Since 1984, nitrogen-species catalyzed pressure leaching has been utilized at the Sunshine Mining and Refining Company for the recovery of precious metals from a refractory sulfide concentrate, The process operates without the use of cyanide. The plant is now the only industrial-scale commercial application of this technology. Since the inception of the process, changes have been implemented to improve efficiencies and throughputs. Two of these changes, the replacement of nitric acid by sodium nitrite and a concentrate regrind, have recently been implemented. This paper will discuss the outcomes of these recently patented plant-process changes. In particular, a comparison between the previously used method and the new leach method is made. Also discussed is the potential applicability of the process to other materials. A companion publication (Anderson, Harrison and Keys, 1996) indicates possible mechanisms responsible for the success of these process changes.

The Inter-Island Tunnel is a 7.7 kilometer (25,160 foot) long by 3.5 meter (11.5 feet) diameter concrete lined tunnel through the Cambridge formation below Boston Harbor. Constructed as part of the Boston Harbor Project, this tunnel will bring untreated wastewater from the MWRA’s South System headworks facility at Nut Island in Quincy, MA to the new Deer Island treatment plant. A myriad of problems delayed the construction of the tunnel. These problems included salt water inflows of over 22,000 liters (5,812 gallons) per minute, a major fire in the access shaft, weak rock and soil collapsing on the tunnel boring machine, and hand mining operations.

A general form of pore pressure in a saturated porous medium, which is subject to external forces it has the pressurization of a borehole in hydraulic fracturing, is derived. The pore pressure consists of two parts: the preexisting initial pore pressure and the pressure induced by fluid flow due to the pressure difference caused by pressurizing the borehole The initial pore pressure associates with the effective stresses in the stress, fields of crustal stresses and a thick hollow cylinder subjected to internal and external pressures. The pure pressure weaned by fluid flow is implied in Biot's (1941) constitutive equation for three-dimensional consolidation and proved to be the exact effective pore pressure (Nur and Byerlee, 1971). Using this general form of pore pressure, a general poroelastic model for hydraulic-fracturing breakdown (fracture-initiation) pressure was derived. This model was validated by laboratory experimental results on Indiana limestone. Three sets of tests were conducted under the conditions of preexisting pore pressures of 6, 21 and 28 MPa, respectively. The equal horizontal (confining) pressures applied in the tests ranged from 6 to 60 MPa. Hainison and Fairhurst's (1967) model appear to be applicable to rocks having microcracks or flows. Experimental results of fracture reopening pressures on Indiana limestone supported this assertion. The test results also demonstrated that, when the pressure difference between the confining and the initial pore pressure grows larger than 14 to 21 MPa, the breakdown pressures agree well with the general poroelastic model developed in this paper. This indicates that the developed model will be superior when hydrofacturing stress measurements are conducted at great depth.

The paper deals with highly efficient dust collecting systems of the 10-600 type which constitute new generation installations de- signed to eliminate dust hazard in headings driven with roadheaders. A vortex ventube controlling the air flow in the com- bined ventilation system by means of air vortex generated by the ventube drive unit is also presented. From the results of measurements of under-roof concentrations of methane it appears that the application of the vortex ventube makes it possible to decrease the under-roof accumulation of methane more than 10 times.

