The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride, and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element-bearing phosphates and fluorocarbonates has been examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study has found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of rare earth elements (REEs) from various sources in the aqueous media. The thermodynamic calculations in this study have indicated that the speciation of REEs with the anions tends to increase the overall solubility of the REE-bearing minerals. However, in some cases, strong precipitation of REEs with some of these anions causes an adverse effect on the solubility of these elements. It has been found that sulfate ion has the most pronounced effect on the solubility compared to nitrate and chloride, in which the latter two acids exhibited almost identical results. The calculated results have indicated that REE-oxide (hydrated) is the easiest compound to dissolve, followed by carbonate, phosphate, fluoride, sulfate, fluoro-carbonate, and oxalate in that order.

IN previous publications1 it was shown that a scalar model of any weighty structure, where the stresses produced are mainly due to gravita-tional forces, will behave similarly to its prototype if the model and proto-type material are the same arid the model is placed in a centrifugal field of force (substituted for the gravitational field) which has been increased in the same proportion as the linear model scale is decreased. This principle is now being applied to a study of the behavior of mine structures in an attempt to determine the laws that control them. The importance of using models as a means of solving mining problems has been discussed previously, yet it may be well to reiterate here that this method of research and type of solution have been productive of far-reaching results in other engineering fields, notably those of hydraulics and aerodynamics. Model research is a comparatively cheap and time-saving method of checking practical experience. Up to the present time the best guide to what will happen underground has been the judgment of the man who has observed most and been longest acquainted with the local conditions. His experimental work underground is limited by the elements of cost, time and danger, while failure is seldom permissible. In a model, as in a test tube, all elements that affect the solution of a problem are under definite control. Each element may be varied independently at will and its effects noted. Experimental work on a small-scale model may there¬fore be performed at a comparatively small expenditure of time and money, instead of on a full scale in the mine, where the cost, time, and danger elements are necessarily great. The experiments described in this paper are to be considered as part of a progress report and a continuation of Technical Paper 425. One object of the research program is to make each experiment point the way for further research on that particular phase of the general problem. The behaviour of arsenic and antimony during copper electrorefining was studied in order to identify the conditions under which good quality copper cathodes could be produced from anodes with high levels of these impurities. Examination of the effect of current density over the range 21 to 37 mA/cm2 indicated that the relative amounts of As and Sb entering the electrolyte affected the onset of passivation. When the ratio of As/Sb entering the electrolyte was greater than 2, the anodes showed no sign of passivation even at the highest current density; when the ratio was less than 2, the anodes passivated at 37 mA/cm2. Cathode analyses showed that anodes with an As/Sb dissolution ratio less than 2.0 tend to produce cathodes of inferior quality even at normal current densities (25.7 mA/cm2). The criterion of a minimum As/Sb dissolution ratio of 2.0, and mathematical correlations for the distribution of As and Sb between the electrolyte and slime developed in a previous study, allow the calculation of the maximum allowable Sb level in en anode for a given As concentration. Analyses of plant data at the CCR Division of Noranda Inc. for the last four years of operation have demonstrated that the use of this as a quality control tool has allowed the quality of copper cathodes to be maintained despite a significant increase in the average Sb levels in anode receipts.

The selection of atmosphere composition is critical for controlling surface quality of reactive aluminum alloys during solution treatments. An improper selection of annealing atmosphere can result in surface blistering in AI-Mg and sub-surface depletion of lithium in AI-U ingots. To determine optimum atmosphere compositions for homogenizing A1-Mg and Al-Li alloys, Ii number of exploratory experiments were carried out in air, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide based atmospheres including reactive impurities or additive such as moisture and sulfur hexafluoride. This paper describes the influence of these atmospheres on high-temperature oxidation and sub-surface defects. The results are discussed in terms of the change in Pilling-Bedworth ratio.

Magnesium is listed as a key critical raw material in a report by the European Commission that evaluated raw materials based on supply risk versus economic importance [1]. It has extraordinary properties, such as nontoxicity, inertness, high melting point, stability, low weight, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, optical transparency, corrosion-resistant behavior and refractory nature. It is widely used in the areas of agriculture; the environment, for antibacterial and water-purification purposes; electronics; automotive; drug delivery; ceramics; construction, as filler in brick; and concrete production, in the forms of magnesium oxychloride and magnesium oxysulfate. Magnesium oxide (MgO) particles can be produced through the calcination of magnesite ore at different calcination conditions depending on the desired quality of the product, classified as fused (2,800 °C), dead-burned (>1,400 °C), hard-burned (1,000–1,400 °C), or light-burned MgO (700–1,000 °C) [2]. However, the global availability of magnesite ore is limited.

