Non-ferrous metals and metals in general are considered as being non-renewable natural resources. Metals are needed because of their excellent and irreplaceable properties. The consumption of metals, with the exception of carbon steel, is steadily growing by 1-3 % annually, and that of stainless steel as much as 3-6 %. This is a general trend, which is periodically disturbed by cyclical variations. In recent years so-called "New Economy" has become prominent in the public media and the market value of the traditional industry has been well below its real value and importance. Nevertheless, the modem society requires metals today and also in the future, and the companies using the most modem technology in a responsible way and innovative solutions not only in technology, but also in everything they do will survive. This paper describes the role of Europe as a producer of primary base metals and as a supplier of technologies in the base metals industry. It concentrates on the development and commercialization of technologies and project implementation in the metallurgical industry. As one example of a European approach to these matters the paper presents Outokumpu' s response to the future challenges in the base metals industry. Outokumpu Oyj is one of the leading metals and technology companies in the world of stainless steel, copper, zinc, and sales of technology in metals and minerals businesses. Outokumpu applies its knowledge of metals and processing to generate value for its customers and shareholder. Everything we do, we do in an economically, environmentally and socially responsible way.

The close proximity of cobalt and nickel on the Periodic Table and their frequent occurrence together in nature means that their separation in primary hydrometallurgical flowsheets is not only often necessary, but requires the use of innovative chemistry to achieve high selectivity. Today, increasingly stringent demands for the high-purity cobalt and nickel salts required for battery applications in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and solar applications are again challenging the state of the art. The evolution of cobalt–nickel separations is traced from the basic precipitation technologies employed in 1960s, through commissioning of the first cobalt solvent-extraction plant in South Africa in 1974, to the commercialisation of organophosphinic-acid extractants (which provided a step-change improvement in selectivity) and their eventual widespread use in the 1980s and ’90s. This was followed later by their sulphur analogue, which enabled different possibilities for laterite processing in the new millennium. Separations in chloride media, which take advantage of the different speciation chemistries, and nickel extraction by oximes in ammoniacal systems are also discussed. More recently, chelating and solvent-impregnated resins have added further dimensions to the possibilities for flowsheet design and enabled higher purity products to be attained from both primary and secondary sources. Selected case studies and flowsheets are described.

After 32 years of operations beneficiating lateritic nickel ore in a fully integrated pyrometallurgical complex, Falconbridge Dominicana (FALCONDO), situated at Bonao and La Vega Provinces, Dominican Republic, has become profitable with one of the lowest nickel grade content processing plants in the world, and literally without any by-product (granulated slag, will be utilized in the future as a post-processing subproduct). To December 2002, mineral reserves were 64.1 million tonnes containing laterite grading as low as 1.15 % Ni when full dilution is applied. At a cut-off grade of 1.20% Ni, the reserves will provide 15-20 years of production. The mineralized thickness over the seven active deposits averages 6 m. Development of very selective and unique mining practices, together with improvements in the process plant, are key to achieving the production goal (30 kt Ni/yr) and to meet the quality standards for the ferronickel produced. "The curricula for the majority of Materials Science and Engineering programs is devoid of all but the most rudimentary coverage of the principles of material and energy balance calculations. As a result, graduated engineers that need to make such calculations are faced with three unpalatable options. First, attempt to learn the subject by attending workshops or short courses sponsored by corporations or industry groups. Second, outsource the needed work to a consulting engineering company. Third, purchase a software package that's capable of simulating a process. Each of these options require a considerable investment of employee time and effort. The first option might be the best if suitable computational software was readily available. We review the recent development of such software, which is entirely based in Excel. The software tools include a thermodynamic database, tools for multiple computations, and a flowsheet simulation program. These tools employ teaching by simulation.IntroductionPracticing engineers often come up with situations where they must learn a technical subject that they didn't cover in their college classes. One possibility is to obtain a couple of texts on the subject, and delve in. Or, they may sign up for an intensive short course where they can get personal instruction and guidance. But the first option requires a lot of study time, and the second option may not provide the specific instruction (or intensity of instruction) required to appropriately master the subject. Here we look at ways of using simulation techniques to learn the methodology for making material and energy balances on industrial processes.Industrial heating processes have undergone many changes over the past dozen years, as vendors have introduced new heating equipment designed to recover the greatest possible amount of heat from the fuel, and to meet stringent environmental challenges for emissions (especially NOx). Even though the recent unprecedented drop in price of natural gas may have altered the urgency for improving a plant's energy efficiency, the need is still there. Until recently, there was a dearth of readily-available software for process engineers to use for simulating a plant's flowsheet. The good news now is the existence of several Excel-based software tools that make the calculational process much easier. [ 1]. Plant engineers may also be interested in a DOEsponsored program[2] which allows plant-wide and ""what-if' analyses of the energy balance."

