A mechanism of scorodite formation at ambient pressure was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Several types of iron arsenate were obtained from Fe/As solutions (Fe/As = 1.0 and 1.5) at pH values of 1.0, 1.25 and 1.5 at 95°C. Amorphous FeAsO4.xH2O was precipitated from solutions having a higher mole ratio of Fe/As at pH l.5, even after 9 hours. A few micron sized particles were observed by SEM, but these proved to be agglomerates of 10-50 nm amorphous FeAsarxH2O particles when observed by TEM. This means that supersaturation of the solution causes the acceleration of nucleation of iron arsenate hydrate. Crystalline scorodite was obtained from a solution in which the Fe/As mole ratio was unity, at pH l.0 and pH 1.5, after 3 hours. Almond-type crystalline scorodite particles were observed by TEM and most of them showed high crystallinity. The addition of scorodite seed material enhanced the crystallization. Amorphous FeAsO4.xH2O, however, was observed at the surface of the seeds during the early stages of precipitation. It is postulated that crystalline scorodite is not directly precipitated even on crystalline scorodite seeds, but requires a certain time to crystallize on the seed material.

"The mechanism of the selective chlorination of nickel and cobalt in reduced limonitic laterite was investigated. Reduced ores were obtained from the reduction roasting of a limonitic nickel laterite. The thermal decomposition of related chlorides and the selective chlorination of the reduced ore were carefully studied using Differential Thermal analysis - Thermogravimetry (DTA-TG), X-Ray Diffraction and chemical leaching methods. In the temperature range of 300 - 500 °C, aluminum chloride hexahydrate was chosen as chloride agent. During the selective chlorination, reduced ore was partly chlorinated by hydrogen chloride generated from the thermal decomposition of chloride agent. Then the oxydrolysis of ferrous chloride re-generated hydrogen chloride was used to further the chlorination. Finally, iron was mostly rejected as hematite, while nickel and cobalt were selectively chlorinated. More than 91 %Ni , 90%Co and about 4%Fe in the chlorinated ore was extracted using a water leaching method.IntroductionLimonitic nickel laterite is an important nickel reserve, which is rich in iron in the form of goethite and has low contents of magnesium, aluminum, silicon, and other elements. Goethite is the main nickel-bearing mineral in the laterite [1]. Nickel is generally present in goethite in three modes: (a) associated with amorphous or poorly crystalline goethite, (b) weakly adsorbed to the crystalline goethite surface, and ( c) as lattice substituents [2]. In addition, cobalt in limonite was found to be associated with a manganese phase rich also in nickel [3]. These results indicate that the extractions of nickel and cobalt are highly dependent upon the degree of the decomposition of the nickel, cobalt-bearing minerals.For the selective extraction of nickel and cobalt from limonitic laterite, the ore is usually processed by hydrometallurgical methods, including high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) [4] or reductive roasting - ammonia leaching (Caron process). However, there are still some disadvantages in these processes, such as the expense of autoclaves and scaling problems in HP AL [ 4, 5], and relatively low overall metal recovery, large energy and reagent requirements for the Caron process."

Samples of the reacting suspension particles were taken from the reaction shaft of a commercial flash furnace at different heights. The processes of matte and slag formation and morphology of the samples in the shaft were observed and analyzed. Variations of matte and slag composition in the shaft were investigated. By analyzing the samples taken from the settler at different locations, settler processes were studied such as slag formation, agglomeration and separation of matte-slag phases, Fe3O4 reduction, copper-in-slag reduction etc. In accordance with the characteristic of matte and slag formation the flash furnace can be divided into 6 functional regions, and a mechanism model called as “Micro bath process” is proposed for matte and slag formation in a commercial flash furnace. INTRODUCTION During flash smelting, concentrate particles scattered in the reaction shaft complete their oxidation reactions in suspension. The droplets produced fall into the settler beneath with a small amount of un-melted solid particles, agglomerate and separate into matte and slag layers which are tapped out from their tap holes separately. With respect to the extent of slagging reaction in the reaction shaft, there isn’t any commonly accepted understanding in literature (Kimura, Ojima, Mori & Ishii, 1986; Kemori & Kondo et al.,1988; Kemori, Denholm & Kurokawa, 1989; Fagerlund &Jalkanen, 2000). Some assume that the slagging reaction in the shaft can be ignored and some propose that all slag is produced in the shaft. With regards to the characteristics of the physical-chemical changes of concentrate particle in the reaction shaft, although there are some research results reported from pilot scale and commercial scale experiments (Kemori, Ojima & Kondo, 1988; Hagni, Vierrether & Sohn, 1988; Jorgensen, Taylor, Dickinson & Stevenson, 1992; Swinbourne, Simak & Yazawa, 2002; Kivinen & Tuominen, 2005), they are generally limited themselves to theoretical analysis and calculations. No studies are published concerned with the processes of matte and slag generation in the shaft, quantitative analysis of the processes, variations of matte and slag composition and morphologies of the melts along the axis of the shaft, etc.

