IN THE operation of oil properties there are various difficulties with pumping wells which can often be overcome or greatly lessened if sufficient attention is, directed towards pump and tubing problems. The difficulties referred to are the wearing out of pumps, sanding up of pumps, and the sanding up of the hole. As the perforations in the oil strings are large and the oil and sand loose and unconsolidated considerable trouble is often encountered in pumping wells due to the ease with which' the sand can come into the holes. DETERMINING FLUID LEVEL In determining the proper depth at which to tube a well it is essential to first find out something about the behavior of the fluid in 'the hole: Facts in regard to this natter can be obtained by finding the fluid level on pulling the tubing, by making a pumping test on the well tubed to various depths, and by bailing tests during cleaning out work. In ordinary oil field operations it is customary to take the fluid level at the time of pulling the tubing. This 'can only be done when the pump is not sanded up. THERE was a time when the selection of fire brick was .left to the judgment of the head bricklayer of the plant, whose choice was not unaffected by a box of Christmas cigars from a friendly salesman. But the days are past when it was generally believed, with complacent philosophy, that bricks were bricks without much distinction, and should be bought on a price basis alone. Gone, too, is the belief that in certain types of industrial work the eventual failure of refractories was assured. Modern metallurgical practice, with its trend toward handling larger tonnages at higher temperatures, demands the use of refractories that cannot be supplied by random guess. The logical development is to inquire into the properties of the brick to be purchased, and this resolves itself into the use of specifications. In 1925, the General Refractories Co., with the active support and hearty cooperation of some of its larger customers, established a laboratory, at its Baltimore plant, for testing and research in refractories. This was the outgrowth of a growing appreciation of the value of research in the refractory field. Since then the work has become more involved' and the aims more ambitious, so that the present laboratory now employs a staff of 11 men working, under the direction of trained refractory technologists, on problems of research as well as the routine control of manufacture. It is believed s that `this type of laboratory is a comparative novelty among refractory manufacturing plants. It handles the testing and research work for all the 15 plants of the organization. Being at one of the works has the advantage of making it possible to carry on large scale plant tests on new products after the preliminary laboratory tests have been successfully completed.

INTRODUCTION Since the introduction of longwall coal mining systems, reliable predictions of roof support requirements at the face and the roof caveability in the gob area have been major contributors to the success of the longwall face by means of safety and face productivity. That is, the successful operation of a longwall is well-served by good regular caving of the gob. In recent times, with the advent of increased coal face mechanization and capital investment, the evaluation of the feasibility of longwall mining has become essential. In the United States, where a face unit for a face length of about 150 metres may cost around $6 million, a quantitative system that would assist in selecting the best equipment for the coal would prove extremely beneficial. There have been many such varied investigations in the past few years. A vast -amount of work has been invested principally by West Germany [3, 7, 8, 91 , Poland [I, 101 , United Kingdom [4, 5, lo], France [4], and South Africa [4]. It is the object of this paper to review this previous research work and give an outline that may be used as guidelines for long- wall evaluation. Essentially, for the initial design phase for a longwall system, account must be taken of the geometry of the coal panel, its position relative to the surface (depth), direction of the coal cleat system, faults and in-situ stresses and other neighboring workings in the same coal seam and other seams both above and below. The advance of the coal panel disturbs the stress field and in doing so creates an abutment zone around the face. At this stage the condition of homogeneity of the surrounding rock mass does not apply. The magnitude of the rock strata pressure may exceed the ultimate strength of the rocks and create zones of clastic, plastic and elastic material, the limits of which are difficult to determine. The collapse of the gob and resulting expansion of the displaced waste roof rock, create a statically undefined support complicating an already unclear rock structure. For example, it is often a point of debate whether, indeed, the vertical strata pressure develops to regain the original magnitude of virgin stress. Under these post-failure circumstances an analytical approach based on simplified and idealized assumptions can only be considered a very general approximation. Theoretical concepts, however, may be adequately supplemented by empirical methods that are based on numerous underground observations and surveys [3, 4, 7, 8]. These methods employ the use of rock indices that very handily correspond to the competence of the roof rock mass. Scale model work [3, 41 , using equivalent materials representing the surrounding rock mass within the coal seam zone, have given valuable qualitative and sometimes quantitative data in addressing the behaviour of the rock mass around longwall panels. To characterize the state of art of caveability predictioqthe principal concepts will be reviewed with special emphasis placed on practicality for the planning of longwall operation. It has been the general observation of the authors that many of the literature surveys published in English often neglect reference to other international mining literature. It is with this point in mind that an overall review has been written including mining concepts identified with the principal coal mining countries. THEORETICAL CONCEPTS Arching Theory For the development of this theory, assumption has been made that an extracted height, h, in a coal seam results in an extracted panel of width, w . Also, the coal seam is horizontal and the rock strata of both the roof and floor are homogeneous. The primary (virgin) stress distribution will change in the roof as well as the floor. As a result of lack of support caused by the excavation (in the gob area) an additional load is developed due to the redistribution of the load around the sides of the panel, referred to as the abutment, R, where: [ ]

