Multiseam mining has been carried out at many collieries in South Africa. It the seams are In close proximity difficult and dangerous mining conditions may arise. In the Witbank area multiseam bord and pillar mining has been carried out, while in Natal where the seams are thinner and of a higher quality, total extraction methods are common. Several combinations of multiseam mining have been carried out. The paper highlights a number of case studies and the strata control problems that can arise.

At the 19th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining, a paper was presented detailing new types of Jennmar INSTáL tensionable cable bolts (Stankus and Taylor, 2000). Since that time, significant testing and trials of the various types of tensionable cable bolts have been conducted. Several MSHA districts and state regulatory agencies have now approved these systems as primary support This paper will detail the use of tensionable cable bolts as primary support at two longwall mines in Virginia (MSHA District 5).

This paper analyzes experimentally the stress-strain relationship and the characteristics and variation trends of acoustic emission signals of the medium- and high-burst-prone coal/rock fracture process. The precursor and sensitive characteristics of the acoustic emissions when the burst-prone coal/rock fracture occurs were obtained. The characteristic index and the feasibility for predicting rock bursts using acoustic emissions technology were proposed. This paper describes the design, construction and commissioning testing program for a laboratory facility at the School of Mining Engineering, UNSW, Australia, aimed at evaluating reinforcement tendon performance when subjected to shear loading. The project has been financially supported through the coal industry ACARP research initiative. The single failure plane design adopted in the test rig has been successful in allowing shear loading to be directly applied to fully installed (and where relevant, pre-tensioned) rock bolts. Initial results are extremely encouraging, and illustrate a significant axial component of load development as shearing takes place - particular in lower strength, softer material types. The paper also outlines future plans for use of this facility.
