The removal of oxyanions of arsenic present in mine process water and drinking water to a regulatory level is a challenging problem. Recently a patented adsorbent lanthanum oxide has been developed which has shown strong specificity for the anions of arsenic. In this paper the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of arsenic adsorption on to lanthanum oxide are discussed. Adsorption tests were performed at different temperatures using synthetic solutions of arsenic of varying concentrations. From the kinetic data and adsorption isotherms thermodynamic properties such as Gibb's free energy, standard enthalpy of adsorption, standard entropy, isosteric heat of adsorption and activation energy were determined. The results showed that temperature had a positive effect on the rate and degree of adsorption:The activation energy decreased with increase in the initial concentration thus indicating solute-solute interactions in the system. Also, the isosteric heat was found to decrease with increase in the adsorption density implying a heterogeneous adsorbent surface.

The Freeport McMoRan chlorination circuit is comprised of four related processes: ore chlorination, gas scrubbing, chlorine supply and excess hypochlorite removal ("hypo kill"). Each of these processes are described, and related to the pertinent mineralogic components in the carbonaceous ore feed to the plant. The chlorination system in use at Jerritt Canyon to passivate forms of preg-robbing organic carbon has proven to be a cost effective and efficient means to recover gold from low sulfide carbonaceous refractory ores, where gold may not be specifically associated with either the sulfides or the carbon.

"The present study deals with the kinetic studies of reduction of some selected transition metal tungstates with hydrogen. The measurements were carried out by the isothermal thermogravimetric method. Shallow powder beds were employed in order to avoid the effects due to transport phenomena affecting the reaction rate. In this way, the chemical reaction rates could be selectively studied. The experiments were carried out in the temperature range 873 - 1173 K. From the experimental data, the activation energies were evaluated and were found to be around 88 kJ / mol in the case of both iron as well as cobalt tungstates indicating the similarities in W-O bonds in both cases. The activation energies obtained are discussed in the light of the position of the transition metal in the periodic table as well as the thermodynamic stabilities of the various tungstates.IntroductionThe tungsten containing hard metals, characterized by high density, belong to a class of two-phase metal matrix composites. While these types of materials have traditionally found their applications within the defence industry as armour-piercing projectiles, counterbalance in helicopters and military aircrafts, outer casings of hand-grenades, etc., commercial applications for this class of alloys also exist, including radiation shields, penetrators for the oil industry, turbines for turbo-jet engines and a wide range of sports related parts. A possible route to the production of these alloys is to reduce the tungstates such as FeW04, Co W04 and NiW04 using a reductant like hydrogen or carbon monoxide. In order to have a better understanding of the processes involved in the production, it is important to have a knowledge of the reduction kinetics for these tungstates. According to the knowledge of the present authors, while the reduction ofNiW04 by hydrogen gas has been investigated earlier in the present laboratorypl no systematic reduction study has been carried out previously for the tungstates of iron, cobalt."

Ore bodies around the world are declining in grade, whilst increasing in complexity. The level of impurities relative to the valuable metal is steadily increasing, posing new challenges to existing operations. Ion exchange is widely used in the hydrometallurgical industry for both primary recovery of metals and the removal of impurities. The superior selectivity of ion exchange resins makes them exceptionally suitable for the removal of target impurities to very low levels, thereby saving operating costs, increasing the value of the final product and significantly improving revenue. The ion exchange process in these applications is very simple, using standard ion exchange equipment and acid regeneration. The process can be fully automated, requiring minimal operator interference and supervision Examples of impurities that are successfully removed via ion exchange include iron, antimony and bismuth from copper electrolyte. In the copper electrolysis process, antimony, bismuth and arsenic tend to form slimes which are dispersed in the electrolyte. These slimes contaminate the cathode and/or decrease the quality of the copper deposition. A special chelating resin was developed to remove antimony and bismuth, while at the same time ensuring minimal chloride leakage to the sulphate matrix. The work is described in more detail in this paper. Ion exchange is also used to remove copper, zinc and nickel from cobalt electrolyte. This paper addresses a few of these examples in more detail.

Recent operating improvements at the Phelps Dodge Chino Smelter, coupled with intensive capital expenditures since 1987, have resulted in a safer, higher quality, more productive smelter. This paper briefly reviews the flowsheet of the Chino Smelter with emphasis on recent capital expenditures. The main focus of the paper is to provide case studies of how operating functions have been improved. Case studies presented include: (1) safety, (2) anode quality control, (3) flash furnace cross-over build-up control, and (4) flash furnace temperature control. Most of these accomplishments have been achieved by providing specific measurable goals and subsequent feedback to operating crews.

