Buildings with large height-to-width ratios require foundations with significant uplift resistance. This paper presents a case study of the permanent rock tiedowns installed for One Manhattan West, a sixty-seven-story office building in midtown Manhattan. Site access and schedule dictated the size of the equipment for installing the tiedowns would be limited to drilling a 16 inch (406 mm) diameter hole. A three bar configuration of 3 inch (76 mm) diameter high strength threaded bars was chosen to develop an allowable capacity of 923 tons (4060 kN) per tiedown. Although the quality of the rock at the site was generally high, a challenging geologic condition emerged during the installation of one of the tiedowns requiring a creative installation procedure. Although the three bar configuration performed relatively well there are challenges with loading and testing this bar arrangement. Unlike single bar tiedowns that are typically tested with a high success rate, testing of a multiple bar system can result in some unsatisfactory results. This may be attributed to the installation challenges, difficulty loading each bar uniformly and/or the method of monitoring the test. Understanding the complexities is necessary to improve the testing results and achieve similar reliabilities of single bar systems.

A first-class haulage level railroad was considered of prime importance during planning of San Manuel because successful operation of the mine would hinge heavily on the ability to move large tonnages of ore rapidly, safely and efficiently. These principles, plus certain techniques developed from experience on the 1475 level, are being employed in preparation of the 2075 level. At full production, twelve 23-ton trolley locomotives, each pulling fifteen 12-ton capacity ore cars, and fifteen 8-ton battery locomotives engaged in development, service and supply, will be in operation on the 2075 level 24 hours per day, seven days a week. More than 35,000 tons of ore will be transported every 24 hours. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The rail haulage system is designed to comfort- ably move twelve 180-ton payload trains per hour through the rotary dumps pulled by 23-ton trolley locomotives. The rail system is laid out as a simple double loop with one-way traffic of continuous haul as shown in the above diagram, and is comprised of about 30 miles of track on the 2075 level.

The implementation of effective techniques for meeting the maintenance requirements of the new Utah Copper Division smelter, one of the largest in the Western Hemisphere, is a goal of the smelter management and supervisory personnel. Kennecott's Metal Mining Division Computing Center has been working with smelter personnel to implement a computer program to provide instantaneous access to equipment specifications, maintenance and cost histories, spare parts, preventive maintenance scheddes, etc. for several hundred pieces of equipment. This information will be available to all smelter personnel via visual display terminals. The system will dramatically reduce the time now spent in search of pertinent information required in effectively performing the maintenance functions. It will also be used to analyze practices, detect trends, prepare budgets, and substantially reduce the paper work normally associated with the running of a large and complex maintenance organization.

This material is loaded by large electric shovels and transported by both truck and rail haulage. To meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act of 1970 (as amended), new facilities for the control of smelter emissions were required and are now nearing the final stages of construction. The facility will be capable of treating all the output from the mine, some 2,530 tons (2,789 st) per day of combined concentrate and precipitate. Costing $280 million and necessitating the replacement of reverberatory furnaces with continuous smelting vessels, the plant, with its massive and complex gas handling and acid-making facility, is required to remain on-stream with the minimum of pollution control equipment outages to conform with Federal Regulation 52.2325.

At the, Crescent Valley Mine of the Hanna Coal Company, several 10,000 ton unit trains of 41" x 0 strip coal are loaded per week during the lake season. This is accomplished without the use of any accumulation of prepared coal. A large raw coal pile is built up during the winter months adjacent to two truck dump bins. This is added to whenever trucks are coming in from the pits and trains are not being loaded. During the loading of trains, trucks from several pits dump into the truck hoppers and coal is also dozed in from the pile. At a rate up to 3200 tons per hour this coal is screened, the plus 6" hand picked, the plus 4" crushed, and' all weighed and sampled as it goes directly to railroad cars being handled on two tracks by car retarders. With such an arrangement it is possible to exercise some control over coal quality, if it can be assessed rapidly. For instance, if the moisture rises to a level where it seems probable the BTU per pound will be reduced to the point where the contract calls for penalties, the trucks from, the wettest pit may be stopped, more or less coal may be moved in from the stockpile, or other measures taken to assure that the average BTU of the trainload will be satisfactory.

Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred in Australia in the Sydney Coal Basin since 1895 and in the Bowen Coal Basin since 1954. The largest has been about 500 tonnes of coal and so their magnitude and character have not approached those experienced in some other countries. The occurrence of CO2 with some Australian cases provides some similarity with the worst affected areas in France and Poland.The proneness of seams depends on coal rank and seam gas composition, among other factors. The proneness of places depends on depth, structure, intrusion, tectonism and other factors affecting the geometric, physical and chemical uniformity as well as details of mining. As a phenomenon due to gas and stress, prevention can be achieved by relief of high gas and/or stress condition. Alternatively, controls can be applied to render mining safe for personnel. Unfortunately day-to-day prediction is not widely and reliably achieved to allow selective use of prevention or control. The initial rate of desorption is the most promising day-to-day indicator.Various researches include gas conditions and parameters, stress and failure conditions and parameters, coal variables and geological variables in relation to prediction, prevention and control. Some assistance in research may derive from study of analogous phenomena of instantaneous outbursts of salt and other rocks and gas. It is concluded that in the Sydney and Bowen Basins, any coals with less than 30 per cent Volatile Matter (VM) ash free dry (afd) at depths over 200 m could be prone. Proneness increases with depth, with lower volatile content, with geological disturbance including faulting, intrusion and recent tectonics, with increased CO2 in seam gas, with narrow work and with other factors. Much more research is needed.Unfortunately outbursts are needed too, to provide the research with realistic data. With the problems of mechanism and prediction still being unsolved much research remains to be done. No present aspect of research is satisfactorily resolved.

Suite aux excellents résultats, obtenus avec la technologie des détonateurs électroniques dans des chantiers longs trous de grandes dimensions, nous avons décidé d?étendre cette technologie dans les ouvertures, dans le dynamitage de piliers et dans différents chantiers complexes. Cette technologie nous a permis d?effectuer l?abatage de chantiers avec un très grand nombre de trous sans détériorer le terrain. L?équation est bien simple avec les détonateurs électroniques, plus gros sont les dynamitages moins de fois les épontes se font ébranler, moins de blocs d?effondrement se retrouvent dans les points de soutirages entre les dynamitages et plus la fragmentation est meilleure. La flexibilité d?opération que nous avons obtenu avec les détonateurs électroniques est difficilement quantifiable, mais elle nous a permis de maintenir notre rythme de production mensuelle même avec certains chantiers complexes. Il est bien certain que l?utilisation des détonateurs conventionnels a encore sa place dans une mine conventionnelle comme Beaufor, mais l?utilisation des détonateurs électroniques a aussi sa place dans certaines situations spéciales. Pour terminer, bien que la technologie des détonateurs électroniques soit encore dispendieuse, nous pensons encore l?utiliser pour optimiser certains dynamitages et ainsi maintenir notre flexibilité d?opération.

The Bulletin. The Bulletin of the Institute will be issued hereafter monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates tin? membership, and other items of timely information. The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will lie: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. Lt is probable that a supplementary session of this meeting, will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the farther discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. It is now reasonably certain that the XCVIIth meeting will be held oil the Pacific Coast, including a. visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en. route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. (lore definite information will be announced at the New Haven Meeting, or at the earliest possible date thereafter.

