Phelps Dodge, Inc. (PD) is currently developing a lateritic nicke/Vcobalt deposit in Madagascar. Hazen Research, Inc. provides technical assistance to PD to investigate recovery processes for nickel and cobalt. Various process options were evaluated in laboratory experiments and pilot plant operations. The process selected for the feasibility study consists of feed preparation, high-pressure acid leach, countercurrent decantation wash, sulfide precipitation, sulfide dissolution, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and electrowinning. Among these unit processes, high-pressure acid leach, sulfide precipitation, and sulfide dissolution are applications of pressure technologies. Process development work and design criteria for commercial operations of these unit processes are presented in this paper. Concerns related to scaling in the high-pressure acid leach and the sulfide precipitation processes are discussed. Corrosion of various metal coupons under these environments was examined.

"Smelting furnace bricks contain significant quantity of base metals trapped in refractory material. A series of flotation tests were carried out on samples of old bricks from Sudbury area to examine upgrading behaviour for recycling purposes. Depending on the grind size used nickel recoveries varied from 60 to 90.6% with corresponding grades of 20% and 14.7%Ni. There is a trade-off between nickel and copper. The nickel has responded well to fine grinding, however, the copper recovery suffered from it. Mineralogical characteristics and flotation behaviour of the brick material are discussed in reference to those from the primary ore. INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is well recognized as a mature technology not only for the mining industry, but also for the environmental industry for the purpose of remediation and recycling. Materials available for recycling are usually the products of many years ago. There are multiple stake holders in this area. In general, when the processing results in a product that can be reused or sold, the company carrying out the remediation makes a profit, while the regulators and the public are pleased due to a cleaner environment. From these points of view, there have been many papers published over the years on various mineral processing techniques applied to separation of many different materials including from mining and metallurgical industries (Wilson et al., 1994; Tsunekawa et al., 2005; Saikia et al., 2012).Flotation may be viewed as the backbone of the mining and metallurgical industry since its invention for separation of solids from one another almost a century ago. It is capable of recovering a variety of finely divided different solids following their liberation from each other. Its versatility and highly competitive nature in terms of cost per tonne of material processed, accounts for its occasional uses in the environment engineering area. In the mining industry, flotation is the standard method used for the sulphide ores. It can be applied as a bulk flotation and/or differential flotation. Bulk flotation, which refers to co-flotation of several components from their source, is most suitable for environmental cleanup objectives. Desulphurisation of various plant tailings is a typical example of this (Benzazzoua et al., 2000)."

THE relative importance of things is a fascinating subject for thought. As we look about us we realize the Creator of all things has provided the metals for our use, each in the quantity needed-iron in vast quantities gold in small quantities. Had gold been given us in the quantities of iron, the mechanical age mould Eave been very different. You may find some pleasure in running over in your mind this question of the quantity available of an element and man's need of it in the scheme of things. Nickel in this sense is a middle group element. It was not essential to man's early development. Its usefulness dates back only about one hundred years. The quantity available to man has increased as his needs in- creased. On two occasions more nickel became available than was needed and on both of these occasions the ex- cess was soon absorbed by new and useful developments.

THE manufacture of nickel-clad steel plate and the fabrication of articles from it has progressed far enough to permit a general description of the working methods used. The manufacture of sheets made up of layers of nickel and steel is not new as a sheet of this character was patented in Germany in 1893. Present development differs mainly in the size and finish of the product. The earlier light-gage highly finished products have been limited in their application due to their similarity, in certain respects, to electro-plated and highly finished alloy sheets. The new product is a relatively heavy plate 1/4 or 3/s in. thick and heavier, with one side coated with nickel, the weight of nickel being of the order of 10 per cent of the whole. The finish is that of hot-rolled steel plate.

