The rapid consolidation and globalization of the industry stipulates that companies are an integral part of the world economic environment. Therefore a company?s financial performance is under the pressure of operational and environmental performance. Among them special attention is paid to the social and economic background, the relationship with regulatory institutions, and the developments for environmental protection.

Resin bolt performance is dependent on the size of the resin annulus, i.e., the difference between the hole and bolt radii. The majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus of 3.175 or 4.775 mm (0.125 or 0.188 in.). Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuli of 3.175 and 2.413 mm (0.125 and 0.095 in.) resisted an average of 0.08 t/grouted mm (2.25 st/grouted in.) with no significant variation. Resin loses to simulated fractures increased as annulus size decreased.

From the experience of the authors on recent large infrastructure Design-Build projects this paper reviews major lessons for Contractors and Owners in the delivery of large Design-Build infrastructure projects and some major pitfalls and warnings to both Owners and Contractors. The paper is written from both the Design and Construction perspective. A case history is presented that details the approach employed to ensure a quality project consistent from the initial design phase through construction and outlines the strategy used to guide the Design-Build process to an acceptable completion. Suggestions are made for Contractors and Owners for handling the Design and the Construction elements of Design-Build contracts.

The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District has implemented a billion-dollar interceptor system master plan, including the 31 km (19 mile) long Lower Northwest Interceptor (LNWI). For the two LNWI Sacramento River crossings, pipe-jack/micro tunnel drives in excess of 300 meters (1,000 ft) from 30 meter (100 ft) deep shafts in mixed soil conditions below the water table were considered, as were600 meter (2,000 ft) tunnel drives utilizing pressurized-face tunnel boring machines. Operation and maintenance concerns, predicted flood scour, and levee concerns are discussed. A risk assessment process was used to select both profile and construction method. Construction will begin in mid 2004.

The ultimate recovery in a heap leaching operation is related to the degree of exposure of the valuable minerals in comminuted particles. Recently, high-resolution cone beam x-ray microtomography (XMT) has been used to determine this parameter. XMT technology consists of examining the extent of mineral exposure for each size fraction of ore in 3D, then, by algebraic calculations, the ultimate recovery can be estimated for different particle size distributions (PSD). To confirm the usefulness of the XMT technology for mineral exposure analysis, column tests were performed to determine ultimate recovery using three PSDs for two composites obtained from the copper heap leaching operation at Zaldivar-Chile.

We present a review of research and development for coal based clean energy systems aiming for zero emissions to the atmosphere. These systems can utilize all kinds of coal or other solid carbon sources such as tar sands as well as liquid hydrocarbons. The chemical energy of carbon is transferred to hydrogen and used in power generation, in fuel cells, or hydrogen combusting turbines. The waste products of these future power-generating systems are ash, sulfur compounds and CO2. We also summarize current and developing technologies for processing of CO2to produce mineral carbonates for permanent disposal, and associated byproducts.

Direct mineral carbonation was investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO2, into a geologically stable final form. The process utilizes a slurry of water, with bicarbonate and salt additions, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg2SiO4) or serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4]. Carbon dioxide is dissolved into this slurry, resulting in dissolution of the mineral and precipitation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Optimum results were achieved using heat-pretreated serpentine feed material and a high partial pressure of CO2 (Pc02). Specific conditions include 155°C, PC02 = 185 atm and 15% solids. Under these conditions, a 78% conversion of the silicate to the carbonate was achieved in 30 minutes. Process mineralogy was utilized to investigate the appropriate feed characteristics, identify the process products and interpret the mineral dissolution and carbonate precipitation reaction paths. MULSIM/NL and La Model are displacement-discontinuity programs which have been used quite successfully in the past to provide detailed structural models of various single and multiple-seam mining situations. However, both of these programs required fairly complex details of the mine plan and topography to be manually input into the program, often taking several days of work. Recently, automatic mine and topographic grid generation capabilities have been added to the MULSIM/NL and La Model programs, reducing the input time requirements from days to hours. This paper discusses the algorithms used for the automatic grid generation and demonstrates the utility of the new capabilities with a case study.

