"There is a wide choice of different types of woven filter media for hundreds of different filtration applications. Factors such as type of fiber, synthetic polymers used, weave style, fabric finishes and fabrication techniques all play an important part in selecting the best choice for a specific type of filter and process application. The purpose of this paper is to offer some basic knowledge of these factors and how they can impact the performance of a filter, the life of the media and the overall cost of operation through case studies of actual plant filtration applications.IntroductionThe use of woven filter cloth in liquid/solid separation applications is generally well known. Woven filter cloth, by the nature of the weaving process, offers unique consistency and repeatability when compared to some other filter media such as needled felts, papers, sintered structures and knitted cloth. This unique consistency and repeatability is particularly applicable to woven filter cloth produced using monofilament fibers. These fibers are consistent in shape and form the basis for a woven cloth with predictable pore size and throughput characteristics. Woven filter cloth can be used in most wet filtration applications. Typical examples are the separation of chemical and pharmaceutical solids from process liquors, waste stream solids capture, liquid foods clarification, mining separations, and polymer filtration.EnvironmentOne of the first considerations is the environmental demand of the given process. Though it is tempting to look immediately at the particles in a filtration process, it is often better to consider some of the more basic needs of the system. There are numerous materials available, both synthetic and wire cloth. Each has its own unique set of properties."

I was confronted with a profound dilemma as an undergraduate engineering student at the University of New South Wales in Australia in 1992. I had been taught that our planetary life-support systems were in a state of alarming decline by an institution that operated as if what the faculty was teaching was irrelevant. Lights were left on in empty overcooled classrooms, recycling bins were nonexistent, lawns were maintained using pesticides and herbicides, diesel trucks spewed fumes as they passed on their way to drop off chlorine-bleached virgin paper. This disconnect was very alarming to me. While it was obvious that universities should play a leading role in teaching and researching sustainability issues, I wondered how it could be possible to make widespread institutional changes to meet the demands of environmental sustainability when it was not even being done in the very university sector where these ideas were being promulgated. If universities would not change, then who can and who will, I wondered? To a growing number of people, the idea of teaching sustainability without demonstrating it is highly problematic. It is also widely believed that the ability of the higher education sector to reform its own practices is an important indicator of humankind?s ability to address the global environmental imperative across all sectors of society. These sentiments have helped fuel what is now referred to as the campus sustainability movement, a movement dedicated to transforming our campuses into living laboratories for the demonstration and practice of environmental sustainability.

"The nucleated casting process currently under development has the potential for production of Ni-base superalloy preforms that possess superior microstructure to product made by conventional casting processes, primarily for gas turbine applications. In this process, electroslag remelted (ESR) clean (i.e., free of ceramic inclusions) molten metal is conveyed via a watercooled copper Cold-walled Induction Guide (CIG) to a gas atomizer. The spray of clean metal droplets is then directly cast into a water-cooled crucible for ingot production. The microstructure of the resulting ingot preform evolves within the length scale of the individual droplets and is a function of the thermal state of the incoming metal droplets. This, in turn, depends on particle size, flight time and heat exchange with the gas phase.In the present study, computational models is developed for the analysis of the flow and heat transfer in the gas-metal spray system under axisymmetric and steady-state conditions. The gasphase flow is analyzed using an Eulerian framework and turbulent mixing within the gas phase is modeled using the two-equation k-e model. The dynamics of the metal particles is analyzed using a Lagrangian framework that involves calculation of the trajectories of the metal droplets. A two-way coupling is considered whereby the transport and heat transfer in the gas and the metal phases influence each other.The analysis is developed at two levels. The spray model performs a detailed calculation of the spray dynamics in the vicinity of the spray and is intended for predicting the temperature and mass flux distributions of the metal spray depositing into the mold. The chamber model enables prediction of gas flow and motion of metal particles in the entire spray chamber."

A century ago the AIME meeting of 1899 was held at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco California in September. For his presidential address, James Douglas presented this paper which is reprinted in full with the kind permission of the AIME. It presents an interesting comparison relating to events and circumstances in the metallurgical industries at the close of last century. Being on the eve of a new century ourselves, the Editors of this volume of the COPPER 99-COBRE 99 Proceedings considered this paper would be of general interest, hence it is included here. Douglas believed in effective interchange of technical experiences and ideas. He considered the extreme secrecy surrounding the copper works at Swansea, Wales, the world center of copper only years before the time his paper was delivered, as one key reason for its decline, (and eventual closure of all copper plants there). In his paper, the pace of developments in various sectors such as transportation (railroads, the dominant means of I transportation at the time), the iron and steel and copper industries were examined, in much the same way as one might do but on the high technology of today. James Douglas was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada and spent his early life there. Forced to move to the United States for family and financial reasons, he went on to become a pioneer in the new Arizona copper industry, and with luck and good judgement with his interest in the new mining properties he also became very wealthy. Douglas was an accomplished mining and metallurgical engineer. He was the first President of Phelps Dodge and helped transform the small trading company of Anson Phelps and William Dodge into a mining giant.

