I. INTRODUCTION. THE list of our past-Presidents comprises the names of runny who, in their official addresses, have sketched the current progress of the arts and professions with which they were familiar. Such addresses are, in my judgment., highly useful, setting forth the results of our own work as a. society, and recalling to our minds the particular lines in which discussion would prove most fruitful. . Following this course with some hesitation, I venture to offer an outline of the recent improvements and the present situation in minim and metallurgy in the Western United States. The wonderful advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity have all combined to aid these arts to such an extent that. progress during the last decade has undeniably been more rapid than ever before in the history of the profession.. In all mining countries improved transportation-facilities, in many instances called into existence by the traffic created by the mines themselves, have done much- to enlarge the. field of operations by the reduction of freight-, operating- and living-expenses, thereby bringing lower-grade properties into the producing class. Under normal' conditions, as the age of a district in¬creases, all these differentt factors should combine to off-set. the augmented costs attendant on deep mining, and greatly tend to prolong the profitable life of the mines. Discussion of the paper of D. W. Brunton, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 33, September, 1909, pp. 837 to 855. WILLIAM' KENT, New York, N. Y.:-The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is au admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly give's the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that. the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation' of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. Mr. Tennberg, he said, was visiting Australia, and those present might wonder who he was.He understood that the lecturer w~s a reputable practising geophysicist, associated with a reputable company! Abstract - Conductive heat flow anomalies associated with hydrothermal sulfide mounds on the seafloor have been studied. Sulfide mounds tend to focus conductive heat flow because sulfide minerals have a greater thermal conductivity than country rock. The topography of the mound above the seafloor, however, leads to a reduction of heat flow, particularly near the center of the mound. Because the focusing effect is constant, whereas the topographic effect decreases with distance away from the center, the focusing effect dominates toward the edges of the mound. The magnitude of these effects depends upon the conductivity contrast and the height/radius aspect ratio of the mound. Conductive heat flow anomalies at sulfide mounds also result from fluid circulation within the edifice. For the active and relict mounds at the TAG hydrothermal field, which have an aspect ratio of approximately 0.3 and a conductivity contrast of 3, the heat flux through the center of the mound should be roughly 70% of the background heat flux. The maximum effect of heat flow focusing is to increase the heat flux by about 30% above background. By comparing these effects with conductive heat flow data at TAG, we find that advective processes dominate conductive heat flow at both the active and relict mounds. Advective circulation can also give rise to much larger lateral and vertical temperature gradients than would result from conduction alone.

"Abstract - Twenty-seven marine Mn and Fe deposits chosen for their diverse origins have been analyzed for five platinum-group elements (PGE). The PGE display their highest concentrations in hydrogenous Mn crusts and nodules, lesser concentrations in diagenetic nodules and two to three orders of magnitude lower concentrations in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. This difference of behavior reflects the well-known fractionation of Mn and Fe from the other transition elements, rare earth elements (REE) and PGE in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir show a close geochemical coherence in these deposits and are differentiated from Pd which shows a negative anomaly with respect to the other PGE in hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits. Pd is less depleted than the other PGE and the Pd anomaly much less pronounced in the hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts relative to the hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits.Stability field diagrams show no evidence for the oxidation of Pt to the tetravalent state in seawater as suggested by some authors. Rather, Pt appears to be present in seawater as Pt(OH)2 0. Adsorption of Pt(OH)2 0 onto the surface of Mn and Fe oxyhydroxide minerals may explain the enrichment of Pt in marine Mn deposits. However, Pt metal is the thermodynamically stable solid phase of Pt under seawater conditions and reduction of Pt(OH)2 0 to Pt metal, particularly in the vicinity of the oxygen minimum zone, is possible, although the high Ce/La ratios of the Co-rich Mn crusts do not support this hypothesis. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir display their maximum concentrations in the Corich Mn crusts. This may reflect, among other things, the low growth rates of these deposits. The stability field diagram of Pd shows that Pd is undersaturated in seawater and occurs in seawater dominantly as PdCl4 2- and anionic mixed-hydroxide-chloride complexes. This would explain the anomalous position of Pd among the PGE with respect to its uptake into marine Mn deposits. A study of inter-element associations indicates that the incorporation of the PGE from meteoritic dust plays only a minor role in the uptake of these elements into marine Mn deposits. The PGE remain the most poorly studied group of elements in marine Mn deposits. The data presented here emphasize the need for the establishment of a more comprehensive database of the PGE in marine Mn deposits in order to understand more fully their uptake into marine Mn deposits and their pathways through the oceans."