The Inland System supplies raw water to the industrial and domestic users in the City of Birmingham, Alabama. The Inland System, which is nearly 60 years old, consists of an approximately 57.9m (190 feet) high earthen dam across the Blackburn Fork of the Black Warrior River, a 39.6m (130 feet) high reinforced concrete intake structure, a 1524mm (60inch) diameter Dresser coupled steel transmission pipeline, and various distribution lines extending into Birmingham. The Inland System was owned, operated and maintained by the Industrial Water Board (IWB) of the City of Birmingham, an agency of the city government, from 1958 until 1994. In 1994, the City of Birmingham consolidated all water and distribution functions under the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB). In 1988, the IWB determined that the Inland System had reached a point where its reliability could not be assured without an in-depth evaluation and renovation. The IWB engaged Christy/Cobb, Inc. (CCI) of Birmingham as its consultant for the renovation work. CCI evaluated the Inland System and submitted a report to the IWB in April, 1992. The report contained several recommendations for capital improvements to the system including increasing the emergency spillway capacity, reconstructing the fuse plug, relocating public access to the lake away from the dam area, constructing a new intake structure, and constructing a tunnel through the dam abutment to deliver the water from the proposed intake structure to the existing 1524mm (60 inch) diameter supply line. The new intake structure and tunnel would provide for a future maximum demand flow rate as well as provide bypass and level control capabilities. CCI was authorized in 1992 to proceed with the engineering design for the renovation of the Inland System with emphasis on the spillway and intake structure. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The major component of the renovation of the Inland System was the new intake structure and tunnel through the dam abutment. CCI engaged Jenny Engineering Corporation (JEC) of Springfield, New Jersey as a consultant for the tunnel design. JEC was responsible for the design of the tunnel, the connecting shaft between the intake structure and tunnel, and the steel pipe final lining, while CCI was responsible for the intake structure and the connection to the existing supply pipeline as well as overall project management. CCI and JEC evaluated the project site in order to select the location for the new intake structure and set the alignment for the tunnel. A factor in the evaluation process was that the level of the lake could not be lowered to construct the new intake structure since the supply of water from the Inland System had to maintained. A multiyear program involving online, in-vessel exposures at Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI) has provided information and experience about the materials and designs for brickwork linings in pressure oxidation autoclaves. A variety of brick and mortar products was evaluated. Properties before and after exposure were used to document the performance. Some benefits include the development of a new silicate mortar, a better understanding of brick requirements and increased autoclave operating time between maintenance shutdowns. BGMI operates six pressure oxidation autoclaves at its Eureka County, NV gold operation. These autoclave process 15.8 k/ld (17,500 stpd) of gold ore. Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the six autoclave circuits. The gold ore is refractory, in which the gold particles are mineralogically encapsulated on a micro- and submicroscopic level. The autoclaves are 4.4- m- (14-ft-) diam and 26 m (85 ft) long (tip-to-tip). Inside of each is a full brickwork (brick plus mortar) lining that divides the vessel into five compartments. Each compartment has a motor-driven agitator that keeps the slurry suspended and disperses the oxygen to enhance reaction. During autoclave operation, the conditions are steady state at 210° to 232° C (410° to 450° F) and 61 to 62 kPa (420-430 psi). As shown in Fig. 1, there are other accessory vessels (splash and flash towers) in the autoclave circuits that are also brickwork-lined. The linings used to date, other than small test sections, have all been acid-resistant fireclay bricks, bonded with alkali silicate mortar, PbO- based mortar and/or vinyl ester mortar, but mainly alkali silicate mortar.

In terms of their hydrogeology, most open pit mines can be divided into three categories. There are mines that occur above the water table, mines that extend below the water table in high permeability rocks and mines that extend below the water table in low permeability, tight formations. Mines that occur above the water table do not experience major ground water seepage. It may some- times be necessary to construct in-pit trenches and sumps to remove water from precipitation. But dewatering or enhanced drainage measures are typically not required. Open pits that extend below the water table in high permeability rocks find it cost-effective to pump from dewatering wells. This is done to lower the water table below the working pit floors, creating dry or depressurized conditions in advance of mining. If the rocks in the mining area are homogenous, complete drainage of the entire mining area may be achievable by pumping from wells. In this case, it is not necessary to consider drain- age enhancement. However, there are many open pits and excava- [ ] tions that can lower the water table using conventional wells, but for which drainage enhancement is also an integral part of the dewatering system. The Sleeper Mine in Nevada is an example of this. Hydraulic layering at Sleeper has prevented downward drainage of water as the main water table is lowered. In addition, there are many mines that have areas of low permeability wall rocks that do not freely drain as the surrounding water table is lowered. Ground water seepage also creates difficulties in mines that occur below the water table but for which lowering of the water table using conventional wells is not feasible because of the overall low permeability of the rocks. The volumes of water involved may be small. However, it is necessary to deal with all of the water inside the pit as mining proceeds. It is not possible to dissipate pore pressures in the wall rocks in advance of excavation.

This project took a watershed approach in the evaluation of water-quality impacts from past mining activities and current restoration projects in the Bear Butte Creek basin, a small and well defined drainage in a heavily mineralized area of the northern Black Hills. The basin contains numerous inactive and abandoned mines as well as a currently active heap-leach surface gold mine. Bear Butte Creek normally loses all of its discharge to sinkholes in the Madison Limestone aquifer and thus can affect the water quality of this regionally important water resource. Water-quality data were analyzed, stream surveys were conducted, and two abandoned mine restoration projects were monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of the watershed approach and to identify practical remediation techniques that could be applied to other watersheds. A geographic information system (GIS) was developed to organize information on stream quality, abandoned mine locations, and other geologic and hydrologic data. The watershed approach toward assessing and reclaiming abandoned mines appears to be effective when compared to a point-source approach that might improve water quality at specific sites but not result in significant overall improvement to the watershed because of adjacent sources.

