This paper shows the application of the porous plug system in the Mitsubishi continuous copper smelting and converting process. This system has already been adopted and utilized in the steel industry to enhance productivity. Recently, some copper smelters have adopted this system but the results have not been satisfactory. The porous plug system was installed at the anode furnace in December 2001 to reduce the oxidation time and decrease the oil consumption. A good effect was that the nitrogen stirring of the melt through porous plugs improved the melt heat transfer. As the result of the enhancing heat transfer the oil consumption and the build up inside the furnace were actually decreased. But until now the oxidation time has not been sufficiently reduced. In the future, further research and tests are needed in order to increase the productivity and save costs.

"A new method for separating inclusions from a molten metal using a high magnetic field has been proposed. The principle of this method based on the magnetization force has been confirmed in experiments of separating intermetallic compounds imitating inclusions from molten Al-Si-Mn-Fe and Al-Si alloys. In order to measure a magnetic susceptibility, the Gouy's method has been so modified by using a super-conducting magnetic as to work in a high temperature up to 1473K. A theoretical expression for the magnetization force, which is indispensable to evaluate the magnetic susceptibility, has been derived. The magnetization forces acting on intermetallic compounds which were used in the magnetic separation were measured over the range of liquidous to solidous temperatures and the magnetic susceptibilities of the intermetallic compounds were obtained from measured magnetization forces by use of the theoretical expression.I. IntroductionRecent developments in the technology of super-conducting magnets have given rise to the circumstance that a high magnetic field over a relatively large space is readily available without liquid helium. Then, it has been found that a high magnetic field provides magnetic effects to nonmagnetic substances and various interesting phenomena have been reported in the broad science fields of physics, chemistry and biology1). ""A science related to a high magnetic field"" in which many fields are transversally viewed from the standpoint of a high magnetic field2 ) is going to be established. In particular, new phenomena and functions brought by the science related to a high magnetic field are also useful for Material Science and Engineering so that the creation of Materials Science and Engineering related to a high magnetic field"" has been conceived 3).Now, when a substance regardless of being magnetic or nonmagnetic is put in a magnetic field, it feels a magnetization force, which is familiar to such a force that a magnet attracts iron. The force is in proportion to the product of magnetic field strength, its gradient and susceptibility so that a precipitated substance can be separated from a molten metal based on the difference between susceptibilities of a substance and a melt. This is a basic principle of the magnetic separation. So far the application of the magnetic separation has been limited to the separation of ferromagnetic substances from a nonmagnetic medium. A high magnetic field, however, has enabled to separate nonmagnetic substances from a nonmagnetic medium.In this study, a new method to separate inclusions from a molten metal using a high magnetic field has been proposed. The principle of the method was verified by experimental works and the feasibility on the elimination of inclusions in steelmaking processes has been studied"

"In Hanaoka Mine, which was one of the major ""black ore"" (Kuroko) mines in the north part of Japan, mining has finished in 1994, and only mineral processing plant is available now. Recently this mineral processing plant has been applied to the soil washing. Soils contaminated with heavy metals are excavated and transported to the plant. The soils are separated to cleaned soil and metal enrichment through the process which consists of scrubbing, classification, extraction, insolubilization, flotation, and so on. The process is flexibly designed for each contaminated soil, in order to the products can be recycled as cleaned soils or metal sources. . Soils contaminated with arsenic and lead were treated in 1999, which were entrusted from Environmental Agency of Japan.IntroductionDowa Mining has had the mine site named ""Hanaoka Mine"" and ""Kosaka Mine"" in the north part of Japan. Those mines consisted of some ore deposits and produced ""black ore"" (Kuroko) and ""yellow ore"" (Oko), which are complex sulfide ore. The ""black ore"" mainly consists of sphalerite, galena and barite with accessory chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and Au, Ag minerals. The ""yellow ore"" mainly consists of powdery and clayey ore containing chalcopyrite and. pyrite, with a little sphalerite and galena. Each mine site had mineral processing plant respectively, ""Hanaoka Mine"" had two and ""Kosaka Mine"" had one plant. Those plants were operated by flotation process to separate each mineral, and produced concentrates of copper, lead, zinc, pyrite, barite and so on.Unfortunately, the mine had closed one by one because of change in economical circumstances and the lack of ore reserves. Mill plants were also closed and dismantled, but the last ""Matsumine mill plant"" of Hanaoka Mine was remained to be utilized usefully. In the circumstance like that, we came across with soil remediation business. Recent reports say that subsurface contamination in Japan is being grown substantially and that it can be a serious matter beyond the imagination of our society. So nowadays we have a tendency to pay attention to the environmental issues including subsurface one."

