New underground coal mines have become increasingly expensive to open. A simple drift mine producing a raw coal product can cost as much as $50 million while a new shaft mine producing a washed coal product can cost up to $200 million. As a result, few if any speculative new mines are constructed. Normally, a long term coal supply agreement is needed to justify new mine projects. Negotiating a supply agreement prior to production start is difficult. Pricing must be based on estimated rather than historic costs and coal quality must be estimated from core hole samples versus actual shipments. Further in todays competitive coal markets, there is little margin for error in either price or quality.

Gravitational field anomalies have been observed over many igneous intrusives of medium (4000 km2) to small (100 km2) size in outcrop area. These studies give good results because the residual anomalies can be separated from larger scale crustal anomalies and density contrasts usually are present. Although unique solutions are not possible, the analysis of the gravity anomalies can put limits upon the geologic interpretation of such bodies. Three examples in Montana, U. S. A. are discussed: (1) the Boulder Batholith, a late Cretaceous quartz monzonite series of intrusives of 4000 km2 outcrop area; (2) the Little Rocky Mountains, an up-domed area, in which an Eocene porphyry (130 km2) has intruded the Precambrian crystallines and lower Cambrian sediments; and (3) the Crazy Mountains, an Eocene diorite (100 km2), which has intruded the Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments. In both the Boulder Batholith and the Little Rocky Mountains, intrusive rocks are less dense than the surrounding rocks and negative anomalies are found (40 and 28 mgal, resp.). In the Crazy Mountains, the intrusive is more dense than the surrounding sediments and a sharp positive residual anomaly of 42 mgal is observed. The analyses of the gravity anomalies predict that: (1) the thickness of the Boulder Batholith is on the order of 10 to 15 kms and is concave upward; (2) the Little Rocky Mountain syenite is not a simple laccolith, but is T-shaped and extends in depth to about 16 kms; (3) the Crazy Mountain diorite is not a simple small scale series of stocks, but a large connected body extending in depth 5 kms to the basement (although nothing can be said of it within the basement because there is little density contrast). The analyses of the anomalies place important limits on both the areal and depth extent of the intrusive bodies. Of all possible geophysical techniques, gravity studies offer the most promise in the determination of the shape in depth of intrusive bodies.

"Clays are present in a large number of mineral deposits and are commonly found as gangue. Its complex chemical structure, characterised by anisotropic surfaces, makes its presence a permanent challenge for flotation operations, increasing the reagent consumption, decreasing the quality of the concentrate, and changing the rheological properties of the system. In this context, the main objective of this research is to improve the floatability of chalcopyrite minerals in the presence of clays by using guar gum, a low molecular weight organic polymer, which acts as a surface coating agent for clays. Clay Minerals Society provided the kaolinite sample and the chalcopyrite sample was purified from mineralized rock specimens obtained from Ward’s Natural Science Establishment. Micro flotation tests were carried out in a 150 cm3 Partridge-Smith cell, using compressed air as the gas phase at a flow rate of 80 cm3/min. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were used as a collector and a frother, respectively. The results showed that the use of guar gum improves the recovery of chalcopyrite in the presence of kaolinite because it induces the formation of clay aggregates that settle by gravitational effects, preventing the 'coating effect' and decreasing excessive collector consumption. pH played a key role in the guar gum performance, which was most effective at highly alkaline conditions (pH 11), where the copper recovery improved from 73% to 90%. The work has significant implications for the mineral flotation in the presence of clay minerals.INTRODUCTION The mining industry is continuously confronted with challenges that alert the sustainability of the sector. There is little availability of water, the grade of the deposits are getting smaller, and the gangue is becoming more complex. Usually, clays are part of the gangue in numerous systems, including copper ore, porphyry, nickel, platinum, etc. (Senior & Thomas, 2005). The structure is mainly composed of layers of tetrahedral silica (T) and octahedral alumina (O) that join in certain proportions: 1: 1 (T-O) and 2: 1 (T-O-T) (Theng, 2012). Also, they expose two crystallographically different surfaces: the faces, which tend to be negatively charged, and the edges, which carry a charge that changes from positive to negative depending on the pH (Van Olphen, 1977). One of the most common clays in copper deposits is kaolinite, whose structure is composed of an octahedral sheet of gibbsite bound to a tetrahedral silica sheet in the ratio 1:1"

