When overburden depth exceeds economical recovery in openpit coal mines, the use of highwall mining systems has increasingly come into play. However, stability in the highwalls is always a major safety concern during such mining. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that highwall mining operators follow ground control plans that specify the pillar sizes necessary to prevent collapse that would threaten highwall stability.

A finite-difference model using a digital computer was constructed to assist in the water management of a proposed oil-shale mining operation in the Piceance Basin in Colorado. The presence of ground water is both a detriment and a benefit for development of the resource. On one hand, dewatering is required because permeable zones are present in and above the oil-shale sequence, and rich oil shale at the proposed mine is as much as 457 m (1500 ft) below the water table. On the other hand, ground water is the most feasible source of water for processing the oil shale. A ground- water model was constructed to simulate the development of an environmentally acceptable water-management system that will satisfy both the mine-dewatering requirements and the water-supply requirements for processing. The ground-water model discussed in this chapter was constructed for the Rio Blanco Oil Shale Co. (RBOSC) by International Engineering Co., Inc., a subsidiary of Morrison-Knudsen Co. The model was applied to evaluate dewatering and water control systems for several open-pit mining plans initially investigated to develop Federal Lease Tract C-a. A collateral application of the model analyses was to project effects of the proposed dewatering operation on the regional ground-water regime in connection with a permit acquisition program by RBOSC. Subsequently, RBOSC has completely changed its mine development plan and has adopted modeling and related techniques more suitable for study of that plan and dewatering operation. An insufficient hydrologic data base exists for most large and small coal basins in Alaska owing to the lack of need in the past to collect data. The runoff process is insufficiently understood which is complicated by specifically northern phenomenon, and the lack of understanding of hydrologic relationships in permafrost environment. This paper presents an understanding of the hydrologic effects of frozen ground and presents methods by which the influence of surface mining upon the hydrologic balance can be analyzed.

The basic development of various mining equipment has been strongly influenced by two objectives; improving economic results and safety aspects. Both of these factors contribute to increased requirements of mechanization and automation in different parts of mining processes. When we are limiting the discussion the crushing circuits, automation has two dimensions, one being the component automation, or intelligence, the other being automation of complete processes. Both of these subjects are closely tied up, the former being a condition for the latter. The key technologies of crushing automation are transducers, programmable logics and computer software. Also equipment technology continually faces new challenges, which result even in totally new product families. One example of this kind of development area the track-mounted, integrated crushing systems, where design criteria have been simple control, unmanned operation, and flexibility in changing requirements. This crushing system, or philosophy, offers excellent possibilities for new concepts in various underground and open pit applications, connected with automatic process control. Following presentation is a summary of aspects, of haw a crusher manufac¬turer sees the development of automa¬tion as an integral part of equipment technology and development.

The seven most important base and precious metals produced in Canada are copper, nickel, lead, zinc, molybdenum, gold and silver. Because much of Canada's mineral production is exported in the form of concentrates, it is of special interest to keep track of the production of these various concentrates and the capacity utilization of the concentrators producing them. Annual data surveys on individual concentrators, coupled with the interactive capabilities of the computerized mineral product ion system through a custom-tailored, fairly low-cost computer system configuration are used for ongoing monitoring. Rapid analysis of concentrator production can be carried out on a disaggregated basis that allows policymakers to see specific reasons for significant changes over the years.

Biooxidation processes for treating arsenical and other types of refractory gold ores are touted by many as being simple, inexpensive and environmentally friendly. One of the advantages claimed by proponents of biooxidation is that arsenic is disposed of as insoluble ferric arsenate which is suitable for long term disposal in tailings ponds. However, there is considerable controversy as to the stability of ferric arsenate with respect to re-dissolution of arsenic. In particular, there is concern that the amorphous ferric arsenate produced at low temperature is not stable, especially at the alkaline pH's required for cyanidation. There is a general lack of published information on the stability of arsenical bioleach tailings. Past work on ferric arsenate stability has usually involved purely chemical systems and the use of synthetically prepared precipitates. Upon completing the Salmita bioleach pilot plant campaign (Hackl and Wright, 1989) the author had the opportunity to test the stability of the arsenical bioleach/cyanide tailings which were produced. This paper summarizes the results of that work.

