China has a traditional segment of Copper Smelters with its own Chinese technology, typically small in size from 20.000 to 50.000 tCu/a, and they are responsible for the processing and production of more than 600,000 tonnes of blister copper per year. For occidental experts, like one of the authors, it is not so easy to believe that they are profitable, because the size and the use of old Blast Furnaces, but they are with simple and effective production lines. The authors are convinced that China has a good alternative to improve theses old copper production lines with small innovative changes in its process arrangement, jumping to higher level technology, more efficient in production, productivity and cost, assuring copper as a raw material for the country and its high speed development. The key to improve that the traditional Chinese Copper Smelter is white metal as an extra raw material as a first step doubling the copper production from raw materials and the complete replacement of concentrates by white metal (WM) in a second step increasing it four times or more as the final goal. It is not so difficult nor expensive to make it happen, but there are a couple of questions for implementing this innovation in the copper smelter industry: 1 - Will the old fashioned mentality be open to this new direction for China being the biggest copper consumer on one side, and the biggest copper Primary Producers on the other hand? and 2 - Will they be open to follow this "win-win" strategic way for both ends of the copper market? We don't know if anybody will take up the challenge to improve it but our responsibility as a consulting expert and a university professor is to put the alternative on table for others to decide whether to implement it.

Historically the hydrogen fluoride laden fume emitted from the electrolytic cells in the aluminium reduction process is further treated in pulse jet dust collectors. These dust collectors act as dry scrubbers performing two duties: adsorbing the gaseous fluoride emitted from the cells onto alumina dust; and collecting the alumina dust minimising particulate and fluoride emissions to the environment.Patented StarBag (TM) technology has been used in aluminium smelters in Australia as a means of increasing the dust collection and fluoride scrubbing capacity of existing collectors. This technology provides an alternative to major capital equipment upgrade where increased capacity is required, and potentially lowers the production cost per tonne of aluminium where capacity limitations are being realised and production expansion is required. This paper presents the findings of on-site pilot scale, and full production scale comparative tests, highlighting the operational and variable differences observed utilising the Star-Bag(TM) technology at Boyne Smelters Ltd in Australia. The results illustrate how this technology can be utilised to increase the hydrogen fluoride scrubbing efficiency and dust collection capacity of existing capital equipment.

For conventional aerospace aluminium alloys of the 2000 (copper) and 7000 (zinc, magnesium) series the recycling of process scrap from both metal suppliers and aircraft manufacturers is a well-established, worldwide industry. The recent introduction of a new family of alloys that incorporates lithium has posed a new challenge to the recycling industry owing to the high cost of lithium, its high reactivity to the atmosphere and to refractories and its absence from the specifications of all other registered alloys. Various process options for recycling have been identified, but vacuum distillation has been selected as the most cost-effective and technically feasible solution. Experimental work established that the separation of Li from AI-Li scrap is feasible and an industrial process has been designed. The economics of Li recovery are very sensitive to the AI-Li content of the feed material. Owing to the design of aerospace vehicle manufacturing plants it is expected that the swarf will be mixed with other alloys. A method of enriching this feed has been developed that is based on the control of swarf morphology by thermal and mechanical treatments as a precursor to eddy-current separation. After eddy-current separation and vacuum distillation small proportions of Li are retained in the AI residue. The effects of this on the properties of conventional AI-Si shape-casting alloys were investigated and safe threshold levels have been established.

"Aluminothermic (""thermite"") smelting became commercial with the development of tonnage aluminum, and prospered producing metals and alloys with higher cleanliness, consistency and elemental control than competing technologies. We explore the scope of thermite smelting, and metallothermic smelting in general; the thermochemistry of the process; and its advantages and limitations as applied to industrial production. We review currently-produced products of thermite smelting in several forms and a wide range of heat sizes. As these products serve several industries, we relate the demands of those industries to the requirements imposed on the thermite process, leading to process dynamics and mechanisms to control/alter those dynamics. We review ways to lower the process costs by altering process stoichiometry, using other energy sources and utilizing less costly materials while considering effects on product quality and customer requirements. Finally, we examine overall emissions control and waste disposal.IntroductionAluminothermic smelting is the reduction of various oxides by aluminum to produce metals or alloys with varying levels of residual aluminum. One of the earliest uses of the process was the production of liquid iron to weld railroad rails, later modified in ""thermite grenades"" used to ""spike"" artillery pieces in World War II. Then during the 50's, 60's and 70's the growth of jet aircraft created a demand for new superalloys and titanium alloys, both requiring master alloys for efficient production. Aluminothermic smelting grew with the aerospace industry and with the expansion of microalloyed steels. It is very much a niche industry, dependent on the specialized demands of the specialty steel, superalloy and titanium industries. In this paper we introduce the characteristics of aluminothermic smelting, the scope of smelting operations, the markets served, and the environmental aspects of the process, as seen through the eyes of a company using aluminothermic smelting for over fifty years"

