I. INTRODUCTION. DURING the past 50 years the attention of mining-men has been turned to Africa, and within the past decade prospecting-expeditions sent into Central Africa have resulted in the opening-up of several mines. Having recently spent two years in the Belgian Congo for the Société Internationale Forestiere et Miniere du Congo, it is our purpose to outline briefly the mining-conditions in that part of Central Africa. Before it became, in 1908, a Belgian colony, this region was known as the Congo Free State. II. LOCATION AND AREA. The Belgian Congo lies in southwestern Central Africa, west of the continental divide, is illustrated in Fig. 1. It has a coastline of but 20 miles on the Atlantic, but widens rapidly eastward to points 5° north and 14° south of the equator. Its area is 908,000 sq. miles, which is almost one-quarter that of the United States and Alaska, or more than one and one-half times that of Alaska. Stated in other terms, its area is nearly one-third that of the United States, exclusive of Alaska and the insular possessions, or more than that of all the United States east of the Mississippi river. Within the past decade, incidents of mining–community conflicts have grown dramatically and represent one aspect of a phenomenon known as social risk. Research published in 2014 indicates that a lack of social acceptance is now a leading and costly cause of delays for mining projects.The rise of social risk, complemented by the need to earn the trust of an increasing number of stakeholders so that mining projects can be developed effectively, is problematic for the industry. Conflicts are occurring in situations where companies are fully compliant with regulatory and legal requirements, despite initiatives by mining companies to earn social acceptance and despite the proliferation of tools to support corporate social responsibility. Intensifying the impact of social risk is the fact that it has increased during a time in the global mining sector when companies have had to grapple with declining commodity prices, increasing capital costs and debt levels and the challenges of mining lower-grade deposits.This paper will explore a hypothesis that in today’s interconnected society, social risk in the mining sector constitutes a legitimate business risk that must be managed strategically. The reality facing mining companies is that information, once considered confidential, now travels quickly on social networks and via a growing number of groups and individuals that have earned a legitimate right to be classified as stakeholders in projects that affect their communities. To be successful, it is suggested that companies will benefit from increasing internal collaboration and providing training to equip teams to mitigate social risk to mining projects and protect reputation capital. The paper is based upon PhD research being undertaken to assess the points of intersection between social risk and social responsibility during the construction stage of greenfield mining projects.CITATION:Fraser, J and Scoble, M, 2015. Introduction The US mineral industry in 1983 participated in the recovery from the recent recession. Compared with 1982, the value of raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8% to $21.2 billion. The $218 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output represented a 9% increase over 1982. Even in real terms, these figures reflect growth. Demand for nonfuel mineral materials, of course, depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1983. Of particular importance to the mineral industry were surges in key mineral-consuming sectors such as construction and automobile manufacturing. New housing starts rose one-third, to 1.7 million units, while automakers turned out about 35% more cars (6.8 million) and 25% more trucks (2.4 million) than in 1982. These are significant increases, even considering recent trends toward smaller, lighter vehicles, and multiple-unit housing. A comeback for the mineral industry, however, is bound to proceed unevenly, particularly at the beginning. Traditionally, the industry lags behind the rest of the economy during a recovery, and some mineral products respond to overall economic improvement more quickly than others. This pattern has been repeated many times and the industry is used to it. Mineral executives know it is best to be patient and cautious during the first stages of an economic upturn. Many experts say that it may take extraordinary toughness, patience, and caution this time around. Steel Improves Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - rose 14% to 77 Mt (85 million st), stimulating a 7% rise in domestic iron ore production to 39 Mt (38 million It). Still, the iron ore industry operated at less than half capacity, with most major mines remaining closed for part of the year. Iron ore imports dropped 24% to 10 Mt (11 million st), so demand was partly met by withdrawals from stocks. Despite the increase in steel production for 1983, output remained far below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1983 production was still 29% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity actually declined about 10% during the year to 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports, especially those from developing nations, as a major cause of domestic capacity loss. As long as steel production remains weak, steelmaking metals suffer. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about one-third capacity in 1983, with six of the 19 companies involved being closed all year. The US mined no manganese or chromium, and very little nickel, although the country's only nickel mine did resume production in November. Molybdenum production, at 13.6 t (15 st), was only about one-third as much as in 1982. The major molybdenum mines, Climax and Henderson in Colorado, remained closed all year. To meet demand, molybdenum stocks were halved to 19 t (21 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, dropped 30% to 1.1 kt (1,200 st) of contained metal. One of the most positive responses to the general economic recovery came from the aluminum smelting industry. By the end of the year, it was operating at about 79% capacity, compared to 59% in January. Nevertheless, the 3.3 Mt (3.64 million st) of primary aluminum produced represented only a slight increase over 1982. Total bauxite imports were about 27% below 1982 levels. As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalization, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that are suited to the contemporary and future mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more. In countries like Australia, where mining plays a crucial role in the economy, the need for curriculum updates is more pressing than ever. As the mining industry evolves with new technologies and sustainable practices, there is a growing demand for a workforce skilled in these modern approaches. Recognizing this necessity, universities such as the University of New South Wales and Curtin University have taken significant steps to revamp their educational programs. By updating their academic offerings, both universities aim to equip graduates with the necessary skills to drive innovation and sustainability in mining, supporting Australia’s development as a leader in this critical sector. Moreover, the selection of topics that drive curricula update and the focus of the research institutions in mining engineering must extend beyond mere technological and technical aspects to include social and ethical dimensions. In this context, the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, in association with the Colorado School of Mines, has introduced the topic of Humanitarian Engineering (HE) in 2020. HE is a socio-technical approach that focuses on developing engineering solutions that promote the sustainable development of communities addressing their basic needs and aiming to improve their quality of life (10, 18). By focusing on sustainable development, community engagement, and equitable resource distribution, HE helps the industry build positive relationships with stakeholders, reduce conflicts, and foster social license to operate. As the mining industry seeks sustainable and socially responsible practices, future engineers require training in this area to understand the broader impacts of their work, fostering a mindset that prioritizes community well-being and environmental stewardship alongside technical proficiency.

