"Rare earth elements (REE) are essential and unique components of many high-technology products without which functioning of modern society would be greatly impaired. Commercial deposits of REE are limited to a few geographical locations. Largely untapped sources of REE are available in endof- life (EOL) magnets, rechargeable batteries, and electronics. Presently, < 1% of REE in EOL wastes is recycled. Conversion of EOL wastes to liquid streams allows use of IBC’s Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process to selectively recover, separate, and purify target REE and associated metals at g/L to mg/L or lower concentration levels. The MRT process together with its applications to separations of REE and associated metals in recycling as well as in mining are described. Economic and environmental advantages of MRT are presented. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) include the lanthanide series (La-Lu), Y, and Sc. These elements are not rare, but concentrated minable deposits are scarce (Cordier 2012; Haxel, Hedrick, & Orris, 2002). Over 95 % of the world’s supply of REE is controlled by China (Hanson, 2011a) where they are mined, processed, and the pure elements incorporated into a growing number of consumer and military products. The consumer products are marketed worldwide. Since REE are vitally important in consumer and military products, this situation has caused other nations to scramble to develop the capability to produce their own supply (Cordier, 2012).In the U. S., Molycorp has reopened the Mountain Pass REE mine in California and production has begun (Goldenberg, 2010). Development of a reliable internal source of REE is of high national priority in the U.S. (Hanson, 2011b; Hess, 2012: “Obama Announces”, 2012). These elements have in recent decades been incorporated into new consumer and military products that are essential to our economy and defense. These products range from wind turbines, high performance magnets, hybrid car rechargeable batteries, energy efficient lighting electronics, flat screen televisions, and smart phones to advanced weapons systems (Haxel et al., 2002; Levkowitz & Beauchamp-Mustafaga, 2010)."

"Feasible and sustainable separation of lanthanides outside of China has been a dilemma for the past few years. The present technique uses REE electrophoretic mobility (Ui) variation in an electrical field to separate them. The present invention relates to a system and a method to separate and refine rare earth elements/compounds produced in hydrometallurgical processes while they are dissolved in an acidic medium, without any intermediate precipitation step. This process uses free-flow electrophoresis to isolate REE from the concentrate simultaneously without any pre-treatment or intermediate steps related to the nature of elements.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) invariably occur together in nature, and any given mineral contains several or most of them. Production of high purity individual rare earth (RE) elements/compounds from their ores generally requires two stages of processing, including mineral processing and hydrometallurgy.Depending on the ore, mineral processing and hydrometallurgy treatment of the ore before REEs purification is relatively simple and quite achievable though conventional methods. However, producing individual REE from mixed REs compounds is tremendously tedious. RE processing often requires dozens of steps, each resulting in minute improvement in the complex RE streams. Separating and extracting a single REE requires a great deal of time, resources, and expertise. Today, advanced RE refinery facilities cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build. The high purity RE concentrates are separated into individual REE using solvent-based or ion exchange methods. Although there are several techniques to separate REEs, most of them suffer from different types of drawbacks. For instance, solvent extraction requires a great number of steps to achieve high purity REEs. The process which uses ion-exchanger for separation and refinery operates with low REE concentration in solution which leads to very large liquid volume quantity, bulky tanks, dehydrators, pumps, etc. The low concentration will adversely affect the water consumption as well as other chemicals. Similar chemical properties of those three valent elements do not allow them to be isolated easily one from one another using conventional separation techniques. Solvent extraction has been successfully applied for rare-earth refining (lanthanide, scandium and yttrium) for the past few decades in China. Since then, efforts have been dedicated to develop other techniques which could be applied industrially around the world."

Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical materials in many leading-edge technology products. However, REE separation outside China has remained a challenge in addressing environmental concerns of current production. The author has worked on a technique employing the emphasised variability in the electrophoretic mobility (μi) of REE for the purpose of REE separation. In continuation of the results presented in IMPC 2016 [1], this contribution summarizes the progress achieved in 2016 and 2017. The major goal was to increase the REEs concentration by a factor of 1000 and to attenuate the consequent drawbacks, specifically joule heating effect. Amphiprotic hydroxylic solvent was selected to replace water, which has a major impact on the complexation mechanism and buffer requirement. Non-aqueous media result in a significant drop in the specific molar conductivity of the electrolyte, whilst μi reduces several times only. Moreover, a quasi-steady state electrophoretic separation in conjunction with temperature gradient focusing is adapted to improve scalability.

In order to realize the resource utilization of spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst, a solvent extraction-oxalic acid precipitation process is studied in this paper for efficiently recovering vanadium, nickel, and aluminum from the acid leaching solution of spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst. The process conditions for extracting vanadium with Cyanex 272 and precipitating nickel using oxalic acid as a precipitation agent were explored in detail. The results show that vanadium (IV) in the sulfuric acid medium containing nickel and aluminum was efficiently and selectively extracted by Cyanex 272. After three-stage countercurrent extraction, the extraction efficiency of vanadium was 99.76%, and the co-extraction efficiencies of nickel and aluminum were only 2.47% and 1.87%, respectively. Thermodynamic calculation shows that the extraction of vanadium (IV) from the sulfuric acid medium with Cyanex 272 is an endothermic reaction. The innovative method of oxalic acid precipitation was used to recover nickel from the raffinate, achieving selective extraction of nickel from the solution containing a high concentration of aluminum. The precipitation efficiency of nickel was 98.58%, while that of aluminum was only 0.75% under optimal conditions. The proposed flowsheet for the separation of vanadium, nickel, and aluminum from acid leaching solution may provide a new idea for the comprehensive recovery of valuable metals from spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst.

ABOUT the beginning of 1930, coal preparation had reached the stage where the cleaning of coal by liquid or air had become the order of the day. Since that time many new preparation plants have been installed in spite of the years of depression in the coal industry, and this is indicative of a trend wherein the coal producer found it expedient to manufacture a cleaner product in order to compete with other fuels. It was also about 1930 that, because of the difficulties encountered with fine coal in cleaning plants, dust collectors came into use. Both cleaning plants and dust collectors, therefore, were much discussed at the engineering meetings of the early 1930&apos;s. During these meetings the many advantages to be gained through the use of dust- collecting systems were pointed out by Hebley,1 Appleyard2 and others. The great possibilities of new markets for this product were emphasized and discussed at the same time; however, the disposal of the collected dust remained a problem. Since the purpose of dust collecting is to improve the preparation and, consequently, the salability of the coal, it seems illogical to return the collected dust to any of the coal being prepared for market use, as is done in preparation plants that include dust-collecting systems. The logical thing is to dispose of the dust in some useful and practical manner outside of the tipple. As a practical matter, this can be done in one or both of two ways; either by consuming the dust at the mine&apos;s own power plant or by marketing the dust direct to the consumer. The latter method not only offers the greatest opportunities, but is the most important, because of inequalities that may exist between the quantity of dust collected and the consuming capacity of the mine&apos;s power plant. In considering the more important marketing possibilities, we are confronted immediately with the problems connected with the handling and transportation of so fine a material. It is this problem, rather than the problem of finding new markets, that has been responsible for the lack of progress in the matter of dust disposal. It is the purpose of this paper to point out again some of the potential market out- lets, and also to describe an existing system of handling and transporting coal dust. To the best of the writer&apos;s knowledge, this is the first and only operation in this country that has handled fine-mesh coal in bulk so-ton lots direct to the consumer. POTENTIAL MARKETS FOR FINE- MESH COAL DUST In general, the potential market outlets would include any operation of which the pulverization of coal is a necessary part. "The three-dimensional complex multiphase turbulent flow in U-beam separators was simulated using the Reynolds stress equation models (RSM). To account for the effect of the stochastic characteristic of the instantaneous gas velocity on the particles, the improved Lagrangian stochastic model based on the Reynolds stress model for gas phase was adopted, which attributed to the successful prediction of the turbulence anisotropy and particle crossing trajectories effects. The interaction between the particles was also considered using the HardSphere model. To treat the particle-wall collision, the influence of the roughness of the wall on the motion of the solid particles was taken into consideration by imposing random collision angles. The result from this study not only shows the dynamic characteristics of the multiphase flow- in the separators, but also gives the relationship among the efficiency, structure and pressure losses of the separator.IntroductionCirculating fluidized bed (CFB) combustion is one of the most promising clean coal techniques. A main feature of CFB boilers is the un-delayed recycle of solid, coal and sorbant particulate, in an external loop. Separator, which is required to separate the solid particle from the flue-gas leaving the reactor of CFB, plays an importance role in the external solids recycle loop. It affects the combustion of CFB system greatly. Presently cyclone is the most commonly used as separators for CFB system and other chemical industrial processes. It provides high level of separation for CFB system for fine particles. However it suffers from some inherent disadvantages. It's volume and size is huge. Moreover, it is difficult to design and install when the CFB workload rises. The application of U-beam separators instead of hot cyclone separators in CFB boilers has many advantages. Publications indicate proposals or successful use of Ubeam separators in Swedenr11, USA 21, Russia r3land China [4]• But it is not possible to find results in the literature of detailed investigations of this new. type of separators or recommendations on the choice and calculation of an optimal design. For this reason, numerical simulation for the three-dimensional gas-particle two-phase flows with several rows of vertical U-beam elements, local in the chess order and blocking a way of outgoing from a CFB boilers dusted gases was carried out in this study."

