With the increasing demand for metalliferous and mineral raw materials and the consequent depletion of the global natural resource base, the possible utilization of secondary raw material sources is receiving more and more attention. In the present study, we present results from a detailed vanadium deportment study of three basic oxygen furnace slag (BOS) samples known to containing elevated bulk concentrations of vanadium. Complementary analytical methods that were used to quantify the abundance and composition of V-containing phases include SEM-based automated mineralogy, X-ray fluorescence analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction as well as electron probe microanalysis. The vanadium deportment was quantified using Monte-Carlo simulations of the data obtained from automated mineralogy and electron microprobe analysis. The total V concentrations identified by XRF are between 1.7 and 2.2 wt.% V. The most important hosts of vanadium are larnite-, brownmillerite- and portlandite-solid solutions. In two samples Ca carbonates also significantly contribute to the V deportment, while wuestite, lime, and native iron do not contribute significantly to the vanadium deportment. A thorough consistency check identifies considerable uncertainties in the density of the V-bearing phases as the most likely reason to explain remaining discrepancies between measured and calculated V values.

Electrically Switched Ion Exchange (ESIX) is an approach for ion separation that combines Ion exchange (IX) and electrochemistry by utilizing electro active IX films to provide a selective, reversible, and economical separation method that greatly reduces secondary waste generation compared with conventional ion exchange. Studies on the development of films with improved stability and capacity and their use in continuous flow systems for ion separations will be. reported. Both technical and economic evaluations demonstrate ,the viability of once-through or batch recycle waste processing with ESIX.

Ventilation of underground workings consists in establishment of such control of air currents that the underground workers may work in safety, with maximum comfort and efficiency, and without impairment of health; and requires that the mine openings may be made subject to such control of air flow as to remove from these workings at ordinary times harmful gases and dusts, and that, at time of emergency, such as fire or explosion, there may be maintained as much or as little air flow as may be desired covering portions of the mine or the mine in its entirety. Control of air flow is the keystone of any ventilating structure, and this very essential feature is obtainable only by the installation of mechanically-operated fans, together with other;. ventilating devices such as doors, over-casts, regulators, etc. Every mine, large or small, coal or metal, should from the outset be equipped with a fan. While much has been written about natural ventilation and many claims made that in specific mines there is sufficient natural air flow, there are few if any mines, coal or metal, where natural ventilation supplies anything like adequately safe or healthful conditions for underground workers even at ordinary times; and at a time of mine fire or explosion, mines depending upon natural ventilation are practically helpless, and certainly are decidedly dangerous to those unfortunates forced to be in them. While ventilation has practically always been deemed an integral part of coal mining, metal mines have rarely paid much, if any, attention to air circulation until forced to do so by occurrence of some untoward condition or accident. Yet metal mines actually have as great need of efficient circulation of air as have coal mines. The coal mine must remove the dangerous explosive gas, methane, also fumes from explosives and, in occasional places, other gases such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen.

A. E. ROSS*—Mr. Armstrong in his paper stated that they had experienced considerable difficulty in drilling the quartz-feldspar intergrowths. The dia-mor~d loss was excessive and the diamond bits polished quite rapidly. Mr. Davidson, who presented the paper, stated that bortx stones in the range of 20 to 30 per carat had been used in the bits on this job. I would like to suggest the use of bits employing stones in the range of 60 to 100 per carat, an average of possibly 80 per carat. If these stones had been used the bits might have lasted longer and not polished so quickly. As a basis for this suggestion I would like to point out that in northern New York State we had at least two examples where bits employing stones in the range of 80 per carat had solved a difficult problem. Bits set with stones in the range of 20 to 30 per carat had been used previously and had failed. With the finer stones, the cost per foot of drilling decreased material1y. It should also be noted from a technical standpoint that the smaller stones require higher drilling speeds than the larger stones. Greater pressures are not normally necessary, and it is the higher speed which seems to be the major factor of importance. It should also be noted that the finer stones afford a greater number or cutting surfaces for the same carat weight in a bit. Then too, the smaller stones, by virtue of their size, serve as sharper cutting edges than larger stones. There is no doubt that the diamond bit employing smaller stones costs more to set than the bit using larger stones. However, with the technique developed at the shops of Sprague and Henwood, Inc., we feel that the relatively slight additional cost required to set these bits is more than paid for by the resultant lower drilling cost. We feel that the highest quality stone available is the most economical to use when hard fine grained rock is encountered. In summary, I would suggest that it might be possible to solve the problem presented in this paper by using a diamond bit employing stones at least as small as 80 per carat of the highest grade possible and by using the diamond bit at the highest speed available with modern drilling equipment. ARMSTRONG (author's reply) —It is generally agreed that the use of smaller, high-grade diamonds and of higher drilling speeds, as suggested by Mr. Ross, may be the best approach to the solution of the problem.

