The American Iron and Steel Institute (AlSO, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) jointly funded the development of a mechanical properties model for Hot Strip Mills. INTEG process group, inc. validated an enhanced version of the model under a project funded by the AlSI/DOE Technology Roadmap Program (fRP). The Hot Strip Mill Model (HSMM) version 6.0 allows users to easily set-up their mill configuration, simulate a rolling mill schedule and calibrate the model for a variety of grades of steel. Starting from reheat furnace drop out, the model simulates roughing mill stands (reversing and continuous), heat retention equipment (coil box and covers), finishing mill stands (tandem and Steckel mills), the run out table and the mill exit area. The HSMM uses a series of physical models to calculate both the thermo-mechanical and the microstructure evolution of steel being processed in a hot mill to predict its final mechanical properties. The enhanced HSMM was validated using a multitude of samples from several steel companies. Excellent agreement was obtained for tensile strength. To quickly and more reliably measure the alignment and deflection of mine guides used to run skips and cages into a mine shaft. The Problem Conventional mine guide alignment measuring systems require the use of a plumb bob and tape measure. This method is not only laborious, but it is time consuming as well. Approach Aware of the drawbacks of the current measuring method, the Bureau of Mines designed a self-contained instrument system that can accurately perform vertical guide alignment and deflection measurements by remote control. How It Works The Bureau-developed instrumentation system, called the Guide Alignment Measuring System (GAMS), is based on conventional mechanical electronics using inclinometers and displacement transducers. The instrumentation system is attached to an operating skip or cage where it functions as a completely self-contained measurement system, operating in conjunction with nor-mal travel of the skip or cage. An on-board tape recorder or a mini-computer with memory can be used to record all telemetry.

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. This research focuses on enhancing the synergy between blasting and primary crushing operations in quarries. A blast operation at dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal was simulated to fine-tune blasting techniques aimed at optimizing fragmentation indicators. The methodology involves conducting precise blast drill hole surveys, generating detailed terrain 3D models, and integrating these models into blast simulation software to enhance accuracy and optimize production efficiency. The study applies these simulations to test blasts, evaluating improvements in cost-effectiveness, crusher power consumption, and fragmentation efficiency using both aerial and terrestrial image analysis technology. The quarry key performance indicators (KPIs) guide the blast design simulations, ensuring practicality and relevance. The case study blast revealed that implementing optimum blasting techniques can enhance crusher throughput, reduce operational costs, and improve safety. This paper is part one of a three-part technical series where we aim to create a sampling procedure and establish a reliable baseline for the current state of operation. This baseline will be used in subsequent follow-up technical papers to make recommendations and improvements. The outcome of this study provides a framework for quarry operations seeking to enhance their efficiency.

This study aims to enhance the integration between blasting and primary crushing operations in quarrying by optimizing the size of oversize and bypass fragments, ultimately reducing energy consumption. Using simulations of multiple blast rounds at the dstgroup aggregate quarry in Portugal, the research seeks to refine blasting practices and improve crushing efficiency. Part 1 of this study, presented at the International Society of Explosives Engineers' 51st Annual Conference, introduced a baseline framework for assessing the compatibility between blasting outcomes and crusher requirements. This methodology was applied to two blasting rounds, revealing discrepancies between expected and actual fragmentation results. The assessment raised key questions, including the root causes of fragmentation mismatches and the identification of controllable parameters that can be adjusted to align the particle size distribution (PSD) with the crusher’s optimal input range. Based on these findings, six key modifications were proposed to improve blast performance: (1) reducing the drill and blast pattern to limit boulder formation in the overlapping regions of hole influence, (2) increasing both the size and length of stemming material to enhance energy confinement, (3) decreasing subdrill depth to prevent toe burden issues from toe deviation, (4) modifying inter-hole timing to relieve back hole burden, and (5) improving drilling accuracy. Part 2, presented at Fragblast 14, explored advanced modifications to the initial blast design. The first adjustment was reducing subdrill and altering stemming material resulted in an 11% reduction in D80, a 19% decrease in maximum fragment size, and a 21% improvement in blast fragmentation efficiency. These changes shifted the PSD by 15% closer to the crusher compatibility envelope established in Part 1. Despite these improvements, boulder generation persisted in the front and back rows of the blast. This third part of the study focuses on implementing the remaining recommended modifications from Part 1 to further enhance blast efficiency and ensure crusher compatibility. The findings contribute valuable insights into the benefits of integrating blasting and crushing optimization strategies to achieve more consistent and efficient fragmentation outcomes.