This chrysotile asbestos ore body is located near the northern tip of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It is some 1818 km (1130 miles) north of Montreal, 480 km (300 miles) north of the tree line, and is situated within the zone of continuous permafrost. The open pit ore zone is approximately 0.4 km (1% mile) in length, some 61 m (2OO ft) in width and plunges at 25o to 30 o below surface to a vertical depth of at least 610 m (2000 ft). The ore body was originally evaluated by programs of surface mapping, diamond drilling, and bulk sampling. The fiber is semicrude, possesses excellent strength, and good fiber length distribution. GEOLOGICAL SETTING, LOCATION, AND DISCOVERY The chrysotile asbestos mineralization at the Asbestos Hill mine occurs in serpentinized ultrabasic rocks of Precambrian age. These intrusive rocks are found in older volcanic sedimentary rocks known as the Cape Smith-Wakeham Bay belt and are shown in Fig. 1. The rocks comprising this belt overlie older basement rocks composed of granite and granite gneiss. This belt has a width of 32 to 64 km (20 to 40 miles), and trends in a general east- west direction, a distance of about 370 km (230 miles) from Wakeham Bay on the east coast of the Ungava Peninsula to Cape Smith, located on the east side of Hudson Bay. Two sequences of rock have been recognized in this belt. The lower (oldest) rocks are known as the Povungnituk group, and consist principally of massive lavas and sediments. The upper (younger) rocks are known as the Chukotat group, and are composed of pillowed lavas with interbedded sedimentary rocks. Sills of ultrabasic rocks exist in both younger and older rocks, but are more often found in the Povungnituk group. Concentrations of chrysotile asbestos, as well as nickel and copper minerals are found at or near the base of ultrabasic sills, and are most common where a change in dip occurs. The mine is situated about 1818 km (1130 miles) north of Montreal, approximately 1126 km (700 miles) north of the start of continuous permafrost, and about 482 km (300 miles) north of the tree line. The depth of permafrost at the mine site has been calculated to be approximately 549 m (1800 ft). This rich deposit of asbestos was discovered in 1957 during extensive exploration for nickel in the Ungava nickel belt. During that year, traverses conducted by Murray Watts spotted interesting looking ultrabasic rocks, and followup ground examination disclosed rich surface showings of asbestos mineralization near the present open pit. As the 2009 George Fox Conference neared its conclusion, Arthur Silber, project chief of the Mass Transit Tunnel (MTT) project was able to pull away from the constant buzzing of his Blackberry long enough to give a short presentation and a significant piece of news to the record 318 attendees at the Graduate Center, City University of New York regarding the MTT project. ?As the former administration (The Bush administration) was leaving office, we were told that Congress was notified of the FTA?a (Federal Transit Authority?s) intent to issue final design construction approval to us,? Silber said of recent advancements concerning the $7.2-billion dollar project. It will add passenger rail service from New Jersey to New York City as part of the Access to the Region?s Core project in the form of the Trans Hudson Express Tunnel (THE tunnel). ?That 10-day waiting period ended yesterday (Jan. 26).? In days leading up the Fox Conference, those involved in the tunneling industry, and the MTT in particular, had a lot to be optimistic about. The MTT received environ-mental approval on Jan. 14 (see page 9) and, with the acceptance of the final design, the multi-billion dollar project moved that much closer to a ground-breaking ceremony. So close, in fact, that before leaving his office for the conference, Silber posted the contract documents and plans for the Manhattan Tunnel project online at www.arctunnel.com (an indepth look at the project from Silber is on page 22). While many were interested in the progress of the project, Silber also spoke about the new plans for the cavern complex at the New York Penn Station expansion. The original plans called for two lines that would come into a large cavern complex with a north and south cavern to access the trains. After numerous core samples were taken from the streets of Manhattan, it was deter-mined that this design was not feasible and changes were made that will include a deeper cavern under Sixth Avenue, with 14-m (45-ft) of cover with a 30-m (96-ft) wide cavern that resides entirely under 34th Street. The cavern was also moved 20 m (60 ft) to the west to remain at least 61 m (200 ft) away from New York City Water Tunnel #1. The new design will include three-over-three track arrangement. The mezzanine will be 46 m (150 ft) below street level at 8th Ave, Silber said.

