A blasting improvement program began in 1985 at two traprock quarries in Connecticut to reduce the levels of ground motions and airblast measured at residential structures surrounding the operations. The quarries are situated within town limits, adjacent to a number of historical and other structures. Although blasting vibration amplitudes were found to be far below those that could produce cosmetic defects in structures, they were perceived to be the cause of structural defects observed by homeowners. Based on a comprehensive * review of blasting practices in place during1985, an extensive vibration monitoring program was implemented. The initial study included the instrumentation of selected residential structures to record and analyze strains imposed within structures from quarry blasting, environmental changes, and from daily household activities. A comparison of the results was made with the results reported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1980. The highest strain imposed in drywall from blasting (13 J_I strain) was 12% and 1% of the highest strain levels recorded for normal household activities and temperature changes, respectively. The present philosophy in production blasting is to attempt to keep vibration amplitudes as low as practical by implementing state-of-art blasting control techniques. Currently, blasting seismographs are placed in a circular manner around each quarry, providing production blast vibration records for 360 degrees of coverage at distances of 2500 to 4000 ft. from blasting operations. Seismograph and production blast records are analyzed each year and become part of a Blasting Improvement Plan submitted to the local zoning commission as part of the annual operating permit process. This paper summarizes the results of previous vibration monitoring programs and outlines the modifications made to blasting practices to minimize the levels of ground motions and airblasts. The public relations efforts and standard corporate procedures used by company personnel to address all blast related complaints and alleged damage claims since 1985 are also discussed.

During the early 1960s, the advent of self- advancing longwall roof supports triggered serious consideration by Bethlehem management to introduce the technique of longwall mining at one of our central Pennsylvania coal mines. Although longwall mining was initially justified as a means to cope with the severe roof conditions at our Mine 32 (Watson, B., 1971), the result of the endeavor has been a consistent and reliable level of coal production, first from Mine 32 and then later from Mine 33, over a period of fifteen years. Longwall production from the Cambria Division has been the mainstay of the low volatile coal required by Bethlehem Steel for steel production. Let us review the events that led to this accomplishment, as well as where we stand today.

"Over the last 50 years there has been a dramatic evolution in the metallurgical engineering field in Canada. In the 60s the field was dominated by large American and UK groups, often selling major process and equipment packages. The local content was limited to wrap around facilities and the civil and structural work. The mining and metallurgical companies had strong internal teams to lead these projects. Over the decades and business down cycles the large foreign contractors disappeared or re-structured and the mining companies largely shed their engineering and project management groups. The resulting gap was filled by a cadre of local specialist engineering companies, some of whom have grown to be world leaders in the field. The paper traces this evolution and examines the underlying causes and consequences."

Research thrives on ideas, and the theoretical considerations of today are either the discarded notions or the proven facts of tomorrow. The progress made in the past fifty years in the acquisition of knowledge of petroleum geology is no less astounding than is the tremendous increase in the production of oil on the North American continent from 61 million barrels in 1897 to 1,917 million barrels in 1947, an increase of 3,300 per cent, with production of natural gas expanding from less than 400,000 Mcf in 1897 to approximately 4,500,000,000 Mcf, or an increase of 11,000 fold in the same period. In the search for and discovery of the oil and gas fields that have yielded such prolific wealth, no idea has had a more profound effect than has the ?anticlinal? theory of oil accumulation, propounded in 1844 by Sir William Logan, the founder of the Geological Survey of Canada, after noting the position of oil seepages on the crests of anticlines in Gaspe peninsula. Sir William apparently was not much impressed with his own idea at this time, but after the Drake well discovery in 1859 and the publication by Henry D. Rogers, of Glasgow University, formerly of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, of a paper in which he pointed out that the seepages in Pennsylvania were on anticlines, T. Sterry Hunt, an associate of Sir William Logan on the Geological Survey of Canada, published a reasonably comprehensive statement of the anticlina theory in the Montreal Gazette on March 1st, 1861. Hunt recognized the fact that the oil ?being lighter than the water which everywhere penetrates the rocks below the water level, naturally rises and accumulates along the crown of these anticlines". This was a recognition of the fact that gas, oil, and water in an anticlinal structure separate according to buoyancy or specific gravity. For some years the anticlinal theory does not seem to have attracted much attention, but when I. C. White in 1883 revived it and put it to practical use by prospecting for 'anticlinal' oil an gas structures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, its real value not as a theory but as a fact became widely recognized. Even today, the search for anticlines as oil and gas structures is being vigorously continued. In the past fifty years, however, it has become widely recognized that petroleum and natural gas collect in many different types of structures, and these have become known by the general name of 'traps'. About 1890, terrace structures were highly regarded because it was thought certain oil fields in Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio were directly related to them. However, as Wilson (2, p. 437) has pointed out, it is recognized to day that ?'wherever the surface evidence is complete and dependable, other factors (than the terrace structure) are found to be in control'.

Pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations have been in commercial use at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery of Sherritt International Corporation for fifty years. This paper traces the history of Sherritt from its origins in northern Manitoba, and the development of the first hydrometallurgical nickel-cobalt refinery in 1954, utilizing pressure hydrometallurgy, to the modern day refinery. Sherritt's involvement with pressure hydrometallurgy during the past 50 years has included the operation of the refinery, the development and licensing of technology, incorporating pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations, to more than 30 companies worldwide, the joint venture at Moa, Cuba involving both leaching and precipitation at elevated temperature and pressure, and the production of specialty metal powders. Developments in each of these areas are reviewed.

At this 5th U.S. Mine Ventilation Symposium I would like to focus your attention on safety and the contribution of the ventilation engineer over the past 50 years. This conference affords us the opportunity to express, to listen, and to learn. As ventilation engineers it is indeed an exciting time--a time that not only stimulates our imagination but also pin points our aims in our quest to obtain zero fatalities by the year 2000, the goal expressed by William J. Tattersall, Assistant Secretary of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration. In the past, coal mine ventilation has often been unfortunately synonymous with explosions and resulting fires. Those not familiar with us do not recognize the painful evolution of the coal mining industry and particularly the evolution of mine ventilation. To put my presentation into perspective, I recently reviewed a U.S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 586 - "Historical Summary of Coal-Mine Explosions in the United States 1810 - 1958 prepared by H. B. Humphrey Mining Health and Safety Engineer. This bulletin was published in 1960. Mr. Humphrey stated "In 1946, factors contributing to the explosions occurring from 1941 to 1945 were: (1) The rapid increase in the use of electrical equipment at face regions where gas and dust are most likely to be found; (2) the increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost, which in many mines has resulted in neglect of even rudimentary precautionary measures; (3) multiple-shift operation without provision of time for adequate maintenance of equipment, effective rock dusting, and testing for gas; (4) decrease in supervision owing to demands on supervisors for maximum tonnage and loss of competent supervisors to other employment; (5) lack of effective supervision, owing to numerous new conditions, some of them war-connected; (6) inability to obtain adequate equipment repair and replacement parts; (7) shortage of labor and inadequate training of coal-mine workers; and (8) failure of both miners and mining officials to show regard for safety in changing from hand-loading to mechanized methods". Most of the eight factors listed by Mr. Humphrey continue to affect our work lives as mining engineers. The increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost has never changed. The local and regionalized coal industry of the 40's is today competing against the world coal market. Our mines work or shut down based on cost. This has always been the case. During the five year time-frame Mr. Humphrey was documenting, 345 miners were killed in major explosions. A major explosion was one in which five or more miners were killed in a single accident. In addition, 105 more miners were killed in minor explosions for a total of 450. What a wanton waste of life. What fears, anxieties, miseries, and sufferings were created by these accidents. However, we must remember and keep in mind that the coal mining company officials, engineers, and foremen, the governmental agencies- federal, state, and local - were using the technical tools and knowledge available to operate the mines as safely as they could. Obviously mine ventilation engineering technology was woefully inadequate.

