Considerable interest has arisen in developing analytical methods suitable for measuring resource commodity substitution patterns. some of this work has applied the Translog method to estimate actual elasticities of substitution. Recent examples incl.uae Privolos and Dunietz (1987), Kopp and Smith (1983), and Moroney and Trapani (1983). Another method, one which has received attention earlier in the work of Fisher and Pry (1970), is that of the logistic or diffusion function. We believe that the latter method has properties suitable for analyzing current problems of material substitution. The present study thus evaluates this method in its original logistic form as well as an extended version incorporating additional explanatory influences. The analysis is applied to copper/aluminum substitution and iron ore beneficiation. Substitution for copper by aluminum is examined in the building wire and cable, and magnet wire end-use markets. For iron ore, the substitution of pellets for sinter is considered for the U. S. market.

Face ignitions occurring during longwall mining are increasing each year and are expected to continue to increase as deeper and gassier seams are mined. Effective methane monitoring strategies are needed to supplement techniques developed either to control the ignition sources or to dilute the gas to an acceptable concentration. Present monitoring strategies do not always detect dangerous concentrations as rapidly as they should. In a number of instances, dangerous concentrations have been observed at the shearer, but are diluted to acceptable levels when measured at the tailgate monitoring location. To effectively monitor and control methane concentrations, methane liberation and emission patterns must be identified. This need has led to a joint research effort between the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology and the United States Bureau of Mines. By combining the knowledge and experience of both organizations, the methane hazard facing underground longwall operations can be addressed more effectively. A comprehensive plan was developed to monitor methane levels throughout the panel and for an entire longwall mining cycle. In June-July 1986, a case study was performed at the Cape Breton Development Corporation's Lingan colliery in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This initial study was performed on two advancing longwall panels. Methane concentrations and flow patterns from this study are described in this report. A similar study is planned on a retreating longwall panel.

Problem: Mining in the United States remains one of the most hazardous industries, despite significant reductions in fatal injury rates over the last century. Coal mine fatality rates, for example, have dropped almost a thousand fold since their peak in 1908. While incidence rates are very important indicators, lost worktime measures offer an alternative metric for evaluating job safety and health performance. The first objective of this study examined the distributions and summary statistics of all injuries reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration from 1983 through 2004. Over the period studied (1983 2004), there were 31,515,368 lost workdays associated with mining injuries, for an equivalent of 5,700 person years lost annually. The second objective addressed the problem of comparing safety program performance in mines for situations where denominator data were lacking. By examining the consequences of injuries, comparisons can be made between disparate operations without the need for denominators. Total risk in the form of lost workday sums can help to distinguish between lower and higher risk operations or time periods. Method: Our method was to use a beta distribution to model the losses and to compare underground coal mining to underground metal/nonmetal mining from 2000 to 2004. Results: Our results showed the probability of an injury having 10 or more lost workdays was 0.52 for coal mine cases versus 0.35 for metal/nonmetal mine cases. In addition, a comparison of injuries involving continuous mining machines over 2001 2002 versus 2003 2004 showed that the ratio of average losses in the later period to those in the earlier period was approximately 1.08, suggesting increasing risks for such operations. Discussion: This denominator free safety measure will help the mining industry more effectively identify higher risk operations and more realistically evaluate their safety improvement programs. Impact on Industry: Attention to a variety of metrics concerning the performance of a job safety and health program will enhance industry's ability to manage these programs and reduce risk.

