Micro-computers have made it practical to install a high-speed acquisition system to collect data from a longwall face in near real-time. By simultaneous data analyses using neural networks and fuzzy sets, information regarding longwall mining performance and underground behavior can be provided and forecasting longwall instability and detecting geological anomalies is feasible. This paper presents details of the application of neural networks and fuzzy sets in developing on-line evaluation of longwall roof behavior. Techniques for interpreting longwall shield pressures and characterizing roof conditions are discussed.

The magnetite orebody at Pea Ridge strikes NE-SH and dips at about 800 to the SE. The ore is high grade magnetite with a strike length of over 600-m and a maximum width of over 180-m on some of the levels. The shape and the mineral content of the iron orebody have been fairly consistent so far. The iron ore and surrounding basement rocks are Precambrian in age. These rocks are usually very competent, about 400-m of sediments lie over the ore.

Variable reactance arc control by the SPLC (Smart Predictive Line Controller) has been installed at many different mining sites and steel processing plants around the world. Since its first installation 18 years ago, many advances have been made to both the technology, and to its integration with furnace processes and plant operations. The SPLC has helped to improve electric arc furnace stability by reducing electrode movement while maintaining flat line arc power. Stable furnace operation at higher average power increases productivity. This paper summarizes the progression of electro-technology at Hatch since the 1970s, including fixed and variable reactance, digital electrode regulation, and fast variable speed hydraulics for Soderberg electrode, as demonstrated and benchmarked through projects and lessons learned over the years.

Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. (SMMC) is currently developing the flowsheet to treat stockpiled limonite, a type of laterite ore, at Rio Tuba on southern Palawan Island, Philippines. The new plant will be commissioned at the end of 2004. Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTNMC) has been mining saprolite since 1977, and the limonite ore located above the saprolite ore body has been stockpiled separately according to nickel and magnesium content. Ore from these stockpiles will be blended and used for the operation. The annual production of nickel will be 10,000 metric tons for the next twenty years. The proposed process consists of ore preparation, high pressure acid leach (HPAL), counter- current decantation wash, impurity removal and sulfide precipitation. Precipitated mixed sulfide will be processed to electrolytic nickel by the Matte Chlorine Leach Electrowinning (MCLE) process at Niihama, Japan. SMMC has established new technologies during the process development, such as zinc removal and sulfide precipitation. Applying this technology, preferential removal of zinc can be achieved by hydrogen sulfide gas with negligible loss of nickel. Precipitation of nickel by hydrogen sulfide gas is carried out at low temperature. Slow kinetics is selected for control of the particle size of the precipitated mixed sulfide. The total utilization of raw materials and energy is the most important criterion when planning. industrial processes. The main goal is clearly to use the raw materials and energy as effectively as possible in order to make the desired products directly in the primary process itself', or to recycle unused materials and energy either as such, or after cleaning back into the process. However, few industrial processes are so straightforward. Most processes generate by-streams of materials and energy, which cannot be recycled directly and it is namely these by-streams which tend to remain as wastes. These by-streams are slags, dusts, vaporized metals, liquids, slurries, sludges, gases etc. Most base metal processes produce all these by-products. Waste water and gas emission controls and regulations are tightening all the time, so new processes must be developed to keep pace with these requirements. These processes generate more solid wastes, which must be utilized or at least processed into a harmless form landfilling. Municipal and hazardous wastes also contain valuable materials and energy, which must be used to minimize landfilling. The development of processes for these purposes places even greater demands on research and development. The same principles and methods developed for mining, ore dressing and metal refining processes can also be adapted for research and development work on processes for waste minimization. However, the problems encountered are much more complicated and less familiar, demanding more versatile and accurate tools and equipment. This paper presents principles, examples and some references of R & D work on processes for waste minimization.