"The Nechalacho deposit, located in the Northwest Territories, Canada, is a heavy rare earth element (REE) deposit. The main REE-bearing minerals in the deposit are zircon, allanite, bastnäsite, synchysite, columbite (Fe) and fergusonite. Previous work investigated the use of gravity and magnetic separation in the processing of this ore and showed that coarse particles following grinding were enriched in zircon, suggesting the potential for selective comminution. The current work investigates the possibility to selectively comminute gangue minerals and concentrate REE-bearing zircon into coarser size fractions. The ore was ground wet in a laboratory rod mill for various lengths of time (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 min). The resultant products were analyzed using ICP-MS, to determine the distribution of zirconium and REEs in the different size fractions produced after grinding, and QEMSCAN, to identify mineral phases, mineral liberation and the distribution of minerals. Optimum grind sizes for the upgrading of zircon due to selective comminution were then proposed, and dense medium separation was investigated as a means to further concentrate zircon.It is important to note that this process is not representative of the currently selected process design or recovery for the Nechalacho deposit. Any application of this process to this deposit would require optimization in order to ensure appropriate grade and recovery targets are met.INTRODUCTIONThe rare earth elements (REEs) are the fifteen elements in the lanthanide series of the Periodic Table, as well as yttrium (scandium is excluded in this work). Traditionally, REEs are categorized into two groups: the cerium sub-group of “light” rare earth elements (LREEs); and the yttrium sub-group of “heavy” rare earth elements (HREEs) (Golev et al., 2014). The LREEs comprise the first six lanthanides (lanthanum through samarium) and the HREEs comprise the remaining nine lanthanide elements (europium through lutetium) coupled with yttrium (Golev et al., 2014). HREEs are much less abundant in the earth’s crust and on average are more expensive than LREEs (Seredin, 2010). Of the fifteen REEs, the production of neodymium, europium, terbium, dysprosium and yttrium has been determined to be most critical due to their scarcity, high demand and criticality in many high-technology and clean energy applications, such as in illuminated screens for electronic devices and permanent magnets in wind turbines (Seredin, 2010; U.S. Department of Energy, 2011). "The business performance of mining corporations in South Africa is adversely affected by the constantly increasing electricity costs. The most commonly used power sources are the national utility supplier via a grid connection, and on-site diesel generators. Previous research has identified the renewable sources of solar photovoltaic (PV), onshore wind, and geothermal energy in hybrid versions with current sources as possible opportunities to counteract rising electricity costs. To provide a clear understanding of the new, developing market of renewable energy sources, this research is divided into two papers. This first paper investigates the internal business structure of mining corporations in order to evaluate electricity generating sources. The multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method is selected as the most suitable approach for this. The paper identifies the criteria used by mining corporations to evaluate possible electricity generation sources for self-generation by means of the corporations’ own investment. Four mining corporations with several mining locations were interviewed. The interviews revealed both new and identical evaluation criteria when the findings were compared to earlier MCDA adaptations analysed in the literature review. The second paper (Part 2) combines current knowledge about the external macroeconomic environment with the findings about the internal environment described here. MCDA is adapted in Part 2 and implemented to analyse and compare current to hybrid renewable sources from the perspective of mines. IntroductionMining corporations in South Africa are currently adversely affected by increasing electricity prices. Electricity is supplied mainly by Eskom1 and, especially in remote locations, by on-site diesel generators (Boyse et al., 2014). Electricity price increases, emanating from diesel price hikes and Eskom, have escalated the total operational expenditure on electricity by the largest mining corporations from 8% to 20% of total operating costs in the past seven years (EIUG, 2015). The reliability of electricity supplied by Eskom has decreased drastically (Govender, 2008), and the prices will increase annually by at least 13% until 2018 (Numbi et al., 2014; Eskom, 2015b). In addition, the South African government plans to introduce a carbon tax on greenhouse gas emissions (Alton et al., 2014)."

