Sulphide mineral flotation is known to be affected by oxidation-reduction conditions in the pulp, although there is some doubt as to whether it is the oxidizing environment or the type of oxidant which influences flotation. Variations in the oxidizing conditions of the pulp and their subsequent effect on flotation were examined for two types of natural sulphide ore, a galenasphalerite ore and a complex pyrite ore. Different gas mixtures ranging from pure nitrogen to pure oxygen were used to control the oxidizing conditions. Zinc recovery increased with a more oxidizing environment, and nitrogen gas acted almost as a depressant for sphalerite in the flotation of the Pb-Zn ore. For the complex pyrite ore, the selectivity between chalcopyrite and both gangue and pyrite improved when the environment was oxidizing, resulting in higher Cu recovery in the copper rougher concentrate. The use of an oxygen rich flotation gas was found to be a suitable method for changing the oxidizing conditions and improving flotation under controlled conditions. The flotation results were correlated to the oxygen content and the redox potential, parameters which describe the pulp chemistry conditions.

The additives polyacrylamide, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, Tetra-butylammonium bromide, Benzalkonium chloride and chitin are evaluated during zinc electrolysis from synthetic acidic sulphate electrolyte containing Mn2+ ions, in absence and in presence of 0.0055 mg dm-3 of Sb3+ ions. Galvanostatic polarization tests for 2 hours at 50 mA cm-2 and 38oC were carried out to determine the cathodic and anodic potentials, and current efficiency of the deposited zinc. Potentiodynamic polarization and cyclic voltammetry tests have also been employed to study the electrochemical behavior of each additive on the zinc deposit on aluminum electrode. Results showed that, in presence of Sb3+, adding 1 to 3 mg of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride increases the cell voltage by ˜0-7 mV. Current efficiency is increased by ˜4.90-6.40%; power consumption is reduced by ˜147-173 kWh t-1 by adding 1-3 mg, respectively. However, in absence of Sb3+, cell voltage is decreased by ˜7-28 mV, current efficiency is increased by ˜0.70-1.50%; power consumption is reduced by ˜41-47 kWh t-1 by adding 1-3 mg. The effect of the other additives on cell voltage, current efficiency, lead content and morphology of zinc deposit has also been examined. Surface morphology and crystallographic orientation of the deposit was studied using scanning electron microscopic (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The content of lead in the deposit has also been measured using inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP).

The aim of this study was to understand clearly how VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives is influenced by parameters such as nitrate salt composition in the oxidizing phase, product density, blend composition, gassing rate, type of sensitization, etc. Also some VOD testing was performed on watergel-based gassed explosives in order to compare the results with those obtained for emulsions. VOD measurements were conducted in the surface blasting facility at the Research and Development laboratory of ENAEX SA (Calama, Chile). Despite the fact that the influences of some parameters on VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives are easily predicted, there was found to be an unexpected correlation. Although it is commonly believed that the VOD of gassed explosives depends on the density, this study found that the VOD depends on the both size and the amount of gas bubbles incorporated into the product as well as type of sensitisation, regardless of whether the explosive was straight emulsion or a blend. Density is just a consequence of the incorporation of voids into the explosive. Future work in this area may examine variation of other parameters, in order to obtain a greater knowledge of detonation properties and therefore to design more efficient explosives.

Many transmission towers, high-rise buildings and bridges are supported by piles. These structures may be subjected to large lateral loads. Therefore, experimental investigations on model piles under lateral loads were conducted in uniform dry sand. Small-scale model tests were carried out considering the influence of pile length, pile diameter, sand density, roughness of pile surface and vertical load on the lateral resistance of a pile. Furthermore, the effect of pile load eccentricity (e/L) on the ultimate lateral resistance was studied. Investigations, of the influence of various parameters on the magnitude of the coefficient of subgrade reaction (nh), were also performed. It was found that the lateral load capacity of piles increases with increase in pile length, pile diameter, pile surface roughness and increase in the sand density. The results also showed that the coefficient of horizontal modulus of subgrade reaction, (nh), decreases with deflection increase. From the results, the coefficient of subgrade reaction for a smooth pile embedded in medium dense sand would decrease by (134%) when the lateral pile head deflection (yg) changes from (2% to 5%) of pile diameter.

High solid corrosion protective coatings were prepared by the dust of the converter with an average particle size of 59.33 μm. The effect of different amount of benzyl alcohol diluent on the performance of high solid anti-corrosion coatings was studied. With the increase of the amount of diluent, the viscosity of high solid anti-corrosion coatings reducing, the film apparent bubble content decreasing, and film resistant to salt water corrosion ability decreased, while acid corrosion capacity enhancement. When the dosage of diluents is 15%, the coating film is more resistant to acid corrosion.