The use of Composite Furnace Module cooling systems has been shown to give improved refractory performance in a number of above bath locations in WMC flash furnaces. To test the behaviour of modules in contact with a melt, a set of instrumented modules have been installed in the reaction shaft of a. nickel flash furnace. The location was chosen to provide a suitably harsh environment to ensure rigorous testing, while still allowing relatively easy access for module installation. The modules were continuously monitored to provide information on the module performance, as well as the temperature in the shaft itself. The shaft temperature showed significant transient behaviour, which resulted in heat fluxes through the modules ranging from 10 to 92 kW m-2. The modules were capable of handling the highest heat flux with no risk of the coolant boiling. This paper details the design and operation of the modules over a period of seven weeks.

The sticking behavior of iron ores in the shaft furnace is one of the most important problems in the COREX melting progress, which directly influence the smooth operation and productivity of shaft furnace. Therefore, it is of great importance to study the sticking behavior of pellets in COREX shaft furnace. The results showed that porous metallic iron produced at the interface of pellets samples was the main reason for the sticking of pellets in the COREX shaft furnace. The SI (sticking index) and metallization rate increased with the reduction temperature and gas flow, and decreased with melting rate. However, the SI of pellets in the COREX shaft furnace could be decreased by the proper match of melting rate and reduction temperature, reduction temperature and gas flow, while the metallization rate of pellets were kept at a certain level. Furthermore, the matching of melting rate and reduction temperature was more effective than the matching of reduction temperature and gas flow.

"Confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) has been applied to carry out the in-situ observation of melting and solidifying characteristics during iron ore sintering process, accompanied with TG-DSC test. It can be found that apparent Liquid phase forming temperature(LFT) and ending solidifying temperature(EST) is about 1190? and 1160?, respectively. Forming liquid phase during sintering process goes through four courses, these are shrinking, expanding, shrinking and expanding coexisting and expanding totally. For Yandi fine, the corresponding temperature of these four courses is about 1120-1160?, 1190-1196?, 1218-1220? and 1233-1270?, respectively. Although CAJ fine has more difficulty in forming initial liquid phase, but when liquid phase expands, it may have better fluidity and easier for liquid phase formation. Adding enough CaO, CAJ fine takes on high fluidity like Yandi fine, because liquid phase during sintering process is formed mainly by reaction between CaO and Fe2O3.IntroductionConfocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM for short) has been applied to carry out the in-situ observation of metallurgical phenomena, especially in steelmaking process. This study sought to produce L(+)-calcium lactate using precipitated calcium carbonate as a starter culture composite of lactic acid bacteria in lactic acid fermentation. Specifically, precipitated calcium carbonate was synthesized by reacting calcium hydroxide with sodium carbonate in the previous study by the authors. Synthetic precipitated calcium carbonate was then used as the calcium source of lactic acid bacteria during the fermentation process. In general, precipitated calcium carbonate has low absorption rate in the human body. On the other hand, calcium lactate has high absorption rate; it is commonly used in food and drug industries as calcium additives in various foods such as cookies, beverages, bread, sauces, powdered milk, and fruit juice. Calcium lactate has two racemates, e.g., L(+)-lactate and D(-)-lactate. In particular, L(+)-lactate is known to be more soluble than D(-)-lactate and generally produced from lactose by homo-fermentative lactic acid bacteria such as Lactococcus spp., Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus curvatus, and Pediococcus spp. Thus, the characteristics of the pertinent lactic acid bacteria and optimal condition such as temperature, pH, precipitated calcium carbonate addition rate, and content of fermentation for increasing formation yield and purity were investigated. The findings suggested the possibility of manufacturing L(+)-calcium lactate using precipitated calcium carbonate as a calcium source with high value-added instead of commercial calcium lactate.