DURING the past year or two considerable time and money have been spent in developing equipment for tubing large-volume high-pressure oil and gas wells without loss of production. That the efforts have met with success is proved by the fact that any properly cased well, regardless of its production or regardless of its rock pressure or working pressure, can now be safely tubed with no appreciable loss of production, provided experienced crews handle the new equipment. It is conceded that a far better gas-oil ratio can be secured by flowing a well through tubing of a proper diameter-the diameter of the tubing depending, of course, upon the volume of fluid and gas and the depth of the well-than by the more usual method of installing a choke at the mouth of the well. Where possible it is becoming the practice to bring wells in through tubing, though in the majority of instances this is not feasible. In many instances it has developed, after a well has been brought in through tubing, that the tubing installed is either too large or too small for the most efficient operation or that the well had not been drilled deep enough. The equipment described in this paper, in the hands of experienced men, permits the tubing of these wells after they have been brought in, with the size of tubing then determined by actual observation to be best suited for each particular well, and with no danger of the well getting out of control, of catching fire, of drilling itself deeper, or of any loss of production. The deeper the flowing production with the consequent future higher lifting costs, the more essential it is that the size of tubing used be such as to give the best possible gas-oil ratio. The ability to bring in these deep wells through the casing and then, immediately after their completion, regardless of volume or pressure, to tube them with the size of tubing that permits the most efficient use of the gas present will doubtless save many dollars.

(written discussion *).-Whatever processes of appraisal have been found most correct and feasible in one field or group of fields will generally prove most adaptable in others. So far as the California fields are concerned, Mr. Requa's paper appears to outline the most up-to-date processes of appraisal. It remains, then, to discuss and adapt these and to make such revisions in methods and processes of calculation as will give us results elsewhere. The trouble about most attempts to place a value on oil lands, whether in this country or elsewhere, has been that many of the so-called "experts" called upon to express an opinion either have not possessed the requisite engineering and geological knowledge to make an accurate appraisal of the lands, or that they were not furnished with sufficient information for the purpose in hand. The Independent. 011. Producers' Agency of California, for whom Mr. Requa's original report was prepared, had many advantages in this respect not generally available to engineers making reports, as all existing information seems to have been at the experts' disposal within the limits of a large number of properties, practically commensurate with the extent of the fields in question. Hence the report could be and was more accurate than any similar report for a single company is likely to be in other fields. Very few companies are so exempt from competition that all the data on neighboring leases of other companies will be freely turned over to them. In many companies, certain available data are concealed from the engineer who makes the reports, particularly if the properties are supposed to be worth less than their apparent value. In the case of other companies, having the best of intentions, the data are insufficient to help the engineer greatly in his appraisal, simply because the oil business has been so, unsystematic in most fields that only the largest and wisest companies have kept accurate figures regarding runs and gravity of oil from individual wells and from different depths. In many wells, which ran wild for clays or weeks in the older fields, there was a waste which is not recordable with exactness. These and many other difficulties confront even the most experienced expert in actual practice outside of the California fields. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