Recovery of aluminum metal from drosses? is a major factor in the recyclability success story enjoyed by the United States aluminum industry. Today's modern dross processor uses the latest technology to maximize metal recovery at the lowest cost while complying with all environmental laws and regulations. Most dross processors, however, pay little attention to the resulting saltcake, the end residual of dross recyCling, and rely on landfills for .disposition of this material.. The alternative is to recycle the saltcake, but the success of this technology is dependent on the development of reliable outlets for each of the saltcake constituents. This paper discusses the evolution of an aluminum dross oxide processing technology that ,produces an economically attractive source of alumina for the production of portland cement.

The challenge is to use more end of life scrap in alloy formulation whilst at the same time extending the property range in terms of both strength and formability.

MOST students that plan to enter the mining profession attempt to obtain some kind of practical experience before graduation. Six or seven years ago it was an easy matter for undergraduates to find employment during the summer vacation and return to school in the fall filled with enthusiasm to dig deeper into the theoretical field. However, during the past few years it has become extremely difficult for an inexperienced undergraduate to obtain even a menial job in mining. This was the situation which presented itself to the author and his partner, T. M. Patten several months before school closed in May, 1934. At that time, Mr. Patten's training consisted of two years study in Mining, and mine included three years' study in Mining Geology at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. With this technical training and no practical experience, we conceived the idea that custom assaying in some of the western mining districts should be a lucrative business. We thought that the renewed interest in prospecting for gold and the opening of new mines should provide more assay work, and believed that we might secure it if we were on the spot where the assaying was needed. We realized that it would be out of the question for us to obtain the necessary equipment with which to establish an assay office. Even if such an office were established we had a maximum of but three months during which to operate. So we determined to build some kind of inexpensive equipment that could be placed in an automobile, or trailer, and be moved from one camp to another. We then began to study the theoretical aspects of assaying and started experimental work with the equipment that we proposed to build.