However, developing skills toward humanitarian engineering and sustainable mining among new generations of mining professionals remains a complex task. Integrating the necessary content to prepare future engineers for the multifaceted demands of the industry into a single study program poses significant challenges. To address these complexities, modern educational approaches such as the ones integrated in the mining engineering programs at Clausthal University of Technology can be leveraged to enhance both teaching and learning experiences (Binder, 2024b; Bothe-Fiekert et al., 2023; Nowosad et al., 2024). Innovative teaching methods, such as blended-learning, project-based learning, case studies, scenario simulations and interdisciplinary collaborations, can help bridge gaps by fostering critical thinking, creativity and empathy among students. By embracing modern pedagogical strategies, institutions can better equip future engineers to navigate the evolving landscape of the mining industry responsibly and effectively.

This paper summarises work undertaken to date as part of an investigation into the mineral resources of the proposedNorth West South Island National Park. The area covered by the proposed national park is underlain by many rock types that have undergone a long and complex history of evolution which has endowed it with some of the best potential for a wide range of different minerals in New Zealand. Many of these minerals occur only in this area or in Fiordland National Park.   The first gold-rush in the area occurred in 1856 and followed the discovery of payable gold at Lightbands Gully, south of Collingwood. The miners first focused on the alluvial deposits but soon shifted attention to lode potential. The total historical gold production for the area may be over 400 000 oz (NZ$250 - NZ$295.6 M at 1993 prices).   In addition to gold, a wide range of other minerals have been reported from the area including molybdenum, copper, nickel, zinc, silver, bismuth, stibnite, lead and antimony. The Onekaka iron-ore deposits have produced small tonnages of ochre and iron-ore at various times. Tungsten, platinoids and other metals have been. given only minor attention. The diverse geology of the Northwest Nelson has resulted in the occurrence of many industrial minerals which have been exploited in generally small-scale operations. Aggregate, chrysotile asbestos, clay, dolomite, marble, limestone, dimension stone, rip-rap, talc-magnesite and wollastonite have all been produced.

Minnesota is a major mining state. This statement is not a dream or stretch goal but is a fact. As reported in a recent edition of Mining Engineering magazine, Minnesota ranks as the third largest state in terms revenues generated from nonfuels mineral production. The vibrancy of the mining sector in Minnesota can be attributed to several factors. The northeastern corner of the state is home to Minnesota?s iron range, one of North America?s largest deposits of iron ore. Iron ore from Minnesota is a strategic resource that has been [ ] instrumental to the nation?s development ? 90 percent of the iron used to build ships and planes during World War II came from Minnesota. Taconite pellets now produced from openpit mines on the iron range are shipped to steel mills worldwide. The growing appetite for steel in China and India has reignited once moribund mining operations throughout the iron range.

Minor elements determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy include: zinc, cadmium, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, manganese, and iron. Of these elements, only three; zinc, cadmium, and copper are found to have been introduced with the ore-forming fluids. Iron, manganese, chromium, and nickel were increased in dolo-stone lithologies when compared to limestone lithologies. The uniform distribution of cobalt suggests this element was neither increased nor decreased during ore emplacement nor during dolomitization of the rocks. Zinc increases adjacent to ore result from leakages into open spaces rather than as pervasive aureoles surrounding ore bodies.