By direct aging treated, creep properties measurement and microstructure observation, the influences of the direct aging treatment on the creep behaviors of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy are investigated. Results show that the creep resistance of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy may be obviously improved by directly aged treatment. Under the applied stress of 700MPa at 660, the creep lifetime of the alloy is enhanced to 126h from 60h. During hot continuous rolling, the deformation features of the alloy are the twinning and the double orientations slipping of the dislocation activated within the twinning regions. After direct aging treated, the alloy displays a smaller grain size, and the finer g² phase is dispersedly precipitated in the matrix of the alloy, which is thought to be a main reason of enhancing creep lifetime of the alloy.

Much of the present knowledge about caving behavior of rock masses has been obtained from empirical observations. Additional notions about caving have been developed through inferences derived from two-dimensional finite element analyses. These analyses have indicated that a combination of one low-angle set of fractures and one nearly vertical set of fractures is the optimum fracturing configuration for ease of cavability of an orebody. This paper presents the results of two- and three-dimensional distinct element analyses which draw different conclusions than those reported from finite element studies. The distinct element method is selected far analysis of cavability because this method treats the rock mass as an assemblage of rock blocks which may interact individually, The results of the analyses are compared to a documented case history which involved a groundfall of 80,000 tons of ore in a 160-foot high pillar. The mechanics associated with these results are-explained in terms of simple static stability analysis of wedges. The propensity for orebody caving is primarily a function of the number of joint sets or potential "release" surfaces in the orebody. This mechanism is influenced by the bounding weak discontinuities, and intact strength of rock material.

IN the previous paper, the writer showed how, on the basis of thermodynamic reasoning, it seems probable that when true equilibrium conditions obtain, carbon exists as Fe3C in the liquid state and as elementary carbon in the solid state (7 Fe), in which case the solidus would be a straight line from 0.18 to 1.70 per cent. carbon (Fig. 1). In the same paper he concluded that the solidus obtained by Honda 'and his co-workers1 probably does not represent the same conditions, insuring a complete equilibrium. Except for a downward temperature displacement, the solidus obtained by Gutowsky,2 using the Heycock and Neville method, practically coincides with Honda's solidus as shown in Fig. 1. The writer at first thought that perhaps in some way Gutowsky's thermocouple was improperly calibrated for high-temperature measurements, as his liquidus was also much lower than those obtained by Carpenter and Keeling3 and by Ruer and Goerens.4 However, the eutectic temperature obtained by Gutowsky agrees with the generally accepted value of 1130° C., so that the validity of the inference regarding improper temperature calibrations is to be strongly doubted. The use of electronic detonators to control blast vibrations has been previously established by many authors. This is performed by determining the optimum delay period between the blast holes for a particular pattern that can accurately control the firing frequency of the blast, which in turn has a direct bearing on the frequency composition of the ground vibrations recorded at a particular location. This was established by Pedgen, Birch, Hosein & Farnfield (2006) whereby like-for-like comparison tests between non-electric and electronic blasts were carried out in a limestone quarry in northern England. They demonstrated that resulting peak particle velocity values recorded at near and mid-field distances were primarily a product of the firing frequency of the electronically initiated blasts.

This paper describes model-scale bench blasts on mortar blocks with distorted drill hole patterns, done in 2013–2014 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. The main aim of the project is to see if the fragmentation from and the crack development behind blasts with and without drill hole deviations differ significantly.The dimensions of the test blocks were 660 × 280 × 210 mm (L × W × H). They were mounted inside a yoke that allows the blast waves to escape (see Figure 1). Three rows in each block were shot row by row with a nominal pattern of B × S = 70 × 95 mm. The same nominal delay 73 µs (ie 1 ms per m burden) between holes was used throughout. Blocks with holes of stochastic collar position errors (variations in burden or in burden and spacing but constant row volume) and systematically shifted collar positions (blasts with staggered pattern) were shot. The results were compared to reference blocks without collar deviations.Apart from the sieving analysis, the remaining bench faces were measured with a stereo-photogrammetric method and horizontal roughness profiles for each row were constructed. Sawing slabs from block remains after the third row and use of dye penetrant allowed the study of internal blast damage.The analysis showed that none of the changes in borehole collaring had a significant effect on the sieving curve (median). The sieving results confirm earlier findings though that the fragmentation gets finer with the number of rows shot, implying that blast damage from earlier rows has an influence on the blasting results. The tests demonstrated that the nequiv (equivalent n-value) has increased ten per cent by shooting staggered pattern and decreased by seven per cent by pattern with burden and spacing errors. For the rest of the patterns, the nequiv was roughly the same.The surface roughness investigation showed that a smooth surface was achieved by the staggered pattern. The other deviations patterns did not show a clear trend.The internal blast damage, which was measured in the remaining part of blocks, showed that out of eleven, four crack families seemed to be most affected by blasting. A road tunnel is planned to be constructed in soft, high overburden ground of around 600 m in Japan by using the center drift advancing method. The dodging effect and early ring closure of the center drift were expected to reduce the displacement and deformation of tunnel and promote safe construction. The measurement result during construction was analyzed and those effects, which the displacement and deformation after the widening excavation decreased and its effect increased as the center drift radius increased, were confirmed by numerical analysis. Also, the effect of the early closure of center drift after widening excavation did not have much effect.