The use of high-efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) for large scale, open pit mine dewatering operations provides a good example of how technology, products and services from the oil and gas industry can be adapted to the mining industry. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito in the Zacatecas state of Mexico, at the Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit deposits. The technology, products and services are from Schlumberger artificial lift (AL) and Schlumberger industrial water services (IWS). Overview of high-efficiency ESPs This section provides a brief description of the basic components, specifications and operating capacity ranges for the ESPs compared with traditional or conventional dewatering well pumps. This information helps to establish how ESPs provide certain functional and economic advantages over conventional pumps in a mine dewatering application. A schematic of a high-efficiency ESP in an oil and gas (O&G) application is shown in Fig. 1.

To obtain a detailed image of the metallurgical process under observance, it is necessary to place the optical objective of the camera close to the process. The Spyrometer™ (which is Quadtek's tradename for its imaging pyrometer) objective is housed in a lens tube that is cooled and permits insertion inside the vessel of interest. The length of the lens tube is chosen on the basis of making sure that the tip of the tube is just beyond the refractories lining the inside of the furnace. In most pyrometallurgical processes, we have found that the most reliable system set-up uses a water cooled shroud to cool the lens tube optics. A sapphire window provides maximum protection from the environment. Even in the case of the water cooled version, there is an air purge for the lens that keeps the objective clean and protects against hot metal splashes."

"An existing landslide located at the southeast corner of the Telluride Regional Airport has been in an active state of failure for several years. The presence of the landslide has represented an on-going liability for the Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Colorado Department of Transportation. A catastrophic failure of this landslide occurring in a manner similar to that which occurred at the Airport in 1987 has posed an on-going threat to closing Colorado State Highway 145 south and below the slide area. The existing landslide has been characterized as a series of multiple failed block areas located downhill of the airport runway that have occurred in severely weathered Mancos Shale.A total of 12 alternatives were evaluated to mitigate the landslide, including the preferred alternatives of either partial or total landslide removal. However, prior development has left essentially no place on the airport property that would allow for the disposal of the landslide debris for either the total or partial removal alternatives, and the closest off-site disposal area was approximately 40 miles from the site. As a result, in-situ stabilization of the landslide, including a primary system of isolated tie-back anchor plates with strand anchors, and a secondary system of high strength steel mesh and intermediate anchors was selected for the ultimate design of the project to stabilize the landslide in place.For design purposes, geotechnical characterization of the slide area was accomplished through geological mapping, conventional borehole exploration and geophysics using multiple electrical resistivity. The paper discusses the design process utilized and the unique challenges faced one-third of the way through construction when discovery of a survey error required redesign of the entire landslide mass stabilization system using the prefabricated anchors that had already been delivered to the project.INTRODUCTIONTelluride Colorado is located at the toe of the Colorado Rocky Mountains on the western slope. The Telluride Regional Airport is located on Deep Creek Mesa about 5 miles west of the town of Telluride.The landslide is located at the southeast corner of the airport just below an abandoned portion of the quarry access road on a south facing slope. The quarry access road is located below the elevation of the runway and outside the elk fence that surrounds the air traffic area of the airport property. Since the reconstruction of the runway, the access road to the quarry and the construction access road for the reconstruction of the airport runway and safety area were rerouted to stable ground north of the previous access road location and off of the head scarp of the landslide."