Some of the issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and non-metal mines. Also, operations are faced with demands from reserves that are deeper, hotter and further away from fans and shafts, not to mention increased production demands. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal non-metal operations but some may be applicable to coal too. OPTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT Some of the areas to be addressed are shop ventilation methods, auxiliary equipment areas, dedicated intakes and returns, optimizing development, examination of mine airway utilization and alternative ventilation methods. UNDERGROUND SHOPS First, examine what is being done with the underground shop air. If it is being coursed directly to the returns there may be some potential to better utilize this, in most cases, relatively contaminant free air. Research the legal options for ventilating mine shops. MSHA regulations in 30CFR 57.4761 (1) allow the following options: To confine or prevent the spread of toxic gases from a fire originating in an underground shop where maintenance work is routinely done on mobile equipment, one of the following measures shall be taken: use of control doors or bulkheads, routing of the mine shop air directly to an exhaust system, reversal of mechanical ventilation, or use of an automatic fire suppression system in conjunction with an alternate escape route. The alternative used shall at all times provide at least the same degree of safety as control doors or bulkheads. Discussion This regulation gives some operators flexibility in ventilating underground shop facilities. If shop air is to be coursed through the work area, and then directly to the mine return, the question should be asked ? is the quality of air good enough to be reused in the mine, and if so, what are the risks? Can the risks be accommodated and managed to accomplish the change? If so, a considerable increase in mine level airflow could be attained by reusing shop air. Clearly, regulations are a minimum standard, and can be exceeded. Metal non-metal mine regulations are not as specific as coal due to the multitude of different mining methods and conditions utilized. Risks must be thoroughly examined and addressed to assure a safe environment. Issues Determine what contaminants are being produced in the work area ? welding fumes, diesel exhaust, paint fumes, chemicals and solvents, etc. Survey the area and determine exposures. MSHA requires exposure monitoring in 30 CFR 57.5002 (1) of dust, gasses mists and fumes to assure air quality is being met. Perform surveys and examine existing data to quantify personal and area concentrations of contaminants. Often there is adequate circulation such that exposure levels in shop work areas are low. After sending shop air back into the system any contaminants would be further lowered by dilution with other mine intake air downstream. Look at the shop work schedule. If only on day shift, the other two shifts and possibly weekends have no activity or source of contamination to affect the ventilation system. The worst case planning scenario would be a shop fire. Study and simulate how this would affect the mine and shop area. MSHA regulations require an escape route and a fire suppression system be installed and maintained as follows in 30 CFR 57.4671 (1): (d) Automatic fire suppression system and escape route. If used as an alternative, the automatic fire suppression system and alternate escape route shall meet the following requirements: (1) The suppression system shall be? (d)(1)(i) Located in the shop area; (d)(1)(ii) The appropriate size and type for the particular fire hazards involved; and (d)(1)(iii) Inspected at weekly intervals and properly maintained. (2) The escape route shall bypass the shop area so that the route will not be affected by a fire in the shop area. Case Study In an underground room and pillar mine, active mine workings were advancing further away from the mine shaft with deteriorated returns and leakage having a negative effect on ventilation airflows to the face. Mine level airflows were 236 m3/s (500,000 cfm) and shop airflows were 24 m3/s (50,000 cfm) (see Figure 1A). No additional capacity was available at the main surface fan. A solution was to utilize the shop air then send it to the mine areas instead of directly to the return. Considerable information on shop air quality and exposures from many years of operation was examined and no negative data was discovered. A risk analysis determined that moving forward with a shop air reuse program was desirable. A plan was developed, analyzed and decision to proceed approved by mine management. The change was simulated on the computer with the USBM/MTU MFire program before being implemented. This included utilizing fire scenarios to examine potential exposures to inby mining sections and plan escape routes. Methods to increase the gas penetration through sinter layers. In the field of agglomeration, sintering has gained importance, specially in Europe; in Best-Europe this trend will continue till the year 1980, since it is quite probable that in the blast furnace burdens with 50-60 sinter, 10-20 % pellets and 20-25 % ore lumps will be employed. In order to meet this demand for sinter, new sinter bands with reaction areas between 300-400 m2 will be constructed. Chemical and physical phenomena during the Suction-Draught-sinter process. Iron ore sintering is generally considered as a burning process where the material contains 90-95 % ash i.e. non-combustible ingredients. Sintering represents a heterogeneous exothermic reaction in which the chemical phenomena as combustion, calcination, hydration, reduction and oxydation are superposed by physical phenomena. The physical phenomena are devided into material transport and simultaniously occurring heat transport processes. The velocity of these combined physico-chemical reactions i.e. the change in the reaction site per unit time determine the efficiency of the sinter process. The gas permeability as an important criterion of heat transport during the Suction-Draught sinter process.