"Flotation of arseno bearing minerals from their copper ore has been an interest due to the increasing awareness on protecting the environment by minimizing the possibility of exposed arsenic compound. Some approaches have been proposed, but the mechanisms of separations have not yet fully understood. In this study, oxidation using oxygen was applied. Instead of the complex copper ore flotation results, pure single mineral of tennantite and chalcopyrite foatability was conducted using Hallimond tube. Resembled with the flotation results of copper concentrate containing tennantite, the separation possessed the best result at alkaline condition (pH 11) at where the arsenic content was reduced from 3300 ppm to 1800 ppm. In order to be able to understand the mechanism of the separation atomic force microscope (AFM) was utilized. AFM images showed changes in morphology and behavior when minerals were treated in both acid and alkaline condition. It was found that the morphological change showed the reaction products representing the rate of reactivity of tennantite and chalcopyrite. From the measured force of adhesion, it can be observed that in alkaline condition the surface of both minerals is more hydrophilic than that in acidic condition possessing higher value. This is in accordance with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra in which hydroxide moieties occupied the mineral surface in alkaline condition while elemental sulfur is in acidic condition."

Two innovations in nickel-arsenic separation have been studied on a laboratory scale. The first requires only a nitric acid atmospheric leach without preliminary roasting and leads to favorable final conditions for precipitation of arsenic as highly stable FeAsO4, The second is an NaOH-H2O2 pressure leach which is an alternative to the known NaOH-O2 pressure leach. Either method offers the possibility of rapid and efficient separation of nickel from arsenic and is applicable, for example to the high grade niccolite deposits in the Great Slave Lake area of northern Canada.

In the conventional alkaline leaching of concentrate containing nickel, copper and cobalt, copper is usually removed from the system, prior to nickel reduction, by sulphide precipitation. A new process is described for the selective extraction of copper and separation from cobalt and nickel, using liquid-liquid extraction. General Mills LIX-63 dissolved in a kerosene diluent is the extractant. Trace amounts of co-extracted cobalt and nickel are easily removed by a scrub treatment, and copper is recovered from the extract by sulphuric acid stripping, thus providing a solution amenable to the oroduction of electrolytic copper. Estimated processing costs are included together with a proposed flowsheet.