There are mainly three commercial nickel laterites in Turkey: Gordes, Caldag and Sivrihisar. The first two appear in Western Anatolia. The third one, Sivrihisar (Yunusemre) laterites have been found in the first decade of the millennium, in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey. Since then, mining facilities have been continued in Yunusemre. Calcination, prereduction and smelting of Sivrihisar laterites have been extensively studied and published. In the current work, some results of the studies related to characterization of Sivrihisar laterites will be presented.

Copper is one of the most widely used metals in industrial processes and is also present in most mining operations. Extraction of copper from solutions often proves difficult due to the presence of complexing agents. ChromatoChem, Inc. has developed a Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) support (HiPAC) for removal and recovery of metals from wastewater. The HiPAC SPE support employs chelating agents covalently coupled to a long linker molecule. Several solutions containing copper and complexing agents were tested including 1) copper and carbonate, pH 9.8, 2) mixed metals and anions with copper and cyanide, pH 11, and 3) copper and the chelating agent EDTA, pH 11. The copper was extracted from solutions one and two at high pH, but the EDTA containing solution needed the pH lowered to make the copper available for capture. In each example, the copper concentration was significantly reduced by HiPAC SPE treatment.

"AbstractThe industry is confronted with stricter discharge levels and an increasing awareness to avoid toxic waste (such as heavy metal containing sludge obtained in physicochemical water treatment) and recover valuable metals. This can be realized by ion exchange or by electrodeposition. Both techniques however show an optimum concentration range to efficiently remove and/or recover metals: electrolysis can recover the metal in its metallic form but suffers from low efficiency when applied to diluted solutions, whereas ion exchange can only be applied economically in the low ppm range.A combination of ion exchange followed by electrodeposition was applied to an industrial wastewater. The strong acidic ion exchange resin was stripped with H2SO4 giving a solution of 9g/L nickel. From this solution, nickel was electrodeposited in an ammonia buffer on a Ti-mesh cathode with high current efficiency. It is shown that organic compounds (surfactants, brighteners, …) present in the industrial wastewater do not influence the recovery process.IntroductionAlmost all rinse waters emerging from metal plating plants are generated during the washing operation of plated materials. These solutions with low metal content must either be recycled within the process or be discarded to the surface water after decreasing their metal content to acceptable levels determined by the local environmental regulations, which become more and more stringent. Today, the most commonly used practice is a physico-chemical treatment (precipitation) and a resin post treatment to meet the standards. A more sustainable approach should use a technology to recover efficiently the metal or metal salt without the production of sludge and the effluent should be consistent with environmental regulations."

"In-situ observation of unidirectional solidification using transparent substance has been performed to investigate the growth direction of solid phase. Cell or dendrite of which preferred growth direction is not parallel to the heat flow direction was observed with various solidification conditions. Dimensionless growth direction (p) changes from 0 to 1 with increasing growth velocity at a constant temperature gradient. Introducing the dimensionless growth velocity, the relation between p and growth condition could be correlated.IntroductionTransition in macroscopic solidified structure from chill to columnar zone which is found in normal castings takes place via grain selection1). Cast products such as turbine blades are unidirectionally solidified, grain selection plays an important role to choose suitable crystals which have reasonable orientation in the region called ""starter"", which is a very initial part of casting2). Therefore, grain selection is a very important process in the formation of casting structure. The present authors have been studying on the process of grain selection using succinonitrile, which is a transparent organic substance and have found that the growth distance necessary for grain selection depends upon the solidification condition3-5). When the solid/liquid interface is dendritic, the grain selection occurs quickly. On the other hand, when the solid/liquid interface is cellular, it occurs slowly. We supposed that the growth direction of dendrite is different from that of cell when the substance is unidirectionally solidified. Indeed, Kurz and Fisher wrote in their text book that dendrite grows along its preferred growth direction, <100>, regardless of heat flow direction and that cell grows along heat flow direction regardless of its preferred growth direction1). However, there is no quantitative description about the growth direction when the solid/liquid interfacial morphology is cellular. Furthermore, there have been little works6) to study the growth direction of cell and dendrite."

Soil and groundwater beneath a zinc production plant in The Netherlands are contaminated with metals and sulfate. To avoid contamination of nearby drinking water aquifers, a hydro-geological containment system and a biological treatment plant for the extracted ground water have been installed. Currently about 5000 m3/day of groundwater is extracted from a combination of 12 shallow and deep wells. Heavy metals and sulfate have to be removed from the extracted water before it can be discharged into a river. Several water treatment methods have been studied and pilot tested at the site. The preferred and selected process is based on the activity of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and combines sulfate removal and heavy metal removal in one single installation. Anaerobic bacteria reduce sulfate to sulfide resulting in the precipitation of metal sulfides. Excess sulfide Is biologically converted to elemental sulfur. A full scale biological treatment system was started up in May 1992. Design, start-up, commissioning and operational experiences are reported in this paper. Concentrations of metals and sulfate in the SRB water treatment plant effluent are well within the limits set by the Dutch Authorities for discharge to surface water.