The electrolytic reduction mechanism of rare-earth chlorides such as LaCl3, CeCl3, NdCl3, ` SmCl3 and DyCl3 in alkali chloride baths has been investigated in NaCl, KCI and eutectic LiCI- KCI by means of electrochemical transient methods. The thermodynamic behaviors of rare-earth containing species have been discussed in the frame of Electrode potential - P02- diagram. Low current efficiency found in the case of Nd electro-winning has been attributed to the dissolution of Nd into the bath. The analyses of electrochemical measurement required the elucidation of the effects of the factors such as under-potential deposition, metal dissolution, moisture and oxygen partial pressure.

In Si and FeSi production, the main Si source is SiO2, in the form of quartz. Reactions with SiO2 generate SiO-gas that further reacts with SiC to Si. During heating, quartz will transform to other SiO2 modifications with cristobalite as the stable high temperature phase. Transformation to cristobalite has been investigated and shown to be a slow process where the rate varies between the investigated quartz types. The effect of quartz versus cristobalite as SiO2 source has been studied for reaction (1) 2SiO2 + SiC = 3SiO + CO, by heating of pellets with SiO2 + SiC in Ar-gas. The reaction was faster with cristobalite than with quartz. Initial experiments indicates that this is the case only in Ar and not in CO-atmosphere The higher specific surface area of cristobalite is believed to contribute to the higher rate. The industrial consequences of the observed difference between quartz types are discussed.

"Numerical simulation on the fluid flow in a Flow-Control Mold (FC-Mold) were performed. The motion of inclusions were calculated. With FC-Mold, the flow pattern and surface velocity become more symmetrical, and at higher casting speed the velocity of liquid steel in the top region of the mold was largely reduced with the highest velocity of the meniscus reducing from 0.65 mis to 0.4 mis, and the meniscus shape became flatter. With FC-Mold, more inclusions approached to the surface of the slab and the amount of inclusion in the center of mold became fewer. Larger inclusions were easier to remove, however, the EM filed of the FC-Mold could hardly improve the removal of inclusions from the molten steel.IntroductionElectromagnetic brake technology is an effective method to control the flow pattern within continuous casting mold, together with other casting parameters, nozzle design and mold geometry [1-5]. Due to the interaction between the applied magnetic flux and the conductive molten steel inside the mold cavity, a force is generated in the direction opposite to the jet flow, which can decelerate the high speed steel jet from the SEN ports. The potential benefits include fewer surface and internal defects, fewer inclusion especially at higher casting speed. However if used imperfectly, electromagnetic forces can have opposite effect [6]. Numerical models are the best tool to optimize electromagnetic flow control. In the current study, numerical simulation was performed to investigate the flow field in a continuous casting FC-Mold, and the effect of different operation parameters on the flow, surface level and velocity in FC-Mold were discussed."

"Industrial scale testing was performed in the plant-site of Bor Company. Charging sample was from 4-5 tons for each particular test. All operations in industrial scale investigations were carried out in one furnace. For the aim of successful realization of experiments, and primarily for safety and prevention the risk of toxic contamination the working environment, a plant was designed and constructed for cooling and wet dedusting of gases formed during smelting process, zinc removal and flame refinement of molten metal. For the requirements of industrial investigations a complete plant for cooling and wet dedusting of gases has been constructed for brass scrap processing. In this plant, the original ultra-sonic water spraying devices have been installed. The efficiency of such simplified system for gas treatment has been 98,6%. Introduction Permanent development of techniques and technology causes formation the considerable quantities of secondary raw materials that are much more relevant as the raw material base for many metals. Due to a fact that large quantities of metal, are concentrated in the waste materials, large consideration is given to this topic, and numerous technologies for this waste recycling are developed in the world nowadays. High energz price and permanent increase of metal price on the world market have made that secondary raw material tretament, for the aim of various metals production, becomes more and more relevant in the world. In comparison of metal production using enrichment and metallurgical treatment of primary raw materials, the non-ferrous metals production from secondary raw materials has a range of advantages, as well as: - Low level of capital investments, - High technological recovery of qualitative secondary raw materils, - Considerably low consumption of energetic resources regarding to the treatment of primary raw materials (ore and concentrate), - Reduced consumption of unrecoverable mineral resources, - Reduced enviroment pollution [1,6]."