"The aim of this paper is to analyze the creep behavior of a Portuguese soft soil stabilized with binders in one-dimensional conditions, based on oedometer creep tests. The study focuses on the analysis of the effect of the binder content and binder type on the creep behavior of a stabilized soil. The results show that the best binder type for this soil, in terms of creep behavior, is composed of Portland cement and fly ash with a dry weight proportion of 75/25, as this promotes the development of secondary pozzolanic reactions. The results also show the decrease in the secondary compression index with the increment of the binder content, since it promotes an increase in the cementation bonds between soil particles. The general analysis of the results shows a clear dependence on C??and qu, until values of qu of 1500 kPa; after that this relationship is negligible.INTRODUCTIONThe geotechnical structures (such as embankments, dams and buildings) built on organic soils exhibit notable creep deformations, which increase the maintenance and exploitation costs and can even compromise their functioning. To attenuate the creep effects of the soft ground, some improvement techniques are frequently used, such as preloading or reinforcing the soil foundations with vertical rigid inclusions, like concrete piles, stone columns or deep mixing columns (DMCs). However, the installation of DMCs in the soft ground induces (via the arching effect) a transfer of stresses from the soft soil to the DMCs, which causes an increase in the creep settlement on the DMCs (Venda Oliveira et al. 2011).Notwithstanding the fact that the creep behavior of clays has been the object of several studies (Leroueil et al. 1985; Mesri and Castro 1987; among others), the study of the creep behavior of soil-binder admixtures has been practically ignored by the scientific community. The few studies on this theme have revealed that a stabilized soil’s creep behavior is dependent on: the type of binder (Venda Oliveira et al. 2013), the binder content (Correia 2011; Bobet et al. 2011; and Venda Oliveira et al. 2013), the stress level applied during the creep phase (Venda Oliveira et al. 2013), the organic matter content of the natural soil (Venda Oliveira et al. 2012; 2014), and the curing conditions (humidity, vertical stress applied during curing, and curing time) (Correia 2011; Venda Oliveira et al. 2012).The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the creep behavior of a soil-binder admixture, by examining the results of oedometer creep tests. The study focuses on the analysis of the effect of the binder content and binder type on the creep behavior of a stabilized soil. Additionally, the creep behavior is correlated with the effective vertical yield stress and the unconfined compressive strength (UCS)."

The Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has partnered with a narrow vein, hard rock underground mine to research the effects of the binder content on the elasticity and post-peak ductility of cemented hydraulic backfill (CHB). This is part of a larger study to enhance the long-term integrity of ground support in underground mines. As mining advances deeper and stresses increase, CHB mix designs will benefit if they can be modified to handle higher levels of strain which are induced by an increased stope closure, typically affected by a reduction in stope width and increased mining depth, or through dynamic loading resulting from a local seismic event. This portion of the research examined the impact of reductions in binder and their impact on Young’s modulus, peak strength, and post-peak ductility.

"The copper mining industry in Chile and perhaps in other countries as well is faced with the challenge to implement the best practices in order to achieve a sustainable and more environment-friendly growth. Relationships between mining industry and society have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. Whereas the ore grade has declined continuously, this has involved an intensive energy and water consumption thus increasing operational costs at different stages of the concentration process. In the case of copper sulphide ore concentration, froth flotation is the main technology used worldwide. The amount of the different chemical reagents used in flotation plants (i.e., collectors, depressants, frothers and modifiers) affects significantly production costs and has a negative effect on the environment as well. The objective of this research work was to evaluate the use of biosolids and their main components (i.e., glucose, proteins and humic substances) as more environment-friendly flotation collectors for chalcopyrite and molybdenite. For this purpose, microflotation tests were conducted in a modified Hallimond tube. In addition, FTIR and zeta potential experiments were performed to investigate the interaction of biosolids with these sulphide minerals. Biosolids and their main components may interact through physical and chemical ways due to different affinities with such sulphide minerals as chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite, which are present in copper sulphide ores. In alkaline pHs, biosolids and their main components make the zeta potential of the sulphide minerals investigated more negative. These results may provide important information concerning the behavior of the main sulphide minerals in the concentration of copper sulphide ores at industrial scale, wherein mill processes could affect their surfaces properties. Therefore, biosolids and their main components may open an opportunity to be used in copper sulphide flotation plants to partially replace conventional reagents, which are more hazardous and less environment-friendly."

