The Sepon Copper Project is located in Laos and has a mineable reserve of approximately 16Mt of ore grading 5% copper with minor gold and silver values. The deposit is a clay-hosted secondary copper mineral suite, predominantly chalcocitic in nature with associated pyrite. The current project design is based on the production of 60,000t/a of LME Grade A cathode by an acid leaching process followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Significant metallurgical testwork was conducted as part of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) with process challenges identified and overcome at each phase of testing. Flowsheet configuration is geared to autogenously generating sufficient acid and ferric iron to meet gangue acid consumption and to leach the copper. The ability to maintain acid and ferric levels in the process liquors is strongly influenced by the proportion of pyrite in the ore presented to the autoclave. This paper will outline flowsheet development from preliminary variability testing to pilot plant and DFS design. The Sepon process solution seeks a balance between operability and capital/operating costs, and provides insights into the basic mechanisms influencing flowsheet selection for these ore types.

It is important to recover and reuse the metal values contained in various industrial wastes in a viewpoint of environmental preservation. Most of industrial products are made through the processes to separate impurities in raw materials, solid and liquid wastes being necessarily discharged as industrial wastes. Chemical methods such as solvent extraction, ion exchange and membrane, and physical methods such as heavy media separation, magnetic separation and electrostatic separation are considered as the methods for separation and recovery of the metal values from the wastes. In this paper, some examples of the application of solvent extraction to the treatment of wastes are introduced. The treatment of solid wastes such as Ni-Co alloy scrap, Sm-Co alloy scrap, fly ash and flue dust, and liquid wastes such as plating solution, the rinse water, etching solution and pickling solution are accomplished using solvent extraction technique.

"The influence of deformation on the properties of short-carbon-fiber reinforced 2024 alloy matrix composites was investigated in this study. It was found that the distribution of carbon fibers changed from the random state before deformation to the ordered state that carbon fibers arranged along the direction of rolling and extruding after deformation. Under the temperature range in control, the increase of rolling and extruding temperature would benefit to improve strength and elongation of composites, but was not conductive to improve the hardness of composites. With the increment of total deformation, all the strength and the hardness of composites became greater, nevertheless the elongation decreased. After being rolled and extruded, the strength and the hardness of composites were all bigger than those of composites before being rolled and extruded; moreover, the strength of extruded 2024 alloy matrix composites was higher than that of rolled 2024 alloy matrix composites under the same heat treatment conditions.IntroductionCarbon fibers have been reckoned as very important reinforcements due to the high specific strength, specific modulus, high thermal and electric conductivity, low expansion coefficient and good self-lubricant properties [1-4]. Light metal composites reinforced with carbon fibers, such as carbon fibers in an aluminum matrix, are widely used and studied. Some studies have concentrated on the interfacial characteristic of CF/Al composites in order to search for the way of improving the bonding between carbon fibers and the matrix alloy [5-8], and on the influence of the carbon fiber percent composition in the composites [9-11]. Some researchers began to take interest in the deforming characteristic and failure behavior of carbon fiber reinforced metal matrix composites [12-16]. However, the same with other metal materials, most of CF/AI composites were prepared by some single processes, such as powder metallurgy, extrusion casting and vacuum press infiltration, which caused that the composites products could not be manufactured directly. In order to cover the shortage of the mentioned above processes and get composites products with perfect mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy, the composites should be reworked by rolling, extruding or forging process. Compared with research about manufacturing process, the correlative investigation on the reworking of CF/Al composites was much less evidently, which restricted the application and the further development of CF/Al composites."

A mathematical model is derived in dimensionless form which simulates the effluent concentration response of reagents from spent heaps under both fresh and recycled water rinsing. The model is based on dispersion from isochoric pathways distributed in length and cross-section, oriented normal to convection channels in ideal plug flow. The effects of heap height, rinsate flow, and initial reagent concentration are examined. It is shown that the rinsing cycle undergoes a distinct shift between fast and slow rinsing at a certain time depending on the amount of stagnant solution in the heap, and the distribution of dispersion pathways. Results of preliminary column rinsing tests on both agglomerated and unagglomerated ores are presented which partially validate the model.