Re-entrainment refers to dislodgement of particles deposited by both atmospheric and nonatmospheric processes and their subsequent insertion into a flowing field. Formation of sand dunes, snow drifts, soil erosion and fugitive dust emissions are a few examples of the natural occurrence of re-entrainment. Re-entrainment studies have been done for the estimation of potential hazards from nuclear fallouts. The phenomenon of re-entrainment has been utilized for the cleaning of wafers and filters. Re-entrainment is associated with both surface and underground mining activities. However, studies on dust re-entrainment in mine atmospheres are limited. Understanding the re-entrainment phenomenon is important because dust particles lying seemingly harmless on the ground and adhering to numerous surfaces can get re-entrained and become a health and safety hazard. There are significant differences in the kind of re-entrainment encountered in underground mines and those in other fields of interest. These major differences are air velocity, direction of air flow, particle size, amount of particles, and time of exposure. While numerous studies have been done in other fields to identify the role of interacting variables and their contribution to the mechanisms of re-entrainment, no similar reported work is available for dust in mine atmospheres. In this paper, recent research efforts on re-entrainment are reviewed. The most suitable form of representing re-entrainment in underground coal mine atmosphere is presented. Various approaches to studying re-entrainment phenomenon in mines are also outlined.

Measurement of gamma radiation occurring in nature to characterize geological formations has been widely recognized in mineral exploration. Different methods and apparatuses have been developed for drill hole logging purposes. Geological formations vary in amount of naturally emitted gamma radiation. A gamma signature from a geological formation is captured by utilizing different types of gamma detectors. A natural gamma radiation detector (NGRD) can be used to control mining whenever there is a significant difference between the radiation levels in the mineral or ore being mined and the waste materials surrounding the ore. Surface miners, such as the one shown in Figure 1, can precisely control the elevation of the cutter as the machine moves over the surface of the formation. This type of machine is predominantly used in selective mining operations, e.g. surface coal mining. If there is a means to know the position of the cutter relative to the interface between the ore and waste, the miner can recover all or most all of the valuable mineral with very little out-of-seam dilution. This paper discusses the results of a successful application of gamma detectors to control a surface miner at one of North American Coal Corporations? locations - Red Hills Mine. The mine has nine coal seams in total with thicknesses ranging from 12? to 60?. The bottom six seams (Figure 2) are minable. The mine has complex geology and a significant amount of annual rainfall (4.7 ft). The mine produces approximately 3.5 million tons of coal and about 40 bcy of overburden per year. The operation utilizes diverse mining equipment including Dragline Marion 8200, electric shovel P&H 2800, Caterpillar end dump trucks CAT 785 and 789; bulldozers CAT D11, D10, D8, and D6. Coal is mainly extracted by utilizing a Wirtgen SM 4200 surface miner that is loading CAT 785 trucks with high volume coal bodies and payload of 150 t. Operational cutting depth is 24 inches with maximum cutting depth of 36 inches. Surface miner operators determine a cutting depth based on multiple cues, the most important being visual observations of a coal seam being cleaned or mined. The cleaning process involves removal of the last foot of waste material covering the coal seam. This is one of two critical phases in the coal extraction process. If, during the cleaning process, an operator sets a cutting head too deep, valuable product is wasted. If it is set too shallow, waste material is left to be mined with the coal. The second critical phase occurs in the last cut on the interface between the coal and waste material at the bottom of the coal seam. If the cutting head goes deeper than favorable, then waste material is delivered to a power plant.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued Program Information Bulletin P09-03in April of 2008, providing formal guidance on using programs that model the redistribution of stress during underground mining of coal. A key part of this guidance is visual observation and mapping of ground conditions. If a correlation between ground conditions and model output can be established, the model is considered to be verified, and can be used to guide mine design in similar ground. A simple scale is recommended for ranking observed roof, rib, and floor conditions. This paper discusses optimization and implementation of a ground condition rating scheme in the gateroads of a deep underground longwall coal mine. Roughly 80% of each gateroad length deteriorated in a fairly uniform manner. However, this manner varied between gateroads, as did pillar size. The implementation of a ground condition mapping program, similar to that recommended in PIB 09-03, was successful in characterizing the ground response to mining in gateroads of a longwall coal mine.