The coming years should see moderate growth in the US coal industry. That growth may come at the expense of the oil and natural gas industries. Conoco pegs coal growth at 2% a year, until the year 2000. During that same period, Conoco projects only 0.5% annual oil growth and "a flat or negative trendline" for natural gas. This is compounded by the fact that coal has a delivered cost per Btu that is only half as much as it is for natural gas and only a third as much as it is for oil. So said Ralph Bailey to many of the 2600 attending the opening session of the American Mining Congress Coal Convention, May 12-15, in Pittsburgh, PA. Bailey is chairman of the AMC. He is also chairman of Conoco. While coal's projected growth is not spectacular, "it is in fact almost an assured growth," Bailey said. Weak oil and gas prices will likely prevent faster growth for US coal. Most of coal's increased demand will come from the electric utility industry and expanded steam coal exports. Conoco's study projects that domestic coal demand will be strengthened in the 1990s. By then, the present surge of nuclear power plant constuction will be over. And there will be a lack of acceptably priced, large-scale generation alternatives for utilities. "It is not likely that any electric utility is going to be ordering new nuclear reactors," Bailey said. "And as oil and gas supplies become scarcer and more costly, it is only logical that coal is going to fill the gap." At the same time, Bailey believes the US coal industry must find ways to lower its costs. He said cost excesses can be found in "regulatory overkill, labor, and simply bad habits" hidden by years of high inflation. "Those costs have now been laid bare, because we are going through a pe¬riod of disinflation. We have to put our house in order, particularly if we are going to compete in world markets." Bailey also touched on coal research. "The industry certainly accepts the fact that we must find a way to burn coal as cleanly as possible. A lot of work in that regard is going on. I expect there will be some significant break-throughs." Bailey said the coal industry is being squeezed this year. Last year, coal customers accumulated inventories in anticipation of a major coal strike that never materialized. Now, many utility customers are working down these inventories. So they are not taking deliveries on their coal contracts. But coal use is up in 1985, compared with 1984, Bailey said. So increased coal use, along with supply drawdown, should strengthen the coal market before the year is out, he said. After Bailey's presentation, some 100 speakers addressed policy and technical topics at 15 sessions during the four-day meeting. It was the first time since 1977 that the AMC Coal Convention has been held in Pittsburgh. And this year's attendance was up 40% from the last AMC Coal Convention held two years ago in St. Louis, MO. This year's registrants included 228 companies, 225 manufacturers, and 106 associated members. The only negative was the David Lawrence Convention Center. It was less than ideal. By turns, meeting rooms were too small, too cramped, or too far from one another. The session on longwall mining was so crowded that the doors were propped open so conference delegates could peer in. A concurrent manufacturers' forum session needed 50 more chairs to accommodate those wanting to attend. However, on to summaries of some of the presentations. Coal transportation and export Since Congress approved the 1980 Staggers Rail Act, railroad rates for hauling coal have not been excessive. In fact, rail rates for coal have increased less than 0.5% a year, in real terms, since 1980. Moreover, the market oriented principles written into Staggers are contributing to the improved financial and operational health of the nation's railroads. But no railroad is earning excessive profits. That is the gist of a coal transportation study being completed by the US Department of Energy. William Vaughan is DOE's assistant secretary for fossil energy. He affirmed the thrust of the upcoming report. Vaughan did allow that Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) regulations on rate reasonableness could permit the railroads to exploit their monopoly power on captive shippers. Net Present Value (NPV) derived from Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis remains the dominant metric for evaluating mining projects despite its well-documented inability to capture managerial flexibility under uncertainty. DCF assumes that all risks are perfectly priced by financial markets. This is an unlikely assumption for volatile commodity prices, geological variability, or the array of mining technical and operational risks present on all mine sites. Real Options Analysis (ROA) was developed to remedy this limitation by explicitly valuing the ability of managers to defer, expand, scale, switch, or abandon investments as new information emerges, and to capture upside and mitigate downside risks. While ROA is philosophically correct and routinely shows an uplift in project value compared with DCF, its practical application at industrial scale is severely constrained, ROA faces the reality of a combinatorial explosion in complexity of decision trees, Monte Carlo simulations and other models required when multiple interdependent or sequential options exist across numerous mining zones and time periods. The AMC Hill of Value® (HoV) process adopts the same intellectual foundation as ROA, that flexibility has economic value, but operationalizes it through a far more robust and scalable architecture. It is built on parametric relationships, rapid scheduling, and multi-objective evolutionary optimisation. HoV can evaluate millions of compound, interdependent real options in a single optimisation run, delivering resilient, adaptive strategies that preserve managerial flexibility while simultaneously optimising NPV, mine life, risk exposure, and other corporate objectives. This paper demonstrates that HoV is the practical, industrial-scale embodiment of real options thinking in mining: it discovers, ranks, and translates the most valuable real options into strategic mine plans, overcoming the scalability barriers that have prevented widespread adoption of classical ROA.

In the case of The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company v. The Richmond Mining Company of Nevada, recently tried at San Francisco, California, the real defendant was the Richmond Consolidated Mining Company, of London; but this being a foreign corporation, holds its mining property in Nevada through the Nevada corporation of similar name, in which the London Company owns all the stock, except the few shares necessary to " qualify" the American directors. The trial would naturally have taken place in the Circuit Court at Carson City, Nevada, and before a jury. But by stipulation of the parties, the case was tried in San Francisco, before Hon. Stephen J. Field, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Hon. Lorenzo Sawyer, United States Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit, and Hon. E. W. Hillyer, United States District Judge, for the District of Nevada. The hearing began July 23d, 1877. The witnesses occupied two weeks, and the argument of counsel three days. Very eminent lawyers were engaged on both sides; for the plaintiff, Messrs. Solomon Heydenfeldt, R. S. Mesick, John Garber, and H. J. Thornton; for the defendant, Messrs. S. M. Wilson, Thomas Wren, and J. J. Williams. The court held the case under advisement until August 22d, when Mr. Justice Field delivered its unanimous opinion in favor of the plaintiff. The action was a complaint in ejectment, and an appeal was taken to the United States Supreme Court. The questions at issue between the Eureka and the Richmond Company in this suit, comprised several points in the construction of the mining law of the United States, and its relation to the customs and regulations of the mining districts, which possess an importance and an applicability far beyond the limits of the case in which they arose. Of all natural resources, iron ore made into steel is the most important both in tonnage and value. The primary reason for the prosperity of the United States in the last century has been its pre-eminence in domestic supplies of iron ore and steel. The depletion of these reserves by two world wars and by the demand for richer blast furnace charges, as well as the constantly growing world- wide demand for steel, has fostered the recent quest for new iron ore mines around the globe. These developments have made a dramatic change in the iron ore picture of the world. It is the purpose here, however, to look briefly at the development of the United States iron ore industry, which has played such an important role in the events leading to the modern day boom in iron ore exploration.