The stabil ity of engineered embankments subjected to earthquakes has received considerable attention in the last 10 years, but most of the effort has been directed toward stability of earth dams. Based upon past performance, earthquake- induced failures on non-impounding mine waste structures will likely correspond to small, local slumps or debris slides, and their stability should be considered as an integral part of mine economic planning. As such, stability considerations should include earthquake hazard, characteristics of earthquake ground motion, dynamic slope stability, and the impact that waste-dump failures have on mine operations. Numerous techniques have been proposed for analyzing the stability of embankments subjected to earthquakes. Before choosing an analysis technique, it is worth noting two important differences between the dynamic response of waste embankments and natural slopes. First, waste embankments respond as structures having unique modes of vibration, which causes embankment motions to differ from nearby ground motion. Second, because of embankment response, accelerations can be different at embankment crests than elsewhere in the structure and occur at frequencies that do not correspond to input ground motion. Because of these factors, embankment response should be calculated prior to slope stability assessment. In this paper several analysis techniques designed to calculate slope stability are evaluated, and conventional pseudostatic techniques are shown to be inappropriate for dynamic considerations. Techniques to calculate dynamic stability should include embankment response, all characteristics of earthquake motion, and roughness along failure planes as input, and should provide a displacement time-history of the slide mass as output. Two techniques satisfy this criterion, and in this paper the LADRS technique is recommended for its versatility and simplicity.

A steadily growing body of evidence indicates that earthquake ground motions can cause failure of rock slopes that are otherwise stable under static loading conditions. As a result, the economic optimum working slope angle is reduced when earthquake shaking is considered in surface mine design, especially in regions of high seismicity. When designing surface mine slopes to withstand seismic motion it is as important to consider the probability of experiencing various levels of ground shaking as it is to consider the characteristics of the ground motion. For most slope designs, simple probabilistic techniques such as extreme value or maximum likelihood techniques are appropriate. These techniques, however, should be applied in such a way that a probability value is assigned to characteristic ground motion parameters at the mine rather than to nearby earthquake magnitudes. Several techniques have been developed to analyze rock slopes subjected to dynamic loads. Most of these techniques do not adequately account for the ground motion parameters of concern. The best technique appears to be one that utilizes actual earthquake time histories. A simple technique that calculates block displacement for any input accelerogram, using a linear acceleration approximation between time steps, has been developed that accurately accounts for rock block response. Results using this technique indicate that the following factors are important for assessing rock slope stability in earthquake regions:

INTRODUCTION Ideally, this paper should start by citing examples of slope failures in open pit mines during earthquakes. I do not know of any such examples, although - since my search of the literature has not been exhaustive - such examples may well exist. However, there certainly are many examples of devastating earthquake-induced landslides, and there is no reason why such landslides cannot occur at large open pits. Moreover, many of the actual earthquake-induced landslides have seriously affected mining operations in one way or another. Hence, this paper will treat earthquake-induced landslide phenomena in general, in the hope and expectation that the reader can apply this general knowledge to the specific problems associated with open pit mining. Ultimately, of course, the aim is to predict the likelihood of the occurrence of earthquake-induced landslides, and to delineate steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of their occurrence. These aims can be achieved only imperfectly at the present time, for our knowledge concerning earthquake-induced landslides is still in an embryonic stage. Nonetheless, much useful knowledge does exist. In order to understand and apply this knowledge, it is necessary to: 1. Review the nature and extent of actual earthquake-induced landslides; 2. Have a grasp of the basic terminology and concepts of seismology; 3. Study the fundamentals of probability-based seismic risk analysis; 4. Appreciate the way in which earth materials behave during earthquake loadings; and 5. Have a general knowledge of the methods currently available for analyzing the dynamic response of slopes. Much of this paper is devoted to this necessary background. Information of practical use in connection with various classes of slope stability problems is assembled in the final sections. Closed-cell polyethylene (PE) foams have been extensively used in many applications such as packaging, transportation, sports, construction, and agriculture because of their variety of properties including light weight, chemical resistance, thermal and electrical insulation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of electron-beamirradiation on the properties of LDPE/EPDMblend foams. The LDPE/EPDM blend (80/20 wt%) were prepared by melt extrusion, using a twin-screw extruder machine. The foam structure of LDPE/EPDM blends was obtained by melt extrusion process, using a special single screw for foaming with 1.5 wt% of foaming agent as blowing agent. The foam samples were irradiated by electron-beamat radiation dose of 25, 50, 75 and 100 kGy and submitted to heating in an oven at 100 °C. The specimen tests samples of irradiated and non-irradiated foams were submitted to mechanical tests, DSC, TG analysis and density measurement.