S.L. Barua and Y.C. Kim M. Armstrong's paper is very interesting and can be regarded as a pioneering work of applying geostatistics on washed coal. The density levels used in her study are uniformly spaced, which facilitated curve fitting through a proper experimental design. Most of the existing coal washing plants in the US, however, gather washability data at non-uniform intervals which, in turn, affects the goodness of curve fitting. We would like to emphasize the importance of having a proper experimental design, if a similar geostatistical application is to be conducted on washed coal. We, at the University of Arizona, tried the variogram on recovery (Kim, Barua, and Baafi, 1982, SME preprint 82-143) which showed a similar pattern as Fig. 4 of Armstrong's paper. In both cases, the first experimental variogram value is invariably and inexplicably higher than the second variogram value. Although Armstrong ignores the first point because of "small number of sample points," we did not do so because there were 17 sample pairs. As a consequence, we concluded that the obtained experimental variogram was unsatisfactory and that further research is warranted. In other words, this disagreement in variogram interpretation between M. Armstrong and the University of Arizona begs the question whether the experimental variogram of Fig. 4 truly reflects the spatial correlation in washed coal, assuming there is such a correlation. Finally, we wish that Armstrong could have done a similar study on clean sulfur, which is a vital interest to the coal mines in the US. Her implied remark on sulfur in the concluding section of the paper may turn out to be incorrect because our experimental variograms on clean sulfur at different density levels were even less satisfactory than those on recovery.

Coal-water slurry preparation requires fine grinding and cleaning of coal by flotation. Finer grinding leads to increased ball wear and its effect on the surface properties of coal becomes of concern. Marked ball wear tests were performed to study the effects of oxygen, pH, the soluble species of coal and the addition of pyrrhotite on ball wear. The synergistic action of coal and oxygen greatly enhanced the corrosion of mild steel balls during grinding. Electrochemical measurements on a mild steel electrode in coal slurries and SEM observations of grinding ball surfaces were carried out to explore the corrosive wear mechanism.

Introduction Surface mining is a business, and the objective of most businesses is to make as much money as possible within certain responsible constraints. Businesses normally measure their potential to make money by estimating the discounted cash flow rate of return on new projects or the net present value for ongoing projects. These estimators of profitability are calculated using the following well-known equation: [ ] where i is the year, n is the total number of years, A, is the after tax net cash generation in year I, r is the discount rate and NPV is the net present value. In its simplest form, when the value of r makes the NPV equal to zero, the discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR) is defined. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified at the point where the NPV or DCF-ROR is at a maximum. Depending on the measure used (DCF-ROR or discount rate) for calculating the NPV, the definition of recoverable reserve will be different for exactly the same deposit. Maximization of the measure of profitability and the economically recoverable reserves should not be separated from the mining method and sequence of exploiting the reserve. The surface mining methods may involve multiple-pass development of the resource, mining to the ultimate limit in one pass or a combination of the two methods with backfill. Multiple-pass development When planning a multiple-pass mining operation, it is important to determine the width of pit expansions that are appropriate for a specific situation. Production personnel typically want wide, open work areas where operations can be set up to run at peak efficiency. While this is understandable, the trade-off between highly efficient production operations and an overinvestment in stripping should be carefully weighed. As long as safety is not compromised, a few cents per bank cubic yard increase in operating cost due to lower productivity by working in more confined spaces may well be offset by a decrease in the overall short-term stripping requirements. A mini study on productivity and cost should help quantify this cost before deciding on minimum phasing requirements. The bigger challenge associated with establishing smaller work areas is securing operations and management buy-in to marginally lower productivity when reporting results. When cost reduction is the important management goal and everyone is focusing on unit costs, one sometimes loses sight of the goal of total cost management and, even more importantly, maximum profitability. The first pit should be defined by the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. 1 is constructed for a rate of production, R, and a quality management strategy, Q, by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, with each sequence assuming that the operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. These values are plotted to form the curve in Fig. 1. If the operation ceases on a pit that has too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have made more money invested at the discount rate than by mining the next pit expansion. Therefore, the maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV. There may be an opportunity to refine the definition of the "ultimate pit" around the maximum-value point. The precise definition of the ultimate pit early in the mine life may or may not be important today, depending on how far off in the future these limits will be reached. There has been a significant progress in the use of mathematical modeling and simulation in the minerals industry in the last decade. Process models have moved from academic world to important industrial tools. This paper reviews the status of mineral processing simulators and recent progress in simulator development and applications is discussed. The simulation for process design and optimisation is now an established technique, as evidenced by its increasing use of practising engineers through commercially available simulator software. The paper presents a systematic approach to the process study procedure for the control system development, clarified by practical case examples calculated by SimCon - a novel steady-state simulator for mineral processes. Examples of the application of SimCon in drawing flowsheets, calculating mass balances and making simulations for grinding and flotation processes are presented. At the end of the paper, the state-of-the-art and the future of computer-aided pro- cess study at mineral processing plants is discussed. Whisker growth during the reduction of iron ores The phenomenon of whisker growth can be observed in a number of solid-state crystallisation reactions, which, apparently, appear in6 the first instance as though they are two independent processes. From such reactions, one can find the whisker type of crystallisation on solid bodies. These examples show, that the whisker growth is neither due to certain crystal forms with predetermined temperature and pressureranges, nor to parameters, which, ad hoc, are necessary for the crystallisation. In all cases the whisker formation seems to depend on nucleation and the availability of crystallizing material in direct environment of such a nucleus, under given parameters of a system. One can generally state, that the research of whisker growth with the aim of establishing proper physical laws, to determine the foundamentals of whisker formation and whisker growth, is at present under active study. We can conclude that, although a great number of hypothesis have been proposed; no concluding theory has yet been arrived at. In the institute for ferrous metallurgy of the technical university of Aachen, research works are undertaken to find an explination to various metallurgical phenomena through help of whisker growth which was observed under varying conditions of iron ore reduction. This was possible by using refined microscopic techniques through which the whisker growth on solid oxyde substrates is detected. This refined technique combines the latest methods of surface examination with the help of stereo-scan-electron-microscope and proper and carefull preparation of surface to be stereo-scanned.