The production of zirconium oxide, sponge and zircaloy materials through chemical and hydro - metallurgical processes generates many effluents containing valuable zirconium and hafnium . This paper deals with the various processes such as multiple crystalization, phosphate precipitation, ion-exchanges amine solvent extraction etc, for the treatment of these effluents and subsequent recovery of valuable zirconium and hafnium .

Ornamental compound stone are produced by industry for decades, however, few published studies describe these materials. Brazil has many deposits of stone wastes and a big potential to produce these materials. This work aims to evaluate the chemical resistance of ornamental compound stones produced with marble waste and unsaturated polyester. An adaptation of Annex H of ABNT NBR 13818:97 standard, with reagents commonly used in household products, was used. The results were compared with those obtained for natural stone used in composite production.

The conventional pyrometallurgical methods to treat copper sulfide concentrates include generally, one or more oxidizing steps where the formation of SO2 gas can not be prevented. From the economical point of view and the nature of some of the processes in which SO2 is produced, its complete capture is not feasible; therefore an important fraction is released to the atmosphere as fugitive emissions. In this research, the reduction of chalcocite was studied in the presence of lime as an alternative method, which overcomes the pollution problems related to SO2 emissions. The effect of temperature, time, concentration of carbon and CaO on the reduction rate were studied. Among these variables, temperature affects most the reduction rate. Conversions over 95 % can be obtained in less that 20 minutes at temperatures over 1000 ° C. The measured partial pressures of the gaseous components indicated that the chalcocite reduction proceeded through the gaseous intermediate species CO, C02, and the overall kinetics was controlled by the Boudouard reaction. The kinetic model In(1-X)= kt fits well the experimental data. Apparent activation energy of 3 14 kJ/mol was calculated for the temperature range of 900 0C-1050 °C.

"Titanium alloy was prepared from titania-bearing blast furnace slag (Ti-BF slag) by aluminothermic process in an induction furnace. The effects of aluminum amount on the titanium silicon yield and titanium recovery ratio were studied. The phase transformation and chemical composition of the prepared alloy were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) respectively. It was found that the mass fraction of silicon and aluminum increased with increasing the aluminum amount, however, the mass fraction of titanium increased first and then decreased with increasing the aluminum amount. Furthermore, both the titanium alloy yield and titanium recovery ratio increased with the increase of aluminum amount. The main phases of the alloy were TixSiy and AlTi3. The titanium alloy samples prepared in various conditions had a composition (wt.%): 38–50% Ti, 29-34% Si, 4-11 Al%, 1.6-2.2 Mn%.IntroductionPanzhihua and Xichang regions in the southwest of China are rich in vanadium-titanium magnetite containing iron, vanadium, titanium and gangue. According to the characteristics of the resource, iron and vanadium are successfully recovered with a blast furnace process and a converter process. However, most content of titanium are entered in the blast furnace slag with TiO2 22% -26% and metallic Fe 2%–6% called Ti-BF slag. Due to the dispersed distribution of Ti in various fine grained mineral phases with a complex combination between Ca, Al and Si, it is difficult to recover the Ti components[1]. This slag is generated at a current rate of 3.6 million tons per year, which adds to the existing 70 million tons of slag produced so far[2]. The slag has had to be piled as large as the mountains, which not only waste of resources but also cause a pollution of the environment. Therefore, the study of integrated utilizing Ti-BF slag has become very significant."

Extraction of cobalt from cobalt sulfide and cobaltite flotation concentrate from the Blackbird Mine, Idaho, was investigated using an adapted strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Cobalt extractions as high as 100% were realized in the inoculated experiments, whereas only 4% extraction was obtained in the sterile run. The influence of pulp density on the rate and extent of cobalt extraction was also determined. It was found that the extraction of cobalt followed predominantly the indirect mode of bacterial activity. In this process, ferric iron oxidizes cobaltite to cobalt sulfate and ferric arsenate while being reduced to its ferrous state; the bacteria continuously re-oxidize ferrous to ferric iron. Electrochemical measurements using cyclic voltammetry suggested that cobaltite oxidation involved a number of intermediate reactions.

This work concerns the study of the effect of discarded bond paper on the mechanical behavior of polypropylene/organophilic clay nanocomposites. A brown polycationic bentonite from the state of Paraíba, Brazil, was treated with sodium carbonate to transform it into a bentonite that swells in water and then treated with hexadecyltrimethylammonium ammonium chloride to transform it into a bentonite that swells in organic liquids. Polypropylene with 3 % polypropylene graft compatibilizer (PP-g-AM) was mixed with 1 % and 2 % by weight of discarded bond paper and with 1% and 2% by weight of organophilic clay using a twin-screw extruder. The specimens were prepared by the injection process. The clay as received and after organophilization was characterized by XRD, SEM, and capacity of swelling in water and in organic solvents. The nanocomposite specimens were characterized by XRD and thermal analysis. The mechanical behavior of the injected specimens was evaluated by strength, flexural and impact tests. The nanocomposites showed improved mechanical properties compared with the polymer without filler.

