The development of heap leach technology for the treatment of low grade gold and silver ores has led to a boom in gold production in the Western United States in the last 15 years. The heap leaching process consists of stacking the mined ore on a specially prepared leach pad followed by leaching with dilute alkaline cyanide solution. Depending on the nature of the ore, it may require crushing and/or agglomeration prior to stacking on the leach pad. As the dilute alkaline cyanide solution migrates down through the stacked ore, the precious metal values along with a portion of the base metal values present in the ore are dissolved to give a pregnant leach solution which is collected at the base of the stacked ore. The precious metal values are then recovered by zinc precipitation or by adsorption on activated carbon. Once all of the economic metal values have been leached from the ore, the spent heap leach pad, the leached materials, and associated process solutions must be decomissioned. Decommissioning requires that the spent heap leach pad along with the leached materials and process solution be treated to reduce the concentration of the residual cyanide, base metal cyanide complexes, and other anionic metal species to levels where they no longer represent a long tenn liability for the environment and the operator. The levels to which these components must be reduced is dependent upon the applicable water quality standards as determined by the responsible federal, state, and local agencies. As environmental awareness has grown, these standards have become increasingly stringent. A number of treatment options have been developed for the de-toxification of the process residues. These include natural degradation which incorporates bio-degradation, fresh water rinsing, alkaline chlorination, hydrogen peroxide, and sulfur dioxide/air. Each of these options has been reviewed with regard to relative effectiveness, generation of hazardous by­products, reagent handling considerations, relative costs, and time requirements by Denton, Iverson, and Gosling I. As an outgrowth of the program to develop Henkel's guanidine based gold extractants, COGNIS, Inc., the environmental ann of Henkel, has developed the CyanoMet R process for the extraction and concentration of the various cyanide and anionic metal species from the dilute aqueous alkaline solutions generated during the process of detoxifying spent heap leach pads. This paper describes the CyanoMet R process, its application to three different feed solutions, and treatment of the concentrate generated by the process.

This paper presents a cyclic queueing model which evaluates the productivity of a shovel-truck materials haulage system. For a cyclic queueing problem with exponentially distributed service times, a cyclic queueing model provides exact solutions in a fraction of the time that simulation takes to produce an approximate solution. The model is applied to an example problem, and the results are validated with simulation. Simulation is used to show that the assumptions of exponentially distributed service times and steady-state are not serious problems. A cyclic queueing model can be used to quickly obtain an accurate assessment of the productivity of a shovel-truck system.

"Northwestern Pacific submarine seamounts are believed to be future marine mining areas of ferromanganese crusts, which contain hi-tech industrial metals, such as Co, Ni, Te, Ti, Pt, and REEs. The Takuyo No. 5 seamount is a member of the Cretaceous super-plume seamounts in the north Pacific, located within a Japanese EEZ (100 nm from the Minami- Torishima Is. or Marcus Is.), and only 300 nm away from the Japan’s Licensed area for exploration of Co-rich ferromanganese crusts under the ISA. This is an on-going program supported by independent academic communities but not a state-run program or managed by private funding.We have observed, sampled, measured, and analyzed the occurrences, distribution, physical properties, and microbiological environments at a selected flat topped seamount named Takuyo No.5 as a model area for scientific study of ferromanganese crusts within the Japanese EEZ. We then characterized crust structures, composition, age, and growth history, resulting in an understanding of the overall nature and distribution of these deposits from wide range of areas, water depths and geological environments. The study started with a ROV (Hyper-Dolphin 3K of JAMSTEC) exploration jointly with universities and national institutions (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal Exploration Corporation, and Geological Survey of Japan) in 2009 using marine geology vessels, remotely-operated vehicle, an oceanbottom drill machine, deep-tow TV camera, as well as conventional dredges and corers. We have been studying the topography, geology, nature of the bottom material of the seamounts using delicate sampling devices and measurement tools, and characterized the distribution patterns of the metal-rich ferromanganese deposits from chemical, mineralogical, and microbiological points of view."

Microscopic observation of physical and chemical changes which take place in various materials under conditions of elevated temperature and controlled atmosphere can often yield valuable insight into the fundamental physical-chemical reactions which control processes in which these materials play an active role. The technique of high-temperature microscopy thus becomes an important tool for basic and applied research in pyrometallurgical and allied fields. Investigators have long been aware of this and through the years have applied the technique to a wide variety of problems. However, up to this time, application has been on a rather limited scale due to the high initial cost of equipment and the relatively low rate of production of data resulting from the complexity of the apparatus and attendant problems in manipulation.