With the consolidation of the copper industry in the second half of the 20th century resulting in fewer plants treating ever increasing quantities and qualities of feed, the enormous flexibility of the Noranda Process gives it significant advantages over many competing technologies for the production of matte. Toll smelting, recycling, and secondaries treatment will become the cornerstone of profitable operations for all but the lucky few who have large captive mines associated with the smelter. Consequently, the ability to respond to changing market conditions without significant metallurgical or operational upsets will be of considerable commercial advantage. The inherent stability of this bath-smelting process leads to tight matte grade control, while the bath turbulence leads to rapid consumption of feeds with widely varying physical characteristics. Low capital and operating costs combined with a layout suitable for retrofit into existing converter aisles makes it a sensible choice for parts of the world still experiencing the aforementioned consolidation, which is essentially complete in fully developed economies such as the United States of America and the European Union. This paper will discuss features of the Noranda process compared with other technologies and its place in the future global copper production industry, which is set to become increasingly competitive and aggressive.

"The influence of the frequency of AC power supply on the magneto-hydrodynamic during the electroslag remelting process is studied. The focus is on the electrodynamic field and its resulting mechanical effects on the flow and liquid interfaces. The possible influence of the electrochemistry on the droplet formation is qualitatively discussed.IntroductionThe electroslag remelting (ESR) process is a secondary melting technique which can be used for a variety of metals and alloys, provided appropriate fluxes (slags) and melting parameters are employed. The ESR process is presently operating mostly with AC current of about 50 Hz. However for reasons primarily of inductive losses in the electric circuit, furnaces for ingots larger than 1 m, use or are projected to use current of very low frequency (< 5 Hz). Effects of lower frequencies (2.5-5Hz) on macrostructure and non-metallic inclusions were recently studied by Chang [1]. Most of investigations were performed either with DC power or with AC of 50-60 Hz [2-4]."

"Secondary materials have long been processed at the S-furnace of the Mitsubishi continuous copper smelting and converting process at Naoshima Smelter and Refinery. Intensive recycling in the recent years has formed concerns that impurities in the secondary materials may cause drastic changes in the chemical properties of the CL-slag, which is separated from matte in the smelting stage. Among various impurities included in secondary materials, the authors have studied the influences of sodium oxides in the CL-slag because the behavior of sodium oxide has scarcely been studied with respect to the copper smelting slag. The examinations have been applied experimentally on the distribution between slag and matte of arsenic whose acidic characteristics suggest strong affinity to sodium-oxide of basic characteristics in silicate melts. The results have been discussed by thermodynamic evaluations and the results of pyro-tests at the commercial furnace.IntroductionAt Naoshima Smelter and Refinery, the existing line of the Mitsubishi continuous copper smelting and converting process has been operated since 1991. The Mitsubishi Process consists of three furnaces namely the S-, CL- and C-furnace as shown in Figure 1. In the S-furnace, copper concentrate and powdery secondary materials (scraps, sludges, etc) are charged through the top lances with oxygen enriched air. The other secondary materials of lumpy shapes are charged through the chute installed on the furnace roof. Charged materials are smelted by the reaction heat in accordance with the oxidization of copper concentrate. The mixed melt of matte and slag overflows through the launder into the CL-furnace, where the melt is separated into slag and matte by the difference of their specific gravity. Matte is siphoned out and sent to the C-furnace and converted to blister copper continuously. The CL-slag overflows continuously through the slag outlet to be water-granulated. Granulated slag is sold as a raw material used for the cement production and so on. Various secondary materials have been processed at the S-furnace of Naoshima Smelter and Refinery. The primary non-ferrous metals industry is the principal supplier of the minor metals selenium, tellurium and bismuth. It is also a major supplier of antimony. These minor elements are recovered from by-products of base metals production. To ensure that these elements remain available, the cost of production must be compatible with four other factors - method of production, available supply, technological niches, and product stewardship. This paper first describes the relationship between the copper industry and the production of tellurium and selenium. The more complex relationship between the lead industry and bismuth production is then discussed, followed by comments on antimony availability. Product stewardship programs are essential to the growth or certain specialized markets for these metals. Smelters and refineries of non- ferrous metals will play a major role in the recycling of scraps and wastes from these markets. Examples on how such materials can be recycled are given in the paper.