"THE TOWN OF HEDLEY is in the valley of the Similkameen River, about 200 miles east of Vancouver and 25 miles north of the International Boundary between British Columbia and the State of Washington. The main ore deposits are located on Nickel Plate Mountain, northeast of the town.The outcrop of the Nickel Plate system of orebodies is at an elevation of 5,900 feet. It was discovered in 1898 by prospectors and sold in the following year to the Marcus Daly interests of Butte, Montana. Production commenced in 1904 under the name of Daly Reduction Company. In 1909 control passed into the hands of the Hedley Gold Mining Company. Operation of the mine continued until 1930, when exhaustion of known ore reserves forced it to close. Upon the recommendation of Paul Billingsley (3) the mine was optioned by the 1. W. Mercer Exploration Company in 1932. Production began once more in 1934 under the name of Kelowna Exploration Company Limited, and was practically continuous until August 1955, when the mine was again shut down. The name of the latter company was changed in 1951 to Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited.The Mascot Fraction, a small wedge-shaped claim lying astride the Nickel Plate orebodies, was mined by Hedley Mascot Gold Mines Limited between 1935 and 1949. The geological setting and structural control of ore are essentially the same as in the adjoining Nickel Plate Mine.Total production from all operations on Nickel Plate Mountain to the end of 1954 was approximately 3,800,000 tons of gold ore, with a gross value in excess of $48,000,000.General GeologyNickel Plate Mountain occupies the gentle westerly dipping limb of an asymmetrical anticline, the axis of which trends northeasterly. The rocks are composed of a thick pile of Triassic limestone, limy argillite, and quartzite, -resting on a flattish floor of granodiorite near the base of the mountain. Associated with these sediments is a host of porphyritic sills and dykes of gabbro-diorite composition. In the mine area east-west brown soda-rhyolite dykes and north-south black andesite dykes crosscut all the other formations and the ore, probably following steep later fractures."

The Lick Fork prospect shows appreciable nickel sulphide mineralization in a narrow, steeply dipping, layered sequence of metamorphosed hornblende peridotite, gahhro and hornblende gahhro, intrusive into the Pedlar Formation (charnockitic pyroxene granulite) of the Virginia Blue Ridge Complex (Precambrian). Rocks of the intrusion have equilibrated to granulite- facies metamorphism, as indicated by pervasive polygonal texture of silicate aggregates, development of biotite- and hornblende-preferred orientation, compositional equilibration of the silicate minerals, the Mg-Fe2+ (orthopyroxene-dino- pvroxene) distribution coefficients (average 0.57), (MgO + FeO + Fe20 3)/Al20 3ratios in orthopyroxenes, and Ti contents and AI(i\)/A I(\i) ratios of hornblendes. The sulphides, consisting of pyrrhotite-pentlandite (with up to 4 wt% Co)-chalcopyrite-pyrite-marcasite-violarite- bornite—mackinawite, are virtually restricted to the ultramafic unit of the intrusion and constitute 20-30% of the samples of hornblende peridotite studied. Although the basal accumulation of the sulphides may suggest magmatic segregation, sulphide- silicate textures typical of sulphide liquid immiscibilitv are not present, even in the sparsely mineralized gahbro units. On the other hand, the transgressive and relict textures are strongly suggestive of replacement of the silicate minerals by sulphides. These include chaleopyrite ± pyrrhotite ± pentlandite (violarite) ± pyrite ±magnetite veins crosscutting silicates, sulphide penetration into silicates at silicate-sulphide contact zones, rounding of silicate grains against sulphide matrix, and islands of silicate minerals (olivine, hornblende, pyroxene, biotite) in sulphide masses. Metamorphic mobilization of pre-existing sul­ phides is a possibility, but involvement of post-metamorphic, hydrothermal fluids is suggested by the following features: paucity of annealing and deformation textures in the sulphides, replacement of metamorphic and deformed silicates, lack of differential sulphide mobilization and the common occurrence of sulphides along grain boundaries and triple junctions of poly gonal silicate aggregates. The consistent association between sulphides and hydrothermal alteration products of silicates suggests that they are cogenetic. The hydrothermal fluids may have merely mobilized and concentrated the pre-existing, disseminated, magmatic sulphides, or there may have been significant addition of sulphides during this process. This question cannot be resolved unequivocally with the existing data.

The objective of this work was to prove repeated loading capacities and investigate the selectivity of physically stabilized algal biomass from Spirulina platensis and Chlorella sp. for the removal and recovery of cobalt, nickel and chromium from laterite heap leach liquors. The testwork was carried out on a bench scale in small glass columns and proved that it was possible to immobilize the biomass on the highly porous surface of pumice stone (kissiris). Nickel and cobalt could be removed from pure aqueous solutions of each metal by the immobilized cyanobacterial biomass. Nickel and also cobalt biosorption was sensitive to the initial solution pH. Cobalt recoveries up to 80% were achieved after 5 loading cycles, from low concentration solutions, at pH 6.0. Nickel removal was complete under the same conditions, whereas chromium sorption was ineffective. Desorption of the metal loaded columns was effected by dilute sulfuric acid. The algal species giving the best adsorption capacities for the metals under consideration was selected for further experimental work with real laterite heap leach solution produced by column leaching. A statistical analysis of all obtained results was conducted using the fraction of metal removed as response. The ratio "mass of metal removed to mass of protein contained in the immobilized cells" was determined as well. The described method might be applicable for recovery of cobalt and nickel from diluted laterite heap leach solutions, such as heap wash waters, or for their removal from waste streams of a hydrometallurgical extraction process.