The mineralogical and chemical compositions of various waste materials undergo different reactions when treated thermally The heavy metal contents can be bound to stable phases. These minerals are called reservoir minerals. The main property of these minerals is the stability in their geochemical surrounding containing the heavy metal cations and anions. Examples for these minerals are apatites, spinels, garnets, perovskites and also water containing minerals like ettringites, metal-metal-hydroxi salts, jarosites and zeolites. When the chemical compositions of different wastes are mixed according to the compositions of the new formed minerals, a probable reuse of these wastes can be obtained. The use of waste incineration ashes for the production of cementitious binders and the use of flue gas desulfurization products for cement additives are shown. Also the transformation of highly contaminated materials into stable reservoir mineral assemblages are shown including the study of stabilization and immobilization techniques.

The ‘Westerschelde Tunnel’ underpasses the estuary of the Schelde in the Netherlands. The tunnel will consist of two tubes which are driven by two hydroshields (slurry shields). The tunnels will each have a length of approx. 6.6km and a bore-diameter of 11.33 m. Demanding ground conditions had to be considered during the design of the shield machines. Loose sands, extensive clay formations and high ground water pressures of up to 6.5 bar will be encountered during the tunnel drive. The tunnelling activities will start in the middle of 1999 and are scheduled to end by the end of 2001.

The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduction through semi-infinite homogeneous and isotropic airway walls with convective heat and moisture transfer between their wet or dry naked surfaces and mine air with time variable temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for computation of the temperature distribution and surface temperature of the airway walls and floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. The presented solutions are derived for general conditions and they could be easily adapted to the actual ones. Results of the model represent basis for balancing heat and moisture transfer between mine air and its surrounding in deep mines under time variable temperature and humidity of the air and enable us to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an airway system by relatively simple mathematical tools. INTRODUCTION The importance of unfavourable influences and the costs of condition arrangements increases with mine depth. Precision demands on the methods which predict the environmental condition changes and by which it is possible to optimize condition arragements are still increasing. Environmental conditions in deep mines are determined especially by flow velocity, barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity of mine air. Therefore new and more exact mathematical models of mine air flow through airway system and those of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and individual important sources of heat and moisture are developed. The paper presented deals with description and solution of problems of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls as the rock mass is one of the important heat and moisture sources in deep mines. There are several different approaches to the problem. In some models the moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls is not considered at all. In other models the moisture transfer is described only by certain empirical coefficients. Simultaneous heat and moisture transfer is described seldom. This paper describes the field application of the NTH fracture classification to rock encountered in the construction of the 9.6 km long, 10m diameter, Second Manapouri Tailrace Tunnel. Excavation of the tunnel was undertaken by TBM between 1997 and 2002, in gneisses, granitic and diorite rocks. The paper outlines an adaptation of the NTH fracture classification used during the geological logging of this tunnel. The NTH fracture classification was primarily applied to assess discontinuity spacing for tunnel support requirement decision-making. The paper includes some general comparison of NTH classes with overall penetration rate.

The paper contains the results of the physical and mathematical simulations (based on the finite elements simulation) of the length and shape influence on the mechanical strength of the brex. INTRODUCTION Extruded briquettes (BREX) exhibit a set of unique properties when compared with briquettes formed by alternative methods. Brex generally have sufficient integrity right after extrusion to withstand the necessary handling and stockpiling and does not require any special means and tools for the green briquettes strength conservation. In a typical die without an ancillary cutting device green brex tend to have very high length to diameter (L/D) or length to section area ratios. For round hole dies the brex are typically 5to 6 times the diameters and even longer. Stiff-extrusion allows also for the very easy changing of the forming dies. Dies with different cross-sectional shapes of the brex (round, ovals, square, hollow structures and many other two dimensional shapes) are possible, and common. The results of our investigations show how these geometrical shape factors contribute to overall quality of the brex both in terms of strength and as new charge components in metallurgical furnaces and processes [2-4]

The need/wish to sequestrate CO2is based on the assumption of the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), that CO2 maybe the major driver in climatic changes, i.e. especially the anthropogenic CO2emissions due to the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas will increase the atmospheric CO2-content, which will lead to higher temperatures in the atmosphere. The 0.03% CO2in the atmosphere have a 22% share of the natural greenhouse gas effect of 33 K necessary for life on earth. The main share of 62% has the water vapour in the atmosphere. Only if one concentrates on the greenhouse gas effect of the gases beside water vapour, CO2 becomes most important with 58% influence. In addition there are other influences on the climate like: • Eccentricity of earth’s orbit, precession of orbital plane, obliquity and precession of earth’s rotation axis (Milankovitch’s theory) • Sunspots and magnetic field of the sun • Changing streams in the ocean • Volcanic activities • Distribution of continents on the surface of the earth • Impact of meteorites • Change of insulation by interplanetary dust [Muller, R.A. 2000] etc. To answer the question, if the CO2-content in the atmosphere has an important or exclusive influence on the earth atmospheric mean surface temperature, one should look into history. Figure 1shows the mean temperature of the atmosphere and the atmospheric CO2-content time histories 1 billion years back; no correlation can be found between them. Nevertheless a lot of countries have committed themselves to reduce their CO2-emissions.