The Bituminous Coal Mining Industry of the Federal Republic of Germany produces nearly 100 million t/yr of clean coal. The largest coal mining area is the Ruhr District with dimensions of 100 x 40 km (65 x 25 miles). Figure 1: Here is the general administration of Ruhrkohle Akteingesellschaft RAG with its three divisions. Other coal mining areas in Germany are the Saar District and the Aachen District. Ruhrkohle produces 70 million t/yr of clean coal. The company operates 28 mines in the Ruhr District with an average raw coal production of 18000 t/day. Their average mining depth is 831 m (2740 ft.) and the average seam thickness is 177 cm (70 in.). Figure 2: Preparation plant reject is 44.6%. All following production figures will be with reference to raw coal because the raw coal production is the technically relevant number. Mining operations are mainly in non-dipping coal deposits whereby mechanized equipment for flat seams is also applied to deposits dipping up to 45? Coal extraction is done exclusively by the longwall method. Approximately 200 longwall installations are in production at any time. The average longwall length is 221 m (730 ft) ranging between 140 and 290 m (460 ft and 960 ft). The average longwall advance of all operations is 2.8 m/day (8.4 ft per day). Average production

Drilling accuracy is the foundation to any successful blast operation. Even the best blasting practices cannot overcome poor drilling and still obtain desired results. Inaccuracies in boreholes can result in flyrock, increased vibration, uneven floor, and other undesired effects. As depth increases, variation in actual burden and spacing is expected even if collars are located precisely. Problems arise when this deviation reaches a point where it adversely affects the function of the blast design. Not only can unsafe conditions such as insufficient burden at the face develop, but poor fragmentation can compound adverse effects. As with any troubleshooting, problems cannot truly be fixed if they cannot be measured. As a result, significant work has been done in the past on this subject. Currently, there are both cheap and expensive methods used to quantify deviation for a given borehole. However, implementation of these techniques is limited. In general production blasts, little is known about the variance in designed versus true borehole geometry. This is especially true if the blaster does not see telltale signs of drilling deviation. However, losses in blast performance may exist and provide an opportunity to obtain better fragmentation and reduce fines. As drill and blast operations strive for better optimization, greater focus is being placed on drilling accuracy and solutions to this problem. The following paper details the use of several current methods for deviation measurement in order to help prevent compromises of safety and improve overall blast performance.

Cemented rockfill is a key component in the success of underground mining at the Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture. The Murray and SSX mines are characterized by relatively poor rock mass quality, and the goal of complete mining recovery makes maintaining a high quality backfill product vital to the safety and efficiency of the mining operations. A large portion of the ore production from the Murray mine originates from drifting under backfill. Modelling studies performed to investigate induced loading of the backfill were used to develop engineering specifications for the backfill material. Operations history has shown an almost 100 percent stability of the backfill when mining is carried out beneath it. The volume of backfill required each year (approximately 300,000 tons) and the required cement content have a significant impact on the total mining costs. The potential for cost savings associated with higher replacement of cement with Type "C" fly ash and the implementation of a backfill strength management strategy were therefore evaluated.

A Paul Wurth desenvolveu uma metodologia de diagnose que avalia as condições dos elementos principais que compõem as plantas de Coqueria, dentre elas: estrutura da alvenaria refratária, estruturas e componentes metálicos, análise do controle térmico e regime de pressões, conjunto das máquinas móveis. Através de inspeções visuais e coleta de informações de processo e rotina adotada pela equipe de preservação da planta de Coqueria, são elaborados procedimentos e recomendações que visam à extensão da vida útil do equipamento. A Diagnose é uma técnica que auxilia as equipes de Coqueria a entenderem em que situação o equipamento se encontra e contribui com as melhores práticas adotadas no mercado para o prolongamento da vida útil. Ela deve ser repetida com frequência de modo a atualizar a situação da Bateria de Coque, verificar o efeito das ações tomadas pela equipe de preservação e propor novas recomendações. A Diagnose ainda permite identificar a idade real de desgaste das estruturas da Bateria em comparação com sua idade cronológica, permitindo que as usinas planejem investimentos de maior porte.