Three companies, United States Potash Company, Potash Company of America, and International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, are now operating potash mines and reGneries in the Carlsbad, New Mexico, area. The three mines are located approximately twenty miles east of Car1sbad. The deposits have been found ideal for mechanized mining methods. This summary has been compiled from information made available by the three operating companies. Prospecting Since outcrops of potash are nonexistent, prospecting is accomplished by drilling and coring of the salt section to establish the grade, thickness, and outline of the potash beds contained in the salt deposits. Information regarding the nature of the formations in the cover of 400 to 600 ft thick over the salt and potash beds is also obtained from drill cuttings in the same operation. By proper interpretation of assembled data the best location for shafts may be determined. The overburden varies in character but consists in general of interbedded shales, sand, gravels, limestones, and anhydrite beds. Water, in unpleasant quantities, especially in the sands and limestones, often completes the geologic section. Some of the shaftas in the area have been sunk without undue difficulties, others have been delayed by flows of water. Most of the shafts are concreted from the surface to the salt section. Each of the three mines in the Carlsbad area has one shaft for hoisting ore and one for hoisting men and supplies. Mining Methods Information acquired from initial drilling and prospecting affected the choice of mining methods. Since the tabular, slightly rolling deposits were similar to coal seams, the room-and-pillar system used in coal mining was adopted by all the companies. Pillars have not been removed in any of the mines on a large scale. One company has conducted experimental robbing of pillars in one restricted area. Where it is known that overlying strata contain water in large amounts, it is not considered practical to risk flooding of the mines by removing pillars without fill. Some thought is now being directed toward development of economical methods of filling for pillar recovery. The problem is not identical at the three mines and local conditions will govern the methods employed for eventual pillar recovery. The important point is that, with large reserves, it has not been necessary to resort to mining of pillars for adequate production. The ore deposits are laterally extensive but are irregular in shape and lie at a depth of 700 to 1100 ft below the surface. The major operations of all mines are on the same bed strati-graphically, except for the langbeinite level at International Minerals and Chemical Corporation. The deposits are apparently not connected and in many parts of the deposits being mined, "salt horses" or barren zones occur. From 400 to 700 ft of salt with minor beds of polyhalite and anhydrite lie immediately above the ore horizon. The ore differs from the salt only in the potassium chloride content and color due to small amounts of iron associated with the sylvite, giving the ore a somewhat mottled red and white cast. Thickness of the ore varies from 5 to 14 ft. Rooms and break-throughs in the mines vary from 24 to 40 ft in width, the overlying salt forming an excellent roof and providing safe mining conditions. Almost no timber is used in any of the mines for roof support. Drilling is normally the first step in mining the face of a room. Electric motor driven auger drills are used in the area. Jack hammers were used to some extent when the mines were first opened but the ore is easily drilled if bits are sharp and the coal type

ORE control is a matter of planning and supervision based on a foreknowledge of the content and distribution of ore. The Inspiration orebody is predominately a copper-sulphide blanket, overlain by an oxidized zone of copper silicates, copper carbonates, and barren capping. Most of the ore is treated by leaching, and the optimum requirement of this method is the goal toward which the mining schedule is aimed. Both open-pit operations and underground mining are used. The problems of ore control at Inspiration are: I—maintenance of metallurgical balance, 2—conservation of oxide ore, and 3—mining out of the orebody at an average grade which parallels that of the reserve figure. Prior to the fall of 1926 all of the Inspiration division ores were treated by flotation, but the mixed ores of the Live Oak—Keystone section carried too large a proportion of copper in the form of chrysocolla for satisfactory flotation. For this type of mixed ore the leaching process now in use had been worked out, and the plant was put into operation in the fall of 1926. The process is known as the ferric sulphate leach, and the leaching solvents contain both ferric sulphate and free sulphuric acid. Sulphide copper in the form of chalcocite is leached by the ferric sulphate, and the oxidized copper minerals are dissolved by the sulphuric acid. From the beginning of operations to the present time the plant has treated some 67 thousand tons of ore having an average copper content of 1.142 pct, of which 0.605 pct has been in the form of oxidized copper minerals. The plant is currently being operated at the rate of 11,500 tons per day, 7 days per week. However, this tonnage is produced in 6 days of mine operation. The average current grade is approximately 1 pct copper, of which about 50 pct is present as oxidized or acid-soluble copper. Close control of metallurgical procedures is a vital factor in operation of the plant and is in turn dependent upon careful regulation of feed. An excess of sulphide copper requires the presence of more ferric sulphate in the leaching solvents. On the other hand, an excess of ferric sulphate in the presence of a low sulphide feed seriously reduces the efficiency of electrolytic precipitation in tank house operations. This condition must be avoided at all costs. An additional factor must be considered. It is known that the sulphide content is predominant in the ore which remains in the reserve. To maintain the necessary sulphide-oxide proportion, so that the entire reserve will mine out at both a grade and a sulphide-oxide ratio that will be permissible throughout the remaining life of the property, it is obvious that the oxide reserve must be currently preserved to as great an extent as possible. Fortunately much of the oxide reserve is found in the open-pit operation. This happy circumstance adds flexibility to the procedure and makes it possible to maintain the close regulation necessary to insure best overall results, both mining and metallurgical. The two ore streams from the pit and underground operations join at the coarse-crushing plant, and proper control must be exercised before the ore reaches this point. The open pit is currently providing about 55 pct of the ore and underground operations the balance of production. Both operations are under a single superintendent so that the closely interrelated problems may be more readily controlled. The least flexible of the two producing units is the underground mine, where the mining method is block caving. Although a block of ground may be undercut and developed, characteristics of the material determine its caving action. The ore in the chutes must be drawn. CHUQUICAMATA, located in northern Chile in the Province of Antofagasta, is on the western slope of the Andes at an elevation of 9500 ft. Because of its position on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert, the climate is extremely arid with practically no precipitation, either rain or snow. All primary blasting in the open-pit mine at Chuquicamata