This paper examines the effect of bucket geometry (cutting blade profile, floor profile, and blade thickness), speed, motor power output, and muckpile particle sizes on bucket penetration and draft for rubber tire loaders. The work uses a 1:16 scaled model of a load-haul-dump in full factorial experiments to examine the effect of the variables on penetration and maximum draft. The results show that speed and motor output are positively correlated to penetration and draft; muckpile particle size is positively correlated to penetration and negatively correlated to draft (p < 0.0014). The results show that buckets with a semi-spade cutting nose profile yield the highest penetration (mean 118.30 mm) followed by those with the spade (mean 108.88 mm), which also yield higher penetration than those straight blades (mean 95.19 mm). Bucket floor profile and blade thickness had no significant effect on penetration or draft. Also, we determined that increasing the speed and motor power output, simultaneously, can reduce bucket penetration. Thus, operators should not waste energy for no additional gain or even loss in bucket penetration. Also, the work finds speed and motor power output each combine with muckpile particle sizes to affect bucket penetration. This research furthers our understanding of the effectiveness of different bucket geometries in improving penetration and reducing draft for rubber tire loaders.

Charcoal produced from Syzygium Zeylanicum trees was widely used in ancient Sri Lankan iron smelting practices. Charcoal made from Syzygium Zeylanicum tree trunks, branches and leaves were analysed by optical mineralogy and SEM and found to contain unusually high concentrations of calcium oxalate (CaC2O4.H2O – CaOx) crystals in plant cells. Partial and full reduction tests of a high-P Brockman ore were conducted at several temperatures with coke and coke doped with CaOx and CaCO3. It was observed that CaOx promoted reduction and generated comparatively more metallic iron in reduced samples. Furthermore, CaOx encouraged phosphorous partition into slag phases than into the metallic iron, suggesting CaOx can a potential alternative fluxing material to calcium carbonate for treating high-P iron ores in ironmaking processes.

"The rotary vacuum drum filter (RVDF) is widely used for dewatering in mining industrial. In general, different parameters have influence in the solid-liquid separation such as: solid percent, level of vacuum, particle size distribution, filter cloth and chemical additives. These parameters can influence on some variables such as cake moisture, throughput and filter cloth life time. The aim of this study is to propose some chemical additives to improve the rate of filtration and decrease cake moisture of Gol-E Gohar iron ore concentrate by using laboratory scale bottom feed vacuum filter and suggest a filter cloth with long life time (more than 400 hours). Effect of particle size distribution on filtration investigated in large scale by measuring the thickness of cake and cake moisture.Increasing molecular weight of anionic flocculant lead to increases throughput but cake moisture increases too; While the filter aid increases throughput and decreases cake moisture simultaneously; the combination of them show different behavior. TSS and filter cloth life time have directly relation with material and type of filter cloth weave. Depending to type of feed, two polyester and polypropylene filter cloth are suggested. More over twill and satin weave have the best results. To prove the laboratory results some industrial tests performed in Gol-E Gohar hematite iron ore concentrate plant.INTRODUCTION“The process of grinding and classification involves the use of large quantities of water. The separation of solids from liquids is usually achieved by gravity sedimentation in thickeners. For fine particles this is a slow process. In general, 75–80% of the water can be separated and removed by thickeners. For further water removal, filters are used where in excess of 90% of the water can be removed” (Gupta, 2006).“Many types of filters are available, which are broadly classified here as vacuum, pressure, precoat and depth filters. Each classification contains a number of sub-processes. A category of filter that uses vacuum induced driving forces and semipermeable media to facilitate the separation of solids from suspension. While pressure differences across the filter are limited to less than 85 KPa (usually 75 KPa), most units are capable of processing a wide range of feed materials in a continuous manner” (Rushton, 2008)."