The fluid flow in the mold during up-hill teeming is of great importance for the quality of the cast ingot and therefore the quality of the final steel products. At the early stage of the filling of an up-hill teeming mold, steel enters, with high velocity, through the nozzle into the mold and the turbulence on the meniscus could lead to entrainment of mold flux. The entrained mold flux might subsequently end up as defects in the final product. It is therefore very important to get a mild and stable inlet flow in the entrance region of the mold. It has been acknowledged recently that swirling motion induced using a twist tape swirl blade, in the submerged entry nozzle is remarkably effective to control the fluid flow pattern in both the slab and billet type continuous casting molds, resulting in increased productivity and quality of the produced steel. From the above result, we propose, swirling flow generated through a swirl blade inserted into the entry nozzle, as a new method of reducing the deformation of the rising surface and the unevenness of the flow during filling of the up-hill teeming mold. The swirling blade has two features: (1) to generate a swirling flow in the entrance nozzle and (2) to suppress the uneven flow, generated/developed after flowing through the elbow. The effect of the use of a twist tape swirl blade was studied using both numerical calculations and physical modeling. Water modeling was used to assert the effect of the swirling blade on rectifying of tangential and axial velocities in the filling tube for the up-hill teeming and also to verify the results from the numerical calculations.

The particle dispersion phenomena in a turbulent gas jet of the flash smelting process has been investigated. The particle number density in a non- reacting jet was measured experimentally by taking photographs of the particles in flight and counting them using the image analysis. Numerical computations were also performed using a mathematical model for a turbulent particle laden gas jet The experimental particle number density data were then compared with the predicted results of the model. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental and predicted data. The effects of the parameters such as the injector design, particle loading and air flow rate are discussed. Optimization of the concentrate burner design can be achieved with the help of experimental and theoretical simulation as performed in this work.

In recent years, ENAMI implemented modernisation plans at its two smelters in order to meet the government's environmental regulations introduced in the early 1990s. The modernisation plans defined the new SO2 and particulates emission targets, deadlines for compliance, and the revised treatment capacities of the smelters. At Las Ventanas smelter, the principal process change consisted of eliminating the reverberatory furnace. All the smelter feed is currently processed in a 4m diameter, 14m long Teniente Converter, using up to 34% oxygen enriched air. Dry concentrate is injected into the bath through tuyeres. A fuel oil burner compensates for any process heat deficiency. The Teniente Converter high copper content slag is cleaned in an electric furnace. This furnace is also used to melt internal reverts. This paper will discuss the successful operation of the slag cleaning electric furnace.

"This paper describes several applications of Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) in gassolid two phase flows. A new image reconstruction algorithm was evaluated by both simulation and experiments. It is then applied to the online measurement of solids distributions in square circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) and good results were obtained. From the measurement of solids distributions in the bottom zone of a CFB, a bubbly fluidization pattern is identified. A cross-correlation technique was combined with the solids concentration measurements to obtain the flow rate through the dip leg of the cyclone, i.e. the circulating rate of a test CFB. The same· technique was applied in a dense phase pneumatic transport pipe provides the solids concentration, and the flow rate of a wavy gas-solids flow.IntroductionElectrical capacitance tomography (ECT) has been developed for imaging multiphase distributions in the 90's of the ·last century. It is a non-intrusive method. The principle of ECT can be firefly described as follows:Firstly ECT uses a number of electrodes to surround the measuring zone, depicted by Fig. I. The capacitances between the electrodes are measured in turn and an array C is obtained that contains a total number of m independently measured capacitances. Meanwhile the measuring zone is virtually divided into a grid of n pixels, represented by an array G, named the image vector, the gray level of each pixel represents the local value of the concentration of the material. As the material distribution will be reflected by the capacitances between each pair of electrodes, such distributions can be reconstructed according to the measured capacitance, a process called image reconstruction. A common image reconstruction method is called linear-backprojection (LBP). It linearize the relationship between the dielectric distributions in the measuring zone and the capacitances between the electrodes as the following:"