There has been a continuous interest in chemical aids for processing Canadian oil sands by hot water extraction process since the first commercial industry operation in 1967. Several inorganic and organic chemical systems have been introduced, of which sodium hydroxide is the most widely used extraction process aid by major producers. Use of NaOH, however, results in accumulation of sodium ions in recycled water, causing higher clays dispersion and producing tailings with poor geotechnical properties that turn into mature fine tailings. This is especially true for low grade and oxidized ores, which present the greatest challenges in bitumen recovery and produce the major portion of fine tailings. In this paper, we are presenting a novel method based on use of inorganic polymers as process aids for various low grade oil sands ores. Denver flotation cell and a laboratory scale hydrotransport loop were utilized to evaluate the effect of chemical dosage and operating parameters on the processability of oil sands samples from Athabasca region. Process tailings were examined for properties such as water chemistry, suspended solids, settling rate and the ease of tailing treatments. Our results demonstrate that the use of inorganic polymers during the froth process lead to a significant improvement in bitumen recovery from low grade oil sands and can improve further tailing treatments. This offers a viable solution that can be easily incorporated into current processing facilities and deliver several operational and economical benefits. Advantages in use of inorganic polymers versus sodium hydroxide are presented in details.

This study was carried out in Ichadih to map the sulfide/gold mineralization using combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential (SP) methods. No geophysical analysis has been carried out to delineate such ore deposits in the area. Thus, the study provides a different approach for approximate location and extension of the quartz reef associated with sulfide/gold mineralization. It also provides the elementary idea for further detailed subsurface investigation in terms of geological and geophysical approach.

The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating unstable slopes along the Konkan railway in India without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw were developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3, irrespective of the actual free face, was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle was changed from 80–82 to 45–47 degrees, and possible wedge, planar and toppling failures were eliminated. No incident of rockfall and slope failure along these slopes has been observed after the stabilization.

A micro-scale investigation was carried out by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The obtained AFM images show that the surface morphology of bastnaesite changes greatly after it comes into contact with the solutions of the collectors, suggesting that all these collectors can effectively adsorb onto bastnaesite. Increasing temperature can facilitate the adsorption of oleic acid onto bastnaesite. Results from attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) also show that all of these collectors adsorb strongly onto bastnaesite, with strong absorbance spectra being detected. The ATR-FTIR results confirm those obtained by AFM. In general, hydroxamic acid collectors (HA and SHA) adsorb onto bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite.

"Strong earthquakes occur frequently in Japan, and some rock tunnels have sustained severe damages on their permanent lining. Many road tunnels, which were constructed by conventional steel arch support and timber lagging method, exist in Japan and they need risk mitigation measures against earthquakes as per our empirical knowledge. Many reinforcing measures for deformed tunnels that may be effective against earthquakes are developed; however, behaviors during earthquakes are not fully understood.In this study, static loading tests and numerical analysis, which simulate a loading condition during earthquakes, were carried out to clarify the effect of the countermeasures. The Load-bearing capacity is estimated for the tunnel structures facilitated by the installment of an inverted arch; however, a joint between inverted arch and sidewall become structural weakness. Rock bolts and carbon fiber sheets have a potential able to mitigate the risks of collapse of the lining by the forces from an earthquake.INTRODUCTIONA number of rock tunnels with no apparent unfavorable ground conditions suffered severe damage, including the collapse of their permanent lining, in large seismic events such as the Chuetsu Earthquake in 2004 (e.g., Mashimo 2005). Since these tunnels were considered to exhibit the required structural strength to survive earthquakes, studies are being carried out to clarify the mechanical behavior of tunnels during earthquakes and their damage mechanism (e.g., Kusaka et al. 2009); however, the aseismic design methodology for mountain tunnels has not yet been established.In many cases of earthquake-damaged tunnels, some defects already existed, such as improper construction and deterioration of lining concrete. Although countermeasures are usually implemented against such problems, their earthquake-resistant effect was not fully understood.In this study, static loading tests and numerical analyses to reproduce these tests were carried out assuming that a rock tunnel was affected by the earthquake to clarify the mechanism of the lining damage and the effect of the countermeasures."

