The subject of this paper is a comparative evaluation of different copper smelting gas cooling techniques, using "productivity and quality" criteria. The first section presents a brief description of the operation of the radiant and the evaporative cooling systems, focusing on the differences between each other, in particular regarding. a) mass and energy balances; b) gas flow, temperature and composition; c) dust concentration and recovery. This section includes a brief discussion of the "client-server chain", i.e. the links between the cooling equipment and the down-and up-stream operations. More in particular, the up-stream server relationship impacts on the operating stability of the furnace, and in turn on furnace down-time and Cu production losses; and the down-stream client relationship affects the operation of the electrostatic precipitators, in terms of workload and cost of handling larger quantities of dust of a given dust size The second section deals with the development of indexes to measure and compare value added through the "utilization, productivity and quality" that can be expected of both cooling methods at the physical and economic levels, and the impact on the overall smelter productivity and the final cost composition of copper. The final section presents the results and includes a discussion of the comparative advantages and disadvantages of both cooling systems.

The effects of CaF2 and ilmenite on dissolution rate and diffusivity of CaO in calcium alumino-silicate based slag in a temperature range of 1500 ? 1600 ºC were studied by using the rotating disk/cylinder technique. The effect of rotation speed on the rate of dissolution in the base slag indicated that mass transfer in liquid slag played a significant role in controlling the dissolution. At a constant rotation speed, the effect of 5 wt% addition of fluxes tothe slag on the dissolution rate was investigated at various temperatures. While CaF2 had the highest effect, addition of ilmenite increased the rate of dissolution significantly. The diffusivity of lime in these slags was quantified using the dimensionless mass transfer correlations for rotating disk/cylinder in the melt. The diffusivity values were deduced using the data on dissolution rate and solubility of lime in the slags. The measured diffusivity in base slag at 1500 C was found to be about 1.32 10-5 cm2/s and increased to 3.07 10-5 cm2/s at 1600 °C. Addition of 5wt% CaF2 increased the diffusivity by a factor of 3 to 5, while 5wt% ilmenite increased the diffusivity by a factor of 2 to 3 in the temperature range of 1500 to 1600 ºC. The two examined fluxes reduced the activation energy of diffusion.

LG Metals Corporation started its second smelter operation at Onsan along with the existing flash smelter on January 31, 1998. Onsan smelter has been producing about 140,000 tons of copper annually from concentrates with the flash smelting line since 1979. In accordance with an increase in domestic copper demand, LG Metals Corporation decided to expand smelting and refining capacity by introducing a second smelter line using the Mitsubishi continuous process and a new tankhouse in 1995. After two years' expansion works consisting of engineering, procurement, construction and a successful commissioning test, the total smelting capacity of Onsan smelter increased to 340,000 ton of copper annually from concentrates. A laboratory process based on simple and environmental friendly operation, aimed at recycling of spent Li/MnO2 batteries, is described in this study. This process involves roasting Li/MnO2 batteries in a vacuum furnace at 650°C, followed by selective leaching Li2CO3 from calcined electrode material in distilled water at ambient temperature and controlled crystallization of pure Li2CO3.

"It will be tested four types of “geochemical barriers”. All those mixtures were contacted with mine waters containing uranium, radium and heavy metals. The loading capacity was determined. The optimum mixture was determined and its efficiency was tested within an uranium areal, where the activity was stopped. It was determined the possibility to recover the radioactive elements and the heavy metals from the investigated barriers.IntroductionThe paper presents the results concerning the performances of some “geochemical barriers” used for the decontamination of mine waters from uranium mining sites, which were tested in lab and in situ.ExperimentalThe research activity was carried out in lab and on the site.In the lab a module was constructed in order to follow up the uptake capacity of the “permeable reactive geochemical barriers” used to remove the radiolelements from the contaminated waters originated from the uranium mining industry. The barriers, which were used, are made of cheap natural materials, which can be easily got (wood chips, peat coal, sawdust, iron span, steel and zeolitic tuff). The following types of barriers were tested:•, 1st barrier: peat coal, sawdust, zeolite on weight ratio of 1/1/1;•, 2nd barrier: bentonite, sand, wood chips, peat coal on weight ratio of 1/1/1/1;•, 3rd barrier: iron span, steel, sawdust, peat coal on weight ratio of 2/1/1;•, 4th barrier: iron span, steel, sand, firry wood chips on weight ratio of 1/1/1.Lab researches concerning the uranium uptake capacity of the above described “reactive barriers” pointed out that the 3rd mixture (iron span, steel, sawdust, peat coal on a ratio of 2/1/1) didn’t reach the maximum uranium uptake capacity not even after eleven contact stages (the uptake capacity being of 70.6 mg U/ kg of mixture) and the mixture of peat coal, sawdust and zeolite has an uranium uptake capacity of 26.6 mg U/kg of mixture and becomes saturated after four contact stages.Each one of the components involved in physical-chemical processes of sorption, reduction and precipitation, will determine the diminution of uranium and other metals contents upstream the permeable reactive barrier."

