The complexity of this rare earth ore and the associated problems encountered in ore preparation, desliming and flotation in beneficiation during the development study stage and the solutions to these problems are reviewed.

The economics of microbial coal desulfurization are affected significantly by the proper selection of the plant site and by maintenance of variables at suitable levels. High sulfur coal particles below 200 mesh show sulfate production rates triple those with 150 mesh coal but grinding costs are greater. Slurry solids density increases from 5% to 20% reduced the rate constant by a factor of 10. Coal added to a batch reactor in the stationary phase resulted in a sudden second exponential sulfate production phase indicating feasibility of lower cost continuous operation. Successful operation in the absence of beef broth, yeast or added nutrients at non-sterile conditions enhanced projected economics. Finally, the need for adequate agitation and aeration was well established.

New measurements have been made on the equilibrium distribution of selenium and tellurium between molten slag and metal phases. Distribution coefficients of Se and Te between magnesia-saturated calcium ferrite slag and copper or silver alloys were measured over the temperature range 1473 and 1673 K under controlled oxygen patrial pressures of 10-11 to 10-0.68atm. The results demonstrate that the minor elements are present in the calcium ferrite slag as the selenide (Se2-) and telluride (Te2-) respectively, up to a PO2 of 10-6 atm. As conditions become more oxidising, Te undergoes a transition to the divalent oxide whereas Se does not. Increasing the temperature was found to enhance partitioning of the minor elements to the slag. In terms of activities, at 1573 K, Se showed strong negative deviation from the ideal behaviour in the slag, while Te showed only slight positive deviation.

The presence of clay adversely affects the floatability of copper and molybdenum during processing porphyry copper/molybdenum ores. In addition, reagent consumptions are much higher than when treating clay-free ores. Ores containing kaoline, brammollite, illite and montmorillonite were examined in the laboratory to determine how clay minerals affect the floatability of copper and molybdenum, and to find a possible solution to alleviate the harmful effect of clay slimes. It was demonstrated that the presence of clay mostly affects floatability of coarse and middling particles, and reduces selectivity. The results of the research work showed that there may be several possible ways of reducing the detrimental affects of clay slimes on flotation, some of which include a) use of alternative flowsheets, b) flotation at reduced pulp density, and c) the use of special frothers. The applicability of the findings in plant practice are discussed.

The magnetic properties of (NdDy)15Fe78B6 sintered magnets have been evaluated using powder prepared by Inert gas atomization. The atomized powder had a particle size distribution from 1 to approximate 1000 microns. The as atomized powders have been sieved into, coarse, intermediate, and fine fractions; magnetic properties were evaluated for the as produced powder and each fraction. A B, of 11.7 kG, a Hci of 11.0 kOe and a BHmax of 32.5 MGOe was -obtained on a sintered magnet made from the as-atomized powder. The magnet made from coarse powder exhibited a slightly higher B, of 12.1 kG, while that from fine powder showed a decrease in B, to 11.2 kG. Hydrogen decrepitation has been utilized to study its effect on the magnetic properties. Finally, cast ingots with a definite columnar structure have also been used to compare the magnetic properties of magnets of the same nominal, composition but of different alloy preparation process. Hydrogen decrepitation does not appear to improve the magnetic properties of magnets made from thin cast ingots. However, it does show a significant improvement in the Hci of magnets made from the atomized powders. Possible causes for the differences in the magnetic properties on magnets made from each process have been discussed in the paper.

Platinum and palladium are usually dissolved together and followed by separation. In this study, the selective leaching of platinum and palladium from a secondary resource, such as dental waste, by using chloride solution (hypochlorite and chlorate) has been developed. Results indicate that about 100% of palladium could be initially extracted by the combination of 0.3 mol/L sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and 0.068 mol/L sodium chloride (NaCl) at pH 1.2 and 298K in 1.5 hours, or the combination of 0.005 mol/L sodium chlorate (NaClO3) and 6 mol/L hydrochloric acid (HCl) at 298K in 0.5 hour. About 100% of platinum could be extracted from the residue by the combination of 0.47 mol/L sodium chlorate (NaClO3) and 12 mol/L hydrochloric acid (HCl) at 298K in 2 hours.

