ABSTRACT The recently introduced concept of negative taxation complicates estimation of the distributable profit of certain South African gold mines, and an assisted mine could operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. A simple diagram is presented from which the approximate working profit or loss, taxation payable or tax credit received, and the distributable profit of an assisted mine can be estimated directly for any combination of the four main variable operational factors: tonnage milled, recovery grade, unit cost and capital expenditure. INTRODUCTION The effects on the working profits of South African Gold mines caused by changes in unit working costs, recovery grade, tonnage milled and capital expenditure are readily estimated. For normal tax- and lease-paying mines the distributable profit is related to the working profit and the latter is a commonly accepted comparative measure of the profitability of an operation. However, the recently introduced concept of State assistance in the form of negative taxation1, i.e. a tax credit, for mines with a life of less than eight years complicates such estimates. A requirement of State assistance is that an assisted mine must lower its normal pay limit by 16 to 20 per cent, and it will be possible for a mine to operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. In the case of an assisted mine it is therefore necessary for management to judge the effects of changes in unit costs, grade, etc., in terms of distributable profit instead of working profit. This will require repeated calculation of tax to be paid or tax credits that will be received under the numerous possible combinations of the four main variable factors. However, with the aid of the diagram illustrated in Fig. 1, it is possible to assess at a glance the practical effect of these variables on the distributable profit of an operation not subject to tax on the normal formula, or small mine formula, with sufficient accuracy to decide whether a detailed analysis is required. USE OF THE DIAGRAM From the central point 'X' in Fig. 1, a range of tonnages milled per annum has been plotted along the north-bearing axis, a series of costs per ton milled in the northwestern quadrant, recovery grades in the northeastern quadrant, and capital expenditures in the southwestern quadrant. Starting from the tonnage milled per annum, a line is drawn east and west across the two northern quadrants up to the points where it reaches the desired cost- and grade-lines. From these points two north-south lines are drawn into the southern quadrants. A further line is drawn to the east from the point where the western north-south line crosses the desired capital expenditure. It is said that Thales of Miletus, 600 B.C.,1 was aware of the attraction of lodestone toward iron and highly magnetic minerals. However, the birth of magnetic concentration followed shortly after the invention of the first electromagnet by Sturgeon in 1825. Sturgeon's magnet was described in the annals of electricity.2 The first attempts to concentrate minerals by the use of magnets date back to about 18473 but the first commercial drum-concentrator was apparently invented by R. Cook in 1849. Credit must also be given to the invention of P. Righter's machine in 1867,5 and to the highly successful Wenström separator devised in Sweden in 1883.8 Since the advent of these early separators there have been virtually hundreds of patents granted covering minor modifications of drum-type magnetic separators. The more important advances from a technological viewpoint have been the design of stable power supplies for d.c. magnets, the advent of ceramic permanent magnets which are now replacing electromagnets for the concentration of ferromagnetic minerals, and advances in general magnet and machine configurations.7 One of the problems facing both the designer and the user of magnetic separators is the evaluation of the body forces acting on particles in the magnetic field of the separator. Perhaps the most elegant method of evaluating the body force associated with a drum-type magnetic separator is that recently suggested by W. F. Brown.8 Brown measures the radial component of the field intensity one-half inch from the drum surface and fits a Fourier series in the angle about the drum axis (Figure 1). "A fast, reliable and accurate method for radium-226 determination in environmental water samples has been devised, using an alpha spectroscopic technique. The correlation between barium-133 and radium-226 in the barium-radium sulphate precipitation mechanism was studied and in the limited experimental recovery range, the coefficient of correlation was r = 0.986. A self-absorption study for various barium carrier concentrations was also undertaken to obtain the least broadening of alpha energy line widths. An optimum value of 0.3 mg barium carrier was obtained for chemical recovery in the range of 85%.IntroductionWith the increase in uranium mining activities, the migration and spread of radioactivity via various environmental pathways is of great concern. Because of its inherent biological hazard and relatively long half-life, (approximately 1620 years), raidum-226 is frequently monitored as a measure of radioactive contamination of the environment. It is, therefore, necessary to modify existing methods for rapid determination of radium-226 in environmental samples for quick corrective measures in the event of seepage, dam leakage or discharge violations."

Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the US mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the available research literature is timely. This paper describes a rapid review that identifies, characterizes, and classifies the research literature to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a Technology Readiness Assessment. Systematic search methods were applied to three electronic databases, and relevant articles were identified through the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sixty-four articles from 2000 to 2020 met these criteria and were categorized into seven CXS technology categories. Review and assessment of the articles indicates that much of the literature-based evidence for CXS technology lies within lower levels of maturity (i.e., components and prototypes tested under laboratory conditions and in relevant environments). However, less evidence exists for CXS technology at higher levels of maturity (i.e., complete systems evaluated within operational environments) despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for systematic peer-reviewed research to evaluate the performance of CXS technologies and demonstrate the efficacy of prototypes or commercial products, which could be fostered by more collaboration between academia, research institutions, manufacturers, and mining companies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions. However, this contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate that most haul truck fatal accidents are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions (e.g., traveling through a berm). Lastly, the relatively small amount of literature and segmented nature of the included studies suggests that there is a need for incremental progress or more stepwise research that would facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies over time. This progression over time could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

Steady-state flowsheet simulators for mineral processing plants have evolved to a current high level of utility and accuracy. Reliable, general-purpose, semi-empirical models now exist in nearly all unit operations categories particularly in the areas of comminution and classification. .These models, installed as user-selectable functions within the integrated frame- work of flowsheet balance-solver software systems, can be strung together to represent any plant configuration. In addition, CAD-like graphics, data reconciliation and model parameterization functions have become standard features of the current generation of integrated plant simulators. These advances have given engineers the capability to investigate many different plant scenarios while requiring a minimum of actual plant testwork. This paper describes a methodology and an integrated software package which are being successfully applied in a number of operating plants worldwide to predict plant performance under changing conditions. Those conditions which can be changed include effect-of ore type, feed size, water addition rates, equipment geometries and flowsheet modifications. By using data from actual plant optimization exercises in real mills, the paper illustrates and out- lines a technique which includes plant data collection, ore breakage testing, flowsheet simulation, model-fitting (parameterization), data adjustment and model experimentation. Brief descriptions of some unit operations models, such as autogenous mills and cyclones, are provided as examples of the current state of such models. Ore breakage testing and its relation to certain models is also discussed. Computer- generated size-distribution graphs, along with tabular data generated by the simulator, round out the presentation and serve to demonstrate the real- ism and accuracy of the models. The paper concludes with a partial list of cases where this technology has been successfully applied.

Potential applications for boom tunnelling machines requires reliable assessment of in-situ performance. The majority of existing classification schemes concentrate on the prediction of excavation rate, neglecting the important influence of tool consumption rates. A statistical approach is taken to the analysis of the performance data, which was obtained first-hand through in-situ monitoring, and laboratory testing of representative rock samples. A statistical discrimination technique is used to produce a scheme for the prediction of performance groups, each of which covers a limited range of cutting rate and/or tool consumption rate.

Iv all new movements unavoidable misapprehensions arise, which should be cleared away, lest they retard the progress of the movement itself. An impression has gone abroad that the movement for conservation of resources is a new movement. No one knows better than the engineer that this is not the case. Men like Douglas and Raymond and John Fritz and Edison and McDonald, and hosts of others, have preached and practiced conservation as applied to mineral resources throughout a long and useful life-time; and, in general, the work of the engineer and the chemist, both in this and in other countries, has been along the line of continually greater efficiency in the use of all available materials. And the results already accomplished through the efforts of these experts are now saving annually many millions of dollars to the people of the United States in materials and labor. It is true, however, that the need for conservation, that is, for a wiser and more efficient use of the natural resources, has taken on a new life, and is being brought home to the people of the United States in a manner which is awakening public interest and even the public conscience. It is, therefore, both appropriate and fortunate that the engineers, the chemists, and the thinking men of all classes are availing themselves of the present impetus to the movement to emphasize anew the lessons which heretofore they have found it more difficult to impress upon the American public or even upon the captains of industry. Floor heave can be a major problem in large open pit mines. Unrestrained floor heave can lead to flooding, equipment destruction, slope instability and subsidence. It is particularly troublesome in coal mines where the floor is frequently relatively flat, and is often underlain by major water Searing units. This paper examines methods of analysis used in computing floor stability, and sets out a simple rational method of evaluating the required level of water pressure control to maintain acceptable floor stability. The approach is illustrated by reference to the stability of the floor of the Morwell open cut lignite project in Southeast Australia, where this approach has been used successfully for over a decade.