"Human society evolved from an agricultural to industrial and, subsequently, to a service society. As the resource requirements for each stage of this development differ, trends of metal and energy consumption are related to shifts in society. The increase pattern of supplemental energy is similar to that of mineral production throughout the world. Low positive and stable long-term increasing occurred before 1950, whereas they increased quickly after 1950, especially between 1950 and 1973. A substantial decline in· the growth of energy and mineral production began in 1973 and lasted until the early 1980s. Production of energy resources has recently begun to increase again at a high growth rate in the world. Observing the consumption trends of energy and key metals, it is clarified that increasing patterns can be thought in three stages.IntroductionHuman society evolved from an agricultural to industrial and, subsequently, to a service society. Humphreys [4] described that both the non-ferrous metal consumption and the construction material consumption showed a similar trend dropping markedly in the UK over the period 1960-1992. On the other hand, per GDP (Gross Domestic Product) consumption, that is, the intensity of use of construction materials has declined sharply over the past 30 years, more so than the intensity of metal use in the USA [5]. WC-Co nanocomposite powder is among the first group of materials with a promising potential for nanocrystalline-materials application. A chemical vapor synthesis (CVS) process that has previously been used for preparing the aluminides of titanium and nickel, and other metallic and intermetallic powders has been applied to the preparation of WC-Co nanocomposite powder. This CVS system was designed so that a tungsten precursor (WCl6 powder) and a cobalt precursor (CoCl2 powder) were separately fed into each evaporator in a reactor by means of specially designed powder feeders. The reduction and carburization of the vaporized chlorides by methane-hydrogen mixtures produced nanosized WC and Co composite powder. The product is a very uniform mixture of the constituent powders, which is important to ensure a high quality of the bulk cemented tungsten carbide product after consolidation. In the present work, the effects of reaction temperature, CH4 to WCl6 ratio, CH4 to H2 ratio, residence time, and Co content on the powder composition and particle size were determined. The products were characterized using XRD, carbon analyzer, and TEM.

"The Tusc gold deposit is located along the Carlin Trend approximately 13 kilometers north of Carlin, Nevada and 2.5 kilometers northwest of the Gold Quarry mine. Tusc is one of several structurally controlled oxide gold deposits located along the Good Hope fault within the Maggie Creek subdistrict. Mining commenced in 1994 with an oxide reserve of780,000 troy ounces of gold at an average grade of 1.34 g/t Au. The Good Hope fault forms the southwestern edge of the Schroeder Mountain uplift (also known as the Carlin Window) and juxtaposes carbonate rocks of the Siluro-Devonian Roberts Mountains Formation against siliceous mudstone, siltstone, and silty limestone of the Devonian Rodeo Creek unit. Submicroscopic gold mineralization is disseminated in the Good Hope fault system and in fractured hanging wall carbonate rocks. Wallrock alteration includes silicification, deca!cification, sericitization, and late alunite replacement and veins. All Tusc ore is transported 2.5 kilometers to Gold Quarry for processing. Leach-grade ore (0.2 - 1.7 g/t gold) is placed on the oxide leach pads, and mill-grade ore(> 1.7 g/t gold) is processed through the CIL oxide mill. "In Korea, almost all of bottom ash produced by coal power plants is disposed of in ash ponds. Ash storage areas comprise more than 80% of most coal power plant sites. This disposal method is causing environmental problems and a managerial burden for plant operators. In this study, investigations to develop a beneficiation process for separating coal pond ash into various products were undertaken. To improve efficiency of the separation, coal ash was separated by sizes and each size fraction was subject to various beneficiation processes. The separation process used were flotation (-200 mesh size), hindered settling (16x200) and tabling (16x200 and 8x16 mesh). The results showed that various marketable products, such as lightweight aggregate, sand, high-carbon fuel, could be recovered from coal pond ash using simple physical separation techniques.IntroductionDue to the increased use of coals every year, about fifty million ton of coals were used in 2007 alone. As a result, about 6 million tons of coal ash were generated. In Korea, the coal bottom ash is classified as a general industrial waste and is usually disposed of in ash ponds. The costs for this disposal method continue to increase due to rising costs of site management and development and more strict environmental regulation. Therefore, utilities are constantly looking for ways to increase utilization of coal ash. In this study, various beneficiation processes were evaluated to examine the possibility of separating coal pond ash into various products which can be used as aggregates and high-carbon fuel."

