As part of a general effort to increase safety, efficiency, and profitability of its mining operations, MICARE personnel with the support of NorWest Mine Services, Inc. determined that the key to improving development mining was the implementation of roof bolting as the means of primary roof support for both main entry and longwall gate road development. Until mid-1994, MICARE had relied exclusively upon primary roof support systems composed of heavy steel beams and wooden posts. Support systems were designed, implemented, and evaluated that were successful in controlling the mine roof under extreme geological conditions. This paper describes the geological challenges, support selection criteria, and presents the instrumentation and 'mine measurements made to assess the bolting performance during the development and retreat mining process of longwall mining.

"A coal mine in New South Wales is longwall mining 300m wide panels at a depth of 160-180m directly below a 16-20 m thick conglomerate strata. As part of a strategy to use hydraulic fracturing to manage potential windblast and periodic caving hazards associated with this conglomerate strata, the in situ stresses in the conglomerate were measured using ANZI strain cells and the overcoring method of stress relief. Changes in stress associated with abutment loading and placement of hydraulic fractures were also measured using ANZI strain cells installed from the surface and from underground. This paper presents the results of in situ stress measurements and stress change monitoring undertaken as part of the hydraulic fracturing program.Overcore stress measurements have indicated the vertical stress is the lowest principal stress so that hydraulic fractures placed ahead of mining form horizontally and so provide effective pre-conditioning to promote caving of the conglomerate strata. Monitoring of the full-scale hydraulic fractures has confirmed the hydraulic fractures grow horizontally.Stress changes monitored during hydraulic fracturing formed part of a broader program to investigate fracture geometry and growth rates to confirm the characteristics of the hydraulic fractures placed. This monitoring showed that vertical stress in the conglomerate strata was being increased by up to 1 MPa in close proximity to the hydraulic fracture and had the effect of tending to promote asymmetrical growth of subsequent fractures about the injection borehole.Monitoring of stress changes in the overburden strata during longwall retreat was undertaken at two different locations at the mine. The monitoring indicated stress changes were evident 150 m ahead of the longwall face and abutment loading reached a maximum increase of about 7.5 MPa. The stresses ahead of mining change gradually with distance to the approaching longwall and in a direction consistent with the horizontal in situ stresses. There was no evidence in the stress change monitoring results to indicate significant cyclical forward abutment loading ahead of the face consistent with the observations of face conditions underground adjacent to both measurement locations. The forward abutment load determined from the stress change monitoring is consistent with the weight of overburden strata overhanging the goaf indicated by subsidence monitoring."

"The EGAT Mae Moh coal mine is an open-cut coal mine in Thailand that produces about 16 million tons of lignite annually to generate 2,400 mw of electricity. The surface mine pit covers is 4 by 7 km (2 by 4 mi) with mining depths ranging up to 260 m (853 ft). A large pit slope is formed with the progression of the mining operation. However, massive slides in the pit slope often occur due to weak planes, such as faults and bedding, and the weak mechanical properties of the rocks. Hence, a 200-300 m (656-984 ft) boundaries of rock block including coal seams is left in front of faults in order to prevent slides and maintain the stability of the pit slope. As a result, there are significant coal reserves beneath the abandoned area along the pit slope.The focus of this paper is on the applicability and design of the highwall mining for recovering much of the coal left along the pit slope.INTRODUCTIONThe EGAT Mae Moh Mine is located about 630 km (186 mi) north of Bangkok, Thailand (see Figure 1). It is the largest coal mine in Thailand and produces about 16 million tons of lignite annually from open-cut mining (70 % of the total coal produced in Thailand). The coal is used to generate 2,400 mw of electricity at the Mae Moh power plant, which is situated near the mining area. The mine pit covers an area of 4 by 7 km (2 by 4 mi) at varied depths up to 260 m (583 ft) as shown in Figure 2. As the mining operation progresses, the pit becomes to be deeper and deeper. In the year 2035, the bottom of the pit is expected to reach depths of 500-600 m and the open-cut mining operation will be finished. The possibility of an underground mining operation is being investigated.A large pit slope is formed with the progression of open-cut mining. However, massive slides often occur in the pit slope along weak planes including faults and bedding planes due to the weak nature of the rock. As a result, 200 to 300 m (656 to 984 ft) boundaries of rock including coal seams are left in place in front of faults to prevent slides and to maintain the stability of pit slope. Moreover, the dip of the slope is less than that of the planned design. As a result, there significant coal reserves abandoned along the pit slope."

