value of the mining property. The actual mining process has an inherent stochastic and discrete nature. In particular, the demand for the mined product and the grade of the mineralized material in the ore are the two most important stochastic mining variables. The decision to mine or not to mine any block of a mining property is a binary integer variable. This paper outlines the formulation of pit production scheduling problem as a chance constrained binary integer program. The deterministic equivalents of these chance constraints are nonlinear in binary variables which have subsequently been linearized. The planned objective is to meet with a stipulated high degree of reliability, all the random demands as they materialize with a random supply of the commodity being marketed as determined by the eventuating random grade values of the exposed ore blocks and the mining system's production constraints such that the discounted total production costs over the entire planning horizon are minimized or the profits maximized. The emerging surface of the mine in each scheduling period is determined by the values taken by the binary decision variable associated with each block of material in each scheduling period.

Two key components make up the core of a rapid excavation operation. They are: the breaking up of the rock and its removal. Owing to the complexity inherent in mechanical rock-breaking and the relative infancy of the art, for a number of years the first of these two components has received virtually undivided attention from the industry. Only recently has some concern been expressed about the technology and the economics of the much ignored second component: muck removal. As the continuous boring machine's percentage downtime continues to trend lower in the future, the need for adequate and more effective materials handling systems in rapid excavation will become increasingly more acute. (1) Recognition of the need for a broader and more far-sighted approach to our problem has been eloquently underscored in the conclusions of the Committee on Rapid Excavation sponsored by the National Research Council: "Ultimate attainment of the desired cost and speed improvements is significantly dependent on recognition of the excavation process as a system whose subsystems are critically inter-related. Substantial amounts of full-scale field testing of integrated driving, muck removal, and support subsystems are required." (2)

"Dust pollution is very serious in coal mining process, which is a great threat to the underground staff health and equipment and facilities safety. Coal seam water injection in mining process is an effective way to reduce coal mine dust concentration at the source. However, the effectiveness of water injection is limited in high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam. To improve the moisture content of coal seam, expand the wetting range and enhance the effect of dust reduction by water injection, the injectability and influencing factors of coal water injection are analyzed by numerical simulation method, and the sealing technology under high-pressure condition is studied. Then, according to the practical conditions of Tangkou coal mine, the parameters and process system of process system are designed, the effect of high-pressure water injection in coal seam was determined by testing water injection quantity, water increment and dust concentration. It is showed that the dust-removal rate of the high dust concentration operation such as falling coal and moving frame is 63.49% and 59.72%, the maximum dust-removal rate of multi-processes is 53%, which achieve a high level of application. The research results in this paper is of important theoretical and practical value to improve the water injection effect of high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam and improve the efficiency of dust removal in coal mining process.Introduction With the increasing of the depth and mechanization of coal mining, coal dust, the impact of ground pressure, ground temperature and other natural disasters continue to upgrade the harm degree (Wang 2011, Wu et al 2012), disaster incidents occur frequently, which seriouslythreaten the safe and efficient mining and the physical and mental health of underground staff. Coal seam water injection can effectively reduce the coal dust when coal crushing, prevent the impact of mine pressure, coal and gas outburst disasters, by increasing the thermal conductivity of coal, reduce coal temperature, and prevent spontaneous combustion of coal. In addition, coal seam water can soften the hard coal, so that speed up the recovery rate, improve coal production and efficiency (Wu et al 2008, Nie et al 2007). However, the coal seam in many mining area is with high-pressure and low-porosity feature, Coal joint cracks are not developed and relatively hard, water injection is difficult in these coal seams, then the desired disaster prevention effect cannot be achieved (Jin et al 2001, Zhao et al 2000). In this paper, the numerical simulation and field test methods are used to design the high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam water injection technology, so as to solve the difficult problem of coal dust control in high-pressure and low-porosity in deep well mining process."

Presently, mobile diesel equipments contributes a lot in improving the economical feasibility of underground mining and tunneling operations. Even in Korea, quite a large number of diesel equipments is being applied to the underground workings already. This paper introduced the production procedure, characteristics and evaluation technology on diesel particulate matter(DPM) that is known as a carcinogen For easy measurement of DPM using laser dust monitor, the conversion factor(K) to gravimetric concentration was acquired. The field measurement of DPM was conducted to make a comparison between locally manufactured on-road equipments and imported equipments specially designed for underground use. According to the Government regulation revised h 1996, it was learned that the critical pollutants among the diesel exhaust is DPM instead of NOx which have been considered as a critical pollutants.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued study of the Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) developed by Rupprecht & Patashnick Co. Inc. through a CDC contract and currently being commercialized by Thermo Fisher Scientific. This report examines the effect of oversize particles, cyclone inversion, and cleaning procedures. Clean and exposed filters were examined using light microscopy and particulates counted before and after various instrument manipulations. The data presented show that the dry cleaning procedures do not cause significant (greater than limit of detection) sample contamination by respirable or oversize particulates and that the cyclone is resistant to particulate carry over during inversion.

Batch flotation tests are carried out with phosphatic material from LKAB, Sweden containing carbonatic and siliceous gangue while using sodium oleate as collector and sodium silicate as modifier. The pulp liquid is analysed for oleate, silicate, carbon dioxide, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous after each flotation test under different reagent conditions and flotation pH. Theoretical calculations of thermodynamic chemical equilibria in apatite-calcite-sodium oleate-sodium silicate system have been carried out with the help of SOLGASWATER computer program. During the calculations, the chemical variables are maintained similar to the operating chemical variables in flotation. A comparision between the experimental and theoretical chemical equilibria has been made and the flotation behaviour of apatite is discussed with reference to the theoretically calculated pulp model.