NICKEL-BEARING alloys are associated with petroleum in the fields of exploration, production, and refining. In the first- named field the geologist of today makes use of such instruments as the seismograph, torsion balance, and magnetometer, the selection of proper alloys and metals for the manufacture of which is an important matter. Nickel-bearing alloys are useful for parts that require resistance to corrosion or that must have non-magnetic properties. Where special co- efficient of thermal expansion are de- sired, they are obtained by using alloys high in nickel (20 to 60 per cent), since, by varying the nickel contents, alloys can be obtained ranging fro111 "Invar", with a low expansion between -40 and 175 cleg. F., to those with coefficients of expansion exceeding that of steels. The latter are obtained by additions of chromiurn to the alloys. Alloys containing 50 to 80 per cent of nickel, which possess high magnetic permeability, find application in certain instruments where this property is important.

A process utilizing ozone for the precipitation of cobalt from nickel sulphate liquors containing ammonium sulphate has been developed. Best results were obtained using nickel carbonate to maintain solution pH at 5.0 to 5.5. Work was performed both in column and stirred-tank reactors. Variables studied included neutralizer type and concentration, NH4+ concentration, temperature, Ni++ and Co++ concentration, per cent O3 in the O2 carrier gas, O3 input rate and agitation. The over-all rate of cobalt rejection increased sharply with increasing agitation and ozone concentration in the gas phase, reflecting relatively slow transfer of ozone from the gas to the liquid phase.

The success of future electric vehicles will depend greatly upon the power supply choices made today. Research is presently being conducted by automotive engineers and electrochemists to determine what battery type may be the most promising. Not only are product production and application efficiencies being evaluated but also environmental concerns of reclamation and recycling. Rechargeable batteries using nickel-metal hydride electrodes are strong candidates for these electric vehicle applications. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating hydrometallurgical technology that separates and recovers purified metallic components present in nickel-metal hydride battery scrap. Sulfuric, hydrochloric, and nitric acids are all capable of dissolving the battery electrode alloys given the proper operating conditions. Solvent extraction of the leach solutions using D2EHPA removes iron, and selective precipitation shows promise of recovering the other metals in the H2SO4 and HNO, systems.

The prominence of her mineral resources makes Canada a most fitting place in which to hold the Second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress, since in all probability the Dominion has more diversified mineral wealth than any other part of the British Empire. This paper is concerned with nickel, an important factor of Canada's mineral production. The richness and quantity of her nickel ores have made Canada the world's most important source of supply of the metal. Its history and diversified uses are, therefore, particularly interesting at this meeting. Meteorites were perhaps the first metal known to man. The falling star, sought out with fear overborne by curiosity, was found to be a better stone than the earth-given, truly a boon from the gods. Archeologists tell us there is good evidence that the ancient oriental peoples learned at an early date to make these stones into useful implements. The invincible blades of the great warriors of old in China, Persia, and in northern Europe, were Heaven-sent, a fable which sounds significant of meteoric iron. Probably some of the ancient swords of Khorassan and of Damascus were of meteoric nickel-bearing iron (1). Fifty centuries were to pass before men learned to isolate nickel and add it to iron to produce the same alloy for much the same purpose. Meanwhile, man had found another natural alloy of nickel, known first to the Chinese as paktong, or 'white copper.' It was obtained from complex copper-nickel sulphide ores of Yunnan in southern China. This metal was brought by caravan through India into Bactria, a country north of the Hindu-Kush mountains, in what is now known as Russian Turkestan. The earliest specimen extant is a Bactrian coin attributed to 235 B.C. The rough reddish-white metal was also sent in the form of triangular rings to Canton, where zinc ores were added and the whole smelted to a more malleable alloy, also known later as paktong. This alloy was the forerunner of German-or nickel-silver. Specimens of this alloy, wrought into ornamental candlesticks and boxes, were brought from Canton to Europe by the East India Company in the early days of the China trade. Paktong was highly prized for its beauty as well as its eastern origin in far-away China. By 1760 the unwrought metal was imported into England for domestic manufacture.