"Electric vehicles are an alternative to the existing combustion engine driven cars. According to the EU Battery Directive a substantial recycling rate of at least 50 wt.-% has to be met for aged batteries since 2006. Existing recycling techniques are based on energy intensive pyro- and hydrometallurgical process, which are not able to recover all components. Aluminum and lithium for instance are slagged. The EU-Project “ABattReLife” investigated possibilities for a mechanical processing in order to create a sustainable process and a closed material loop from grave to cradle. After a sufficient liberation of the Li-ion batteries, components like the doped carbon black fraction (mainly lamination of electrode foils), the separator foil and the housing material can comparatively easily be separated from the other components by screening and air sifting. The remaining mixture consists of anode and cathode foils which have a similar free-settling ratio and are more difficult to separate from each other. A second comminution and compaction step modifies the particle size and shape as well as the degree of delamination. These changes influence the density of the electrode foils in order to improve the separation efficiency. Yield and purity of the generated metal concentrates were parameters to show if the separation was successful. The specific energy consumption for the different methods of processing was estimated in order to benchmark the cost-benefit ratio for each one.The studies have been accomplished with a zig zag sifter (model TUBAF), a hammer mill (model HM 340 Jehmlich) and with a Petkus-Sifter. Finally a process flow sheet was developed for a Li-ion battery recycling plant in pilot scale."

In this study, a process to separate manganese and iron from manganiferous iron ores by reductive acid leaching followed by magnetic separation was conceived and experimentally tested. In the leaching process, sulfuric acid was used as lixiviant and oxalic acid was used as reductant. The experimental results showed that the manganese and iron separation was optimal when the concentrations of the sulfuric acid and oxalic acid were 0.75 M and 30 g/L, respectively, at a temperature of 80 °C, a solid/liquid ratio of 67 g/L, stirring speed of 400 rpm and leaching duration of 60 min. Under these conditions, 90.49 percent and 6.78 percent of Mn and Fe were dissolved, respectively, from the ore sample in a size fraction of smaller than 106 µm. It was determined that the leaching of manganese from the ores was a second-order reaction with activation energy, Ea, of 53.38 kJ/mol. The leaching residues obtained under the optimal conditions were subjected to wet high-intensity magnetic separation tests to recover the remaining iron content. This separation process produced a concentrate containing 56.20 percent Fe and 1.79 percent Mn with iron and manganese recoveries of 56.83 and 66.73 percent, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a magnetic separation process was used on a residue obtained from the reductive acid leaching of manganiferous iron ores to recover iron.

In this study, a process to separate manganese and iron from manganiferous iron ores by reductive acid leaching followed by magnetic separation was conceived and experimentally tested. This separation process produced a concentrate containing 56.20% Fe and 1.79% Mn with iron and manganese recoveries of 56.83% and 66.73%, respectively. A magnetic separation test from an unleached ore sample was also carried out as a benchmark. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a magnetic separation process was used to a residue obtained from reductive acid leaching of manganiferous iron ores to recover iron.

Probably our best source of information on the separation of minerals by the use of alternating-current magnetic fields today is the reports from the U. S. Bureau of Mines5-7. It is not the purpose of this paper to tell the reader in detail how to make a commercial separator. Experimental models have recently been made7 and the results obtained have been so good that it is the opinion of the authors that the public will soon take an active interest in the subject and its development. The writers have constructed a separator that is considerably different in construction and operation from the two types described by Mr. Davis. This will be described, but the real purpose of this paper is to outline certain experiments and give curves showing data that have a fundamental bearing upon the practical construction of a separator of this type.

Cooling crystallization was used to separate iron (III) and nickel (II) from acidic sulfate solution produced by leaching of molybdenum-nickel black shale. The effect of K2SO4 concentration, crystallization temperature, solution pH and crystallization time on recovery of nickel (II) and precipitation of iron (III) was investigated, in order to obtain effective separation of nickel and iron. The optimum parameters determined were as follows: 200 g/L K2SO4, 10 °C crystallization temperature, solution pH of 0.5 and 24 h crystallization. Under these conditions, 97.6% nickel (II) was recovered as K2Ni(SO4)2, 6H2O crystals and only 2.0% of the total iron (III) was precipitated. Recrystallization yielded K2Ni(SO4)2, 6H2O crystals with a purity of 98.4%.

