A clear vision of the future coal mining industry was developed into a hierarchy of technology needs by the National Mining Association (NMA) and the Chief Executive Officers of the mining industry. Although improvements in safety and environmental factors were the main drivers in the technology roadmapping workshop sponsored by the Department of Energy, the agile mining machine of the future must efficiently extract coal from deeper, thinner, and more geologically complex coal beds. One of the challenges will be to develop sensors and software that enable clean coal cutting in a changing geologic environment. The roadmap identifies imaging ahead of raining and horizon control within the top ten needed technologies. For these technologies to be adopted by the mining industry, they must be proven to be effective while driving down mining cost and risk. This paper describes how three-dimensional imaging ahead of mining and horizon sensors enable improved ground control and safety in the mining of underground coal.

The Black River and Maysville underground limestone mines operated by Carmeuse Lime and Stone, Inc. in northeastem Kentucky are two of the largest underground limestone operations in the United States. The combined output of these two options has consistently averaged over 5.5- million tons per year for the last decade. The mines operated beneath 650-ft and 1,200-ft of overburden and are affected by high horizontal stress. In 1982 changes to the mine design were made at the Maysville mine to improve ground conditions. A series of design changes were initiated in 2002 at Black River to improve ground conditions. This paper reviews the results of the changes made at Maysville, recent horizontal stress measurements conducted at the Black River mine, and the recent modifications to the Black River mine design. Roof fall statistics at both operations are used to compare the distinctly different mine layouts used at the two mines.

A massive pillar collapse occurs when undersized pillars fail and rapidly shed their load to adjacent pillars which in turn fail. This chain reaction-like failure may involve hundreds, even thousands, of pillars and the consequences have been catastrophic. One effect of a massive pillar collapse can be a powerful, destructive, and a potentially hazardous airblast. On eleven recent occasions, massive pillar collapses have occurred in six southern West Virginia coal mines. Two other instances of massive pillar collapses in U.S. mines have been documented in the literature. Research was conducted at four mines where massive pillar collapses occurred. Geotechnical evaluations of roof rock, coalbed, and floor conditions were made. Evidence indicates that in each case a massive and competent roof rock unit was able to bridge a relatively wide span, creating a pressure arch. Eventually, the pressure arch apparently broke down, and the structural characteristics of the pillar system were such that sudden, massive pillar failures occurred. Data collected at the failure sites also indicates that all the massive collapses occurred where the pillars width-to-height ratio was 3.0 or less. Numerical modeling, performed with a modified version of the MULSIM/NL computer program, supports the conclusions that the extent of the mined-out area, the bridging capability of the main roof, and the width-to-height ratio of the pillars are probably all significant factors in the occurrence of massive pillar failures.

Longwall developments in the UK have historically consisted of single entry gate roads. Adjacent developments were separated from existing panels by large barrier pillars (designed of sufficient width to get away from the longwall abutments of the previous panel) or by small barriers driven in the shadow, or de-stressed zone, of the previous panel. Some 2nd panel tailgates were also driven skin to skin leaving no coal barrier between the newly driven entry and the heavily supported existing gateroad. With the developement and wide acceptance of fully bolted entries and the pressure to reduce production costs, alternatives to single entry drivage, particularly yield pillar developments, were examined. Through the Rock Mechanics Branch of British Coal, a cooperative study was begun with Jim Walter Resources, Inc., USA, (JWR) to look at the yield pillar alternative in detail. This study was to determine the feasibility of utilizing yield pillars in the UK and to determine, through monitoring, the possibility of reducing stable pillar widths at JWR. The study has included extensive monitoring of the yield-stable-yield pillar system at JWR No. 7 Mine and an underground trial of a two entry yield pillar test area at Welbeck Colliery in the UK. This paper describes results from the JWR study and the subsequent results of the first advancing yield pillar development in the UK at Welbeck Colliery.

An investigation was conducted to determine the nature and frequency of coal mine roof failure beneath valleys. A mechanism for this failure, and suggestions for controlling this problem are presented. Hazardous roof conditions identified in a number of mines were positively correlated with mining activities beneath stream valleys. Mine maps with overlays of unstable roof and locations of stream valleys show that 52% of the instances of all unstable roof in the surveyed mines occurred directly beneath the bottom-most part of the valley. The survey also showed that broad, flat-bottomed valleys were more likely to be sites of hazardous roof than narrow-bottomed valleys. Evidence of valley stress relief was found beneath a number of valleys in the form of bedding-plane faults and low-angle thrust faults. This type of failure, previously believed to be only a shallow phenomenon, was found at mining depths as great as 300 ft. In situ horizontal stress measurements in a mine beneath a valley and the adjacent hillsides confirmed valley stress re1ief. Underground mapping showed that roof falls in excess of 100 ft in length and up to 25 ft high closely aligned with the valley axis. Numerical analysis of 13 valleys overlying one mine property showed the effect of the valley excavation on horizontal and vertical stress. Thickness of cover, valley shape, and the orientation of the valley relative to the maximum regional horizontal stress all influence the "valley effect" on roof stability.

Developing a coal seam that has been influenced by previous mining in seams either above or below can result in severe ground control problems. In many instances, interactions between operations are inevitable. but improvements in ground stability can usually be achieved by-predicting potential problem areas in advance and adjusting the mining plans accordingly. This report investigates four case studies involving interactions between operations that used both room-and-pillar and longwall mining methods. In each case, geologic and mine design parameters are addressed, and those parameters found critical to the interaction are further defined in relation to observed ground problems.

The objective of extensive underground experimentation on three longwall coal faces was to improve the stability of mechanised longwall faces through investigation of the relations between support resistance and convergence and resultant deformation of roof and face strata. In particular the influence of high setting and yield pressures on several strata and support parameters was studied in great depth. Increased setting pressures resulting in an increase in setting load densities from 0.15 MN/m2 to O.45 MN/m2 were shown to reduce convergence, face spalling roof flaking, lateral movement of roof and floor, extrusion of the face wall and progressive failure of the coal wall ahead of the face. This was shown to result mainly from the change in roof strata deformation from a wedge shaped compression zone with tension at the face edge to an even beam shaped compression zone over the face area. Debris thickness above the support canopy and below the base was observed to be the one of the most variable parameters which influenced the support characteristics particularly the rate of load acceptance by supports and the roof to floor convergence. A setting load density of 0.4 MN/m2 to 0.5 MN/m2 was found to be optimum under soft to moderately strong sandstone roofs. The authors demonstrated that use of guaranteed set valves with powered supports contribute to good strata control, reduce face down-time and increase face productivity.

A deep mining operation in the Lower Kelly (Imboden) seam in Wise County, Virginia experienced severe ground control conditions in its attempt to develop reserves situated under increasingly higher cover conditions. Ultimately one of only three mines capable of providing access to a large reserve area had to be abandoned. A thorough geotechnical exploration program was carried out to allow characterization of the critical roof and floor rock strata in accordance with the modified geomechanics classification system. The principal roof and floor rock stratigraphic sequence types were defined and mapped throughout the reserve area along with other critical geological factors. A ground control study based on the geotechnical findings provided a quantitative analysis of the causes of previous entry instability. Further analysis of pillar and entry stability identified configurations which would remain stable for the variety of strata types and range of overburden depths within the remainder of the reserve. Mine designs based on the geotechnical evaluation have, to-date, provided the stability required for long-term future development - of the reserve area. However, some areas of difficult ground were encountered which could not be anticipated with the drill data available at the time of the original study.
