IT would doubtless have been felt by many but a few years back that there was little left to be said on the subject of crucible tool-steel, and that something akin to finality had been arrived at in its manufacture and general treatment. Probably such feeling was justifiable when it is remembered that the making of steel in crucibles is by far the oldest method known, dating back from time immemorial, it being indeed impossible to accurately trace its origin and earliest development; but it seems certain that carbon-steel was made and used thousands of years ago for cutting-tools. Proof of this may be seen by the marvelous carvings and workings on the intensely hard stone-work of the ancients, for it would be difficult to conceive by what means, other than with steel tools, such work could have been executed; and it is wonderful to contemplate that steel cutting-tools should have been used so long ago, whilst the principle of manufacturing them-that is, by fusion of iron and charcoal in crucibles-was then in a measure on the sane lines as we work on at the present day. Archaeologists have discovered that the Chinese made steel in crucibles long before the Christian era. " Wootz " steel fabricated in India centuries ago was crucible steel, as was also the celebrated Damascus steel, produced at the forges of Toledo, and, curiously, this latter steel furnishes' yet another proof that "There is nothing new under the Sun," for it is recorded that Damascus steel contained certain percentages of tungsten, nickel, manganese, etc., some of the very elements, in fact, contained in the present modern high-speed steel, so that a latent high-speed steel may be said to have existed

Gunite was invented in 1907 by Carl Akeley to repair a crumbling facade of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago. The method used was to blow dry material out of a hose with compressed air and inject water at the nozzle as it was released. In 1911, he was granted a patent for his invention, the ‘cement gun’; the equipment used; and ‘gunite’, the material that was produced.The advantages of using the dry mix process is that the water content can be adjusted instantaneously, allowing more effective placement in overhead and vertical applications without using accelerators. The dry mix process is useful in repair applications when it is necessary to stop frequently as the dry material is easily discharged from the hose.This paper describes the applications and principles of the gunite pump system in underground coal mining and discusses why it is the preferred spraying system for both cement and plaster products.It also addresses improving productivity and examines dust, respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and health issues around gunite pump systems. Fire safety requirements inside tunnels have become more demanding as tunnel designers consider the impact of potentially larger fires. Tunnel ventilation equipment is required to clear hot gases in the event of a fire. This is vital to maintain smoke free escape routes for people trapped in the tunnel and to facilitate safe access for emergency services. As the fire becomes larger, the temperature of clearing hot gases increases. Traditionally, engineers have taken into consideration gas temperatures of 250°C when designing tunnels. Because of larger fires, engineers must now design equipment to clear hot gas up to 400°C.Increasing the temperature of hot gases to 400°C requires tunnel ventilation equipment that goes beyond historic limits. As temperature rises, material strength reduces, consequently mechanically constraining fan aerodynamic performance. Developing tunnel ventilation equipment suitable for clearing hot gases at 400°C requires a fan technology that is more typical of industrial turbomachinery. The standards EN 12101-3:2002 and ISO 21927-3:2006 defi ne the necessary design criteria and testing methodologies to verify that a range of tunnel ventilation equipment is capable of extracting hot gases.This paper describes the process by which the authors certified in accordance with EN 12101-3 and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 21927-3 a range of powered ventilators suitable for clearing smoke and hot gases at 400°C for two hours. Proving the high temperature capability of the new range provided a challenge as a consequence of the large physical sizes and high motor powers involved. Additionally, the need to install vertically, as well as horizontally, imposed high thrust loads on motor bearings, further complicating both mechanical design and testing. The paper presents the methods by which the authors overcame these challenges.

The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

The development of a robust belt sampling strategy and protocol inunderground gold mines is a fundamental requirement for effective grade quality control, ore accounting and mine-mill reconciliations. As part of the ore management system, a belt sampling system has been developed by the author, which is used to predict monthly gold grade and its error for underground/belt/mill reconciliation and grade control. This paper presents the step-by-step development of the belt samplingstrategy and sample preparation protocol at Target, an underground gold mine in South Africa. The belt sampling system at Target consists of an underground belt transporting run-of-mine material into an underground transfer point, a weightometer, a two stage crushing system, a tube splitter and a catchment device. The design allows run-of-mine ore on the belt to be sampled automatically by a go-belt sampler. GyÆs sampling theory of particulate materials forms the basicframework of the belt sampling strategy. The theory is used to quantify the optimum sample mass of broken material to be taken from the belt and to predict its reliability. It is also employed to determine the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE), time interval between samples and particle size requirements of the final underground belt sample. Further, GyÆs sampling theory provides the means of analysing the crushing processes, splitting, segregation error, analytical variance, and the best sample preparation protocol. Although the belt sampling strategy developed in this study was forWitwaterstrand gold ore, the process is entirely general and may be very successfully used in any underground or surface mine.