State of the Art Room and Pillar mining techniques have been employed at two coal mines in the UK in the last two years. This paper describes the design of pillars and rockbolted support systems for Room and Pillar mining operations in these collieres. Within the last year, rock mass classification systems have been used in the design process of a room and pillar mining layout at one of these collieries. In particular, the roofbolt support system was detailed using these techniques and the support system was linked with operational aspects such as depth of cut. The depth of cut was initially estimated using rock mass classification systems and then verified by a stand up trial which was monitored remotely. The stand up time has a direct influence on the operational aspects of the mine and this is described. The design was verified by performance monitoring and the results are discussed. The importance of understanding the role of rockbolting is emphasised along with some examples of accurately determining in-situ bolt performance. The paper also recommends some modifications to rock mass classification systems when applied to underground coal mining operations.

Complex method of ruling of rock pressure is considered in conditions of rapid roof subsidence. The purpose of this method is elaboration of emergency devices into hydraulic props. Also method of unloading of solid roofs is worked out. An analysis of means of protecting hydraulic props of powered supports 6om dynamic loads made it possible to divide them into four classes according to principle of operation: emergency, operating hm an increase of pressure; emergency damping; emergency, operating according to the "plastic element" principle; inertial emergency, operating hm dynarmc loads. It was established that the overwhelming 'majority of designs of the first three classes of emergency devices (EDs) are based on !mditional approaches, which exhausted their possibiiities of high-speed response. Delay on their opening is caused mainly by inertia of the moving locking parts. In our opinion, the most prospective are EDs using the inertia of the moving locking parts for depressurizing the piston cavity of the hydraulic prop with a minimum delay (inertial EDs). The essence of the designs of EDs having an inertial principle of action is that into the hydraulic prop containing movable and immovable elements is additionally introduced a spring-operated contracting support, which is installed on the movable element. Under dynamic loading of such a hydraulic prop hm the roof, the support moves relative to the movable element, performing the role of an inertial mass, which leads to instantaneous depresswization of the piston cavity of the hydraulic prop. Technological measures for unloading of solid roofs consists in creating of long oriented cracks in rock massif. Description of method for creating cracks, demanding equipment and means for cone01 the progress of splits are included. Also technological schemes for realization of the method of saving underground mines and rock mass are included. The results of experimental realization of this method on the Kuzbass and Poland coal mines are also included.

Cement and resin encapsulated tendons are widely used in the stabilisation of mine roadways. One of the main factors in controlling the efficiency of the reinforcement is the ability of the tendon to generate load in response to rock deformation. The analysis of field data from instrumented reinforcing tendons complimented with extensive laboratory investigations have more accurately defined the mechanisms by which load generation occurs. The role of reinforcing tendon profiles, hole geometry and encapsulation medium properties in controlling the reinforcement stiffness and capacity are discussed. The results of the investigation have implications in both the design of rock reinforcing systems and the optimisation of encapsulation mediums and tendons.

Stability of a pre-exnacted recovery room plays a vital role when longwall face approaches and during a longwall face move. In an attempt to extend the application of pumpable cribs into recovery room support and to limit roof bolt installation when a longwall face approaches the recovery room, yieldable and cuttable pumpable cribs (YCPC) were employed in the recovery room at the northern West Virginia mine. The YCPC consists of two layers of materials with different strengths. This allows considerable deformation from the floor and/or roof by sacrificing the soft layer while maintaining relatively high load capacity under mining¬induced front abutment loads. The thickness and stiffness of the soft layer, installation and quality control are the key factors when using the Yieldable and Cuttable Pumpable Crib to stabilize longwall recovery room- Underground observation and monitoring results show that the Yieldable and Cuttable Pumpable Crib is a viable solution to insure stability of the recovery room and can save at least two days for a longwall face move at the mine.