is done by the churn drill, blasthole method. Since 1915, when the first tonnages of importance were removed from the open pit, there have been many changes in the blasting practice, but no clear-cut rules of method and procedure have been devised for application to the mine as a whole. One general fact stands out: both the ore and waste rock at Chuquicamata are difficult to break satisfactorily for the most efficient operation of power shovels. Numerous experiments have been made in an effort to improve the breakage and thereby increase the shovel efficiency. Holes of different diameter have been drilled, the length of toe and spacing of holes have been varied, and several types of explosives have been used. Early blasting was done by the tunnel method. The banks were high, generally 30 m, requiring the use of large charges of black powder, detonated by electric blasting caps. Large tonnages were broken at comparatively low cost, but the method left such a large proportion of oversize material for secondary blasting that satisfactory shovel operation was practically impossible. Railroad-type steam and electric shovels then in service proved unequal to the task of efficiently handling the large proportion of oversize material produced. The clean-up of high banks proved to be dangerous and expensive as large quantities of explosive were consumed in dressing these banks, and from time to time the shovels were damaged by rock slides. As early as 1923 the high benches were divided, and a standard height of 12 m was selected for the development of new benches. The recently acquired Bucyrus-Erie 550-B shovel, with its greater radius of operation compared to the Bucyrus-Erie 320-B formerly used for bench development, allowed the bench height to be increased to 16 m. Churn drill, blasthole shooting proved to be successful, and tunnel blasts were limited to certain locations where development existed or natural ground conditions made the method more attractive than the use of churn drill holes. Liquid oxygen explosive and black powder were used along with dynamite of various grades in blast-hole loading up to early 1937. Liquid oxygen and black powder were discontinued because they were more difficult to handle due to their sensitivity to fire or sparks in the extremely dry climate. At present ammonium nitrate dynamite is favored because of its superior handling qualities and its adaptability to the dry condition found in 90 pct of the mine. In wet holes, which are found only in the lowest bench of the pit and account for the remaining 10 pct of the ground to be broken, Nitramon in 8x24-in. cans, or ammonium nitrate dynamite packed in 8x24-in. paper cartridges, is being used. This latter explosive, which is protected by a special antiwetting agent that makes the cartridges resistant to water for about 24 hr, currently is considered the best available for the work and is preferred over Nitramon. Early churn drill hole shots detonated by electric blasting caps, one in each hole, gave trouble because of misfires caused by the improper balance of resistance in the electrical circuits. Primarily, it was of vital importance to effect an absolute balance of resistance in these circuits, the undertaking and completion of which invariably caused delays in the shooting schedule. Misfires resulting from the improper balance of electrical circuits, or from any other cause, were extremely hazardous, since holes had to be unloaded or fired by the insertion of another detonator. The advent of cordeau, later followed by primacord, corrected this particular difficulty and therefore reduced the possibility of missed holes. After much experimentation, the blasting practice evolved into single row, multihole shots, with the holes spaced 4.5 to 5 m center to center in a row 7.5 to 8 m back from the toe. Sucti shots were fired from either end by electric blasting caps attached to the main trunk lines of cordeau or primacord. The detonating speed of cordeau or primacord gave the practical effect of firing all holes instantaneously. Double row and multirow blasts, fired instantaneously with cordeau or primacord, proved to be unsatisfactory in the type of rock found at Chuquica-

UNDER present economic conditions the necessity of mechanizing the mines of our country has become a very important problem. More and more mines are looking toward increased or complete mechanization of their operations, so in the writer's opinion it is quite pertinent that some of the associated problems that accompany such a program be pointed out. The following generalization on attempting a comparatively slight change in mining methods at the Southeast Missouri properties of the St. Joseph Lead Co. is an attempt to point out to anyone faced with a mechanization program that much time and C. Any changes in mining methods, machinery, and so on, must entah coordination of all the other phases of mining as they all have to mesh as accurately as a smooth running chain of gears if satisfactory results are to be obtained. The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the problems which :have to be surmounted when any mechanization program is attempted, rather than to go into the mechanical details and actual operating data of the equipment employed. After all, machines have to be adapted to best suit the local conditions, so no general formula can be given that would apply to other properties. Although St. Josepll Lead Co. has been mechani-cally-minded for a number of years, as shown by the fact that over 110 million tons have been loaded mechanically since 1922, any further mechanization or changes always present a problem. When our ore bodies were of great height and area the breaking and loading were developed to a high degree of efficiency according to known standards. But in recent years, when our ore bodies became smaller and more scattered, the amount of tonnage we were able to break was not sufficient to supply our shovels with enough rock to keep them working to capacity. Our first step in attempting to rectify this situation was to develop a technique of moving the shovels to the broken ore in various stopes, which sometimes entailed a move each shift. A shovel is not producing when being moved, so within the last two years we have been endeavoring to devise some means of getting more rock broken in these smaller stopes and it was then that we became interested in jumbo drilling. To illustrate the fact that mechanization is a process of a chain of developments rather than a stroke of genius can best be shown by a general summary of conditions and obstacles which were encountered in our present attempt to establish template drilling of a standardized round. Our first jumbo was more or less the conventional type with two machines mounted on a crossbar. This arrangement proved to be impractical to duplicate satisfactorily the regular routine of slabbing in a more or less radial pattern as carried out by column drilling. One machine was either too close to or too far from the face and there was another disadvantage in that one drillman was frequently delayed while waiting for his partner to bottom a hole. Our next step was to eliminate the crossbar so the machines could operate independently of each other, but we still encountered the same objections mentioned above except that one drillman was free to drill three holes instead of one in a vertical plane independently of his partner. Time studies while trying to adapt the jumbo to the regular slabbing practice as accomplished by column drilling, revealed that twice as much time was spent in maneuvering the jumbo into position and aligning the holes as was consumed in drilling.