Mining geologists utilise many technologies to map, sample, measure, model and plan before and during the mining process. Predicted ore quality rarely corresponds with feed quality determined by process operators. Objectively measuring conveyed material quality accurately in real time avoids disagreements over mined ore quality and generates opportunities to improve mill feed quality.This paper discusses the well proven PGNAA (prompt gamma neutron activation analysis) technology used in the GEOSCAN-M elemental analyser that is ideally suited to measuring composition of primary crushed conveyed material in real time. Representative, continuous, fully penetrative measurements are unaffected by particle size, belt speed, mineralogy, dust or layering on the conveyor. Material can be directed to processes or stockpiles by utilising measurement increments of typically one to five minutes and then activating diverters to direct increments to the correct location. Waste, low-grade or deleterious material can be rejected to waste dumps or stockpiled for later processing. Material meeting a product specification can bypass unnecessary processing. Paybacks in weeks have been achieved for such applications. Process operators are able to control the blend of ores fed into the mill to improve processing performance and use measurements for ore reconciliation and metal accounting. Utilising the technology to upgrade ore quality after mining and before processing is beneficial in improving plant economics.The technology has been successfully utilised in base metals, ferrous metals and industrial minerals. Mining geologists can determine ore quality being produced in real time and modify the ore quality prior to milling. Ore feed quality measurements are also used by process operators in optimising plant performance. The elemental content can help identify geometallurgical domains as well as other major changes in quality, which may affect processing. Until now there has been controversy about which tests should be performed to diagnose early Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). Initial screening questions, especially about tingling and numbness, routinely given to patients prior to examinations proved to be a very important tool in the diagnostic process1, 4. However, standardized tests that are simple, quick, valid and reliable are needed to support a diagnosis of HAVS. Purpose: To find the most valid and reliable tests to diagnose HAVS. Material and Methods Five major tests were performed on Group I and Group II. Group I: Control group of 12 volunteers including students, nurses, secretaries and physicians with no history of using vibrating tools (age 20 to 50y, mean age 38.5y; 5male, 5 female.) Group II: 12 workers (age 17 to 65y, mean age 39y; 9 male, 3 female) were sent by a local trade union with a history of using vibrating power tools on their jobs for varying amounts of time (mean 12.2y, from 0.5 to 35y.) Pre-enrollment survey showed that each had more than 4 complaints commonly associated with use of vibrating tools (including numbness, tingling, weakness, pain, finger color or nail changes, temperature change, and difficulty moving.) 1. Sensory nerve conductive tests: Amplitude and nerve conductive velocity (NCV) were evaluated. 2. Cold Stress-Temperature recovery time tests were done on the index finger of the dominant hand following these steps: Confirm water bath is within 4-5º C. Place the finger temperature probe on pad of the index finger of the dominant hand. Record temperature every 15 seconds. Place subject’s hand in the cold- water bath for exactly five minutes. Record temperature every 15 seconds for ten minutes. 3. Blood test: Venous blood was taken by a 21-gauge needle with the yellow collection tube adapter. S-ICAM, Sera Thrombomodulin, Norepinephrine levels were evaluated by Henderson Research Centre, Canada. 4. Finger Sensory Evaluation: Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test and 2-point discrimination tests were performed on bilateral fingers. 5. Digital blood pressure test: blood pressure was measured in bilateral index fingers. Results 1. Median nerve sensory conductive amplitude from palm to wrist : GI: mean 96 ± 31µm; GII: mean 43± 30µm; for dominant hands. GI vs GII: P<0.001

"Roof bolts are subjected to axial stresses, shear stresses, or both. Axial and shear stresses were compared between roof bolts machined with two and three slots. Shear stresses perpendicular to and at an angle to the shear planes were evaluated by analyzing a three-slot instrumented roof bolt, performing laboratory tests on two- and three-slot roof bolts, and conducting in-situ test analyses. Threeslot bolts appear to provide a complete bending strain profile, requiring no prior knowledge of the estimated shear-plane orientation. Minimum displacements occur in roof bolts installed perpendicular to rather than at an angle to the shear planes.RÉSUMÉ Les boulons d’ancrage dans le toit d’une mine sont sujets à des contraintes axiales, des contraintes de cisaillement ou les deux. On a comparé les contraintes axiales et de cisaillement de boulons d’ancrage usinés avec deux ou trois fentes. A 1991 survey of 48 mining companies, employing more than 24 000 employees, showed that disabling injury and disease rates continue to be the most common measurements of safety management effectivness in the Australian mining industry.Of the companies surveyed, 22 claimed to be making regular safety audits. Of these only two listed the improvement of audit scores among their goals for 1991.Influenced by loss control management thinking, some managers have expanded the scope of their safety programs to include all accidental operational losses adversely affecting mine profitability.Learning from their new experience with total quality management some managers are now recognising that successful safety management outcomes depend on the effective management of program inputs. They are thus turning away from measurements of accident consequences - the failures of the management system - to measurements of management control.The new focus of safety management attention is now on corrective actions before accidents happen.