In terms of a sustainable waste management, high recycling rates and purities of the different collected waste components are very important. Especially the recycling of used packaging materials with valuable components like plastics, ferrous and non-ferrous metals and liquid cartons (light weight packaging) requires a complex technology. In plants to recycle those light weight packaging materials films cause problems and often manual sorting is necessary to remove them. The Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences together with the company Schulz & Berger from Altenburg tries to replace manual sorting with fully automated technologies. The objective is a technology that can enable a high recovery of recyclable film and satisfy the maximum purity requirements for the film fraction. For that purpose, a new machine called Low-pressure Separator was developed. The test materials used consist of separately collected recyclables from the yellow recycling bins or bags in Germany?s Dual System (Duales System Deutschland ? DSD), the recyclable waste collection system. First tests show that high purities of the film-fraction, for example the required 92% or higher, can be realized. Next to the film-purity, furthermore the mass yield and the recyclable yield are discussed because they play an important role to evaluate the efficiency of the recycling process. Further activities to improve and establish the developed technology are mentioned.

Mercapto organic compound SDMP was used as a depressant for separation of copper activated marmatite from pyrrhotite in the presence of butyl xanthate. Flotation results show that SDMP has strong depressing effect on pyrrhotite recovery in the absence and presence of copper ion, but has promotional effect on marmatite recovery when added together with copper ion. The flotation test of mineral mixtures shows that copper-activated marmatite could be separated efficiently from pyrrhotite using SDMP as depressant. Infrared adsorption spectra demonstrate that SDMP has a strong adsorption on pyrrhotite surface through its functional groups such as ?SH, -S03.

In this work the extractive and selective capacities of solvent extraction synergistic systems to recover nickel and cobalt were evaluated. The liquor used was from the high pressure acid leaching process (HPAL). Initially the industrial liquor, processed from lateritic ores, was analyzed to identify the concentrations of the metals. Experiments of synergistic solvent extraction were performed later. The extraction liquid-liquid was carried out with a mixture of Cyanex 272 (CY) and Ionquest 290 (IQ) extractants. The process was executed with the temperature of 65 ºC, pH of 5.2 and the ratio aqueousorganic 2:1. Systems of 80% kerosene and CY 20%, CY 16% - IQ 4%, CY 12% - IQ 8%, CY 8% - IQ 16%, CY 4% - IQ 16%, IQ 20% were studied during 20 minutes. The results of this paper showed that the mixture of these two extractants doesn’t improve significantly the recovery of nickel and cobalt from liquor.

Recycling of solid wastes, a common practice nowadays, requires the separation of the different materials in order to increase the products added value. The separation of one plastic from mixtures of different types of plastics is not easy due to their similar physical properties, but different techniques are available, from automatic sorting systems based on optical sensors to techniques adapted from mineral processing, namely gravity, froth flotation and electrostatic processes. In the last decade, many researchers have addressed the separation?s problem of different polymers, like Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), two polymers commonly used in packaging which have similar density. One proposed technique is the classical froth flotation performed in agitated cells. Froth flotation is a versatile and relatively cheap process widely used in mineral separation. It is based on the different behaviour of particles in the presence of an inter-phase air-water, which depends on the materials surfaces properties. Froth flotation can be affected by some variables such as impeller speed and air flow rate. Agitated cells, when used with low density materials, like plastics, can produce overstated turbulence that prevents the adhesion and collection of particles in the froths. In this case, separation is favoured by column flotation smoother hydrodynamics. This paper proposes the separation of PET from PVC by column flotation. The experimental work was carried out in a column of 9cm diameter and 1m high. The effects of some operating conditions, such as depressor and frother concentration, air flow rate and feed grain size on products grade and recovery were evaluated and the best flotation conditions for the separation of these plastics were established.