Water for domestic consumption is an essential right of society, which must be over secured. Water reclamation and reuse provides a unique and viable opportunity to augment traditional water supplies. As a multi-discipline and important element of water resource development and management, water reuse can help to close the loop between water supply and wastewater disposal. Effective water reuse requires integration of water and reclaimed water supply functions. During the coal mining activities, large quantities of water get contaminated and loses its potability characteristics. On an average, in coal mine operation, each coal mine discharges effluents at a rate of nearly 0.5 MGD and thereby wastage of nearly 50 MGD of water takes place per day from the famous Jharia Coal Field of the Dhanbad District. In this paper, attempt has been made to control the extremely high turbidity of mine waste water by using different coagulants and it is observed that ferrous sulphate is the most effective coagulants followed by alum, ferric sulphate and lime. Also combinations of coagulants are used for getting the optimal results. Further steps were also discussed to make this water potable and a scheme of low cost water supply system of mine waste water has been suggested under the Water Management Strategies. Os aços maraging tem grande importância tecnológica devido sua aplicação nas industrias aeroespacial e nuclear. Uma das aplicações para esse material é a fabricação de cilindros de alta resistência pelo processo de estampagem profunda, logo o conhecimento da textura cristalográfica torna-se fundamental. Este trabalho investigou o efeito da laminação à frio seguida por um recozimento sobre a microestrutura, textura e anisotropia plástica no aço maraging 350. A anisotropia foi medida pelo cálculo dos coeficientes de Lankford e dos coeficientes de anisotropia normal (Rm) e planar (?R). Os resultados mostraram o aumento na deformação a frio gera um aumento na intensidade da fibra acompanhada de um aumento no valor de Rm. As análises metalográficas mostram que maiores reduções induzem à um precipitação intermetálica após o recozimento.

"Nucleation and growth of copper on 316L stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate was studied in the absence and presence of chloride ions and/or organic additives (HydroStar® 4208, DXG®-F7, Cyquest® N-900) using a potentiostatic technique. The current-time data obtained at 0.16V vs. SHE was analyzed using nucleation and growth models. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of deposits produced at 300 A m-2 show that the addition of 20 mg/L chloride ions increased the size and reduced the number of copper nuclei. Potentiostatic current-time data from the electrolyte without organic additives indicate progressive nucleation with two-dimensional (2-D) growth under diffusion control. SEM images obtained confirmed progressive nucleation with 2-D growth. 20 mg/L Cl- and 2.5 mg/L organic additives did not change the nucleation and growth mechanism, however the additives increased the number and reduced the size of copper nuclei leading to more uniform coverage of the stainless steel substrate.INTRODUCTION Electrowinning of copper is an important process in the manufacture of high purity copper metal. It is approximated that 20% of the world’s refined copper is produced from acidified copper sulfate solutions by electrowinning (Schlesinger, Sole, and Davenport, 2011). In many plants, copper is electrodeposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrates for a period of 6-7 days, after which the copper is stripped from the blanks. Even though the deposition time for a commercial copper electrowinning circuit is around one week, it is critically important to control the nucleation, growth, and nature of the initial deposit (Sun and O&apos;Keefe, 1992). Deposit morphology and structure are influenced by the real current density at the electrode surface. The real current density across the cathode surface is made uniform by proper design of the electrowinning cell and electrodes and careful operational practice. Even with good design and control, some current maldistribution occurs. The outcome of severe current maldistribution is poor deposits that affect product quality and/or increase energy consumption. To combat current maldistribution and create a larger operating window in terms of current density, temperature, and copper concentration, small amounts of organic smoothing agents (traditionally guar products) are added to copper electrowinning electrolytes. Moreover, these additives inhibit the growth of copper dendrites, which leads to improved deposit quality by producing bright, smooth, and dense cathodes."

