Good planning is critical to operating a safe and efficient mining operation. As the shallow coal scams become depleted, attention turns toward deeper mineable seams or remnant coal reserves. It is becoming more common to place a mine in a scam that is below or adjacent to existing mine workings. Significant research has been conducted regarding the ground control issues of multiple scam mining. However, safety aspects of the operation may not be fully considered. Safety issues include working below or adjacent to a flooded mine and controlling gas Communication between the active mine and the nearby mine. This paper will discuss the safety issues a mine operator should consider when working under or adjacent to mines that may be flooded with water.

The paper describes the use of a physical model technique to investigate the failure modes of mine tunnels with reference to the in situ stress field. The characteristics of stratification commonly encountered within UK coal mining conditions have been taken into consideration. The investigation has indicated that the weak floor strata in coal mining tunnels, under the action of high rock stresses, will be subject to the floor lift problem in both predominantly horizontal and vertical stress fields. However, the failure mode and mechanism varies between the two stress field patterns. In the predominantly horizontal stress field, the tunnel floor tends to fail by gradual bending of the laminations, whilst in the predominantly vertical stress field, the floor tends to fail by a shearing action with the failed material lifting in the form of a block. The failure mechanism is discussed with reference to mechanics theory.

In addition, it will discuss general support concepts pertaining to the tensioned bolt system which are derived 6om a series of studies in conjunction with the authors' working experience and extensive research efforts over the years.
