Tomographic imaging, commonly known as a CAT-scan or CT-scan, is used in the medical field to generate a picture of the interior of a body. Current research is applying this method to bodies of rock so that rock failure can be better understood and predicted. This paper discusses the basic principles of tomography and describes recent developments in the use of seismic tomography in longwall coal mines, including results from a bump-prone longwall coal mine and continuing research.

Strength of coal is one of the governing factors in size determination of mine pillars, and therefore affects the percentage of extraction and thus, utilization of reserves. Coal strength is also important from the subsidence control standpoint, where mine pillars with appropriate safety factors should be designed for long term stability. Determination of coal seam strength has been addressed through the extrapolation of the coal strength obtained from a small number of samples on the whole section of the seam. This procedure often gives unreliable results. Presented in this paper is a method of in-situ strength testing of coal, allowing for a realistic determination of seam strength. Results of a field case study dealing with the coal seam, where samples for the laboratory strength tests could not be obtained due to the dense cleat, are presented. However, in these conditions, the in-situ testing was successful. A comparison of both conventional and the in-situ penetrometer method was carried out. It was found that the penetrometer data not only improve the accuracy of strength determination of the entire seam, but also prove to be much more cost effective than the conventional method on a per test basis.

Violent failures of coal pillars, known in practice as coal mine bumps, have long been a subject of investigation. Many field investigations have considered geological conditions that create high stress in the pillar to be the main causative factor leading to bumps. In recent years, constraint at interfaces has been observed to be associated with the occurrence of coal bursts. This paper shows how interface friction and width-to-height (W/H) ratio affect the degree of violence of coal specimen failure. A series of UCS tests on 178 coal samples from bump-prone (Utah, called UT coal) and non-bump-prone (West Virginia, called WV coal) mines were conducted. Three violent failure parameters? peak sound pressure level, core zone failure, and ultimate stress? were used to assess the violence of failure. The degree of violence were investigated at varying interface frictions (high: µ = 0.40, medium: µ = 0.22, and low: µ = 0.13) and W/H ratios (W/H = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 12). A simulation series of modeled coal specimen under uniaxial loading was also conducted using the finite element method to observe the equivalent plastic strain distribution experienced by the modeled coal specimens. It was found that the violence of coal specimen failure depends on W/H ratio and interface friction. Interface friction has more significant influence on the violence of failure at high W/H ratios than it does at low W/H ratios.

In recent years, improvements made to the longwall system have accelerated at a faster pace than those made to the gate entry development system. As a consequence, unless planned years ahead of time, extending the panel length is nearly impossible without some innovative approach. At Cyprus Amax Coal's Emerald mine the G panel length was extended by 3,500 ft- by developing three entries across it to facilitate development of its headgate and tailgate entries simultaneously when the adjoining F panel was in operation. After evaluating alternative supporting methods and associated risks, determination was made to backfill these entries and crosscuts using a low strength flyash cement mixture prior to mining thru. Instrumentation was also used to monitor the stress change or front abutment stress in both the coal and the backfilled material ahead of the face. Longwall mining thru these three entries took about four eight-hour shifts and proved to be very successful. The designed flyash cement mixture provided adequate roof stability and caused no difficulty in the shearer's cutting while eliminating an in-panel longwall face move and minimizing the risk of roof or floor failure in the in-panel openings, or in the worst scenario loss of the face during the longwall cutting thru. This approach provided the intended result of extending G panel and recovered about one million tons of coal. Longwall extraction in the Phalen Scam in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia is carried out under flooded abandoned workings in the Harbour Seam 140 m above, and at depth of up to 700 m beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Careful planning of panel and pillar dimensions is necessary to prevent inflows from the overlying workings and to prevent the development of excessive subsidence strains at the seabed. This paper briefly summarises the research undertaken over the past five years by CBDC and CBCRL into the problems associated with mining under water, and then describes the development and application of a design/planning code of practice developed jointly by CBDC, CBCRL and mine regulatory agencies. The design method employed in the Code of Practise is based on empirical data from the coalfield and parameters developed from subsidence modelling and previous water inflow experience. It includes precautionary measures to be adopted during development and mining, and monitoring procedures to be followed. It is flexible enough to allow future developments in the understanding of inflow mechanisms to be incoporated without major modifications, and represents a major step forward in reducing the potential hazards associated with coal extraction in the coalfield.