"From1927 to1989, the Hornemineproduced53.7 Mt of ore grading 6.1 g/t Au and 2.2% Cu from two large volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits composed primarily of pyrrhotite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. The ore bodies were hosted by a package of chlorite-sericitealtered epiclastic rhyolite tuffs which were deposited in a narrow palaeo-graben located on the flank of a major felsic volcanic centre. M ineralizingfluids percolated upward through the permeable footwall rocks and were further focussed along syn-volcanic, graben-bounding faults. Sulphides were deposited by a process of sub-seafloor replacement of the rhyolite tuffs.Gold-copper-(zinc) mineralization, including ore zones mined between 1985 and 1989 as the REMNOR ore zones, is present throughout the 900 m of felsic volcanic stratigraphy at the Horne. All the deposits were formed by syn-volcanic hydrothermal processes active during felsic volcanism. The use of CR-39 plastic polymer as a solid state nuclear track detector in the textural analysis of radioactive minerals in geological samples was first described by I.R Basham in 1981. CR-39 autoradiographs provide a detailed, high-resolution image of the in situ distribution of the radioactive minerals within geological samples on both the macroscopic and microscopic scales. This technique is an inexpensive and effective means of obtaining detailed textural information that provides insight into the style of mineralization, its relationship to primary and secondary structures in the host rock, and its association with particular geological features or mineral phases. Although this technique does not provide any information on the identity of the minerals responsible for the radioactivity, the resultant autoradiographs can be used to select regions for further detailed analysis such as petrography, microprobe analysis, or SEM imaging. This paper summarizes the procedure and outlines the appropriate time and materials required for both the exposure and etching of the CR-39 with respect to the intensity of the radioactivity emitted by the geological samples.

"The SART Process was introduced to the gold mining industry in the late 1990s and several commercial plants were built over the following 10 to 15 years. Most of these plants have operated well and enjoyed plant performance in line with expectations based on the underlying chemistry of the process. However, two of the plants have consistently suffered from high reagent consumption and poor product quality, which has motivated a re-examination of the process fundamentals in the hope of understanding the reasons for poor performance when it occurs, and developing mitigating strategies.This testwork along with a review of the relevant literature has demonstrated that the amount of sulphide added to the primary reactor, relative to the copper concentration, is the most critical parameter dictating plant performance, with pH and residence time important secondary factors. The primary product in the SART Process is synthetic chalcocite, Cu2S, and the stoichiometric requirement for sulphide addition is therefore 0.5 moles per mole of copper in solution. Testwork shows that when sulphide is added in excess of this amount (generally with the express purpose of lowering residual copper in solution) it not only fails in its intended purpose, but can have a negative impact on the settling and filtration characteristics of the copper sulphide product, as well as the final product quality. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated the higher the selected operating pH in the pH 3 to 5 range, and the longer the residence time of slurry in this pH range.Freshly precipitated copper sulphide compounds are known to be very fine and slimy, with poor settling and filtration characteristics. It is therefore important to engineer the SART Process in such a way as to encourage growth in the average particle size of the precipitate crystals. This was the rationale for recycling a portion of the thickener underflow to the primary reactor when the SART Process was developed. The theory of crystallization predicts that compounds of extremely low solubility, such as chalcocite (Cu2S: KSP = 10-48), are likely to experience growth in crystal particle size through aggregation rather than heterogeneous nucleation. On this basis, the SART practice of recycling a portion of thickener underflow to the primary reactor in the commercial plants is unlikely to lead to crystal growth via nucleation, and could in fact promote breakage of the aggregates that formed in the thickener. Recycling thickener underflow could therefore have the opposite of the desired outcome. The result of testwork that is reported here lends credence to this theory and questions the wisdom of recycling in the SART process.There is evidence to suggest that operating the copper sulphide thickener in the SART Process without flocculants may be beneficial. Thickener underflow densities could improve from the current 10 - 15% range to 40 - 50%. This will not only reduce the flowrate of slurry to the filter, but the filtration properties of the slurry (filtration rate, filter cake moisture content) will also improve. This is one of the most critical engineering and design aspects of the SART Process, and the achievement of high solids density in the thickener underflow will not only improve the health and safety aspects of the operation, but also has the potential to lower capital costs and improve the quality of the final product."