"The risk of fatalities from rib failure is still prevalent in the coal mining industry. This risk has prompted further research to be conducted on rib deformation in order to understand the mechanisms of rib failure, with the long-term objective being to improve rib support design. This paper presents the results of ACARP research project C25057, which investigated the mechanics and drivers of rib failure. The results of rib deformation monitoring at three different mines in Australia provides rib deformation characteristics for overburden depths ranging from 160 m to 530 m. Monitoring includes deformation during development drivage conditions and during the longwall retreat abutment stress environment. The rib deformation monitoring covered three different seams: the Goonyella Middle Seam, Ulan Seam, and Bulli Seam in the Bowen Basin, Western Coalfield, and Southern Coalfield, respectively. The observed mechanisms driving the rib deformation ranged from bedding shear failure along weak claystone bands to vertical shear fractures to kinematic failures driven by shear failure dilation. The variation in mechanisms of rib failure, together with the seemingly consistent method of rib support design, prompts the question: What exactly is the role of rib support?INTRODUCTIONThe current risk of rib fatalities in the coal mining industry has prompted further research into understanding the mechanisms of rib failure. Three Australian mines assisted further research by providing sites for rib deformation studies as part of the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25057. The mines included in this study were Moranbah North Mine, Ulan West Mine, and Appin Mine. This paper provides key results of the rib deformation monitoring relevant to assessing the mechanisms of rib deformation.The approach of monitoring rib deformation and rib support loads was used to measure and characterise the dynamic rib deformation present in both development and longwall retreat stress environments. The characterisation of rib deformation, together with rock failure modelling, was used to determine the mechanisms for failure within the rib and to assess the interaction of rib support with the failure process. The mechanisms of rock failure are considered an important factor in understanding the drivers for the failure. Consideration of the site-specific failure mechanisms can provide for a more tailored support design."

This paper presents the results of a case study conducted in a two-entry gateroad in a coal mine where excessive roof deformation and bolt loading resulted in failure of many roof supports. The instruments consisted of 16 fully grouted, strain gaged resin bolts, load cells on both full and partially grouted cable bolts, and vertical deflection multipoint extensometers. These instruments were installed on-cycle to measure loading on bolts in an existing support pattern and to determine if cable bolts could be used to improve roof stability. Results showed significant amounts of movement within the bolted zone. In sonic cases, these movements were enough to load the supports past their ultimate strength. Geology appeared to be a significant factor in localized roof degradation; that is, a very weak rock layer in the immediate roof overlain by a very strong rock layer contributed to the development of shear planes. Only one instrumented bolt had a maximum strain of less than 2,000 microstrain, which was the yield point of the steel. The average maximum strain on all bolts was 20.000 microstrain. However, electrical continuity to many gages was lost, and a pattern was noted that would indicate possible bolt failure. Wire mesh and concrete cans installed as secondary support performed very effectively.

"The coal mine roof rating (CMRR) was developed by Chris Mark and Greg Molinda to bridge the gap between geological variation in underground coal mines and engineering design. The CMRR accounts for the compressive strength of the immediate roof, the shear strength and intensity of any discontinuities present, and the moisture sensitivity of the immediate roof. The CMRR has been widely used and validated in Eastern US coal mines, but it has seen limited application in the Western US.This study focuses on roof behavior at a Western coal mine. Mine A shows significant lateral geological variation, along with localized faulting and a laterally extensive sandstone channel network. The CMRR is not used to predict roof instability at the mine.It is, therefore, hypothesized that there are other factors that are correlated with roof instability in underground coal mines that could potentially also be included in the CMRR.This hypothesis was tested by collecting 30 CMRR measurements at Mine A. At each measurement location, a binary record of the roof condition (stable or unstable) was made along with parameters, such as depth of cover, thought to also correlate with roof stability. A statistical analysis of the data was performed to determine the parameters in addition to those included in the CMRR, which can be correlated to roof stability.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDRoof fall is one of the greatest hazards facing underground coal miners (Barczak et al., 2000). In 2017, 91 lost-time injuries occurred due to roof fall in US underground coal mines. A further 48 roof falls occurred with no lost days (MSHA, 2018).The coal mine roof rating (CMRR) classification was developed by Molinda and Mark (1994) to quantify the geological description of mine roof into a single value that could indicate mine roof stability and be used in engineering design. It is widely used in the Eastern US as an input for the analysis of longwall pillar stability (ALPS) in underground coal mines. It provides an excellent start; however, it is arguably not fully comprehensive, nor is it widely used in the Western US."

