The morphological characteristics of the nickel particles electrodeposited from chloride dominant aqueous solution was investigated. The effects of the electrolyte constituents, the parameters for the electro-deposition on the morphology of the nickel particles were addressed. It is evidenced that not only the particle size but also the morphology of the deposited nickel particles strongly depend on the electrolyte constituents and technical operation conditions. The electro-crystallization mechanism of the metallic nickel particles deposited at high current density was elucidated. The ultra-fine nickel particles with flake, nodular or dendrite shape may be produced by controlling the duration for electro-deposition.

The LaNi5-xMnx-hydrides have potential applications in cryocooling devices for non-mechanical method to compress hydrogen gas. Thermal aging behavior of LaNi5-xMnx-hydrides of compositions x=0.4 and x=1.5 has been investigated. The hydriding properties of the La1.02Ni4.6Mno.4 alloy do not change significantly after thermal aging at 453K for 260 hours. X-ray diffraction analyses of this aged alloy do not reveal the presence of any new phases but the Bragg peaks become broader. Line profile analyses show anisotropic microstrains with an average <e2>1/2 value of -5x103. Thermal aging of the other hydride, LaNi3.5Mn1.5 hydride, at 623K for 280 hours, showed significant disproportionation; the hydrogen capacity reduced significantly from an H/M value of 0.75 in the activated condition to -0.15 after aging. X-ray diffraction analyses showed disproportionated lanthanum dihydride, metallic Ni, and Mn phases. The Bragg peaks were very broad indicative of microstrains or small crystalline domains.

The Codelco-Chile is considering different processing options for the projected concentrate from the Alejandro Hales mine (former Mansa Mina mine with high arsenic and antimony content of 6% and 0.6%, respectively), that will produce complex blister copper with high impurities contents, higher than the present values produced at the converting process of the Codelco Norte smelter processing only Chuquicamata concentrates. In order to know both the anodic copper quality and the metallurgical implications when a complex blister copper is processed in the refining process of the CN smelter, the Codelco and IM2 ?task force? evaluated positively the refining process for the complex blister copper by addition of alkaline fluxes at laboratory and industrial scale tests. The promising results of the tests done at laboratory scale at the Tohoku University facilities, allowed a large scale test planning to validate the lab-scale results in 3 refining furnaces of 250 t capacity at the CN smelter. The obtained results demonstrate the industrial technical feasibility to process a complex blister copper in the refining furnaces producing an anodic copper quality suitable for the electrolytic process.

Most of the world's zinc metal is produced via the roast- leach-electrowinning (RLE) process. The process is well established, but most of the sulphur in the sphalerite concentrates reports in the acid, which has to be stored and/or sold. There are significant incentives to develop a simpler process with much reduced acid generation. Ferric ion is a well known oxidant for most sulphides, in particular sphalerite, and it converts the sulphide to elemental sulphur. Based on stoichiometry, however, the amount of ferric ion needed to achieve acceptable zinc extractions is prohibitive for downstream zinc recovery from the leach solutions. The process suggested here makes use of less-than-stoichiometric ferric sulphate additions because the ferric ion is regenerated by sparging SO2/O2 mixtures. This regeneration can be effected in-situ in the leach vessel or outside the leach vessel. An example of the application of this new process is presented for a Canadian sphalerite concentrate assaying 60% Zn. The effects of temperature, ferric concentration and ferric ion regeneration are presented. Options to recover zinc from the leach solution are also briefly discussed.

"Grain orientated microstructure was developed for the improvement of ceramic characteristics. Novel polarized light microscopy was developed to examine the grain orientation quantitatively. The degree of grain orientation was estimated from the retardation determined with a Berek compensator. The method was essential to determine a minor grain orientation, which could not be analyzed by means of conventional X-ray measurements. The data were favorably related to ceramics characteristics. The comparis of the ceramics with various degree of orientation was very important to explain the change of ceramic characteristics with processing.IntroductionMicrostructure with grain orientation has a high potential for greatly improving characteristics of ceramic. However, there has been strong restriction on processing and material for developing this structure. It has been crucial to apply forming methods involving high shear such as injection molding1). Grains must have an elongated shape.In recent years, much attention has been paid on the effect of high magnetic field on diamagnetic materials2)3)4), Many ceramic materials are known to be diamagnetic. High magnetic field has a high potential to orient grains. The principal driving force for grain orientation is the magnetic anisotropy of material, which is generated by non-cubic crystal symmetr5). This method of grain orientation is not restricted by grain shape, and can be applied to all materials having non-cubic crystal structure.This study uses alumina as raw materials, and produces alumina ceramics with orientated grain in high magnetic field (10T). Alumina has a magnetic anisotropy due to hexagonal crystal structure. The degree of grain orientation in the green and sintered bodies will be examined and their relevance to magnetic field will be discussed."