The Burra Burra Mine is situated in complexly folded Torrensian dolomites and limestones forming the faulted axial region of a major anticline. The orebody mined was largely of secondary origin and confined between two faults, Kingston's on the west and Tinline's on the east. The orebody occurred at the junction between cherty dolomites and a clastic limestone with a large mass of marble breccia along its western margin. Secondary ore consisted of carbonates and oxides in the breccia and the ore bed and detrital copper minerals deposited as part of a clastic breccia in sinkholes and solution cavities in the dolomites and ore beds.Primary sulphides occur disseminated in the marble breccia and in stratiform habit in the ore bed. Kingston's so-called "lode" may be mineralized marble breccia.The marble breccia appears to be of diapiric or sedimentary origin and there is evidence to support a sedimentary origin for some of the copper sulphides. No igneous rocks have been discovered within 20 miles of the mine and any hydrothermal activities were probably at comparatively low temperature. The possibility of extensive stratiform and disseminated copper sulphide mineralization in the marble breccia and ore bed requires testing by further drilling and geophysical surveys.INTRODUCTIONThe re-interpretation of Burra Burra geology and ore formation discussed in this paper resulted from a comprehensive investigation of the mine and its surrounding district begun in December 1961 and in progress at the time of writing. (February 1963). The decision to investigate Burra Burra was taken after a thorough examination of records and reports of all non-ferrous metal deposits throughout South Australia and was given impetus by a report by Thomson (1963) suggesting a sedimentary origin for the copper mineralization. Although the author does not concur fully with Thomson's interpretation there is no doubt that sedimentary processes have played an important part in the formation of the Burra Burra copper deposit, nor is there any doubt that igneous activity played no part.

Acid mine drainage is a major environmental problem worldwide. A key to remediating this problem is understanding the rate and mechanisms of the complex, multistep pyrite oxidation reaction under geologically relevant conditions. Because many waste piles are not submerged, a large amount of pyrite oxidation actually occurs in air. We have designed a Barcroft-manometer reactor to measure the rate of pyrite oxidation in air as a function of relative humidity and oxygen partial pressure. The reactor consists of two chambers joined by a manometer. Each experiment occurs at constant temperature, initial oxygen partial pressure, and relative humidity, although these variable can be changed between runs. Oxygen consumption was measured and pyrite oxidation rates were calculated from those data. Initial data indicate that rate of pyrite oxidation by oxygen in humid air is much faster than the rate of oxidation by oxygen in solution. The rates determined by this study can be used to develop better remediation techniques for acidic mine waters.

Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require more complex risk evaluation models that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, and production rates, among many other). In this context, real option valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed that successfully quantifies the risk associated with dilution, as a function of production rate. This model is then validated in a case study on the Chuquicamata Underground Mine project. Keywords real options, risk management, risk quantification, dilution, minine planning.

Companies have installed powerful desktops for their personnel and instrumentation and control systems in their plants. These desktops are, in many cases, connected to a company intranet. Still, process engineers have to obtain their data manually. Engineers use process calculations from manually calculated averages from the plant; field operators collect equipment data on log sheets; and maintenance engineers collect critical information on log sheets. All of this information resides in individual machines. What are the strategic tools that will enable collaboration between them? How can operators, engineers, and managers access plant information to proactively increase their effectiveness in process troubleshooting, plant debottleneclung, aligning with business strategic and customer demand, satisfying environmental and safety regulations, developing capital projects, and implementing control strategies? A nonintrusive environment at the desktop is required to provide the process information to these workers. How can value be added to MS Windows technologies with the legacy systems at a minimum cost? There is no straight answer; however, there is a proven framework to leverage the large investments in new technologies. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Three examples will be described to demonstrate paradigm change. Today, process engineers can access data at the required level of detail for analysis of critical process variables at their desk or remotely. 1. Process Troubleshooting and Analysis: The engineer can develop an inferential calculation, trigger a process advisor to deter- mine the behavior of the units for the last day, and get the population of a set of batches (heats, blocks, rolls, sheets, etc). 2. Process Control and Optimization: The engineer can connect to a process simulator at steady state or a dynamic simulator of the process to evaluate new control strategies or process unit line-ups and use the process simulator as a process observer for fault diagnosis. 3. Collaboration with Accounting and Maintenance: The engineer can review reconciled data and the process mass balances, suggest maintenance cleaning or recalibration of flowmeters, and evaluate key control performance of all advanced controls.