The paper briefly reviews the type of support and stability problems encountered in mining tunnels in U.K. Carboniferous rock conditions, particularly the Coal Measures where almost all such tunnels are located. Stability prediction of mining tunnels is discussed and a computer-based model which deals with stratified rock conditions is described. Various schemes for monitoring the stability of mining tunnels are examined and the application of the results discussed. Comparisons between predicted and measured Closure values are presented for a major Coal mining tunnelling project at Selby in the North Yorkshire Coalfield. Conclusions are drawn concerning the application of the present prediction technique together with the importance of underground monitoring. Examples of different types of mine tunnel stability problems encountered in the U.K. Coal Measures are discussed and comments made on the secondary effects of tunnel peripheral rock weathering and corrosion of the associated support systems.

Ground control problems caused by multiple-seam interaction frequently sterilize coal reserves. Interaction mechanisms differ for overmining and undermining and are controlled by mining, spatial. and geologic conditions at each site. A multiple-seam interaction analysis software program, UGLY (Uppersearn Gateroad Longwall Stability), has been used to evaluate sterilization of coal reserves due to overmining at three locations. Four case histories were reviewed to determine the effectiveness of improved ground control in mitigating interaction effects.

"Current and emerging practices to ventilate longwall gobs are prompting increased design and analysis of standing support requirements related to longwall mining. Specifically, additional design methodologies are being employed to evaluate standing supports in the #2 entry of a 3-entry longwall system.Numerical modeling will be used to evaluate the performance of standing support in the #2 entry between gobs of longwalls in the Herrin No. 6 seam. The performance of standing support in the #2 entry will be evaluated based on the following: (1) The effectiveness of standing support in maintaining an open airway in the #2 entry; (2) The interaction of standing support in the #2 entry with standing support in the longwall tailgate; and (3) Loading conditions of longwall pillars. Initial numerical modeling activities are focused on evaluating the roof to floor convergence in the #2 Entry and using the ground reaction curve concept for support design.Numerical modeling indicates that, like standing support in tailgates, supports in the #2 entry require some type of yield mechanism to withstand initial uncontrolled convergence. Numerical modeling also suggests that support density can be lower than that used in a tailgate support application. The numerical models used for initial investigation of support performance in the #2 entry are limited in their ability to evaluate support performance. The magnitude of uncontrollable convergence can be estimated with LaModel software. Near-seam conditions have not been investigated in this research since the LaModel software does not have the ability to evaluate inelastic rock behavior.IntroductionDuring the past three decades, many researchers have investigated standing support performance in longwall tailgate entries. Very little attention was paid to the middle entry of a threeentry longwall gateroad. As longwalls retreated, no personnel would travel the #2 entry, and the entry was considered part of the longwall gob. In response to recent mine disasters, regulatory agencies and operators have devoted more attention to these entries. Prior to the Upper Big Branch mine disaster, little or no secondary support was applied in these entries. Unlike secondary support in longwall tailgates, there is little empirical knowledge or quantified research specifically applied to secondary support in the #2 entry. This paper outlines initial steps used to develop a design methodology for secondary support in the #2 entry."

The effects of corrosion upon the load bearing capacity and ultimate tensile strength of galvanised friction bolts were determined. Corrosion rates were measured by overcoring of the reinforcement elements in situ. Overcoring was achieved at several sites using a specifically designed overcoring drill rig. This rig has the capacity to drill up to 3.0m long 140- diameter core in any orientation and up to a collar height of 7.0m. The recovered core and friction bolt elements were pull tested in the rock mechanics laboratory at the WA School of Mines (WASM) in order to determine their load-displacement characteristics for various embedment lengths. The friction bolt elements were then analysed for rates of corrosion and tested for their ultimate tensile strength. Relationships were formed between these data and the environmental conditions to which the friction bolts were exposed, in order to determine the major factors affecting the corrosion process and how they affect bolt performance.