Historically, the control of flotation operations has been viewed by many as an art. Only recently has process measurement and control come to be viewed not as an ?art? but as a very complex and productive science. In recent years, process control applications to flotation plants have been established and already some gains have been reported for several industrial operations using individual stabilizing control loops including level, pulp flow, pulp density, reagent addition rate and pH (Paakinen, 1979; Hales, 1985). The use of process control computers combined with on-line x-ray florescence (XRF) in industrial flotation circuits has made the application of more sophisticated control techniques feasible in the mineral recovery process. In spite of the availability of reliable instrumentation in modern flotation plants, satisfactory control strategies are difficult to develop and implement. Extremely important factors such as changes in ore type, liberation characteristics, flotability, degree of oxidation on particle surfaces, and specific gravity constitute unmeasured disturbances to the process. Most current control systems cannot adapt specifically to such disturbances.

Crude oil, as a central commercial commodity, is tied to major economic activities in all nations. Also its price fluctuation plays a significant role in global political and economic situation, as a change in the price invariably affects the cost of other goods and services. Therefore reliable forecasts of the price of oil are interest for a wide range of applications. Several approaches have been proposed over the past few years. These may divide into three categories; artificial intelligent, statistical techniques and hybrid methods. The neuro-fuzzy is one of the sub divisions of hybrid method, containing neural network and fuzzy techniques. In this paper a novel forecasting model based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference (ANFIS) is proposed to predict monthly crude oil price. To be able to train and test the model, the statistical data from 1990 to 2010, was obtained from West Texas Intermediate oil prices. The results are compared with a multi criteria regression analysis, it is demonstrated that the neuro-fuzzy lead an accurate and more promising forecast.

"A study of model rectangular mine shafts has been made in the wind tunnel, with the aim of reducing air-flow resistance elements to a practicable minimum. An analysis of Table 7 shows an indicated average decrease in resistance of 28 per cent by adopting the over-all modifications involved in the configurations actually tested. Much greater reductions (up to 68 per cent) are indicated by extrapolating beyond the test results directly achieved. Intermediate partial reductions in aerodynamic resistance are shown for individual modifications, such as: (1) about 3 per cent for locating the lagging in the No. 4 (inside flush) position as against the No. 1 position - 8 per cent as against the No. 2 position - and 23 per cent as compared with position No. 3; (2) about 12 per cent for using lagging instead of steel meshwork along the divider separating the skipway from the service compartment; (3) about 14 per cent for using steel gridwork ladder stagings at 3-set intervals instead of similarly spaced wooden stagings; (4) about 12 per cent for using steel gridwork ladder stagings at 3-set instead of at 1-set intervals; (5) about 13 per cent for fitting a streamlined fairing (see Fig. 5) to the upstream face of the skipway divider. Contrary to expectations, an advantage of only 3 per cent is indicated for lagging in the inside flush (No. 4) position over the outside position (No. 1). This slight gain does not appear to warrant the cost of moving the lagging. However, if the lagging is already in the No. 2 or No. 3 position, there is an 8 and 23 per cent advantage respectively."

"In modern blasting technology blasts are designed and analysed on an energy-mass-time relationship. The energy of the explosive is derived by computer analysis and the work potential of the available energy is expressed in numerical values. The mass involved in the blast is determined by the geometry of the blast and by the rock density. Time is also a relevant parameter, because time is required to complete the three basic stages of the breakage process.For successful application of the blasting parameters the basic mechanism of the breakage process must be understood.The physical-mechanical properties of the rock, local structural geology and the thermodynamic properties of the explosives can be brought together to create a computer model of a blast with which it is possible to predict separately the results of each parameter and to express the predicted degree of change in any parameter by actual numbers.A long-range project has started to create a ""bank"" of rock properties for as many Canadian and foreign mines as possible. A computer model has been successfully applied to predicting the effect of varying the ratio of spacing to burden at constant rock volume and significantly improved results are achieved, as the S/B ratio is increased up to about 2 to 2.5.High-speed photography has been applied to determine the time that has elapsed between zero time and the beginning of movement of the mass. The results assist in determining minimum and optimum delay time required for multiple-row blasting.The approach as described in the paper is now well proven and is clearly superior to previous methods based on powder factors and human assessment."