With the advances in software speed and capability, many of us now are running multiple scenarios on entire models rather than just testing small areas or a few blocks. In the authors experience both the geological and geostatistical academic theory and our rules of thumb, often prove un-useable or incorrect in the real world we work in. The only way to truly validate and tune our models is to complete the entire model and ‘see if it works’. If it lacks some property we were expecting, then we need to find out why and/or run different scenarios to see what changes. This is not always possible with tight project timelines but we find ourselves doing more and more of this sort of thing, and in so doing, understand that every deposit is different and requires its own ‘rules’ to get valid and useful results. For the purposes of this paper, this process is termed Empirical Geostatistics. Take Clayton Deutsch’s ‘all realisations all of the time’ concept a step back. Before you even think of simulating, test the alternate realisations generated by alternate parameters such as different domaining, varying search neighbourhood parameters etc.

AN improved method of measuring the surface area of a comminution product down to any desired particle size has been developed. The method is largely graphical, and requires relatively little calculation. It can be used with materials containing large amounts of clay, or excess fines of any kind. The surface area S is expressed in terms of square meters per 100 c.c. of solids. This expression is based upon volume rather than weight, and is considered to be more suitable for crushing and grinding problems, where the machines ordinarily are operated under constant volume conditions. It has the advantage that surface areas of different materials can be compared directly, even though their specific gravities may be unknown. The "specific surface" of a material, or the number of square centimeters of surface area per gram, is equal to 100S divided by the specific gravity. Particle diameters are expressed in microns, K being the diameter of the largest particle present and L the grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding. The value of K does not always coincide exactly with the diameters of the largest particles retained on the coarsest testing sieve, since the largest particles formed in crushing and grinding are often slabby, or have other irregular shapes. L has been chosen as 0.700 microns, or number 27.5 in the size number series, for reasons to be explained later. S is the total surface area of all particles larger than L microns in diameter. When a homogeneous comminution product is separated into fractions whose diameters bear a constant geometrical relationship p to each other, and the log per cent weight retained upon each size and passing the next larger size is plotted against the log diameter, a straight line results, which is called the distribution line, and which has a slope in called the distribution modulus. The distribution line can be extended to any desired limiting size, and the total surface area of all particles larger than that size can be calculated. The equation of the distributi0n line is [w = Cx" [I]] where w is the per cent weight retained on each successive sieve; x is the particle diameter; and C is the per cent weight retained on an opening of unit diameter.2 Theoretically, the distribution line can be extended to include infinitely small particles. When it is so extended, and the assumption is made that no fine particles are present other than those accounted for by the equation; the log per cent cumulative weight passing any series of sizes, plotted against the log diameter passed, will result in a straight line lying parallel to and above the plotted distribution line.

Building aggregates, basic materials for the construction industry, must be produced according to socio-economic and environmental sustainability principles, i.e. the three fundamental components of Sustainable Development. On this subject, an introductory discussion about the interpretation of these concepts in the field of mineral production and construction industry is first presented. As for the socio-economic aspect, aggregates are then illustrated as being essential resources for the development of the society, underlying that it is possible to understand their fundamental socio-economic role only through the analysis of the whole product life cycle, from production to end use and beyond. The same has to be done on the environmental side to assess the environmental impacts of aggregates: one should look for, not in the quarry phase only, but also in all the downstream activities of the construction process, including the use phase and beyond. Based on this approach, in the second part of the paper, the results of some investigations focused on eco-profiles of building aggregates, gathered through the application of LCA methodology are presented and discussed. In such a context, strengths and weaknesses of LCA indicators will be discussed, as well.