NUMEROUS requests for the suspension of publicity make difficult the preparation of the annual review of copper metallurgy for 1934. In the United States, sales allocations indirectly have set restrictions on the scope of activities of producers and refiners, and necessitated closer cooperation between secondary and primary producers. However, the feeling exists that preparations for a return of intense competition should not he neglected, and careful investigations are being conducted for ways and means of improving industrial positions and production methods. In all probability, efficiency in technique and equipment will prove of far greater importance in the near future than production capacity, and many important developments in copper metallurgy later will be found to have been born during the current year.

Preamble At the present time many bodies are engaged in -the formulation of standards. There is no uniformity in the rules for such procedure in the different organizations; in some cases the committees engaged in the work are not fully representative, and in. a considerable proportion of cases they do not consult all of the allied interests. The present custom results in a considerable duplication of work, and in some fields several "standards" are proposed for the same thing, differing from one another only slightly and often in unimportant details. It is very much more difficult to obtain agreement between the proposers of overlapping standards after they have been published than it would be to get the proposers to agree before they had committed themselves publicly. The American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society for Testing Materials have appointed a committee to consider the advisability of cooperating in engineering standardization. This committee recommends that these societies form a permanent organization by appointing a committee as proposed in the following constitution and rules of procedure to carry on this very important work.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is a nonprofit organization whose objectives are public education about the mineral industries, and recognition of outstanding accomplishments in and contributions to the fields of mineral and fuel resources. Funds are being raised to the support the foundation?s educational programs. Among these is the Educational Outreach Program operated jointly by the foundation and the Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources.

The following letter has been received from the Chairman of the United States Shipping Board. August 1, 1918. American Institute of Mining Engineers, New York, N. Y. GENTLEMEN: I am going to call upon your organization for some teamwork. The time has come for Americans everywhere to put themselves solidly behind American ships. Our railroads must no longer stop at the ocean. We are building an American merchant fleet of twenty-five million tons-three thousand ships. We are backing modern ships with modern port facilities, establishing our bunkering stations all over the globe and will operate with American railroad efficiency. We will carry American cargoes at rates corresponding to our railroad rates-the cheapest in the world. Fast American passenger-and-cargo liners will run regularly to every port in Latin America, the Orient, Africa, Australia. Are you taking steps to use these ships to increase your own prosperity? Do you realize that American products of factory, farm and mine can be delivered to customers in foreign countries on terms which will build lasting trade? Do you realize the possibilities for bringing hack raw materials to extend your products and trade? We must all take off our coats and work to bring these American ships home to the people of every American interest and community. The manufacturer must think of customers in Latin America as being as accessible as those in the next state. The farmer must visualize ships carrying his wheat, cotton, breeding animals, dairy products and fruit to new world markets. The American boy must think of ships and foreign countries when he chooses a calling.

"The Garfield plant of the American Smelting & Refining Company is situated about seventeen miles west of Salt Lake City, on the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad, and has freight service by the Denver & Rio Grande Western, Western Pacific and Bingham & Garfield Railways.The site lies between the picturesque Great Salt Lake, with its mountain islands, and the northern point of the Oquirrh Range, which forms the western boundary of the Salt Lake Valley.The location includes several hundred acres of land rising from the southern shore of the lake, selected on account of its adaptability to the economical handling of materials by gravity methods.The smelter is a custom smelter, treating copper ores and concentrates produced in Utah and adjoining states.The ores treated consist mainly of oxides from the Tintic and Park City Districts, sulphides from Bingham District, and concentrates from the mills of the Utah Copper Company, from mills in California, and copper precipitates from the Ohio Copper Company. M ETHODS by which Americanization is developed among the foreign workers at the mines in the United States, with particular reference to mines of the Pennsylvania coal region, were discussed in a most constructive way at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute. Arthur Notman, of the Phelps Dodge Corpn., as chairman, guided the discussion. Americanization was defined by E. E. Bach, !chairman of the Institute's Sub-committee on Americanization, who said: "Americanization applies either to the native-born or foreign-born and is that process of assimilation which guarantees the full functioning of American citizenship. Naturalization papers merely entitle one to the privileges of citizenship."
