The plate tectonic setting, regional geology, and certain aspects of the economic geology of the iron-rare-earth-nio-bium ore bodies at Bayan Obo, Inner Mongolia, China, were studied by a team of geologists from the Tianjin Geologic Research Academy and the U.s. Geological Survey between 1987 and 1989. These ore bodies were formed by hydrothermal replacement of Middle Proterozoic dolomite in an intracontinental rift setting. A variety of veins and/or dikes that have a carbonatite-like mineralogy cut the footwall clastic rocks and migmatites. A stockwork of veins occurs at several locations in the footwall. The hanging wall is a shale that has been converted to a K-metasomatite and has microcrystalline potassium feldspar as its principal constituent. This shale served as a sealing caprock that contained the chemical solutions that reacted with the dolomite and that created the enormous concentration of mineralized rock in an 18-kilometer-long syncline. The rocks that host these ore bodies and the associated mineralized areas occur today as roof pendants in granitoid rocks of Pennian age that were emplaced during a continent-to-continent collision during that period.

Elemental sulfur is founded to be the predominant sulfur-containing species in a leaching residue resulting from ferric chloride leaching, under given conditions, of a chalcopyrite concentrate. The mineralogical study of the leaching residue which consists of 52% elemental sulfur reveals that the sulfur formed at the end of leaching process is in the form of discrete crystal rather than coating film. Flotation has been applied to recover the sulfur successfully using xanthate as a collector. Dispersants arc needed to prevent the mechanical entrapment of silicate and quartz by sulfur. Very high recovery of sulfur with satisfactory grades can be achieved with a relatively simple notation scheme.

Under normal conditions, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. In order to reduce this pyrite recovery, it is first necessary to determine the primary recovery mechanism, as different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked-particle flotation, or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented which suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not the major mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite, and that the bulk of the recovered pyrite is there either as a result of simple entrainment or by being physically locked with floatable coal particles.

Over the past few years the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory's staff designed, built, tested and proved the necessary hardware, software and methodology of tracer gas based surveying techniques applied in the field of mine ventilation. These methods are now used routinely in a variety of applications where traditional anemometric methods do not provide the required accuracies or cannot be effectively employed. Irregular or highly turbulent flows, leakages, geometrically complicated or highly obstructed airways are just a few examples where traditional anemometry can produce unacceptable errors in calculated ventilation parameters. Tracer gas based ventilation techniques have been used in many problematic situations where the standard ventilation methods are inadequate. One such problem, faced by many mine operators, is the emergency imposed by the ever present threat of a mine fire. An understanding of the propagation of smoke contaminants and the demonstrated integrity of appointed escape routes can save lives and property during a fire. That knowledge can be gained quickly and inexpensively by the application of tracer gas smoke simulation methods. The concept of controlled air recirculation has recently gained considerable attention in the mining industry. While mathematical models can be used to predict performance, the ultimate proof of a ventilation system's performance can best be provided by a tracer gas based simulation of contaminant levels. Fan performance tests and assessment of auxiliary ventilation systems are highly dependent on accurate definition of airflows; precise data can be easily obtained by tracer gas based volumetric surveys. Editor's note: The subject of mining on the moon can generate a wide range of strongly held opinion, from those leaning toward the view that, ultimately, such activity is the destiny of mankind to those who believe that all suggestions for moon mining to date are unrealistic, wildly expensive and in the hands of people who 'know nothing.' MINING ENGINEERING herewith publishes some of the basic pros and cons on the subject of moon mining by writers who are among those holding strong views on the subject, with the hope that some of our readers may be interested in joining this debate. Every mineralogist and most mineral industry people were keenly interested in the examinations of the first moon rocks brought back by US astronauts in 1969. Suffice to say that the examinations revealed nothing exotic in the mineral makeup of the very limited rock samples. The rocks were generally of igneous type, dark-colored and contained some common, Earth-type minerals. There was, in Earth terms, above average TiO2 content, but they contained nothing of commercial significance by Earth standards. Therefore, interest in moon minerals rapidly faded. Years later, on Sunday, May 4, 1986, living in Reno, NV, this author was shocked to read a local newspaper article by the Dean of the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, headlined, "Moon Mining Not Far Off." The extensive use of heavy-duty diesel engines in underground mines has raised concerns about the potential adverse health effects to miners exposed to diesel particulate matter (DPM) which contains mutagenic and carcinogenic organic compounds. The purpose of this study was to compare the levels of DPM, biological activity, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) attributable to diesel engines in underground coal mines and similar data collected in engine laboratory facilities to assess whether laboratory data could be used to predict in-mine levels of diesel emissions. Mean in-mine DPM and SOF concentrations varied from 0.90 to 1.9 mg/m3 and 0.08 to 0.40 mg/m3, respectively. DPM-associated mutagenicity (mean) levels at two of the mines varied from 400 to 970 revertants/m3. Concentations of three PAH differed by up to four-fold between two of the mines, largely reflecting differences in DPM and SOF levels. The laboratory raw exhaust data were divided by 100 to obtain expected or predicted values for in-mine concentrations. The predicted DPM, SOF, mutagenicity, and PAH values based on laboratory samples were not significantly different from many of the in-mine values. Using a potential in-mine dilution ratio range of 20 to 200:1, virtually all in-mine data fell within the predicted range. Therefore, an estimate of in-mine concentrations can be determined by evaluating laboratory data. This will allow for extrapolations from laboratory tests with particulate emission control devices to assess potential health-related benefits due to their in-mine use.