Abstract - Detailed crystal-chemical study of iron and manganese oxides and some other minerals from low-temperature hydrothermal deposits in a newly discovered inactive mound in the TAG hydrothermal field were used to determine the precipitation sequence of mineral phases during lowtemperature processes and their post-sedimentary transformations. Particles of primary sedimentary X-ray amorphous proto-ferrihydrite with high silica content were replaced in situ by nontronite, ferrihydrite, or goethite during alteration. Ferrihydrite is the only proto-hematite phase. The transformation of the iron minerals, related to change in the physicochemical environment, is an important characteristic of low-temperature hydrothermal processes. The occurrence of hydrogenetic Fe vernadite and Mn feroxyhyte in the uppermost part of low-temperature deposits and bottom sediments near the base of the mound is evidence for cessation of low-temperature hydrothermal processes. Among the investigated mineral phases, goethite, nontronite, and hematite are stable in reduced sediments only.

"Abstract - A horizontal mineralogical-geochemical ore zonation with a southeast to northwest trending succession of Cu and Fe (Zn) main zones has been discovered in the Logatchev hydrothermal field (14°45??N Mid-Atlantic Ridge). The major minerals are pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, isocubanite, digenite and chalcocite. Zn-sulfide, marcasite and covellite are less abundant. Rare minerals are native copper, zincian copper and cobalt pentlandite (first found in oceanic massive sulfides), Cu and Cu-Co-bearing Fe-disulfides. Two groups of the main sulfide assemblages with different copper contents are recognized: Group I comprises assemblages with primary sulfides (isocubanite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and Zn-sulfide; Cu up to 35 wt% in Cu-bearing minerals); Group II contains assemblages with secondary Cu-rich sulfides (bornite, digenite, chalcocite; Cu ~60 wt%) as well as rare minerals (cobalt pentlandite, native copper and zincian copper). The assemblages of Group I formed at a temperature of about 300°C; the sulfur fugacity (log fs2 atm) at 300°C is probably 9.9. Relations between minerals of this group are contradictory, attributed to non-equilibrium environments, and no unified sequence of crystallization of minerals has been determined. Minerals of Group II replace, rim or cross the assemblages of Group I. Group II minerals crystallized in a distinct sequence (cobalt pentlandite-bornite-digenite- chalcocite-native copper), with increasing copper content from the start to the end of the depositional sequence. This may correspond to pH from 7 to 8 near Eh = -0.2 at 250°C. Minerals of this group were generally formed under hypergene alteration processes. Compositions of ore minerals were studied by means of electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) (150 analyses). Narrow composition fields were revealed in all main sulfides, which comprised known experimental data. ZnS contains 6.0 to 28.0 mol.% FeS, which is close to data known for other hydrothermal massive sulfides from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). A common admixture in ZnS is Cu (0.16 to 1.32 wt%). Rare grains of unusual anisotropic Fe-disulfides, (Fe0.95Cu0.05)S2 and Cu(Fe,Co)9S20, were found among the ore minerals."

"Abstract - The lipid component in hydrothermal deposits of the Logachev vent field, at 14°45_N of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) and Broken Spur vent field, at 29°N of the MAR, was studied. Biochemical, gas chromatographic (GS), and molecular mass methods (GC-MS) research established the mixed nature of the organic matter (OM) including phytoplanktonogenous, chemosynthesized lipids, and lipids of questionable origin. Specific local conditions around the sulfide ores of the black smokers (absence of free oxygen and presence of reduced copper, which prevents OM degradation) facilitate the preservation of biogenic material, including bacteria. The main differences between the lipid compositions of the hydrothermal deposits of these two vent fields relate to the variable nature of hydrothermal circulation systems.At the 14°45_N vent field, high-temperature hydrothermal fields are forming due to the reaction of sea water with upper mantle ultrabasic rocks during serpentinization (a deep hydrothermal circulation system). High pressure and temperature (>400°C), a reducing environment and the presence of various metal oxides are favorable for the abiogenic synthesis of CH4 and oil hydrocarbons (HC). At the Broken Spur vent field, hydrothermal deposits are forming above axial crust magma chambers due to the interaction of sea water and basalts (an axial hydrothermal circulation system). Abiogenic synthesis of HC also occurs in this situation, but to a considerably lesser extent."