"Gowest Gold Ltd. is in the process of developing the Frankfield East gold deposit located along the largely undeveloped Pipestone fault northeast of Timmins, Ontario. In addition to resource development and environmental permitting work the company has had an ongoing program of metallurgical and engineering studies aimed at evaluating options for processing the Frankfield East ore. Mineralization at the Frankfield project contains arsenopyrite and pyrite as the major sulphide minerals. Bulk flotation of all sulphides results in extremely high gold recovery. However, the gold is almost entirely associated with the arsenopyrite fraction of the ore and is refractory in nature requiring preoxidation treatment. Selective flotation was investigated to recover a gold-arsenopyrite concentrate thereby reducing the mass which would be subjected to further gold processing. As part of this work, a pyrite concentrate low in arsenic content was also recovered that would be suitable as a source of sulphur for a smelter (or other pyrometallurgical facility). Production of separate arsenopyrite and pyrite concentrates is frequently examined but rarely adopted due to the distribution of gold between the two products or the inability to achieve adequate separation. Several flowsheet options were investigated in the study. The best results were achieved following a sequential flotation flowsheet. The flowsheet configuration was key to meeting the targets for the two products. In this paper, the various options investigated are reviewed and the results of the final flowsheet are presented. The overall plan by Gowest was to evaluate all process options to bring the Frankfield East deposit into production. The ability to effectively separate the arsenopyrite and pyrite components in the ore provides Gowest with added opportunities to pursue both short and long term production scenarios."

DISCOVERY of large iron ore deposits in New Quebec and Labrador is, undoubtedly, one of the outstanding mining events of the twentieth century. To give an idea of size, the present concession is almost equivalent to a strip a mile wide around the earth at the equator. Importance of this iron ore area can best be appreciated by comparison to the famous Mesabi Range. On Mesabi, the area of favorable rock is 110 miles long and from 1 to 5 miles wide, with a, productive zone about 70 miles long. On the con- cessions the area of favorable rock in the Labrador Trough is 225 miles long and from 10 to 60 miles wide. In Quebec-Labrador, exploration already discloses that the productive zone is 90 miles long, with good chances of being extended at both ends. The Mesabi is covered generally by thick over- burden, and the iron ore deposits were found by T- test-pitting and systematic test-drilling. In Labrador and Quebec, most ore has been developed from a few surface deposits, and when it is considered that at least 95 pct of the area is covered by over- burden, and that there remains thousands of square miles of favorable territory still to be explored, it can be seen that the possibilities for developing additional ore are tremendous.

Generally, waste such as soil and sandstone is used in mines for road construction or haul roads. In many such mines, it is challenging to design haul road pavement to match the dumper capacity. This paper investigates overburden soil to find its utility as a pavement material. It is found that overburden soil is unsuitable pavement material without stabilization; hence, nine composite materials are developed using overburden soil and RBI. Physical, mechanical and microstructural properties of unstabilized and stabilized soil are determined. Statistical analysis is carried out to assess the effect of soil type, RBI and curing period of strength characteristics of unstabilized and stabilized soil. ANOVA tests assess the influence of RBI percentage on soil geotechnical properties, and regression relations are developed. Two-way ANOVA shows the effect of RBI and soil type on soil geotechnical properties, whereas one-way ANOVA shows that the influence of soil type is more than the RBI. The regression relation is developed for CBR, UCS, Poisson’s ratio and modulus of elasticity with a good correlation coefficient. The performance of RBI is more with the finer material and reduces with an increase in the size of soil grains. The performance of the developed composite is better than the earlier developed composite based on overburden with fly ash, lime kiln dust, lime or clinker.