"Padwal and Chaturvedi have developed the model based on M-K theory, considering Hosford's yield criterion and critical thickness strain criterion"" to predict the sheet metal forming limits under simple (constant) strain ratio paths. This analysis has been extended in this paper to predict the sheet metal forming limits under complex strain paths. The effects of exponent ""a"" in Hosford's yield criterion and strain paths on the forming limits under complex strain paths are studied using this analysis. The predictions of the present analysis are compared, both for simple and complex strain paths, with experimental results of Ishigaki for A.K. steel and also with the predictions of Rao and Chaturvedi's model. The quantitative analysis of the error in predicting the forming limits has also been carried out using a method suggested by the authors earlier.1. INTRODUCTIONThe constant strain ratio condition has been assumed in the theories developed for prediction of forming limit diagrams (FLO). In actual forming operation, this condition is seldom satisfied. Even in the case of simple single stage press formed components, the strain path becomes curved and non-linear. In the case of pressings with complex shapes, or multiple stages of forming, the changes in strain path are more pronounced and even abrupt.Experimental study of the forming limits, under two stage strain paths, by Ishigaki [1], has shown that the forming limits are path dependent. It has been observed that the forming limits lower than that under simple strain paths, may be obtained under certain strain paths (when the first stage strain path is either equibiaxial tension or uniaxial tension, followed by the second stage strain path as plane strain). Rasmussen's work [2J, on the theoretical study of forming limits under curvilinear strains paths, has shown that a large drop in formability can result from very small changes in strain path. Thus if a deformation process gives rise to failures due to plastic instability, the failure is not necessarily due to insufficient formability of the material. In such cases, FLOs based on constant strain ratio path should not be used directly in predicting the success or failure of the forming operation. Thus the knowledge of forming limits under complex strain paths is of great importance to the interpretation of press-shop problems."

The composition and the possible utilization of Ti bearing blast furnace from a titanomagnetite blast furnace smelter were studied. The slag contained about 20% Ti02 and trace Sc. The mineralogical analysis indicated that Ti in the slag is mainly as perovskite. By means of magnetite separation, the Ti containing phase could not be enriched. An effective hydrometallurgical approach was proposed with sulphuric acid leaching. The method proposed for processing the studied slag renders product Ti02 and SC203. Besides the recovery ofTiO2 and SC2O3' the leaching process yields fine grained residues which can used as additives for making cement.

"The bulk of raw materials in metallurgy of secondary platinum metals are the wastes such as multilayered ceramic-metal systems, e.g. the spent catalysts of the chemical and petrochemical industry, automobile catalysts, etc. Due high chemical resistance of a ceramic basis the extraction of platinum metals by leaching even at very fine crushing is poor. The study of sorption leaching of platinum and a palladium from the spent automobile catalysts are carried out. The average content of PGM is 0.5%. A few methods of raw materials sampling were compared: 1) direct hydrometallurgical leaching of platinum metals from the fine-grained catalyst and atomic absorption analysis of the obtained solutions; 2) fusion to a metal or sulphidic collector of precious metals with the alloy analysis by direct spectrometry; 3) fusion with dissolution of a precious metals collector and atomic absorption analysis of PGM in solutions. Leaching allows detecting out no more than 90% of a palladium and 80% of platinum. Fusion to a collector gives the best results at the chemical ending. Researches on sorption leaching are executed. Under optimum conditions the extraction of platinum metals to concentrates is comparable with similar indicators of collector fusion.The large part of raw materials in metallurgy of secondary platinum metals are the multilayered or tridimensional ceramic-metal systems, in particular the spent catalysts of the chemical and petrochemical industry, automobile catalysts, ceramic-metal condensers, etc. The content of the sum of PGMs can be from hundreds grams per ton to several percent. For processing of such materials the hydrometallurgical methods of platinum metals leaching by various reagents are used commonly. High chemical resistance of the ceramic basis covering the metal particles causes low recovery even at very fine grinding. Other fundamentally different method of catalysts opening includes dissolution of the ceramic basis in the solutions of hydrofluoric acid and the subsequent recovery of platinum metals from insoluble residue. Application of this method is associated to use of corrosive medias and appropriate equipment. Fusion of the specified materials with collecting of PGM by copper, nickel or lead at the specialized enterprises provides higher extraction in semiproduct. At the same time, complexity and duration of the subsequent extraction of platinum metals concentrates causes high total cost per unit. Thereby this method is economically acceptable only for rather poor raw materials (no more than 0,1%). Undoubtedly, that the raw materials with the high content of PGM are reasonable to process by individual technology. In the present work the processing of some kinds of ceramic-metal raw materials, particularly automobile catalysts (neutralizers) with various collectors at the conditions of a target fusion are investigated."