Nitrogenated carbon films were deposited on the high-frequency induction hardened steels by ion beam assisted deposition. X-ray photoeleetron. spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze the chemical content and the morphology of the coated steels. Rolling contact fatigue tests were performed using Polymet RCF-1 machine with a constant supply of lubricant. It was found that CNx films adherent to the steels substrates were formed by ion beam assisted deposition. It was also found in the rolling contact fatigued specimens that non-propagating crack was initiated in the white etching area indicating the maximum shear stressed, region, leading to surface failure.

Using the k-e turbulence model, a mathematical fluid dynamics simulation of the flow characteristics in a Teniente converter has been conducted. Two cases were studied: - Transversal sections in the smelting-converting zone; and - A three-dimensional simulation that includes the walls of the reactor The calculations give the velocities field, the gravity waves amplitude, the splashing behaviour, the phase distribution and the shear stress distribution. The latter helps to explain the pattern of refractory lining wear. The calculation includes the approximate shape and dimensions, and the eventual coalescence of bubbles.

Several modifications to Zaldivar's original design have been made in order to reach the design cathode production. This paper describes the modifications to the crushing, leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning operations, which in turn have increased the production by 14.8% over the design capacity in 1999. The principal modifications were to (1) incorporate a dry pre- screening plant between the secondary and tertiary crushers to increase the percentage of fines to the piles, (2) increase the retention time of the solutions inside of the piles, and (3) increase the efficiency of the tertiary crushers to reduce the particle size of the product material. The leaching ratio was increased from 2.8 to 5.6 m3/ton. The temperature of the pregnant leach solution (PLS) was increased, the amount of acid used was reduced, and a strain of native bacteria was adapted in highly contaminated solutions. The copper concentration in the PLS was increased by more than 50% and was stabilized at this level by commissioning a process of two-stage leaching. The current density in the tankhouse was increased from an average of 2 16 to 3 17 A/m

In January 1999, a redesign of the Kennecott Flash Converting furnace settler was initiated to enhance furnace integrity and extend furnace life. This furnace uses Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting technology to produce copper directly from copper matte. A detailed assessment was made of all technology available around the world before making a decision on the design features to be incorporated in the new design. The new design includes the following: redesign of all sidewall cooling elements to include the latest cooling element technology; redesign of the furnace hearth to include a stadium hearth at the reaction shaft end of the furnace; redesign of the furnace hearth to include a stepped hearth design adjacent to the furnace sidewalls; addition of flat settler roof cooling elements .around the reaction shaft; replacement of reaction shaft transition elements with an improved design and improvements to the furnace cooling element monitoring systems. The Flash Converting furnace was shut down on a planned basis in July 2001 to implement these improvements after 29 months of operation, converting more than 1,000,000 tonnes of matte. During the 30 day shut down, the improvements were successfully completed, with furnace start up in August 2001

The effects of alkali metal ions Li+, Na+, K+and transition metal ions Cr3+ and Mo6+ on the cathodic current efficiency, deposit quality, crystallographic orientations, deposit morphology and polarisation behaviour of the cathode during nickel electrocrystallisation on stainless steel substrate from aqueous sulphate solutions containing boric acid were investigated. The alkali metal ions had virtually no effect on the cathodic current efficiency, deposit quality, crystallographic orientations, deposit morphology and cathodic polarisation. On the other hand, there were significant variations in the current efficiency and deposit characteristics when Cr3+or Mo6+ were present in the electrolyte. Current efficiency decreased by more than 10% even at lower concentrations (> 100 mg/L). Similarly purity of the deposits was affected by the presence of either of the metal ions. In the presence of Cr3+, there was progressive shifting of the nucleation potential of nickel towards more negative values, whereas, in the case of Mo6+the nucleation potential shifted initially towards positive values in the concentration range 2-40 mg/L, but then towards negative values when its concentration exceeded 40 mg/L.