The Illinois State Geological Survey added Minerals Processing to its capabilities in 1966. Subsequently, the Minerals Processing Team and several Geologists collectively thought what neither would have thought of separately. The results included a number of projects. discussed here are: 1) The Utilization of the Fines from Kitty Litter as a Bonding Agent for Iron Ore Pellets; 2) Separating Plant Waste from a Commercial Silica Sand Producer into two marketable products, including a closely sized Silica Sand; 3) Marketable Feldspar Sand and Silica Sand from Dune Sands near the Kankakee River; and 4) A Method for Making Metallurgical Grade Fluorspar more desirable as Blast Furnace (Steel) Feed.

NIOSH is conducting research to reduce the silica dust exposure of workers at surface coal mines. One goal of this research is to evaluate the relationship between drilling parameters, rock strata and silica dust generation. This study involved measuring blast hole emission dust from a rotary drill rig which required sampling high concentration dust (>400 mg/m3) for silica content in a high velocity airstream. To measure dust initially, traditional sampling methods using personal sampling instruments were attempted in and around the shroud area of the drill with no success. Variations in the dust cloud concentrations under the shroud, the condition of the shroud and its orientation over the hole, and ambient air conditions prevented consistent and accurate dust measurements from being obtained. Amore consistent dust cloud is necessary for accurate measurements. An area of the drill’s dust collector system that consistently draws the emitted airborne dust from the hole is the collector tube. This tube connects the drill collector’s vacuum and dust filtration system to the shroud area. Assuming the collector system is working as designed, sampling from the collector tube would enable more consistent and accurate samples to be taken. However, current personal samplers are unable to sample in the concentrations and velocities experienced in the collector tube, so another method had to be devised. To achieve the desired results, an in-stack cascade cyclone was used. Preliminary field testing shows positive results.

The advantages of quantitative environmental risk assessment techniques over the more commonly used qualitative approach is widely accepted. One important parameter related to the level of risk is the extent and geographic spread of pollutants. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide a powerful and highly flexible tool that increases the sophistication of the risk assessment methodology. Through spatial representation, the estimated risk becomes more comprehensive, thus facilitating the decision making process. In addition, valuable qualitative information can be incorporated into the risk assessment procedure with the help of GIS. This paper illustrates a methodology for quantifying risks posed to human health, by exposure to contaminated land, in a manner, which gives a measure of the uncertainty in the assessment and preserves the spatial distribution of the risks. The case study utilised to illustrate the methodology is a large industrial area around a number of decommissioned minerals production and processing sites with known high heavy metal loads at Lavrio, Greece. The spatial distribution of Pb concentration in soils was derived from 425 soil samples collected over a total area of 120 km2. Indicator kriging was used to quantify the spatial distribution of the risk and related uncertainty and the results displayed in map form using GIS.

Borates are minerals that contain boron. Trace amounts exist in rocks, soil, water and people. Boron-containing ores are rare and U.S. Borax, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Borax, controls one of the world’s two world-class borate deposits. Through its global systems of mines, refineries, ports, sales offices and distribution centers, the company supplies nearly 45 percent of the world’s demand for borates. Borax has been mining borates in California for more than a century. This year the company celebrated 131 years of continuous business in the Golden State and 76 years at its operations in Boron, the site of California’s largest openpit mine. It also has mines and refineries in Argentina, refineries and ship-ping facilities in Europe and technical staff in the United States, North and South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. So, with the 130±years of borate mining and processing experience behind it as well as its global marketing and distribution centers, there is very little that Borax does not know about borates.

Twenty years ago, when tunnel projects in the UK were generally procured by the public sector, many were completed late and over budget. Now a significant proportion of new infrastructure is developed by the private sector. Seeking more certainty in cost and programme, promoters have tried new and radically different methods of procurement and contract forms. The paper will review these developments, then examine the approach adopted for some of the largest current UK tunnelling projects (both in the public and private sectors) including the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the Heathrow Terminal 5 Development and new highway tunnels.

Timely and efficient conversion from traditional to sustainable development of mineral resources requires that managers, engineers and other mineral industry professionals become familiar with the related techniques and methods. To fill this need the online Master of Engineering program has been developed at University of Missouri-Rolla. Designed primarily for mature students with an engineering or science background this program allows for specialization in several areas of sustainable development of earth resources. To accommodate mineral industry professionals working in remote locations all courses constituting the program can be taken online, without the need to attend the classes in person. The paper describes the program and discusses the experience gained during the first two years of program offering.