Plant and laboratory test work was performed in order to optimize a copper/zinc flotation separation circuit at Matagami concentrator, Canada. The testing identified a significant difference between the laboratory testing and the plant flotation, particularly for the sphalerite recovery in the rougher copper concentrate. Tests indicate that sphalerite recovery of the flotation concentrate in the laboratory testing was significantly higher than in the plant. The ToF-SIMS surface analysis identifies surface species responsible for the discrepancy in Zn recovery. It shows that sphalerite flotation is in response to the collector attachment and a significant enrichment of Cu on the surface of sphalerite grains. A comparative surface chemical analysis was performed on both sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains from the plant flotation and laboratory testing in order to identify surface species variability between the two testing. Two significant observations were revealed. First, there is considerably more hydrophilic iron oxyhydroxide on sphalerite surface from the plant flotation sample relative to those from the lab testing. The secondary coating likely completely or partially passivates sphalerite surfaces, reducing Cu enrichment and hence sphalerite floatability. Secondly, comparing the surface chemistry on sphalerite and chalcopyrite, the hydrophilic iron oxyhydroxide species have preference for the sphalerite grains relative to chalcopyrite. Despite numerous studies on the effect of galvanic coupling during grinding, there is limited documented evidence on the effect of the milling environment on the flotation and plant operations. This observation suggests that interaction between sulphide minerals and grinding media have a significant influence on subsequent flotation. This paper discusses the results of a detailed surface chemical evaluation of sphalerite grains from both the plant and laboratory testing in the context of grinding environments and pulp chemistry.

An economic drilling programme is one which costs the !east in chemicals, equipment, and time. The basis for such a programme with rotary drilling techniques is a drilling fluid in which bentonites do not swell. This is recognized in the growing trend toward gyp and other inhibited mud systems. Therefore, even though the mechanism of thinner action is a subject of applied colloid ,chemistry, the understanding of this mechanism is of economic importance in controlling the flow properties of inhibited muds. In phosphate, or sodium tannate, conditioned muds that are relative-!y free of contaminating-electrolytes, the thinner, or dispersing agent, is adsor.bed, ?creating an electrical double layer about the clay particles. The mutual repulsion of these charged particles effects colloidal stabilization, or deflocculation of the suspended clays, as discussed by Norton and others. In inhibited muds, however, the electrolyte concentration in the filtrate is sufficient to collapse the double layer and flocculation of the mud solids occurs, as evidenced by increased viscosity and gel values. Chemicals to control the flow properties of inhibited muds, therefore, are vital to the successful use of these systems as it is not always economical to adjust flow properties by watering back. Flocculation of suspended particles, as indicated in the work of Vervey, Overbeek, and others, is due primarily to gravity-like, long-range Van der Waals forces. Prevention of flocculation may, therefore, be secured by the interposition of any barrier between the particles, the thickness of which approximates the extension of the Van der Waals at-traction. Organic polyelectrolytes, such as Kembreak, Rayf!o, and Q-Broxin, may act to increase the double layer charge when used in small amounts in fresh-water muds. More important, however, is the fact that in inhibited muds an increase in concentration of the polyelecholyte permits the formation of a condensed film adsorption layer of the polyelectrolyte about the clay particle. When this occurs, the extremely viscous condensed adsorption layer creates a mechanical. barrier that prevents flocculation of clays, even in the presence of inhibiting concentrations of elecholytes. Rheological evaluation of the degree of deflocculation, or colloidal stability, may be made by utilizing the known effects of particle inter-action and volume concentration on the flow properties of suspensions. Rheological evaluation should be supplemented by direct microscopic or ultra-microscopic observation.