During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. "Single crystal nickel-base superalloy is prepared by using the various withdrawing rates. By measuring creep properties and microstructure observation, the influence of the element segregation on creep properties of the superalloys is investigated. Results show that the dendrite spacing and the segregation extent of the elements decrease with the enhancing withdrawing rate. The superalloy with smaller dendrite spacing has lower segregation of the elements and better creep resistance. The dislocations climbing over the rafted y’ phase is thought to be the deformation mechanism of the alloy during steady state creep. In the later stage of creep, the fact that some dislocations shear into the rafted y’ phase may twist the rafted y’ phase. As the creep goes on, the initiation and propagation of the cracks occur up to occurring creep fracture, which is thought to be the fracture mechanism of the superalloy during creep.1. IntroductionSingle crystal nickel-based superalloys consist of high volume fraction of ?? strengthening phase and ? matrix, and possess the excellent high-temperature mechanical and creep properties, therefore, they have become the main material to make the blades of the advanced aeroengines[1-3]. For optimization of diamond processing technology the influence of nanosecond high voltage pulses on mechanical and technological properties of diamond crystals and kimberlite rock-forming minerals (calcite, olivine, serpentine) was investigated. Using methods of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), microscopy and mikrohardness measurement the changes of structural, physic-chemical surface properties, and microhardness of minerals as the result of impacts, was studied. Non-thermal impacts caused a decrease of kimberlite rock-forming minerals microhardness in general to 40-66% as the result of surface microstructure destruction which is caused by formation of micro cracks, traces of surface breakdown and other defects. At the same time, the pulse energy impact on natural diamonds led to formation of B2 type crystal lattice microsift defects, elevated concentration of which increases the hardness properties of crystals. The obtained result indicates possibility of applying pulsed energy effects to improve the softening efficiency of diamond-bearing kimberlites rock-forming minerals without damaging the diamond crystals and ensuring their preservation by the subsequent grinding of ores. By IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that processing by hight voltage pulses causes a change of natural and synthetic diamonds surface functional cover composition. Short-term exposure (~ 10 - 30) leads to detachment and partial destruction of secondary phases mineral films on the surface of natural technical diamonds, increasing floatability and hydrophobicity of crystals. However, with increasing duration of treatment (~ 30 - 150) occurs surface hydroxylation (found by XPS for synthetic diamonds), as a result of diamond surface layer oxidation. The effect of increasing the natural diamonds flotation activity by 14% (from 47% to 61%) was experimentally established as a result of processing diamond crystals with nanosecond pulses (~ 10-50 sec), which indicates the principal possibility of using pulsed energy impacts to intensify the diamond flotation during processing diamond-bearing kimberlites.

The University of Kentucky employs an explosively driven shock tube in the course of experimentation. A good deal of the work completed relates to the verification of blast mitigation products and strategies. The work is dependent upon reliably reproducing specific pressure time histories called out by the test in question. The facilities are located in the workings of an underground limestone quarry in Georgetown Kentucky. As such, the temperature maintains fairly consistent 60°F (15.6°C), making it a comfortable work environment year round. Unfortunately, the relative humidity follows the prevailing weather conditions allowing a wide variation, especially between the winter and summer seasons. A study was undertaken to gauge the influence of relative humidity on shock wave generation, including the positive and negative phases of the wave.

The study of the formation and components of copper patina and its conservation has assumed great importance. The changing environment has accelerated the processes of patinas degradation; thus, the exhaustive study of factors capable of affecting the patina formation, growth and durability has assumed great importance for the industrial activity of copper. The main components of the patina, oxides, chlorides, nitrates and sulfates, have been determined; the effect of physical, chemical and microbiological factors on patina formation, particularly the influence of acid rain, natural organic matter, particles and microorganisms have been defined. The effect of different electrolytic solutions that accelerate the formation of copper patinas has been determined, and a review of the state of knowledge of the formation and evolution of metal patinas has been made.