LATE in 1942, the increasing demand for zinc, coupled with the growing shortage of miners and the knowledge that some abandoned mines would have to be reopened for prospecting and development, led to considerable thought as to the possibilities of further mechanization in order to conserve man power. The ore bodies, locally termed "sheet ground," are an important ore bed in some mines and are in the lower part of Boone formation of the Mississippian Series. Some mines contain interbedded layers of nearly pure galena and sphalerite in horizontal sheets ranging in thickness from a thin seam to several inches and is persistent over large areas. This type of ore body offered the best opportunity for study and experiments. The use of jumbo drill carriers was advanced but some doubt was expressed as to the adaptability of jumbos as then in use to mine headings as compared to post and arm mounting (Fig I). Another consideration was the introduction of truck haulage when several mines were trackless. A drill frame, built to carry 2 4-in. drifters, was mounted on a truck chassis. This design proved a failure as it was not rigid and the resiliency of the tires and springs allowed too much play. Long screw jacks were then used to hold the truck firmly in place, but placing the jacks and securing the truck required more effort and time than setting up post drills, so the truck carrier was abandoned. The use of a bull dozer underground had been under consideration for some time to be used in "brunoing" the broken dirt from behind pillars and other inaccessable places so the slusher drags could load without double dragging the dirt. A dozer with hydraulic blade lift was purchased and R. I. Tuthill, Superintendent of Section 30 Mines, suggested that a long drill arm be substituted for the blade, and the drills mounted on the cross member. The hydraulic lift would permit drilling holes at any required spacing. The "cat" was very mobile and answered the problem of a trackless mine. The initial tests showed that the "cat" would make a good carrier, but the hydraulic controls Were not positive enough to keep the drills in alignment while drilling. The next step was to build a small hoist. This hoist was attached to the power take-off on the "cat" and by means of sheaves and a double line of 3/8-in. hoist cable, a positive control for raising and lowering the boom was obtained. To avoid serious injuries to the drillers should the cable break, a safety chain was fastened to the drill boom and hooked into a slot in the back of the "cat" frame. A different power unit was obtained for the "cat," as a state law prohibited the use of internal combustion engines in mines. A custom machine shop had just placed on the market a small hoist powered by a Model A Ford engine that had been very ingeniously converted to a slide valve engine using compressed air. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a holistic environmental assessment tool that allows the compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs, and potential environmental impacts of a product or service throughout its life cycle, from cradle to grave (i.e., from resource extraction and transformation to final disposal, including production and use stages). The relevance of LCA for the mining industry is twofold. First, the mining industry has a role in providing the LCA community the data that allows subsequent evaluations of the life cycle environmental impacts of primary materials such as metals, as well as the environmental comparison of the downstream products of the mining industry with other competing materials for specific uses. Second, the mining industry can use LCA in order to evaluate the environmental impacts of its activities, identify their environmental hotspots and compare the impacts of available technical options. For example, the environmental impacts of different extractive and processing technology can be compared through the use of LCA. This latter use of LCA by the mining industry is less common. This paper discusses the use of LCA to compare sulphidic tailings management options. The paper also presents some of the LCA research challenges that still have to be addressed to increase the relevance of LCA results for the specific context of mining activities.

"Molybdenum is currently the most important by-product of Chile´s copper mining industry. This mineral has gained international relevance over the years, because of its price. At mining deposits in Chile, copper and molybdenum are extracted together and then separated in a concentration process consisting of several flotation steps using sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) as copper depressant. However, there are environmental issues related to the potential emisions of toxic hydrosulfide gas and bad odours, which affects nearby communities and suppose a risk for operators. This problem has led to the need for development of new technologies to eliminate the use of NaHS in the process of selective flotation of Cu and Mo minerals. In this work, results of flotation tests in which lignin derivatives reagents are used to obtain the selective separation of Cu and Mo minerals by flotation are presented. In this technology molybdenite is depressed by the action of lignin derivatives (lignosulfonates), while copper sulfides remain hydrophobic and float. The use of lignin derivatives in the selective flotation of copper molybdenum minerals represents a non-toxic alternative to NaHS.INTRODUCTIONSeparation of copper sulfides from molybdenite is commonly achieved through a two-stage flotation process. In the first stage the collective flotation of copper sulfides and molybdenite is promoted to generate a collective concentrate which is then treated in a second stage with sodium hydrosulfide (2.5-3.0 kg/t NaSH) to depress copper sulfides flotation without affecting the flotation of molybdenite. As a result a copper concentrate with 30-35% Cu, and a molybdenum concentrate with 50-52% Mo are generated. Although this process is widely used at industrial level, environmental issues related to the risk of H2S generation and bad odors have always been a concern. Thus there is a need in the industry for a more environmentally friendly process to separate copper sulfides and molybdenite."

Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.Recent increases in prices for iron ore, together with the potential to produce high iron and low contaminant concentrates, have resulted in a renewed interest in recovering magnetite from banded iron formation and other deposits.Geometallurgical evaluation of magnetite involves approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation that are different from the methods commonly used for haematite iron ore. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.The sampling protocol will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a bench-scale test that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents, or may be estimated directly. For estimation of the concentrate grades, a weighting can be applied to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries from each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.This paper presents an overview of the use of metallurgical test data in resource evaluation for magnetite deposits.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner, being considered for installation at Sunshine Mining & Refining Co.’s Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause and effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feedgrade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate, and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences were useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training, and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

Gold mining is a major contributor to the South African economy, but is associated with several environmental issues such as acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is due to the oxidation of sulfides in gold tailings and is characterised by low pH, high sulfate content and elevated concentrations of heavy metals that contaminates scarce water resources and subsequently limits the use of such waters without treatment. Treatment strategies can only be implemented if the acid-generating potential of mine wastes is effectively predicted using common static and kinetic acid prediction tests. The choice of test performed is usually a trade-off between the number of samples, speed of the test, cost of the analysis and level of information obtained. Often the results of these various tests are not consistent with one another. This study uses mineralogy to analyse biokinetic test results of a Witwatersrand gold sample in order to improve the understanding of behaviour of mine wastes under different ARD prediction test conditions.All ARD prediction testing methods investigated in this study showed that the gold sample is considered to be potentially acid forming with net acid generation (NAG) pH of 2.5 and net acid producing potential (NAPP) of 36 kg H2SO4/t. Results of biokinetic test showed that ANC was consumed within four days confirming acid producing potential of the sample with low neutralising potential as observed from acid base accounting (ABA) (4.7 kg H2SO4/t) and mineralogy (4.9 kg H2SO4/t). Results generated in this study demonstrated importance of mineralogy in both understanding the controlling reaction mechanisms playing key role in ARD formation and its capability as a prediction technique. Future work will focus on the application of mineralogy in interpreting the behaviour of mine waste under different static test conditions with a view to assessing their applicability and reliability in estimating potential acid generating characteristics of gold tailings.CITATION:Dyantyi, N, Becker, M, Broadhurst, J L, Harrison, S T L and Franzidis, J-P, 2013. Future haulage cost projections led Foster Yeoman Limited into developing a fully mobile crushing and conveying system at its Torr Works quarry in Somerset, England. The purpose-built system has an effective throughput of 2,500 tonnes/hour and features an Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) manufactured walking frame, a Fuller-Traylor type 54 X 74 TC gyratory crusher, and unique mobile conveyor modules designed and manufactured by Foster Yeoman. Used in a single-bench operation in this 6 million-tonne per annum limestone aggregate quarry, the system is fed at the production face by 2 Caterpillar 992C loading shovels. The entire system is moved on a daily basis following production face locations.