I have spent my entire life in the mining industry pursuing what I believed was an honorable profession that provided products that were critical for our social and economic well being. Now I am told that all of my efforts been for nothing and that I have been doing something morally wrong - mining. This view of the future is not one that the mining industry has to allow to unfold. A determining factor in how things will turn out is continued improvement of the industry's environmental performance. To some extent, the current state of affairs in the United States is a result of the common perception that greedy corporations (usually foreign) are somehow ripping off US citizens of their native birthright or natural treasures in the name of corporate profits. Implicit in this view is the belief that corporations will take shortcuts or violate the environment in the name of profits. I have 26 years of experience in working in the copper, uranium and gold industries. Profits during those years were meager and difficult to find (Fig. 1). In fact, when I began working fresh out of college, I chose copper, which was then selling at around $1/lb. By the time I left copper mining, it was selling for 45 cents/lb. I then moved to uranium, which was selling for $52/lb. By the time I left it was $16/lb. I finally picked gold, which was then at ($650/oz). There is a whole generation of engineers, geologists and professionals who have spent two decades downsizing, closing mines, improving costs and getting smarter about how the mining industry does what it does. The environment, health and safety are areas where there have been great improvement. There are five characteristics of corporate governance that are critical for a company to develop and an industry to embrace if environmental, health and safety excellence is to reach new heights in the labor pool.

A packed column jig has been developed for sharp separation of fine particles--150 down to 1 micron--having different densities. The packed jig is a column filled with corrugated packing. A slurry of mixed particles is fed into the middle of the column. Water enters near the bottom of the column as both a steady state and a pulsating flow. The pulsating water sets up a jigging action that interacts with the packing causing the dense particles to sink and exit the bottom of the jig and the lighter particles to rise and exit the top of the packed jig. The result is a sharp, environmentally friendly, gravity separation machine with low operating costs. Grades and recoveries of iron ore exceed that of known devices. Grades as high as 95 percent purity with concomitantly high recoveries are common for iron ore concentration. Low silica, sulfur and phosphate are common. This paper is the first to unveil the packed column jig technology in detail and presents its physical model with performance data. The purification of iron ores and coal is the paper's focus.

The historic Getchell property is currently being mined from the Getchell Main Underground workings, a foot wall extension of the Getchell open pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is currently under development via two vertical shafts. Together, the two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 3,200 tpd mill/autoclave circuit, taking Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 200,000 ounces (Au) per annum, to over 400,000 ounces (Au) per annum by 1999.

INTRODUCTION Controlled ground freezing for mining and construction applications has been in use for over a century. Despite the great technological evolution which has occurred during this period, ground freezing is still used on projects today with much the same basic technology as that used originally over 100 years ago. Major developments have occurred in the separate fields of frozen soil mechanics, refrigeration, and heat transfer analysis. However, except for a few projects in Europe and Asia, these developments have not been combined to upgrade ground freezing techniques to their potential level. In view of this situation, it is believed desirable to examine the art of ground freezing in light of recent technical developments, together with highlights on some of the apparent advantages, disadvantages and economics of the various alternative approaches. The purpose of this paper is to attempt such an examination, with particular emphasis on the practical application of presently available technology. GENERAL ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Ground freezing may be used in any soil or rock formation, regardless of structure, grain size or permeability; however, it is best suited to soft ground rather than rock conditions. Freezing may be used for any size, shape or depth of excavation and the same physical plant can be used from job to job despite wide variation in these factors.

Dynatec Mining Contractors (Dynatec) entered into a contract with Barrick Goldstrike Mines (Barrick) to develop the deep gold ore reserves at the Meikle Mine north of Carlin, Nevada. The Ventilation and Production Shafts were started in early 1994 and were completed in December, 1995. The mine development and mine construction programs were completed in November, 1996. This paper describes the Meikle Mine development program.

Flotation recovery of molybdenite particles finer than 15 micrones sharpy decreases with decreasing size. A totally hydrophobic latex agglomerant (UBC-1), which was previously reported to be very efficient in agglomerating hydrophobic fine coal, has been found to agglomerate fine molybdenite particles. The agglomeration takes place only in the presence of MIBC which is commonly used as a frother in molybdenite flotation. Adsorption tests confirmed that MIBC is adsorbed onto molybdenite. The effect of the agglomeration on flotation has been studied by floating fine molybdenite from mixtures with quartz using the UBC-l agglomerant and the MIBC frother. A significant improvement in the flotation of fine molybdenite has been observed in the presence of the UBC-l agglomerant. The best results have been obtained around pH 5.5 which corresponds to the iso-electric-point of molybdenite.