The production of nickel coated mica composite powder by hydrogen reduction of a nickel ammine sulphate solution, followed by the production of molded plastic samples containing Ni/Mica is described. Sample preparation by injection or compression molding is outlined and the better results in compression molding are explained by the combination of better particle-to-particle contact, less particle breakage during processing, and more random particle distribution in the plastic. Three volume resistivity measurement techniques are described and compared. Two of them (conductive paint and silver-rubber electrodes) are found reliable and are used throughout the work. The influence of nickel content and particle size of Ni/Mica on volume resistivity is evaluated and the optimum product defined. One of the most important assets of Ni/Mica, its ease of injection molding, is demonstrated by the good electrical properties obtained with little optimization of the injection molding process. Surface roughness of molded plastics with and without Ni/Mica is briefly discussed. Shielding effectiveness of Ni/Mica in four plastics (PP, ABS, PBT and PC) is presented and correlated to volume resistivity data for the same materials. The addition of 15 to 50 weight % Ni/Mica (3 to 16 volume %) to plastics and subsequent injection or compression molding produces composite materials having low volume resistivities (0.03 to 1 ohm.cm) and high shielding effectiveness (40 to 70 dB).

Mineral Industries education as an entity, again and again has sought recognition, always to be turned aside or ignored.1 The incident mentioned in Lost Chapter was only the first of a series of disappointments. The Land-Grant Act is camouflaged here and there in the name of progressive education. A new interpretation may be in the best interests of society in so far as the goose is not killed that lays the golden egg. The primary objective of the act is still "agriculture and mechanic arts" but mechanic arts is not alone mechanical arts or engineering. Mechanic arts was used in a broad sense as a symbol of creative effort in locating and winning the fundamentals of existence - plants, animals, and minerals - from Mother Earth, their primary processing and treatment into foodstuffs and raw materials of industry, their manufacture into useful articles of commerce, and, last, their distribution and utilization. Significantly the great agricultural industry is now at least half mechanic arts. The Association of Land-Grant Colleges and Universities has neglected the mineral kingdom shamefully. The Association embraces Divisions of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Home Economics, and Veterinary Medicine but has no division relating to the mineral industries.

Years before iron and steel works were established at Sydney, several thriving although short-lived iron works operated in Nova Scotia. These furnaces reflected the general nineteenth-century North American experience with iron works. At the beginning of the century, small furnaces struggled to supply local needs. Charcoal was the principal fuel and water powered most furnace equipment. By the end of the century, a few huge primary iron and steel works dominated production for Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada. Two sites achieved prominence in the nineteenthcentury Nova Scotia iron industry: Londonderry and Ferrona (Fig. 1). Londonderry, the larger and longerlasting of the two sites, is today a small village on the south flank of the Cobequid Mountains, about 30 km west of Truro. Prior to the establishment of an iron works in 1849, no community existed. At the peak of operation in the 1880s, however, over 2600 people were located there. The second site, Ferrona, today is a mere crossroads on the map, about 10 km south of New Glasgow. Following the construction of a blast furnace there in 1892, a small village grew up around the furnace. But once the furnace was blown out in 1904, the population gradually drifted away.