Electronic components have precious metals like Au and Ag. These metals have a high performance in electric conductance. The recycling of the scrap, however is too difficult because of the presence of other metals like Fe, Al, Zn, Sn, ceramics and plastics, all together in electronic components. The aim of the present work was to define one way for physical separation to have metallic non-ferrous concentrates. It was used three kinds of scrap. I was used conventional equipment for mineral processing like hammer mill; screens, electrostatic and magnetic separation.

A study on the electro kinetics of lead carbonate, silica, and alumina, in aqueous media was carried out at different pH values. The behavior of potential was determined for these species in the pH range between 3 and 12. Homocoagulation of lead carbonate in aqueous media is analyzed at its isoelectrical point. Lead carbonate heterocoagulation is analyzed with silica, alumina, and silica ? alumina mixtures at low pH values. The experimental results are considered for their possible application to treat residual water polluted with lead.

The goals of and requirements for controlling the solvent extraction stages of the processes are reviewed. The applications at three plants are compared. The development of the technology used is reviewed and design considerations are discussed. Requirements for on-line control and analyzer performance are compared. A new generation of analyzers and its effect on the set-up process of a project is introduced.

In the world, as well as in Republic of Serbia, conventional ore reserves are almost exhausted, so the problem of their shortage is more and more expressed. On the other side, there are many locations with significant reserves of polymetallic ores which present huge potential but cannot be classically processed. Each of these classes of materials has particular mineralogical characteristics which affect their processing. Because of that it is necessary to develop particular technology for each unconventional ore in order to extract valuable elements. The aim of investigation was to define technology for complex processing of the Blagojev Kamen sulfide concentrate by pyrometallurgical procedure in order to valorize valuable non-ferrous and precious metals present, and profit with absolute respect of environmental protection laws. The complex composition of the Blagojev Kamen sulfide concentrate with high content of non-ferrous (15.59% Pb, 9.05% Zn, 2.37% Cu) and precious (697 g/t Au and 744 g/t Ag) metals was the main factor for technological procedure and collector selection. Laboratory investigations are done in four series according to technological scheme: oxidizing roasting, charge preparation (flux addition and agglomeration), smelting under reducing conditions, lead bullion refining, Dore metal refining to final products. It is concluded that precious metals are concentrated in lead bullion (up to 97.95% of gold and 93.37% of silver), which has similar composition to lead bullion produced in lead metallurgy. In this case, simplified technology is used for lead bullion processing because of low content of arsenic, bismuth, etc.

Many gold operations lose gold during processing because some ore characteristics which affect recoveries have not been determined, and consequently the plant could not be designed to account for them. The ore characteristics can be determined with mineralogical techniques by analyzing the plant feed, final tailings and mill products. The plant feed and/or final tailings are commonly analyzed first as a separate project. Mill products are analyzed only if the process employs a minerals separation circuit to produce a concentrate (e.g. secondary flotation circuit to concentrate gold-bearing arsenopyrite), and if assays and materials balances indicate a recovery problem in the minerals separation circuit. Many ores have been evaluated at CANMET on a confidential cost-recovery basis by custom-designing a work plan which was dependent upon the problem and on the characteristics of the ore. The reasons for gold losses have been identified in most cases, and suggestions for modifying flowsheets have been proposed. The methods used in performing the analyses are described in this paper, and non-confidential results from in-house projects are provided as examples of the benefits of such analyses. The analytical methodology involves a combination of the following procedures: -producing heavy mineral concentrates and identifying the gold minerals in the concentrates; -determining quantities of invisible gold in gold-bearing sulphides, sulpharsenides, etc. by SIMS; -determining quantities and liberation characteristics of all gold minerals and gold-bearing minerals in the sample; -finding and identifying gold minerals in silicates; -extensive grinding and cyanidation to determine the ultimate amount of cyanidable gold; -determining impact of clay minerals and graphite; -performing a mineral balance for the gold in each sample; -performing a materials balance to determine the distribution of the gold minerals, gold-bearing minerals, and other minerals throughout the flowsheet, and; -interpreting the results.

In this paper, results are presented concerning the search to implement Supported Liquid Membrane (SLM) technology for the recovery of copper from electroplating effluents. Acid copper electroplating rinse solutions or effluents resulting from the post-treatment of, for example, cyanide-containing copper electroplating baths all contain copper (2+) in the lower concentration levels. A thorough study of the influence of the individual parameters and of their combined impact on mass transfer in small scale laboratory SLM modules has been performed, enabling to set forward the appropriate operating conditions for a pilot plant installation. The pilot plant, containing two SLM modules. of 18 m2 of surface area, has been tested extensively, including short and long term runs, with real process solutions. It was demonstrated that this installation is able to treat 40 l/h of acid copper sulphate rinse solutions· containing 500 ppm of copper. The final copper concentration in the effluent can be reduced to a few ppm while copper metal is recovered by electrolysis of the concentrate. This technology is also applicable to the treatment of solutions with low copper content of origins other than plating shops, such as tailings from copper plants or mine waters.