The slurry wall technique has undergone an evolution from its invention to its today’s status. In the early stages slurry walls were built with cable grab, later on with much stronger hydraulic grab and last but not least with the use of the cutter technique. The cutter allows thick walls with high verticality to extreme depths through hard soil and rock formations. With the rising demand of the construction of watertight diaphragm walls different joint systems have been developed. In addition to the rapid development of excavation systems it was necessary to improve slurry treatment and desanding plants, especially in conjunction with high performance trench cutters. Deep mixing methods can be used economically for the construction of cut-off or excavation support walls where other systems such as traditional soldier beams and lagging walls would yield unsatisfactory performance, where the installation of vibrated or driven sheet piles could cause vibration induced settlements and where concrete diaphragm walls would be time consuming and expensive. The new CSM method can largely replace the more conventional single or multiple auger methods of soil mixing or jet grouting. The cutter tool is similar to a cutter used in diaphragm walls or cut-off walls and is operated with a Kelly mounted on a drilling rig or rope suspended on a crane jib or mast of a base carrier. With this system much deeper walls can be installed and even hard soil layers can be penetrated.

"Cast blasting is the primary means of overburden displacement in a surface coal mine. It serves two purposes; fragmenting the rock and throwing it directly to its spoil pile using explosive energy. Increased throw minimizes costs by reducing the amount of material that needs to be rehandled. Prior studies have shown that by only changing blasthole timing with the same blast design, fragmentation and throw alter. It is necessary in cast blasting to optimize both fragmentation and throw, since larger fragments will require more wasted energy to throw the same distance. In an operating mine in Georgia, an optimum interhole delay for fragmentation has been found by studying timings from 0 millisecond (ms) to 45 ms. Instantaneous timing between holes increased the throw by more than 31 m (100 ft), but fragmentation was poor. Shock and detonation wave collision is a potential reason for this increased throw.Explosives are utilized extensively by the mining industry in order to break rock, as either ore or overburden, for hauling, loading and crushing. An effective production blast strives to achieve optimum rock fragmentation in order to increase the efficiency and reduce the costs of those downstream operations, while simultaneously meeting environmental regulations. The goal of blasting with respect to fragmentation is, according to Hettinger (2015), “to decrease the average particle size of the fragmented rock without overly increasing fines or, in other words, improve fragmentation.”Additionally, the distance the rock is transported by the explosive energy from the blast, also known as throw, can increase efficiency by reducing the amount of material that is rehandled by mine equipment. The primary situation in which this is desirable is the cast blasting of overburden across the narrow pit of a surface coal mine. A key variable in a blast design pattern that can be manipulated to optimize both fragmentation and throw is delay timing between detonations. The invention and increased utilization of electronic detonators have allowed for precise delay timings to be used between rows, holes and even multiple primers within the same hole. These recent developments in the blasting community have also provided an opportunity to investigate whether or not the mechanism of shock or detonation wave collisions caused by short timing delays are responsible for any increased fragmentation or throw. This experiment attempts to demonstrate if an increase in throw can be achieved while maintaining optimum fragmentation."

Land management planning is an important issue in all jurisdictions, especially as it relates to mineral development. These planning documents are prepared at different intervals and reflect the realities at the time that they were prepared. The Seven Questions to Sustainability developed during the North American Process of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project are proposed for the evaluation of Land Use Plans as they relate to Mineral Development. This paper provides the background to the Seven Questions to Sustainability and how it can be applied to the evaluation of land use plans with specific reference to Resource Management Plans developed by the U. S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Land Management in Nevada. While this paper is focused on Nevada, the approach is broadly applicable and may be used in other planning regimes.

Resin-in-leach (RIL) cyanidation experiments were performed on a refractory carbonaceous gold ore. The objective of this investigation was to determine if strong-base ion exchange resins could adsorb the soluble aurocyanide complex in preference to natural "preg robbing" organic constituents. Direct cyanidation of the carbonaceous gold ore used in this study resulted in less than 2% gold extraction in 24 hr. RIL cyanidation resulted in about 70% gold recovery onto the resin. Kinetic experiments indicated that 50% of the gold is extracted after 1 hr of leaching. Resin breakage was investigated for as-received and preattrited resins. Similar results were obtained with three different strong base resins.

In Arctic surface mines, frozen ground adds to the complexity of slope stability analysis. The seasonal temperature change may thaw permafrost, and this thawed ground is often unstable. A computer program, GEODYNE, was used to simulate the movement of the thaw front in bare and insulated permafrost slopes. The simulation shows that the insulation can be used on mine slopes to prevent thawing.

The block cave mining method poses unique ventilation challenges compared to other underground metal mining methods. This research study focuses on assessing the airflow behavior in regulated airflow distribution systems by developing a 1:100 scaled block cave experimental model and a numerical model. This study also investigated gas flow behavior under various airflow conditions. Based on our findings, we observed that reduction in particle size and porosity of caved materials, decrease in cave footprint, and closure of undercut drifts would increase cave airflow resistance. The increased airflow is found to be beneficial for gas dilution regardless of its source locations, while the regulated airflow distribution system might deteriorate the gas dilution situation when the source is located in the extraction drifts.