This paper describes practical applications of lineal" programming techniques to help in the planning of production, transportation and shipments at different coal mines. The models are being used by Cyprus Coal Company in eastern and western operations to plan coal production, economic dispatching and blending over variable time horizons. In addition, where a preparation plant exists, the models establish the amount of washing required to meet specific coal sales qualities. The emphasis on this paper is on model development and implementation together with a system to track coal flow and qualities, either raw from the mines to the loading facilities 01" processed through a preparation plant.

During the production of silicon carbide, a byproduct is generated that contains a mixture of crystalline and amorphous silicon carbide. Utilizing the difference in density, shape, and surface properties of the crystalline and amorphous silicon carbide, separation tests were carried out with gravity concentration. The processing of the coarse fraction of the silicon carbide mixture by jigs resulted in a high grade crystalline SiC concentrate with the desired specifications. The separation was largely influenced by the shape factor. A jig with a newly designed hydraulic drive was used to carry out the test program.

Flowsheet improvements, such as series/parallel SX plant configurations, discontinuation of plant sumps and improved filter pumping concepts, the use of in-settler baffle systems, and the Krebs and combined mixer-settler designs offer opportunities to reduce SX plant cost. Today's plants employ permanent cathodes and mechanical stripping, and the increased capital cost can be offset by labor savings and higher current densities. The wider use of HDPE and new cell construction materials also reduce capital cost. The "Portelex" type of relocatable design embodies such new, cost-saving measures in a simple basic plant. Organic inventory and losses are reduced by new, fast-settling, hybrid organic reagents with improved kinetics and selectivity.

With the passage of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) on December 29, 1970 and the formation and growth of the OSHA Agency it spawned, public consciousness of occupational safety was raised. It became accepted that employees had the right to "a safe and healthful workplace". With the possibility of OSHA inspections, employ ers (particularly those with large workforces) began to give serious con sideration to engineering controls, safety programs, and training in a more uniform manner than previously.