"Abstract - Shallow submarine hydrothermal fluids from Paleohori Bay off the Greek Island of Milos have been investigated in detail. The extensive gas and warm (max. 93°C) water vents are enriched in major components such as C1-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4 +, K+, Sr2+, H2S and CH4 and depleted in Mg2+, O2 and SO4 2- relative to ambient seawater. Based on zero-Mg calculations, it is deduced that the submarine vent fluids are related to the geothermal reservoir beneath Milos which has a similar chemical composition. Fluid samples from each vent in Paleohori Bay represent a mixture of hydrothermal end-member fluids derived from the upper and deeper geothermal reservoir systems of Milos, a mantle-derived source, a high-chloride fluid resulting from phase separation of geo thermal fluids and a steam-heated CO2-rich meteoric water. Résumé - À l’île de Milos dans la mer d’Égée, des fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux en eau profonde ont été récherchés en détail près de la baie de Paleohori. Les larges émanations de gaz et d’eau chaude (temperature maximale: 93°C) sont enrichies en constituants principaux tels que de Cl-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4+, K+, Si, Sr2+, H2S et CH4 et appauvries en Mg2+, O2, SO4 2- comparé à l’eau de mer environnante. Selon le calcul du zéro-Mg, nous en déduisons que les fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux sont dérivés du réservoir géothermal sous l’île de Milos car leur composition chimique est la même. Mid-ocean ridges host approximately 65 per cent of about 100 known sites of high-temperature venting and polymetallic sulfide deposits; most of them are located at the East Pacific Rise (EPR), while more diverse mineralisation styles occur at the Mid-Atlantic Rise (MAR). Seafloor hydrothermal activity at the EPR are related to MORB while different substrates, including MORB and ultramafic intrusive rocks, are associated with æblack smokersÆ at the MAR. Depth of hydrothermal activity ranges from 0.7 to 4.3 km. High-temperature vents precipitating Cu-Fe sulfides (chalcopyrite and isocubanite, rare bornite), pyrrhotite, pyrite (¦ marcasite), and sphalerite, and low-temperature edifices precipitating marcasite (with pyrite), sphalerite, barite, andsubordinate chalcopyrite (pyrrhotite and isocubanite are absent) occur in both environments. There are considerable differences in Fe, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au and trace element contents in ores and in theFeS contents in Zn-sulfides in these deposits. Acomparison with anhydrite and sulfide minerals precipitating from modern black smoker fluids sulfide reveals many similarities but also some important differences. Fluids with salinity values above and below that of seawater at 400¦C down to 130 - 170¦C deposited sulfide minerals. Mantle-derived He prevails in fluids trapped by sulfides in EPR 9¦N and 21¦N hydrothermal systems. Hydrothermal fluids in MAR and back-arc systems are richer in radiogenic 4He. The sulfur isotope composition varies in the different hydrothermal fields and within zones of a chimney. EPR sulfides display narrower range of d34S values, while MAR and back-arc sulfides can bedepleted and enriched in the heavier d34S isotope. The most important finding is that fluid temperature, salinity, R/Ra ratios and d34S values ranged more significantly in the polymetallic sulfide deposits than when measured directly on venting fluids. A survey of the longwall industry was conducted to examine the performance of modern shield technology. The results of this survey indicate that state-of-the-art shields perform better and last longer than ever before, but premature failures do still occur. In addition, longwalI operators are now using shields longer than ever before and a greater number of fatigue related failures on aging shields are now occurring. A generic assessment of these shield failures is provided, describing the nature of the failures and how widespread they are throughout the industry. An engineering assessment of shield design and factors that cause shield failures is made using both strength of materials and fracture mechanics principles. From this analysis, design practices to improve structural margins of safety and extend the life of the shield are proposed. The existence of unexpected shield failures indicate that current shield performance testing is at times inadequate. Recommendations are made relative to improved shield performance testing protocols including the benefits of testing in an active load frame such as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator. Even the most rigorous shield testing procedures, which strive to simulate in-service loading conditions, fail to consider key environmental issues, such as corrosion which is often the cause of structural fatigue failures in modern shields. The survey also indicated that hydraulic failures occur much sooner in the life cycle of a shield than structural failures, and although they can significantly degrade support capability, often go undetected for long periods of time. Methods to detect the hydraulic failures are also provided. The paper concludes with key points to maximizing shield design and life expectancy and ideas for future generation shield designs.

The paper describes and discusses the use of stainless steels for leaching plants emphasising the duplex family, i.e., austenitic-ferritic stainless steels. This group has generally twice the proof strength of the more common 300-series austenitic grades, which implies possibilities to reduce the gauge at construction of pressure vessels and atmospheric tanks and vessels and thereby possibilities to reduce the weight. The duplex grades have also higher surface hardness resulting in better resistance to mechanical wear, i.e., abrasion and erosion corrosion. The lower contents of nickel and molybdenum imply lower cost and a more stable price considering the present market situation for these alloying elements. EVERY user of steel should ask himself whether or not he is taking full advantage of the discoveries of the steel metallurgists during the last few years, or is merely buying grades that looked to be the best five or ten years ago for various specific purposes and have since proved perfectly satisfactory in his plant. If he has not kept abreast of the times, then it is probable that something better has been developed, or something just as good that costs less. Though this article will have to do with steel for high-temperature applications primarily, marked advances have been made in steels for other purposes as well.