Oxide particles are commonly used as fillers in plastics, paper, rubber etc. (particulate composites). The successful fabrication of such composites is dependent upon the adhesive strength of the filler particles to the matrix. The compatibility of the matrix and the filler particles is generally enhanced by adsorption of surface modifiers such as surfactants and polymers at the particle-matrix interface. In order to develop a scientific basis for selection of appropriate modifiers it is necessary to understand their adsorption mechanism(s). Specifically, adsorption of polymeric additives is attributed to a combination of chemical and electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Hydrogen bonding has been suggested to be the primary adsorption mechanism for non-ionic polymers. However, a literature survey of Poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)-oxide system suggested PEO, a non-ionic polymer, to be substrate specific. A systematic study was undertaken to investigate the adsorption mechanism(s) of a PEO on oxide particles. It was determined that strong Bronsted acid sites on the surface interact with the ether oxygen, a Lewis base, of PEO to induce adsorption. In this work characterization of PEO binding sites on oxides is reported and the mechanism(s) of PEO adsorption discussed.

"Hard chromizing process is a method for developing a surface modified coating providing wear, corrosion resistance and high temperature surface protection. Two carbon steels with 0.45 wt% and 0.95 wt% carbon contents, respectively, were chromized with pack cementation process at 950'C for 4 and 9 hours, respectively. The phase transformation and microstructure phenomena of chromized coating layer and matrix of two steels were studied with X-ray diffractometer and electron probe microanalyzer. (Cr,Fe)23C6 and (Cr,Fe)7C3 carbides and (Cr,Fe)2N1-x nitride phases were observed on the chromized surfaces. The thickness of chromized layers obeyed the parabolic rate law. The mechanism and diffusional kinetics of the chromizing process were proposed. The diffusivity of chromium in the (Cr,Fe)7C3 carbide phase was calculated using the moving boundary method.IntroductionChromizing process is one of the surface treatment technologies that can produce a chromium contained surface layer with sufficient corrosion and wear resistance on the steel matrix [1-7]. The relatively low cost and no ""line-of-sight"" restrictions are main advantages of chromizing. Adequate bonding strength of these coatings to the substrate was reported [7]. Chromizing process can be classified into soft chromizing and hard chromizing [2]. Soft chromizing is applied to steels containing less than 0.1wt% carbon through which chromium will be diffused. High temperature oxidation resistance improvement is the main purpose of soft chromizing process. On the contrary, the hard chromizing can be applied to steel containing more than 0.3wt% carbon, and very hard chromium nitride and carbide layers will be formed on the surface, which are very resistant to wear, corrosion and temperature [5-7]. Increasing public concern over the welfare of the environment has placed demands on the mining industry to evaluate the environmental impact of mining development. This is a difficult task and involves considering the influence of a multitude of variables on complex processes over a long time period. Few studies which focus on the evaluation of the environmental impact of mining have been conducted and, therefore, there is little past experience to rely upon. This article describes some of the work done to evaluate the potential environmental impact of mining development in Minnesota. Interest in developing the major copper and nickel sulfide deposits near the wilderness areas of northeastern Minnesota aroused concern regarding the environmental impact of mining development in the region. As a result laboratory and field studies were initiated to investigate the potential for trace metal leaching and acid generation due to dissolution of Duluth gabbro. Chemical equilibrium computer modeling was conducted to aid in data interpretation. The goals of the study included the investigation of leaching mechanisms and rates of release (1, 2).

Oxidation potentials have been measured in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferrocyanide, and ferricyanide and ethyl xanthate at various values of pH and related to flotation response. Eh-pH diagrams are constructed and show that the formation of surface ferric ferrocyanide is probably responsible for depression when cyanide is added. The influence of cyanide in the depression of pyrite with xanthates as collector has been the subject of many investigations (1,2,3,4,5,6), and from these studies several theories on the mechanism of depression have evolved. Wark and Cox (7) and Gaudin(8) have suggested that the depressing effect is due to a competition of cyanide ion with xanthate ion for the surface. Cook and his colleagues (9,10,11) have explained this phenomenon in terms of competition between hydrocyanic acid and xanthic acid. Sutherland (12) has shown that both of these theories describe accurately the relation between pH value and cyanide addition at constant collector addition but fail to describe the relationship, between pH value and the amount of collector required to cause flotation. Taggart(12) suggested that depression in these systems is due to the formation of a reaction product between ferric ion at the pyrite surface and ferrocyanide ion derived from solution. Majumdar(4,6) has attempted to prove this hypothesis by measuring the contact angles of pyrite in the presence of 25 mg/liter ethyl xanthate and different concentrations of potassium ferrocyanide and ferricyanide. In all cases the contact angles were quite high up to pH 10; these results indicate that pyrite should not be depressed by either potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide. In view of these facts, Majumdar has assumed that the compound Fe(CN)2 forms at the surface.