"This paper aims to remind researchers, designers, operators, and managers about the benefits of seeding in the design of precipitation stages in their flowsheet. Including a high density solids (HDS™) process encourages the precipitating solids to form on the surface of existing precipitated particles. This paper discusses the application of the HDS technology at Kennecott Smelter, where the authors have witnessed significant improvements in settling and filtration rates. The authors have also applied this technology at various smelter bleed treatment plants worldwide with similar improvements in precipitation and filtration rates. HDS is a registered trademark of De Nora Water Technologies. RÉSUMÉ Cet article a pour objectif de rappeler aux chercheurs, aux concepteurs, aux exploitants et aux administrateurs les avantages de l’ensemencement dans la conception des étapes de précipitation de leur schéma de traitement. L’introduction d’un procédé des boues haute densité (procédé HDS™, de l’anglais high density sludge) encourage la formation de substances solides précipitantes à la surface des particules précipitées existantes. The baghouse dust was leached with dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in a batch process. The iron and arsenic in the solution were oxidized with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and basic ferric arsenate (BFAS; Fe(AsO4)x(SO4)y(OH)z·wH2O) was precipitated using milk of lime. The cadmium was cemented from the purified solution using zinc dust."

HOW have recent events affected the general trend in world mineral production? What effect has the World War, with its resultant boom and depression, had on the long-term trend of output? Have all of the principal metals and fuels been similarly affected, or have some boomed or slumped much more than others? The trend of world production of coal, iron, the principal nonferrous metals, and petroleum is shown in the accompanying chart, covering the period from 1882 to 1931 inclusive-the last fifty years. The curves are plotted logarithmically to show the comparative trends. In the lower left-hand corner of the chart is a slope diagram to aid in visually evaluating. the average yearly rate of increase in production; from this one can easily see, for example, that the petroleum production curve indicates an average annual increase of around 8 per cent, and that up to the period of the World War the average annual increase in copper production was about 6 per cent.

THE Dust Symposium was attended by approximately 100 persons, nearly all of whom remained from the starting hour (2 p. m.) until the use of the auditorium was demanded for another meeting at 5:30 p. in. In calling the meeting to order, D. Harrington made a few remarks as to the importance of the health dust problem in mining as well as in general industry and expressed gratification that the subject is now out in the open and that mining people are desirous of ascertaining the facts. B. F. Tillson acted as chairman of the meeting. The milling executive who desires to know what to do to prevent his workers from being unduly exposed to the dust hazard can get much out of the paper by D. E. Cummings, who has been doing much work in mines trying to keep -the dust in the air within safe limits. His recommendations indicate that the main protection of the worker in mines is by adequate ventilation, supplemented by the extensive use of water in drilling, as well as in water curtaining to condition air both in regard to dust content and to temperatures. Blasting was shown to be one of the chief causes for dust and it was recommended that whenever feasible all blasting should be delayed to the end of the working shift.

The practice of pumping gases which inhibit combustion for purposes of controlling or extinguishing mine fires is now universally accepted. The practice has been used many times in coal mines in India and the experiences are reviewed. The procedures relating to a membrane based nitrogen generator and to a combustion gases generator are described. The physical properties, practical requirements and economic implications of using different gases is briefly reviewed. Some aspects of the practice as related to mine fires in certain collieries in other countries are dealt with.

"The profile of the respondents was that of a professional responsible for communications, community relations or corporate social responsibility programs. By targeting a consistent professional profile it was possible to ensure that most respondents had a similar degree of responsibility and/or decision-making ability related to the application of communication technologies. The research attempted to be inclusive and attention was paid to interview respondents from both genders and from indigenous groups.4, 5 A codebook of 80 themes was developed that highlighted recurring topics; for example, codes were created to identify risks, benefits, policies and learning process of using social media and included topics that were repeatedly emphasized by respondents (i.e. age, efficiency and language). Both manifest coding (i.e. coding of the visible content, such as specific words) and latent coding (i.e. coding of underlying meanings) was undertaken (Creswell [13]). The codes were used in the qualitative analysis using ATLAS.ti software and network views were created to illustrate the relationship between major themes of this research. There are limitations to this research, largely related to the changing nature of the Internet and communication technologies. There is also a geographic limitation to the application of this research because most of the data was gathered primarily from Canadian sources.6 Different levels of Internet penetration, or limited access to computers or mobile devices, and low literacy rates may reduce the applicability of the research in countries with low Internet penetration. A more systematic process to selecting candidates may have helped bring balance to the final list of interview respondents. For example, most of the corporate respondents were from medium and large companies and there was not adequate representation of small mineral exploration companies. The research did not probe into social media applications by different business groups within the mining sector, such as smelting and processing."