Dwindling near-surface mineral reserves emphasize the need for the development of exploration techniques capable of greater depth penetration; geochemical techniques tradition- ally have been restricted to the search for deposits having at least a sub-outcrop expression. Rock geochemical techniques developed in Cyprus in 1967-1968 recognized anomalous conditions in volcanic rocks up to one mile from an ore de- posit. Research by the Exploration Geochemistry Group at the University of New Brunswick has shown that some massive sulphide deposits in New Brunswick have well-defined halos of major, minor, and trace elements in the host rocks extending up to 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) laterally along the same stratigraphic horizon, and up to 450 metres (1,500 feet) vertically in hanging wall rocks which apparently post-date mineralization; well-defined halos have also been found in foot- wall rocks. Some of these halos are readily identified as individual elements or as element pairs; others are so subtle as to be recognizable only through computer-calculated multivariate analysis. Research continues to extend the dimension of rock geochemical halos for regional exploration and for identification of more restrictive anomalous conditions which may closely define the location and extent of buried sulphide deposits.

The use of wire ropes has already been tried in a few countries for roof support In mines. But the use of scrap wire ropes, as a method of support on extensive scale has not been reported from anywhere except India. Extensive trials using freshly discarded wire ropes for roof support were undertaken both in the laboratory and field. In laboratory, model beams supported with different reinforcing techniques were tested to evaluate their comparative load bearing capacity vis-a-vis reinforcing factor. Among all the tests, the model supported with wire rope system at 60° angle in combination with two supplementary vertical bolts offered the best result 1.e. about 95% reinforcement. It also accepted post fracture loading of the beam. In statical analysis too, the best result could be obtained with the rope installed across the gallery at 60° angle. All these findings are in conformity with the field observations obtained during roof stitching practices in coal mines. Of late, roof stitching, an effective and economical method of roof support developed at CMRS, India in 1972, found wide application in over 200 coal mines. In this method, a freshly discarded wire rope is grouted across a gallery in two inclined drill holes supplemented with two middle vertical roof bolts at every 1.0 to 1.2 m interval along the gallery. It is tensioned against the roof using wooden sleepers and thus, the whole system functions like a roof truss.

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. In response, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of various underground coal mining equipment, an example of which is a roof bolting machine (RBM). After the removal of coal or rock, the remaining strata may be subject to fall, either from overhead (the roof) or from the side (the rib). One method used in underground coal-mines to prevent failures requires the installation of roof bolts. The roof bolting machine operator trams the machine to the required location, drills a hole into the strata, and then installs a roof bolt, supporting the roof or the rib, as the case may be. Field studies support the premise that, on average, drilling noise is the loudest noise that a roof bolting machine operator would be exposed to and contributes significantly to the operators? noise exposure. NIOSH has determined that the drill steel radiates a significant amount of noise during drilling. NIOSH is developing bit and chuck isolators to reduce vibration, and thus noise radiation of the drill steel, with the longer-term goal of reducing roof bolting machine operator noise exposure. Laboratory testing has shown that operator ear sound pressure levels may be reduced by 3 to 7 dB(A), depending upon the test configuration and drilling media.

In a large-scale open-pit mining operation, continuous efforts are made to control damage to the slope walls. An essential tool in this effort is determining the PPVc (critical peak particle velocity) in areas of interest. By knowing this value and generating criteria, drilling and blasting designs can be established to reduce vibrations that affect wall construction. It is crucial to understand that the PPVc changes as different mining phases develop, especially due to exploitation on the benches, which leads to vertical inherited damage. Therefore, it is imperative to regularly update the PPVc based on field tests that provide accurate data. With this information, vibration damage criteria can be established, and drilling and blasting techniques can be designed to minimize the impact on the remaining rock mass. This document presents a methodology for generating scaled criteria that best represent the reality of the rock mass.

Residues from titanium smelting tend to contain scandium. The scandiumis discarded because no suitable process exists for its recovery from the residue. Valuable-metal recovery from discharged residue is critical for environmental conservation and to achieve a sustainable society. Since 2015, JXNippon Mining&Metals has been developing a process for scandium recovery from the residue of a titaniumsmelting process. The process consists of the following steps: scandium concentrating by classification or neutralization, selective scandium leaching, impurity removal by neutralization, solvent extraction of scandium by using D2EHPA, purification, and roasting. We optimized the above steps to achieve an effective process to obtain scandium oxide (Sc2O3). In this paper, we introduce results from the bench-scale test of the scandium recovery flowsheet developed by JX Nippon Mining & Metals.