Reflected light microscopy is routinely applied to the study of ore minerals and textures in polished sections prepared from a wide variety of ore specimens. With the increasing interest in environmental problems, the important role of the reflected light microscope in the precise phase identifications and the determination of the textural relationships between those phases needs to be recognized. Among other environmental applications, the microscope has been applied to the recognition of lead smelter particles from remote collect sites in Missouri and those particles have been compared to dust particles from specific localities at the nearby lead sinter plant and lead blast furnace. Dust from a secondary copper refinery has been studied for its mineralogy. Soils in the vicinity of a Missouri lead smelter have been studied for their mineralogy in preparation to the clean up of those soils. Electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts, recently classified as hazardous waste by the EPA, have been examined for their mineralogy and textural intergrowth in order to better evaluate proposed metallurgical treatment procedures to render the dust non-hazardous. The initial products from experimental metallurgical treatment of EAF dusts also have been studied to aid in determining the effectiveness of those treatment procedures. Refractory gold sulfides that have been roasted in the presence of lime to retain environmental objectionable sulfur and arsenic while recovering the gold have been studied by RLM to determine their mineralogy, porosity, and permeability for cyanide leach solutions. These case histories illustrate the applicability of ore microscopy to the study of problems related to environmental concerns.

"The characterization of the surface roughness of the mineral particles is of vital importance for the studies of the mineral processing. In this study, an evaluation of the roughness of the iron ore particles, with the measurements of size distribution and the measurements of specific surface area with the liquid nitrogen absorption, was developed. The main theory of this method is the fact that the roughness of the particle influences the specific surface area apparently. The specific surface area of the particles can be measured with the laser diffraction method and the liquid nitrogen absorption method. The influence of the surface roughness of the particle can be measured with the nitrogen absorption and cannot be measured with the laser diffraction. Therefore, the roughness can be got by comparing the specific surface area with two measurement methods.IntroductionThe characterization of the surface roughness of the mineral particles is of vital importance for the studies of the mineral processing. There are three main methods for measuring the size distribution of mineral particles: sieving, laser diffraction, and sedimentationl). Many techniques involve sedimentation such as the Horiba2, 3) and the Cyclo-sizer1). In the mineral industry, size distribution is usually determined by sieving because it can be carried out accurately for all particle sizes larger than 45 . The preferred method to obtain the size distribution of finer particles is laser diffractometry. The technique has several advantages: it produces measurements in a few minutes with considerably less labor compared with the cyclo-sizer and for a range of sizes considerably wider in comparison with the sedigraph4). The equivalent-sphere size distribution reported by laser diffractometry is valid for metallurgical calculations and can be routinely used in mineral processing plants. The surface area of the particles can be measured by the BET method of nitrogen adsorption, or it can be calculated from the size distribution. However, the latter calculation requires the size distribution to be accurately known across the whole size range, and assumptions have to be made about the shapes and surface roughness of the particles and presence or absence of pores (see below). The BET method is based on the physical adsorption of gas over the whole exposed surface area and measures the surface area stemming from the roughness and open pores on the surface of the particle5). The calculation of the surface area from the size distribution is usually based on the assumption that all the particles are smooth spheres, without considering the shape and/or roughness of the particles. Determining the surface roughness of the particle with these methods, is the objective of this study."

Mexicana de Cobre, which is part of Grupo Mexico, carried out studies for the construction of a copper refinery in the La Caridad Metallurgical Complex located in Nacozari, in the state of Sonora, Mexico. After the studies were concluded, the decision was made to construct a 180,000 t/y refinery using the state of the art permanent cathode Kidd Process. The basic engineering was developed by Fluor Daniel and the detail engineering and the construction were carried out in record time by the Mexican company Bufete Industrial. During the construction phase, Grupo Mexico decided to expand the refinery, and actions were taken to increase its capacity by an additional 120,000 t/y; the final result was a refinery capable of producing 300,000 tonnes of grade A cathode per year. Construction began in January 1996, and the operation of the first stage began on July 1, 1997. The operation of the second stage commenced on January 7, 1998. The capacity of the first stage was reached in November, 1997 and the total capacity of the refinery was achieved in May, 1998. This presentation describes the process and equipment installed in the refinery, the steps leading to the start-up, the operation and the results obtained during the first two years, the handling of anodes with high impurity contents, and the problems confronted and the way they have been solved. It also includes personnel productivity, the control parameters and the most relevant data on the operation of the process.