"The Bayer process alumina production generates 0.7 to 2.0 ton of bauxite residue (BR) and an average of 1.0 ton of C02 per ton of alumina produced. The direct reaction of exhaust gases to reduce the alkalinity of the BR may allow a triple gain: improve the storage conditions, open a range of new applications for BR and sequester from 16 to 102 kg of C02 per ton of alumina. This paper shows the measurement of C02 captured during a pilot scale reaction of a suspension of BR in water with flue gas, produced from direct oil burning. Three different types of reactors were used: one spray tower and two packed columns. The inlet and exhaust gases were analyzed using electrochemical and non dispersive infrared sensors. The pH of the suspension was monitored during and after the reaction to evaluate the buffer effect.IntroductionAlumina is mainly produced from refining bauxite using the Bayer process. This process consists of extracting the aluminum oxide through its dissolution in caustic soda and the separation of insoluble residues. The remaining bauxite residue (BR) although not particularly toxic, poses risks to the environment due to the large volume and its reactivity. According to the latest technology it is stacked on sealed deposits specially constructed. To date the vast majority of the bauxite residue that has been produced was stored and were not incorporated into any existing production processes to significant amount with exception to some extent of the sintering process residue at Russia and China [l]. On the other hand, a strategic goal was set in 2010 by the Bauxite and Alumina Committee of the International Aluminium Institute (formed by the majority of the industries) to reuse 20% of BR in 2025 [2]. China has established the same objective for 2015[1].This paper is a sequel of two others presented at TMS 2010/2012 [3-4] and describes:• A pilot plant assembled for testing the carbonation process of BR with gaseous effluents similar of the refining process.• The methodology used to measure the amount of C02 captured during the carbonation process.• The results of the carbonation process, the C02 capture and the buffering effect of the pH.This process is studied in order to consume minimal power and use the effluent as efficiently as possible in different reactors from low cost to ultra high performance. The process is designed for minimizing the power consumption and equipment investment."

Measuring The Economic Viability Of Resource Projects (A Western Surface Coal Project) The bankers approach to the analysis of a new "green fields" mining project is similar but different from the approach that the pining company might take. The purpose of this paper shall be to discuss the techniques that are used by mining companies and bankers as they try to measure the economic viability of mining projects. The analysis of these new projects (by both the mining companies and the banker) is based on a projected revenue stream and not on historical earnings or past perfomance because these projects are start up situations with no history to look to. The starting point in the analysis of these projections is the choice of the assumptions to be used in preparing these projections. After the assumptions have been determined and the projections are prepared then the projections are submitted to various tests in order to determine whether the project measures up to previously agreed upon minimum standards. In order to illustrate the analytical procedures used in evaluating a mineral project the writer has constructed a hypothetical case involving the development of a western surface coal mine (Property). The basic data in connection with this hypothetical new project is described in the next section of this paper. After the Description of the Project is a section which shows the type of analysis that a mining company might prepare in order to approach a bank for a loan and the final section illustrates the type of analysis that a bank might prepare in evaluating this loan request. Description Of The Project or Basic Data In Connection With Undeveloped Western Surface Coal Property An independent mining/geological Consultant&apos;s report has been completed on the Property which confirms that the Property contains 175 million tons of economically recoverable coal subdivided into the following reserve categories in accordance with U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey definitions: Measured or Proven 90,000,000 Indicated or Probable 50,000,000 Inferred or Possible 35,000,000 The owners of the reserves have chosen to drill up those reserves that are nearest to the subcrop and have not spent as much time on those portions of the Property which are on the fringes of the deposit where the overburden is thicker because the stripping ratio and hence the operating costs and capital requirements are higher down dip. The proven reserves are based on an average thickness of 80 feet, of which a mining recovery of 90% is projected. The overburden thickness varies from 0&apos; to 280&apos; with an average thickness of 127&apos;. The overburden consists mainly of scoria, sandstone, gravel, shale and silty clay. 134 holes were cored (and analysis done on five foot increments) in the measured reserve on the following spacing: 100 foot centers to define the burn line; 1,320 foot centers to define the early mining areas; 2,640 foot centers to identify the later mining areas.