The Globe Mining District is in the southeast central part of Arizona, in Gila County. Globe, with a population of about 7000, is the terminus of the Arizona Eastern R.R., a branch line 130 miles long that connects with the Southern Pacific R.R. at Bowie. In 1874, prospectors crossing the Pinal Mountains from the west located what is generally known as the Old Dominion mine. For several years, it attracted little attention, because of the greater interest aroused by the discovery of high-grade silver ores in some of the foothills northeast of Globe. About six years later, the prospector turned his attention to the abundant copper ore revealed by surface workings along the Old Dominion vein, and, in 1884, the Old Dominion company erected two 30-ton furnaces. From 1888 to 1893, the Old Dominion company is said to have maintained an average annual production of about 8,000,000 Ib. of copper. Until Dec. 1, 1898, all supplies had to be freighted into Globe by wagons and the mines of the district operated intermittently because of high expenses, but with the advent of the railroad the Old Dominion company continued to be a large and steady producer. In the Globe district, the production of copper far exceeds in importance that of any other metal. There are four operating companies along the Old Dominion vein and the total annual product of these properties for 1923 was about 45,000,000 lb. of copper. The unit size of the mineral tracts in the district is the regulation mining claim, 600 ft. wide by 1500 ft. long, and all ownerships are held in fee. Globe is 3600 ft. above sea level, and lies between the Apache MOUntains to the east and the Pinal Mountains to the west. The principal drainage of the district is northward through Pinal creek into the Salt River. The general slope from the high point along the vein, where the Superior & Boston mine is, to Pinal creek, where the Old Dominion mines are, is about 250 ft. to the mile. Geology The oldest rocks in the district are pre-Cambrian crystalline schists known as the Pinal schist, which are the basement upon which all the later rocks were deposited. The Homestake mine is situated in Whitewood mining district, in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, in the city of Lead, Lawrence County. The entire property, comprising 557 lode claims with a total area of 3343 acres, is held under United States Patent. The older claims were 300 by 1500 ft. under local regulations, the newer ones 600 by 1500 ft. The Homestake was discovered April 9, 1876, by Moses and Fred Manuel, and Jake Harney, who were drawn into the northern hills, from the Custer placer district, by news of the discovery of rich placer deposits in Deadwood Gulch. They located a number of additional lode claims and, in a short time, the whole country was covered with locations. The Manuel brothers built an arrastre the following winter and took out $5000. The next year the Homestake lode was sold to Senator George Hearst and associates, who organized the Homestake Mining Co. Other companies were formed to exploit other groups of claims and at one time fivc companies were operating on this deposit, the Father DeSmet, the Dead-wood-Terra, the Caledonia, the Highland, and the Homestake Mining Co. These companies, however, have been merged into the Homestake Mining Company. The first stamp mill, known as the "Eighty Mill," commenced operation on July 12, 1878, and production has been nearly continuous since that time. Geology The orebodies of the Homestake are found in an intensely folded and altered bed of dolomitic limestone occurring in a series of ancient rocks believed to be of Archean age, belonging to the Keewatin series. The Keewatin series is estimated to be 20,000 ft. thick and is made up essentially of quartz mica schists, garnet schists, quartzites, slates, and some green schists, probably derived from basic igneous rocks. The dolomitic limestone bed has a thickness of 40 to 60 ft. The great width of ore, as much as 400 ft. in some of the stopes, is due to the folding, wherein the bed is repeated. The mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. 'Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.—a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included. HiSTOry The Zaruma mine has been worked by white men since 1549, probably before that it was worked by Indians. The followers of Pizarro, led by traces of gold in the sands of the Tumbes River, followed that stream to its source, worked the gold veins that they found and established the city of Zaruma. The Verde mining district is in Yavapai County, in north-central Arizona. Jerome, the principal town, has a population of 6000 and the two important mines of the district—the United Verde and the United Verde Extension—lie almost within its limits. Perched high on the southwest side of the Verde valley, at elevations of 4800 and 5500 ft. (1463 and 1676 m.) respectively, both mines have long tunnels from their lower levels through which the ore is hauled to the smelters. Clarkdale, the smelter town for the United Verde mines, lies in the Verde valley 4.1 miles (6.5 km.) distant in an air line from Jerome and at an elevation of 3560 ft. The two towns are connected by the standard-gage railroad of the Verde Tunnel and Smelter R. R., a subsidiary of the United Verde Copper