Coal mining legislation makes frequent reference to æSafety Management SystemsÆ but there is a chronic shortage of useful guidance material as to how these might be applied to hazardous exposures. Several studies have indicated that for each death that is reported as a result of an industrial æaccidentÆ, there are five deaths that caused by occupational exposures. Because the deaths from occupational exposures do not occur on site and often well after employment has ceased, they are generally unreported. Improved access to mortality data from coroners, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and superannuation service providers (early claims from death and total permanent disability), has given rise to some analysis of death and disability data that provides evidence that there are emerging opportunities to develop and improve safety management systems for hazardous occupational exposures. Issues explored include how safety management systems might be developed in relation to dusts and chemicals and other hazardous exposures to ensure the risk of disorders with long latency periods are reliably assessed and the exposures effectively managed. The current standards and guidelines which refer to safety management systems in general or to management of exposure related hazards are examined. Many standards are based on dose-response studies that provide for an acceptable percentage of workers to suffer adverse health outcomes. An alternative management system might be to apply dose-response relations to health surveillance to identify æat riskÆ individuals and effectively manage health and related safety risk at an early stage.

The reprocessing of tailings resources to extract gold on an industrial scale has become common practice. While these projects are common in the Witwatersrand basin, similar low-technology processes are not operational in smaller goldfields. This study explores the possibility of reclaiming the tailings dump of the Louis Moore Mine in the Giyani Greenstone Belt, investigates potential hazards to communities in the vicinity, and identifies mitigation strategies. Auger samples were taken from the Louis Moore tailings at depths of up to 5 m. Aqua regia leach analyses show Au concentrations of up to 1 g/t. Inferred estimations based on ordinary kriging (OK) and inverse distance weighted (IDW) methods put the residual Au resource in the Louis Moore tailings dump at 0.20 t. Reworking the tailings is viable, although a potential environmental risk exists in the form of elevated arsenic concentrations. Further exploration is required to determine the mineralogical associations of Au and As. Tailings reworking would assist in raising funds for mine rehabilitation. The secondary tailings could potentially be repurposed, which would provide employment and facilitate community development, as well as deliver environmental benefits.

This paper describes a real-time fleet management system for an undergroun mine. Dispatching, routing and scheduling are handled simultaneously, taking into account the mine status, operational constraints and vehicle location information. Each assignment decision takes into account the traffic on the road segments of the mine network, whether road segments are bi-directional or uni-directional, and ensures that each LHD (load-haul-dump) vehicle arrives at loading and dumping points with the correct orientation. Such a system can be used either as a simulation tool for strategic planning or as a real-time managing and optimizing system for operations. In the simulation mode, the system can accurately estimate the impact on productivity of decisions such as the development of waiting areas (bays, sidings), or the addition (elimination) of vehicles to the fleet in operation. When used for real-time dispatching, routing and scheduling of vehicles, the system can optimize production with respect to various assignment criteria such as cycle-time minimization or deviation from a target production plan.

THESE forums have been held annually since they were introduced by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The response of millmen to questionnaires such as the one this year is ample evidence of the interest these create. This year's topic is unlike those of past years since it is an attempt to understand a new concept of grinding rather than to improve the old. Before, we were thinking in terms of 2-5 cents improvement in grinding costs, now we will be discussing savings of 15-2 5 cents. As a background for this forum we will begin by summarizing the major controversial issues relating to grinding with steel, many of which will undoubtedly apply to pebble milling. Our •task to-day is to learn what has already been done in pebble milling and obtain a fair overall view of this method of grinding.

"Oilfield cementing has been utilized in the industry since the turn of the century. Originally, wells were shallow and criteria for well integrity were somewhat limited. Since that time, wells have stretched the envelope in depth, temperature, and pressure. Environmental regulations have also become more stringent, thus, the importance of hydraulic isolation between permeable zones, and between these zones and surface has become more and more important.Initially, oilfield cements were comprised predominantly of construction cement and very limited additives. As time progressed, additives were incorporated to control pumping time or placement time and little effort was placed on optimizing actual components within the cement chemistry. This paper presents issues and concerns created by adding just one new component to the fundamental chemistry of an oilfield cement."