The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the problems which :have to be surmounted when any mechanization program is attempted, rather than to go into the mechanical details and actual operating data of the equipment employed. After all, machines have to be adapted to best suit the local conditions, so no general formula can be given that would apply to other properties. Although St. Josepll Lead Co. has been mechani-cally-minded for a number of years, as shown by the fact that over 110 million tons have been loaded mechanically since 1922, any further mechanization or changes always present a problem. When our ore bodies were of great height and area the breaking and loading were developed to a high degree of efficiency according to known standards. But in recent years, when our ore bodies became smaller and more scattered, the amount of tonnage we were able to break was not sufficient to supply our shovels with enough rock to keep them working to capacity. Our first step in attempting to rectify this situation was to develop a technique of moving the shovels to the broken ore in various stopes, which sometimes entailed a move each shift. A shovel is not producing when being moved, so within the last two years we have been endeavoring to devise some means of getting more rock broken in these smaller stopes and it was then that we became interested in jumbo drilling. To illustrate the fact that mechanization is a process of a chain of developments rather than a stroke of genius can best be shown by a general summary of conditions and obstacles which were encountered in our present attempt to establish template drilling of a standardized round. Our first jumbo was more or less the conventional type with two machines mounted on a crossbar. This arrangement proved to be impractical to duplicate satisfactorily the regular routine of slabbing in a more or less radial pattern as carried out by column drilling. One machine was either too close to or too far from the face and there was another disadvantage in that one drillman was frequently delayed while waiting for his partner to bottom a hole. Our next step was to eliminate the crossbar so the machines could operate independently of each other, but we still encountered the same objections mentioned above except that one drillman was free to drill three holes instead of one in a vertical plane independently of his partner. Time studies while trying to adapt the jumbo to the regular slabbing practice as accomplished by column drilling, revealed that twice as much time was spent in maneuvering the jumbo into position and aligning the holes as was consumed in drilling.

ALTHOUGH Kennecott's orebody has long been outlined, it is still necessary to define further its limits. This mine, long an advocate of churn drill methods, recently supplemented its practice by using a diamond drill. So far, the diamond drill holes have been along the main canyon floor which traverses the mine area. This zone, highly fractured, is cut by numerous friable quartz veinlets encountered within the porphyry. These veinlets, formed by filling contracted porphyry fractures with hot, siliceous, mineral-bearing solutions, are often more highly mineralized than adjacent porphyry. They pulverize on contact, yielding only slight amounts of core. For this reason neither analysis of core recovered (amounting to 37.5 pct of approximately 10,000 ft of hole drilled) nor sludge analysis considered separately would give correct assays. The following equation has been adopted: actual weight theoretical actual weight core — theoretical weight sludge Drilling is done un.der contract. Collection of core and sludge samples together with double-checked assaying is done by the company. Microscopic, specto-graphic, and X-ray examination of rock specimen saved is carried on at the University of Utah. A fund, set up by Kennecott Copper Corp. at the University, has encouraged cooperation in solution of mining research problems. The drill used is a Longyear hydraulic powered by a Waukesha 26-hp gasoline motor. A pump, Bean Royal type, is powered by a 7-hp Briggs-Stratton gasoline motor. Weight of unit is 4000 lb and is placed under tripod of 35-ft wood poles within a 25-ft sq area. The following results have been attained: Avg depth of hole drilled, ft 1215 Avg drilling depth per 8-hr shift, ft 10.11 Core Size, In. Avg depth of NC casing, ft 21 2 11/16 Avg depth of NX casing and size core, ft 178 2Ye Avg depth of BX casing and size core. ft 427 1% Avg depth of AX casing and size core, ft 585 1 5/32 Through the use of metal sludge collection boxes, 12 ft long, 18 in. wide, and varying from 12 to 24 in. in depth, sludge recovery has been maintained above 95 pct. Samples, both core and sludge, are assembled for each sample interval and averaged in 50-ft bench increments. Determinations for mineral values are made at both the mine and mill. Assay results varying in excess of 0.05 of copper assay values are rerun to determine correct assay. The organization chart for the Kennecott Utah copper mine is shown in Fig. 1. The Utah mine requires approximately four men per shovel shift to drill solid rock, properly slope banks, and trim loose material from the top of bench sections in making them safe for men and equipment working below. During recent years, while the mine has been worked day and night, powder crews have worked day shift only. Series of toe holes drilled back of advancing electric shovels comprise approximately 70 pct of all mine drilling. These holes, spaced about 21 ft apart, have a depth of 24 ft. Of the footage drilled, 25 pct is for vertical holes either 24 or 28 ft deep, spaced about 28 ft centers along the top rim of banks. This combination of toe holes, using an Ingersol-Rand DA 35 drifter mounted on a tripod and the vertical holes using an Ingersol-Rand Type X71 wagon drill is standard practice above the pit elevation. These benches are 68 ft high, with a few exceptions, while benches below the pit elevation are 50 ft high and require very little drilling other than toe holes. Five benches, varying in height from 80 to 100 ft, require a combination of toe holes plus vertical holes and bank holes or electric churn drill holes. Bank holes using the DA 35 drifter and electric churn drill using Bucyrus-Erie Model 29T, account for 5 pct of feet drilled. Until the past year, drilling of fill material on upper levels was accomplished by churn