The rapid socio-economic growth of Hanoi City coincides with a corresponding growth of the transport demand. Today, the transport in Hanoi is completely dependent on private modes of transport. Because of the lack of an efficient public transport system and the expected rapid increase in traffic volumes, the movement of people and goods in the urban areas of Hanoi will cause congestion in the present city transport network. The solution of the construction of new roads, or the widening of the existing streets, is very expensive in urban areas and usually causes many social problems due to the resettlement of people. From the point of view of the number of inhabitants, Hanoi City is now over one million. Above this number the international experience shows that the public transportation must be a mass transport system with large capacity, commercial speed and also independent as much as possible from the street network. According to the Hanoi Master Plan for 2020, the Hanoi urban population will be over 3.5 million persons. Also, in the next 15 years, the distances between centre-destination points will be doubled by comparison to 1995.

A modified cast-on method has been developed to reinforce aluminum castings with steel insert. Defect-free bond between the steel insert and the aluminum casting has been consistently obtained. Data obtained from a push-out experiment indicated that the bond strength was much higher than that obtained using the Al-Fin approach. This paper introduces this modified method in four sections: the coating of the steel pins, the cast-in method, microstructure characterization, and the bond strength. The section on the coating of the steel pins contains coating material selection, electro-plating technique for plating Cu and Ni on steel, and diffusion bonding of the coatings to the steel. The section on cast-in method deals with factors that affecting the quality of the metallurgical bond between the coated steel and the aluminum castings. The results of microstructure characteristics of the bonding are presented in the microstructure characterization section. A push-out experiment and the results obtained using this method is described in the section of bond strength/mechanical property.

"The size distribution of the muckpile formed as a result of open pit blasting operations has a considerable effect on the efficiency of loading, hauling, and crushing. Various researchers have developed specialized computer software that uses image analysis methods for determining the size distribution of the muckpile. However, these methods have some limitations. One of the most important of these limitations is that the very fine fragments in the muckpile cannot be used in the size distribution calculation. In this study, 18 test blasts in total were carried out in two limestone quarries belonging to Batiçim Corp. in Izmir, Turkey. A new model was developed in order to ensure that very fine fragments are used in the size distribution calculation. The size distributions of the test blasts were calculated by both the Wipfrag computer program and the new model. Correlations were established between the muckpile size distributions determined by both methods and the parameters determining the efficiency of the loader. IntroductionThe size distribution of the muckpile formed as a result of open pit blasting operations has a considerable effect on the efficiency of loading, hauling, and crushing. Various researchers have established certain correlations for predicting the efficiency of the operations according to the muckpile size distribution so that production can be carried out economically (Tunstall and Bearman, 1997; Nielsen and Kristiansen, 1996; Workman and Eloranta, 2004; Michaud and Blanchet, 1996; Frimpong, Kabongo, and Davies, 1996; Osanloo and Hekmat, 2005; Molotilov et al., 2010). In these studies, the 50% passing size (X50) is generally used. These methods rely on the correct measurement of the size distribution of the muckpile formed by the blast. The most reliable measurement method would be to subject the entire muckpile to a sieve analysis, but this is obviously impracticable. Therefore, computational method based on image analysis have been developed. These include IPACS (Dahlhielm, 1996), Tucips (Havermann and Vogt, 1996), Fragscan (Schleifer and Tessier, 1996), Cias (Downs and Kettunen, 1996), GoldSize (Kleine annd Cameron, 1996), Wipfrag (Maerz, Palangio, and Franklin, 1996), Split Desktop (Kemeny, 1994), PowerSieve (Chung and Noy, 1996), and Fragalyst (Raina et al., 2002). In these methods, the size limits of the fragments forming the material are determined by image analysis on photographs of the muckpile. However, the computer software has some limitations. It does not take into account the third dimension of the muckpile, nor the size distribution of very fine fragments. In particular, the fragment size ranges below 2.5 to 3 cm cannot be determined, and therefore these cannot be included in the muckpile size distribution. However, the muckpile formed by a bench blast contains a wide range of particle sizes (Tosun et al., 2015)."