"In this work, the phase transformational behaviors and microstructural characteristics of 60Si2CrVAT spring steel were systematically investigated as a function of applied cooling rates in the range of 0.l-10°C/s. A quenching deformation dilatometer was used to austenize and quench. The dilatometric curves between length changes and temperature of samples suggest three characteristic stages could be identified as different ranges of cooling rates, which meets well with metallographic examination and the measured hardness results. As the cooling rate increases, the structure transformed from pearlite, granular bainite to finally martensite. The F + P and B zones are completely overlapping in continuous cooling transformation (CCI) curve, which indicates that this steel is difficult to become single bainite and shows good hardenability.IntroductionThe 60Si2CrVAT, a high-carbon low ally super-high strength steel developed from the ?OCT 60C2XFA and 60Si2MnA, is often used for coil spring of heavy vehicles and high-speed railway by hot deformation or cold deformation [1-3]. The addition of Si improves relaxation resistance significantly, through the refinement of tempered carbides as the result of the retardation of E -carbide conversion to cementite during tempering. Due to its deleterious effects on decarburization and toughness, the maxinJum content of Si has limited to 1.5 or 2.0% [4-5]. Additionally, V and Cr can improve sag resistance due to the precipitation of fine carbonitrides during hot rolling [6-7]. To best of our knowledge, the strengthening by precipitation of alloy carbides of Cr and V often referred to secondary hardening [8]."

Today there is a consensus that xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals is primarily controlled by redox reactions occurring at specific potentials on these semi-conductive minerals. Consequently, it is possible to control xanthate adsorption by controlling electrochemical conditions in the system by using oxidizing and reducing agents. The scope of this study was to investigate the possibilities to increase the selectivity of Cu-Fe-Zn ore flotation by applying electrochemical control in the conditioning of the flotation feed. In this work, mild steel grinding in a nitrogen atmosphere was used as the basis to provide a negative starting potential and minimize the amount of oxidation products on sulfide mineral surfaces. To study how different potential levels affect flotation results, a controlled conditioning procedure was utilized maintaining potential at a desired level by titrating the pulp with air. Xanthate adsorption kinetics during conditioning was examined by taking pulp samples for spectrophotometric analysis and laboratory flotation tests were conducted for samples that underwent the controlled conditioning procedure in the potential range of -200mV to +200mV vs. SHE. A clear correlation was detected between chalcopyrite recovery and the potential during controlled conditioning indicating that there was a constant increase in chalcopyrite recovery when the potential was shifted to more anodic values. It is possible that utilizing potential control in the conditioning stage, a smelter grade copper concentrate can be achieved directly in rougher flotation without cleaning stages. Conditioning in favorable conditions had significant positive effects on flotation selectivity of chalcopyrite. The improvement in copper concentrate grade being predominantly caused by the depression of pyrite. By applying the controlled conditioning procedure pyrite recovery in rougher flotation was reduced even low as under 1%, while in the tests without controlled conditioning, pyrite recovery varied between 7.5 – 65.7%. The result of this work indicate that affecting collector adsorption by electrochemical control in the conditioning stage can provide significant improvement in sulfide mineral flotation and industrial applications could lead to decreased chemical consumption, reduced equipment and maintenance costs.

THE presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent, of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. PART I.-COPPER IN CYANIDATION The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent., of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust. Solubility of Copper Minerals in Cyanide Solution In order to determine the solubility of copper minerals, including metallic copper, under the usual conditions for cyanidation, experiments were conducted with synthetic ores. Each ore sample was prepared by mixing the particular pure copper mineral with barren sea sand. Both the mineral and sand were ground to pass 100 mesh before they were thoroughly mixed. The percentage of copper in each head sample was determined by direct assay, excepting the metallic copper sample, which was computed on weights before mixing. Table 1 gives the results.

As the orebodies become more complex and lower grade, there is an increasing demand from crushing circuits for a finer product. When the product from a crushing circuit does not satisfy the requirements of the downstream processes, the cost of production increases. Thus, enhancing the performance of cone crushers through optimisation of their operating factors becomes important. One of the key factors affecting performance of cone crushers is the filling of the crushing chamber during the operation. The effect of varying the filling of the crushing chamber of a cone crusher was investigated. To assess the crusher performance, parameters such as crusher capacity, power utilisation, and reduction ratio were used. Extensive plant trials were conducted to obtain samples and operational data when the crusher chamber was 50% full (half-full) and 100% full, which is 300 mm above the top of the crusher chamber (super-choked condition). The results indicated a 62% difference in the crushing capacity when the crusher was operated in a super-choked condition compared to the half-full chamber level. In the super-choked condition, the size-specific energy at 12.7 mm was 20 % lower than that of the half-full condition. The Bond ball mill work index (BBWI) of crusher product indicated that the BBWI of the product of the super choked condition is 5.6% less than that of the product of half-full condition. This can be attributed to the generation of micro cracks in particles due to increase in the interparticle breakage when the crusher was operated in the super-choked mode.