Co. This road is 11 miles long and has a compensated grade of 4 per cent. At Clarkdale it connects with the Verde valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad. Clemenceau, the smelter town for the United Verde Extension mine, lies 3.5 miles (5.8 km.) in a southeasterly direction from Clarkdale, at an elevation of 3420 ft. It is connected to the Verde Valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad at Clarkdale by the Arizona Extension R. R., a subsidiary of the United Verde Extension Mining Co. The portal of the haulage tunnel, at an elevation of 3757.5 ft., is also connected with the smelter town by 4 miles of standard-gage track belonging to the same company. In the vicinity of Jerome, the great southern escarpment of the Arizona plateau forms the northeast side of the Verde valley. The general level of this escarpment, or "rim" as it is called, is about 4000 ft. above the Verde River. A corresponding elevation is reached only by the highest peaks of the Black Hills, which bound the valley to the southwest. Two lava-capped mesas, known as "Mingus" and "Woodchute mountains," form the culmination of the Black Hills. That part of the Old Black Hills mining district which lies between their crests and the Verde River is now known as the Jerome, or Verde, mining district. If the smelter towns are not included, a strip about 7 miles long by 3 miles (11 by 5 km.) wide, embraces practically all of the properties belonging to the Jerome district. Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific- indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1971 at 5 million tons valued at $200 million, averaging $40.00 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, calcium carbonate, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface smoothness, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses. Use of Mineral Fillers Archaeologists have found that more than 5000 years ago, bitumen used for mortar and waterproofing contained mineral contaminants that acted as fillers. Since that time man has added mineral products to compounds to improve certain characteristics. Perhaps the most common objective of filler usage is reduction of cost of the end product. Certainly the inclusion of a filler that costs 2¢ per 0.45 kg (lb) will reduce the cost of a plastic product whose resin costs 50¢ per 0.45 kg (lb). But the decision to use a specific filler is not that simple. It may "soak up" binder, making a compound more viscous and perhaps preventing its flow into a mold as an injection molding compound, but similarly will give good anti-sag characteristics to putty, caulking compound, or undercoating. "In this article, we describe a combined experimental and computational program to study the filling of automotive wheels during low pressure die casting. Experiments are performed by placing thermocouples into the mold walls of a production caster for the Ford F 113 wheel to measure the temperature profiles in the die during processing, and to infer the filling pattern. Computational models are also developed using a 36° section of the wheel pattern, taken directly from CAD data files. We use these models to simulate the filling and heat transfer processes. Comparison between experimental and computational results are presented, demonstrating the viability of this procedure.IntroductionAutomotive companies are using increasing amounts of aluminum in production vehicles: While the main driving force is improved fuel economy through weight reduction, replacing steel wheels by aluminum also offers the potential for improved vehicle performance by reducing unsprung mass. For these reasons, many new vehicles are now supplied with cast aluminum alloy wheels, and the aftermarket for these wheels continues to grow.The most common production process for these wheels is low pressure die casting. The process is subject to numerous defects, including microporosity, cold shuts, cold folds, misruns and inclusions. Scrap rates at the caster of the order of 10% are not uncommon. Many wheels also have large production runs, into the hundreds of thousands of wheels per year. Thus, the cost savings from even small reductions in scrap rate have the potential to be quite significant.Most of the defects are associated with the filling and solidification processes in the mold. The molds are air cooled, and the placement and sizing of cooling passages is currently as much art as science. The ultimate goal of this project is to improve that situation, by implementing simulation procedures that enable engineering design methods to be used in die and process specification."

The disposal of residual material from processing and combustion of coal, from incineration of domestic refuse and sewage sludges kind to the environment is a prior task for the future. Deutsche Montan Technologie (DMT) has developed a new technique which makes possible to fill-up goaf cavities behind running caving systems in coalmining. In a mixing and pumping station on the surface high concentrated suspensions are produced from the above mentioned materials. The paste is pumped through pipes to the coalfaces and via trailing discharge pipes stretched to the fracture zone in the caved-in goaf. Since three years a special designed plant is working successfully on a coal mine of Ruhrkohie AG.