PRODUCTION of cesium, cesium salts, and rubidium salts in the United States declined somewhat from 1961 levels; rubidium production was virtually unchanged. Imports of pollucite declined because consumption was supplied partially out of inventory. Domestic Production.-About 50 tons of pollucite was reported mined at the Tin Mountain mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa., produced a total of 159 pounds of cesium. Rubidium production remained essentially the same as in 1961. Shipments of the two metals by these companies and by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., totaled 279 pounds. Production of cesium and rubidium salts by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., declined substantially during 1962.

The unique and irregulator distribution of working places in a mine always poses the two questions: - which and how much production equipment is to be used, - what production can be expected. Since the development of analytical methods would be impractical for such cases, a lot of computer programs has emerged in recent years trying to simulate the productiom process and thus find the best answer. The usege of a simulator has its dark side well felt by the author(s) of such a program: the credibility and the confidence of the customer. Using the simulator means to respect and to incorporate all the restrictions imposed by the narow underground space, methods of production, safety regulations etc., which can turn out to become a major programming effort. If the program is not properly structured, it will be used for a single special' case only, and never again. In this paper the structure and internal mechanism of the simulator is described for which the author believes that can easily be adapted to conditions of various underground and open pit mines. MINSIM tries to reach the following rather ambitious goals: 1) Estimation of the production before opening the mine, or a part of the mine. 2) Training the personnel to make decisions. 3) Making the daily time schedules for the entire fleet of the equipment units.

The need to apply the latest available technology to develop better tools and methods to meet problems in the mining industry was recognized by six of Canada's leading mining companies. As a result, MIROC (Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada) was chartered to identify problem areas in Canadian mining and to have research carried out to develop the tools and equipment to meet these perceived needs. The initial activity of MIROC has been in the environmental field, with improved clothing and protective devices being developed by contractors. Work clothing for miners is now being field tested. Respiratory protection and a new personal light source combined in a new "space-age" helmet are about to be issued for testing. Further developmental work is being carried on to offer these units and probably other personal protective devices on an individual basis as well as in a combined package.