Since the inception of a qualitative pressure arch theory by Haak4 in 1911, much work has been done in an effort to apply this concept to underground mining. It has been used in both longwall and room and pillar mining to determine roadway and pillar stability (with varying degrees of success). This paper presents a summary of a case study where the pressure arch concept was extended in a totally qualitative manner to define the source of roof control problems in the mains of a Pennsylvania mine. It was concluded that, due to the method of mining employed, a pressure arch formed over a portion of the entries, and the high abutment stresses accompanying it resulted in extreme roof deterioration. The following discussion will include a general presentation of the arching mechanism, the physical response of the roof strata under mining-induced abutment stresses (both from the case study and in general), a computer simulation of ground stability under both "normal" and "abutment" stress conditions, and finally, potential means of alleviating such conditions.

During 1987 and 1988, the Eighty Four Complex Mine of BethEnergy Mines, Inc. used the open entry longwall recovery method to recover one partial and three complete longwall faces. Various cement- concrete supports were utilized to support the open recovery entry until the approaching longwall face cut into this entry. This recovery method and the supports used were studied by the mine personnel and the Bureau of Mines. This paper discusses the findings, results and conclusions of that study.

Strata management is a critical and now necessary requirement in the New South Wales underground coal mining industry. As a formal and structured process, strata management allows ground support and mining methods to be tailored to the anticipated and encountered geotechnical environment in a controlled manner. In its application, strata management therefore enables operators to identify and control geotechnical hazards and the risks they pose to the mining operation, including risks to personnel safety and mine production. The paper considers recent developments in strata management in the New South Wales underground coal mining industry. Points covered include the statutory requirements stipulated in the Coal Mine Health and Safety Regulations, Geotechnical Hazard Plans, tiered support plans, the Authority to Mine concept, Trigger Action Response Plans and monitoring. Several successful and unsuccessful case studies are included which make specific reference to roadway development and longwall retreat and in doing so, the unique demands imposed by these two different aspects of the mining operation on strata management.

The strong outbursts often occurred in active tectonic lanes and areas of high stress concentration. In this paper, the author describes some characteristics of the strong outbursts and analyses the effects of ground stress, gas pressure and the properties of coal in outbursts.

The German hard coal production predominantly derives from underground multiseam mining activities. Beside common surface damages, ?inner mine damages? on underground infrastructures (i.e. main roads, cross cuts and shafts) due to mining excavations occur to an increasing extent. As these "inner mine damages" dramatically increased because of the development towards high performance longwall mining technologies, this matter raised to be a severe problem concerning mining economics. To protect durable and long lasting underground infrastructures, precautionary measures such as suitable mine layouts, adapted planning of mining operations and moderate face advances have to be considered. Some examples of "inner mine damages" recorded by means of mine surveying methods are given in this paper. An empirical-mathematical model based on the principles of mining subsidence engineering methods will be introduced. This model allows to minimize ?inner mine damages? and helps to support and optimize mining processes.

Conventionally, roadways in South African collieries are 6 to 7 m wide. This dimension is chosen so as to allow maneuvrability of appropriate mine machinery and equipment, to meet production requirements and to ensure roof stability. Over the last two decades, a great deal of research effort has been expended to understand the behaviour of roadways in different strata within this width range. The results have improved the understanding of the strata behaviour to such an extent that 6 m wide roadways are developed with a high degree of confidence. With the advancement of technology and the quest to mine at a lower cost, some mines in South Africa have started considering the benefits of other types of mine machinery that will require much wider roadways to ensure optimum productivity. The roadways required will have to be about 10 - 14 m wide. The challenge confronting these coal mining companies is the potential instability that might be associated with such wide roadways. This dilemma is aggravated by the fact that, apart from theory, nothing is known about the expected behaviour of such wide roadways. This led to experimentation at a selected site in a South African coal mine where 10 m and 14 m wide roadways were developed and monitored. This paper highlights the experimental procedure adopted, discusses the results obtained, compares the prediction of elastic theory to reality and set the precedence towards understanding the behaviour of wider roadways in South Africa.