The ultrafine, monodispersed, spherical cobalt powder has been fabricated by reducing cobalt hydroxide with glycol. It were investigated that the effect of NaOH concentration on the reaction rate and the effects of the concentration of cobalt hydroxide and surfactant on the morphology and particle size. The particles were characterized by the X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), laser diffraction particle size analyzer and BET specific surface analyzer respectively. The XRD shows that the cobalt powders exist mostly in face centered cubic (fcc) structure, a little in simple hexagonal. The cobalt powders prepared at Co(OH)2150g/L, NaOH 40 g/L and surfactant 30g/L, its average particle size, specific surface area and cobalt content, were 0.88µm, 2.705m2/g. and more than 99.5% respectively.

LS-Nikko Copper Inc, has been operating its Onsan copper smelter since 1979. The smelter began its operation with a designed capacity of 80,000 tpa of copper from concentrates and its smelting capacity was increased to 140,000 tpa of copper by modifying the existing line in 1988. The Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting and Converting Process has been operating since 1998 at the initial capacity of 160,000 tpa of copper. In 2002, the smelting capacity of the Onsan smelter has been increased to 426,000 tpa of copper from concentrate. Now the Onsan smelter has plans to increase its smelting capacity to 500,000 tpa of copper from concentrates by 2010. During the expansion work, the modernization of facilities will be accompanied by an increase in smelting capacity, via the Outokumpu process. This paper reviews the brief history of smelting capacity increase in Onsan smelter and its Outokumpu process modernization plans.

A comprehensive simulation of .the gas handling system in BHP Copper's San Manuel smelter was developed using AFT Fathom software, with the objective of minimizing SO2 emissions while maximizing smelter throughput. Once verified with plant data, the simulation quickly revealed' the complex interactions occurring between individual converters and the flash furnace. The increased understanding provided by the simulation allowed novel, counter-intuitive control strategies to be developed and tested successfully.

The chemical components in the saturated aqueous solution of ammonium dimolybdate (ADM) were investigated at room temperature by comparative Raman spectroscopy. In order to explore the further detailed results, a new method of qualitative and half quantitative analyses, based on the main vibrant frequencies and the intensity ratio of the strongest peak to the second strongest peak recorded in Raman spectrum of saturated aqueous solution of ammonium heptamolybdate tetra hydrate (AHM), was put forward and attempted to analyze the chemical components of saturated aqueous solution of ADM. The results showed that there was obvious difference between Raman spectrum of saturated aqueous solution of ADM and that of ADM, but there were good relationships between Raman spectrum of saturated aqueous solution of ADM and Raman spectra of the three samples including AHM, the saturated aqueous solution of AHM and monomolybdate ion in aqueous solution. It was found that aggregated dimolybdate ion ({Mo2O72-}n)did not exist in the saturated aqueous solution, and was changed into heptamolybdate ion (Mo7O246-) and monomolybdate ion (MoO42-), which were in equilibrium each other, but the distribution ratio of heptamolybdate ion was larger than that of monomolybdate ion. In addition, Raman spectral pattern of saturated aqueous solution of ADM was reported.

Mono-disperse ZnS and CdS nano-particles were prepared by the homogenous precipitation method and the effects of SO42-,NO3- and Cl-ions on crystalline of particles were investigated experimentally. The results showed that these anions had no influence on the crystalline of ZnS, but different crystalline CdS ultrafine particles were produced in different anion systems, where the blend-type CdS was obtained from natrate or sulphate solution, and wurtzite-type CdS from chloride solution. It was ascribed to the coordination of Cl- and Cd2+ that altered the supersaturation of precipitate ions in the solution, the existing growth units and their connecting patterns, thereby producing wurtzite-type CdS with a more stable structure.

Commissioned in September 1987, the Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. (PDMI) Central Electrowinning (EW) Tankhouse bas undergone two major expansions in its eleven-year history. A third tankhouse renovation, which began in November 1998, entails complete conversion of the 548-cell facility from a copper starter sheet based operation to Mt. Isa Process stainless steel mother blank technology. This paper outlines the operating history of the Central EW Tankhouse and reviews the conversion process, the rationale that led PDMI to undertake this project, and describes various design optimizations which have been implemented during the conversion.

The BHP San Manuel Smelter operates an Outokumpu Oy flash furnace, conventional Peirce-Smith converters, anode casting facilities, and two double contact sulfuric acid plants. The flash furnace was commissioned in July 1988 and since then, the smelting capacity has been continuously increased to 30% above design. The converter operation was challenged to process larger amounts of matte with existing capacity. Utilization of industrial technological improvements and people technology transformed the Converter Department from a constraint to easily accommodate the new demonstrated flash furnace capacity. This technology also increased secondary consumption, converter campaign life, and reduced operating costs. This paper will describe the important Converter Department achievements in the past five years.