The electrorefining of primary copper is a well known technology: in this work copper scrap was directly processed in the same way. he copper and copper alloy scrap was previously pressed by means of a 20 tons apparatus in order to avoid pyrometallurgical operations. The samples obtained in this manner showed a good compactness so that they were used as anodes in the electrorefining tests. The tests were carried out on anodes made by copper scrap, copper alloy scrap and a mixture of the two. The electrorefining tests were performed at both 303 and 333 K, in a perspex cell having a volume of 500 ml using a current density of 250 A/m2. The cathode used was always a sheet of pure copper and the electrolyte composition was 40-50 g/l Cu as CuS04 and 150-200 g/l H2SO4. Current efficiency in the range of 92-97% and specific energy consumption ranging from 0.14- 0.20 kWg of copper were reached in all the tests. The refined copper deposits were analyzed by AAS to verify their purity and observed by SEM to highlight their morphology.

"Brazil has a large agricultural potential and its production success is related to the chemicaland physical soil characteristics. Therefore, the demand in the use of a great quantity offertilizers to compensate the low amount of nutrients in the soil includes about 40% of foodproduction costs. In order to develop economical alternatives to traditional fertilizers, rockswith potential use in agriculture will be studied. In this work the potassium rock, a greensandslate, will be chemically and structurally characterized for the development of a potassiumthermophosphate. This alternative fertilizer will be obtained based on a fusion of a ponderedmixture of potassium, magnesium and phosphate rocks to be applied in the Brazilianagriculture. Keywords: thermodynamic, Ni-Co alloy powders, composition, fibrous The mathematics model of Ni(II)-Co(II)-C2O42?-NH3?H2O-H2O of thermodynamic equilibrium system has been developed theoretically according to the law of conservation of mass and the law of simultaneous equilibrium, and the logarithm concentration-pH (log[Me2+]T-pH) diagrams of this system have been made. The effect of ligand and pH value was studied. Two issues in coprecipitation route to synthesize fibrous nickel-cobalt alloy precursor powder, com-position and morphology which are a first priority, are addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and experiments. The results show that suitable pH value range of coprecipitation of nickel ions and cobalt ions in theory can be obtained to maintain fibrous, excellent compositonal homogeneity and stoichiometry in coprecipitation products. Experimental demonstration is also carried out.