Dolomite impurities are increasing in the currently mined phosphate deposits in Florida. Several research efforts have been conducted in various laboratories around the globe to find methods to economically removing the dolomite. However, a universal and cost-effective process is not now in commercial use. In this paper, a new process for dolomite/apatite separation is presented. The differential solubility of dolomite in slightly acidic solution is utilized to generate micro CO2 bubbles at the dolomite/water interface. Particle (dolomite)/bubble aggregates float to the surface leaving phosphate concentrate with low MgO content. Interestingly, up to 6.0 mm particles can be floated by such micro-bubble/particle aggregates. Different surface-active agents were tested to stabilize the bubbles. Results of these tests are presented, and the mechanisms involved are discussed.

Thermal comminution is an industrial process specially suited to very abrasive material, when contamination with Fe from wearing parts of conventional crushing and grinding equipment must be avoided. It involves an initial step of heating the material to be comminuted, followed by sudden cooling (quenching) and finally by a conventional mechanical process to disassemble the particle aggregates. The thermal step is, in fact, a pre-fracturing process. The heating operation causes changes in phase of the minerals and changes in volume of these minerals and other substances included in pores and cracks. The cooling operation causes thermal shock reversions or the phase transformation and consequent generation of internal stresses, high enough to fracture the solid.

"An analysis of coal fragmentation due to the action of a continuous miner is presented. Underground coal cutting by a drum-type continuous miner was simulated in the laboratory using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). The rotary coal cutter provided the versatility of varying the operating and in-situ parameters to provide information on the effects of generating 37 pm (0.0015 in) particles. In these tests, coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 50.8 x 35.6x 20.32 cm (20x 15x 8 in) were first subjected to confining pressures equivalent to in-situ conditions. The blocks were then cut by the rotary cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as (1) penetration of bit into coal, (2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), (3) rotating velocity of' cutting head, and (4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. During the test, all the cut products were collected for size distribution analysis. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photographed and a velocity survey was conducted using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using a camera attached to an optical microscope.The results led to a better understanding of the mechanisms of the fragmentation process during coal cutting and the effect of operating parameters, in-situ conditions and coal type on the size distribution of the cut product:"

Selective flotation in nonmetallic systems is often complicated by the presence of iron-bearing silicates occurring as gangue. Minerals such as augite, diopside, hornblende, and tourmaline respond readily to flotation under the same conditions as ore minerals. Mechanisms by which these minerals respond to flotation with anionic collectors must be established if selective separations are to be made in these systems. It was the objective of this investigation to determine the mechanisms involved in the flotation of two pyroxenes, augite and diopside, with potassium oleate. Experimental Materials and Methods Pure potassium oleate, prepared by neutralization of oleic acid with KOH, was used as collector, while reagent-grade HC1 or KOH were used for pH adjustment. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through a mixed-bed ion exchange column, was used in this investigation. Two pyroxenes, [ ], were involved in this work. One member of this class of minerals was augite and was found to contain 3.3% calcium, 4.6% iron, and 9.6% magnesium. The source of this mineral was Tillamook County, Ore. The other pyroxene involved was diopside which contained 8.3% calcium, 2.7% iron, and 7.6% magnesium. The source of this sample was Bancroft, Ont. Microflotation experiments were conducted with a Hallimond cell. Mineral samples were ground dry and sized to 100 x 200 mesh. One-gram charges were conditioned for 3 min in the presence of various additions of potassium oleate. Flotation was conducted for 1 min with a nitrogen flow rate of 50 cm3/min. An investigation of the mechanisms of formation of two types of porosity-primary and secondary-their characterization, evolution during processing, and effects on the mechanical behavior (fracture, fatigue, and failure) of 7X50 and 2X24 alloys has been conducted. The mechanisms of formation of three forms of primary or cast porosity were investigated, and each form was characterized: (a) macroscopic shrinkage porosity-MSP); (b) microscopic interdendritic porosity (MIP); and (c) hydrogen gas porosity (HGP) or primary hydrogen porosity (PHP). The mechanisms of formation of four forms of secondary or thermal/thermomechanical porosity were investigated, and each form of porosity was characterized: (a) high temperature oxidation (HTO). internal hydrogen precipitation (IHP), or secondary hydrogen precipitation (SHP); (b) preheating blistering porosity (PBP); (c) eutectic melting porosity (EMP);and, (d) dissolution micro void formation (DMF). The evolution and interactions of the primary and secondary types of porosity (w.ith special emphasis on PHP and SHP) during industrial and laboratory processing and their effects on the fracture and failure behavior of both types of alloys (with special focus on fatigue crack initiation and propagation) were investigated.