drill method. Wagon drills are now used for fills because they can be set up and drill a hole an hour. It is necessary to run an air drill 7 hr for each 8-hr shovel shift. Average drilling rates during the past year were as follows: DA 35 drifter using 2 and 3-man crews — 4.36 ft per man hr X 71 wagon drill using 2-man crews — 6.45 ft per man hr DA 35 drifter bank holes, 3-man crews — 2.53 ft per man hr Bucyrus-Erie churn drill, 2-man crews —1.9 ft per man hr Total mine avg — 4.57 ft per man hr Mine practice assigns powdermen to job locations where they perform all drilling and blasting work within the area. Almost as much labor is consumed in springing and loading holes as in drilling them. Average powder consumption is approximately as follows: Per Electric Shovel Shift, Lb To spring and chamber holes — 50 Blasting — 500 Trim banks — 50 One fifth of all powder used is Hercules hercomite bag powder while four fifths is Hercules gelamite 65 pct strength in 1 Vi in. x 8 in. sticks. Frozen material, overhanging from top banks, creates a winter hazard to shovel operators and equipment. Experiments are being conducted with a high-speed Hercules powder in an effort to eliminate this condition. Banks are trimmed by powdermen who lodge 8 or 10 bundles of powder, containing 15 or 20 sticks each, across the upper surfaces of each working face. To each bundle of powder is attached a primer with 6-ft fuse which is lighted as the powdermen, who have lowered themselves down the bank on ropes, ascend to safety. Three angle dozers, D8 caterpillars, make grades and move supplies for the average 31 drilling machines working daily. Compressed air is furnished by three Ingersol-Rand compressors, each with rated capacity of 3750 cu ft of air per min at 100 lb reservoir pressure.

IT is generally believed that the amount of diamond drilling will increase appreciably in the next decade, as the seaarch for minerals throughout the world becomes more difficult and intense. An attendant problem may be one of short diamond supply, resulting in higher bit and drilling cost. With this background, the U. S. Bureau of Mines' and the School of Mines at the University of Minnesota' have established comprehensive research programs in diamond drilling. One of the several aims is the design of a more efficient bit, which would lower diamond consumption and increase rate of advance, both essential in reducing drilling costs. The objective of the specific research problem" discussed in this paper was an investigation of the cutting action of the cliamonds set in a diamond drill bit, cutting action meaning the manner in which the diamonds cut or. loosen the minerals in the rocks being drilled. In the literature on cutting action such descriptive terms are used .as: grinding, wearing, cutting, breaking, shearing, scraping, melting, and chipping. These actions were seldom described or defined. Grodzinski describes the cutting action of a single diamond in the shaping of certain types of material as "breaking out chips of the material." Brittle mate-. rials break as small separate chips, and tough materials, because of heat generated, give a continuous chip. Deeby said about diamond drills: "When diamonds are forced into the formation and rotated, they either break the bond holding the rock particles together, or they cause conchoidal fracture of the rock itself. The former action occurs when drilling in sandstones, siltstones, shales, etc. and the latter action when drilling in chert, flint, or quartz." He said that diamonds cut on the "grinding principle" but he does not define or elaborate on this action. The cutting action of diamonds on glass was first investigated about 1816 by Dr. W. H. Wol-laston, an English physicist. The best glass-cutting diamonds have a natural or artificially rounded cutting edge. This edge first indents the glass and then slightly separates the particles, forming a shallow and nearly invisible fissure. Since none of the material is removed, this action is one of splitting rather than cutting. No other reports of research work on the cutting action of the diamond were found, and further work was considered justified and advisable. It is impractical, even if possible, to observe directly the cutting action of a diamond drill bit in rock; therefore it was necessary to devise an indirect method. It was believed that a study of the following three observations would lead to a better understanding of the cutting action: 1—the appearance of the minerals or rock surface in the bottom of the hole, 2—the size, shape, and other characteristics of the drill cuttings, and 3—the condition of the diamonds in the bit. The cutting action in a particular rock probably varies with bit pressure and speed. If the bit were slowly lifted off the rock, the effect of decreasing pressure might obliterate those bottom hole characteristics that are specific at the test pressure. Likewise, if the drill were stopped with the bit still in contact with the bottom of the hole, then decreasing speed effects would tend to obliterate the characteristics at the set test conditions. Therefore, in order to preserve those cutting effects impressed on the rock at test conditions, it seemed necessary to lift the bit off the bottom of the hole almost instantaneously once drilling conditions, i.e., revolutions per minute, pressure, and water flow became constant. In addition to observing the cuttings, the bit, and the bottom of hole, it seemed desirable to collect some quantitative data for purposes of correlation with the observations and for a record of bit performance. Consequently such data as revolutions per minute, force applied, and rate of advance of the bit were recorded. Six rock types, listed in Table I, were chosen for the tests. It was felt that these rocks had most of the variable characteristics of texture, bonding, and mineral hardness met in the common rocks generally being drilled. The sandstone was so poorly cemented as to be friable, even though most of the cement was silica. The limestone, though well cemented, was quite porous. Originally it was planned to conduct the tesk work with a full-scale drill unit, using EX bits, 7/8-in. core, 11/4-in. OD. The drill worked well, but was too cumbersome for rapid, accurate drilling of many short holes (1 ½-in.) in varied rock types. A new