Inferring individual component flotation rates from recovery-time data of ore complexes is important in optimising and designing minerals processing plants. However, existing two-component first-order flotation models are computationally intensive to solve using conventional non-linear least squares regression. In this paper, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is used to approximate the inverse function which predicts the two-component first-order model parameters using recovery-time data. This paper compares the accuracy and computation speed of the proposed CNN against traditional non-linear least squares regression on 1 million generated data based on a known two-component firstorder kinetic model. It is shown that using a CNN is possible to approximate the inverse function for the non-invertible two-component model with recovery-time as an input matrix for convolution operations. The CNN method is 450 times faster to compute than the Trust-Region (TR) non-linear least squares regression algorithm. However, the CNN model is less accurate compared to the TR algorithm overall. A completely automated primary crusher is now in operation at Kaiser Steel Corp.'s Eagle Mountain, Calif., iron mine. The word "completely" is italicized to underscore its literal meaning- automation so thorough that even the control room for the crusher does not require a man to watch the flickering dials and lights. The automation of the unit is such that its operation, including starting and stopping, are controlled from the secondary crusher station. The crusher-a Symons 60-in. gyratory which can handle 3600 tph-features built-in safety devices that will turn the crusher off if oil pressure drops, if oil overheats, if bearing temperatures exceed permissible limits, or if parts of its electronic brain fail. According to reports, the worst that can now happen is a plugging of the crusher.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. "Many mentorship programs are available to Canadian mining industry employees. Some are company-led initiatives, whereas others are provided through educational institutions or nonprofit organizations. In 2016, a national survey was launched to gain insight into perceptions of what mentorship is, learn about available programs, and collate experiences with formal and informal mentorship opportunities. This paper outlines survey findings and delivers recommendations to industry for consideration in employee mentorship programs. In addition, mining industry leaders share their mentor/mentee perspectives. The intent of this paper is to bring awareness of best practices that can help employees grow and develop in their profession.RÉSUMÉ Les employés de l’industrie minière canadienne ont accès à de nombreux programmes d’encadrement. Certains sont des initiatives menées par les sociétés, d’autres sont proposées par le biais d’établissements d’enseignement ou d’organismes à but non lucratif. En 2016, une enquête à l’échelle nationale a été lancée en vue d’obtenir des informations quant à la perception de ce qu’est réellement l’encadrement, de découvrir les programmes proposés et de comparer les expériences aux possibilités d’encadrement, officielles ou non. Cet article présente les résultats de cette enquête et fournit des recommandations à l’intention de l’industrie afin qu’elle les prenne en compte dans ses programmes d’encadrement des employés. En outre, des chefs de file de l’industrie minière partagent leurs points de vue conseillers/protégés. INTRODUCTIONThis paper about mentorship in the mining industry is based on voluntary responses to a cold survey, written and circulated by the authors. In 2016, a link to an online mentorship survey was circulated to males and females in the mining industry with the belief that mentorship programs should be available to everyone. The link was delivered via the authors’ personal networks in mining, the CIM Reporter, Women in Mining (WIM) email blasts, LinkedIn, and Facebook. This paper summarizes the answers to the survey questions. The paper is a follow up to one by the same authors (Nyabeze, Espley, & Beneteau, 2010), which was written to gain insight into why women join and stay in the mining industry, and to learn why the overall representation of women is low."