The effect of addition of a flotation collector (dodecylammonium chloride) on grinding of quartz has been studied. The data obtained are correlated with the results of tests conducted under similar chemical conditions to study influence of these additives on relevant basic sub-processes (primary breakage, pulp fluidity, and dispersion and flocculation of ground products). Such correlations suggest that the role of chemical additives in grinding is determined by their cumulative influence on the above mentioned basic properties of the system.

Excessive production of reactive oxygen radicals by alveolar macrophages is proposed to play an important role in oxidative lung injury. A major product of oxygen radical formation is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (•OH) generated via a biologic Fenton reaction. In addition to its known ability to induce lipid peroxidation, recent studies have suggested that the •OH may exert its cytotoxic effect through the alteration of [Ca2+], homeostasis. To test this potential mechanism as well as to investigate the relationship between •OH and Ca" overloading in cytotoxic injury, isolated rat alveolar macrophages were exposed to externally generated radical system, H2O2 (0.01 to 1 mM) and Fe (1 mM) and their [Ca2+] levels and cell injury were monitored using quantitative fluorescence microscopy with the aid of the specific Ca" indicator, Fura-2, and membrane integrity indicator, propidium iodide. Electron spin resonance measurements using the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) confirmed the production of the .OH radical by this system. Upon the addition of the radicals, the macrophages displayed a rapid initial rise in [Ca2+] which was followed by a slower but more pronounced [Ca2+], elevation that reached a level 3 to 5 times higher than the basal level. This process preceded cell death as evident by nuclear propidium iodide fluorescence. Depletion of extracellular Ca" inhibited both the [Ca2+], response and cell injury. Preincubation of the cells with the Ca" channel blocker verapamil or .0H radical scavenger mannitol similarly inhibited the [Ca2+], rise and loss of viability. Firefly luciferase assay of cellular ATP content demonstrated that the alterations in [Ca2+], following .0H treatment preceded the depletion of ATP. Changes in membrane potential caused by Na* substitution with K* had no significant effect on either the unstimulated or stimulated [Ca"], levels. Taken together, these measurements indicate that .OH-induced injury in alveolar macrophages is associated with the alteration in [Ca2+], homeostasis. The mechanism of •OH-induced [Ca2+] loading is not due to nonspecific membrane damage or energy depletion, but mainly due to an increase in Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ selective channels. This Ca2+ over-load state as well as energy depletion caused by the oxidant may activate certain cellular degradative processes leading to cell injury and death.

Seismic events and pillar failures observed in two platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, South Africa, were investigated. We studied the sources of approximately 300 largest seismic events recorded in 2009. Moment tensors of these events were estimated from amplitudes and polarities of P- and S-waves. The inverted mechanisms contain isotropic implosive components in many instances. Analyses of uncertainty of the moment tensor solutions confirmed the significance of the implosive component in general. Several documented cases of pillar failure were considered in detail. For each of these a seismic moment tensor was calculated from an elastic stress model assuming an instant removal of a failed pillar. The geometries and magnitudes of the theoretical seismic moment tensors are in agreement with the observed (i.e. inverted from seismic data). The results indicate that either pillar failure or fracturing in the proximity of the reef (within a fraction of the dominant wavelength of seismic waves) are responsible for a significant portion of the large events recorded in these mines.

The use of water covers is a globally-applied method for minimising acid rock drainage (ARD) and metal leaching. Although the subaqueous disposal of potentially acid-generating materials has been shown to effectively limit ARD, under certain scenarios, metal remobilisation can occur at circum-neutral pH. The following paper presents data from four case studies in which metal mobility from submerged mine waste resulted in degradation to water quality in the overlying water cover. Subcentimetre resolution profiling of dissolved constituents across the tailings-water interface (dialysis arrays), in conjunction with mineralogical information, were used to elucidate the controls governing metal mobility. The data illustrate four pathways of metal remobilisation, including: the release of zinc via the oxidative remineralisation of metal-rich organics at the tailings-water interface; enhanced remobilisation of arsenic as a result of anthropogenic eutrophication; the release of copper resulting from the pH-driven dissolution of treatment sludges; and the release of radium from uranium mill tailings due to the dissolution of radiobarite [(Ra,Ba)SO4] by sulfate-reducing bacteria. The results highlight the conclusion that the chemical stability of submerged tailings reflects both: the solid-phase characteristics of the tailings material; and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the depositional environment. In particular, the data illustrate that rigorous characterisation of both the waste solids and receiving environment must be performed in order to assess their compatibility. The results have relevance to the management of tailings repositories including constructed impoundments, pit lakes and natural lakes.