New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland dominate Australian black coal production and exports. NSW produced 86 Mt (95 million st) of saleable coal in 1994, a doubling of output since 1980. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has driven this growth. This high Asian demand is expected to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. History The history of the New South Wales (NSW) coal industry can be traced to 1797 when coal was first taken from Newcastle to Sydney (Ellis, 1969). At that time, NSW was a British colony, independent from the other colonies, such as Victoria and Queensland. Australia, as a federation of colonies, did not exist until 1901. The Newcastle coal industry grew through the 1800s in line with the growth of the colonies. Several events spurred demand for Newcastle coal. These included: ? The NSW and Victorian gold rushes of the 1850s and associated population growth. ? The development of steamship traffic at the expense of sail. ? The development of railways and town gas supplies. By 1900, Australia was producing 6.4 Mt (7 million st) of coal, most of it from NSW. By then, NSW had established strong export markets in Indonesia, China, Japan and New Zealand. The history of energy consumption is marked by continual competition, changing intensity of use and substitution. From 1900 to 1940, the Queensland, Victorian and Indonesian coal industries developed at the expense of NSW exports. Similarly, New Zealand developed its hydroelectric industry and thus declined as the largest customer for NSW coal. Oil replaced steam in the shipping and railway markets and electricity replaced gas for lighting. Industrial efficiencies also affected coal. Between 1928 and 1938, coal consumed in generating power fell from by 17% on a kilowatt hour basis and, during the same period, the amount of gas produced per ton of coal rose by 18% (Shaw and Bruno). Faced with these pressures, production and exports stagnated. By 1941, Australian black coal production was 14.2 Mt (15.6 million st). NSW's production was 11.7 Mt (12 million st), up only 19% from 1912. Exports had virtually ceased (Fig. 1). In such circumstances, the industry had lost focus. INTRODUCTION Several recent estimates have predicted that the extent of underground tunneling in the future will far surpass past records. It is also emphasized that the expected increase depends largely on the cost of tunneling and hence every effort should be made to reduce this price. The largest items of expense in some tunneling programs are not related to the technical problems encountered but rather the human factors involved in contracting and executing the project. In order to examine the mutual interactions between the groups involved in tunnel programs, the Engineering Foundation sponsored a conference on "Owner-Engineer-Contractor Relations in Tunneling", July 12-16, 1971 at Deerfield, Massachusetts. The meeting was cosponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America and the Construction Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The seminar was attended by representatives of contractors, owners, and engineers who drafted and approved a set of recommendations based on the ideas generated during the discussions. It was also suggested that the resulting document be given as wide publicity as possible amongst the underground construction community. The First Annual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference provides an excellent forum for this presentation.

One of the major criterion of any mechanised tunnelling operation is to minimize downtime of the tunnelling machine by employing the most efficient muck handling system space and economic factors permit. A tunnelling machine which remains idle during a large percentage of the available shift working time is a luxury no contractor can afford. There are several possible reasons for non-productivity of a tunnelling machine ... the inability of the muck handling system to keep pace with the tunnelling machine on a continuous basis is one major cause. In large diameter tunnels, where several trains or more than one muck hauling unit can operate simultaneously, downtime of the tunnelling machine may be kept to an acceptable level. On small to medium diameter tunnels, 8 feet to 14 feet in diameter, the muck removal support system is normally restricted in capacity, resulting in an excessive tunnelling machine downtime as the tunnel extends from the shaft. There is a need for an efficient, continuous and economical muck removal system for small to medium size tunnels being driven by a hard rock machine. This paper is intended to provide an insite into pneumatic conveying, and explain the Radmark System; its development and utilisation in the tunnelling and mining fields. This paper summarizes the current research trends in the ventilation design for the construction of very long tunnels, and presents the results of leakage flow measurements in three auxiliary ventilation systems. The study includes an estimation of an important design parameter, namely, the leakage path resistance, and a discussion of its effects on the overall efficiency of a ventilation system. A sample problem is used to illustrate the calculations.

When mining coal, the occurrence of high methane liberation rates can often overwhelm the existing ventilation capabilities of the working place and result in elevated levels of methane gas. These “gas-off/stand-by condition" events often limit the production of the section and increase the potential opportunity for the occurrence of an ignition. This paper investigates the potential effectiveness of using a continuous miner equipped with an integral dust scrubber which was modified to provide high flow rates to reduce these events during active coal mining. Work was undertaken to quantify various adaptations of the mining system, by simulating site parameters in the controlled environment of an instrumented "full-scale" test facility. Monitoring (in real-time) of velocities and gas concentrations at many fixed points was also undertaken in an attempt to learn the effective limits of the system at high release volumes of gas.

Flotation columns and their variations are increasingly replacing conventional cells in mineral-processing circuits. While the operational characteristics of columns differ from those of conventional cells, the same scale-up methodologies are being employed. This practice may be attributed to a poor understanding of the factors that control throughput. The use of tall flotation columns is frequently justified because of the need for an increased particle residence time. However, it is shown that longer particle residence times alone do not translate into increased recoveries. In this paper, throughput data from several industrial flotation-column installations is presented. Also, an attempt is made at using dimensional analysis to provide a scale-up methodology for the factors controlling column throughput.