Sodium borosilicate is the basic composition of coating materials, Vycor and Pyrex glasses. In the present study, viscosities of Na2O-Si02-B2O3 ternary melts were measured under various compositions and temperatures. Experiments were carried out using rotary viscometer and graphite components. Our experimental results were compared with those in literature. Based on present experimental results, the previous structure based viscosity model was modified. The predicted viscosity results are in excellent agreement with the present experimental data in the temperature range with molten state samples. The fitting ranges of the model cover the composition of XB2O3 from 0.1 to 0.6 combined with xSio2 / xNa2O = 0.5, 1,2 and 5 respectively.

"Unique physical and mechanical properties made the Pb-Sn solders attractive for low temperature joining of electronic parts. But since lead in solder materials has become a great enviromental problem and health concern, lead will be slowly replaced by other materials in soft solders. Some of these materials which are currently under investigation are ternary tin alloys. Many different physical properties like wetting behavior, electrical and thermal conductivity and surface tension are measured on these alloys, but on the thennodynamic properties and the phase diagram of the alloys under discussion there is only little information available. We investigated the (Ag, Au, Cu)-Sn-Zn systems and determined the thermodynamic properties over the whole composition range by emf-measurements. From these measurements we also got some information on the liquidus. In the Sn-rich corner the phase diagrams are still under investigation.IntroductionSoldering is technically defined as the joining of two base materials, mostly metals or metal coated nonmetallic substrates, with a third metal. The melting temperature of the third metal or metal alloy should be well below those of the substrates. Solder alloys can be categorized in soft and hard solders. Soft solder alloys usually contain lead, tin, bismuth, indium or cadmium and hard solders gold, zinc, aluminium or silicon. The difference between soft and hard solders is the melting temperature of the soldering material. This temperature is around 350°C.An interesting brief history of solders is given by Vianco and Frear [1]. They report, that in 4000 B.C. solders were already used in Mesopotamia. From archaeoligical evidence those solders were gold-based hard solders.Tin-lead soft solders and their use are not easily found, because in course of time tin has been reduced to stannic acid, making the identification quite difficult. Well preserved soft solder artifacts were discovered in King Tut's tomb dating from 1350 B.C. In ancient time Pb-Sn solders were used primarily for the manufacture and repair of cooking utensils and metal tools. The Romans used lead-tin solders extensively in the construction of the aqueducts."

"On average, one out of two glass bottles coming on to the market is provided by recycling processes in Europe. Glass recycling has been started by the early of 1970s in Turkey, and the recycling amount has been reached to 70 thousand tons recently, while 4.2 million tons which represents only 25 percent of total glass manufactured, is the amount of glass collected annually for recycling in the world. The glass recycle process basically involves collecting, sorting, then crushing and grinding after which glass cullet is produced as the secondary raw material. Removing of the contaminants from the glass cullet, and then melting are the next steps. In this study, recent developments of 100% recyclable without any deterioration in quality, and never decomposable glass, are discussed detailed in terms of glass production processes.1.IntroductionIn many countries, waste glass constitutes a large proportion of solid wastes, and recycling the glass is a major environmental problem all over the world [1]. Among the diverse types of waste, glass is one of the most valuable recycling materials because it can be revived and recycled completely and hardly decomposes [2]. Between 80% and 85% of the mass output from the worldwide glass industry is either in the form of containers for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, or flat glass for building construction or for motor vehicle manufacture. Other product segments, whilst only constituting about 15% of the mass output, produce high value technical and consumer products by comparison with container and flat glass [3].In the present study, the recycling of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) and Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) were examined. The production of glasses and glass-ceramics from glass cullet, synthesis of different compounds from recycled glass were other subjects of interest. The use of recycled glass for construction industry and using glass as aggregate were emphasized. Finally the recovery of glass fibers were investigated."

The direct smelting of copper concentrates to copper metal in a single furnace offers environmental and energy advantages over conventional two-stage copper smelting processes. However, the direct copper making results in unacceptably high level impurities (As, Sb and Bi) in the anode copper. Experimental studies have shown that it is possible to remove these impurities from molten copper by injection of sulfur-hexafluoride. This paper discusses the experimental findings on the influence of various factors on the rate of removal of impurities, such as the impurity inter-effects, initial oxygen content in the metal and injection rate of SF6.