The combination of new tools with a more rigorous approach to understanding the interaction of mill liners with overall mill performance and economics, forms the basis of an integrated approach to liner management. Based on accurate liner wear measurements, some (limited) physical mill inspections and surveys, accurate calibration of the mill load and analysis of process data, a whole new approach to liner selection, relining intervals and mill control is proposed. Collection and analysis of this information in operating mills illustrates the mill performance improvement which can be attained through this careful measurement and modelling approach.A more holistic approach to liner management is proposed, including a broadening of the current work to cover the potential benefits of improved relining technologies and predictive liner wear modelling. "A moveable flotation miniplant was designed and constructed at the research laboratory of Inco Technical Services Ltd. to address the need for flowsheet development with a limited amount of ore (such as drill cores). It consists of one rod mill, two regrind ball mills, one vibratory screen, 24 flotation cells of various sizes and two Venturi aerated flotation columns. The setup has continuous monitoring capability for pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity and temperature in conditioning tanks and flotation cells. Various options regarding flotation reagents, circuit configurations, and fineness of primary grind and regrind can be readily evaluated. The throughput of the miniplant is 20 – 30 kg/hour ore.Unit operations such as flash flotation, magnetic separation and gravity concentration can also be evaluated as an integral part of an entire flowsheet development.This communication describes the basic design features of the miniplant and some examples of applications are given.INTRODUCTIONInco operates numerous mines in Sudbury and Thompson and will shortly bring the Voisey’s Bay mine into production. It has long been recognized that the ores from different mines or from different depths of the same mine can give different responses in flotation. There is a growing need to properly evaluate the ores before feeding the mill to maximize the return of the mine/mill operation. Inco Technical Services Limited at Sheridan Park, Mississauga, Ontario has developed a batch laboratory procedure to address this issue. The results are considered in the overall economical assessment of new mine operations.For ores that cannot be processed by the existing mill operations or that will be processed by a new mill, it is necessary to develop a flowsheet that can maximize the economical return of the mine/mill operation. While recognizing the importance and contribution of the laboratory batch flotation procedure, it does not generate reliable data for flowsheet simulation and design. A full-scale pilot plant campaign is normally required to obtain the design data but often this is not possible due to a limited amount of ore obtainable from the drill core. A small-scale pilot plant (mini pilot plant or miniplant) capable of processing 20-30 kg/h ore can provide this data prior to a full-scale pilot plant campaign. A miniplant can also be used to optimize the circuit configurations, reagent additions and recycle options of process water before pilot plant work and can be used to test a different flowsheet configuration for an existing mill before re-piping a plant circuit."

This research developed and simulated a novel multi-indicator Fatigue Detection and Alert System (FDAS) designed to enhance fatigue detection accuracy in mining environments. The system integrates a comprehensive set of inputs: eye blink rate, eye closure duration, yawning frequency, distraction levels, Pre-shift Check-in Scores (Self-report) and Electroencephalography (EEG) Levels. Using MATLAB’s Fuzzy Logic Rule Viewer (FLRV) and Simulink, simulations demonstrated the FDAS’s robust ability to process these diverse physiological and behavioural indicators accurately. It effectively classified operator fatigue into low, moderate, and high fatigue levels, consistently providing appropriate outputs and corresponding intervention recommendations across various mixed-signal scenarios. The system achieved a calculated accuracy of 85.19% across 27 test entries, with a standard deviation of approximately 1.8459, confirming its reliability for real-time fatigue monitoring. These findings highlight the significant potential of this fuzzy logicbased approach to proactively identify early signs of fatigue, substantially enhancing safety and operational efficiency in demanding mining operations.