This paper presents a retrospective assessment of ground control research and its successful application by CONSOL Energy over the past 25 years. Recognizing the need to improve the understanding of coal pillar design mechanics under shallow, medium, and deep covers, an extensive underground coal pillar instrumentation program was initiated in the mid 1980s. Combined with sophisticated numerical modeling technique and laboratory tests, results from this instrumentation program were used to advance the concept of coal pillar design and to demonstrate that numerical modeling can be used to predict in situ coal pillar strength, especially under non-ideal conditions where interface friction and roof and floor deformation are the primary controlling factors. To evaluate the impact of longwall mining, a 10-year subsidence research program was initiated in 1986 that encompassed surface, subsurface, and underground measurements, as well as a sophisticated numerical modeling technique. Results from the research revealed that interface friction and shearing between rock layers within the overburden had a profound effect on surface subsidence development and the resulting strain. Recognizing the impact of horizontal stresses on CONSOL?s mining operations, extensive horizontal stress measurements were conducted using the USBM Borehole Deformation Gage and the CSIRO Mininfrac system in the mid to late 80s. Roof extensometers and CSIRO HI Cells were used to measure roof displacement and roof stress concentration in longwall headgates and tailgates, which resulted in the definition of right-hand and left-hand longwall panels. Pillar design modifications, combined with cable bolt application and innovative standing support installation, were then successfully employed to mitigate horizontal stress impact on the right-hand longwall headgates and left-hand longwall tailgates. An in-house floor bearing capacity test apparatus was fabricated and employed underground to determine mine-specific floor bearing capacities which, along with other geotechnical parameters, were then used in the mine-specific shield design. To promote caving of thick, massive sandstone immediately behind longwall face supports and to improve face conditions, the hydraulic fracturing technique was successfully employed by CONSOL to pre-fracture the sandstone prior to longwall mining. Face monitoring and numerical modeling confirmed the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracturing technique. A roof geology reconnaissance program was initiated by CONSOL in the early 1990s to improve roof control, safety, and production. Information obtained from the reconnaissance program was used successfully to guide mine planning decisions and daily roof support practices.

On the basis of the Law on Financing Hard Coal Mining dated 28 December 2007, the subsidized German hard coal mining industry will be shut down to the end of the year 2018 in a socially acceptable manner; in 2012 this decision will be reassessed. Even after the abandonment of all mining activities subsequent burdens are inevitable. In this paper, the possible long-term effects resulting from a mining industry history, which is spanning more than 200 years, and their possible consequences are pointed out, in particular in connection with the abandonment of mine water drainage measures which is economically meaningful in the long term. According to the decision situation as it presents itself today, this point in time will be far beyond 2018. In preparation for this, an action framework is to be developed in areas possibly affected.

This paper describes the numerical analysis of some geotechnical factors influencing the application of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) method. The study was aimed at comparing the differences in stress distribution in the chain pillars of the face ends and caving mechanism of the top coal in LTCC method between the flat and inclined thick coal seams. The outcomes from this analysis will benefit mine planners in designing the location of roadway development in the next longwall panel. In addition, results from the study will extend the understanding of caving mechanism in top coal section when applying the LTCC method (with the direction of the longwall face is down dip, retreating along strike) in inclined coal seams. The results demonstrate a clear effect of dipping factor on cavability of the top coal and on the stress distribution in the chain pillar of the face ends.

A 125 foot high steel lattice frame tower supporting a 500 kV EHV transmission line and located over the gateroads of a longwall mining operation was subjected to ground movements from the mining of adjacent longwall panels. Under an agreement with the owner of the powerline, the mine operator was required to minimize mining impacts on the transmission line. In view of this requirement, the mine operator prepared a forecast of the expected subsidence ground movements prior to the onset of mining. These forecasts, in conjunction with finite element analyses of the tower superstructure under the imposed ground movements and wind loadings. suggested that the structural capacity of the tower would probably be diminished little, if at all, by mining. Ground movements determined by survey during mining of the two longwall panels were found to be in close agreement with predictions. Strains measured in selected tower members during mining generally agreed with values calculated by the finite element analyses. The study confirmed a methodology to predict subsidence and to assess its effects on steel lattice transmission towers.