W. R. Lawrie (Member): As all the Institute members present are aware, the Ninth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress was held in Great Britain from 3rd to 24th May, 1969. The Congress opened in London and the first week was devoted to technical sessions. Several receptions and other forms of entertainment were held in the evenings. The Congress was attended by some 1 200 delegates, many of whom were accompanied by their wives. As can be imagined a large organisation was needed to cater for all the whims of these delegates, to arrange accommodation and to provide transport for the technical trips, for the receptions and for the sight-seeing tours. Papers presented at the technical sessions proved of great interest. It was stimulating to hear of the developments taking place in the various branches of mining and metallurgy. The discussions which developed between men from so many different countries were thought provoking, led to new friendships and most of us made valuable contacts for the future. There were 141 papers presented in the one week. They were given in four separate halls with two, three and sometimes four papers coming up for discussion in each of the three sessions per day in each hall. Among the more interesting subjects were those concerning off-shore drilling and the facilities for production of petroleum and natural gas. Beach mining at Consolidated Diamond Mines drew a large audience. Automation, mechanization and other technical developments were well described and we were brought up to date with modern techniques of mineral prospecting. There was general discussion on the future of the mineral industries together with comments on the consumption and price trends of these metals and minerals. The future of uranium, of vital interest to us in South Africa, came in for much debate. During the first week, besides attending the technical sessions and seeing some of the sights of London, we were royally entertained. There was a banquet, attended by some I 400 people, where we were welcomed by Princess Alexandra, a reception by H.M. Government in the Banqueting House, and we were entertained at the House of Lords on a terrace overlooking the bustling and rather muddy river Thames. Then there was the visit to the Glyndebourne Opera. It is only in London that at 3 o'clock of an afternoon, nearly 1 000 people all togged up in dress suits and long dresses and carrying packets of sandwiches for supper could arrive at a station to catch a train, and not even cause a stir of interest or a raised eyebrow! This is the way we travelled 60 miles to the opera from London. Surely there can be no more picturesque or romantic a setting for an opera than this large 400-year old red brick manor house nestling in the green valleys of the unspoilt Sussex countryside. It was a glorious evening and though we returned somewhat late and tired, not one of us would have missed this experience. After the first week in London there was a choice of tours of one week to London and the Home Counties, Cornwall, a Geological tour to Scotland, South Wales, and North England. These were followed by further one week tours to Yorkshire and Lancashire, Scotland, West Country and Midlands, a Geological tour of Wales, and a Mining and Geological tour to Jurassic Iron Mines. We then returned to London for the final session and closing banquet. Post-congress tours were arranged to Europe and to Ireland. It was a wonderful Congress, a great experience, we made many friends and may there be many more congresses! . L. W. P. van den Bosch (Member): Much has already been said in appreciation of the excellent organisation and arrangements made for the delegates who attended this Congress. This report is confined to a brief discussion of the personal impressions gained from the papers presented and the technical visits attended. The papers covered a wide variety of subjects ranging from highly theoretical observations to practical descriptions of operations. There were three main themes, VIZ: 1. The attention given to research and its forceful application to practical operation. 2. A steady development in mechanization and automation leading to savings in manpower. 3. Improvization, modernization and adaptation of exisitng facilities. Thoughts on these themes can best be illustrated by comments on some of the industries visited. COAL The National Coal Board (N.C.B.) has been most progressive and all of us have heard of the Bevercotes Colliery with its completely automatic mining and coal handling equipment. This was not, unfortunately, on show but there is no doubt that this is one of the greatest advances in coal mining leading towards continuous production. Coal in Britain is fighting for its life against oil, North Sea gas, imported gases and nuclear power. Output is dropping, the less efficient collieries are closing down and efficiencies are steadily rising as the following tabulation indicates: In 1931: 1 million men produced 300 million tons of coal In 1947: 0.7 million men produced 230 million tons of coal In 1968: 0.4 million men produced 160 million tons of coal

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 (PL 109-236, 2006) established the Office of Mine Safety and Health, functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued more than 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by the United States Congress through two emergency supplemental appropriations and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation. Ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website (www.cdc.gov/niosh/ mining/researchprogram/contracts/index.html) and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously (Snyder et al., 2016).External contracts are broadly classified by the following areas:• Communications and tracking.• Emergency response.o Self-escape and breathing air supply.o Refuge alternatives.o Escape and rescue.• Equipment safety.• Fires and explosions.• Ground control.• Mine environmental systems (mine ventilation and atmospheric monitoring).• Worker/workplace health and safety.Contracts are issued under a request for proposal (RFP), through a broad agency announcement (BAA) or under an interagency agreement (IAA). An RFP solicitation includes a specific problem description and a well-defined scope of work to guide the offeror in preparing a bid to conduct the research. "The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 established the Office of Mine Safety and Health (OMSH) within NIOSH and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. Subsequently, Congress provided additional funding to NIOSH to initiate and continue the program. OMSHR has fulfilled this Congressional mandate through annual Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) solicitations, directed Requests for Proposals (RFP) and Inter-Agency Agreements (IAA), and has further expanded the program through capacity building BAA contracts with U.S. university mining departments in the areas of mine ventilation and ground control. This paper describes the extramural funding program and broadly examines the results of the 150+ contracts issued to date, grouped into key focus areas. INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 20061 established the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research or OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued over 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by Congress through two Emergency Supplemental Appropriations (ESA) and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation; ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website2 and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously.3"

Following the first longwall excavation at a deep-cover gas well site, the pre-mining modeling prediction of longwallinduced casing deformations in the fully cemented production casing were in excellent agreement with post-mining Caliper survey results. However, after second panel mining, the post-mining Caliper survey revealed a large plastic deformation near the top of the Pittsburgh Seam. The focus of this paper is to identify the possible cause of such an anomalous deformation. Very high longwall-induced casing stress near a thick claystone layer at 23 feet above the Pittsburgh seam horizon was identified as the primary cause. Leaving the production casing uncemented or using softer cementing material between intermediate and production casings is identified as the best practice.