The reduction roast-ammonium carbonate leach-hydrogen reduction process for laterites has been under development by Sherritt Gordon for the past 20 years. The process can treat high iron or low iron laterites, with some process modification, and gives extractions of 88-93% Ni or 82-88% Ni, respectively. Five campaigns on a 1 tonne per day Pilot Plant and four campaigns on a 35 t/d Demonstration Plant have been carried out on laterite from three different deposits, and many other laterites have been investigated in the laboratory. The Marinduque Surigao Nickel Refinery in the Philippines was designed on the basis of this work. The process comprises roasting to selectively reduce the nickel and cobalt in the laterite, leaching the calcine in ammonium carbonate to dissolve the metals, recovery of cobalt by precipitation of a mixed metal sulphide, concentration of nickel from the carbonate solution by basic nickel carbonate precipitation and recovery of high purity nickel by hydrogen reduction of nickel from ammonium sulphate solution. Ion exchange has been developed as an alternative to BNC and for recovery of trace nickel from BNC barren liquor. Details of the development of some of the process steps through the laboratory to commercial plant are discussed. The process metallurgy has been confirmed in the commercial plant.

In 1903, seventeen years after mining of the Witwatersrand gold-bearing reefs started, the findings erf the Miners' Phthisis Commission (Transvaal) resulted in the initiation of measures with the object of controlling dust production. The substance of these measures was as follows: Removal of persons from places where they would be exposed to blasting fumes; use of water to suppress dust made in drilling and in other operations; supply and control of air to working-places; filtration of dusty air; and determination of the amount of the dust in the air. Broadly speaking, progress in dust control has followed these four lines with increasing success as the nature of the problem has become better known. Complete success has not, however, been achieved, partly because increasing mechanization of mining has intensified the problem and partly because the application of these measures is not infallible, being subject, in many cases, to human control. A brief summary of the development of these measures will lead to a description of present-day practice.