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate data on weak rock masses into existing design relationships, with an emphasis on updating the span design curve for manned entries and the overbreak curve for longhole entries. Both curves were originally developed at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. The original database has been augmented by information from mines throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. The common factor in all these mines is the presence of a weak back and/or walls. In most cases, the ore zone is the weakest rock unit and must be stabilized so that the mineral-bearing rock can be extracted safety. The current NIOSH research attempts to provide rock mechanics tools to assist a mine operator in making economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment. This paper documents the Nevada database with a special emphasis on Nevada underground gold mines.

The dewatering of stable phosphatic clay suspensions generated from phosphate beneficiation in the central Florida is an issue of practical and theoretical importance. Because of its tiny particle size and surface charge, the phosphatic clay takes up to 20-30 years to settle in water and causes environmental, aesthetic, economic, and handling problems. An efficient and cost-effective dewatering/consolidation process for phosphatic clay is of great interest to the phosphate industry in Florida. In this paper, the consolidation and dewatering behavior of phosphatic clay was studied by use of anionic flocculants with and without sand addition. The effects of pH, initial polymer concentration, polymer dosage, polymer addition steps, and metal cations (K+, Ca2+, and Al3+) on the flocculation of phosphatic clay have been studied. Experimental results indicated that clay suspensions were well flocculated at pH 10.5 by DPW-1-1355 and Magnafloc 5250 flocculants acquired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Sand particles from phosphate flotation added to the clay slurry promoted flocculation and increased clay consolidation. K+ showed good performance to improve the flocculation characteristics by neutralizing clay surface charge. The adsorption mechanisms of flocculants on clay particles were also discussed in this paper.

Two types of native sulfur deposits have been found in Lechuguilla Cave: thin late-stage crusts and massive early- formed deposits. Most, if not all, of the crusts appear to have formed by remobilization of native sulfur contained within gypsum and sulfur masses. The process is occurring today and is slowly converting the sulfur to gypsum. The absence of primary gypsum or reductants in the cave indicates that the early-formed massive sulfur deposits did not form by in-place reduction of sulfate, which is the process that formed the commercial sulfur deposits in the Delaware basin. Instead, it appears that H2S dissolved in basinal brines was oxidized by oxygen in near-surface ground waters in the cave. Fluid- inclusion data, which suggest the presence of both fresh water and saline water as the sulfur formed, support this interpretation. Although individual sulfur deposits in Lechuguilla Cave are no more than several tens of metric tons, the abundance of secondary gypsum (as much as 10 meters thick) indicates that native sulfur may once have been much more extensive.