For the first time, the idea of sustainable development was recognised at a high political level at the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 (UNEP, 1992). Then the governments of the world committed themselves to promote sustainable development in their national activities and international co-operation. In 2001, the European Council approved the EU Strategy for Sustainable Development (European commission, 2011). This complements and supports the EU?s so-called Lisbon Strategy (European council, 2000) on competitiveness. The revised Strategy for Sustainable Development was approved in June 2006. Recently sustainability has had an important role in policy and decision-making while the public awareness towards limits of the environment has been rising. However, the indicators of industrial sustainability satisfy primarily the needs of corporate management and global investors. The information is often broad and non-specific and might occasionally even give a false impression. Moreover, contradictions between environmental, economical and social aspects also point out the unreliability of existing sustainability indexes. Therefore, the current state of affairs serves the interests of neither the industry nor the policy makers. Current corporate sustainability indexes and indicator systems need to be assessed with scientific methods encompassing the identification of their strengths and weaknesses. This requires quantitative and qualitative assessment and synthesis of existing indexes and indicator systems, providing new data on the functionality of existing corporate sustainability indicators. Therefore, the assessment lays the foundation for the development of new, more balanced sustainability index. Our first aim in this multidisciplinary article is to analyse existing global sustainability indexes for process industry. Second, we will introduce a first version of a new sustainability index for process industry, which includes the environmental, social and economic impacts of the plant, as well as legislation aspects.

"The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. The monitoring system has been one of the key to the success of the project.The excavation of tunnels under the water table, with a hydraulic head of over 10 m in not homogeneous soils having different mechanical properties and permeability and below existing sensitive structures, involves special ground freezing sequences and methods, as well as peculiar drilling systems and operations, such as TDDT (Trevi Directional Drilling Technology).THE NEW “C” LINE OF ROME’S METROThe world’s most complex and extraordinary Metro System is currently being built in the heart of Rome. Its underground route stretches underneath the most important monuments, churches and historical buildings.Rome’s Metro Line C is the longest urban underground railway in Italy and it is the first line in Rome to extend further east to the Great Ring Road, thus bridging the gap between the farthest suburbs and the Historical Centre. It is an original project, carried out mostly underground at a depth of 25/30 metres below road level."

"Diaphragm walls are known as underground structural elements commonly used for retention systems and permanent foundation walls or elements. Of course they can also be used as deep groundwater barriers. This paper will focus on the construction work in an urban area like Sao Paulo. The Line 5 of Metro Sao Paulo is one of four network expansion projects undertaken at the same time. The projects will cover various areas of the city. The Line 5 on São Paulo’s south-side will be extended 7.1mi (11.5km) to serve 770,000 riders per day, stretching a total of 12.4mi (19.9km) along 17 stations. The extension line will facilitate access to the city’s central section and the commercial and hospital districts located along the line. The Brooklin Station, subject of this paper, had to be carried out in a special five shaft shape design, shaft diameter 131ft (40m) each, without using ground anchors. A focus will be taken on the special requirements of the installation of the arrows as well as on the specialties of installation for the shaft shaped layout. Therefore, it was required to install a 3.3ft (1,000mm) diaphragm wall using a specific layout especially in the connecting sections of the shafts, the so called arrows, to provide a bearing area for the struts. Maximum wall depth was about 121ft (37m); the total volume was about 20,060 cubic yard (15,337m³). The paper will describe the construction method and the sequence of activities required for the construction of this diaphragm wall using a combination of hydraulic grab and trench cutter system.INTRODUCTIONThe Line 5 Extension, in the city of Sao Paulo/Brazil, is currently the most important investment in public transport by Sao Paulo state’s government. It will connect the south part of the city to the city center, crossing through four other major METRO lines and stations, all currently in operation. The extension includes a new parking yard for the trains and 11 new stations. The Brooklin Station is one of the new stations and has a unique geometry of five secant shafts. The station should open and operate in 2016.The original design included constructing five secant shafts stabilized by two plastic slurry walls using conventional grab technology. One of them was to contain the contamination plumes in the neighborhood and the other for temporary support to enable the excavation of the shafts. The final retaining wall design was reviewed and changed to a concrete structural diaphragm wall. The reason of design change was as well the reduction of construction time of the shafts by half to meet the schedule as to avoid dewatering effects in a geological region characterized by Quaternary sediments and environmental contamination plumes. It was the first time that a trench cutter (hydromill) was used in such a situation in Brazil. The cutter increased the quality of the joints by overcutting, and decreased the probability of having seepage into the shafts. The cutter created a seepage barrier and avoided movement of contamination."