Sublevel stoping was first developed in the Michigan iron mines many years ago. Since that time this method, and modifications with long hole drilling, have been used in a number of non-ferrous mines and have been described in various papers and articles. With a few exceptions, the operations where sublevel methods have been applied are producers of large daily tonnages from ore bodies of considerable size. In selecting mining methods for small properties or relatively small detached ore bodies, sublevel methods often have been overlooked. The method has been used successfully in relatively small operations at Copper Canyon, Nevada, and, more recently, in mining small ore bodies at Darwin, Calif. As a result of this experience, we believe that a review of the general procedure, the advantages noted, and the results obtained will be of interest to many operators of relatively small mines. General Description Briefly, sublevel stoping consists of, first, driving sublevel drifts at predetermined vertical intervals through the length of the stope block; second, breaking an initial mining slot across the stope; third, driving crosscut benches from each sublevel by slabbing into the slot; and, fourth, breaking the ground between benches. Applicability Since this is an open stope method, it requires wall rock that will stand over reasonable stope lengths without caving or excessive slabbing. Ore must be moderately firm but need not be hard. The method is best adapted to steep dipping, tabular or lenticular ore bodies but may be applied to ore bodies of almost any shape if their vertical extent is appreciable. It can be used with dips that are too flat for successful shrinkage stopes and can be modified for use with slushers on dips below about 40". Initial mining at the Copper Canyon operation consisted of sublevel stopes for the wider ore sections and shrinkage stopes for the narrow sections where ore widths averaged about 15 ft. After some experience and a study of comparative results on completed stope blocks, sublevels were substituted for shrinkage stopes even in the narrow ore widths. Practical stope lengths depend upon the character of the walls and the continuity of values within the ore body. Where blocks of low grade or waste are included in the stoping limits, these areas can readily be left as pillars for intermediate wall support and longer stope lengths may be planned. Raises can be spotted in narrow or low grade areas and stope lengths adjusted accordingly. Stoping Details To illustrate stoping details, assume that we have an ore shoot 15 to 30 ft wide and about 200 ft long, with walls that would stand over a stope length of 80 to 90 ft (Fig1). PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENT Preliminary development for sublevel stoping would be simple. A service raise is driven at about the center of the block and stope limits planned to leave a pillar around this raise. Sublevel drifts driven each way from this central raise will outline the

IT is notable that the first large-scale mine operation equipped entirely with detachable bits was the Badger State mine of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Butte, Montana, just 30 years ago. This mine in 1922 was producing approximately 1200 tons of ore per day. Much of the data presented in C. L. Berrien's article' describing the development and installation of the Hawkesworth detachable drill bit were obtained from these operations. As in any pioneering effort, no precedent existed and many difficult problems required solution, so that the changeover to detachable bits at all Butte hill mines was not completed for 6 years. There was widespread disbelief as to the probable efficiency of the new installation. Some attempts were made in 1931 by the owners of the Hawkesworth patents to interest Ontario gold mine operators in the bit. These efforts were not successful, but they undoubtedly stimulated thinking which resulted in the invention and patenting of several well-known Canadian detachable bits, one of which is now a widely used throwaway bit. The success of the Butte installation also led to the development of the threaded type of bit connections by several well-known manufacturers, and in 1935 these bits were introduced to the mining industry on a national scale. The original Hawkesworth bit was not provided with a water hole but, depended upon water passing through the clearance opening between the tongue in the bit and the groove in the rod to flush cuttings from the drill hole, see Fig. 1. In December 1935 it was found that this method of introducing drilling water to the bit face resulted in high dust counts. To correct this a water hole was drilled on the central axis of the bit, passing through the tongue. Unfortunately, quenching water would rise through the small water hole, spot-hardening the tongue to cause breakage, never completely eliminated. In the fall of 1936 large-scale tests indicated that savings would be effected by use of a threaded type of bit, which was therefore adopted as standard for all Butte mines. This type of bit was used until 1947, when it was superseded by a one-use slip-on type. Since the first use of the Hawkesworth bit every detachable bit of importance has been investigated, and where advantages which might reduce costs or increase efficiency were indicated, substantial tests of the bit were carried on in the Butte mines. When tests demonstrated the advisability of changing from one kind of detachable bit to another the change was made at one level or in one area each day until the new rod and bit equipment was used throughout the mine. This involved a minimum of cost and disruption of drilling. Intelligent selection of a detachable bit to obtain optimum results requires careful consideration to achieve a balance between the three principal types of equipment used in the drilling process: 1—drill bits, 2—drill steel, and 3—drilling machines. Optimum results imply maximum output and minimum cost per unit of output. Since every rock type differs in drillability and it is generally impractical to provide equipment for more than one or two types of rock which may occur in one operation, selection of equipment must encompass average drilling conditions. However, on exceptional occasions several widely differing conditions may make it mandatory to provide equipment best suited to each condition. The choice of rock-drilling equipment is a most controversial subject and one that is further complicated by unreliable and frequently misleading performance claims. Small