Using the k-e turbulence model, a mathematical fluid dynamics simulation of the flow characteristics in a Teniente converter has been conducted. Two cases were studied: - Transversal sections in the smelting-converting zone; and - A three-dimensional simulation that includes the walls of the reactor The calculations give the velocities field, the gravity waves amplitude, the splashing behaviour, the phase distribution and the shear stress distribution. The latter helps to explain the pattern of refractory lining wear. The calculation includes the approximate shape and dimensions, and the eventual coalescence of bubbles.

Reactions between solids and a gas phase have many interesting theoretical aspects as well as technological applications. The present group had carried out experimental investigations as well as theoretical studies of a number of gas-solid reactions over the past decade and was able to derive interesting results. Studies of the decomposition of alkaline earth carbonates were carried out by thermogravimetric analyses. The experiments were carried out using thin powder beds as well as iso-statically pressed compacts with thermocouples embedded in the same. The investigations revealed the complexity of the reactions and the impact of the heat- and mass transfer aspects on the reaction kinetics. In the case of BaCO3, the kinetics of decomposition was complicated by the formation of a liquid phase. In the case of SrCO3, the reaction kinetics could be simulated by theoretical modeling. Gas-solid reactions were also employed as a versatile process tool towards the production of alloys and intermetallics involving transition elements by hydrogen reduction of complex oxides involving transition metals. Thin powder beds were employed to examine the micro-kinetics, while fluidized bed technique was utilized to produce bulk alloys. Preliminary correlations could be drawn between the thermodynamic stabilities of the oxides and the activation energies of chemical reduction steps. Adjusting the process parameters, products at nano-scale could be produced. The structural, mechanical and thermal properties were investigated in the case of these products. The potentialities of this method as a green route to produce industrially important alloys and intermetallics with unique properties are demonstrated.

This paper discusses the use of a reacting CFD model to determine chalcopyrite kinetics in a drop tube furnace and to predict the reaction of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the reaction shaft of an industrial smelter. Reacting CFD codes can be applied to determine the consequences of the interaction of gas with particles and therefore improve the ability to derive kinetic parameters that take into account the temperature and oxidation histories that different particles will see. This paper describes the application of such a model to derive improved kinetic parameters for the pyrolysis and oxidation of chalcopyrite. The reaction shaft model includes the effects of turbulent fluid mechanics, entrained flow mixing, turbulent particle dispersion, heterogeneous particle reactions, radiative and convective heat transfer, and' surface and bath deposition rates. Particle reaction and composition characteristics are predicted as a function of particle trajectory and deposition and are used to aid in evaluating shaft performance.

The process of synthesizing silica nanopowder by the gas phase thermal oxidation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) in a diffusion flame reactor was simulated using a commercial computational fluid dynamic (CFD) code. The fuel combustion process and silica particle formation and growth in the flame are modeled. The temperature, velocity and particle size distribution (PSD) fields inside the reactor are computed. Chemical reaction rate and population balance model (PBM) were used to calculate the particle formation and growth and PSD.

LG Metals Corporation started its second smelter operation at Onsan along with the existing flash smelter on January 31, 1998. Onsan smelter has been producing about 140,000 tons of copper annually from concentrates with the flash smelting line since 1979. In accordance with an increase in domestic copper demand, LG Metals Corporation decided to expand smelting and refining capacity by introducing a second smelter line using the Mitsubishi continuous process and a new tankhouse in 1995. After two years' expansion works consisting of engineering, procurement, construction and a successful commissioning test, the total smelting capacity of Onsan smelter increased to 340,000 ton of copper annually from concentrates.