Recent significant advances in the Global Positioning System (GPS) have contributed to making real-time kinematic/dynamic process for decimetre to centimetre-level positioning more reliable and ready for the production-use. As a result of research and development efforts in this area, a robust real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS positioning prototype system has been established at QUT for both scientific and engineering purposes. This system is finding applications in a wide range of automobile robots or automatic guidance vehicle systems. This paper first summarises the theoretical basis necessary for centimetre real-time kinematic positioning, then gives a brief description for the real-time dynamic GPS system developed at QUT. The paper summarises the results of a designed vehicle tracking test. The results demonstrated that the differences between RTK filtering solutions and OTF solutions are in the order of magnitude of about 20 centimetres and the accuracy of OTF solutions are in the levels of two centimetres. This confirms that the RTK system delivers three-dimensional position with decimetre-to-centimetre accuracy. This particular RTK processing system is robust and reliable, although the system is referred to as a prototype and will be further developed.

Because of the risk of corrosion caused by stray currents, steel foundations and steel sheet piling are generally prohibited in the vicinity of railway structures. Steel solutions are only accepted if they are shown to meet the required design working life and if this can be achieved at an acceptable cost compared to competing materials. The influence of stray currents on various steel sheet piling designs was studied using software initially dedicated to gas and pipeline industries and cathodic protection systems. It has been successfully adapted to model stray currents affecting steel sheet piling. Corrosion rates assessed using this modeling software were considerably lower than commonly expected. Zones of potential corrosion risk were identified; specific cost-effective countermeasures could be established. The developed software tool can help to optimize the design of piling solutions in the vicinity of DC railway power systems in terms of suitable countermeasures that meet structural reliability and cost requirements.

Traditionally gold producers had built up hedge books to protect themselves against adverse changes in the commodity price, but diversified mining groups were staunchly opposed to hedging in any shape or form. The situation has evolved over the past few years. Gold miners have been reducing the size of their hedge books in line with the rising gold price. Commentators have talked about ædouble-digit dehedgingÆ and have suggested that this is the final countdown for gold hedge books. It sounded as if the era of hedging by mining companies was drawing to a close. But as appearances can sometimes be misleading, we decided to find out what mining companies were actually doing. Companies listed on stock exchanges are now obliged to give details of their derivatives holdings in their annual reports. Two or three years ago there was no such obligation. Our reality check was based on the latest annual report issued by three multinational mining groups; two with diametrically opposed views on hedging (Rio Tinto and Barrick) and the third (BHP Billiton) with an intermediate position. This snapshot of their derivative positions at a point in time revealed that Barrick and BHP Billiton have substantial derivatives positions (worth billions of dollars) to protect against adverse changes in foreign exchange rates and interest rates. Moreover Barrick has recently started hedging against increases in fuel prices. Despite its opposition to hedging, Rio Tinto has derivative positions worth several hundred million dollars, but these are primarily a legacy from various mergers and acquisitions over recent years or were entered into as a condition of project financing. Lastly we were surprised to discover that Barrick was holding asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP). So the idea that mining companies donÆt hedge their risks is just another urban myth.

"Recently detailed fragmentation data from blasts fired with electronic delay detonators (EDDs) in the Red Dog mine in Alaska were presented. They include a comparison with pyrotechnic detonators fordifferent in-­-row delays in a standard pattern and EDDs in an expanded pattern. Fragmentation was measured on the belt after the primary crusher. The Rosin-­-Rammler function (RR, two parameters) was used to describe the crusher product. This was combined with the JK SimMet crusher model and the CZM blast model (Crushed Zone Model, three to five parameters) to estimate a reasonable crusher feed (muck pile fragmentation or run of mine, ROM) for each fitted product. In this way the effect of delay timing and electronic detonators on the median fragment size x50 and uniformity coefficient n for both crusher product and the blasted rock was determined. "

This work is a continuation of previous work in which the crusher output was found to be better described by the three-parameter Swebrec function than by the Rosin-Rammler function. For a crusher model, the x50 variable sufficed to describe changing crusher input while b and xmax could be considered fixed. For the crusher output from aggregated stockpile rock, as measured by digital image analysis using Split-Online, the constancy of b was not as apparent. In this paper detailed stockpile data, single Split data series, and sieved belt cuts of crusher product are analyzed using the Swebrec and truncated Rosin-Rammler functions. The variability of b is confirmed. By using specific fraction passing sizes a shortcut is presented that removes the need to do curve fitting to determine the three Swebrec function parameters.