operators without the means for making accurate evaluations of equipment frequently suffer from these over-enthusiastic claims. It is apparent from experience in rock drilling throughout the world that rock drillability is not alike in any two places, and that selection of proper equipment can only be made after conducting thorough trials of various types of equipment. Some recent drilling tests in tactite and hornstone at the Darwin, California mine of the Anaconda Co. present some interesting clues on rock drillability. Microscopic examination of thin sections of these rocks reveals that mineral composition and rock texture are equally important in governing drillability. The Darwin hornstone is at times so abrasive that the carbide bit cutting edges become flattened to 3/32 in. in 2 to 4 ft of drilling, and some carbide bits were dulled to this point after 9 to 10 in. of drilling. This wear was determined to be the proper point for resharpening to eliminate carbide insert breakage or breakage of the steel rod when drilling with 1½ to 1?-in. bits, with a drifter of 2 3/4-in. diam and 90 to 100 psi air pressure, see Supplement A. Before considering the merits of various bit designs it may be well to review the mechanics of drilling rock with percussion drills. A sharp bit cuts by penetration and chipping. IN the development of iron mines and production of iron ore from the Marquette range, drilling blast-holes is an important phase of the mining cycle. The ground drilled in ore production can be classified into two main categories, soft hematite and hard hematite or magnetite. Within these categories the material exhibits a wide range of penetrability by percussion drills. Development work encounters various types of rock. Slate and altered basic intrusives constitute the softer types commonly encountered. Harder materials are represented mainly by greywacke, quartzite, iron formation, and diorite. Prior to the first tungsten carbide trials in late 1947 and early 1948, hard-rock and ore drilling was done with steel jackbits starting at 21/4-in. diam. These were reconditioned by hot milling. Automatic or handcrank 31/2-in. drifters were employed, mounted on Jumbos, posts and arms, or tripods, depending upon the working place. With the exception of shaft sinking jobs where 55-lb sinker machines were and still are used with 1-in. quarter octagon steel, the other production and development mining utilized 11/4-in. round and Leyner-lugged steel. The following properties have been selected as typical examples wherein carbide bit applications have proved economical. The Mather mine "A" and "B" shafts and Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. mines are soft ore mines where insert bits are used in rock development only. The Greenwood mine, Inland Steel Co., Champion mine, North Range Mining Co., and Cliffs shaft mine, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., are hard ore mines where all drilling is done with tungsten carbide bits. Mother Mine "A" Shaft In the Mather mine "A" shaft and other soft ore properties where only rock development work is done with the tungsten carbide bits, several types and makes of bits have been tried since early 1948. The greatest proportion of failures have been at the connection end, although the early trials with the 13 Series Carset 11/2-in. bit used in conjunction with 31/2 -in. automatic-feed drifters, showed an equal amount of shattered inserts. To combat this shattering, the 31/2 -in. drifters were replaced by 3-in. drifters, thus eliminating, for the most part, insert failures. However, the attachment end of the rod continued to be the main source of trouble. The greatest amount of failure was in the stud or at the upset section approximately 2 in. behind the drive shoulder of the rod. Heat treatment was changed several times as well as the composition of the alloy studs. Since this failed to correct the trouble, a decision was made to change to a heavier attachment section. Timken 11/2-in., type M, bits were then employed and showed an exceptional improvement. The rods are discarded when the thread contour shows sharpening or wear on the shoulder. It was also learned that the Timken insert did not show as rapid gage and cutting edge wear as did competitive makes, and footage per use increased by approximately 50 pct. Prior to the Timken trials the average life per bit at the Mather mine "A" shaft on 6-ft change chain-feed drifters was 500 ft, and the rod life at the connection end was 50 ft. The Timken bit with chrome-plated thread averaged 1200 ft, and rod life increased to as much as 500 ft. However, the life of the connection end was much better on shorter length drill rods or in places where machines with 34-in. change were used. The bit thread continued to be the point of ultimate failure with thread strippage, constituting the cause for discard of bits. In one of the new development headings, harder rock was encountered for approximately 800 ft, dropping the life per bit to a low of 90 ft with shank and thread life of rods dropping to approximately 125 ft average. The stripped bits were then welded to the rods, increasing the life per bit by 75 to 100 pct. The rod transportation for main level development was not a problem so intraset rods were tried. Intraset rods have tungsten carbide inserts set into the rods proper by the manufacturer and can be obtained with chisel or four point bits. This type of rod eliminates the need for any connection and the steel being a special alloy will show more feet drilled per rod. The first trial was made with eight rods, and final results averaged 350 ft per rod, six of the rods worked the life of the bit end, and two broke shanks at less than 50 ft. The preceding example showed a considerable improvement, so additional steel of the same type was purchased, but its use has been limited to main level drifting only, because of the handling problem involved in transportation of the complete rod to mine shops for resharpening. Further trials are being made on improving the life per detachable bit by chrome plating. To date, the chrome plating shows an improvement of approximately 100 pct. However, final results will not be known until the present long term trials have been completed. Mother Mine "B" Shaft In November 1947, tungsten carbide bits were first tried at the Mather mine "B" shaft. The use of 1%-in. Carset 13 Series bits, for drilling the 72-hole, 