At the Annual Meeting of the Institute, February, 1908, the following amendments to the Constitution were proposed for action at a future business meeting (see Trans., XXXIX, xxvii) To Art. II. After the first sentence of this Article, add the following sentence « These classes may be subdivided by the Council, according to profession, length of membership, nationality, or other conditions not inconsistent with the provisions of this article." To Art. III. In the first line, substitute " fifteen " for "ten " dollars. At the Annual Meeting of February, 1909, action upon these amendments was postponed to the next business meeting (see Bulletin No. 27, March, 1909, p. xiv). Of these two amendments, the first has been withdrawn, as unnecessary-the subdivision thereby authorized being already practicable without such amendment. The second amendment will be acted upon at the next Annual Meeting, February 15, 1910, and the Secretary has been instructed to call the attention of members to the subject in such a way as to secure a general vote upon it. A special circular, now being prepared by the Secretary, will shortly be sent to all members. Year Book of the Institute. The Year Book of the Institute for 1910 is sent to all members and associates with this issue of the Bulletin. Further details of the 97th meeting of the Institute, at Spokane, have been sent to members in the Special Circular of May 8, 1909, and for convenience a summary of the additional information is given later in this announcement. In spite of the present small number who have joined the party, final arrangements have been made to complete the itinerary given in the circular. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the special courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. . For those who cannot take the entire trip, it may be possible to provide special Pullman accommodations after leaving the Yellowstone Park. In order to make the necessary arrangements, however, the names of members and guests contemplating this partial trip should be sent at once to Mr. Theodore Dwight, .39 West 39th St., New York, N. Y. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago September 16. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals (luring the entire trip, except while taking the tour through the Yellowstone Park. The general cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through Yellowstone Park, occupying in all about 30 days. The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME), a non-profit safety and security organization founded in 1913, is known for its industry best practices, Safety Library Publications (SLP), some of which have been incorporated into rules by regulatory agencies. The IME developed the first commercial storage, quantity distance (Q/D) table titled “The American Table of Distances” (ATD). It was developed by IME’s legacy association in 1910 and was originally based on observations of structural damage from 117 accidental explosions involving small to very large amounts of explosives, primarily dynamite and black powder. In 1930, the IME published a book, compiled by Ralph Assheton, called the “History of Explosions on Which the American Table of Distances was Based”. The distance in feet in the ATD were founded on the measurements at which inhabited buildings sustained substantial structural damage from the accidental detonation of explosives. For example, minor damage such as window glass breakage and the “shaking down” of plaster was not considered substantial structural damage. Other damage to property that was readily repairable was also not considered “substantial.” It was concluded that unless some integral portion of the building was damaged, the occupants would not be subjected to serious risks.