During 1983, 42.2% of the 686.0 (624.3 Mt) million tons of coal reported, 289.6 (263.5 Mt) million tons were mechanically cleaned, of which 107 (97.4 Mt) million tons were cleaned by dense media (magnetite and sand) processes.' The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 38% between 1938 and 1983. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that 150 million tons (137 Mt) of coal were cleaned by heavy-media processes in 1986, and that this number may increase to 265 million tons (241 Mt) by 1990.2 Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes that clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes generally offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: • Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of raw coal whose specific gravity is near the specific gravity of separation. • Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled within + 0.005 sp gr units. • Ability to handle a wide range of coal sizes. • Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. • Ability to handle fluctuations in feed, in terms of both quantity and quality. Unfortunately, dense medium processes can have the following disadvantages: • Relatively high capital costs caused primarily by the need for equipment to collect and recycle the medium. Relatively high operating costs caused primarily by operation of medium recycle equipment and loss of medium.

A joint research program between the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines and Cyprus-Yampa Valley Coal Company is being conducted at the Foidel Creek Mine, Oak Creek, Colorado. This program goal is to study the effects of state-of-the-art, high-speed, automated longwall mining on health and safety, and primarily, ground stability under various geological conditions. The Bureau installed an automated data monitoring system, known as the Ground Control Management System (GCMS), to monitor in real-time the effect of rapid mining on pillar and face loading, stress redistribution in and around the longwall panel, and caving characteristics of the roof. The Bureau's GCMS, combined with the company's existing monitoring systems, which include environmental monitoring, a computer programmable conveyor belt system, and gamma ray roof control thickness indicators, has been effectively used to improve safety at the face, increase productivity, and reduce production costs.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Project was established in 1975 by the Department of Energy (DOE) under Public Law 193 to develop the necessary technology for safe disposal of radioactive wastes from the defense programs of the U.S. The technology development involves extensive theoretical, numerical, and laboratory programs, as well as construction of the WIPP facility in southeastern New Mexico for in situ testing and waste storage demonstration. If after the demonstration, the facility is found to comply with regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency, then the facility will become a repository for Transuranic (TRU) waste. The underground portion of the facility is 655 m beneath the ground surface in massive natural salt deposits of the Salado formation, as shown in Figure 1.

In the last 20 years, studies on controlled flow recirculation in various countries have been carried out in both coal and metal mines. These studies have shown that in addition to economic gains, partial flow recirculation can be used to provide mine workings distant from surface access points with the required volumes of air. These studies have also shown that the operation of fans and regulators, used in a recirculation system, will induce transients in gas flow and gas concentration. Various models have been developed to explain the problem. However, most have failed to incorporate important factors such as diffusion and dispersion in the modeling process. This study examines the theoretical background of gas emission transients from caved areas in coal mines, represents the problem by a "tank-airway" network model, and provides a possible solution. The study also presents the results gained from a laboratory model constructed to evaluate the major factors affecting the shape and duration of gas flow and gas concentration transients in an airflow recirculation system. In this model, the gas injection system was rearranged to simulate the variations in gas emission rates due to changes in air pressure. Within this model, a set of booster fans and regulators were used to generate the changes in air pressure within the model. Finally, the study presents an algorithm and a computer program GASTRAN, developed to analyze the gas concentration transients and calculate the pollutant transport levels in a complex ventilation network. The application of the program is illustrated by means of an example problem.

Given that the majority of mine ventilation operating costs are imposed by shafts, the need to predict the resistance of a planned shaft with reasonable accuracy is important. During conceptual design, shaft resistances are usually predicted by use of published friction factors, k, based upon lining and fitting configurations. More often than not, published friction factors do not directly coincide with "real" shafts, so their use is somewhat limited. For more accurate shaft resistance determination, equations both theoretical and empirical may be employed if there is detailed knowledge of the shaft. These equations treat the shaft resistance as discrete components, with their sum being the overall shaft resistance. This paper describes the basic shaft resistance equations and verifies these equations by comparison to field measured shaft resistances. Several shafts were examined which varied in depth, shape and fitting arrangements. Results are presented and conclusions drawn to show that the shaft resistance equations are accurate.