Preliminary design is underway for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s (MWRA) next major tunnel program, the Metropolitan Water Tunnel Program (MWTP). The MWTP is the latest part of MWRA’s ongoing efforts to achieve redundancy for its metropolitan water transmission system including its historic deep rock City Tunnel, City Tunnel Extension and Dorchester Tunnels. The MWTP comprises several deep rock tunnels that will be approximately 10-foot to 12-foot finished diameter totaling just over fourteen miles long and ten connections to existing large diameter surface piping and pumping stations. This paper will present an update on current engineering and permitting efforts, packaging schemes, and the schedule to complete the MWTP.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA's) rapid transit system, Metro, ultimately will comprise 162.5 km (101 miles) of line divided among 10 routes. As shown in Figure 1, about 24 km (15 miles) of the system will consist of mined rock tunnels distributed along the A, B, C and K Routes. The structural construction contracts for all of the A, C and K Route rock tunnels are complete and trains are running in about one-third of them. A contract for construction of rock tunnel section B-9, the southernmost third of the B Route, was awarded on June 27, 1980. The final design of Sections B-10 and B-lla, the remainder of the rock tunnel portions of the B Route and the Metro system, are well advanced and should be under con¬struction by 1982. Of Metro's 87 stations, 11 will have been constructed by mining in solid rock, a not inconsiderable achievement, since each structure must be over 183 m (600 feet) long, wide enough to accommodate two trains and one or two passenger platforms, and high enough to achieve a stable arching action without encumbering columns. With the passage of years, some original priorities have been reordered, and ways have been sought to streamline and simplify this most complex of Metro structures without grossly violating the architectural standards that make it unique. This paper will summarize that search, and describe the design and construction aspects of the resulting product, the dual chamber rock tunnel station.

Commonly the most frequent method of calculating the overall mass balance of a multi mineral platinum-group metal (PGM) concentrator circuit in Southern Africa has been through the use of spreadsheets, typically Microsoft EXCEL®. While there are some advantages in using spreadsheet based mass balances during the conceptual design phase of the project, their use becomes limited in the detailed design phase of the project. This paper discusses the successful application of METSIM® for mass balancing of a PGM concentrator and highlights the benefits gained during the conceptual and design phase of the project.

"Process Safety Management for METTOP means avoiding risks as far as possible - but also dealing with the residual risk by using all existing management tools or external assistance, if required. The presented paper has two parts. The first one introduces a new and very safe cooling technology for metallurgical furnaces. The second part shows how to deal with the residual risk as well as minimize it by using the tapping area of an electric arc furnace as an example.Today more and more intense furnace operations require effective cooling in order to achieve low refractory wear and good furnace lifetime, making cooling technology an important aspect of furnace operation. However, the use of water - today’s standard cooling medium - has some disadvantages, as it can cause problems both during furnace start up and operation, namely hydration problems, corrosion, and explosion.To overcome the disadvantages of water, a new cooling technology using an alternative cooling medium, namely ISIS B (a special kind of ionic liquid) was developed. The main advantage of ISIS B is the fact that no explosion occurs when this liquid comes in contact with molten metal. The working temperature range of ISIS B of 50 to 200 °C results in other advantages as there are no corrosion problems and no risks of hydration.The fact that no explosion occurs when ISIS B contacts molten metal leads to a revolutionary solution for the metallurgical industry in terms of safety. Especially in critical areas - like tap-holes - new safety standards can be achieved.Together with the TÜV Austrian Holding AG a risk analysis was done for a water cooled tap-hole as well as for a tap-hole cooled with ionic liquids. It is shown that using the new technology the risk can be decreased dramatically and the importance of a best available technology is described."