7-ft shaft round, decreased the drilling time from an average of 41/2 hr per round required with steel bits, to 2 hr with insert bits. Probably the newest thing in mining safety, or safety for mines, is the apparent dissatisfaction on the part of the mineral industries, as represented by both management and labor, and the general public of the Nation, with the safety record of the mining industry. This is reflected by published comments and papers in the technical press;l-9 in labor periodicals,10,11 in popular journals and periodicals,l2, 13 and in the daily press; also by discussions of the Safety Committees sponsored by the National Safety Council,9, 14-15 the American Mining Congress,l.l6 the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers,2,4 the Mine Inspectors' Institute of Amerthe Coal Mining Institute of America,5 19 the American Standards Association, and others.20.21 Mining safety is a joint problem of management and the individual workman. Safety is not attained and will not be attained solely by laws, decrees, and commands because, if it could be done in this manner, acceptable mining safety would have been achieved long ago by the individual states in our Nation and by the nations abroad. The best safety performance is found at plants where management provides a safe environment for the workers; where supervision is efficient and super- visors, others concerned with promoting safety, and the individual worker know through training, experience, and personal contact the safe and unsafe practices of their field; and where the trained individual worker has become safety-minded by experience, quiet influence, unconscious suggestion, and personal guidance. Despite what may be said to the contrary, progress has been and is being made in mining safety. This is shown in Fig 1 to 4. It is beyond the scope of this paper to give possible reasons for the valleys and peaks in the fatal-injury rates. Some recent factors that appear to be contributing to the improvement in these rates are briefly discussed. Aside from mining equipment, "what's new in mining safety" for some mines has been in effect or was tried by others long ago. A safety pro- gram is a living thing; as such, it must be vitalized and continuously fed with enthusiasm, constructive action, and improvements. Because safety is concerned with human conduct, it is necessary to practice safety at all times; if not, it is soon forgotten, and accidents occur. Mining-safety Records The large employment and production concerned with anthracite contribute much to the mining-safety records of the mineral industry. Approximately 81,000 persons are. employed in this industry having mines concentrated in an area of 480 square miles in northeastern Pennsylvania. Because of the achievement of the anthracite industry in safety during 1948, the other branches of the mineral industry can profit by a study of what has been done to achieve that record. Where one mineral is produced by other large groups having methods of mining that are similar in many respects to the anthracite-mining methods, an achievement in such a large industry is important. Salient factors concerned with safetye in the anthracite industry are: no radical change has occurred in the mining-safety regulations pertaining to anthracite mines. "MR. CHAIRMAN AND GENTLEMEN :I begin this talk by making a couple of comments which are of the nature of disclaimers.Firstly, and as the Chairman has otherwise indicated, I was neither ""born into"" nor have I spent more than a few years of my professional life in the mining industry. I mention this because many might, and perhaps rightly, consider that an added qualification in presenting a report of what the industry has accomplished. Indeed, I am not here to blindly defend all of its actions and inactions in respect to environmental control over the years. Nor am I here to seek absolution of the industry's past transgressions - if indeed that is the word. Mistakes might be a better one. I concluded some time ago that the effects of those mistakes are too difficult to assess against the sea of errors of our total society. I should mention too that I am not an environmental engineer or specialist - only a portion of my interest is involved with this field. Perhaps this permits a perspective which allows a more accurate and objective view.One further comment here. My job today, as I understand it, is to generally report upon the nature and extent of the response of the metals mining industry to control of the environment. In the case of an industry operating at more than a hundred locations and for various reasons at various stages of progress, it is not an easy job. On the other hand, I wanted to avoid the use of generalities because, especially within the context of environmental or ecological opinion and of the practice of condemnation of industrial segments, I think we've had about enough of generalities until we know far more than we do.Finally, I am quite aware that a statement of future plans to achieve environmental control does not impress or satisfy as many people as it may have done some years ago. Public opinion demands to know what is currently underway, today."

I HAVE been puzzled by two lines of thought'; one emanating from Washington, D. C., to the effect that we must all cheer up, that in a very short time, measured in terms of months, prices would begin to recover, business would become normal, and prosperity would continue on its way just as before the interruption of a year ago; and a second, coming from certain industrialists and economists, expressing fears that all commodity prices were in for a long downward trend, which would cause much unemployment, eventually drag down wages and so restrict purchasing power as to further aggravate the situation. One basis for the fear of a downward trend in commodity prices' is that ifter great wars a depression could last for something like 40 years-the downward trend to such a depression after our recent World War having been postponed for some reason or other; and the basis for another fear was that the production of gold was becoming less. I had 'also been trying for some time past to refresh my recollection as to how my ow11 particular lead interest climbed out of the depression of 1893; and as all the metals have had, and still have. relative values and prices, I can best express what I have in mind by talking principally about lead.