Managers are frequently faced with the decision to perform a task or manufacture an object in-house or to hire an outside vendor to perform the function. Outsourcing decisions are usually driven by economics: work is outsourced if it can be completed at a lower cost or in a shorter time than it can in-house. A technique termed incremental analysis can be used to make this decision. Incremental analysis examines the financial impact of outsourcing decisions as a function of the firm's fixed and variable operating costs. To use this tool, individual components of production cost are identified as being either constant or varying with levels of production activity. The assignment of cost type can be made in several ways: though analysis of historical operating data, understanding of individual expense types, and so forth. Changes in fixed and variable costs resulting from each potential course of action are explicitly identified to project the financial outcome of each alternative. The alternative having the greatest positive impact on profit is selected for implementation. By using the fixed- and variable-cost framework, the analysis is conceptually straightforward and substantially simplified. Production managers can therefore use incremental analysis as a tool for fast economically beneficial decisions on a real-time basis.

"Molten aluminum and nickel cast onto a steel block exothermically react and produce molten nickel monoaluminide, NiAI, which is simultaneously joined to the steel. The heat of the exothermic reaction is transferred to the steel block, and steel near the surface of the block is melted. The depth of the melted steel increases with both the initial temperature of the steel block and the thickness of the produced NiAI. Iron from the melted steel dissolves in the molten NiAI, and an intermetallic compound of NiAI-Fe pseudo-binary system is produced. During solidification of the intermetallic compound, it is strongly joined to the steel. The Ni.Al-Fe intermetallic compound has an excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion.IntroductionAn intermetallic compound of nickel monoaluminide, NiAl, offers many advantages over conventional superalloys, such as higher melting temperature, lower density, greater specific modulus and higher thermal conductivity [1]. NiAl also exhibits excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance when doped with zirconium or hafnium, and excellent high-temperature corrosion resistance when doped with chromium or yttrium, that are superior to existing high temperature alloys or coating materials [1-4]. On the other hand, NiAI is significantly brittle at temperatures below 600 K [5-7], which is the most sigriificant disadvantage of NiAI. A possible way to overcome the disadvantage and to utilize NiAl as an environmental-resisting high-temperature structural material may be joining of NiAl to a ductile material."

Recovery of aluminum metal from drosses? is a major factor in the recyclability success story enjoyed by the United States aluminum industry. Today's modern dross processor uses the latest technology to maximize metal recovery at the lowest cost while complying with all environmental laws and regulations. Most dross processors, however, pay little attention to the resulting saltcake, the end residual of dross recyCling, and rely on landfills for .disposition of this material.. The alternative is to recycle the saltcake, but the success of this technology is dependent on the development of reliable outlets for each of the saltcake constituents. This paper discusses the evolution of an aluminum dross oxide processing technology that ,produces an economically attractive source of alumina for the production of portland cement.

"This paper proposed a new method of Mg and Cl2 circulating for titanium sponge production by direct pyrolysis and thermal reduction process. Effects of pyrolysis temperature, pyrolysis time and partial pressure of oxygen on pyrolysis efficiency were researched, and the crystallite structural transformation of MgO productions at different pyrolysis temperature and time were analyzed by XRD. The experimental results indicates that the pyrolysis temperature and time effects the pyrolysis efficiency obviously, and the reasonable pyrolysis conditions by using MgCl2 in molten state are as follows: the pyrolysis temperature is 1100?, pyrolysis time is 60min and the partial pressure of oxygen is 100%, the pyrolysis efficiency get above 95% at this conditions. The dynamic analysis of molten magnesium chloride pyrolysis reaction shows that, as a chemical reaction process control, the response of the apparent activation energy Ea=70.4 kJ/mol.IntroductionTitanium is a young metal, it is applied in industrial until the Second World War. It is 160 years from the discovery of titanium to the industrial production of ductility titanium by magnesium reduction method in the United States in 1948. As a new kind of metal, titanium and titanium material are better than the traditional metal materials in mechanical properties, heat resistance and thermal conductivity. Titanium is a kind of landmark structure and function material, which is called “space metal”, “Marine metal”, “Intelligent metal” [1-3]. Although the study of new methods of titanium melting get more at present, Kroll method and Hunter method are really applied to industrial production methods for titanium smelting, and Hunter method is already discontinued because of costs at present. The core technology in Kroll method of sponge titanium production process can be ome down to two circulation, namely the cycle of magnesium and chlorine in preparation-process of titanium sponge. In the traditional Kroll method, the cycle is realized through magnesium chloride which is produced by the electrolytic magnesium reduction process in hot molten state. But because investment of equipment for electrolysis method is too high, this method has not been used by most titanium sponge production enterprise in China. At present most titanium sponge production enterprise in China produce titanium sponge by the outsourcing of titanium tetrachloride, but the main disadvantage of this method is that the by-product of magnesium chloride is difficult to deal with."

This paper reviews the requirements for good sampling practice, and how conflicting requirements for good furnace operation and design often makes reliable closure of the metallurgical balance tenuous at best.