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). Potassic alteration domains of greenstone belt lode gold deposits are characterized by systematic partitioning between different groups of incompatible elements, such that Al, Ga, Th, U, Ti and V are decoupled from K, Rb, Ba, Cs and Tl. The former group of elements have concentrations and interelement ratios in alteration domains which reflect host rock control, implying approximately isochemical behaviour. In contrast, K, Rb, and Ba are strongly coenriched, and linearly correlated over th4ee orders of magnitude in abundance, where K/Rb = 260, and K/Ba = 40: K/Cs (-10 ) and K/T1 (-2x10 ) are also correlated, though more weakly. Lithium abundances, and Rb/Sr ratios are erratic in altered rocks. These interelement trends, collectively, are present in deposits variously hosted by ultramafic, mafic, or felsic volcanic rocks, and sediments or granitoids.

Salt from Great Salt Lake was probably used by the Native Americans prior to the Jim Bridger Expedition to the lake in 1824-25, and was used by the region's early explorers and trappers after that time. From the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847, salt has been produced from Great Salt Lake, starting first with the collection of crude salt from along its shores, and later by boiling down the lake's brine to obtain crystalline salt. Since these early beginnings, salt production from the lake has become a substantial commercial enterprise. Since the early 1960s, research and development have led to the economic production of potassium sulfate, magnesium metal, chlorine gas, magnesium chloride products, and nutritional supplements. Many of the salt-production techniques and equipment that were developed prior to 1964 are still being used today. Sodium sulfate has been produced, but is no longer marketed. Morton Salt, Cargill Salt, and IMC Salt currently extract sodium chloride, which is precipitated during the early stages of evaporation when the brine concentration reaches saturation, or about 26 to 27 percent total dissolved solids. Magnesium Corporation of America produces magnesium metal and chlorine gas, and IMC Kalium Ogden Corporation produces potassium sulfate, as well as magnesium chloride brine and flake products. These salt, gaseous, and metallic products are processed from the sodium-chloride-saturated, high-magnesium-chloride brines, and from the potassium and magnesium salts that are precipitated from the lake brine after it has been further concentrated. One obstacle to salt production is the fluctuating level of Great Salt Lake. In 1983, the lake level began a dramatic rise from an elevation of 4,200 feet (1,280.16 m) to its historic high of 4.211.85 feet (1,283.77 m) in 1986-87 (uncorrected USGS provisional lake-level records). The State of Utah employed flood-control measures, including breaching the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway in 1984, and pumping lake water to a shallow basin west of the lake in 1987. During the high-water years, the lake's mineral-extraction industries faced many challenges including the need to raise dikes to prevent flooding of facilities, broken dikes which resulted in the inundation of solar ponds, and dealing with the lake's greatly reduced brine salinities which resulted in lower annual salt and concentrated-brine production. The years following the record-high lake levels have been a time of adaptation, innovation, and change for Great Salt Lake industries. After its solar ponds were flooded in 1986, AMAX, Inc. built a new solar-pond complex near Knolls, and used the concentrated brines from the West Pond, generated by the State's West Desert Pumping Project. Great Salt Lake Minerals built a 21-mile-long (33.8 km) open, underwater canal, called the Behrens Trench, to convey concentrated brines from a new, remote solar pond on the west side of the lake to the east side of the lake, to help increase its production of sulfate-of-potash. There were also numerous changes in corporate ownership and production-facility locations.

The MSHA prescribed method for the determination of quartz in airborne respirable-dust samples from underground coal mines is the P-7 method, a combination of low-temperature, radio-frequency ashing (LTA) and infrared analysis (IR). There is no prescribed procedure for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rock. Dispersive infrared (IR), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods are most commonly used for the analysis of quartz in powders. Several aspects of the experimental procedures, such as the preparation of the analysis sample from bulk samples, ashing techniques, scanning procedures, peak measurement location, calibration techniques, sample amounts, size consist and data interpretation, affect the results from each of the methods differently. Significant differences in analytical results obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) on the same samples are reported. All studies point to the need for reliable quartz analysis methods. In a recent research program, a procedure for preparing bulk-coal and host-rock samples for quantitative quartz analysis was developed. Further, the results from X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy for quartz content on identical samples were compared. Calibrations with pure and mixed standards were used to assess the influence of particle-size distribution, matrix and calibration on the analytical results. In this paper, several issues concerning the measurement of quartz in the samples of coal, host-rock and airborne respirable dust from mines are outlined and quantified.