It has been well accepted that water content significantly changes the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Experimentation data of Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS), Modulus of Elasticity (E) and Brazilian Tensile Strength (UTS) of sandstone showed that increasing water content from oven dried to saturated condition will decrease their values. Ultrasonic tests carried out together with the UCS tests also indicated that the sonic wave traveled faster as rock specimen became saturated. During triaxial tests, the sonic velocity changed with the applied load. It was found that constitutive behavior of dried rock specimen was dependent on the confining pressure, whereas saturated rock specimen did not seem to be dependent on the confining pressure. Dependency of failure criteria such as Mohr-Coulomb. Bieniawski and Hoek & Brown on the water content was conformed as well. In order to show the influence of water content on the stability of an underground opening, a numerical modeling, based on finite element method, was carried out. The model was run using the mentioned failure criteria.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant is a deep underground facility mined in bedded salt interspersed with persistent clay inter- beds. The clay seams delineate beams of salt above and below the excavations which strongly influence excavation performance. This paper reviews available rock mechanics information relevant to improving drift stability by removing the roof beam. Conceptual deformation mechanisms, relevant field data, and numerical analyses were used to investigate the effects of mining the roof of the excavations along a clay seam. Finally, a case study that applies the results of this investigation is presented.

The South Bulga Colliery longwall operation, owned and operated by Cyprus Coal Australia. Oakbridge Pty. Ltd., and located near Singleton, NSW, is currently operating under an average 80-ft-thick (24-nt) sandstone unit residing immediately above the coal seam, resulting in sudden and severe face weightings. To date, nine severe weightings have occurred at the property (within Panels 3, 4. and 5), three of which resulted in face closures accompanied by significant equipment damage and several weeks of downtime. The remaining six events nearly resulted in face closures, incurring single-pass vertical convergence of up to 8 in (200 mm) along the pan line. In an effort to mitigate and/or eliminate the occurrence of these severe weighting events, mine management has established an in-house program to immediately address the geotechnical and operational mechanisms underlying rapid weightings, as well as specific measures to mitigate these events on future panels. In support of this in-house effort. NSA Engineering Pty. Ltd., is assisting the engineering staff at South Bulga in developing a more aggressive face monitoring program. The aim of this program is to provide weighting occurrence predictions sufficiently ahead of time to ensure that operational controls are optimized prior to attempting to mine through potential weighting areas. This paper reviews the occurrence of weightings to date at the South Bulga Colliery as well as the latest developments in shield monitoring technologies to forecast these events in near-real time.

Since the advent of longwall mining, various methods and materials have been used during relocation to control the intrusion of the gob in the shield/panline area. (figure 1) Controlling this gob is critical to ensuring a safe, speedy, and productive longwall move. An uncontrolled gob can cause a number of problems, from increased worker exposure to entrapment of equipment to lost production. With an eye toward worker safety and increased productivity, several different methods have been developed to minimize gob intrusion. This presentation will take a look at the history and development of longwall ?screens? and ?mesh?, from chain-link fencing to high-modulus polyester geogrids. The benefits and advantages of these developments will be defined. Since 1994, longwall coal mines have used polymer geogrids during longwall recovery to control intrusion of gob material into the shield/pan line area. As described by Brandon and Collins (1996) in their paper presented at the 15th Ground Control Conference in Golden, CO., mines had used various forms of support, such as welded wire mesh, chain-link fencing, wooden cribbing, props, and steel cable to accomplish this. These methods worked, but were labor-intensive, slow, and provided varying degrees of gob stoppage. Although a few mines still use chain-ink fencing to control the gob, longwall coal mines have generally settled on polyester geogrids to control gob and roof and these mines have been instrumental in providing input in order to develop and improve these geogrids products. he trend during the past twelve years has been to incorporate stronger grids and to eliminate auxiliary reinforcements, such as steel cables and nylon or polyester webbing. A job that once required heavy steel cables, props, and fencing is now accomplished with strong, lightweight, high-modulus polyester grids. When we discuss high-modulus grids, we refer to the ratio between load and strain, as illustrated in figure 2. These grids are woven or knitted from yarns that have been pre-stressed. When these grids come under load, they pick up the load more quickly. This allows less deformation in, in this case, the mine roof. The same principle applies when these grids are used to control the ribs. With less elongation, the grids will hold rib material tighter, thereby keeping travel ways more open.