Classification devices provide a link between comminution and flotation. Basically, it determines which particles are diverted back for additional grinding and which ones pass to downstream flotation. Therefore, the classifiers play an important role in the performance of a mineral processing circuit. Hydrocyclones are the most common classifiers used in wet grinding, despite being associated with poor classification efficiency. Hydrocyclones are widely used due to advantages related to low maintenance as well as reduced capital and operating cost. Other classifiers, such as fine screens, have much better classification efficiency compared to hydrocyclones. The major challenge of using screens in an operation, however, is their large footprint and increased maintenance requirements relative to hydrocyclones. Some researchers have demonstrated that switching from hydrocyclones to screens, as the classifier device in a ball milling circuit, resulted in a 20 per cent increase in plant throughput and significant improvements in coarse particle recovery, resulting in a 6 per cent increase in overall flotation recovery. However, it is known that these benefits of improved classification are very much ore specific, ie depending on the ore response. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the benefits of improved classification in pilot scale testing before the plant could consider the potential classifier upgrade. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale grinding tests where the ore sample was processed using different classifiers: a traditional hydrocyclone and hybrid classification involving the use of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone followed by a screen. The size specific energy and circulating load were used to compare the performance of the grinding circuit. The grinding product was subject to mineral liberation analysis and the impact of classification efficiency on the mineral liberation is discussed in the paper.

"Even with the cyclic nature of mining, when it comes down to it, the bottom line is that whatever direction the commodity market is going there is always a desire to improve the economics of an operation in order to deliver a greater return to investors. Adapting to market pressures by introduction of an operational process change can often have a downstream impact. What may be less obvious is that reconciliation can play an important part in measuring the effectiveness of many operational changes. Through the adoption of best practice reconciliation and related comparisons, it is possible to measure the impact of changes across the mine value chain and identify variability that may have been introduced. Using analytical business improvement tools, examining and monitoring planned changes can be crucial in understanding whether the introduced changes have been effective and whether they have provided the expected result. "Electric and hydraulic shovels are the dominant loading machinery in surface mining operations. Despite their critical role in production and their high capital and operating costs, no reliable and comprehensive quantitative performance metric is available. In this paper, a stochastic shovel effectiveness (SSE) measure is proposed for the purpose of quantifying the performance effectiveness of these shovels. The SSE is based on the widely used method of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) in the manufacturing industry. The OEE measures the performance effectiveness of equipment by multiplying its mechanical availability, utilization and production quality. In manufacturing processes, quality rate is the ratio of the total number of products minus the number of defective products – equivalent to the number of acceptable products – to the total number of products. The SSE similarly uses the mechanical-availability and utilization terms, but instead of quality rate it uses a new parameter named bucket rate.The variability or randomness of the input data, that is, availability, utilization and bucket rate, are further incorporated into the SSE, and a final stochastic SSE distribution is derived in the form of a probability density function. One hydraulic and one electric shovel in a surface mining operation were selected to test the validity of the proposed method. The SSE scores for the two shovels, operating continuously for one year, were derived and compared. As with the OEE, the three-parameter SSE method yielded more representative results for overall performance measurement than a single-parameter approach. Using Monte Carlo simulation, a three-parameter Weibull and a normal distribution were derived for quantifying the overall effectiveness of hydraulic and electric shovels, respectively. As a decision aid, the proposed methodology promises to render a more informative tool than traditional metrics for mine equipment maintenance and management."

"A new method to determine the elastic modulus of a material using the atomic force microscope (AFM) has been proposed by Tang et al. (Nanotechnology 2008, 19, 495713). This method models the cantilever and the sample as two springs in a series. The ratio of the cantilever spring constant (k) to diameter of the tip (2a) is treated in the model as one parameter (a=k/2a). The value of a, along with the cantilever sensitivity, are determined on two reference samples with known mechanical properties and then used to find the elastic modulus of an unknown sample. To determine the reliability and accuracy of this technique it was tested on several polymers. Traditional depth-sensing nanoindentation was preformed for comparison. Using both methods, the elastic modulus of the polymers tested was calculated. The elastic modulus values from the AFM were within ±(5-20)% of the nanoindenter results.IntroductionThe atomic force microscope (AFM) has proven to be a useful tool for characterizing materials on the micro- to nano-scale. The most common use of AFM is to image and measure the topography of the sample surface, but AFM has also been used to characterize the mechanical properties of materials [1-3]. With AFM's ability to scan the sample surface, features of interest can be found and indented. It provides an advantage over traditional nanoindenters that use optical microscopes and thus cannot resolve nano-scale features. This makes AFM a useful tool for characterizing materials on the nano-scale."