Because cyanide is a naturally-occurring chemical, geochemical and biogeochemical mechanisms exist to retard or attenuate the movement of cyanide and its compounds in the subsurface and to degrade such compounds into low-hazard reaction products. The attenuation capacity of subsurface earth materials can be measured, predicted, and enhanced by simple and inexpensive procedures. The paper describes methods of testing the geochemical and biogeochemical attenuation capacity of the subsurface and offers general suggestions for methods of enhancing such capacity. It also presents examples of data which documents such attenuation.

Michiquillay is a major copper deposit situated about 70 km (44 miles) northeast of Cajamarca in northern Peru (Fig. 1). It occurs largely in quartz monzonite in a shatter zone produced by the intersection of northwest- and northeast-trending fault systems. The geology is described by Hollister and Sirvas (1974). The ore deposit was drilled in 1963-1964 by Asarco, with results indicating a resource of 575 Mt (634 million st) averaging 0.72% Cu-0.03% Mo. A decision to bring the project to production has been deferred because world capacity to produce copper has been more than adequate to serve world requirements since 1964. The chain of events leading to the discovery of Michiquillay was set in motion by a decision by the management responsible for the Chilete mine to undertake an investigation of the surrounding area for a possible supplementary source of mill feed to bolster its decreasing lead-zinc reserves. Chilete, located 100 km (62 miles) inland from Pacasmayo, is the most northerly, important mining project in Peru, and little was known of the mineral potential north and east of that point. Relatively unimpressive reports of Colonial silver mining had attracted little investigation, and little was known of the regional geology. One study by Benavides (1956) had been made of the Cretaceous in the region of Cajamarca.

This paper describes the implementational aspects of a blast hole kriging system that has been developedfor the purpose of daily ore/waste control in an open pit mine. The primary goal of blast hole kriging is to improve the ore/waste delineation procedure. A complete computer program package called Blast Hole Kriging (BHK) System was developed for IBMIPC AT or XT computers, using the Fortran language and supplemented by a few assembly language routines for the bit- map manipulation. This paper emphasizes the practical implementation requirements of the system and discusses system design considerations.

Uranium precipitation from an eluate using hydrogen peroxide has been studied in a laboratory continuous unit. The important process parameters were the dosage of H2O2, reaction pH and chloride ion concentration. In the process, the alkaline eluate is acidified to a pH of 2, then H2O2 at 110%-130% of the stoichiometric requirement is added, and finally NaOH is added to maintain a pH of 4 for one hour to complete the precipitation and settling. The chloride content in the system is controlled to 50g/L or below by rejecting part of the decant solution. The process has been successfully employed in commercial operations. The uranium recovery is complete, while the precipitate settles rapidly and can be processed to high purity yellow cake without filtration.

A group of bisbenzylisoquinoline (BBIQ) alkaloids has been shown to exhibit various degrees of effectiveness in preventing silicainduced fibrosis in animal models (1, 2). The capability of these drugs to interact with phosphatidycholine vesicles and rat alveolar macrophages was studied using fluorometric and equilibrium dialysis methods. The lipid binding affinity of these alkaloids was found to depend upon several structural factors including hydrophobic substitutions, the chiral configurations, and the double oxygen bridge-restricted conformation of the benzylisoquinoline moieties. Tetrandrine, which is highly effective in preventing fibrosis, showed strong binding to both lipid vesicles and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, curine and tubocurine, which have little or no effect on silicosis, exhibited only weak binding to lipid vesicles and almost no binding to cells. The moderate binding affinity of fangchinoline to vesicles and cells corresponded to a moderate effectiveness of the compound as an antifibrogenic agent. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrogenic potential, also exhibited high binding affinities for lipid and cells. In summary, this study indicates that alveolar macrophages exhibit large binding capacities for certain members of the BBIQ alkaloids. A positive correlation was observed between binding affinity to alveolar macrophages and the reported antifibrotic potency of these compounds, suggesting that the ability of these drugs to interact with alveolar macrophages may be a key step in inhibition of the progression of silica-induced pulmonary disease.