"Codelco-Chile in the last decade has carried out industrially-oriented research as an alternative to the traditional batch-type converting process. In a first stage carried out preliminary evaluations in a rearranged Peirce Smith (PS) converter, and then an exploratory test in a “Convertidor Teniente” (Teniente converter, TC) for the Codelco-Chile Continuous Converting Process. However, the validation test for this process in the TC was delayed up to the second quarter of 2007 where the validation studies were done satisfactorily.Thus, the objective of this paper is to present the results of the campaign tests validating the Codelco-Chile Continuous Converting Process in the TC1 of the Codelco Norte smelter.The results of charging the solid or liquid matte or high grade matte (“white metal”) by Garrgun, or by mouth of the 22 m x 5 m TC1 are presented. Some features of the industrially validated process are discussed, and the pilot test results of the matte injection are also presented."

The behavior of arsenopyrite under heating has been studied by many scientists. It has been already established that under heating at more than 650°c and without air access the arsenopyrite dissociates with the formation of one atom arsenic. Under vacuum the dissociation process begins at 5500C with the formation of elemental arsenic. The residue of dissociation process contains pyrrhotite and throilite. In the presence of pyrite, arsenopyrite dissociates under lower temperature and with a higher velocity than without it. The industrial realization of fool scale processing of arsenic bearing raw materials is possible only by the use of standard equipment and oxygen containing blast. In this view the paper presents the results of the study on the effect of oxygen in the gaseous phase and its addition into the charge of pyrite in the process of arsenopyrite decomposition. Thermodynamic analyses showed that under thermal processing of arsenopyrite in the presence of pyrite and limited quantities of oxygen in the gaseous phase the formation of arsenic sulfides is possible according to the following reactions:

The paper describes the use of mineralogical methods in the exploration and evaluation of primary diamond occurrences. The most common methods that are used include the systematic search for kimberlitic indicator minerals, surface textural study of the indicator minerals, (garnet, spinel, ilmenite and chrome diopside) and alluvial macrodiamond studies so as to understand their provenance and guide exploration towards diamondiferous targets. The mineral chemistry of the indicator is used to positively assess the origin of the mineral grains and is also pivotal in the determination of the diamond potential of a deposit. Petrography of the primary deposit is able to identify the body to be kimberlitic and is also a support to the mineral chemistry findings. Unambiguous proof of a prospects potential to contain macrodiamond is proven by the occurrence of microdiamonds in the residues from the rock. The presence of a sufficient number of microdiamonds in the rock is enough to determine a semiquantitative grade estimate and warrant further metallurgical evaluation so as to determine its actual macrodiamond content.

This paper analyses the scope and instruments employed by the Basel Convention for regulating the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes, the present and projected hazardous waste regulations of Chile, reviews the Chilean import/export trade of wastes of the period 1985-1995, and discusses, the influence that the Basel Convention has had on mining trade, its perceived benefits and costs, and possible effects on Chile&apos;s trade of the application of the Convention&apos;s Decision III/l. There is no quantitative estimation as to the effect of the Convention on the general volume of imported or exported materials destined for recovery, recycling, reclamation, or reuse. All recycling imports, with the possible exception of residues of petroleum oil, which occurred during the decade 1985-1995, can be classified tentatively as non hazardous. The entry into force of the Convention has had several effects on Chile&apos;s trade. It has brought home the need to have a comprehensive hazardous waste legislation, it has been a base for applying import restrictions, which in all likelihood, would .have otherwise not been applied, The benefits and costs of this import restriction, as well as those of the multilateral export ban are analyzed.

A mineralogical study of copper anodes and copper anode slimes was carried out to elucidate the silver phases present and the behaviour of silver during copper electrorefining. Most of the silver in the anodes is in metastable solid solution in the copper metal. As the copper dissolves, silver also dissolves, but is rapidly removed from solution by a variety of reactions. Some of the silver is precipitated as Ag by cuprous ions and some is precipitated as a complex CU-Ag-Pb-As-Se oxidate phase. Much of the silver, however, reacts with copper selenides to form, progressively, (CU,Ag) 2se, AgCuSe and Ag2se. The reaction commences at the periphery of the selenide grains and progresses inward; the result is commonly a silver-rich species on the outside of a silver-deficient core. Slimes collected periodically throughout the electrorefining cycle show a progressive silver enrichment of the selenides. Traces of Ag2Te also may be present, but the telluride seems to J:ie a rare constituent of most raw anode slimes.