This presentation reports survey findings that aim to modernize the definition and understanding of the term 'mining.' The survey, conducted via LinkedIn in Winter 2024, garnered responses from a diverse group of individuals, including current or former employees of mining or exploration companies, mining consulting firms, service providers, supplier firms, as well as students and retirees with industry experience. The data, ethically approved by the University of Saskatchewan, offers valuable insights into satisfaction levels within the mining sector and suggests an expansion of the identifying characteristics of definitions of mining. This marks the third CIM gaining insights paper by Beneteau, Espley, and Nyabeze, following previous works on 'Career Satisfaction for Women in Mining' (2010) and 'Mentorship Initiatives in the Canadian Mining Industry' (2018*)."

The friendly jibe of the novelist contains enough exaggeration to make it humorous to the followers of Huxley and Spencer; but could any litterateur poke similar fun at the exponents of the avowedly utilitarian branches of science-the men of technology-without suggesting an unpleasant truth? Indeed the engineer does bungle language deplorably. He makes a fetish of efficiency, yet he shows no regard for the effective use of one of his most important tools-the pen; he believes devoutly in accuracy, yet he employs an instrument of precision as carelessly as a small boy handles a gun. This inconsistency may be due to causes such as were indicated by the Academic Senate when it undertook to explain the defective writing of the; students in this university.* The Senate suggested that the student is "constantly subjected by his environment to the unedifying influence of myriad examples of poor English", and that he is also affected by "a certain public prejudice against correctness of expression ". With these statements most of us will agree. Our local newspapers, for instance, tend to spoil the student's taste for good English; later in life, as an engineer, his daily contact with illiterate men inclines him to careless speech and slovenly writing. Humic-acid-rich deposits exist in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, New York, North Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, and Wyoming (Burdick, 1965) and in New Mexico (Shomaker and Hiss, 1974). New Mexico humic deposits are associated with coal in the northwestern part of the state where humate and weathered coal are presently mined. Discussion of the humic -acid industry in New Mexico requires an understanding of complex terminology and coal geology. TERMINOLOGY Humic material is not a pure substance so an ambiguous and complex terminology is in use by geologists, chemists, soil scientists, agronomists, and producers. Material mined for its humic-acid content is an extremely variable mixture of base-soluble humic, fulvic, and ulvic acids and their salts, formed during partial or complete decay of organic matter. This decay releases a high-molecular-weight organic material which is darkly colored, partly colloidal, and weakly acidic.

I spent 41 years as a geologist with the US Geological Survey (USGS) conducting geologic studies and preparing peer reviewed maps and reports describing the results of those studies. Since retiring from the USGS in 2011, I have been a consultant specializing in aggregates and other industrial minerals. Consequently, I have had the opportunity and pleasure to apply the information contained in those kinds of geologic maps and reports to real-life situations. About half of my consulting is performing due diligence for mineral resource evaluations of one type or another where resource information has been provided by the property owner. Many of those jobs necessitate that I conduct desktop studies followed by field work. I then use my information to review and comment on the written reports of others; reports variably referred to as geologic reports, resource studies, reserve analyses, and so forth. While there are many well written reports addressing geologic resource issues, I was surprised to see that there are also a significant number of so-called geologic reports that only pay cursory attention to geology. Unfortunately, that lack of rigorous geologic investigation commonly leads to erroneous conclusions. This paper addresses three such reports covering concrete sand, metallurgical gravel, and proppants (frac sand). Although all three examples are located in the Gulf Coastal Plain Province, I do not reveal the exact location of any of the properties for purposes of confidentiality. Furthermore, I have generalized the site descriptions and illustrations. However, all the descriptions faithfully define the geologic situation.