In considering the effects of reducing gases on hot solid copper the following conclusions have been reached. (I) Depth of deoxidation of copper heated in reducing gas is grealer the smaller the amount of cuprous oxide originally present in the copper, the range studied being from 0.015 to 0.136 per cent. oxygen. It is suggested that the reason for this diflerence in depth of deoxidation is thai, when the copper is low in cuprous oxide, the reducing gas is diluted less by the gas that is formed in the reaction than when the copper is high in cuprous oxide; and the greater the concentration of the reducing gas the deeper the deoxidation. (2) The rate of deoxidation is much more rapid at the beginning of exposure than at the end, a condition especially noticeable at temperatures around 900" C.; that is, deoxidaion is retarded as the depth penetrated by the reducing gas increases. (3) Within the accuracy of the experiments arsenic in copper up to 0.5 per cent. has no tendency to increase or decrease the action of a reducing gas on the cuprous oxide presenx in the copper. In 1912 pieces of 0.365-in. hard copper rod 1/2 in. long were heated in a porcelain tube in an electric furnace, while illuminating gas was passed through. An approximate analysis of this gas is: Hydrogen 38 per cent., carbon monoxide 30 per cent., illuminants 13 per cent., methane 10 per cent., ethane 3 per cent., carbon dioxide 3 per cent., nitrogen 2 per cent., oxygen 0.4 per cent. The Al-Cu-Ni-Mg alloy is much benefited by heat treatment and, in such condition, is preferable to the Al-Cu-Fe-Mg alloy either as cast or as heat-treated, when both are reheated to temperatures of from 400" to 600" F. and compared, cold, with respect to strength and to hardness. The main differences between the alloys do not arise until the reheating temperature exceeds 400" F., above which they gradually soften. This softening is characterized metallographically by the appearance of intragranular precipitate. The Al-Cu-Ni-Mg alloy is weakest and least hard after being reheated at 600" F., the Al-Cu-Fe-Mg alloy at about 700" F. The former starts to reharden at 700" F., the latter at 800' F. There is a tendency for both alloys to lose strength and hardness with prolongation of time at the reheating temperatures of 500" and of 700" F. The Al-Cu-Ni-Mg alloy is considerably stronger and harder than the Al-Cu-Fe-Mg alloy when both are heat-treated and reheated for long periods of time at 500" and 700" F. Although the latter can be made harder initially than the Al-Cu-Ni-Mg alloy by suitable quenching and aging, heat treatment, in general, favors the retention of this initial (strength and) hardness after reheating to a much greater degree in the Al-Cu-Ni-Mg alloy. The percentage of elongation of the two materials in any condition is very small. Certain aluminum alloys have been used for pistons and other parts operating at temperatures up to 650" F. because of their lightness, high thermal conductivity and specific heat, fair strength and hardness at elevated temperatures, excellent machineability, and moderate resistance to corrosion. In the piston, the inertia forces and the bearing loading, and with this the vibration, are decreased. The piston head functions at a lower temperature (about 200" F. below one of cast iron), so that, because of the lessened tendency toward carbonization and detonation, higher compression ratios may be used. On the other hand, the aluminum alloys do not have the wearing and bearing qualities of cast iron; also they have a large coefficient of expansion, allowance for which must be made in the design. The range in analyses of aluminum alloys, used for pistons in domestic and in foreign internal-combustion engines is shown in Table 1. Various phases of the embrittlement of solid copper containing oxygen by the action of reducing gases at high temperatures are familiar to readers of metallurgical literature through the work of many experimenters. In 1900, Heynl recorded observations of copper being heated in hydrogen with the development of fine cracks, the result of the formation of steam within the metal through the action of hydrogen on the copper oxide usually found in copper. Archbutt,2 in 1905, published the results of experiments, showing that all oxygen can be removed from copper by heating to redness, for several hours, in hydrogen. Intercrystalline cracks and extreme brittle-ness developed. Archbutt attributed the brittleness to the reduction of oxides present in the copper. Bengough and Hil1,3 in 1910, encountered the now well-known embrittlement at the outset of their investigation and stated in their paper: It soon became evident that the effect of any heat treatment depended largely on the presence or absence of reducing gases in the atmosphere of the furnace, as well as on its temperature. Hence it became necessary to adopt a somewhat elaborate scheme of heat treatment. The authors found embrittlement in separate experiments due to both hydrogen and carbon monoxide and concluded that: "The gases ruin the alloys after being heated to about 650" C. in their presence." Ruder,4 in 1916, reported the results of a series of experiments made by heating commercial and deoxidized copper in hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and steam. In agreement with other writers, he found that copper containing oxygen was made brittle by reducing gases, while the deoxidized metal remained unaffected. In the case of

Of all the alloying elements used in commercial aluminum alloys, copper stands out as by far the most important, and it is perhaps for this reason that the constitution of the aluminum-copper system has received the attention of a number of experimenters covering a period of approximately 20 years. It would be expected that during this time the equilibrium relations would have been thoroughly and exactly worked out. In a general way this is true, but there is a surprising lack of agreement in the details of the high aluminum end of the diagram, particularly in regard to the solid solubility of copper in aluminum, which has been given variously as 2 per cent. to 5 per cent. at the eutectic temperature. The importance of this is much greater than might at first appear to one unfamiliar with modern commercial aluminum alloys. This is true because, with one exception, the susceptibility of the strong alloys to heat treatment depends, in part at least, upon the solid solubility relations of copper in aluminum. In 1919, Merica, Waltenberg, and Freeman1 published the first detailed information on these solubility relations. They found that the solubility of copper decreases with falling temperature from about 4 per cent. at 525" C. to about 1 per cent. at 300" C. and is apparently still diminishing at lower temperatures. In 1921 there was published a brief account of the results obtained in the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, England.2 This laboratory, however, reported that 5 per cent. of copper is soluble in aluminum at 540" C., and that this amount decreases to about 3 per cent. at 20" C. In the same year Ohtani and Hemmi3 reported a solubility of 4.8 per cent. copper at 520" C., 2.6 per cent. at 460" C. and 1.5 per cent. at 420" C.