Specific software tools for Statistical Multivariate Analysis combined with real time process data were applied to Concentrator Plant at Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi SCM in Chile, basically to two Mill Lines, each one with one SAG mill (32’x15’8MW)and one Ball mill (22’x36’9.7MW). The main objective was to empower the operator actions using process patterns references instead of process variable set-points. Pattern clustering and the analysis of pattern deviations regarding normal or desired pattern, allows for improvements in process control and the further implementation of soft sensors for those variables not included in the initial model.

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micrometer-range particles that form pastelike, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake flow control structure that allows expressed liquid, from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned to the liquid pool while maintaining a high-solids throughput. To provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (i.e., feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids and slurry type), the cake flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at a zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in solids dryness and solids throughput. Iron ore pellets use bentonite clay as binder at dosages from 0.5to 1.0% (10 to 20 pounds per ton) of moist iron ore concentrate. Bentonite is typically shipped hundreds of miles from Wyoming to the Lake Superior iron ore district. It is therefore best to know how effective a bentonite will be before it is shipped and used to bind concentrate into pellets. Current tests of bentonite effectiveness include: plate water absorption, methylene blue uptake, free swell, exchangeable cations, and glycolated layer expansion. However, these tests have many disadvantages: First, they only measure the ability of a bentonite to expand, disperse, or absorb, not how well it will bond. Second, most of the tests require up to 20 hours to perform. Bentonite only has a few minutes to interact within the concentrate before it is indurated (sintered). These long-term tests may not reflect the true behavior of bentonite. Third, the tests are tedious and often results are inconsistent between different iron ore concentrates, labs, and technicians. Fourth, some of the testing equipment is difficult to procure. Fifth, procedures are often difficult to standardize. In this paper, the Binder Effectiveness Strength (BESt) test to evaluate binders for iron ore pellets is presented that: measures the ability of bentonite to bond, requires only about two hours to complete, is simple and reproducible, and utilizes readily available equipment that has been standardized for decades.

The Cross City Tunnel comprises 2km of a new underground traffic route in Sydney, Australia. The route is very complex, involving some six separate tunnels and three underground Y-junctions. For almost 200m the six tunnels run parallel at different level sunder William Street, Sydney. Almost all of the route runs adjacent to the City Business District of Sydney and adjacent to or below many major buildings and services. The planning and design of this project is described. The geometric arrangement is achieved with a strong dependence on 3D road design packages. Road alignment constraints include land acquisition and proximity to existing tunnels and basements as well as maintaining separation from the other tunnels in the scheme. Geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are described. Findings discussed include the high horizontal stress field in the Sydney area and investigation of incised palaeochannels on the route. Methods of design for the tunnels and Y-junctions are described, as well as methods of settlement prediction for the buildings and services. The latter includes the settlement assessment for more than 200 buildings, many in excess of 20 storeys, as well as services including all of the city railway lines in Sydney.

The marble deposits of Yule Creek were first discovered in the late1870s. Minor quarrying occurred between that discovery and the early 1900s. Major development occurred in 1905, when Channing Meek, with some help from the Rockefellers, raised $3 million to develop the Colorado Yule Marble Quarry. That is $50 million in today’s dollars. Some of the words used to describe the marble deposit were “gigantic, remarkable, flawless and immense.” Boosters proclaimed, “The marble age is here.” Obviously, dreams were big for Marble.

Fine coal is substantially more costly to process than coarse coal because of technical difficulties associated with separating fine particles and removing process water from both clean coal and refuse. Therefore, companies are often forced to discard coal fines to waste impoundments. According to a recent report published by National Research Council, the U.S. coal industry is discarding 70-90 million tons of coal fines annually to 713 active impoundments, most of which are located in Central Appalachia. On October 11, 2000, a 72-acre impoundment near Inez, Kentucky, accidentally released 250 million gallons of coal slurry into nearby underground mines, creeks, rivers, and schoolyards, thereby creating serious environ-mental concerns. Fortunately, recent advances in separation technologies make it possible to recover fine coal more efficiently from existing coal preparation plants and from waste streams previously discarded to impoundments. The availability of these new technologies allows companies to increase profitability and minimize environmental risks, which are conducive for achieving sustainable mining.