Developing a mining venture in a foreign country, particularly in South Africa, can be a real challenge to those involved in the operation. The mining division of Southland Energy Corp. was asked to offer consultative support to the New Union Gold Mine, located in the Giyani District, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, to aid in their expansion from an approximately 65 tonne per day exploration- exploitation project into a full scale mining operation of 300 tpd by January, 1987 with further expansion to 600 tpd by mid-year. This paper ad- dresses the development of the expansion plans, which are presently being implemented. History. Located in the Northern Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, the New Union Gold Mine is part of what is known as the Klein Letaba gold fields. Gold prospecting in the Klein Letaba gold field area dates back to the earliest years of European prospecting activities in the Transvaal where, reportedly, gold was discovered as early as 1887 (figure 1). The claims com- prising the present New Union Gold Mine have been explored by a number of individuals and relatively small mining groups since the early 1930's. The work done by these entities was aimed at recovering as much gold as possible in the quickest and cheapest manner possible and, as a result, the area was not explored in a systematic fashion. The long-term potential of the area, therefore, was not known until very recently.

Smelters of medium or low grade tin concentrates must recover a high proportion of tin from iron-bearing slags or concentrates; the volatility of tin sulphide makes possible the production of iron-free tin fume. Laboratory work defined conditions which would promote the sulphidisation of tin slags and concentrates melted with them, to result in tin recovery as fume, and a residue of less than 0.5% Sn content, which could be controlled to vary with the value of tin. Subsequently pilot-plant work on 6-tonne and 15-tonne scale led to a commercial plant of 45 tonne. capacity (1962), for melting and fuming primary and secondary low-grade tin materials by submerged combustion. Some factors contributing to the rate of Working expressed in terms of the 'half-life and the amount of work done, the 'half-life-tonne' are studied, leading to the design and operation (1972) of the 100-tonne water-jacketed unit, presently in use, treating a wide range of slags and low tin-content ores and residues.

AK6 is a Cretaceous aged kimberlite located in the north-east of Botswana, close to Debswana's Drapa and Letlhakane Mines. It was discovered by Debswana in 1969, but was considered unattractive from an economic perspective. In 2003, Debot Prospecting Pty Ltd ('Debot') re-assessed the area and with the advent of new prospecting technology, particularly large diameter drilling ('LDD') and more detailed ground geophysical surveys found AK6 to be of interest. In 2005, the Boteti joint venture was formed between Debot and African Diamonds plc ('AFD'), which covered a number of Prospecting Licenses, including that which contained AK6.

The Trojan Tailings Pond at Highland Valley Copper developed in only 15 years from a biologically inactive water body into a productive lake with a well established aquatic ecosystem. This process was assisted by a few simple and inexpensive procedures including fertilization and introduction of essential organisms. The success at the Trojan Pond has encouraged the use of similar techniques in other water bodies on the mine site. This paper details: ??The history, water quality and thermal behavior of Trojan Tailings Pond ?Techniques used in fertilization; introduction of micro-flora (algae etc.), large aquatic plants, zooplankton and invertebrates ??Selection and sources of suitable transplant materials ??Rate and extent of vegetation establishment ??Biomass production ??Rates of organic sediment accumulation over tailings ??Bacterial activity in the sediments ??Improved water quality through the bioaccumulation of aqueous metals in plants and the subsequent bacterial binding or precipitation of that metal during decomposition in the tailings sediment. In 1991, he joined Highland Valley Copper working as an Environmental Engineer responsible for government liaison, reclamation, decommissioning and other environmental duties. Heather M. Larratt graduated from the University of Calgary in 1978 with a B.Sc. in Environmental Biology (First Class Honors). She has provided drinking water management and reservoir design for numerous cities and irrigation districts in British Columbia for 20 years. Heather has also worked for 12 years in reclamation of mine water, including passive SRB water treatment systems. Mark R. Freberg joined Highland Valley Copper in 1991 after working at number of mining operations in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. "In flotation, depressants are used to reduce the amount of gangue that reports to the concentrate and hence increase the selectivity of the flotation process. At the University of Cape Town extensive batch flotation tests are carried out to evaluate industrial depressants and standard procedures have been developed over the years.This study was conducted in order to develop an improved method for comparing depressants using machine vision as an aid. The modified method of batch flotation involved a test with prolonged intervals between scraping to allow more time for the froth to build up and mature.This method of testing showed increased differences between the flotation performance obtained as represented by grade recovery curves for carboxymethyl cellulose and guar depressants when compared to the standard method of testing with shorter scraping intervals. The improvement was attributed to reduced entrainment resulting from longer drainage time in the froth and therefore yielded a better test for comparing depressants on the basis of true gangue flotation with minimized entrainment. As expected, the sulphide recoveries were unaffected by the change in method. The machine vision system also added to the information obtained during these tests by recording bubble size trends throughout the tests which were later analyzed and related to the amount of flotable gangue in the froth. Modifications are recommended to improve the usefulness of machine vision in batch flotation."