A case study for the application of a novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of a narrow steeply dipping, gold-silver mineralized quartz vein deposit is presented. The technique is novel in two respects. First, mineral grades are kriged directly rather via the accumulation method more often applied to vein deposits and, second, a modified 2D ordinary kriging algorithm is used that allows the calculation of a single grade and variance for irregular shaped blocks of varying sizes. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the suitability of this novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of the Poura mine deposit and, if appropriate, to lay a firm foundation for future geostatistical work at the mine. The reserve estimation concentrated on the remnant ore blocks and pillars in both underground and surface workings. The data, which was collected in 2D coordinates with grade and vein thickness values, was first analyzed statistically and used to compute experimental semi-variograms. Appropriate semi- variogram models were fitted and various aspects of the estimation technique were evaluated using cross-validation error analysis, with acceptable results. A block kriging computer program called Krige2D was developed to implement the modified 2D kriging algorithm and calculations. Production data were not available to evaluate the computed block resources, but they were compared with a previous resource data determined using an arithmetic approach. The geostatistical technique estimated slightly higher grades but lower overall tonnages as compared to the earlier arithmetic estimates.

Glass recycling in the Netherlands 'has grown fr.om 10.000 to 300.000 tonnes per annum. The various advantages and problems of the glass cycle with reference to the state of the art in the Netherlands is given. Special attention is given to new technologies for the automated sorting of cullet with detection systems. In Western Europe the recycling of glass has, become a success story. Because of this, the percentage of ,glass cullet used in ,glass furnaces has increased. To meet the quality demands of the glass industry, automated sorting for the removal of stones, non-ferrous metals and other impurities ,had to be developed and incorporated in glass recycling plants. ;In Holland, Germany and other countries, the amount of glass collected has reached a level that colour-sorting becomes necessary to avoid market saturation with mixed cullet. Recently, two systems for colour-sorting have been developed and tested for the separation of bottles and culletin the size .range of 20 -50 mm. With the increased capacity of the new glass recycling plants, 120,000 -200,000 tpy, the quality systems have also to be improved and automated. These quality control systems are based on tile automated sorting technology developed earlier. for the glass recycling plants. The data obtained are automatically processed and printed. The sampling system and its relation to the theory of Gy will be described. Results of both developments in glass, recycling plants will be described.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an Iron oxide copper-gold sublevel cave mine located 30 minutes north of Cloncurry in North-West Queensland. The underground mine lies beneath open pit excavations, which were in operation from 1999 to 2011. Fault structures carry large quantities of water from the cover sequence aquifer into the underground mine area. The open cut excavations exacerbates vulnerability of the underground mine to the high intensity wet season storms of northern Queensland. These factors combine to make hydrogeological issues high priority for mine operation. Water-related risks include the cost of removing water from the mine, flooding risk and mud rush potential.Turnover of key technical staff in late 2015 at EHM resulted in the mine being left in an untenable position of losing the primary source of technical knowledge. Due to encouragement of cross-disciplinary activity coupled with workload and resource sharing, the management team were confident in utilising on-site personnel to offset loss of experienced personnel.Remaining geology personnel took additional responsibility for hydrogeological monitoring equipment and planning of upcoming work. Consultant input was limited to review only and an emphasis was placed on knowledge transfer to the geology team. Using this strategy, a 13 hole dewatering program was successfully implemented, achieving a significant water level drop in areas of elevated hydrological risk, whilst also upgrading the hydrological monitoring sensor array.Through a development program centred on cross-disciplinary exposure, the technical team was able to retain key technical knowledge despite staff turnover and produce strong results outside traditional training and roles. Porphyry copper deposits are the most important source of copper and also gold within the orogenic belts. These deposits are characterized by low grade copper ore (0.2% to 1% copper) and host precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. A characterization tool has been developed for complex porphyry type copper-gold deposits with an aim to quantify copper and precious metal deportment. This quantification is a challenging task due to low grades and also due to the presence of both visible and invisible precious metal content in different sulphide and non-sulphide phases. Studies were initiated on various complex, ore deposits and also on samples representing various processing streams such as flotation and leach products. This paper presents the development of a systematic approach to diagnostic metallurgy using state-of-the-art optical and automated mineralogy, micro-probe, dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS analysis for quantification of invisible and visible precious metals content in various species. The relevance of this characterization to metallurgy will also be briefly discussed in this paper.