An important part of planning for the rehabilitation of uranium mine sites is the ability to assess the geomorphic stability of the final landform, over time frames ranging from decades to millenia. Depending on the environmental conditions, erosion features such as gullies may incise into containment structures, potentially leading to the exposure and transport of encapsulated radioactive material. Further, erosion may lead to increased sediment loads and the transport of other mine-related contaminants off-site and into downstream waterways. While erosion may be monitored and assessed over the short term (years to decades), the longer-term behaviour (centuries to millennia) of such landscapes is not within any meaningful human management time frame. Landscape evolution models (LEMs) can provide information on soil erosion rates at decadal or centennial scales over large spatial scales, and evaluate the sensitivity of these processes to environmental changes. However, an important issue associated with the use of models is the ability to assess the reliability and accuracy of the model. In this paper, the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM is tested for its ability to predict soil erosion from a series of 30 m × 30 m experimental plots specifically constructed for this purpose on a trial rehabilitated landform at the Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory, Australia. Model predictions of bedload and suspended sediment loads from the erosion plots were compared with field measured observations collected over four wet seasons from the trial landform. Once calibrated for the specific site hydrological conditions, the predicted sediment yield – specifically, bedload – demonstrated an excellent correspondence with the field data. However, longer-term simulations of ten years identified an exhaustion effect in sediment yield from the landform. "Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri is an underground copper-zinc mine in turkey. The ore is highly variable with feed grades ranging from 1–4 per cent copper and 1–10 per cent zinc. Due to this variability, ore characterisation and blending strategies are crucial for performance optimisation.This paper presents a case study for a multidisciplinary approach to process optimisation, integrating Geometallurgical and advanced control methods to achieve optimised plant performance. The results from comprehensive metallurgical tests and surveys were used to develop a mathematical model utilising SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator® (version number 2.5.24.0). The model was employed to determine the most appropriate operational settings required to ensure that optimised grades and recoveries are achieved for each ore type.SGS’s Modular Expert Technology (MET) expert system was then implemented to target these optimum operational ranges utilising online grade and froth velocity measurements. This paper presents a fragmentation model for large production blasts in an open pit or underground environment. The paper shows that the particle velocity is directly related to pressure, strain, and strain rate and so it can be considered as driving force and mechanism of rock fragmentation. This is supported by the fact that a vibration with a larger peak particle velocity (PPV) generates larger disturbance in rock and so finer fragmentation or more blast damage than a low PPV. The crack distribution in rock from impact is based on findings from previous researchers (Seaman, Curran and Shockey, 1976; Liu and Xu, in press). The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast. The fines and oversized blocks are calculated explicitly – the fines generated close to blastholes and big blocks far from boreholes are modelled naturally. The multiple blasthole fragmentation (MBF) model takes surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary. The MBF can model fragmentation with over one million grid points. Examples of the model’s field comparison are also included.The PPV at a calculation grid is estimated based on the same approach used for the near field non-linear vibration model (Yang and Scovira, 2007). The method is based on the dominant charge for a calculation grid point, non-linear charge weight superposition within a charge and from multiple charges, strain wave broadening, and amplitude attenuation with distance from a charge segment. The blasthole confinement affected by earlier firing charges is also taken into account.The MBF model inputs from blast design, such as: location and orientation of each blasthole, stemming length, blasthole diameter, multiple decking, bench height, initiation sequence, etc. It models the effect of the delay and its scatter in each blasthole on fragmentation and has a statistical modelling capability for geological random variation on attenuation of particle velocity wave. The wave reinforcement due to instantaneous waves arriving or diminishing cooperative contribution due to long delay intervals between charges is also simulated.The results are displayed in 3D volumetric plots, contour of fragmentation in cross-sections, and size passing curves for a whole blast or a region of the blast.CITATION:Yang, R, 2015.