"Electro-assisted reduction is an effective pretreatment to render chalcopyrite less refractory towards oxidative leaching. In this process, chalcopyrite is selectively converted to chalcocite or copper metal in an electrolytic cell under ambient conditions, while ferrous ion is leached into solution. However, the reaction velocity is hampered by the formation of a ferrous sulfide passivating layer on the solid surface, especially at elevated solid to liquid ratios. In the present work, several strategies for overcoming this problem were evaluated. On one hand, specific ligands for ferrous ion were added in order to increase its solubility and, on the other, an anode material which promotes the oxidation of the sulfide ion was chosen. Leaching tests showed citric acid to be an effective ligand for both ferrous and ferric ions and, in combination with a lead-silver anode, significantly increased the kinetics of chalcopyrite reduction and subsequent copper leaching.IntroductionAttempts to oxidize chalcopyrite at a rapid rate in aqueous solutions, below their normal boiling point, have met with difficulties because of passivation by some of its own components. An alternative line of research explores reductive pretreatment, transforming the chalcopyrite into less refractory copper phases, which can later be oxidized. Stainless steelmaking dust is classified as a hazardous waste due to higher than acceptable heavy metal leachabilities such as zinc, lead, cadmium and chromium. In addition to being an environmental hazard, the flue dust is also an economical concern to stainless steelmakers as it contains large amounts of valuable alloying elements, especially for iron, chromium and nickel. A new technology of direct recycling of stainless steelmaking dust has been developed to recover the metals from the dust. But it was found that zinc was accumulated in the dust collection system in practical run of direct recycling. This study focuses on the effect of the operating parameters such as temperature, dust feed rate and the ratio of CO to dust on the reduction of zinc oxides present in the dust. The mathematical model for the reduction process was setup based on the experimental research. According to the mathematical model, the temperature has obvious effect on the reduction of zinc. It is benefit to the process of zinc reduction to increase the temperature. But the temperature will not be the main factor for the reduction process after 1228C. It will promote zinc reduction to decrease the dust feed rate and control the ratio of dust to CO. It was also found from the experiments that ZnFe2O4 in the dust could be decomposed at high temperature. Decomposing ZnFe2O4 in the dust increases the recovery of zinc from the dust distinctly.

Tellurium in raw slime has recently been recovered as copper telluride in Onahama Smelter & Refinery. The slime is decopperized with sulfuric acid solution in conventional leaching tanks. The pregnant leach solution containing 45 g/l of copper and 1 g/l of tellurium is introduced to a copper telluride recovering reactor. The tail solution from the reactor containing less than 20 mg/l of tellurium is recycled directly to circulation tanks of copper electrolysis. The impurities of the product copper telluride is kept below 1% without any purification.

The Hikoshima smelter carried out an expansion project in 1997 and increased its production from 59,200 t/y to 71,000 t/y. The leaching process and the casting process had production capacities of 84,000 t/y, but because of the electric power situation in Japan, the production capacity in the electrolysis process was limited to 59,200 t/y to justify the production cost. Electrolysis was the bottle neck of the plant. In order to eliminate a part of this bottle neck, and considering the electric power situation in Japan, a way to increase the production during the time when the electric power rate is low was sought. In practice, we increased the number of cells by 36, and further improved the operation procedures in the cellhouse. For example, we improved the working efficiency of the cells, improved the productivity during the night time, decreased the unit power consumption and improved labor productivity. Accordingly, this paper describes the recent operations at the Hikoshima plant.

The physical and chemical properties of sinter feed are important factors that determine the productivity and quality of sinter product. In this study the feasibility of treating sinter feed by high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) is investigated for selective cracks generation exploiting weak zones along grain boundaries of poor quality iron ores without generating much fines. The pre-treated sinter feed was characterized for size distribution, surface area, contact angle, and SEM analyses. The characterization results indicated that surface area of the pre-treated sinter feed sample increased about 20%. Pot-grate sintering tests results also indicated improvement on cold permeability, sintering yield and productivity, sinter Tumbler index, and low temperature degradation index (LTD) after HPGR pre-treatment.

A strain of Thiobacillus ferruuxidans No. 8 was isolated from the acidic mine water of an arsenopyrite deposit, South China. It has been found from the experimental results that the growth of bacteria was inhibited by flotation agents. The order of toxic effect of different flotation agents on the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is ethyl xanthate > butyat ammonium aerofloat > butyl xanthate ? isobutyt xauthate >? flother No. 2 oil. The bioteaching treatment of arsenic and antimony-bearing gold concentrate in Longshan mine, Hunan province, China, was influenced considerably by the presence of flotation agents. The possible causes of the influence of flotation agents were discussed and an improved method was suggested.