Longwall mining is one of the most widely practiced underground coal mining method. The behavior of the longwall gob is very critical in the understanding of the complex ground response to longwall mining. In the limited data available, the values of gob moduli used in numerical modeling ranged from 1,000 psi to over 300,000 psi. Such a wide variation in moduli would greatly affect the results of the numerical analysis. A better understanding of the behavior of the gob will allow numerical models to be more accurate for simulating longwall mining conditions. In this study, a gob model based on the Terzaghi's model was incorporated into the comprehensive finite element package, ABAQUS, to simulate the loading behavior of longwali gob material. A case study was used to verify the proposed gob model.

This paper introduces an analytical approach for the determination of the vertical stress in the chain pillar system between two adjacent longwall panels. The development of this approach is based on the principles of fracture mechanics and superposition. Some empirical formulae have also been incorpomted into the development of the mathematical model. The mine entries and longwall gobs are treated as Mode I cracks in an infinite plate while the resistance of gob material and the characteristics of the pillar yield zone are considered as the distributed forces on the surface of the cracks. An user- friendly computer program has been developed to facilitate the calculation involved in this task. This approach is as accurate as the numerical analysis methods but requires much less expertise and computer hardware and software to apply

The effects of underground longwall coal mining on flow in perennial streams within the Pittsburgh seam basin were evaluated. Four streams above four different longwall mines were studied. Overburden depths at the study sites ranged from 500 to 600 feet. At all four locations, premining streamfow measurements were made to establish baseline flow conditions. Measurements were then repeated at each location after the longwall face passed beneath the stream. At one location, in which the longwall panel axis was roughly parallel to the stream, the streamflow was monitored as the longwall face advanced. Measurements at this location showed that temporary flow reduction occurred as the face advanced underneath; however, after the tensile portion of the traveling subsidence profile passed, this effect was lessened. At two of the sites in which the stream was roughly perpendicular to the panel axis, postmining streamfow increased across the panel and decreased over the development headings, such that the net lateral change in streamflow across the fully subsided panel and associated development headings was small compared to the measured flow.

"Draw rock (small rock that forms/falls when bolting the roof and/or rib) is the cause of numerous injuries annually. These injuries result in lost work hours and low morale. The report below explains how ""Mine Safe Draw Rock Shields"" (Pans) are used in an underground operation. This report will chronicle the application of these pans in a Southern West Virginia coal mine along with testing data that measures their effectiveness. Since the introduction of these pans in 2002 the amount of reportable accidents relating to draw rock has decreased by 80%. The report below reinforces that perimeter contact is critical to the performance of these pans. In addition the strength of these products at the perimeter will determine their effectiveness. The results of the testing data outlined in this paper, along with the physical records at the study mine, confirm that the use of pans has significantly reduced draw rock falls at this facility.BACKGROUNDSupplemental support is defined as ground control that is used in addition to required support in an underground mine. Some examples of supplemental support are:• Pans• Mesh/Geogrid• Mats• Half Headers• Boards• ChannelA typical roof condition that warrants the use of pans is when loose small rock is dislodged while bolting. If the top is very scaly (loose, thin rock) additional supplemental support can be used in conjunction with pans such as mesh or geogrid (See Figure 1). Pans will provide protection where used and approximately 12 in (250 mm) out from perimeter. This is achieved by contact with a surface which will put scale in tension up to 12 in (250 mm) from perimeter of pan.INTRODUCTIONThe ease of applying a roof support system is critical to effectively operating a deep mine. Figure 2 shows how a pan is installed in conjunction with a roof bolt and bearing plate. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that supplemental support cannot decrease the performance of required support. The goal of using all supplemental support is to provide additional safety for the miner which equates to increased productivity.The ability of skin control products to contact a surface is the single most critical characteristic (Figure 3 and Figure 4). If the material does not contact the surface it cannot be effective. Therefore, the flexibility, design and proper installation of the products are critical in determining their effectiveness. Figure 5 shows the proper installation of the roof pan.To reiterate, all skin control must be applied in conjunction with a roof bolt and ASTM approved bearing plate as shown in Figure 4."