Previous methods for measuring the flow of solids in Jnrdraulic conveying have not considered the important effects of slip velocity and particle concentration. In this paper an extension of the method proposed byShirato et al. (J. Chem. Engng. &apos;Japan, 1: 164-167) for determining mass flow in a vertical conduit is outlined.The present method consists of measuring&apos; the volumetric flow of the slurry (by a magnetic flow meter for instance) and the density of the slurry in two pipe sections of different diameters. Effects of variation of slip withparticle concentration, not previously considered, are allowed.Problems involved in estimating the density of a slurry from differential pressure measurement are discussed.The major problem is the uncertainties in estimating frictional losses due to the wall in two-phase flows. The greater reliability of a more &quot;direct&quot; technique, such as by &apos;Y-ray absorption, for measuring solid concentration is emphasized.

Coalbed gas content measurements are commonly used in mine safety as well as coalbed methane resource assessment and recovery applications. Gas content determination techniques generally fall into two categories: (1) direct methods which actually measure the volume of gas released from a coal sample sealed into a desorption canister and (2) indirect methods based on empirical correlations, or laboratory derived sorption isotherm gas storage capacity data. Direct gas content determination techniques may be further. subdivided into quick-crushing and extended desorption methods. The quick-crushing methods are primarily used in mine safety applications outside the United States, but have also been used for resource recovery applications. Quick-crushing methods rely on crushing the coal sample soon after collection to release all the desorbable gas, thus significantly shortening the amount of time required for desorption measurements. However, some data useful for resource recovery applications are lost. Extended desorption techniques are most commonly used for resource assessment and recovery applications where information on desorption rates is useful for reservoir modeling, and for fundamental coalbed methane research. Extended desorption methods allow the gases in the coal sample to desorb under controlled laboratory conditions until a defined low desorption rate cutoff point is reached. The sample may then be crushed to measure the amount of gas remaining within the sample. Direct method techniques for gas content measurement are the focus of this paper.

Background: A cross-sectional study was conducted in November2001 to establish the prevalence rates of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoea) in a coalmining town in Mpumalanga. Methods: 155 adults were recruited (79 males and 76 females), by holding community meetings, and by door-to-door recruitment. Saliva and urine specimens were collected for the analysis of HIV and STI prevalence, respectively. Results: The mean age for males was 31.35 years (min = 19 yrs and max = 50 yrs) and the mean age of the female participants was31.90 years (min = 17 yrs, max = 49 yrs). The prevalence of HIV was found to be 22.78% [95% CI (14.09?33.59)] in the males vs. 47.37%[95% CI (35.79?55.16)] in the females, [p = 0.001, OR = 3.05, 95%CI(1.49?6.26)]. The prevalence of C. trachomatis was 7.90% [95% CI(2.95?16.39)] in the males vs. 12.86% [95% CI (6.05?23.00)] in the females, p = 0.324. The prevalence of N. gonorrhoea was 3.79%[95% CI (0.79?1.08)] in the males vs. 9.86% [95% CI (4.06?19.26)]in the females, p = 0.137. HIV was significantly associated with C. trachomatis, [p = 0.032, OR = 3.18, 95% CI (1.04?9.72)], but was not significant when stratified by gender. HIV was not significantly associated with N. gonorrhoea (p = 0.072) but it was significantly associated when stratified by gender, p = 0.001 for females. There were no significant associations between HIV and age (p = 0.408), even upon stratification by gender. Conclusions: HIV prevalence in this community is high, and corresponds to national figures. However, the prevalence of STIs is surprisingly low as it would be expected to be high in a migrant population. Although communities are exposed to expanding peer-education activities that encourage behaviour change, the prevalence of HIV in this group.