OPEN-PIT mining of coal is relatively a recent innovation; men still active in the industry can trace its development. Re- viewing the growth of operations from the original horse-drawn scrapers, through the various stages of power equipment to the huge strip- ping shovels of today, one also notes changes in the methods of what the coal man calls preparation at the face. We really should not call it face preparation because, in contrast to underground mining, a face does not exist in strip mining. Further, preparation of the coal for market at the loading point has already, in but a few years, become largely of historic interest only and modern mines as well as old mines recently modernized rely almost entirely on separate and elaborate preparation plants to produce marketable coal. PRIOR to the development of the bulk-oil carrier, practically all transportation of oil was in barrels and in cans contained in wooden cases; the latter was known as case oil. In the year 1885, approximately two hundred million gallons of petroleum were exported from this country in barrels and about one and three-quarter millions in bulk; less than twelve years later, the shipment in barrels had decreased to nearly one and three-quarter million gallons, while the transport of bulk oil had increased to four hundred eighty-four million gallons. The first modern tanker, the "Glückauf," was built in England in 1886. Her hull, which was 300 ft. long, was divided into compartments by transverse bulk-heads, these compartments being divided by longitu-dinal center-line bulkheads extending throughout the oil spaces. There was a pump room forward of the boiler room, thus providing a cofferdam or safety space. Between the main and upper decks, a narrow trunk extended the full length of the' oil spaces, the trans-verse and longitudinal bulkheads being carried to the upper deck. This allowed for the expansion of the oil from a rise in temperature, and if the tank below the main deck was kept full, the danger of the oil moving with the roll and pitch of the vessel was considerably reduced. Spaces for the carriage of light oil were provided on each side of the vessel outboard of the expansion trunk, while water ballast was carried under the machinery compartments fore and aft. Although vessels previously had been built to carry oil next to the skin of the ship, it is claimed that the "Glückauf" was the first one constructed on the new principle outlined.

Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine analysis. The method, however, requires a good initial calibration and periodic checks on its precision and accuracy. Several examples from minerals processing, pyrometallurgy, and materials science show the strengths and applicability of the method. The limitations and sources of error are also discussed.

IntroductionDiffraction of X-rays by matter has been used for more than 80 years, initially to elucidate the structure of crystalline matter, and to investigate the bonding between atoms. The first development of powder diffraction cameras and the later development of X-ray diffractometers saw the development of methods to identify phases and to try to quantify them in mixtures. A comprehensive database and search-match techniques have been developed over the ensuing years. Effective and accurate quantification had to wait for the so-called Rietveld' analysis where the total diffraction pattern is used and where the crystal structure data for the constituent phases are needed as input. Overlapping of diffraction peaks of different phases is handled without difficulty and reliable results can be obtained in spite of this occurrence.The development of methods for structure analysis from powder data has also progressed rapidly and more and more complex structures are being solved from first principles, i.e. without knowledge of unit cell or space group data. Because of the ease of use of the Rietveld method, it is finding increased application in metallurgy, especially in the quantification of phases of importance in minerals processing, in pyrometallurgical processes, and in materials characterization. This study will examine the principles of the Rietveld method, its application in metallurgy, and finally also the common pitfalls that need to be avoided.2. Rietve1d AnalysisAs the Rietveld method compares the experimental diffraction pattern with one calculated from known crystal structure data, the following data are needed:•,An XRD Pattern with as Iowa background as possible. This should have good resolution and high diffraction peak intensities. With modem X-ray detectors, this can be achieved in minutes rather than hours.•,Instrumental parameters such as goniometer radii and slit sizes are needed. These are the so-called ""Fundamental parameters"". They are used to calculate the shapes of the resultant diffraction peak profiles that are caused by the instrument. The parameters are used to correctly separate the instrumental effects on the diffraction pattern from the sample effects."

The past decade has seen revolutionary advances in communications and information-handling techniques which have been stimulated by "cold war" military requirements and by current programmes for probing into outer space. The tools used in exploration for petroleum and minerals have been improved significantly as a result of this new space age technology and even greater improvements are on the way.Two areas of technical activity have been particularly fruitful in enhancing the effectiveness of exploration methods. These are1. the development of new approaches, based on information theory,for extracting signal from noise more efficiently than before, and2. the use of high-speed digital computers for storing and processing all kinds of exploration information, not only geophysical but geological as well.In seismic prospecting, use of information theory has led to new techniques such as time-domain filtering, wave-number filtering and correlation methods which have made it possible to obtain usable reflection data from areas which were previously considered non reflective. Complex playback and other data processing facilities have been developed to apply these approaches.Digitization of geophysical data for handling by high-speed electronic computers facilitates many of these techniques for signal-to-noise improvement. Direct digital recording of seismic data in the field is now being d'one on an experimental basis in the United States, and this should become a standard procedure, at least for problem areas.The increased dynamic range, flexibility of filtering and other data processing, and convenience of information storage and retrieval make digital recording attractive in spite of its high cost compared to conventional analogue methods.