IN order to provide a clear picture of the development of the sink-and-float process of concentration as applied to the iron ores of Minnesota, a few pertinent facts should be brought out concerning the ores and the products of concentration. Iron ore is primarily a cheap commodity handled in immense quantities. The price of iron ore at present, based on a natural iron content of 51.5 per cent, varies from $2.55 to $2.70 per gross ton f.o.b. cars at the mine or washing plant in Minnesota. Last year 92,000,000 gross tons were shipped from the Lake Superior district (Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin) to the furnaces. Concentrated iron ores have no greater value per unit of iron content than ores that can be mined and shipped direct from the shafts or open pits. For years only the higher grades of concentrating ores could be treated and sold in competition with the immense reserves of direct shipping ore available. These higher-grade "straight wash" ores required only the simplest treatment; namely, the washing out of fine sand from coarse ore particles. As the exhaustion of the "straight wash" ore is reached, rock is found replacing part of this sand, and the ore no longer responds to the former sizing treatment. Substantial tonnages of this marginal (jig ore) remained to be treated. Because of the limitations placed on concentrates by the furnaces-namely, low price of product and minimum amount of fines-iron-ore concentration has been and must continue to be a one-pass process. Only an increase in price or a change in structure of concentrates allowed by the ore consumer will encourage departure from this practice. Faced with the necessity of handling large tonnages, with the limitations mentioned, iron-ore research men have found their search for new and more efficient methods of treatment seriously handicapped and removed from the field of fine crushing. Sink-and-float treatment appeared to offer the best field in coarse concentration and has been proved by several plants to be well adapted to our problem. The use of ferrosilicon as a medium solid was decided upon. In our present practice, the ferrosilicon metal, carrying about 83 per cent iron, 15 per cent silicon and 2 per cent carbon and nonmagnetics, is crushed to pass 65 mesh and used without further sizing. When mixed with water the specific gravity of the medium may be controlled to within 0.02 per cent above or below the required gravity. Pipe umbrella support systems – also called canopy tube systems – have been used successfully for tunnelling in challenging ground conditions since the 1970s. Historically, the drilling unit was the limiting factor for pipe umbrella installations – less attention has been paid to pipe couplings and their influence on labour time and load-bearing capacity.This contribution investigates the influence of the type of pipe connection on the load bearing characteristics of a connected pipe and discusses associated influences on design calculations and installation performance. Standard thread connections reduce the effective cross-section and thereby load-bearing capacity in the connection area. To achieve design parameters, over-dimensioning of the un-weakened pipe section is the only way to overcome this limitation. Recently, two new, alternative connection types were designed and developed for connected pipe umbrella pipes. The first one is the nipple coupling, consisting of fitting with a threaded connection that is pressed and welded into the ends of standard tubes. The second type is the squeezed connection, which mechanically connects non-threaded pipe ends, achieved by force-fitted squeezing from the drill rig. Both coupling types have technical as well as operational advantages compared to the common thread couplings, which are the weakest point in the support system.In the following sections significant technical differences are explained, design values given and a site example presented to illustrate the operational advantages of the newly developed coupling?type.CITATION:Volkmann, G M, 2014. Since 2016 Gerdau Ouro Branco has been producing steel plates of various qualities and grades. However, it was not until 2018 that the first plates produced by accelerated cooling process were made available for external testing, in this case for large diameter UOE pipes manufacturing. Recent line pipe and OCTG specifications are showing that the oil and gas market still consumes regular API grades, such as X60, X65 and X70, however with increasing wall thicknesses, reaching values up to 1.5 inches. These specifications also demand longitudinal and transverse tensile guarantees and drop weight tear tests in temperatures as low as -40°C. Projects with these types of mechanical properties present process requirements as challenging as those necessary for higher API grades in lower thicknesses. This paper shows the steel design concepts and rolling routes for achieving the necessary properties for X70 steel plates in 28.15 mm. The microstructural features were also investigated and associated with the production process and the tensile and toughness results. Finally, challenges such as tensile anisotropy and DWTT abnormal fracture are presented.

Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National institute for Occupational Safety and health are evaluating stress and displacement measurements in a longwall coal mine. The objective is to determine the best indicators of coal bump hazards during operations so that mine foremen and technical stall can make more informed intervention decisions to protect miners from coal bumps. Instruments were clustered in two panels, a yield pillar, and the immediate roof and floor of a two-entry longwall coal mine. Data were gathered continuously from a variety of instruments as mining proceeded toward and past the instrument cluster. Researchers and the mine's technical staff evaluated these data with respect to coal bumps and bump mechanisms. Selected graphs were then presented to mine foremen on a periodic basis to test their usefulness in identifying hazards. Of particular interest was the use of horizontal stress data from the immediate roof. To measure changes in horizontal stress, a new technique was devel¬oped for installing a grouted biaxial stressmeter in the roof. An evaluation of the development of this stress monitoring system in producing data beneficial to mine foremen is presented.

In April, 1975 the Colorado School of Mines began monitoring rock mass response associated with a long- wall shield demonstration project near Raton, New Mexico. This project was sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Mines (DOE) and performed at Kaiser Steel Corporation's York Canyon Mine. Two of the results of the intensive instrumentation effort are the empirical subsidence and horizontal strain models presented herein. These models are based on data gathered during mining three adjacent longwall panels (4N, 5N and 6N). A total of 251 permanent surveying monuments were monitored over the three-panel area. Lines of monuments were oriented along panel centerlines, perpendicular to centerlines and diagonal (45O) to centerlines. Active monuments were monitored twice a week, with less frequent monitoring of stable or slow moving monuments. Primary subsidence monitoring equipment consisted of an AGA Geometer Model 75 and a Wild T-2 Theodolite with -a Wild-Sercel DI-3S distomat.