A progress report of an experimental investigation into the role of clay in reservoir performance is presented. The Paper gives some of the reasons for considering clay as a significant component and outlines the objectives of a broad field of stud) which it is intended to pursue. Descriptions of the analytical methods used are given; these include X-ray diffraction. elec tron miscroscopy, thin section petrography, infrared spec-troscopy, and cation exchange analysis. A suite of the more important clay minerals has been assembled and characterized l~y these methods for use as standards in core analysis. From the data obtained it appears that although no one method of analysis is diagnostic for all of the clay minerals the infrared technique shows considerable promise in this direction. For the present, one or more supplementary methods should be used to confirm the clay mineral identifications. The methods of analysis are applied to field cores taken from repesentative and widely differing strata especially as regards their susceptibility to damage by fresh water. well.; completed in the stevens and Gatchell zones in San Joaquin valley are I,articularly clear-cut examples of this behavior with stevens zone wells being more adversely affected by fresh water. cores from these zones have been studied and are discussed. It appears that differences in this behavior can be ascribed to differences in the nature of the contained clays. The value of the infrarecl spectra of the clay fractions in establishing the identity of the predominant clay minerals is given particular emphasis. INTRODUCTION It is a challenge to the technical resources of the petroleum industry that when the economic limit of production is reached, from 40 to 70 per cent of the oil in California reservoirs remains unproduced even by use of the best presently known methods of recovery. The magnitude of this abandoned volume of oil can be appreciated when it is considered that to 1950 in excess of 8 billion bbll has been produced from California reservoirs with estimated economically recoverable reserves in known fields and pools totaling nearly 4 billion bbl.24 If for every barrel of oil produced there is at least another barrel still in place, it is evident that the revenue obtained from the recovery of only a .few per cent of this volume would repay the cost of the required research manyfold. From well completion experience. production behavior, and a growing body of laboratory data it now appears certain that the mineral composition of a producing stratum has an important bearing on the productivity and ultimate yield. In addition to the organic component and water, the cores con,ist of gravel, sand. silt, and clay" in diverse variety of (a, composition and (b) texture. It is the composite effect of these two factors which is probably responsible in large measure for the way in which the oil flows to the well. The role of the clay and fine-size accessory minerals is not clear but there is a growing opinion, based on their physical and chemical properties, that it is a significant one. of particular importance are the prime facts: 1. The silt and clay fractions of the reservoir matrix possess the highest surface area per gram, and 2. The silt and especially the clay fractions are the most chemically reactive of the inorganic constituents present. Only within the last few years has the knowledge of clay mineralogy and the techniques of identifying the clay minerals reached such a stage as to enable reliable inquiry into the composition of argillaceous sediments.2,8,10,11,12,16,26 It is the purpox of this and succeeding papers to add to the fund of information on the role which these materials play in the production of petroleum from California formations by correlating their presence and associated properties with observed reservoir behavior. In the present paper attention is directed to their possible influence on damage by fresh water. OBJECTIVES The attack on this problem divides naturally into two broad phases: 1. S. F. EMMONS RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP. The movement was started by a number of the friends and admirers of the late S. F. Emmons, Economic Geologist of the United States Geological Survey, to perpetuate his name through a fellowship to be known as the " S. F. Emmons Research Fellowship," and they have succeeded in raising some $13,000 for the purpose of carrying on research work in economic geology. The Committee in charge of this Memorial Fund has succeeded in obtaining the co-operation of Professors Kemp, of Columbia, Irving, of Yale, and Lindgren, of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the administration of this fellowship. These three gentlemen are respectively geologists of the institutions mentioned and are exceptionally qualified to determine in what direction the fund can be best administered. The Misima gold mine, located on Misima Island within the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea, was operated by Misima Mines Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Placer Dome Asia Pacific Limited (Placer), between 1988 and 2004. During this period, the mine produced 3.7 Moz of gold and 22.2 Moz of silver. In June 2012, the Special Mining Lease for the property was surrendered and incorporated into an Exploration Licence (EL). WCB Resources Ltd (WCB) entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Pan Pacific Copper covering this EL.In June 2013, WCB published a new mineral resource of the Umuna deposit at Misima. All the drill hole data used for estimation was historical data collected by the previous owners of the Misima mine between 1977 and 2001. No new drilling was carried out by WCB. Confidence that the data could be relied on was provided by detailed interrogation of the existing data, reconciliation of the new resource model against production data and significant input from individuals who had previously been involved with the data collection, resource estimation and production activities of the Misima mine during its operation.This extended abstract will consider the challenges associated with locating, retrieving and validating historical data to use as inputs to produce an updated Mineral Resource estimate and comment on the material value of appropriate data storage, documentation and record keeping through the life of a project. It will also comment on the value of WCB obtaining access to the intellectual knowledge of many professionals that were former employees of Placer. The Tripoli deposits in the southwest corner of Missouri In Newton County and the northeast corner of Oklahoma in Ottawa County, located in the vicinity of Seneca, Missouri, contains an unusual and peculiar form of silica which has not been found any other place in the world. Its outstanding characteristic is the physical structure of the individual particle, The particle structure of the Missouri-Oklahoma type Tripoli accounts for its market. It is a soft, friable, porous, double-refracting silica of the chalcedony variety, The particle is porous, has a fibrous structure, no sharp edges or comers, ad an average size of less than .01 millimeter, It varies from 90 to 98 per cent Si02 with less than 1 per cent free silica in the form of quartz, 24; has ignition loss of 1 per cent and fractional percentages of iron, alumina, lime, etc.

The Missouri River Intake Screen Structure and Tunnel (MRISST) is one phase of the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP), a vital piece of infrastructure in the state of North Dakota to transport water to drought-laden communities in the eastern half of the state. The scope of work consists of constructing a cofferdam in the Missouri River, mining a 1,600-foot by 74-inch tunnel from a secant pile shaft near the riverbank into a cofferdam, and erecting a 40-foot Y-shaped vertical pipe structure in the cofferdam to support the intake screens. Construction personnel worked in the river through the North Dakota winter to construct the cofferdam and contended with high hydrostatic pressures and raveling sands, gravels, cobbles and boulders while mining the tunnel. Diligent planning and meticulous execution were essential to overcoming the challenges encountered below the Missouri River.

Online education is not new. During the last decade, it has reached the stage where many universities offer a variety of courses, degrees and programs without any associated residency requirements. The most successful of the online universities, University of Phoenix, offers hundreds of accredited programs for close to 100,000 students throughout the world (www.phoenix.edu). Online education is considered to be a valid equivalent to traditional, classroom-based education. It is best suited to the needs of mature students with full-time jobs and a desire to deepen their knowledge. While most of the e-business has experienced severe setbacks during the last two years, e-education shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, the number of students and institutions offering online education keeps growing. The value of e-education associated expenditures was expected to reach $300 billion in 2001 (Sanoff,2001), making it a serious and mature industry.