THE general conception of a mine model is that of a three-dimensional object representing the mine workings, the orebody and the country rock of a particular property. Its chief uses have been to make it easier to understand the mine and to serve as a basis for the arguing of legal questions. Fayol endeavored to use mine models in a different way and to all students of subsidence "Fayol's dome theory" is of decided interest. We have more recently the suggestion of Young and Stoek of the University of Illinois, who1 suggest the use of models as a means of studying the problem. Prof. Henry Briggs, of the University of Edinburgh and Herriott Watt College, also makes use of models to determine the effects of bending at the edges of extensive workings.2 It is interesting to note that civil engineers are taking a decided interest in the application of models and the principles of dynamic similarity to the solution of their problems. The Proceedings of the American Society of Civil Engineers for 1930 contain an elaborate article by Benjamin F. Groat,3 who says, in his opening remarks: "Every engineer should know and understand that a model constructed in accordance with Newton's theory of similarity is not only the means for reproducing the complexities of flow, or other mechanical action, on a small scale, but that models may be made the best means of designing works of great magnitude. In the present state of knowledge, a properly constructed and properly tested model will answer the difficult questions of hydrodynamics much more quickly and accurately than the most profound mathematical analyses." A study of P. W. Bridgman's book on Dimensional Analyses leads one to arrive at the same conclusion.

Based on a statistical analysis of the categorical and numerical data from the established geological model, a geochemical classification of mineralization has been shown to be objective in nature and correlated to the envisioned metal extraction process. Multivariate chemical classification has the potential to discriminate within a combined response from different types of alteration and metal abundances. Distinct domains of chemical response determined by clustering analysis were used as a validating criterion for a geologically driven metallurgical testing program. The groups established are spatially linked to the geological process responsible for their genesis, providing clarity in geometallurgical and resource modeling.

IN 1833, less than one hundred years ago, Michael Faraday discovered and stated the laws of electrolysis. His discovery formed the foundation of a new use of metals which has now reached a variety of application not ordinarily appreciated. Furthermore, things can be done with electro-deposited coatings which have thus far defied other methods. Some of the uses of electro-deposited coatings are interesting. The tonnage of metals already finding an outlet through such a channel is considerable. In general electro-deposits have two characteristics: ornament plus utility; utility plus ornament. Both these factors are usually found associated in electro- deposits. Ornament plus utility was probably the first use. For example, the silver-plating of tableware, having its real birth in Birmingham, England, about 1844. However, this same ornament plus utility retarded the development of electro-plating, because in the beginning, electro-plated articles were branded with the odium of imitation and shunned accordingly. The gold brick of the swindler may be an exception to this statement.

Reagents form a crucial part of flotation process as they have the power to control the surface properties of minerals. In case of coal flotation, collectors and frothers are two the important and commonly used reagents. But other types of reagents such as promoters, modifiers and depressants are also finding wide applications because of their availability to improve selectivity and increase recovery. Because of these chemicals the scenario has changed from flotation being used mostly for high rank hydrophobic coals to low rank, oxidised or inferior coals. In the present work a case is presented in which two non-ionic surfactants (abbreviated as A & B) known to act as emulsifier have been studied to get a better flotation performance for a preparation plant with varying feed characteristics. Laboratory flotation tests were conducted with both the surfactants using three feed samples of the plant by varying the dosage at three different levels. The highest combustible matter recovery (more than 80%) was obtained for surfactant B at a dosage of 75 ppm (parts per million) for feed 1. But at the same dosage the recovery decreased by 21% and 10.2 % respectively for feed 2 and 3. On the other hand surfactant A showed a consistent result for all the three feed samples giving the highest value at a dosage of 50 ppm followed by a decrease beyond this point. The tests were complemented by contact angle measurements that demonstrated the same trend. In addition to this the reproducibility of data for Surfactant A was checked and found that the standard deviations for both separation efficiency and combustible matter recovery were within the permissible range (less than 5%). Linear estimation methods are widely used for resource evaluation. Among the existing linear estimation methods, ordinary Kriging (OK) was accepted as the best estimator to determine the average ore grade of each block. However, OK is inadequate for modeling small blocks in relation to data spacing, resulting in over-smoothed models. In this study, the results of the recoverable resource from the short-term model are compared to estimated models generated by the traditional method, i.e., OK, and non-linear methods. The conclusion is that non-linear methods improve the accuracy and precision of the long-term model when compared to the model generated by OK.