"Work was performed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), in collaboration with industrial refractory manufacturers, refractory users, and academic institutions, to employ novel refractory systems and techniques to reduce energy consumption of molten material processing vessels found in industries such as aluminum, glass and pulp and paper. The energy savings strategies discussed are achieved through reduction of chemical reactions, elimination of mechanical degradation caused by the service environment, reduction of temperature limitations of materials, and elimination of costly installation and repair needs. Key results of several case studies resulting from US Department of Energy (DOE) funded research programs are discussed with emphasis on applicability of these results to high temperature processing industries.IntroductionRefractory materials are limited in their application by many factors including chemical reactions between the service environment and the refractory material, mechanical degradation of the refractory material by the service environment, temperature limitations on the use of a particular refractory material, and the inability to install or repair the refractory material in a cost effective manner or while the vessel is in service. All of these limitations reduce the energy efficiency of the process as degraded refractory materials lead to loss of process heat (reduced insulation by refractories) and the need for maintenance through repair or replacement of refractory linings.This situation is conceptualized in Figure 1 which shows that when the thickness of the refractory wall is reduced by chemical or mechanical degradation, the heat losses through the wall increase exponentially. The subsequent maintenance to repair such conditions often requires cooling of the furnace or refractory lined vessel which entails loss of energy due to cooling and consumption of energy due to reheating. Additionally, production time and capability are sacrificed.Additionally, in most applications where refractories are used (metal melting furnaces, glass furnaces, steel making furnaces, gasifiers, etc.) wear of the refractory lining is not uniform. Very often, specific areas will wear (become thinner) more rapidly due to exposure to more corrosive or erosive conditions. This concept is illustrated in Figure 2, through the example of excessive metal line corrosion."

Tetrahedrite and siderite are two main valuable minerals present in the silver Mária Bana deposit. The tetrahedrite concentrate prepared from it by flotation has certain specific properties from the metallurgical point of view. Siderite is concentrated in the flotation tailings. The paper presents results of the laboratory and pilot-plant testing of the combined hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical methods proposed for treatment of the tetrahedrite concentrate and siderite waste. The testing conditions were based on thermodynamic analysis of the reactions that proceed in the process. The proposed technology makes it possible to separate copper from sulphur, mercury and iron in a straightforward way. Copper, after its refining, can be subsequently treated in the finishing operations. At the same time it is a valuable source of precious and noble metals. The siderite-containing flotation tailings can be converted to iron of the technical purity and slag. The proposed method is a good starting point for the development of the closed-cycle technology.

Recycling of aluminum scrap, such as Used Beverage Container (UBC) scrap is steadily increasing. In secondary remelting of such scrap, it is a common practice to use protective molten salt cover. An appropriate salt protects metal from oxidation, promotes coalescence of the suspended metal droplets, and separates clean metal from the oxide contamination. The molten salt also reacts with metal. This causes metal loss and change of resulting metal composition. In this paper, role of molten salt fluxes in melting of UBC scrap is discussed, and selection criteria for molten salt are provided.

Noranda's Altonorte custom smelter, located in the 2nd region of Chile, 20 kilometres southeast of the city of Antofagasta, started operations in 1993. Presently, 1150 tonnes per day of new feed are smelted with an 85% sulphur capture. An oxy-fuel reverberatory furnace produces a 48%-55% copper matte that is treated in 13 ft. x 36 ft. (3..96m x 10.97m) Peirce-Smith converters (two hot and one blowing). Up to thirty percent of the new concentrate is smelted via dry concentrate injection into the converters. This paper reviews the development of the concentrate drying and injection system, and oxygen enrichment at Altonorte from start-up in 1995 to the present time. The relationship between oxygen enrichment and concentrate injection is reviewed from a theoretical and practical standpoint. Concentrate injection has improved the smelter's productivity and added flexibility to the operations. Due to the relatively high matte grades and the subsequent short converting times, maintaining consistent operations was difficult at times and the smelter has gone through a learning curve. Plant operating results and experiences are presented on the impact of concentrate injection in relation to: feed treatment, blowing times, revert generation, slag quality and refractory wear.