The reasons for injection systems are presented, together with a description of the processes used. This includes a review of injection in crucibles, furnaces, launders, and into special purpose metal treatment boxes. The paper covers both the primary and secondary aluminium industries. IntroductionMany injection technologies are used in the aluminium industry and are in a rapid state of development. This paper provides a review of these systems and presents some thoughts on the possible future application of injection to further improve productivity and reduce losses associated with current applications.The Needs for InjectionThere are many issues facing the process metallurgist in the aluminium industry which call for the application of injection technologies now and in the future. In order to categorise these issues the industry may be broken into primary and secondary aluminium, although some of the concerns occur in both areas.The forementioned issues are variously concerned with improving metal quality, improving productivity, and reducing process problems.The use of injection techniques will be discussed under the heading of solid, gaseous and liquid injections, and the objectives and benefits of each covered briefly."

The Chuquicamata mining and metallurgical complex is the main Division belonging to Corporation Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO-CHILE) and it accounts for 50% of the 1.4 Mt of fine copper output of the Corporation. It has been producing copper since 1915. The paper refers to the challenges that Chuquicamata has to solve in the near future. These challenges are: the increasing operation costs associated to a 800 m depth pit with low prices in an overstocked copper market; the increasing people&apos;s sensitivity to environmental preservation; and, the transformation needed for achieving high levels of organizational effectiveness. According to Corporate policy, Chuquicamata is making efforts to switch from a management style focused on supply to a management style focused on demand side of the industry. In this direction is tempting to establish strategic alliances to develop both new copper products and uses, to rise the metal demand. In more than 80 years of operation, Chuquicamata had exploited just one third of its geological resources. The exploitation of the remaining two third is a huge engineering challenge, taking into account the depth of the deposit, the impurities content, the decreasing ore grades and the transportation distances for waste dumping. All those factors are relevant in the economical process of transforming geological resources into ore reserves. Chuquicamata has other limitations. First, a 20,000 people town just aside the pit that limits the mining rates because of dust generation; second the scarceness of water in the desert area where Chuquicamata deposit is located; and, finally, the new tailing pond is a problem which solution will demand huge engineering efforts and investments. People are the principal factor associated to a company success. In this field, Chuquicamata have been progressing, but much more efforts from people will be necessary to reduce production costs for being successful as any other price-taker within the copper industry. Chuquicamata must develop the skills of its Supervisors to transform them into leaders and entrepreneurs, who additionally have the challenge of passing on their knowledge to non-professional workers. It is an ethic commitment to assure personal and professional growth of workers, as the only sustainable way to get real and integral success.

The behaviour of the lanthanide elements during the precipitation of sodium and potassium jarosites at 98oC from sulphate media was systematically investigated. The lower atomic weight lanthanide elements (La to Gd) are characterized by the limited solubility of their alkali-lanthanide sulphates, such as NaNd(SO4)2?H2O, which commonly contaminate the jarosite precipitates. Hence, single phase jarosite-type compounds were precipitated only from solutions containing <0.4 g/L of the La to Sm lanthanides. The sulphates of the heavier atomic weight lanthanide elements (Tb to Lu) have significantly higher solubilities such that solutions containing up to 10 g/L of the individual lanthanides could be investigated without the precipitation of alkali-lanthanide sulphate species. Even at the highest lanthanide concentrations, however, none of the jarosite precipitates incorporated more than 0.3 wt% of any of the lanthanide elements. Comparable levels of lanthanide incorporation were noted in both Na-jarosite and K-jarosite. Although the mass of the jarosite precipitate increased with increasing ferric sulphate concentration or with increasing pH, the extent of lanthanide incorporation was not significantly affected. Clearly, the trivalent lanthanide elements do not substitute extensively for trivalent iron in the jarosite structure. This behaviour likely reflects the significantly lower hydrolyzability and larger size of the trivalent lanthanide ions relative to ferric ions.

Arsenic plays a major role during electroreflning of copper. Both the arsenic content in the anode and the arsenic concentration of the electrolyte have, in conjunction with other impurities such as lead, antimony, bismuth and oxygen, a direct influence on the quality of the cathode. The mechanisms are currently slime. inclusion and precipitation of insoluble compounds in the bulk of the electrolyte. Arsenic has also been reported to have a depassivating effect on the anode. An influence on the anode slime adhesion has also been found. A literature survey is given and these data are compared with and completed by our own results based on lab and pilot scale experiments as well as on Olen tank.house practice.