The development of slurries of coal and water as a boiler fuel replacing No. 6 fuel oil has been actively pursued at the Atlantic Research Corporation since 1976. Funding for this effort has been provided by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute, and by corporate funds. The name ARC-COALTM has been selected for these slurries. Stable coal-water slurries with bone-dry coal loadings between 62% and 77% have been prepared, evaluated rheologically, and successfully burned in an experimental furnace without the assistance of other fuels. The advantages and properties of these slurries, including combustion results, are reviewed. Also discussed is the pilot line used for processing barrel quantities of fuel and a pilot plant capable of processing 600 bbl/day, currently being designed.

Bulletin of Development Branch, Canadian Pacific Railway. The history of gold mining in Canada is comparatively modern and does not take one further back than the late 'fifties of the 19th century. If the efforts of the early explorers in Canada were expended in "seeking with equal ardour, proselytes and gold", history fails of any record of their success in the search for the precious metal. As early as 1849 not a few Canadians travelled from the east by land and water to the Californian goldfields. In the then settled part of Canadathe east-people were alive to the value of any mineral discovery; but the west, owing to its remoteness and to there being no ready means of communication, was virtually isolated from the east.

Mineral sands represent an important new resource being developed in the Murray Basin, including parts of western Victoria. This paper will outline a simple methodology for mineral sands characterisation, developed as part of the AMIRA-managed project P777 æThe Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of ClericiÆs Solution)Æ. This project is currently sponsored by three multinational mining companies (De Beers Consolidated Mines, Iluka Resources Limited and Rio Tinto Limited) and is developing an innovative laboratory mineral characterisation procedure that will allow the replacement of the currently employed highly-toxic chemicals.Mineral sand resources almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively heavy) mineral. Titanium minerals are found with a large range of titanium contents, giving rise to density variation and often subjective mineralogical descriptions. Companies tend to rely on laboratory heavy liquid separation in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (æheavyÆ) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilised at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. However, beyond this value currently only organic liquids can be used. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0, hence æClericiÆs solutionÆ. For the characterisation of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (eg anatase sg 3.9, rutile sg 4.2, ilmenite sg 4.4 û 4.7 and zircon sg 4.6 û 4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to ClericiÆs solution. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by very few laboratories worldwide with costs reflecting the chemical costs (though extensive efforts are made to recover and reuse the liquid, plus the requirement of its removal from the mineral samples), the infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (eg blood testing of exposed staff, inventory management). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation is being developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, that can replace ClericiÆs solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (eg -250+150 microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 5.0 will be outlined and the comparison of results with ClericiÆs solution presented.

A custom-designed shotcrete system, consisting of an 8-m3 (10-yd3) transit mixer and a shotcrete spray boom carrier, is used bya 2-man crew to transport and place up to 25 m3 (32 yd3) of steel-fiber reinforced, dry, silica fume shotcrete per II-hour shift. Shotcrete is custom blended by a local supplier and delivered predampened. Mix design and quality control is performed with a computer program that develops and graphs a properly balanced mix based upon the materials sieve analyses.

Sample preparation for gold samples, where the distribution and size of gold particles is often irregular, usually demands that a relatively large sample weight is taken to produce a representative sample for analysis. Traditional sample preparation of gold samples incorporated multiple stages of coarse particle size reduction followed by subdivision of the sample prior to final fine pulverising. This technique developed because of the limited equipment options available to laboratories. As a result significant errors are introduced and the final sample size being pulverised is a small fraction of the original sample weight. Three significant developments have occurred in the last 25 years to significantly improve sample preparation of gold samples: 1.  large capacity fine pulverising,2.  fine jaw crushing, and3.  whole sample coarse pulverising. In the mid-1980s an Australian manufacturer developed large capacity pulverising bowls which had the ability to reduce samples with a mass of 1.5 - 3.5 kg to a nominal 0.075 mm product in approximately three to five minutes. Laboratories were able to produce a large homogeneous pulverised sample which significantly reduced the error in sampling. However, exploration and mine samples are usually 7 to 10 kg and the sample requires a subdivision stage following crushing to produce the 3.5 kg for the pulverising step, thus introducing potential for significant error. The development of fine jaw crushing allowed particle size reduction to -2 mm which reduced the subdivision error of the bulk sample prior to fine pulverising. Subdivision of the crushed sample at -2 mm still results in potential sampling errors, where the gold particles are not sufficiently liberated to be representatively sampled. Clearly the best option would be to reduce the particle size small enough to ensure a representative sample prior to final pulverising. Continuous mills offer a partial solution but are relatively slow and subject the sample to differential pulverising prior to subdivision. Clearly this does not provide the best solution for routine laboratory applications where high volumes of samples are to be processed. The recent development of a large capacity coarse pulverising system allows samples of up to 10 kg to be reduced to -0.25 mm prior to subdivision, and fine pulverised to -0.075 mm. Laboratories now have the necessary equipment to perform reliable large capacity sample preparation of gold samples. The exact choice of a sample preparation scheme may still depend on particular ore types but the need for multiple crushing and subdivision stages is redundant.

Mining activity is increasing in northern boreal and subarctic regions of Canada. This is the case in the far north of Ontario, especially in and near the Hudson Bay Lowland (HBL). De Beers Canada opened the Victor diamond mine in the centre of the HBL in 2008, and advanced exploration and impact assessments are occurring to the west in the ?Ring of Fire? for ferrochrome, nickel/copper, iron/ vanadium and platinum-group elements, making it one of the richest mineral finds in Canada in recent years. However, the HBL is also a near-pristine, sensitive environment. Its peatlands forms the third largest wetland in the world and are globally important stores of terrestrial carbon. Human populations in the region are sparse, consisting almost entirely of First Nations communities. Local First Nations also have a strong land ethic and greatly influence mining developments. Through formal agreements, they have insisted on a gold standard for environmental management, including a small mine footprint and the return to representative native ecosystems after mine closure. However, knowledge on the revegetation of subarctic and northern boreal ecosystems is limited. Here, we are conducting research at the Victor mine to develop gold standard protocols for the revegetation of disturbed peatlands and mine waste uplands and present a summary of results. We first tested existing protocols for peatland restoration from southeastern Canada. We collected peat-forming plants from nearby muskeg, spread them sparsely over disturbed peatlands and applied a light phosphate fertilizer, but unlike southern protocols, no mulch appeared to be required to produce a representative cover of peat-forming plants within three years. A bigger challenge is the reclamation of uplands made of mine waste back to representative ecosystems. We first characterized reference conditions for uplands in the HBL, which are scarce in the region. Nearby natural uplands were divided into two classes, interior uplands and uplands along river valleys. Multiple parameters were examined at these sites including soil development, bulk density, soil chemistry in the rooting horizons, plant cover by stratum, plant species composition and dead wood. The mean condition and, more importantly, the range of these parameters allow us to set broad targets for progressive reclamation, which will facilitate success. Finally, we characterized local upland plant species through their functional traits to determine their likely abilities to colonize, grow and contribute to ecosystem processes. A classification of species by these simple functional attributes will help restoration managers to select candidate species to meet different goals at different successional stages (i.e. good versus poor dispersers or establishers). Research into these protocols remain in the early stages, but show promise that gold standards can be achieved to ensure that mining wastes can be reclaimed to productive ecosystems.

Introdduction The main line of ascent in the development of the nickel industry may be traced back through the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, to its earliest antecedents, the Canadian Copper Company and the Orford Copper Company. Mining geology is but one aspect of the overall development of this organization, and the stress it has placed on geology grew according to the need. In the early days, intensive geology was not required because ore supply was not one of the main problems of this or any of the pioneer companies. The difficulty then was to find economic methods for reducing the ores to nickel and copper, and markets for absorbing nickel in the face of a limited demand from consumers heavily prejudiced in favour of the New Caledonia product. "Very early in the history of the region it was patent to everyone that to share in the full benefits of the industry the same individuals or company must control the whole of the operation necessary to manufacture the finished product' (1, p. 45). These conditions were fulfilled for the International Nickel Company in 1902 when the Canadian Copper Company (incorporated 1886), with its ample ore supply, took the initiative to merge its interests with those of the Orford Copper (Refining) Company (incorporated 1887) to form the new company which, with reorganizational changes, emerged as the producer of the overwhelming bulk of the world's nickel. The Mond Nickel Company, Limited, entered the field in 1899 with a refining process, and over a period of years acquired ore through purchase of mining properties. This Company operated successfully and independently until 1929 when its assets were joined with those of the International Nickel Company in order to permit the most economic exploitation of the Frood-Stobie orebody in which both Companies were interested.
